Tobin has had enough of the NFL's new virtual measurement system. Leroy claims we should move forward with technology... The irony!
Transcript
00:00We've got a couple of real personalities going out of the head coach.
00:03Are they practicing against them?
00:05I believe they are.
00:06I think just once this week.
00:07Okay.
00:08So the game's on Saturday?
00:10Yes.
00:11Okay.
00:11So the reason why they practiced twice was they practiced twice against Detroit?
00:18They practiced twice against Detroit.
00:20Once against everybody else.
00:21Once against Detroit, once against the Bears, and once against the Jags this week.
00:26Okay.
00:27So, you know, like –
00:30The plan is working so far.
00:34You're playing against or practicing against three teams who are formidable up front,
00:42especially on the defensive side.
00:45And you're putting yourself in tough situations to compete on a weekly basis
00:51because that is getting you ready for the season.
00:54So, yeah, like the plan is great.
00:56I'm not going to say the plan is not great.
01:00They're trying to fix what has ailed them the last couple years.
01:04However, even as excited as I am about what I've seen in the improvement from week to week,
01:11both by Quinn Ewers, by the running game, how they responded to getting dominated
01:17after the first practice, all these things, I'm still going to chalk it up to say it's only preseason.
01:26But in fairness to the Dolphins, they are running basic offense also.
01:31So, yeah, I'm excited.
01:36I hope – I hope that this is what the season looks like.
01:44I hope that this is the direction that takes them into the start of the season.
01:50And if they do, like – man, you know how hard it is to have a 15-play drive?
01:55Very, very hard.
01:56Right.
01:57And they do it like with each.
01:58For a team that is as wide open as they say, they methodically move the ball down the field.
02:04And that's kind of what San Francisco did.
02:07You know what I didn't like, though?
02:08What didn't you like?
02:10Hold on.
02:11Hold on.
02:12Hold on.
02:12Hold on.
02:14I have to ask this question.
02:16Yeah.
02:16So I can get my mind right.
02:18Okay.
02:19Is this serious or silly sauce?
02:22Serious to me.
02:23No.
02:24No!
02:24Can I ask Brittany if she felt the same way?
02:29Brittany?
02:30Go.
02:30Ask Brittany because I – like –
02:33Brittany, did you love or hate the virtual measurements?
02:43Because I got to be honest with you.
02:46I think I hated it.
02:47I hated it.
02:48I hated it.
02:49They didn't do the chains?
02:50No chains.
02:51No chains.
02:52Now, they showed this last year, but Brittany, like, it lost something.
02:56Did it not?
02:56It did, and I hated – so I was actually, after we did Gaten Day and Sunsert, I had to go work a bartending job.
03:04And I was, like, on the corner of, like, the TV.
03:07So I was watching the TV like this, trying to see the game.
03:11And there was a weird glare, and I see inches, and I'm like, what?
03:16Yeah.
03:16I'm like, wait, inches?
03:18So I'm like, oh, is it just, like, third and inches?
03:20Like, I'm so confused.
03:20And then I go look, and it's, like, third and eight inches.
03:26And I'm like, wait, what are we doing?
03:28And so I didn't like it because it was very confusing, and I didn't appreciate it.
03:31So my question is this.
03:38Don't you want it to be right?
03:40Okay.
03:41Here's the thing.
03:41One, I don't trust it.
03:43How come – wait.
03:45So, look, once they put where the first down marker is, they can digitally determine where the first down marker is.
03:52Once they mark the ball, they can always go to that spot.
03:56That's what they say.
03:57Chains don't get moved.
03:58Links don't get tangled.
04:01It took – no, no.
04:02It took too long.
04:03Then you have Mike McDaniel, who's looking at the referee on the sideline, who –
04:09he looked like he had a television on his watch.
04:13I'm like, is he Inspector Gadget?
04:15What is happening here right now?
04:17Mike McDaniel's trying to look at it.
04:18They're trying to look at it.
04:20And we're trying to figure out what could have been done in 10 seconds with the chain gang.
04:24No, it's not.
04:26Because, first of all, you got to bring the chain gang out.
04:29Let's just say this.
04:32In the business of officiating, the chain gang has been doing it
04:39for the longest, if you know what I mean.
04:41I get it.
04:42They're old.
04:43You got to bring them out.
04:44You got to unkink the chains, right?
04:48Then one guy sticks it, and the other guy pulls it,
04:51and you hope that he does it straight, right?
04:54No.
04:55There has to be some human error.
04:57Wait.
04:5810 yards is 10 yards.
05:00There's two things they can't take out of football.
05:01They can't take the kicks out.
05:03That's why they keep changing the rules, because then it wouldn't be football.
05:05It would be a ridiculous name for the sport.
05:06And they can't take the chains out.
05:09No.
05:10Even Bo Camper was on the broadcast, and he was like,
05:13you can tell he didn't like it.
05:16And they did this last year.
05:18They were just testing it, and I was like, what the hell is this?
05:21They're just showing it on the screen.
05:22And the argument I always get is tennis.
05:25And it's like, okay, here's the thing with tennis.
05:29Tennis is very important, first of all.
05:32You're talking about points.
05:33Second of all, it's happening all the time in a match.
05:35These things are razor thin on the line.
05:37We need, like, how many measurements are there at game, Leroy?
05:40Two?
05:41Two?
05:43And I need to go to this computer that I'm supposed to trust that they're just on the up and up.
05:49The chain gang is honest.
05:51It's honest work.
05:53And I don't like it being taken away from us.
05:55And they're taking away work from people as well, which I don't appreciate.
05:58Well, they still have them there.
05:59I don't know if they get the same.
06:00I mean, like, let's say you had the best.
06:01You get half the pain now because the computer doesn't have to work.
06:04You don't need the chain.
06:07Okay.
06:07Oh, my goodness.
06:08Why?
06:09You do.
06:09There's something.
06:10But, no, like, there's something.
06:12You don't need the chain.
06:14You need the markers so everybody can see the yard to gain or the line of scrimmage.
06:22So, those – you do need the markers.
06:28But to have the chain out there, like, you don't need the chain.
06:33No, it's so good.
06:34It's so good.
06:35It's so good.
06:36Like, you're going to tell me there's a playoff game happening.
06:38And there's a fourth.
06:39I'm the oldest person here.
06:41Why?
06:41Yeah.
06:41Why am I okay with moving forward with technology?
06:44And you guys are –
06:46It's one of the most – like, give me a more satisfying thing in sports.
06:51When your team either stops somebody short or gets it and the chain reaches out
06:59and it gives you a measurement that you are looking for.
07:03Yes.
07:03It's one of the best feelings in sports.
07:05It really is.
07:06And they've taken it away for cartoons.
07:08And, like, sometimes you see –
07:10So, you're waiting, they mark the chain, and you pull it, and you look at Adrian.
07:16I don't think he got it.
07:16It's the best thing ever.
07:17I don't think he got it.
07:17It's the best thing ever.
07:18Ah!
07:20Exactly.
07:21Dude, it is one of the best feelings.
07:23So, wait.
07:25So, you like the anticipation.
07:28Of course.
07:29I love it.
07:29I love it.
07:30What about when guys go to the sideline and the chain just gets bent up or the marker?
07:37Dude, I'm telling you, I can see on Mike McDaniels,
07:40in his face, he didn't like it because he's looking at dude's wristwatch
07:43with his television screen on there.
07:44He goes, what you got over there, huh?
07:46What you got?
07:46What you got?
07:47What you got?
07:47You know, so he wants to just see that.
07:49I don't like it.
07:50Can somebody ask –
07:51I don't know if any reporters are listening today.
07:53Can I get his honest –
07:55You know, it's a fun press conference day.
07:57Can somebody ask Mike McDaniel how he likes the virtual measurements?
08:01Because I think he hates it.
08:02I think we all hate it.
08:03But would you agree that the virtual measurement is more accurate than the chain game?
08:11That's what they say.
08:11I don't care.
08:12I don't know what it is.
08:13Don't –
08:13Dude, let me explain something to you.
08:15All right.
08:15Is it still –
08:16Here's the other –
08:16Here's the other thing you have to realize.
08:19They got to take notes because when they get blown up on the sideline, they need to know
08:27where the hell they got to put the mark back.
08:29With the virtual – you don't have to do that.
08:32Why can't they just have the virtual mark, like have a sense of something in their ear,
08:37like a metal detector.
08:39They put the base and then they can extend it.
08:43We still get the chain gang.
08:46I agree.
08:46I don't like this idea of – it's good in theory.
08:49You ever go to your local pharmacy and you have self-checkout?
08:52Some of them work good, like Publix's, but some of them don't.
08:55And they're like, please put it in the bagging aisle.
08:57Please put it in the bagging aisle.
08:57Oh, yeah.
08:58They make you wear each individual item.
09:01And I'm like –
09:01Publix used to do that.
09:02Right.
09:03And it freaks out.
09:04And they're like, someone's on the way.
09:05It's like, well, you know what?
09:06This person could have just been a cashier.
09:08Yeah.
09:09And so it's good in theory, but I don't think it's going to have – it's not going
09:15to have the satisfaction we all think it's going to have.
09:17It's not going to – imagine we're all sitting around and we're watching the Super Bowl.
09:20You do realize – you do realize that in any event, if he doesn't get to 10 yards, it's
09:29not a first.
09:30Whether you pull the chains out or you go virtual.
09:33Okay, but it doesn't feel the same.
09:34But it doesn't feel the same, you know?
09:36Oh, my goodness.
09:37It would be like – it would be like –
09:39I can't believe you two guys are against technology.
09:42I should be the one.
09:43I am.
09:44Like, we're never going to get – I think we all remember Dallas versus the Raiders in
09:492017 when Gene Steratore brought out the card and put it –
09:54Yes!
09:55Like, we all remember that moment.
09:56That's going to be – we're never going to have that again.
09:58We're never going to have it again.
10:00Look how I'm done.
10:01You made her – you made her – knock her camera off.
10:03My camera fell.
10:04Stiff arm style.
10:05Good.
10:06Leroy.
10:07Good.
10:08Leroy.
10:08Good.
10:09I don't want – I don't need the huddling around a group.
10:15Like, inlay.
10:16All right.
10:18This is it.
10:19No, no, no.
10:20It's not everybody standing looking at the chain.
10:22Everybody – and their officials.
10:23Back up.
10:24Back up.
10:25As a man who always –
10:26You're leaning in.
10:26You're leaning in trying to look down the line.
10:30I love that.
10:31And you're sitting here and you would have been like, oh, man, I don't like that
10:35because, like, back in the day – like, did you have a bad experience with the chains?
10:39No, besides hitting the guys on the sideline that don't know when to drop them
10:46and get out of there.
10:48I'm telling you, dude.
10:49There's something about it.
10:50When you get –
10:51Dude, 10 yards is 10 yards.
10:55I like things to be done quickly.
10:59Right?
11:00I mean, they used to have to take a television timeout for a measurement
11:07because it took so damn long.
11:11Man.
11:12So, anyway.
11:12So, I'm sorry.
11:13I'll see you at the time.
11:17Yeah, you're on the sideline.
11:17I asked you later.
11:18Stay there.
11:19Let's see you now.
11:19You're on the sideline.
