Transcript
00:00Sixty-five pieces from 47 local artists are currently on display and will be featured
00:12at a rotunda of the Red House until August 16, Mondays to Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
00:19Ten of the artists are under the age of 18, with the youngest being 8 years old.
00:24Percussion, The Sounds of Steelpan, is said to be the first art exhibition at a rotunda,
00:29which focuses solely on the steelpan.
00:32Speaker of the House of Representatives Bridgette Anisette George used Calypso icon Lord Kitchener's
00:37lyrics to delve into the journey of the steelpan.
00:40Up came the professor, beat pan, to add to the fire, beat pan.
00:45I call in on Bradley, beat pan, to challenge Beverly.
00:50But I want to say this.
00:52Reflecting on the story of pan, it has never been a minor achievement.
00:59She says, having been the only new musical instrument invented in the 20th century, the
01:05steelpan, TNT's national instrument, has been embraced across the world.
01:10Anisette George notes that several people were involved in the evolution of the instrument
01:14and she calls for their legacy to be remembered.
01:18And creativity has not yet been exhausted.
01:21With the steelpan, as I've read, recently, the digital G-pan will be on the horizon.
01:31The story of pan is steeped in resilience, innovation, ritual, rebellion, and cultural
01:39pride.
01:41She says the steelpan is also a representation of sustainability, having been made from recycled
01:46waste and an integral part of the education and economic landscapes.
01:52One of the young artists, Isabella Mohammed Birjulal Singh, crafted a piece called The
01:56Evolution of Pan.
01:57And for this piece, I used acrylic on canvas, plastic bottle caps, bamboo, and metal.
01:58This art piece symbolizes the transition from the bamboo to the steelpan.
01:59I got this inspiration from my home, the beautiful borough of Point Forten, also known as the
02:19home of the Tornado Steelpan Orchestra.
02:23Among those visiting the exhibition, Dent, a social group from Aruka focused on teens.
02:29Artist founder Deidre Williams says it was a nice, hands-on experience for the children.
02:34We just arrived at the Red House, and a number of them have never been to the Red House,
02:39so this was actually really good.
02:42It was past our expectations already, and I know that the balance of the tour is going
02:46to continue being great.
