00:00Good arm angles, got to manipulate it and be able to throw around, guys, and Case Keenum's a veteran who can do that.
00:0611 personnel, one back, one tight end here.
00:12Richardson in motion.
00:16Handoff, Hankins, not there.
00:20Wasn't down originally, so to his credit, he alertly lunged ahead for a couple more yards.
00:25It'll be third and goal from the three.
00:26Well, Case Keenum may not have the bomber of an arm at this stage in his career, but the Bears really feel like he can, to Jim's point, really sling it around.
00:36And he's seen everything.
00:37I mean, we say that all the time, but when you have that luxury in this league, you have trust in your play caller, and that's what they have with Case Keenum.
00:48And a veteran presence that, at times, has been lacking in the quarterback room.
00:53It was a much younger room last year, even though Brett Rippen was in for a while.
00:58Third and goal.
00:59Play clock winding down.
01:00It's Keenum.
01:0213-year NFL veteran is going to sling it for the touchdown!
01:07It is caught by Hankins, and the Bears have the lead!
01:10Well, I like how he spread the love to a young.
01:18He could have ran that in for a touchdown.
01:19He could have ran it in, but instead, he helps out his fellow Texan in Hankins.
01:24That's right.
01:25So, you know, building some confidence, and that's what veterans do.
01:28I think, you know, Stacy brings up a good point.
01:31If you go back to his big year in Minnesota, you know, he actually was number one quarterback in the league against the Blitz.
01:38Yeah.
01:38He did not get sacked a lot.
01:40When the Bears last year, the past couple years, they have led the league in sacks.
01:44And I think that's another area that his veteran leadership is going to teach these young quarterbacks about protections,
01:50getting rid of the ball, not staying on schedule, not starting with long starts.
01:54That's where Case Keenum is really going to help these young QBs.
01:57Stacy said it.
01:58Austin Booker is having a monster day defensively.
02:02He got the turnover.
02:03Grabbed by Echols.
02:05And then from one Texan to another, Keenum to Hankins for the first Bears lead.
02:15Case Keenum's FBS passing touchdown record.
02:19He stood by himself up until Dylan Gabriel finished his college career with the same amount.
02:23Obviously, Gabriel with the Cleveland Browns now.
02:25And, of course, a Division II legend, Tyson Bajan.
02:28He just had his passing touchdown record passed last year by John Matacho, finished with 162 touchdown passes at the Colorado School of Minds.
02:38So a couple of collegiate legends.
02:40And, hey, Caleb Williams, you get your number retired at USC when you win a Heisman.
02:44That's a pretty good group in terms of resume right there.
02:47Here is Eric Azucama.
02:49An excellent return to Chicago territory.
02:52Bears special teams has not been as sharp in kick coverage today.
02:56That's going to upset Richard Hightower, who's the only holdover for the Bears coaching staff.
03:01Ben Johnson recognized how important Hightower was to the special teams' positives last year for Chicago.
03:07So he maintains his job.
03:0940-yard return, though, against Hightower's kicking unit.
03:12But let's not forget, Case Keenum was in Houston last year.
03:15Yep.
03:15Who was he mentoring?
03:17C.J. Stroud.
03:17C.J. Stroud.
03:18So he can bring that experience to Caleb Williams into 25.
03:22That's an excellent point.
03:23Williams, you can already see how much he's leaned on somebody like Case.
03:28Ali Gordon is the rookie running back.
03:31Six-round pick out of Oklahoma State.
03:33Standing next to yours.
03:35And he'll sling it away.
03:37Another incompletion for Quinn.
03:38That's a great shot.
03:39That's a lot of collegiate experience, talent, and accolades in that shot right there between those three.
03:46Yeah, with J.T. Barrett, their quarterback.
03:48Yeah, that's pretty good, too, right?
03:49J.T. Barrett had a pretty good run until they got hurt at Ohio State.
03:52That's right.
03:53I just think it says a lot about quarterbacks that play a lot of football.
03:58Bajon throwing 159 touchdowns, that's throwing a lot of football.
04:0115-50-plus starts in his career.
04:03I think we see Jaden Daniels last year, five-year starter.
04:06You look at Bo Nix.
04:08These guys played a lot of games in Bajon as one of those guys as well.
04:12Here's Gordon.
04:13Nice spin by Ali Gordon, who breaks through inside the Chicago 30,
04:18and the rookie makes an impact with his first opportunity.
04:22You got these three guys, Jaden Daniels, Bo Nix.
04:28Hey, Cam Ward, the number one pick.
04:29He started a lot of college games in different levels.
04:32To the fourth quarter we go.
04:36Preseason football is brought to you by Advocate Healthcare,
04:42the official healthcare partner of the Chicago Bears.
04:47Oh, man, you see the baby raise.
04:49Who doesn't love a baby raise?
04:50You can sign up your newest diehard fan to Baby Bears,
04:53brought to you by Advocate Healthcare for free.
04:54Kids two and under are eligible to join the team.
04:58ChicagoBears.com slash Baby Bears.
05:01Great shot.
05:02Staley loves it, too.
05:04That child is clueless as to what is happening right now,
05:06but a winner nonetheless.
05:09Ben Johnson looking at his defense.
05:11Fresh center downs for Miami from the Chicago 28.
05:14And on first down will be Ali Gordon again.
05:21He gets stopped after a short game.
05:23Roma Dunze is kind enough to pop on a headset.
05:26Second year in the National Football League.
05:28Last year's number nine pick by the Chicago Bears.
05:31Roma, thanks for the time, buddy.
05:32Yeah, thank you for having me.
05:33Appreciate it.
05:33First and foremost, obviously, the headliner of the offseason
05:37is Ben Johnson, just the big scoop to bring him to Chicago.
05:41You watched him from afar.
05:43You watched him from the division.
05:44What were your thoughts when the Bears hired Ben?
05:46Oh, I loved it.
05:47I loved it.
05:47You know, I got to put them twice last year
05:49and got to see their explosive offense
05:51and with saying, you know, J-Mo and all those guys
05:53over there doing great things.
05:54So when we hired him, you know, I knew we were in for a treat.
05:58So it's been nothing but, you know, hard work
05:59and a delight to work with him so far.
06:01Well, I watched you and Caleb in a pretty intense
06:04throwing session about three hours before.
06:07You seen that?
06:07I saw you.
06:08I saw you.
06:09Where is that chemistry going?
06:11Oh, it's good.
06:12It's good.
06:12You know, something that's continuing to build
06:14and, you know, that's why we're doing stuff like that,
06:16you know, throwing sessions anytime we can get more reps
06:18just to make it as crispy and as, you know,
06:21you know, seamless as possible.
06:23So all those reps matter, but we're building for sure.
06:26Roma Dunze kind enough to join us.
06:28It's brought to us by Advocate Healthcare.
06:29Third down and six for Quinn Ewers.
06:32Oh, what do we got?
06:35You got your analyst hat on too there, Rome,
06:37if you see something.
06:39Oh, blitz.
06:40It was a blitz.
06:41Ewers able to find Madison.
06:44Trying to get chased down.
06:45He does get chased down eventually.
06:48Oh, he'll be good.
06:49Carl Jones ended up missing a tackle,
06:51but finally the tackle was made.
06:53Rome is with us on the sideline, Jim.
06:55Well, you had your share of those run after the catch last year.
06:58You were third on the team in receptions, over 50,
07:00and I guess let the Bears fans know what do you think is the best part of your game?
07:06What do you think you'll show this year of what you can do?
07:09We know you're ultra-talented, and clearly last year I know everybody expects more
07:14because you're way capable of a lot more.
07:16Yeah, honestly, I don't know if I could pinpoint one specific thing.
07:19You know, I tell people I'm a very versatile receiver.
07:21I feel like I could be a yak receiver.
07:23I could be a possession.
07:24I could go, you know, make, you know, incredible plays down the field,
07:28short distance, medium.
07:29So, honestly, you know, I feel like I'm the guy for whatever they need.
07:33You know, whatever the play calls, whatever the, you know, whatever that play is,
07:38I could make a play on it.
07:39So, but, you know, I need to show all those different things.
07:41You know, I think I'll show different glimpses of those this next season,
07:44but I'd say all around I could do everything.
07:47Rome, work with me on this one.
07:48Somebody on your staff told me that if you and DJ had a baby, it would be Luther Burden.
07:56Because of the skill sets that you both play.
08:00Right, right, yeah.
08:01Because of your contested ability and run after the catch and because of your speed
08:07and then because of DJ's obviously ability to be incredibly versatile.
08:12So, I guess the point is, what have you seen from Luther Burden that he's adding?
08:17Man, he's a playmaker.
08:18I see, you know, when people make that, you know, analysis, you know,
08:22he has a great combination of skills, you know.
08:24He can make a play down the field.
08:26He can make, you know, as soon as he gets the ball in his hands,
08:28he, you know, has that DJS make people miss and get loose.
08:31So, he's shown a lot to us, you know, in the little time, you know,
08:34that he's been able to, you know, be out there and be live and make plays.
08:38So, you know, the sky's the limit for him on his potential,
08:41but he's just continuing to grow.
08:43Really appreciate the time, Rome,
08:44and best of luck coming up in year number two for you, buddy.
08:47Fair enough.
08:47Thanks, Rome.
08:48Good luck.
08:48Omadunse brought to us by Advocate Healthcare.
08:51Officials and trainers are checking on Alexander Madison.
08:54We'll step aside.
08:54One of the things you hope to avoid is any serious injury.
09:08We hope Alexander Madison is okay.
09:09He landed awkwardly and with some impact on the crown of his helmet
09:13when he got tackled by Alex Cook,
09:16one of the players who's battling for a secondary job
09:18and a special teams job for the Bears.
09:20Madison carefully coming off the field.
09:22Obviously, Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins
09:25are very cautious about anything related to the head,
09:28obviously, with Tua being the headliner of that.
09:31NFL concussions did go down to a significantly lower percentage last year.
09:35A lot of that has to do with the kickoff rules,
09:37the guardian caps that are being implemented not only in practices,
09:40but with some players in game.
09:43First and goal for yours as Miami looks to regain the lead.
09:46They've leaned on Ali Gordon on this drive,
09:54and a good job by Swayze Bozeman from the backside.
09:59Former Kansas City Chief came around to make the stop,
10:02and it's second and goal.
10:04Another player is down here.
10:07Good to see that Flowers hop up, but he went right back down.
10:11Yeah, it was Flowers.
10:12I didn't know if it was Bozeman on that play.
10:14Let's see.
10:21The Flowers tried to hop back up
10:23and then immediately went back down.
10:28Trey split last year with the Jaguars and Colts
10:30and the AFC South.
10:32It's a six-team in eight years.
10:35Hard hitter.
10:36Ninety-five NFL regular season games for Flowers.
10:43Safety at Oklahoma State made the transition to corner.
10:46He's played outside.
10:47He's played inside corner.
10:48Played for Pete Carroll for a long time.
10:53Adding some depth to that secondary,
10:55which is going to have Jalen Johnson hopefully back for week one,
10:58but if not, you have Tyreek Stevenson.
11:01You have Nashawn Wright, who's had a great camp.
11:03Terrell Smith nearly had a pick today.
11:06Yeah, drafted Zoff Frazier in the fifth round.
11:09Amir Speeds had some experience in the NFL.
11:12And like you said, whether it's Nashawn, they're all over six foot.
11:16You know, you mentioned Zoff Frazier.
11:17I mean, he's legit 6'3".
11:19Wright is a legit 6'3 and above.
11:22Probably 6'4 is what I look at him at.
11:24Trey Flowers is over.
11:25So there is a conscious effort to get bigger, to get longer,
11:30to have more length for what Stacey talked about at Dennis Allen.
11:33It's about contesting the receivers,
11:35disrupting their routes at the line of scrimmage.
11:38You have to have the arm length to do that.
11:41And so you can see that that was a predicted effort by the Bears
11:46to get bigger in their secondary.
11:48All eight of the outside corners listed for the Bears depth chart
11:51are all six feet or tall.
11:52There you go.
11:53Well, you're dealing against Jordan Jefferson.
11:55You're dealing against some big-time weapons.
11:58You know, this is the highest scoring division in football.
12:02You know, and you've got midline passers.
12:04As I mentioned, Jared Goff is going to be a midline passer.
12:07Love has some, you know, he's got the wiggle to him,
12:10but they want him, Coach LeFoult wants him to play midline.
12:13And I would think Kevin O'Connell,
12:15he wants J.J. McCarthy to play midline as well.
12:18So you better be able to contest things down the field
12:21when guys are thrown from the pocket.
12:23Think about all those receivers that Green Bay has added in the draft this past year
12:28to help Jordan Love out.
12:30Right back to Gordon looking for a hole.
12:33He may have been stopped.
12:34He was.
12:36Oh, Power Echols able to save the touchdown.
12:40Is that a fumble recovery?
12:41And right there, he's saved Gordon from entering the end zone with the ball.
12:47Now, Power Echols is taking advantage of the opportunity that he's been given here today.
12:52And just a really heads-up stand right there at the goal line.
12:56Remember, he recovered that strip sack earlier by Austin Booker.
13:02And I'll say this, this has been, for a lot of these veteran Bears defenders,
13:07as they've told us, the toughest training camp they've ever been through in their worlds.
13:11Imagine being a rookie now and jumping right into it.
13:13Here is Gordon over the top.
13:16And this time he's in for Miami, and the Dolphins are back in front.
13:19And it's a three-point Miami lead with a point after coming.
13:31That's 225-pound back in Ali Gordon.
13:34He is a big back who runs with power, left his feet, and able to power it in there.
13:41You've seen the ability to rush the football against the Bears' front.
13:44With some of the splash plays, it's negated some of Miami's drives.
13:47The goal line stand negated one of those drives,
13:50but the rush defense is going to be a question mark
13:52as we get closer and closer to the regular season.
13:57And for all the passing we talk about in this division,
13:59the running backs are no slouches in this division either.
14:03The Bears are going to have to be ready for that ground game
14:06in the grinded-out NFC North this year.
14:09Miami's got the four-point lead.
14:11Leads by 4-12 to play fourth quarter.
14:19Down to the field, and our man Luke Kanellis.
14:21Adam, before the break, you guys were talking about the battle
14:24at cornerback opposite Jalen Johnson, who's out with his injury.
14:28Tyreek Stevenson, Nashawn Wright both started this game.
14:31Terrell Smith should have had a pick six.
14:33And Josh Blackwell's been in the mix all day long.
14:35I asked assistant GM Ian Cunningham on our Fox 32 pregame show
14:40if Jalen Johnson will be ready to start in the opener against Minnesota.
14:44And here's his quote.
14:46Jalen has been doing a good job with his rehab.
14:49He's a pro.
14:49He's in all the meetings.
14:51No concern.
14:52We are going to take it day by day, week by week.
14:56Whenever he's ready, he's going to be out there and be ready to go.
15:00Guys?
15:01Bears extended Johnson last year.
15:04Bears have extended Kyler Gordon.
15:06Short free kick, kicking team.
15:08Ball be placed at the 40-yard line.
15:10Ball has to get to the landing zone at the 20.
15:13As soon as it falls short, it's a dead ball,
15:15and this is why kickers have to be precise even more so this year.
15:19That ball goes right to the 40-yard line now for Chicago
15:22and Austin Reed, a quarterback.
15:24You know, I always listen when veteran players like Kevin Byer say important things,
15:30and for him to say that Jalen Johnson is the best shutdown corner he has ever played with
15:35speaks volumes, so let's hope he gets back, week with him.
15:38Beg your pardon, I should say, it's still Case Keenan.
15:40We thought we were going to see Austin Reed right out of the gate in the fourth.
15:43Beg your pardon.
15:44It is Keenan.
15:45He's going to get another opportunity on this drive.
15:47Was looking downfield, tried to check it down for Ian Wheeler,
15:51and then multiple flags get thrown.
15:54I wonder if it's roughing the pass.
15:56Yeah, it might be for roughing here, which is another point of clarification.
15:59Personal foul, unnecessary roughness on the defense, number 59.
16:02It's a 15-yard penalty and an automatic first down.
16:05You get this a lot with players that are on third and fourth lines of the depth chart.
16:09Derek McClendon has been working his tail off all day,
16:11but he got a little aggressive with the body weight at the end of that play
16:15on top of the quarterback, Case Keenan.
16:17He can't have that weight on.
16:18Yeah, Case is, he's trying to load up to throw the post route down the field,
16:22good creep up up the field, and I kind of feel for defenders now.
16:25And as a former quarterback, body weight on you, I mean,
16:28that was never called back in the day, but now it's part of the age.
16:32Guys, this is one of the best stories for the Bears over the last year.
16:35This is Ian Wheeler.
16:37I think anybody who watched Hard Knocks found it very difficult not to be emotionally moved by Ian,
16:42who put his medical career as a doctor on hold to pursue his NFL dream.
16:47Had a great preseason last year.
16:49Had two touchdowns against Buffalo, but had that torn ACL in the preseason finale.
16:54We saw the emotional moments with his mother, who was consoling him after the injury,
16:58but the great moment of Ryan Poles bringing Ian into the office and saying,
17:02you're going to rehab with us, we're signing you, we're keeping you.
17:05And Ian Wheeler is back on the field, and it's just one of the best stories across the board for Chicago.
17:10A guy who was a speed burner at Howard University.
17:14Powers ahead to set up third down and short.
17:16You know, and it's an interesting running back room because the Bears had some guys come in over the weekend and work out.
17:24And one of those guys, Jamal Williams, who had all those 22 of them, touchdowns.
17:2722 touchdowns three years ago now in 2022 with Detroit.
17:32Exactly.
17:32And yards from scrimmage guy, too.
17:35So it'll be interesting to see if the Bears make any personnel decisions heading into this season.
17:39Well, Roshan, you would think, would be the big short yardage goal linebacker.
17:44But like you said, he's been out with the foot.
17:46Williams provides that ability if they were to sign him.
17:49And why Monungai has elevated up the depth chart.
17:52It ain't been thin to win at that position right now.
17:54Nice run by Wheeler.
17:55He picks up the first down as we approach 10 minutes to play.
17:59Of course, Jamal Williams had all that success.
18:01The nearly 20 rushing touchdowns under Ben Johnson as his offensive coordinator.
18:06Nice job here by Wheeler to keep his feet for the first down.
18:08Yeah, we were having so much fun calling those games in preseason.
18:12He was like a jitterbug out there.
18:14So it's a great story that you brought up with him.
18:16And, boy, he is fast.
18:18And he can regain that.
18:20And it's good to see him out on the field.
18:22And how about Eric Bien-Ami leading the charge with these guys?
18:26If you want to learn something about the running back position, get with him.
18:29Keenum rolling out.
18:30And a decent enough job by the tight end Thomas Gordon,
18:34who was holding his block to try to allow Keenum to get some positive yardage.
18:39This is a big step for Bien-Ami, who came close at times to head coaching positions.
18:45He was in rooms.
18:45He was in interviews.
18:47Went to the college level a year ago.
18:48And now taking over this running back room with some intensity,
18:51the same way it was when he was the coordinator in Washington.
18:53He's fascinating to watch at practice because of that intensity.
18:56But they drafted a guy named Isaiah Pacheco in the seventh round in Kansas City.
19:01Guess who his running backs coach was then?
19:03Yep.
19:04Pretty decent, right?
19:06Pacheco's turned out an excellent run the last couple of years.
19:09Wheeler gets blown up that time by the Miami defense and Channing Tindall.
19:15There he is right there, Eric Bien-Ami.
19:18A couple Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs over ten seasons.
19:22You mentioned his time at UCLA in the college game.
19:25And now he returns to the program.
19:28It's nice, Jim, too, to have that cross-section.
19:31Yeah, I think it says a lot about Ben-John.
19:33Here's another coach that's very demanding.
19:35You know, we haven't talked about Antoine Randall.
19:38I think he's very demanding as a wide receiver.
19:40Dan Rochard, who I know well from his days back at Michigan State,
19:43the old line coach, very demanding.
19:46And they should be.
19:47They should be.
19:48This team has not won a lot of games.
19:50They need an offense that needs more structure,
19:54that needs to score more points.
19:56And they're going to challenge these guys.
19:57And it will be with some demanding coaches that know how they want it run.
20:01Joel Wilson made the catch.
20:03The first-year pro out of Central Michigan.
20:05Eugene Asante came flying in.
20:08A flag was thrown.
20:09This is potentially for a defenseless player.
20:12Personal foul.
20:13Unnecessary roughness on the defense number 51.
20:16Penalty is half the distance and an automatic first down.
20:19Again, a defenseless player is somebody who is in the process of receiving the ball.
20:24And if there's forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless player,
20:28that's an unnecessary roughness penalty.
20:30And I think that's exactly what Asante got tagged with right there.
20:33Because, again, until you establish position as a runner when you catch the ball,
20:39that's why when you don't catch the ball and it's jarred loose, it's ruled incomplete.
20:42You were deemed to never have possession.
20:44When you have possession, you become a runner, quote-unquote,
20:47and are no longer a defenseless player.
20:50Wilson was still in the process of making the catch, hence why he's still defenseless.
20:54And there's the penalty for unnecessary roughness.
20:56And Joel Wilson, one of the players early on in camp, like two or three months ago,
21:04Ben Johnson was lauding and he was really pleased with.
21:09He's had a couple of practice squad stints with New Orleans,
21:12so Dennis Allen saw him a little.
21:14Buffalo, Green Bay, the Giants, the Bears.
21:16He's gone all over and now trying to find a home in Chicago.
21:21Here's Wheeler.
21:22Another flag is thrown.
21:23He's able to break the tackle.
21:24Ian Wheeler, touchdown!
21:27We will check the flag, but regardless, what an effort.
21:32This is probably coming back, but you have to appreciate the effort of Wheeler coming off the injury.
21:38On the offense, he did not set.
21:40That's a five-yard penalty.
21:42Maurice Alexander, unfortunately, negates that penalty,
21:46but you have to appreciate.
21:49It is impossible in the NFL to not appreciate when somebody takes the punishment and physicality of this league
21:57and you see him moving as if there were no injury.
22:01What an encouraging sign for this great story in Wheeler.
22:03Oh, yeah.
22:04He just keeps the caboose moving, plays through contact, plays through the whistle.
22:08Yeah, that's a big confidence boost.
22:10You know, when you score, you have a big play, and you just go back.
22:14Hey, I'm back.
22:14You tell yourself you're back.
22:16Fade route.
22:17Walker.
22:17It is touchdown for Chicago.
22:20And the Bears have the lead again.
22:22The little floating fade pass for the rookie out of Texas A&M by way of Grand Valley State.
22:38That makes my friend Jim Miller, the Michigander, very happy.
22:42What a play.
22:42What a throw.
22:43What a catch.
22:44Yeah, really just lays it up there perfectly for him,
22:46and all he's got to do is cradle it in the basket.
22:48Nice, accurate throw.
22:50Obviously, it's the one-on-one on the outside, and you've got to make the play.
22:53And that's a big receiver going down to the ground and making a play and securing the football.
22:596'3", 206-pound rookie, John A. Walker.
23:03Mike Elko, the new coach at Texas A&M, said he was the heart and soul of our team last year.
23:09And Walker shows up in his first NFL preseason game,
23:13and it's placed on a platter for him by Keenum.
23:20This broadcast is copyrighted by NFL Productions for the private use of our audience.
23:41Any other use of this broadcast or any pictures, descriptions, or accounts of the game
23:45without the consent of NFL Productions is prohibited.
23:47Let's take a look at how the quarterbacks fared through the air.
23:51It's presented by United Airlines and Tyson Bajan most of the first half.
23:55Keenum third and a little bit of the fourth.
23:58Both very efficient, obviously accurate with their throws,
24:01unfortunately for the tipped interception for Tyson Bajan.
24:05But both, again, playing from within the pocket,
24:07playing within structure, and moving the ball as the game went along.
24:11Nice return by A.J. Henning for Miami.
24:13They set up past the 40-yard line, 32-yard return.
24:19Keenum and Bajan talking about JT Barrett and Caleb Williams.
24:23It's going to be an interesting quarterback room this year.
24:25It is going to be an interesting quarterback room.
24:27I like the transparency from Ben Johnson.
24:29They're targeting a 70% completion rating from Caleb Williams.
24:33He was 63, I believe, last year, which was right around 31st in the league.
24:38The league average is 65-66.
24:40So that's a huge jump for him,
24:43and he's going to have to play within the progressions of this offense.
24:46That structure is so important.
24:48I think when you look at it, they want to be a midline team.
24:51Not that Caleb is an athletic and can get outside.
24:53We know he can evade and make plays with his legs,
24:56but to avoid the sacks and all those things,
24:59they led the league in sacks last year.
25:01He's got to be better at playing within the pocket, timing, and rhythm,
25:05certainly from the underneath the center stuff
25:06that we talked about earlier in the game today.
25:10Caleb Williams was sacked 68 times as a rookie,
25:1216 more than any other player.
25:1528 of those sacks came after he held the ball for five or more seconds.
25:19So obviously the line at times held up,
25:22but you've got to get rid of the football at one point.
25:24It's not all on the offensive line, and Stacey nailed it.
25:28Like when she was down there watching him throw in that pre-game warm-up,
25:31that's the coach, the head coach, talking to him, to his quarterback.
25:36Hey, here's the timing.
25:37Here's what I need.
25:38Here's when the ball's got to come out.
25:39You can't take a sack here.
25:41There are certain plays that are no-sack situations,
25:44and he's got to be better at that process that Stacey alluded to,
25:48the process of going through his reads from one to two to three,
25:53and you can see that she explained with Tyson Bajan,
25:55even after the play's over.
25:57Hey, man, how's my third guy looking?
25:58How's my fourth guy looking?
26:00Go through your progression and read it out.
26:03Two good plays by Henning.
26:04The return and then that catch and a nice sling by Quinn Ewers.
26:09Now Ollie Gordon back to work.
26:11Swayze Bozeman is there for the stop.
26:13The NFL is getting more and more to the progression offenses,
26:19which is a fascinating combination with all of these college quarterbacks.
26:24Quinn Ewers among them, who is coming into the NFL.
26:27You hear all this stuff about their seven-on-seven prowess,
26:30but can they read the field?
26:31Can they progress through one, two, three, four?
26:34So many college quarterbacks play the spread.
26:36They play half-field reads.
26:37It's one, two, read, and go.
26:39So this is a transition for any young quarterback,
26:42and Caleb Williams included, even though this is year two for him.
26:45Yeah, and it's a passing league.
26:46All the rules are geared towards passing in the football.
26:49There's no question about it.
26:51The pass interference calls, the roughing the passer calls.
26:54You look at the sheer volume of pass plays called per game,
26:58and obviously, like you said, the RPO and the wide receiver screen game
27:01are really easy throws that have added to higher completions.
27:04Might have a pass interference flag potentially here.
27:08This Jeremiah Walker was in coverage of A.J. Henning,
27:12favorite target of this drive.
27:13There is no foul for defensive pass interference.
27:15There we go.
27:16So a good discussion there by the officials.
27:18They can go over that.
27:21Walker's pumped up after all that.
27:23The undrafted free agent rookie out of FCS, Stephen F. Austin.
27:27Al Harris.
27:29You remember Al Harris?
27:30We want the ball.
27:30We're going to score.
27:31Sorry, my buddy Matt Hasselbeck.
27:33Harris for Green Bay had that famous interception in the playoffs,
27:36but he's been an excellent position coach.
27:39Good to see Trey Flowers back out there as well.
27:41I'm glad to see him as a bear.
27:42He picked me off way too many times.
27:46He's a big corner.
27:47He created some nightmares.
27:48I was going to say, that's a tall corner at Al Harris.
27:51These players love Al Harris.
27:53They do.
27:55Third and eight.
27:56Yours.
27:56Good break on the ball by Joshua Blackwell.
27:59And Al Harris loves it.
28:01Remember this season that Trayvon Diggs had 11 interceptions?
28:05I believe it was.
28:06A couple years ago for Dallas.
28:06It was 11 or 12, something like that.
28:08That was unreal.
28:09And then a couple years later,
28:10Deron Bland has five pick sixes in Dallas.
28:14He transformed that secondary,
28:15and that's what the Bears think he's going to do here.
28:18Take a look at this reaction.
28:19Look at the intensity of Al.
28:20Five years as a DB coach in Dallas for Mike McCarthy.
28:28He was an intern in Miami in 2012 when Ben Johnson was on staff.
28:34This is within Jason Sanders' range.
28:37His long is 57.
28:38This is 56.
28:41And NFL kickers just make it look so much easier now.
28:44We saw more 50-yard field goals last year than at any point in NFL history.
28:47And Jason Sanders is among the elite.
28:51Great play by Blackwell, though, to force the field goal try.
28:56And tie this game up at 24 on the three points from Miami.
28:59Good effort on the secondary in that last series.
29:04Yeah, tremendous effort right here.
29:07A little bit of a tug with Blackwell getting some extra minutes here.
29:12Very serviceable player for the Chicago Bears.
29:14I'm just wondering who's going to win, Jim Miller on his way to Detroit via his vehicle
29:21or the Miami Dolphins who are headed to Detroit to face the Lions in joint practices.
29:26Who's winning?
29:27I'm winning that race.
29:29If the Bears are going to win that race, I'm winning that race home.
29:32I've been on this camp tour way too long.
29:34My butt is getting home.
29:37Are you a speedster?
29:38Are you like, you have a heavy foot?
29:39We're not going to talk about my traffic record, Stacy, but anyway, I don't care who pulls me over.
29:46I'm going home fast.
29:48You have to return this ball.
29:50It landed in the landing zone.
29:51Oh, it went off the pylon.
29:52Oh, this is going to be an interesting call.
29:55That is a break.
29:56It's a touchback.
29:57It touched the pylon, but the touchback's going to go to the 20, not the 35, because the ball landed in the landing zone.
30:05So that's about as precise of a kick as you could ask for, other than maybe going out in the back of the end zone.
30:11Well, it's interesting.
30:11We've seen the kickers play.
30:13They're trying to do this line drive game.
30:15You know, he missed it.
30:15As you pointed out, the last one.
30:17Last kick was short.
30:18He didn't make it into the box, which was necessary, but they're playing with these kickoffs a little bit this year,
30:23knowing that the return game is going to be a big part of it.
30:25They want them to bring it out.
30:28How can they make it the most difficult?
30:30You know, kicking them a knuckleball, a line drive ball, where they've got to really play the bounce is going to make it more difficult.
30:37Austin Reed checks in.
30:40Had a good preseason last year.
30:41It was in the room.
30:43On the practice squad, he finds Wheeler.
30:45There's some of the speed from Ian Wheeler and a good game for Austin Reed.
30:50Out of the gates.
30:55Good fake, good play action fake, dumping it out there.
31:01Easy read for the quarterback and turns it upfield.
31:04Now shows his ability and space.
31:06That's what he was known for.
31:08We saw so many plays last year, jitterbug type of mentality, how he can play and turn upfield.
31:13He is cat quick and looks like he's got his juice back.
31:16He's got his speed.
31:18Now he's got Austin Reed, that quarterback, right back to Wheeler.
31:21He'll pick up a few yards here.
31:23You guys were talking about it.
31:25The season's closing in.
31:26Bears have one more preseason home game against Buffalo.
31:29And then the home opener in week one against Minnesota on a Monday night.
31:33Limited number of single game suites are available this season.
31:36And entertain your family, your friends, your business associates in a premium climate controlled suite,
31:41which I think all of us would appreciate today.
31:44ChicagoBears.com slash suites or 888-792-3277.
31:47If you've heard a little bit of buzzing in the back, that's the fan that Stacey was kind enough to bring into the booth today on a 90-plus degree day with plenty of humidity.
31:56Off the fake read.
31:58Somehow got it to his intended target in John Jackson, and he sprints for the first down.
32:04I'm sure we do have Dolphins fans, though, watching.
32:07These Miami Dolphins couldn't be happier to be here in this weather.
32:10I was going to say, it's a little rough.
32:11I will say for the inaugural broadcast of Stacey, she's a good teammate.
32:16It's the more you can do, Adam.
32:17So when she was making her points, she didn't know, but she was turning her fan towards me.
32:21And I was like, what a great teammate.
32:23This is going to work out really good.
32:25Multitasking is extraordinary.
32:27And I'm excited.
32:28I get to travel to Europe with Stacey.
32:30She's going to be part of our Fox NFL Network crew when we're in Berlin to watch the Colts and Falcons in November.
32:39So I'm excited.
32:39I've never been to Germany.
32:40You've done a lot of European traveling.
32:42Can't wait.
32:43I've done Frankfurt.
32:44Frankfurt, yep, Germany's a great trip, and all these international games, really.
32:50And by then, you know, we'll have a good feel about this NFL season, right?
32:54And as you look around the league, always fascinating storylines at this time.
32:58But when you think about this division, the NFC North, it's just a bloodbath.
33:03It was last season with a 15, 14, and 11 win teams.
33:07And I expect nothing less, Jim, this year.
33:10I think there's going to be a high scoring again.
33:12And it's going to be critical for these Bears to score points.
33:15There is Walker again.
33:16He's been productive.
33:17He picks up the first down.
33:19And right out of the gate, you get two divisional games.
33:22Bears didn't play a divisional game until week 11 last year.
33:25They got a start out of the gate with two divisional games this year with Minnesota and Detroit.
33:30Yeah, no Jordan Addison, right?
33:31He's suspended for the first three games.
33:33That's important that, you know, that first game here at Soldier Field on Monday Night Football, that's going to be electric.
33:39Yep.
33:40And then, you know, you consider just where Green Bay is with their quarterback and the Detroit Lions with new play callers.
33:46Well, like you said early for Dennis Allen, how aggressive will he be?
33:49First-year starter in J.J. McCarthy.
33:51Yeah, he's only in year two, but he's essentially a rookie and then Detroit.
33:55You know, they're the reigning division champ.
33:57You're going to get battle-tested early.
33:59And we all know the best pathway to the playoffs is through your division.
34:04You have to win your division.
34:05Good start with the division games.
34:07They'll get an early bye for the Bears this season.
34:10It's the third-hardest schedule based on opponent win percentage.
34:14And, again, a lot of that has to do with the division because you're going to play Detroit, Minnesota, Green Bay twice.
34:19You've got the AFC North, and you've got the NFC East.
34:23Like, think about that trip back to Washington after the Hail Mary that we saw last year.
34:28And this is going to be a fascinating season for each team in the North.
34:31There is Richardson on the screen, blocking by Walker, stays on his feet, trying to hold on to that football, and he will.
34:39It'll set up third down here.
34:41Yeah, think about this.
34:42I was just in Los Angeles talking to a lot of NFL people.
34:45They think the North in the NFC and the AFC North are two of the toughest divisions in football, and they're probably the two most physical.
34:53We know that about the AFC North, which sent three teams to the playoffs two years ago.
34:58The NFC North did that last year, and a lot of that has to do with the physicality.
35:02I'm just curious about this matchup with Pittsburgh and Aaron Rodgers.
35:07Yeah.
35:07Is he going to own the Bears?
35:09Oh, I didn't go there.
35:10Dales, he didn't go there.
35:11He didn't do it.
35:12I'm going to see him in week two in his home opener for Pittsburgh against Seattle.
35:16I'll be fascinated to see what it's like.
35:18Bears look for the win with Austin Reed in the two-minute drill next.
35:27Game number two, you'll take on another quality AFC team.
35:30You're going to take on Buffalo and Kansas City in the preseason the next two weeks.
35:33Our crew will not be with you, but the game will be on the channel you're watching right now.
35:37It's on Fox, national televised game.
35:40It'll be Joe Davis, former Chicago Bear Greg Olson, our good buddy, and the great Pam Oliver.
35:45They'll all have the call on the nationally televised Fox broadcast next week,
35:49and then we'll be back with you in KC for the preseason finale.
35:53And here you go.
35:53You hope you have a little bit of drama at the end of all these games.
35:56Two-minute drill, third and three for Austin Reed and the Bears.
35:59In field goal range right now.
36:03So they'll try to stay in field goal range.
36:07And barely back to the line of scrimmage is Wheeler.
36:10Daquan Jackson made a nice play for Miami's defense there.
36:16Now the timeout will be used by Miami to save as much time as possible.
36:22And let's see if the offense stays out there or not.
36:25We did see some great stuff from the Bears' defense, though.
36:29Blue Moon brings you your player of the game.
36:33No shock, Austin Booker.
36:34What a day he had.
36:36Really, hey, his effort planned.
36:37He did.
36:38He looks stronger.
36:39He never quits in terms of his motor.
36:41Hey, you end up on three sacks.
36:43Not bad there.
36:44The quarterback crazy.
36:45Disrupted a lot of things in the forced bumble.
36:47Look at these plays.
36:48Effort plays.
36:50Stripping for the ball there.
36:51Doesn't come out, but he's going for it.
36:53Gets after the quarterback there.
36:54There's just kind of the swan dive there, but he didn't stop.
36:58Nice motor all day.
37:03Again, I'll be fascinated to see what the decision-making process is like in the regular season.
37:09Right now the offense is out on the field, and Dan Campbell went for plays like this in his time as the head coach
37:16and continues to do so.
37:17On fourth down, they're taking a shot!
37:21And incomplete, no flag.
37:24Walker the intended target.
37:25Isaiah Johnson was in coverage.
37:28So it's a turnover on downs, and Miami takes over at the 36.
37:38Only coaching point for me.
37:39Lay it out there.
37:40Know your receiver.
37:41Know its speed.
37:42Make him go get it.
37:43There's no need to underthrow him.
37:44He had him by a step.
37:45Let it go, Austin.
37:48Yeah, he almost underthrew it, hoping for the pass interference penalty.
37:51Yeah, he just had the wrong club on that one, really.
37:55So now you put a defense into a two-minute situation.
37:57Again, I will be curious as the season goes on to watch Ben's play-calling situationally on fourth down.
38:04How aggressive will he be?
38:06Will he take after Dan Campbell in that sense and have trust in your defense to get a stop?
38:12Miami has one timeout left.
38:16Ewers screen pass.
38:19Theo Weiss Jr. will get tackled by Trey Flowers.
38:23100 seconds left for this fourth quarter.
38:25Bears fans are going to have to be patient, though.
38:27This is going to take time.
38:28It wasn't an immediate, as they go on the hurry up right here, it wasn't immediate in Detroit.
38:34It took half a season, really, to figure out what he wanted to do offensively, Ben Johnson.
38:39Trey Flowers makes the tackle on Andrew Armstrong.
38:42It's ruled an incomplete pass.
38:45That's a big break for the Bears.
38:46The clock stops at a minute 24.
38:48It'll be third down.
38:50Don't forget, there was a big zero in the win column for Dan Campbell in Detroit for quite some time until they finally broke through.
38:55Well, it's a great point by Stacey.
38:57The first camp I did was Detroit.
38:59That's year five of Dan Campbell.
39:00Then I came straight to the Bears year one of Ben Johnson.
39:05So it's going to take time to build this.
39:08I mean, they're just in the infancy stages of what they want to be.
39:11And like I said, that's year five of Dan Campbell and why they're coming off a 15-win season.
39:16Fourth down and five.
39:19Good play by Jamry Croma, who split last year on the Patriots and Bears practice squads.
39:25And again, went for it on fourth down in field goal range and said,
39:30Okay, defense, we didn't get it done.
39:32Go get a stop.
39:33Dennis Allen's defense needs one on fourth and five.
39:45Four-man rush.
39:46Ewers over the middle.
39:48It's caught somehow by Gordon.
39:49And he gets dragged down after he held on in a very tight window.
39:56Carl Jones finally makes the stop.
39:58It's first down, Miami.
40:0219-yard pickup.
40:03Boy, that was not a big window to deliver that ball for yours.
40:06Less than a minute to go.
40:11And a whistle.
40:13It'll be a false start against Miami.
40:17False start.
40:19Offense number 75.
40:21That's a five-year penalty.
40:23First down by rule.
40:25This foul carries a 10-second runoff.
40:29Quick reminder, you can sign up your newest diehard fan to Baby Bears.
40:33Brought to you by Advocate Healthcare for free.
40:34Kids 2 and under eligible to join the team.
40:37ChicagoBears.com slash Baby Bears to register today.
40:41The Dolphins had a timeout.
40:45But they're going to save the timeout for the potential field goal
40:48if they can get into range again.
40:50That penalty hurts them, taking them out of field goal range for the time being.
40:54There's that 10-second runoff because the clock was moving.
40:57And it's a penalty that would typically stop the clock inside of two minutes.
41:01Ewers throws on a move.
41:03And it's incomplete behind Eric Azucana.
41:06That Croma in coverage, or with pressure, I should say.
41:11Jammery brought the heat that time.
41:13Yeah, just forcing him off the mark for Croma.
41:18Corses a quarterback to throw behind the receiver.
41:21He's throwing right, throwing across his body.
41:23Just creates enough.
41:24Taking him off the mark where you're incomplete with the pass.
41:31Again, you get down inside the 40, you're pretty much in Sanders' range.
41:35Yeah, I agree.
41:36That's why Miami kept that timeout in case they need to stop the clock.
41:41Well-protected Ewers throws and no flag.
41:45They had Walker covering Azucana on the outside that time.
41:48Third and 15.
41:49I think if you're Miami, you're probably looking at taking one more shot to try to get the first down.
42:03I didn't like that play call there or him taking a shot there.
42:06I would have preferred to do it on second down because in case you get seven or eight, now you're in third and medium.
42:12Right.
42:12And if you don't get it, now you're in field goal range.
42:14It's probably not the right move.
42:15And it was Xavier Carlton who got his hand on it, the undrafted free agent rookie out of Cal.
42:346'6", 275.
42:36Again, another long defensive lineman.
42:38Big defensive ends.
42:406'6", gets his hands up.
42:42Way to disrupt the pass.
42:43Good job defensively.
42:45You can tell the effort is there on all levels of this defense.
42:50We play much more discipline in certain aspects.
42:54Dennis Allen hoping for one more stop.
42:56Bears still have three timeouts to try to get into Santos' range if they get the ball back.
43:02They bring the heat here.
43:04Here they come.
43:04It's a full house blitz.
43:06Ewers goes down in Bears territory.
43:09The ball come out.
43:10It is Alex Cook with the play.
43:15Turnover on downs regardless.
43:18And Cook comes up huge.
43:20The former Panther and Giant.
43:22And not only do they get the ball, they get it way closer to field goal range now with three timeouts.
43:28That was a bad play calling sequence by Miami those last three plays.
43:33Don't like how they managed it.
43:34But, again, you look at Dennis Allen.
43:36This is a telling call.
43:37Got to have it play.
43:39What do you do?
43:39You bring the heat.
43:40You bring in the blitz.
43:41All the things we talked about the whole broadcast.
43:44More aggressive.
43:45He will blitz more.
43:46He'll go man to man.
43:48He'll take chances.
43:49Here they make the play of the game.
43:50Give themselves an opportunity for a win.
43:52I still go back to going for it from right around here on fourth down and not converting, but having confidence in your defense to get a stop.
44:00They got it.
44:01They've got three timeouts, and they're in position to win their preseason opener.
44:05That's some movement up front.
44:11They get five yards further back.
44:14Ball start.
44:15Offense number 74.
44:17That's a five-yard penalty.
44:19First down.
44:19No runoff.
44:20Clock was stopped.
44:21Clock was already stopped, so there's no runoff.
44:23That's why there's no runoff.
44:24So you go from about a 59-yard field goal to what is now a 64-yarder, which would be right near the NFL record.
44:31What do we have, 66 a couple years ago from Tucker off a crossbar?
44:35And that's still the record right now.
44:42Santos as long as 55.
44:44Here is Reed down the middle.
44:46That should have been a catch.
44:48Oh, out of the hands of John Jackson.
44:56Because we got two guys in there.
44:58He had it.
44:59Just got to squeeze it.
45:00Finish the play.
45:01Yeah, these are the plays you've got to make in order to become an official member of the Chicago Bears.
45:07But really, physical route.
45:09Just couldn't finish it off.
45:10Not a bad throw.
45:12Just slightly out of the reach there across the middle.
45:17Antoine Randall-El handling the receiving core.
45:21Deep drop.
45:22Reed delivers.
45:23It's incomplete.
45:24It's probably actually a break for the Bears because you'd probably want one more play here.
45:30Not have the clock running.
45:32And now you're really playing for field goal positioning right now.
45:35Yeah, totally agree with that.
45:36Stops the clock.
45:37And it would have been a tough catch, too, as well.
45:39But to get the benefit of an incompletion, now, like you said, you can strategize.
45:44Hey, what's the next play call?
45:45Let's regroup here.
45:46Let's get in the field goal range and call the exact play that you want to execute.
45:50Yeah, there's really no wind today, by the way.
45:53There's some minor gusts here and there, but it's pretty dead on the field.
45:57You'd think it would be fairly straight on for Santos.
46:01Here is Reed.
46:02Pressure coming with an extra body from Miami.
46:05Rifles it sideline.
46:06Incomplete for Jackson again.
46:10Now, with 10 seconds left and essentially out of range,
46:14you have to pick up a first down here on 4th and 15th.
46:18The line to gain is the 31.
46:20So, what's your best call for 15 to 20 yards now?
46:24Well, I'm all for the hook and ladder right here.
46:29Yeah, we've seen plenty of trickery at various times from Ben Johnson.
46:32Hook and ladder.
46:34I saw the girls in flag football at halftime execute the hook and ladder.
46:39They scored on the play.
46:40Why not?
46:41I've got a single high.
46:42I want something right down the seam.
46:44Just to get into field goal range.
46:46You can stop the clock with a timeout.
46:48Reed throws incomplete and it's a turnover on downs.
46:53Toure was the closest to it.
46:56And it'll be five seconds left on the clock.
46:59Well, neither team in good field position could execute well down the stretch.
47:13Should remind you that there's no overtime in the preseason.
47:16Looks like if the pocket was cleaner, he had the end cut coming over the middle there.
47:22It looked like Toure was going to be wide open.
47:25But, unfortunately, the protection broke down.
47:27Had to scramble to his right, which made a very difficult throw if he even attempted it for Austin Green.
47:33So, if you're Miami here, opportunity to try something, maybe end of game if you want.
47:39There's also the question of whether you want to put something on film that teams could take a look at from down the road for a potential situation like this.
47:49So, maybe just a straight up, everybody go and see what we get.
47:59Lobb, it is dropped.
48:01And still a second left or no?
48:03Let's see if they put an extra second on the clock or we're headed home.
48:14Just as we had at the end of the first half for the Bears, it'll be an opportunity for one more play for Miami.
48:24Head coaching debut for Ben Johnson.
48:26You really get a lot more thrown at you when you're in the head coaching spot, especially when it comes to clock and personnel management.
48:32Sideline etiquette, how do you communicate with your coaches?
48:34We know through the FanFest, he didn't like all the chatter.
48:37He wanted it to a minimum in how the coaches communicate.
48:41So, you're working on all that personnel groupings, a lot of communication going on that they're working through.
48:46So, seven back in coverage, a lot of ground to cover.
48:49It's flipped back to Gordon.
48:51Ali Gordon looking for another Miami miracle.
48:55It's Weiss.
48:56It's on the ground.
48:58It's still loose.
48:59And the whistles finally blow the play and the game dead.
49:05Was it Kenyon Drake a couple of few years back against the Patriots that final game where he was able to make a play out of it like that?
49:11Got some flashbacks all of a sudden.
49:13But Johnson and McDaniel see a tie for their teams in the preseason opener.
49:20Your thoughts as to what we saw these 60 minutes of game time?
49:23Well, these 60 minutes for me are a culmination of really four days for the Miami Dolphins here in Chicago, joint practices on Friday, and putting it on display in a scenery that these coaches can evaluate.
49:36And that's what's important.
49:37Dennis Allen got to evaluate a number of his younger players, third four stringers.
49:42And then we'll move on to the next one against the Buffalo Bills.
49:44But I thought the quarterbacks were efficient, by and large, starting with Tyson Bajan.
49:49Yeah, some good, some bad.
49:50There's a lot they got to clean up.
49:51You mentioned the penalties.
49:52Those got to clean up, you know, and situations.
49:55But I thought overall, a good first step for the Chicago Bears.
49:59Saw the positive plays, being aggressive.
50:01I thought Dennis Allen's defense did a nice job.
50:03And as Stacey alluded to, the quarterbacks.
50:05I thought, you know, when Tyson Bajan and Keenum were in there, they, with structure, went down the field and executed the offense the way they want it to be run.
50:14But they're not there yet.
50:15They still got a lot of things to clean up and tighten up as they go.
50:18The excitement's always high when you go into preseason game one.
50:20It's always good to temper the expectations after preseason game one.
50:24Hard not to get excited just because we get the chance to see football back on our screens and in front of us here today.
50:30So preseason game number one is down.
50:32Bears will be back here at Soldier Field next Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills.
50:37You can watch that with the national crew on Fox.
50:41Great job by our crew for Jim Miller, Stacey Dales, Luke Kanellis, Jasmine Baker, the wonderful women and men of our crew.
50:48Adam Amin Singh Solon from Soldier Field.
50:51Bears and Dolphins tied up at 24 in game one.
50:54Dolphins head to Detroit to take on the Lions in their second game.
50:57Bears and the Bills here next week.
