00:00It goes to a run-off election in October between right-wing candidates Rodrigo Paz Pereira and Jorge Tuto Quiroga following Sunday's election day.
00:21Venezuelan Attorney General Tadek William Saab expressed a Republican moral counsel's unequivocal and clear rejection of the U.S. government's criminal campaign against the integrity of the constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro-Moros.
00:42And U.S. President Donald Trump urged Ukraine to abandon hopes of recovering Crimea.
00:57Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:02We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:12We begin with Bolivia, where the disastrous division of the left opened the way for right-wing candidates to participate in October 19 presidential run-off election.
01:27In Sunday's election day, candidate Rodrigo Paz came in first with over 32% of the votes, who will contest the run-off with second place Jorge Quiroga, who obtained over 26% of the votes.
01:41Electoral authorities reported no major incidents during the day.
01:45The elections took place amid a complex political, economic and social context.
01:49This internal division led to the movement towards socialism and the left being fragmented.
01:55Moreover, the sector represented by Evo Morales supporters campaigned for new votes.
02:00As a result, neoliberalism is set to return to power and undone the achievements made so far by the social and political movements
02:09that founded the plurinational state.
02:20And in Venezuela, Attorney General Tarek William Saab expressed Monday the unequivocal and clear rejection by the nation's Republic and Moral Council of the U.S. Government's criminal campaign against the integrity of constitutional president N'Golas Maduro.
02:34William Saab stated that imperialism has attempted to use the farce and the fight against drug trafficking as a tool to criminalize Venezuela and justify unilateral coercive measures which have been discredited and have not prospered.
02:50Saab also pointed out that this attack on the Venezuelan president is unprecedented in the western hemisphere.
02:57And in this regard, he described the actions of the United States as unprecedented in the 21st century, denouncing the attempt to legitimize political aggression through discredited narratives.
03:08We say in Venezuela on Sunday, the president of the country, Nicolás Maduro, referred again to the boosting national tourism and described the sector as the secret weapon of the national economy.
03:26National and international indicators show impressive economic growth in the Bolivarian nation, which is subject to more than 600 illegal sanctions imposed by the United States and several of its western partners.
03:41However, non-oil sectors have grown significantly. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean said Venezuela's gross domestic product increased by 6.2%. The tourism sector alone grew by 72%, boosted recently by the conclusion of an international fair.
04:01In Honduras, the first hearing of the trial of the assassination attempt against former Honduran president Manuel Zelaya Rosales began Monday in the capital city of Tegucigalpa.
04:19According to the nation's public ministry, the three individuals involved in the case have also been accused of conspiring to overthrow current president Xiomara Castro.
04:29It also informed that the individuals face charges of assassination, terrorism, alteration of the constitutional order of the country and that due to political and social importance of the case, the hearing will be held under heavy security measures.
04:44The ministry informed that it had sufficient documentary evidence, testimonies and reports from judicial experts to back up its accusations.
04:54The Colombian government called for a halt to mercenarism in the country after Sudan denounced South American nationals are fighting alongside the paramilitary rapid support forces in the war in Darfur.
05:13Precisely, Colombian head of state Gustavo Petro reiterated that ex-combatants should not be held prisoners in conflict that do not concern them, urging them to fight for the homeland, not to die in other people's wars.
05:28The report has indicated that Colombian mercenaries recruited by armed criminal groups, financed by foreign countries, are participating in the growing conflict in Sudan, a participation for which Bota had formally apologized to Khartoum in December 2024.
05:47Precisely, Sudan's Prime Minister Kamil Idris made a direct appeal in Spanish to the people of Colombia, urging them to stop the recruitment of mercenaries to fight alongside paramilitary forces in the country's war in Darfur region.
06:06Sudan's government accuses the United Arab Emirates of arming the rapid support forces and financing the recruitment of mercenaries.
06:18Compromiso con la paz.
06:20Comitment to peace.
06:21I urge the Colombian people and all Spanish-speaking communities to stand with us in ending the siege and stopping the recruitment and deployment of mercenaries to our land.
06:30And now we have a short break coming up.
06:34But first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
06:40We'll be right back. Stay with us.
06:48Welcome to From the South.
07:05U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin is willing to end the Ukrainian crisis.
07:12The statement was made after Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Monday, where he affirmed that the Russian leader Vladimir Putin really wants to end the conflict as soon as possible.
07:24The U.S. President described as wonderful the fact that the Russian head of state had come to the United States to meet with him and so asserted that he will discuss proposals to resolve the Ukrainian conflict with his European allies and that they must be sustainable.
07:40Thank you very much for being here.
07:41Thank you so much, Mr. Brennan.
07:44If I can, first of all, thank you for your invitation and thank you very much for your efforts.
07:49In Hungary, Foreign Minister Peter Szygarto denounced that Ukraine attacked the oil pipeline to his country, which led to the interruption of fuel supplies.
07:59The Hungarian official described the attack as outrageous and unacceptable.
08:04And Szygarto said also that Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin informed him that experts are already working to repair a power substation essential for the pipelines' operation.
08:16However, no estimated date has been given for supplies to resume.
08:20In a post on his ex-account, Foreign Minister Szygarto accused Brussels and Caif of trying to drag Hungary into war, stating that it is not their war and that Hungary will remain on the sidelines of the conflict.
08:34And we go now to Peru, where indigenous communities in the northern part of the country continue in an indefinite strike against silicon mining.
08:51The community blocked access to the lower basin of the Tigre River, bowing to keep it blocked until the Baluarte government removes the mining dangerous and eliminates water pollution.
09:04The protesters rejected the government's inaction in this context, reiterating that defending life and health is non-negotiable for them and that they will not back down as long as illegal mining continues to destroy the territory.
09:17Indigenous peoples in the region reported that illegal miners use mercury to process the gold they extract from the Amazon, and when this mercury is dumped into rivers, it poisons animals and ultimately damages human health.
09:31In Haiti, former transitional president Fritz-Alphonse Jean denies any relation with Eric Prince's mercenary company amid growing suspicions surrounding an alleged contract.
09:50Fritz, who headed the Transition Council until July, asserted that he was unaware of anything related to the hiring of the mercenary company,
09:59and the situation has been further complicated by Prince's assertion that he had been working with the government since March,
10:06despite Prince's being under investigation for massacres and armed trafficking.
10:11The former transitional president called for an investigation, particularly given that the mercenary company intends to implement a system whereby goods entering from the Dominican Republic would be taxed and persist,
10:24would go to Prince's accounts and not to the country.
10:29On Sunday, the government of Barbados outlined upcoming changes to the country's legislation,
10:41including the amendment of a clause in the interception of communications bill,
10:45which had been poorly received by the population.
10:48In a speech to the nation, Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Motley addressed the clause which would have allowed certain communications to be intercepted without a judge's warrant,
11:00assuring it will be removed when the bill goes to the Senate.
11:03The law is part of a broader package of crime-fighting legislation currently before Parliament,
11:09including measures for criminal proceedings, juries and police and firearms amendments.
11:14In this context, Motley underscored the government's commitment to balancing citizen protection with respect for democratic oversight.
11:22The bill which was passed in the House of Assembly last week carried an exception clause,
11:32a route by which an interception could be treated as lawful without a judge's warrant in specified circumstances.
11:38But after a thorough weekend review and after advice from the Attorney General with input from the relevant authorities and stakeholders and being mindful of public concern,
11:49we are satisfied that this exception ought not to be proclaimed and in fact should be repealed.
11:56We will therefore act accordingly by removing this clause in the Senate and sending the same back to the House of Assembly for concurrence.
12:03Yes. My friends, this government has the humility to listen and always the courage to correct.

12:33Welcome back to From the South.
12:55Israeli occupation forces said they will step up their military operations in Gaza City after approving the plan for the new phase of their expansionist agenda.
13:05In a statement, the Israeli military high command emphasized that it will maintain its deployment throughout the Palestinian territory
13:12as part of its strategy to take full control but will focus on the enclaves' capital.
13:18The action comes amid an ever-growing humanitarian catastrophe triggered by Israel's blockade of humanitarian aid
13:26and constant attacks on civilian infrastructure.
13:29Numerous countries and international humanitarian organizations have rejected the latest Israeli expansionist plans
13:35calling for an immediate ceasefire and the safe entry of humanitarian assistance.
13:39A Palestinian official confirmed that the Palestinian resistance delegation in Cairo received a new 60-day truce proposal from Israel.
13:57Representatives of the Qatari government are reportedly arriving in the Egyptian capital
14:02to make another attempt to alleviate the inhumane situation in the Palestinian enclave.
14:07Mediators in Cairo have already presented Hamas with a proposal for an agreement
14:13which includes the staged release of Israeli hostages or, if they are found dead, the return of their bodies.
14:20Meanwhile, in the north of the street, Israeli occupation troops continue to besiege thousands of Palestinians.
14:26On Monday, the war of starvation claimed two new victims, a three-year-old boy and a six-month-old baby.
14:37And the Palestinian Prisoners Club condemned the abuse of 48 women in the Israeli Damond prison.
14:48In a statement, the organization confirms that imprisoned Palestinians' women are subjected to ongoing repression
14:55and serious violations of their human rights, including physical and psychological abuse.
15:00The text also reveals that two minors and pregnant women are among those detained in Damond.
15:06The Palestinian Prisoners Club also condemns prison security for using tear gas against detainees,
15:12as well as for causing food shortages and the spread of diseases.
15:17Following the increase in Israel's repressive policies,
15:20Palestinians are urging human rights organizations and international agencies
15:24to intervene to stop the violations and guarantee the protection of Palestinian prisoners.
15:36Israel's state comptroller launches investigations against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
15:42and former army chief over the October 2023 raid on the Gaza Strip.
15:47Local media said the investigation will focus on issues related to mistakes made during Operation Al-Aqsa Flood,
15:54where the Israeli army acknowledged its failure to defend the Sufa kibbutz against the Palestinian resistance Hamas.
16:01A report details that nearly 50 Palestinian fighters infiltrated and attacked the settlement,
16:07where three residents were killed and several homes were damaged.
16:17The Iranian foreign minister addressed the recent protests in Israel stating that they evidenced
16:24the death of the Zionist regime's internal crisis.
16:27Let's listen.
16:30These protests are highly significant.
16:34The Zionist regime is facing serious crises.
16:37The insistence of its leaders on continuing the war and pursuing expansionism
16:47has not only angered and worried the countries of the region,
16:56the entire Islamic world,
17:00and in a way the international community as a whole.
17:05But it seems the patience of the regime's own society is also running out.
17:11I think the widespread protests we witnessed yesterday show the depth of the crises
17:16this regime is grappling with internally.
17:20Moreover, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ismail Bagaye condemned the inaction
17:26of the United Nations Security Council in the face of Israel's genocide in Palestine.
17:30The most important international body responsible in this regard is the United Nations Security Council.
17:42As the body in charge of maintaining international peace and security,
17:48the Security Council should have at least issued a resolution condemning the actions of the Zionist regime
17:55and forcing it to stop the genocide in Gaza.
18:00We know that because of U.S. obstruction and its full-scale support for the Zionist regime,
18:07this has not happened.
18:08But that does not mean we should not use other regional and international institutions to document these crimes,
18:19build consensus,
18:20and mobilize public opinion to put pressure on the Zionist regime and its supporters.
18:26In Pakistan, the death toll from heavy rains in various parts of the country rose to 400.
18:47The provinces in the northwest of the country were the most affected by the downpours,
18:52where 671 people were injured, 2,300 homes were destroyed,
18:58and nearly 4,054 head of livestock were swept away by the floods.
19:03The Pakistan Red Crescent Society deployed ambulances and distributed food and tents to the victims,
19:10as well as establishing medical camps to provide immediate care.
19:13For their part, local authorities extended the forecast for heavy rains until next Thursday.
19:22In Spain, firefighters face over 20 forest fires that are ravaging the western half of the country.
19:31Thousands of firefighters supported by the military, helicopters, and planes
19:35continue their efforts to stop the spread of the fires across the territory.
19:40The emergency agency reported that thousands of people have been evacuated,
19:44while the death toll rose to four in the last few hours.
19:48In addition, our studies warned that the active hot spots have intensified the heat wave affecting the country,
19:55and the regions of Castilla y León, Galicia, and Extremadura are the most affected by the fires.
20:00And in the Caribbean, International Meteorological Institutes reported that Hurricane Erin
20:13strengthened to Category 4 as it moves away from the coast of the Dominican Republic.
20:18Dominican weather authorities warned about dangerous waves heading towards the Atlantic coast
20:23and the southern Caribbean with heavy rainstorms, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
20:29At the same time, they advise of the risk of heavy swells as the storm's eye is expected to pass
20:35near the Turks and Caicos Islands on the east coast of the United States.
20:40Whether authorities say the effects of the storm on the Dominican Republic were minimal,
20:45with no reports of property damage or human losses at this time.
