00:00E ready to race. Gates down.
00:07Corado vs. Hunter Lawrence out of the gates.
00:10It's that Pat Turell right there in the Suzuki.
00:13No, but it's one of the Yamahas, Eli Tomac, to the lead.
00:15Eli Tomac out front.
00:17Jett Lawrence got a horrible start.
00:19He was back there behind Chase Jackson.
00:20I'm not sure what happened to those guys, but a horrible start for him.
00:23But Eli Tomac, Captain America out front.
00:26First hole shot of the year for the legend here.
00:29The four-time Pro Motocross champion Tomac, Lawrence.
00:35Hunter has been able to snake his way up to second.
00:39As for Jett, give me a look at the rare bad start for the 18.
00:45Yeah, Eli, see what happens to Jett right here.
00:50Oh, he went early.
00:51Yeah, see, I knew something happened.
00:53One got flinched, and he went, and that's rare.
00:56I normally don't see Jett make that mistake, but he showed you.
00:58Oh, he was the one that went.
01:00Okay.
01:02All right, hey, nobody's perfect.
01:04So the guy who's been the master of the starts this year, that Lawrence is, by the way,
01:08have 11 of 16 hole shots coming into this.
01:11Now make it 11 of 17, but Tomac getting one.
01:14And the ET3 is on the gas.
01:16Yeah, well, Jett's going to change that average to 3.8.
01:19It might drop back a little bit more, but he's already moved.
01:22Well, he's behind Chase Sexton.
01:23Chase is in eighth, but Eli Tomac, we saw how that first lap went for Joe Shimoda.
01:29Because the way this track is, I think he'll be able to get a gap on these guys.
01:32Hunter Lawrence trying to stay close to him.
01:34Man, this thing's getting deep.
01:35Yeah, you love to see it, and these fans do as well.
01:41Tomac leads it.
01:43Patrick Routh in third place.
01:45Yeah, that's a good start there on the Suzuki.
01:47A couple other riders watched.
01:48Cody's shotgun at 37.
01:49He is the one battling with Chase Sexton.
01:51I think that's Justin Cooper right in front of them.
01:54Oh, you see that bike swap in.
01:56Oh, and Chase.
01:56Oh, Chase!
01:58Couldn't hold it up.
01:59Tucks the front, goes down.
02:01Lost about five spots.
02:02Oh, that was about as good as it could have gone for as bad as it was.
02:10Go down on the first lap.
02:12Yeah, I was looking at where Jet was.
02:14I wasn't sure if he's passed.
02:16Jet's about 10 positions behind Chase, so I'm not sure if Jet went down again.
02:20Yeah, he had a 23rd at one point.
02:23Jet Lawrence, championship leader.
02:25So it's all going in the direction of Tomac and Hunter Lawrence right now.
02:29Justin Cooper, third, shot fourth.
02:31Welcome back to racing.
02:32Dylan Ferrandez battling with Hampshire here.
02:35First pro motocross of the year for the 2021 champ on the red Phoenix Honda.
02:41Yeah, we've seen RJ then get better as this season.
02:44He wants to get that podium, overall podium.
02:46I like today for RJ for some reason.
02:49His track's going to be super tough.
02:51He's got Cody Shocker right in front of him.
02:52So if he can get up there, get a gap with Chase going down and jetting him back, he might have an opportunity.
02:58Carandos was scheduled to come back from injury at Unadilla next week, but he said he rode for four weeks and felt so good and said, let's get started early.
03:08Ok, bottom box, it's Lawrence, he's got the orange numbers on the red gear, battling, let's see here, 21st place, wow.
03:19Yeah, he's right behind my brother now, so JT.
03:24Well, we've been joking around about Honda HRC manager Lawrence Lynch having a button because their starts are so good that he's manually doing it.
03:31He may need a horn because look at the traffic that is around him to try to just alert him that the points leader is coming through.
03:38This is not what he needs because he's simply not going to be able to turn in quick lap time to the likes of Sexton, especially Eli Tomac.
03:45They're going to build a very big lead very, very quickly here.
03:48I feel like the button theory has been disproved with help from you, JT.
03:53Yeah, the rider has got to do the work and unfortunately, Jeff flinched on the gate and he's got a lot of work to do now.
03:58Yeah, you know, you can blame Steve Maxis for that. He jumped on the bike. Now look at him. He's all the way back here.
04:03So, yep, the streak's over.
04:05Yeah, but normally, you know, when you got a guy like Jett this far back, the gap between him and Eli is a lot bigger than what it is.
04:12It's still pretty close. So, you know, he's only 10 seconds at the moment, 10, 12 seconds out of third place with Justin Cooper.
04:20So, it's not too far behind. He didn't lose too much time, but it's going to be a long race for him.
04:25Got Hampshire at that top box battling it out with shock.
04:28Four. That is fourth. Cooper is all alone in third. And Tomac has about a two-second lead on Hunter Lawrence.
04:36So, this is a great opportunity for those two.
04:39Nice move by Jett up the inside. Try to get these guys in bunches.
04:44What's that, RJ working on Cody shock?
04:48Like this new section. You can see all these different lines. Guys going down the inside, down the middle.
04:53And what's tricky about this section, it continuously turns. These guys are getting really close to that tree right there with that big hay belt.
05:01So, they're trying to pick up the pace, but they've got to continue to turn.
05:03At 13th place position for Lawrence.
05:11He's battling soon with his team, Australian teammate for motocross, the nation's Kyle Webster is here.
05:16Quadlock Honda team bringing the Australian motocross champ here for the afternoon.
05:20A bunch of teammates in other divisions. Brody Connelly just raced the 250 class today.
05:26He's the 250 champ in Australia.
05:29Or it's on the move.
05:32Shock battling it out with Hemp Shiner there for fourth, Katie.
05:36Yeah, and he's not entirely comfortable on the bike.
05:38The number 37 of Cody shock is dealing with a left ankle issue for him with Washougal.
05:43So, he did have a lot of work done on that in terms of just rest, relaxation, make sure it's working properly here at Ironman.
05:50He said he was a little bit concerned, though, on a track like this.
05:53There's going to be a lot of work with that right leg.
05:54So, that foot's going to be dragging a bit.
05:57It's going to be a physical game as well as a mental game.
05:59I asked him, I said, hey, look, does an injury like this kind of nagging you in a race mode?
06:03He said, yeah.
06:03He said, so not only physically am I thinking about it, but mentally I have to make sure I don't overdo it so I hurt myself more.
06:09Yeah, but sometimes when you're in that position, you find some good lines.
06:13And I'm looking at Cody.
06:15He has a really good line in that wood section.
06:16So, he might not be charging super hard down in certain sections like going up this phase.
06:21But he's got these lines figured out.
06:22Probably a lot of that because of his injury, got to be patient.
06:26Now, he's got the number one coming up behind him as RJ continues to work on him.
06:31Yeah, I just saw Sexton make the move on Prado on the inside, headed toward the finish.
06:35That was a critical pass.
06:37Now, he has bridged the gap to the Shock-Hampshire battle.
06:41And then Lawrence is lurking not too far back.
06:44You've got Prado, Ferrandez, and then Jet.
06:46So, you might see Sexton and Jet moving together.
06:50And it looks like RJ has made the pass now.
06:52Yeah, but any kind of injury, that's the place that Cody's probably going to be a little bit more patient at, not really trying to charge it in there.
06:58But here, the last lap, he had a really good line.
07:01Let's see if he can close back, maybe even get around RJ's next section, if he can be able to run the same line.
07:06Oh, it's working.
07:07It's alongside.
07:09He's got to deal with Sexton now.
07:12And Sexton makes the pass.
07:14Yeah, Cody let him have that.
07:16So, I like that line by Chase.
07:18He probably saw Cody do it the lap before.
07:24And the very back of the shot, you see Jet Lawrence back there.
07:27Yeah, they're on the same straightaway.
07:28So, Jet, as bad as that start is, I think Chase going down helped that.
07:33Chase is going to be bummed because I think he should be up there with these guys.
07:36But nonetheless, Jet's still only 18 seconds behind Eli.
07:39And again, how far he was back.
07:40That gap's been the same since about the second lap.
07:43Hunter taking the fight to Eli Tomek now up front.
07:48JT.
07:50Well, I see Hunter Lawrence.
07:51And, you know, we go back to Washougal, and he simply just didn't look like himself.
07:55And there were a lot of questions asked.
07:57You know, Chase Sexton gets the win.
07:59Hunter was a little off his game as we see him make a mistake there.
08:01But I really think we have to kind of chalk that up to Washougal
08:04and the nuances of these particular racetracks.
08:07That's a racetrack that we heard Jet Lawrence himself say,
08:09hey, this just isn't my track.
08:10And I think Hunter would echo those sentiments.
08:12He really hasn't ever shined there.
08:15It's a track that, if you're not comfortable, does not reward taking a lot of risks.
08:18So I think they took what was available and are coming back with a vengeance here in Ironman.
08:23As Hunter looks like, he might want to challenge for this week right here.
08:25Yeah, I agree with you, JT.
08:28And a lot of people thought the same thing coming to this track
08:30because he hasn't, you know, performed the best here.
08:32But the way this layout is and these soils,
08:35and we saw him almost make that mistake as you were talking,
08:37I think this track, just as Jet, it's going to play into the hand of these guys
08:41like a Hunter Lawrence.
08:43Really patient.
08:45Katie?
08:46Talking with Johnny O'Mara, what makes Hunter Lawrence so great?
08:49He said he's a diesel.
08:50That's kind of the nickname around here for him.
08:52He always shows up.
08:54He never gives up.
08:55I also asked Lars Lindstrom, team manager over there at Honda, why?
08:59Why is he so consistent?
09:00And he said, well, having someone like Jet at that level train with him at all times
09:04helps with his consistency.
09:06The testing they do helps with Hunter Lawrence's consistency.
09:10And he's a guy that knows how to adjust on the bike while on a track.
09:15And for all those reasons, that's why a guy like Hunter Lawrence is so consistent
09:19with all of his top fives.
09:20Yeah, Katie, he's finished in the top five every single 450 motocross race he's been in.
09:26It's his second full season.
09:28Yeah, even the bags for him are usually horse.
09:31That's about it.
09:32Yeah, I mean, when you look at Hunter Lawrence, Chase Exxon got on a roll last year.
09:37Otherwise, he would have been your champion.
09:39This year, his brother, he would be leading his point.
09:41So he's riding good, JT.
09:43He certainly is.
09:44And you see Jet on the bottom screen continuing to work forward.
09:47But, you know, I think on to what Katie said there.
09:50You know, Hunter's a guy, he always talks about process first.
09:53The result will come later.
09:55I'm not even focused on the result.
09:56I only care about the process.
09:59And if that's in place, the rest will take care of itself.
10:01And you just have to do that.
10:03You have to believe that if I do the right things and I put one foot in front of the other, that I will get to where I need to be.
10:09And I haven't seen many racers ever that are as methodical in the way they go about things as Hunter Lawrence.
10:15Well, you'll learn a lot when you were hurt as much as he was earlier in his career.
10:18And he said, maybe I wanted it too bad back then.
10:20And he took several years of that to get to this level to where now he is challenging one of the best, Eli Tomek, and going for the lead.
10:29That's a perfect scenario on how this track is playing out.
10:31That was just a better line from Hunter.
10:33Hunter didn't do anything different as Jet Lawrence now hits this big jump, gets around Jorge Prada for sixth place.
10:40He was your fastest rider on the track with a 205 in the last lap.
10:43Hunter Lawrence was second.
10:45But again, that was just a line selection.
10:47Hunter didn't charge any harder.
10:49Eli's going to have to go to work like we saw Hayden Deegan and regroup because Hunter has better lines at the moment.
10:54Jet and Hunter literally make passes at the exact same time.
10:58They're always in sync.
11:00They're always in sync.
11:01So that's the lead now for the 96.
11:04Hunter trying to put this one away and started to pull out from Tomek.
11:09As for Jet, there's going to be a significant obstacle in his run to the front.
11:13And that is Sexton, who would be the next one in front of him.
11:15But it's five seconds ahead.
11:19Yeah, these guys are going to have to worry.
11:20I mean, Hunter Lawrence knows if you're going to get Eli, Eli's always going to be strong.
11:24But if you can get that gap on him, make him start thinking behind, thinking about his teammate, thinking about Chase Sexton and Jet Lawrence coming up, not worried about me.
11:31Hunter might have an opportunity to get away.
11:33You go back a couple of races.
11:34Because he did the same thing at Millville, that first moto, winning it in the same fashion.
11:40So Hunter has that experience.
11:41And so far, he looks really good.
11:44Yeah, only one moto win this year for Hunter.
11:46And that was that race at Millville.
11:48That might have been his best of the year.
11:50Then Washougal, like we said, that's not his track.
11:52He's back in a big way today.
11:54As for Jet, still five seconds down on Sexton as Sexton tries to go after Hebshire.
12:01Yeah, that section is getting really slippery.
12:04But I do believe because Jet got a bad start as we're watching RJ close in on Justin Cooper for third place, Jet probably has the best advantage of all these guys because he had to figure out a way to pass all of them, all the riders before he got to them.
12:17So he probably has his track figured out more than the rest of these guys.
12:19And so far, it's turning into fast lap times.
12:23Oh, he's about to challenge Sexton now.
12:25He's closed the gap and has him in his sights.
12:30Now, normally when you're in his position, Jet probably took a lot of risk trying to catch up to these guys.
12:35Now he'll probably settle back, calm down.
12:38I'm sure in the back of his mind, he doesn't probably believe he's going to get his brother out front.
12:42That's a pretty big gap.
12:43But now you got Chase Sexton in front of you.
12:45Just start working on those lap times might slow down a little bit.
12:49And as I say that, he goes faster, 204.
12:53Thanks, Jet.
12:54Maybe the next time around.
12:55Let's see this lap.
12:56The track's just breaking in.
12:58That's what that really was.
12:58Okay, all right.
12:59Calm it down.
13:00But third place is right in front of him.
13:02So everything's right in front of him.
13:03The main thing is to try to stack those points, but maybe have an opportunity to get the next overall is second moto, JT.
13:09Yeah, and you see Jet turning into 204.
13:12And his best friend right now is going to be Justin Cooper.
13:14Justin Cooper did a 208 that last lap, which is going to slow up RJ Hampshire, which is going to slow up Chase Sexton and allow Jet Lawrence to make this a four-way battle for third very, very soon.
13:26So we don't know necessarily if he can get up to second, but I think he's going to be in a fight for third within the next lap or two.
13:33Yeah.
13:33That was the fastest lap of the race that Jet just put in James.
13:36Yeah, and depending on what Hunter Lawrence does out front, he might have an opportunity to get second because Eli is going to eventually stop chasing Hunter.
13:45He's going to start working behind him, and that would be a good thing for Jet Lawrence.
13:48So brothers working in sync again.
13:51They are, and we know they've got the whole squad behind them, Katie.
13:56Yeah, that's right.
13:57And you know, one of the things we've talked about here, guys, this weekend is what these riders are battling on the track with the elements and the condition of the weather.
14:03I talked to Johnny O'Meara about how challenging this is for these riders, and I wanted to understand as a normal human here what kind of athleticism these riders need to have.
14:14Well, he told me that Jet Lawrence can maintain about 190 heartbeats per minute in a race like this, right?
14:22So mid-moto, he's running at 190.
14:24He said he's generally about 7 to 8 feet per minute higher than Hunter is at any given time.
14:29That doesn't indicate he's more physically fit than Hunter or not, but it just shows just how demanding this sport is to maintain 190 beats per minute throughout a moto, and also at the same time not pushing it harder.
14:43Stu, you might be able to speak to this, or JT, about how going into the red zone is not beneficial for these athletes, right?
14:49So they need to push it, they need a high heart rate, they need to be on it, but not overdoing it because then they could tire themselves out too much.
14:57Yeah, and just to expand on that more, I think it's more about when I was training, it was about being able to recover, you know, so you're in that red zone, you're going to get there, especially if you're chasing these guys down, but then being able to take a half a lap off, you know, a quarter lap off, to be able to bring that heart rate back down, recover to build a push, that's where the real champions and the guys that are in shape, it's not about just going wide open, it's about being able to recover, and so far, you know, they've got it figured out, JT.
15:23They do, and you know, the science comes into play there, right, so they know that JT's running a higher heart rate, but, you know, talking to Johnny O'Meara about this, and he said, you know, JT can handle a higher workload, like they really have to be careful, you see RJ make a huge mistake there, but they have to manage Hunter's workload more than they do JT, and that's just through blood tests and understanding what Hunter can handle versus what, you know, and what they respond to better, so knowing your athlete, knowing what's going to let them be their best self on Saturday is key, because if you don't show up at a hundred percent,
15:53on Saturday, you're simply not doing it right, well, there's a lot on the line at this point, they've got to be 100% now, Hampshire is third, but Sexton is right there, and Jett Lawrence is right behind him, this might be the most pivotal part of this moto, yeah, and you just saw Eli Tomac going down, you can start to see these guys another couple laps, they're going to see Eli on the same straightaway,
16:15And just as I was thinking what's going to happen, Eli's going to start rotting behind him, because Hunter Lawrence got that gap, now you see Jett Lawrence popping in the picture, but to me, once he got behind Chase, now he seems like he's settling, and as he roots is our drone at the moment, wow, what a shot, oh, it's getting close now, yeah, Chase better watch out, because he's going to be focused on RJ, and I believe Jett has some pretty good lines, he might have a sneak attack,
16:42From Jett Lawrence, I want to just beat the number one for sure, we know how good he is, yeah, it's Hunter Lawrence's motor to lose, but I mentioned how pivotal it is, it's because of how badly these two want to beat each other, and Hampshire, he wants to measure himself, it's his first year in the 450 class, what can he do in a battle, we haven't seen many good starts from him, and so far, he's holding his own, halfway through this first 450 motor and Ironman, a reminder, Monster Energy, available now, again, kudos to RJ, hanging in there, but here comes Sexton, yeah,
17:12And look who's right in front of him, once we go to the next camera shot, that's Eli Tomac, Sexton makes the move on Hefshire, outside, outside worked, and they now have Tomac in sight,
17:24Now watch, I believe now you're going to watch Jett Lawrence get aggressive, he's going to close in on RJ, it'll be more a sense of urgency to try to get around him, not let that number one get away,
17:33The last thing you want to do is let Jay Sexton get around number three as well, and this is that critical juncture, look at how big the gap is between Sexton and Lawrence now, compared to one lap ago,
17:45So Jett has to go to work on his own, 250 class rival, Hampshire, cannot say enough good, though, about the rookie campaign for Hampshire, here in Pro Motocross, every week, better, better, better,
17:58Yeah, he's riding really good, I mean, this track is really difficult, really hard to push on these guys, and you see them when they start picking up the pace, easy mistakes,
18:06And a lot of it comes from when they land off the jump, they miss it by a few feet, it's really sticky, so you'll see these guys hit the bike, the body moves forward, but now you can see Jett Lawrence starting to close in, and try to get RJ this next lap.
18:23Is there an opening here, he's going to follow, yeah, he's probably staying close to him, maybe having the next opportunity, unless RJ makes a mistake right here, next opportunity is going to be right before the finish line.
18:36Into the sand, go, all right, so you see these next two turns, you're thinking?
18:49Yeah, RJ got through that section pretty good, as Chase got around Eli, I believe.
18:54Yeah, you're right, that was, I wasn't sure if that was a lap rider, no, that was Tomek, so Sexton up to second, it has come unraveled for Tomek, after the whole shot, and you hear the mechanics yelling.
19:06Jack drops on the inside of the grudges, you have RJ right there, there you go, got him, now he knows that Chase has got a round, Eli, he's going to do the same thing, he's got to follow the number one up front, and here's the difference though, it's about a three second gap between Lawrence and Sexton now, and Lawrence has to try to get Tomek, not sure what has happened to Eli.
19:29Yeah, not really sure what happened to Hunter Lawrence on that last lap, he ran a 209, the guys behind him was 205, outside of Eli, so that gap was 10 plus seconds, he lost four seconds that lap, yeah, over four seconds, yeah, look at the gap, went from 12 and a half to 7.9,
19:52And he got bailed out a little bit, because Tomek wasn't the rider on the charge, but as Sexton, or Jet get there, who knows, still 10 minutes and two laps to go.
20:03He had a hard part for Hunter, maybe it was a lapper, maybe he had a tip over, I don't think he would drop off the pace that quickly if it was anything else,
20:11So, hard part for him, he doesn't want those guys to be on that same straightaway, because you'll see that gap close really quick as it's starting to close down now.
20:21Oh, you talk so much about being able to see the guy and catch that toe, that's why they have the dogs at the racetrack for the horses, they've had to chase something.
20:30Well, that's what Jet Lawrence is doing with Eli Tomek now.
20:36He can see the Yamaha man up ahead.
20:41Under the bridge.
20:43Yeah, Eli looks like he saw a state trooper, the way he's slowing down out there, because to me, he's starting to lose that toe to Chase Sexton, and Jet was trying to get on him right there, but he made a quick mistake, and you don't want to get caught behind him, because you see that gap already, he's losing to Chase.
21:03Oh, I thought Tomek made a mistake, that's just a really difficult run there on the inside, the big jump, the triple of the finish line from Lawrence.
21:11Eli's showing some fight, though, he knows there's an 18 behind him, but just like RJ, those guys are missing that corner, it seems like you've got to go out a little bit wider to get in there, once they miss that run, easy pass for the 18.
21:24But the damage is done, Sexton, three and a half seconds up the road, got through that pack, a little bit quicker, the Hampshire, Justin Cooper, Tomek group.
21:37Hunter Lawrence locked it back down, 206, not quite as quick as Sexton, but a lot better, and that one bad lap that he had, there's the 96 leading it.
21:49Yeah, but Hunter made a huge mistake, right, another one, yeah, and you're going to see Chase pop in the screen, so difficult racetrack, and you see these bikes dancing around a lot.
21:58Air sex didn't, yeah, how's that?
22:03That's just the way the corners are, they're getting really run, some of these slow corners, getting those hooks into it, so it doesn't do any good to just have that roll speed, you almost have to go straight into it, let that bike settle, and then get on the gas.
22:15Seems like these guys trying to get on the gas early, the back end's popping out, and you see the feet's flying.
22:24It's getting tough on Hunter right now.
22:27Where is Sexton?
22:29Looked a little closer last time he saw it, JT.
22:33Wow, this just feels so reminiscent of 2024.
22:37Chase was so strong late in these motos, and there was just this error in about inevitability in those motos last year.
22:44Now, things have changed, Hunter's approved, Chase has been injured a lot of the season, so we don't know exactly how that's going to play out, and we also have, you know, that number 18 looking back there as well, but man, Chase has to feel like this is his time late in the motos to make a move.
22:59Yeah, but with Chase, the hard part is, if Jetstar's closing up, does he start picking up their pace?
23:05Because I think you can override this racetrack, as we're seeing Hunter Lawrence make those mistakes, Chase just got to continue to do what he's doing now.
23:12He's got enough pace to close in on Hunter Lawrence, but that's going to be changed if he sees the 18, so I think his biggest competition is the guy behind him, not keeping him focused on Hunter Lawrence at the moment.
23:23Now it's all the five seconds.
23:25Another 209 for Hunter, another bad lap.
23:28That's two out of the last three, and now he has lap traffic to deal with.
23:31Yeah, Hunter's really getting hooked up with these lap riders, and Jet's starting to close in, so we're going to have a battle for the lead here soon.
23:42Oh, boy.
23:44Stretch run, six minutes and two laps to go.
23:52Which direction will this go?
23:54Oh, how much is track and how much is rider here?
23:59This place is gnarly for sure.
24:00Yeah, that wasn't a mistake by Hunter.
24:02He was trying to get out of that rut because of avoid that hook, so you're probably going to see a lot of these guys back in start sliding out because they're trying to pop out of that rut.
24:09They're aboard that, the hook in that section.
24:13Man, it's a difficult race track at the moment.
24:15Oh, yeah.
24:15All right, folks, Super Motocross Playoffs return.
24:19It's racing on September 6th in Charlotte, North Carolina, September 13th in St. Louis, Missouri, and then the SMX World Championship finale after St. Louis.
24:30That'll take place September 20th in Las Vegas.
24:33Be there where champions are crowned.
24:35Go to SuperMotocross.com for tickets and info.
24:38Chase Sexton came back, wanted to be ready for those playoffs and the world title run, maybe a little bit early.
24:44He already got a win in Pro Motocross, and he is showing he has to stuff to battle the boards again today at Ironman.
24:56And Jet really has not closed on Sexton much.
25:01The last two laps was right there in the exchange with Hampshire.
25:05Sexton put a little gap on him.
25:07Yeah, I think Jet understands how difficult this racetrack is, and every time he tries to push it, all these guys make the mistake.
25:13As long as Chase is closing in on Hunter, I think Jet would be somewhat content to just slowly close in on Chase, let this thing battle up.
25:23Now the gap's down to 3.3.
25:25It's like each of these guys are just closing in on each other just steadily, and I think that's the way they're going to have to attack this racetrack, because it's really easy to make a lot of mistakes.
25:38Katie?
25:38Yeah, talking with Chase here before the moto, I was asking him how the brake was, and he said, yeah, it was good.
25:44I got a couple days off training, a week off some riding.
25:47He said, but the challenge in all of it.
25:49Uh-oh.
25:49Went up the track there, Katie.
25:50We're good.
25:51Go ahead.
25:51Back on track, literally.
25:53He said the challenge is the mental capacity.
25:56My mind doesn't shut off, so I can be off the bike, or I could be doing some cross training, but I'm still thinking about racing.
26:02So is it a brake?
26:03No, not really.
26:04And honestly, he said he likes racing each of these race weekends because it keeps the momentum going.
26:10The brake kind of puts a hard stop on it, and it does make the season, at the end of the season, feel a little bit longer.
26:16Yeah, well, he's going to have something to think about now.
26:18That off-track excursion cost him, and now Jett Lawrence has him in his sights.
26:23Yeah, and just as you mentioned, Jason, I mean, two mistakes from Chase.
26:28Now look at him.
26:29Look like Jett Lawrence was about three seconds back.
26:31Now he's on the rear tire.
26:33Easy to make, and nothing really changed besides those mistakes that off-track excursion, and then a few through those Tom Woods section.
26:40Now you've got 18 all over you.
26:42Well, we can talk about points and playoffs and all that coming up.
26:45I mean, how big a momentum swing, confidence swing is it?
26:49Whichever one of these two comes out on top of this battle.
26:52Well, right now, if you're talking about, I bet both these guys are like, playoffs, playoffs?
26:57We're talking about playoffs?
26:58We're talking about this at the moment.
27:00So it is huge for these guys.
27:02Oh, and Jett is right there.
27:10Lawrence has made up unbelievable ground.
27:12We had him in 23rd place on the first lap after nearly getting stuck in the starting gate.
27:18He's closed to the rear wheel of Sexton for second, and now the big lead.
27:23Here it comes!
27:26Oh, man.
27:27Jett's going to get on the inside.
27:28Let's see.
27:29No, Jett able to chop him off, but Sexton uses the run to get a drive and fight back, and shuts him down, and big time shuts him down.
27:39Yeah, he had to shut him down at first.
27:41I'm like, no, you didn't.
27:42No, you didn't.
27:43But he saw his teammate, Tom Vial.
27:45That's a little Tom Vial action right there.
27:47You've got to lean on him.
27:47From last year, we have not seen these two really ever get aggressive with each other like that.
27:53Sexton even gave him a look back.
27:55Yeah, it's almost like Chase didn't realize Jett was that close to these guys.
27:59Now look at the gap between him and Hunter Lawrence.
28:01Those guys start battling and allowed Hunter to pull away.
28:05Check this out again.
28:07Watch him in the box.
28:08Yeah, it was surprising.
28:09So maybe Chase thought he was going to miss that inside rut, which he did.
28:12Jett got through that section.
28:13But this is all about who wants it the most.
28:15He leaned on him.
28:17Nice save by Jett.
28:18Not only did he not go down off Chase's rear end, but to miss those ruts.
28:22Oh!
28:23Both were swapping, and they nearly touched.
28:26Jett to the inside.
28:27Sexton again gets aggressive and shuts it down.
28:30Yeah, I mean, that's what he had to do.
28:33Got to slow him down, take a little break in that corner.
28:36But all that time, they're allowing Hunter Lawrence to get away.
28:40Yeah, that has worked in Hunter's favor.
28:43It's still a three-second gap.
28:45And time now starting to run out.
28:46One minute and two laps to go.
28:50Well, I think Chase just sent notice to Jett that he's going to fight for this.
28:53You know, it's good to see.
28:56Like this line by Jett, but he doesn't do it this time.
28:58So let's see what happens.
29:00Does the 18th think about that 61-point lead at the moment?
29:05Or does he go back after Chase Sexton?
29:08Okay, and meanwhile, Sexton, you see the pit board.
29:11They're still thinking, go for the moto win after fending off two attacks from Jett.
29:20Now, the biggest thing for Chase, if he can keep that gap on Jett, he'll start focusing in back on Hunter.
29:27That's what I said earlier.
29:28Chase's biggest issue was going to be to 18, was going to dictate this race.
29:32If he closed in, he started focusing on him.
29:33Now, we'll see if Chase got three laps to go, if he can close that gap on Hunter, which I do believe he can.
29:39And three seconds again.
29:41Now the gap between Sexton and Jett Lawrence.
29:43So, yeah, I don't know.
29:45Is Jett going to put in one more attack?
29:47Will he play it safe?
29:48JT.
29:48I think you can see Jett's body language there.
29:51I think he just realized, hey, it's not going to happen.
29:53I'm not going to throw away this championship trying to pass Chase.
29:57And immediately that last lap, he just sat up, and his body language immediately changed.
30:01So, we haven't really seen him relent very often, but I think he's just decided he's going to settle for third this time around.
30:07Yeah, I agree with you, JT.
30:08And that's what he's worked this whole season for, to have that big points lead, to have the opportunity to do it.
30:13But kids at home, that's why even if a guy's faster than you, you fight him.
30:17You fight him.
30:17Because Jett Lawrence, who was the fastest guy, Chase fought him.
30:21Now, look at this.
30:22Now that gap at the lead is closing, and Chase is going to have an opportunity to get Hunter Lawrence.
30:26Because even with all the stuff that was going on that last lap, him and Hunter ran the same lap times.
30:31And we saw what he was doing with Jett.
30:33Keep fighting the guy, no matter how fast it is.
30:35You never know what's going to happen.
30:36And the number one just showed you.
30:38Oh, yeah, some real fortitude there.
30:41Meanwhile, look at Tomek.
30:42He has gone back to six.
30:43There's got to be a problem there.
30:45He's lost a ton of ground.
30:46Hampshire and Justin Cooper have now passed him.
30:49Remember how good he looked at the beginning of this moto.
30:51So, not sure.
30:53Oh, no, and Hunter Lawrence just stole.
30:56Sexton is side-by-side for the lead.
30:58Yeah, I don't know if Hunter has stalled it in that corner.
31:00I think that lap rider got in front of it.
31:02Oh, okay.
31:02He just basically stopped.
31:04And Chase almost lost it right there.
31:06Oh, this is going to be great.
31:08A little over two laps to go.
31:10And a fight for the number one spot.
31:12Sexton found a low line on the outside.
31:14And takes the lead.
31:16All right, you go back a lap.
31:17Wasn't he just getting past by 18 and seeing that?
31:22He was able to now focus in on Hunter Lawrence.
31:24In one lap, he closed that gap.
31:25But Hunter is going to try to fight him.
31:28Sexton immediately gets to the right side to shut it down.
31:31Yeah, Hunter doesn't know what Chase just did to his brother.
31:34He ain't let no inside open toe.
31:36Hey, you got to give credit for the mental fortitude here for Sexton.
31:40That was heavy pressure being applied.
31:42He rode defensive.
31:43It worked.
31:44And then he went all the way to the lead.
31:45But Hunter's not done.
31:47Yeah, Hunter's not done.
31:49I mean, at some point, Hunter realized Chase was coming.
31:51Maybe find some better lines.
31:53Try to get Chase and make another mistake.
31:54This race isn't over for Hunter Lawrence if he can stay close to him.
31:58But very impressive by Chase Sexton.
32:00Bad start going down and then fighting off Jet Lawrence.
32:04Not holding him back to make him just settle for that third place.
32:08And then going after Hunter Lawrence.
32:09Very impressive on the number one.
32:11Absolutely.
32:12Statement ride as he can hold it.
32:14Hunter still pouring it on.
32:18Man, that says a lot right there to fend it off.
32:21The attacks.
32:21Three groups went back to the lead.
32:23That one big mistake.
32:25Lap rider definitely costly for Hunter.
32:29Yeah, now a lap out of the house to go.
32:31Yeah, and you go back to a few weekends ago.
32:33Because Chase Sexton won that first motor at Y-Jugal,
32:36gave him the confidence to be able to fight Jet Lawrence off.
32:39I believe I got him and know that.
32:41And now look at him.
32:43All that's caused for what he was able to do.
32:44And that's where these riders talk about confidence.
32:46Any kind of confidence, we're all looking for it.
32:49Chase has found it.
32:49And this is going to be a huge motor if he can hold this thing.
32:51He's going to be able to do something off.
32:53He'll start those playoffs like he said he wanted to do.
32:55He's feeling it now.
32:57You mentioned yesterday you're watching the S&X Next kids out here.
33:01You were determining how sideways they're throwing it on jumps,
33:04how they're feeling.
33:04That was the most whipped we've seen.
33:07Sexton over that jump, JT.
33:08He's feeling it right now.
33:09He is feeling it, Weegean.
33:10You know, it's funny to see the transformation of Chase Sexton.
33:13You know, when he was in 2022, he's on that Honda.
33:15He's battling, you know, Eli Tomac for this championship.
33:18I think speed was his biggest weapon.
33:21He goes on to win the 2023 Monster Supercross championship.
33:24He was always the fastest guy.
33:25That's what we knew him as.
33:27But then you look at 2024, and now I think he's really turned into the guy that we think
33:31is the fittest.
33:32He's the fittest guy on the racetrack.
33:34And if you allow him to stick around late in the race, you are going to regret it every
33:38single time as he grabs the white flag here in the league.
33:42Yeah, well, we don't want to overstate.
33:44I mean, look, Jett Lawrence did practically get stuck in the starting gate, so he had his
33:47issues, too.
33:47But even last year when Sexton was winning, that was the big question.
33:50What if Jett Lawrence, the champion for the previous year, was here?
33:54At least in this race, Jett got to him.
33:57He was fast enough to catch him, but Sexton held him off.
33:59So we've got some serious bench racing heading into Moto2.
34:05Yeah, now, you know, nice ride by Jorge.
34:08He just got around Eli Tomac for sixth place.
34:11But, yeah, just talking about your point, I think Jett was, he went out there, Chase,
34:16since he was racing.
34:17The only difference is, is now Jett's not going to take the chance.
34:20After what happened that lap with Chase, Jett's going to rely on that points lead.
34:24But he went out there to fight, to go up against Jace Sexton.
34:27So it's not like he's going to be like, oh, I just wasn't really riding.
34:30Chase aren't in his victory if he can hold this thing off.
34:33Yeah, that says a lot right there.
34:35Sexton won the race at Washougal.
34:38And now the fans cheering him.
34:40This is Hampshire, by the way.
34:43Lent Long goes off track in fourth.
34:46That's the first time I've seen RJ do an RJ thing, you know, all year long.
34:49But still running fourth place, very impressed by him.
34:52Holding off Justin Cooper, which only about a second.
34:54Yeah, well, I wonder then, the A&A is definitely going to look at that one
34:58and see if he didn't lose enough time while off the track.
35:01Well, I'm going to handle that for you.
35:02J-Bone, he's all right.
35:03Okay.
35:04He's all right.
35:04Don't do nothing to him.
35:05All right.
35:07Sexton's all right as well for his second moto win this year.
35:13And somewhat of a local race, we talk about red moto as a track.
35:16He grew up racing on this track as a motocross facility.
35:19He didn't exist when he was younger.
35:21But he did actually race to GNCC in the woods once, I believe.
35:24The Illinois native coming down to Indiana.
35:27And he's definitely got the crowd on his side as well.
35:31Yeah, this is probably closer to that GNC racetrack than what you would say
35:35this track's been in years past.
35:37Just with the rucks and all that, this is a difficult racetrack.
35:40Well, he handled it best.
35:41He went down in this turn.
35:43Comes all the way back to get the lead.
35:47And the first moto win goes to Chase Sexton.
35:51Almost crashed again.
35:52He almost crashed.
35:53It's just difficult.
35:54He said it.
35:55Yeah.
35:56Hunter Lawrence fought hard.
35:57He will end up second.
36:00And Jet Lawrence said, ah, it was close enough.
36:03And he's going to cruise home in third after some contact from Sexton
36:09who rode him aggressively.
36:12I wouldn't say dirty.
36:13No, that wasn't dirty.
36:15No.
36:16Just letting him not.
36:17He won.
