Uly "The Monster" Diaz joins the show to talk about heart as a fighter and his return to the ring on Friday August 29 for Dirty Boxing. Tobin and Leroy wonder how Fins toughness will be tested vs the Lions.
Transcript
00:00You know, we should have an expert on about having that dog in you,
00:03and I think that this man right here could teach us a thing or two about that
00:06because he's the monster.
00:08So let's go out to the Toyota of Hollywood guest line.
00:11She have over 2,000 Toyotas on sale at one location.
00:13Toyota of Hollywood on 441 between Hollywood and Sheridan,
00:17ToyotaofHollywood.com.
00:19Yuli the Monster Diaz is going to be fighting Dirty Boxing Championship,
00:23Dirty Boxing 3.
00:24What's going on, Yuli?
00:25How are you?
00:26Brandon, Leroy, how are you guys doing, man?
00:29Thank you again.
00:29Good.
00:29So can I ask you this real quick because we're talking about guys being tough
00:34and guys being physical.
00:36In your sport, we assume that everybody is tough,
00:41but sometimes their fighting style would not indicate they really want to mix it up.
00:47When you go into fights like that, if you were to say to somebody,
00:52like, he doesn't fight a real aggressive style,
00:55would he take that as being he's soft or not tough or
00:59just his style doesn't promote that?
01:03No, I just think maybe his style doesn't promote that.
01:06Not everybody has that aggressive style of fighting.
01:09That is my style.
01:10My style is very aggressive.
01:12I'm in your face.
01:13I call it Mexican style because, you know, it's toe-to-toe.
01:16I try to close the distance as much as possible.
01:20But a lot of people have different fight styles,
01:21so some people's styles might come off as not aggressive.
01:24And, you know, and, like, I would say, like, Gervonta, he's a great boxer,
01:29but, you know, he stays on his toes.
01:30He's kind of what they call on his bicycle, kind of staying away,
01:34looking like he don't want to fight until it's time to.
01:37Will you ever, like, do you ever remember a situation of, like, being in the gym
01:42and, like, you're taking on a guy who's, like, all that, you know, style,
01:46he's got a big reputation, but, like, they want, you know, somebody like you
01:50who obviously you've literally been in every combat sport there is
01:53and you're cut from a different cloth.
01:54Like, do you – can you tell early on in a training session, like,
01:59oh, I know how I can push this person around mentally?
02:03Well, yeah.
02:04So with my style, I've noticed, like, you know, I've noticed throughout the years
02:10when I keep this pressure up, when you start getting to the second, third,
02:15fourth, fifth round, you start kind of wearing people down, and you see,
02:19you know, a lot of times you can see the nerves or the, you know,
02:23or the worry coming into people's faces because, you know, you're constant.
02:27I call it zombie mode, too.
02:29You know, you're a zombie.
02:30You're getting hit.
02:31You might be getting hit, but it gets to the point where they can't throw
02:33as many punches anymore.
02:35They're seeing that their punches ain't really affecting you like they thought
02:37they would, and you're still coming after them and still coming after them
02:40and still, you know, still throwing punches at them.
02:44So you're going to be fighting coming up August 29th, dirty boxing again.
02:48The last time you did, somebody tried to cheat, and you had to deal with that.
02:53Like, what was that experience like?
02:55Because you've done every combat sports there is, and now you go into this new
02:59sport, and, like, you feel like the only thing is, all right,
03:02there's no takedowns, and, like, boom, immediately this guy tries to take you
03:05down, and you have to get right up and knock his ass out.
03:10What was that whole experience like of your first time in dirty boxing,
03:13and then how excited are you for this next one?
03:16Man, dirty boxing is amazing.
03:18You know, you guys, I see you there every time, you know, you're commentating.
03:23The venue's amazing.
03:25The people that have come to the show is amazing.
03:27It's a star-studded show.
03:28It's a great show.
03:29I love the rule set.
03:30It's, you know, a little dirtier, you know, no pun intended, than regular boxing
03:38where you can throw the elbows, you can ground and pound as people are standing up.
03:41But, yeah, my last opponent, he actually said in the walkout, I guess, you know,
03:47they have, like, a video, and they had told me that he said, oh, I'll have a
03:50surprise for everybody.
03:51I guess the surprise was to take me down immediately.
03:54But, you know, I got up, I handled business, and I punished them.
03:58It was crazy.
03:59I was, like, because we were literally talking about it, even with the reps that
04:02first day, Uli, of, like, hey, what are the, like, you know, we're trying to go
04:05over the rules, and, you know, what are they going to call, and what are they not
04:08going to call?
04:08And I remember just thinking to myself, you can do a lot.
04:12You can't do that.
04:13And so I imagine that that has to, like, take you immediately.
04:17Like, do you remember what went through your mind immediately, like, as that was
04:19all going down?
04:21Well, the first thing I went through my mind was, this is a good takedown, because
04:26I was in the air.
04:28This is a good takedown.
04:31It was a weird moment, because we kind of, like, so we started, we kind of, like,
04:36squared up to, like, box, and he kind of, like, just rushed from my legs.
04:39And when we fell, and I got, I scrambled up to try to start, because I thought it
04:43was, like, time to ground and pound.
04:44So, again, it was my first fight.
04:46It was his as well.
04:47I knew that was a little too far off the rules, but I wasn't sure.
04:52So once I hit the ground, I popped up, and I was just ready to attack again.
04:56But, yeah, you know, and it was a great, it was a great takedown.
05:00I look at the video, I see myself in the sky, I'm like, damn, this guy squirted me off
05:04my feet.
05:05It was wild.
05:06Well, do you have to, how much do you have to remind yourself?
05:08I can't hear you guys.
05:10Oh, we've, uh, we lost, uh, lost, oh, did we hear you?
05:12Can you hear me?
05:13Yeah, yeah, we hear you.
05:14We can hear you.
05:15Yeah, you sound good.
05:16I can't hear you.
05:17Oh, man.
05:17Can we, uh, maybe we'll get Yuli to, uh, to come back in.
05:20I don't know what happened there.
05:21That's a wild thing.
05:22It seemed like we were rolling along there, baby.
05:24Yep.
05:25We'll see if we can, uh, if he can give us.
05:28You got us now?
05:30Hello, hello.
05:32Let's get, uh, let's see if we can get, I'll text him.
05:34I'll say if we can get him to go in and go out and, uh, reconnect on that.
05:38Cause that's a little weird.
05:39Yeah.
05:40It was flowing away.
05:41It was flowing pretty good.
05:42Now you can hear us, Yuli.
05:43Everything good.
05:44All right.
05:44He's giving us the thumbs up.
05:45What's up, man?
05:46Yeah.
05:48I'm saying like you, you've fought in so many different, like MMA, bare knuckle, jujitsu,
05:53you know, all of it is, do you ever have to like remind yourself, like going into those
05:58things?
05:58Are you, of, of what you're actually doing because of, of how many different things you've,
06:03you've been a part of.
06:04And no, you know what?
06:05I've never had a problem with that just because whenever I have, uh, whatever combat sport
06:09fight coming up, I train just for that.
06:11And I'm so, you know, in, in, in that mode that I know what I have to do.
06:16I never, you know, I, I would never tackle somebody in a boxing match, but yeah, no, no,
06:23I just, you know, I trained for what I'm fighting for and, and it's, you know, when it comes
06:27to the fight day, I'm, I'm very focused.
06:30You're a, so you're on a card, you're taking on Phil Hawes, which, uh, that's a hell of
06:34a matchup between, uh, you guys.
06:35We talk about, you know, guys with a ton of UFC experience.
06:38What do you, uh, what do you do as far as prepping for him?
06:41I don't do anything different when I prep for anybody, you know, I just train my, train
06:46my ass off and, um, get my cardio up and, you know, shout out to Phil, man.
06:52He's a UFC vet.
06:54He's got a ton of experience with a lot of good people.
06:56Um, and you know, I'm coming to show what I got that night.
07:00I think it's a great opportunity for me and, and I, I know I'm going to come out with my
07:04hand raised.
07:05I think when it comes to the boxing in the hands, I think I got a better skillset than he does.
07:09Is it, do you like opportunities like this?
07:11Cause it's a little bit of like, what's going on in the main event with the wolf.
07:13Like that's kind of been his thing.
07:15He loves taking on the former UFC guys.
07:16You've taken on Tiago Alves before.
07:18Like you've, you've been in experiences like this, but does it, does it feel like a little,
07:24a cool opportunity to take on somebody who's been on a stage like that before?
07:28Absolutely.
07:28It definitely feels like a great opportunity.
07:31Um, you know, it's something great to add to the resume.
07:33And again, once, you know, once, uh, their career's over and you look back, you've fought
07:37some big names, you know, you took the, you took the good fights.
07:40Um, did you like, we talked to you, I feel like a couple, I don't know.
07:45It was a couple of months ago.
07:46It was probably like about a year ago and you were thinking about being done.
07:48Like it was your, your final fight.
07:51Why are you still doing it, man?
07:52Like, I mean, what, what, what keeps you going to want to do it?
07:55I know like, Hey, if it's a Miami fight, it's not a Miami fight without Yuli Diaz.
07:59So I'm sure there's a, there's a big call in there, but do you have it in your mind?
08:02How many more of these you want to do?
08:03I love it.
08:04And I train every day.
08:05Um, when, when it comes to bare knuckle, I, I retired from bare knuckle because now I
08:11work with the company, you know, shout out to BKB.
08:13They gave me a great opportunity with, with the company.
08:15I'm doing commentary.
08:16I'm doing, uh, uh, a podcast for them, uh, doing a bunch of stuff behind the scenes with
08:21them.
08:21So it's a great opportunity to have.
08:23So I retired from bare knuckle, took a job with them, but they allowed me to do anything
08:26outside of, outside of it.
08:27That's not bare knuckle.
08:29Uh, so we did speak back in March because I fought dirty boxing one, which was back in
08:33March.
08:34And, uh, that was another great opportunity.
08:36It was a fight in, in Miami.
08:38Um, and you know, I wanted to be part of a DBX one, be, you know, one of the pioneers that
08:45set this thing off.
08:46So it was again, great opportunity that I had to take and, and I never, I never stopped
08:50training, man.
08:52No, I mean, well, yeah, it looks that way.
08:54It looks like you never stopped training, dude.
08:55Like, is it still a, is it still a rush to, to, to see, have your kids watch you or to
09:00have your, to have your, your people get to see you in a Miami fight for me?
09:05It is, man.
09:06For me, it's a great rush.
09:07You know, if you ask my wife, she, she wants me to stop taking fights, but, uh, no, it's
09:12definitely a fight.
09:13I mean, uh, definitely, uh, uh, amazing to fight here in my backyard, man.
09:18Coconut Grove.
09:18I grew up, you know, all around that area.
09:21Uh, I used to even hang out where the hanger is before the hanger was even built.
09:24So, you know, it's, it's, it's, it's a great thing.
09:27I know all the people are coming out and especially for this fight, you know, I'm fighting another
09:30big name.
09:31They're going to want to see this show and it's going to be explosive, man.
09:35Well, do you ever feel that way with Mrs.
09:36Monster?
09:36Like she was a professional wrestler.
09:38Like, like that, is that as great with the flying off of the, the turnbuckles and all
09:42that nonsense?
09:42You know, it's funny.
09:44I do, man, when she has a, cause she's still wrestling, she's with TNA now.
09:47Uh, she just did a show with NXT as well.
09:50And, uh, when she, when they, they do those, uh, those hard matches with like chairs and
09:55doors and packs and, you know, and beating each other with sticks.
09:58Cause I'm like, damn baby, gotta let this go to, to make, you know, to make Yuli a situation
10:07and be like, wait, he's like, he's like, Oh, come on.
10:10Like, you know what?
10:11I think we, no matter if you do anything physical and you know what your body goes through and
10:18you have a loved one going through it, like you think differently, right?
10:24It's like me watching the kid play football, like, like people is like, Oh, it's fun.
10:30It's fun.
10:31No, it's still contact.
10:33And that's how you kind of look at it.
10:35Like, you know, this is contact and, and, and I just want you to be safe.
10:41Right.
10:42Right.
10:42And that's exactly, that's exactly what it is, man.
10:44When you got love, love for somebody, it's hard to, to, you know, watch them get hurt.
10:50Yuli, before we get you out of here, uh, Hector Lombard is going to be on this card.
10:54Uh, Hector's also, you know, been training down here forever, you know, come up and
10:59was a Bellator legend, a Bellator champion, and, you know, did his thing in the UFC.
11:03What does it mean to, to, to fight on a car with Hector and what that's going to, to bring
11:07to the table for this one?
11:08You know, Hector's like one of my brothers, man.
11:10I used to train with Hector all the time.
11:11He was a sparring partner of mine.
11:13He was a training partner of mine.
11:14Um, we actually just fought together about a week or two ago on a pillow fight in Orlando.
11:19We're on that same card, which was, which was super cool.
11:23Shout out to PSC, man.
11:24They gave me a great opportunity.
11:26Um, we're on ESPN two for, out of all the things I've done that that's what comes out
11:30on ESPN two is me pillow fighting, but, uh, but, uh, uh, yeah, no, it was, it's a great
11:38opportunity to have, uh, it's a, it's amazing to have Hector on this card.
11:41You know what I mean?
11:41He's, he's, he's truly a legend.
11:43So I'm excited for that.
11:45Yesterday I was with Yoel Romero.
11:47Uh, I did his podcast and I was telling him, you know, he's a, he's a great friend of mine
11:50too.
11:51He's like a brother to me.
11:52He's like family.
11:52So it was amazing to fight with him on the first DBX.
11:55He was the main event.
11:56You know, I got to, I got to be the feature fight and I'm going to feature fight on this
12:00one as well.
12:00So it's, it's awesome, man.
12:02No, it's a, it's a monster, monster sack card.
12:05Uh, Yuli Diaz is going to be fighting Phil Hawes.
12:08You got Hector Lombard making his DBX debut.
12:10Jarzino Rosenstreich in the first, uh, title fight against the Wolf, Rob Perez.
12:14This is going to be an awesome one, man.
12:15Can't wait for it.
12:16August 29th at the hangar in Miami.
12:19Appreciate you, buddy.
12:20Yes, sir.
12:20Thank you guys.
12:21I appreciate it, man.
12:22Alrighty.
