00:00Welcome back.
00:02Cubans celebrated Fidel Castro's centenary with national and international delegations coming together
00:06to honor the legacy of the revolutionary leader and its relevance in today's role.
00:11Our correspondent, Melinda Los Santos, has more details.
00:15The past days had all been leading up to this moment.
00:18August 13th marked the 100th birthday anniversary of Fidel Castro,
00:23the man that from Latin America revolutionized politics for the global south.
00:28There is probably no figure that represents revolutionary politics, at least in our hemisphere, so fully as Fidel.
00:34And I think it expresses this emancipatory project of national liberation, the project of socialism, very fully.
00:43I think the way we can honor Fidel is carrying that forward.
00:46The iconic Karl Marx Theater in Havana was packed, the same from where Fidel himself many times spoke to his
00:54people.
00:54With the presence of Army General Raul Castro and the President Miguel DÃaz-Canel,
00:59a moving theater piece honored Fidel's vision for a new society.
01:04What was really shown on stage and what we were able to witness today, particularly coming from the United States,
01:09was a people who are proud not only of their own revolutionary culture,
01:14not only of the legacy and the life and the history of Fidel, but also what that has given to
01:19humanity.
01:19On stage, the kids' theater company, La Colmenita, moved many to tears, honoring Fidel's legacy.
01:26Little by little, the piece brought to stage Cuban sports stars, scientists, heroes.
01:31It wasn't fiction, but a real-life representation of that society that Fidel fought for and built.
01:43So happy of being surrounded by sports stars, by doctors who have given so much to this country,
01:51by kids who are the future of this country.
01:56As the centenary focuses not only in the past, but in the challenges ahead,
02:01the role of the younger generations was key.
02:04As well, it was wonderful to see the young people up there
02:07and them speaking about how they are carrying forward Fidel's legacy
02:11and the legacy of the Cuban revolution.
02:13Both local and international visitors highlighted the teachings of Fidel
02:17and their relevance today.
02:19Part of Fidel's genius was to overcome differences, build unity,
02:23which is a task that's very important in the current moment.
02:26Legacy and future intertwine, as the memory of Fidel remains very much alive
02:31in those ready to continue his struggle for a more fairer humanity across the world.
