00:45Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:46I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Dresos Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:50We begin with the news.
00:52The world has raised its voice in support of the people and government of Venezuela and
01:08rejects the new operations of the U.S. executive.
01:10In the South American region, governments and social movements from Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia,
01:15Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic, as well as local authorities and
01:20governments expressed their support for the constitutional president of the Bolivarian
01:23nation, Nicolás Maduro, after the declarations of the United States Attorney General, Pamela
01:28Ponte.
01:29Central America also expressed its support from El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala,
01:34and Nicaragua.
01:35They rejected the instrumentalization of the U.S. legal system against a free and sovereign
01:40nation.
01:41For the North, governments and grassroots organizations in Mexico and the United States reported the
01:45Venezuelan head of state and rejected the false accusations against him.
01:49The rejection of the lawfare attempt against Venezuela and its authorities echoed in parallel
01:54in Europe, Asia, and Africa, with France, Iran, and Egypt sending strong support to the Bolivarian
02:00nation.
02:01And in this context, Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro expressed his quietude for the support
02:15received from sovereign peoples around the world.
02:17The Venezuelan president expressed his quietude for the mobilization of the military and popular
02:21forces and for the support of society in general in defense of peace and sovereignty at this crucial
02:27time for the country.
02:28Furthermore, the head of state denounced the United States' attempts to impose violent hegemony
02:34on the world's emerging economies.
02:44And in Venezuela, Foreign Minister Ivan Hill met with the diplomatic corps created in the
02:48country in order to put into proper perspective the latest U.S. threats against Venezuela.
02:53The Venezuelan foreign minister emphasized that since March 2015, the Venezuelan state has been
02:57the victim of all forms of attack, which began with former President Obama's executive order
03:02declaring Venezuela an unusual and extraordinary threat.
03:05Hill added that in the last ten years, Venezuela has experienced inhumane attacks against its
03:09sovereignty, sabotage of the oil industry, attacks on the production of goods and services,
03:14the national currency and all forms of economic assault.
03:24The body of the Colombian presidential hopeful and Senator Miguel Uribe toured by a license state
03:29at the elliptical hall of the Colombian Congress in Bogota.
03:32After being shot three times at a campaign rally on June 7, 2025, Uribe underwent multiple surgeries
03:38but succumbed to a fatal brain hemorrhage on August 11, 2025.
03:44Following his death, his body was transferred from the hospital and Forensic Services to the Congress,
03:49where it will remain in a public viewing chamber through the night, with an open opportunity
03:54for the public and lawmakers to pay respects before his funeral schedule for August 13.
03:59His wife, family, members and fellow politicians gathered at Congress to honor his memory.
04:05And the 14-year-old accused of Uribe to revise murder, which accepted the charges during a private
04:19year on August 5, will be sentenced on August 27 by a judge specializing in children and adolescents.
04:26The prosecutor's office will request that the charge be changed from attempted murder to actual
04:30murder, which could lead to a sentence of up to eight years in a center for young offenders.
04:36The crime, perpetrated at a campaign event in June, has sparked political and social shock in Colombia.
04:50And the Colombian attorney general's office requested the Bogota Superior Court to overturn the 12-year
04:55house arrest sentence against former President Álvaro Uribe, alleging missteps in the
05:00assessment of evidence.
05:01The attorney general's office maintains that it is not proven that Uribe ordered lawyer
05:06Diego Cadena to offer incentives to prisoners in 2018 to clear him of the creation of a
05:12paramilitary group.
05:13In addition, it questions the validity of the telephone recordings used as evidence.
05:18The case, considered one of the most important in the judicial history of the country, will
05:22now be reviewed by three judges from the criminal chamber who must decide whether to confirm,
05:27modify, or overturn the sentence.

05:40Welcome back.
05:41China and Brazil reaffirmed their willingness to set an example of unity and self-reliance
05:55among countries in the Global South.
05:57Chinese President Xi Jinping urged countries in the Global South to jointly safeguard international
06:02equity and justice and to protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.
06:07During a phone call, Brazilian President Lula da Selva and his counterpart President Xi declared
06:13that they would jointly build a more just and sustainable planet.
06:16The Brazilian President affirmed his willingness to strengthen communication and coordination
06:20with China on the multilateral mechanisms such as BRICS, opposing Washington's unilateral
06:26aggressive actions.
06:27And in Argentina, the governor of the province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kisilof, announced on Monday
06:32the launching of the Complete Art Plan, which seeks to resume the construction of thousands
06:36of houses halted by the government of President Javier Mele.
06:39Let's recall that since the change of national management, the building of more than 16,000
06:44homes remains paralyzed, leaving them exposed to abandonment, many of them with significant
06:50construction progress.
06:51A scenario that has been criticized by the Minister of Habitat of Buenos Aires, Silvina Batakis,
06:56who pointed out that in the middle of an ongoing housing crisis, it is cruel to forget these
07:02projects.
07:03The announcement comes amid controversy over the state of some developments of the
07:07government program Procreate and the delivery of housing to police officials by the Minister
07:12of Security, Patricia Bullrich.
07:14And in Chile, workers of the public transport system denounce bad conditions and miserable
07:19wages and threaten a strike that could paralyze part of the public transport system in Santiago
07:25de Chile this week if no agreement is reached with the RPU company.
07:29It's 4 o'clock in the morning, a hard day begins.
07:37And it is not one, it will be two, because the salary is simply not enough.
07:44To earn money, it's 16 hours a day working.
07:47Many workers do 12 hours, and then go to another job, and continue doing hours.
07:51There are workers who come in at 4 o'clock or 5 o'clock am, and work until 2 o'clock or 3 o'clock
07:56in the afternoon.
07:57They eat quickly, go to other company and work until 11 p.m.
08:00Do you think we will be able to provide a good service that way?
08:03Difficult, and not only for them, but also for the thousands of users of public transportation,
08:12which in the country, of course, is also private.
08:15Here they get their money from the state.
08:19That's why we workers and passengers don't have to fight, we are passengers too.
08:23We also take the bus.
08:25So excuse me, but we also do all this to provide a good service.
08:30They are the workers of the Alliance Lafford Union, which brings together urban bus workers
08:37from the RPU Santiago Company's mobility network with close to 4,000 workers.
08:44Like this one, different companies win state tenders, and although they are different, they
08:49say, the conditions of the workers are all similar.
08:51The Ministry of Transportation endorsed that the company pays us unworthy salaries, that
08:59we have unworthy conditions, where workers have died en route.
09:03The days are exhausting, only 30 minutes for lunch, and as long as the trip has reached
09:10one of the terminals, where there is not always a bathroom.
09:14Most of the drivers end up getting sick.
09:21They have to walk around with a wimple.
09:23With a change of clothes they have improved with the little handkerchief that the women
09:26put on.
09:27Of course there are illnesses.
09:29The strike goes ahead, eight districts of the Chilean capital will see transportation
09:37paralyzed on routes that connect Santiago from one end to the other, such as Parajul,
09:41near the airport, with Vitacura, in the eastern zone.
09:44Voting for the strike means that we have five more days to negotiate with the company,
09:50and we want to take advantage of those five days too.
09:53We want the company to make an offer that it has to make, which is obligatory, so let's
09:56not be afraid and let's vote for the strike.
10:02But the call has not been easy.
10:04To the poor conditions, they accuse persecution.
10:07The company agreed to negotiate before the possible strike, which the union will vote
10:11on electronically, exercising a valid right, they insist.
10:17Today the company has us with minimum wages, with unworthy wages.
10:21That is why we are fighting for fair wages, for fair conditions, for working hours in which
10:26we can share with our family.
10:28Today the company is denying that right.
10:30A business model that has been debated for decades in Chile.
10:38Can transportation be called public when it is actually private?
10:41Realidad es privado. Carolina Sandoval y Paola Dragnik, Tele Sur, Chile.
10:48In Mexico, the Secretariat for Integrated Risk Management and Civil Protection issued a double-following
11:05steady rainfall in the capital city over the past 72 hours.
11:09Mexico City faces an unprecedented crisis due to heavy rains that have broken historical records.
11:14The storms have triggered flooding in several streets and avenues leading to the collapse
11:18of public and vehicle transportation.
11:20Likewise, operations at the city's international airport have been halted, leaving thousands of
11:25passengers stranded.
11:27Well, for this ratio, 84.5 millimeters of accumulated rain, overcoming the 1952 record of 67 millimeters.
11:37The local government's Water Management Secretary, José Mario Esparza, warned that the city
11:41is put halfway into the rainy season.
11:44We now have our second break coming up.

12:07Welcome back.
12:12Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have resulted in a Palestinian death full of 61,499 and 153,575 injured since October 7th.
12:36October 7th, 2023, with 69 deaths and 362 injuries reported in the latest 24-hour period.
12:43Meanwhile, Israeli military operations in Jenin Refugee Camp and the city in the West Bank have been
12:48ongoing for over 203 days, causing extensive displacement and destruction.
12:54According to UN and humanitarian sources, nearly all of the approximately 20,000 residents of the Jenin Refugee Camp have been displaced,
13:01with estimated ranging around 18,000 to more than 21,000 people forced to leave their homes due to continued military actions.
13:09Over 600 homes have been destroyed, along with severe damage to infrastructure including roads, water, sewage and telecommunications.
13:17On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for the proposal to grant asylum to Palestinian children
13:32orphaned by the genocide in Gaza.
13:34The President described the initiative as positive and recalled that Mexico has maintained throughout its history
13:41an open-door policy for those seeking refuge.
13:44To assess the viability of this measure, she instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Isela Rodriguez,
13:49and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to review all the legal, logistical and humanitarian aspects
13:54that would be involved in receiving and caring for these children.
14:03The Iranian President Massoud Paiseskian warned Caucasus countries about the risk of the United States
14:09using the new transport corridor in the region as a tool to impose its hegemonic interests
14:14under the guise of promoting peace or boosting the economy.
14:17In a telephone conversation with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan,
14:21the Iranian leader emphasized that the project must guarantee Armenia's sovereignty
14:25and exclude any foreign military presence.
14:27Paiseskian reiterated that Iran, as a harbor of peace and stability,
14:32supports any genuine agreement that promotes cooperation among regional countries
14:36but opposes any maneuver that alters borders or serves to isolate Iran and Russia
14:41in a context marked by the recent peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan
14:45conciliated by Washington.
14:48And in Peru, outrage grows following journalist and migrant Ricardo Quintana's case,
14:58currently detained in the Alligator Alcatraz prison in Florida.
15:02On the Cuarto Poder program, Quintana reported that he lives in inhumane conditions,
15:09crowded with thousands of people, fed frozen food and subjected to long hours,
15:13handcuffed and chained to the floor.
15:15The journalist, who arrived in the United States in 2021 seeking political asylum,
15:19claims that he never committed any crimes and that his only offense was selling ceviche without a permit.
15:25His testimony has sparked an intense debate about the mistreatment of migrants in the United States.
15:39And in Haiti, the health situation in the regions of Port-au-Prince and Leoghan
15:43has reached a critical point affecting thousands of people seeking refuge from armed violence.
15:48A recent study by Haiti's medical organization and the Final Point movement
15:52revealed that 98% of residents suffer from scabies and 85% of children between the ages of one and six
15:59suffer from dysentery, a form of intestinal infection due to polluted water.
16:05In addition, 80% of these children are affected by malnutrition.
16:08The health crisis is also worsening with cholera.
16:11The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the World Health Organization
16:14detected 34 new cases in recent weeks.
16:17The situation underlines the urgent need for clean water and sanitation for thousands of families surviving in precarious conditions.
16:30In Panama, the mayor's office of the capital will this month evict informal vendors stationed at metro stations
16:36who died delivering another road to those who live on a daily basis and aggravating the subsistence crisis in the country.
16:44From Panama City, our colleague Reca Chandiramani with the details.
16:49Negrita is 15 years old as an informal vendor, but her story is not one of celebration at the age of 12 she took to the streets to survive.
17:00And today, from her modest stall of natural herbs in the 5 de Mayo Square in the heart of the Canal capital, she supports her young children.
17:08However, her livelihood hangs in the balance just a few steps away in the subway station that bears the same name as the plaza.
17:16The mayor's office is moving forward with an eviction that will leave the future of at least 50 families who make a living from street vending in the surrounding area up in the air.
17:25I say that they should not remove people who have these positions like me. Because you are not here because you want to be.
17:35And this is our daily sustenance, if we had a job we wouldn't be here.
17:42We are clear that this part belongs to the train, and that they have to have some, as I said, some parameters so that if the train has an emergency.
17:54God forbid, they have to have the exit and evacuate the people, but if you focus on the front, we have enough space so that the ambulances can enter and exit.
18:06The mayor's office has offered to relocate them to a building adjacent to the station, but, according to the vendors, this building does not meet the minimum conditions for them to continue their activity.
18:17We want another dialogue, because after we found out, the papers are not up to date. The National Civil Protection System and the Fire Department are not giving permission for that building, but they don't care. The building is here in front of the subway, it's not even painted. It has no parameters for a human being.
18:36The authority of micro, small and medium enterprises estimates that more than 700,000 Panamanians live from informal commerce in the country.
18:48These evictions could aggravate the situation of these families if replicated in other parts of the capital.
18:55How are informal vendors born? How is the informal economy born? From unemployment, from the lack of attention, the lack of vacancies there, and that may arise.
19:06If they evict us from here, what do you expect? I am going to be evicted from where I live, right? Because I won't have enough to pay my rent. I want them to put us in a good place if they don't want us here, right?
19:22I ask the mayor to touch his heart, that those eight months they want to give us to relocate us later. Those eight months, what are we going to do with our bellies? How are we going to eat? How are we going to survive?
19:38How are we going to survive? Let's hope that this government will help informal vendors, and not just remove them just like that. If they are going to remove them, they should have something specific to put them in.
19:56One is working honestly. If one has to pay taxes, one pays them. Let them say, because what will they be left with?
20:03In Panama, informal vendors represent 12% of the labor force, according to official figures. Six out of ten are women, many of them heads of household, and 95% lack social security. Although this informal trade is vital for thousands of families, the reordering operations have affected at least 8,000 households between 2020 and 2024, according to reports from the Ombudsman's Office.
