00:00The world has raised its voice in support of the people and government of Venezuela in rejection
00:11of the new aggressions of the U.S. executive. And in Argentina the government of Buenos Aires
00:20will launch a plan to resume the construction of thousands of houses halted by the military
00:24administration. And the Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip have resulted in a Palestinian
00:33death toll of 61,499 since October 7, 2023, with 69 deaths reported in the latest 24-hour period.
00:46Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Delezu Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:50We begin with the news.
00:54The world has raised its voice in support of the people and government of Venezuela rejects
01:08the new aggressions of the U.S. executive. In the South American region, governments and
01:13social movements from Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Cuba, and the Dominican
01:18Republic, as well as local authorities and Venezuelan movements express their support for the constitutional
01:23president of the Uruguayan nation, Nicolás Maduro, of the declarations of the United States Attorney
01:28General Pamela Ponte. Central America also expressed its support from El Salvador, Honduras, Costa
01:34Rica, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. They rejected the instrumentalization of the U.S. legal system
01:39against a free and sovereign nation. For the North, governments and grassroots organizations
01:44in Mexico and the United States supported the Venezuelan head of state and rejected the false
01:48accusations against him. The reaction of the lawfare attempt against Venezuela and its authorities
01:53echoed in parallel in Europe, Asia, and Africa, with France, Iran, and Egypt sending strong
01:59support to the Bolivarian nation.
02:00And in this context, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro expressed his gratitude for the support
02:13received from sovereign peoples around the world and denounced the terrorist persecution carried
02:18out by the United States. The Venezuelan President expressed his gratitude for the mobilization
02:22of the military and popular forces and for the support of society in general, in defense of
02:27peace and sovereignty at this crucial time for the country. Furthermore, the head of state
02:32denounced the United States' attempts to impose violent hegemony on the world's emerging economies.
02:44And Venezuela's Minister of Interior and Justice Diosdado Cabello informed Monday that authorities
02:49had found a storehouse full of explosives with a great destructive power intended to be used
02:54by far-right-sponsored terrorists against the Bolivarian nation.
03:01The people reported a situation in the state of Monagas, the location of explosives in the state of Monagas,
03:08we immediately ordered an investigation. The National Bolivarian Police and the GOES went there,
03:15and arrived at a warehouse, and we found a warehouse with an impressive amount of explosives with an even
03:21greater destructive power.
03:26And in this regard, Cabello and President Maduro spoke about the terrorist attempts of the extreme right
03:31to try to destabilize the country and disrupt its peace and sovereignty.
03:35We have to remember that Congressman Jorge Rodriguez, more than once, and myself too, denounced,
03:46even almost with name and surname, the coordinates and I remember that once I put the initials in the program,
03:54Goudro this is the Gringo link, Jordan Goudro, we put the initials and Jorge gave details, even the house.
04:05They turned themselves into all the Colombian government agencies, and well, what they were doing was to reinforce the security of those who were training.
04:16Well, just the same, he has come up with this president, we have been denouncing, for quite some time now, the attacks that they wanted to make on hospitals.
04:29And I ask myself, why would they attack a hospital?
04:33If Netanyahu does it against the Palestinian people, the first thing he did was to destroy all the hospitals for the Palestinian people.
04:40To institutions, military and police headquarters.
04:45Because they hate the military forces, they hate the police, because they are the guarantors of stability, sovereignty and peace.
04:53To oil facilities.
04:55Because they hate the economy and want to destroy it.
04:58Electrical installations, services.
05:00Because they have already attacked the electric service several times, and they hate the people.
05:05Public services, subways, transportation.
05:10Besides, it was something that one said, but because recreation centers, where people go, to parks.
05:19Two weeks ago they tried something terrible, the use of high explosives, in Plaza Venezuela.
05:26In Ecuador, 12 babies died in a hospital in Guayaquil.
05:32In Guayaquil, the children's death raised suspicions about medical negligence at the hospital and a lack of medical equipment.
05:38The case triggered a reaction of authorities, the National Assembly and the State Attorney General's Office.
05:43Let's see more details in the following report.
05:45Ecuador is in the National and International Public Eye again, after a local media reported that 18 newborns died from an infection caused by reused nasal cannulas.
06:02Days later, the Ministry of Health confirmed the deaths of 12 babies, but attributed the cause of two of these cases to be related to a bacterial infection, while the other deaths were attributed to medical complications.
06:13This immediately generated reactions from the public, who denounced that this is the result of government mismanagement in the health sector.
06:27Take action on the matter, check and see which doctors are qualified to operate on the children, so that this does not happen again to other parents, to other mothers, so that the government becomes aware.
06:42I think that people should join in so that this does not go unpunished, as well as the things that are happening here in Ecuador, especially not only in our city, but in all the cities that are like this.
06:58I do call on the president to take action in this matter.
07:01They are not the only ones who reject and criticize what happened. The case provoked the reaction of various authorities such as the mayor of Guayacul, who condemned the incident, assuring that the nasal cannulas do not cost more than four dollars.
07:19He said that the social action department of the municipality will approach the relatives to help in whatever is necessary.
07:26Meanwhile, the legislature summoned the doctors of the hospital where the newborns died, the minister of health and the state attorney general to appear while the public prosecutor's office began an investigation into the terrible event.
07:40They also have to improve care because there are really a lot of bacteria, and it's really in all hospitals, and that's why they have to put more budget and more attention in health and education, the government.
08:01Meanwhile, concern and tension in Ecuador is growing as they denounce that this is the result of a series of irregularities and a lack of supplies in the public health system. The situation in the country is very tense, starting with budget cuts, the lack of medicines and the dismissal of medical personnel.
08:17In fact, there are some things that we actually have to buy, and that are expensive medicines, and that worries us because we are people who do not have the necessary resources to be able to run to a pharmacy and buy things. This is in Cotopaxi, on the coast, in short, everywhere.
08:36Meanwhile, the agency for quality assurance of health services and prepaid medicine announced that it would initiate a quality audit and analysis of the cases to clarify the 12 deaths of newborns in Ecuador.

09:08The body of Colombian presidential hopeful and Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay licensed stayed at the Elliptical Hall of the Colombian Congress in Bogota.
09:29After being shot three times at a campaign rally on June 7, 2025, Uribe underwent multiple surgeries but succumbed to a fatal brain hemorrhage on August 11, 2025.
09:40Following his death, his body was transferred from the hospital and forensic services to the Congress, where it will remain in a public viewing chamber through the night,
09:49with an open opportunity for the public and lawmakers to pay respects before his funeral schedule for August 13.
09:55His wife, family members, and fellow politicians gathered at Congress to honor his memory during the solemn tribute.
10:06The 14-year-old accused of Uribe Turbay's murder, which accepted the charges during a private hearing on August 5,
10:12will be sentenced on August 27 by a Dutch specializing in children and adolescents.
10:17The prosecutor's office will request that the charge be changed from attempted murder to actual murder,
10:22which could lead to a sentence of up to eight years in a center for young offenders.
10:27The crime perpetrated at a campaign event in June has sparked political and social shock in Colombia.
10:32In Argentina, the governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kisiloff, announced and monded the launching of the completar plan,
10:47which seeks to resume the construction of thousands of houses halted by the government of President Javier Mele.
10:51Let's recall that since the change of national management, the building of more than 16,000 homes remains paralyzed,
10:57leaving them exposed to abandoned men, many of them with significant construction progress.
11:02A scenario that has been criticized by the Minister of Habitat of Buenos Aires, Silvina Batakis,
11:07who pointed out that in the middle of an ongoing housing crisis, it is cruel to forget these projects.
11:12The announcement comes amid controversy over the fate of some developments of the government program PROCREAD
11:17and the delivery of housing to police officials by the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich.
11:29And in Chile, workers of the public transport system denounce bad conditions and miserable wages
11:34and threaten a strike that could paralyze part of the public transport system in Santiago de Chile this week
11:39if no agreement is reached with the RBU company.
11:46It's 4 o'clock in the morning. A hard day begins. And it is not 1, it will be 2, because the salary is simply not enough.
11:57To earn money, it's 16 hours a day working. Many workers do 12 hours, and then go to another job, and continue doing hours.
12:04There are workers who come in at 4 o'clock or 5 o'clock a.m., and work until 2 o'clock or 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
12:09They eat quickly, go to other company and work until 11 p.m.
12:13Do you think we will be able to provide a good service that way?
12:16Difficult, and not only for them, but also for the thousands of users of public transportation, which in the country, of course, is also private.
12:27Here they get their money from the state. That's why we workers and passengers don't have to fight. We are passengers too. We also take the bus. So excuse me, but we also do all this to provide a good service.
12:41They are the workers of the Alliance Lafford Union, which brings together urban bus workers from the Rabu Santiago Company's mobility network, with close to 4,000 workers.
12:54Like this one, different companies win state tenders, and although they are different, they say, the conditions of the workers are all similar.
13:04The Ministry of Transportation endorsed that the company pays us unworthy salaries, that we have unworthy conditions, where workers have died en route.
13:15The days are exhausting, only 30 minutes for lunch, and as long as the trip has reached one of the terminals, where there is not always a bathroom.
13:26Most of the drivers end up getting sick. They have to walk around with a wimple, with a change of clothes they have improved with the little handkerchief that the women put on. Of course there are illnesses.
13:41If the strike goes ahead, eight districts of the Chilean capital will see transportation paralyzed on routes that connect Santiago from one end to the other, such as Parajul, near the airport, with Vitacura, in the eastern zone.
13:57Voting for the strike means that we have five more days to negotiate with the company, and we want to take advantage of those five days too. We want the company to make an offer that it has to make, which is obligatory, so let's not be afraid and let's vote for the strike.
14:13But the call has not been easy. To the poor conditions, they accuse persecution. The company agreed to negotiate before the possible strike, which the union will vote on electronically, exercising a valid right, they insist.
14:27Today the company has us with minimum wages, with unworthy wages. That is why we are fighting for fair wages, for fair conditions, for working hours in which we can share with our family. Today the company is denying that right.
14:46A business model that has been debated for decades in Chile. Can transportation be called public when it is actually private?
14:54The reality is private. Carolina Sandoval and Paola Dragnik, Tele Sur, Chile.
15:00In Shanghai, in China, the Shanghai Museum's gates are open for 168 hours straight from August 11th to the 17th, during the final week of its largest exhibition title, On Top of the Pridamate, the Civilization of China.
15:04Ancient Egypt.

15:17Hailed as the largest exhibition of ancient Egyptian artifacts ever held outside its home country, it represents a pioneering collaboration between an official Chinese museum and the Egyptian government, with nearly 95% of the 780 artifacts on display, making their debut in Asia.
15:32The installation has received almost 0.6 million visitors, with organizers deciding to keep the gates open for a full week to give more people a final chance to visit.

16:23Financial break, don't go away.
16:45Welcome back.
16:46The Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip have resulted in a Palestinian death of 61,499 and 153,575 injured since October 7, 2023, with 69 deaths and 362 injuries reported in the latest 24-hour period.
17:01Meanwhile, Israeli military operations in Jenin's refugee camp and city in the West Bank have been ongoing for over 203 days, causing extensive displacement and destruction.
17:11According to UN and humanitarian sources, nearly all of the approximately 20,000 residents of Jenin's refugee camp have been displaced,
17:18with estimated raising around 18,000 to more than 21,000 people forced to leave their homes due to continued military actions.
17:25Over 600 homes have been destroyed, along with severe damage to infrastructure including roads, water, sewage, and telecommunications.
17:32On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for the proposal to grant asylum to Palestinian children orphaned by the genocide in Gaza.
17:48The President described the initiative as positive and recalled that Mexico has maintained throughout its history an open-door policy for those seeking refuge.
17:57To assess the viability of this measure, she instructed the Secretary of Interior Rosa Isela Rodriguez and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to review all the legal,
18:07logistical, and humanitarian aspects that will be involved in receiving and caring for these children.
18:12And in Panama, the mayor's office of the capital will this month evict informal vendor stations and metro stations by delivering another blow to those who live on a daily basis and aggravating the subsistence crisis in the country.
18:31From Panama City, our colleague Rekha Chandiramani with the details.
18:38Negrita is 15 years old as an informal vendor, but her story is not one of celebration at the age of 12 she took to the streets to survive.
18:47And today, from her modest stall of natural herbs in the 5 de Mayo Square in the heart of the canal capital, she supports her young children.
18:55However, her livelihood hangs in the balance just a few steps away in the subway station that bears the same name as the plaza.
19:03The mayor's office is moving forward with an eviction that will leave the future of at least 50 families who make a living from street vending in the surrounding area up in the air.
19:13I say that they should not remove people who have these positions like me. Because you are not here because you want to be.
19:22And this is our daily sustenance, if we had a job we wouldn't be here.
19:28We are clear that this part belongs to the train, and that they have to have some, as I said, some parameters so that if the train has an emergency,
19:40God forbid, they have to have the exit and evacuate the people, but if you focus on the front, we have enough space so that the ambulances can enter and exit.
19:51The mayor's office has offered to relocate them to a building adjacent to the station, but, according to the vendors, this building does not meet the minimum conditions for them to continue their activity.
20:04We want another dialogue, because, after we found out, the papers are not up to date. The National Civil Protection System and the Fire Department are not giving permission for that building, but they don't care. The building is here in front of the subway, it's not even painted. It has no parameters for a human being.
20:23The authority of micro, small and medium enterprises estimates that more than 700,000 Panamanians live from informal commerce in the country.
20:35These evictions could aggravate the situation of these families if replicated in other parts of the capital.
20:41How are informal vendors born? How is the informal economy born? From unemployment, from the lack of attention, the lack of vacancies there, and that may arise.
20:53If they evict us from here, what do you expect? I'm going to be evicted from where I live, right? Because I won't have enough to pay my rent. I want them to put us in a good place if they don't want us here, right?
21:12I ask the mayor to touch his heart, that those 8 months they want to give us to relocate us later, those 8 months, what are we going to do with our bellies? How are we going to eat? How are we going to survive?
21:25How are we going to survive?
21:28Let's hope that this government will help informal vendors, and not just remove them just like that. If they are going to remove them, they should have something specific to put them in.
21:39One is working honestly. If one has to pay taxes, one pays them. Let them say, because what will they be left with?
21:53In Panama, informal vendors represent 12% of the labor force, according to official figures. 6 out of 10 are women, many of them heads of household, and 95% lack social security.
22:07Although this informal trade is vital for thousands of families, the reordering operation have affected at least 8,000 households between 2020 and 2024, according to reports from the Ombudsman's Office.
