17 July - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hi there. A return to fairly humid weather is expected over the next few days, with the increased chance of some lively thunderstorms developing.
00:09We have seen some thunderstorms already, mostly offshore to the north of Northern Ireland.
00:14Those heavy showers are moving now into parts of Western Scotland and the rest of Northern Ireland during the rest of Thursday.
00:22A chance of some lightning strikes, especially to the north and west of Northern Ireland,
00:26but of main concern are the heavy downpours with some high rainfall rates.
00:31Of course, always hit and miss in this kind of situation, but north-western parts of Northern Ireland most at risk of these,
00:37but also some heavy showers moving into the west of Scotland.
00:40Extensive cloud cover across southern Scotland, northern and central parts of England, as well as Wales.
00:46And within this zone, again, a chance of some heavy showers, perhaps even the odd rumble of thunder, particularly through the Midlands.
00:53But towards the south, the cloud breaking up at times, a humid feel out there, temperatures reaching the mid or even high 20s in one or two spots.
01:02The north-east of Scotland, meanwhile, staying largely dry and bright, fresher feel here, with temperatures more likely to be in the low 20s or high teens.
01:12Now, we've got this heavy, showery rain moving through Scotland overnight, further downpours for Northern Ireland as well.
01:19And a lot of cloud across the UK, with a muggy night to come, uncomfortable for sleeping in places, mistiness around some southern and western coasts.
01:30And temperatures not dipping much below 17 or 18 Celsius.
01:35There'll be some outbreaks of rain arriving into the west, courtesy of a cold front first thing Friday.
01:39But ahead of that, we've got this humid airflow.
01:41And once the cloud breaks up and the sun comes out, it's going to feel very warm, if not hot, across parts of the Midlands, East Anglia and the south-east.
01:49Showers fairly widely across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
01:52But of greatest concern are these thunderstorms that could pop up into the afternoon across parts of north-east England, particularly the North York Moors.
02:0040 to 60 millimetres rainfall potentially falling in a few hours.
02:04Where we do have the sunshine further south, though, the potential for 30 to 32 Celsius.
02:10So, a hot day to come.
02:12But that heat and the humidity and the nearby low pressure will result in further heavy showers into the Friday evening.
02:20Or even some thunderstorms moving up from northern France to become extensive across eastern parts of the UK, in particular as we head into the early hours of Saturday.
02:30Low pressure then nearby on Saturday, swinging further showers and longer spells of rain in from the south-west later.
02:37So, an unsettled picture this weekend.
02:40High humidity, high instability.
02:42Chance of some high rainfall rates in places.
