In celebration of World Steelpan Day, Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra took the magic of our national instrument all the way to Times Square, New York, over the weekend.

The event; "Pan in Times Square" drew hundreds, creating an unforgettable showcase of culture in the heart of the Big Apple.

00:29to one of the busiest intersections in the world, the sweet sounds of the steel pan ran out through Times Square on Sunday.
00:38The performance by Trinidad All-Stars marked the third staging of pan in Times Square
00:43and formed a part of celebrations for World Steel Pan Day, officially observed on August 11.
00:50In videos circulating on social media, hunters of West Indians gathered proudly,
00:55waving red, white and black flags and celebrating the rich rhythms of our national instrument.
01:01For many living abroad, this day carries deep emotional meaning, a reminder of home, heritage and cultural pride.
01:09Speaking to TV6 via telephone, National Carnival Commission Chairman Peter Kanhai praised the event's success
01:16but stressed that more needs to be done to grow the steel pan industry to its full potential.
01:21I don't think enough of the corporate world is getting involved and partnering with the steel pan fraternity
01:30to move the thing along.
01:31When you have steel pan events, it is well attended if there is no entry fee.
01:43It is very well attended.
01:46But if you have to put a fee for some of these events and so on,
01:54you may find that attendance.
01:55In July of 2024, history was made in the House of Representatives
02:02when members of the government and opposition unanimously passed the bill
02:06designating the steel pan as the official national instrument of TNT.
