00:00:45nicknamed by locals as the Batman Building the tallest champion not only today but in the history
00:00:50of boxing is the six foot seven inch WBO heavyweight title holder Henry Akinwande

00:00:57in June of this year the undefeated and largely unknown Englishman faced highly touted
00:01:03Jeremy Williams for the vacant title
00:01:06just two months ago Akinwande known as a straight up and down European style
00:01:20fighter showed unusual movement and surprising aggression as he stopped a badly beaten Alexander
00:01:27Zulkin in the 10th round but in order for Akinwande to join boxing's heavyweight elite he must continue to
00:01:36not only win but to impress
00:01:43and let's get a look here at the challenger Scott Welch out of Brighton England for Welch the WBO's number one heavyweight contender
00:01:51it is his first attempt at a world championship
00:02:01that's
00:02:14welch making the long slow walk from his dressing room toward the toward the ring his biggest win
00:02:20in 1995 over james ayabola for the british the commonwealth and something called the wbo
00:02:27intercontinental heavyweight title last year he stopped 46 year old joe bugner and uh bernie
00:02:35what's your take on on mr welch a tough kid a street kid one of those guys that uh hangs in
00:02:40gangs and uh fights for the fun of it he he acted that way in the way and he butted uh akawande one
00:02:46of the most peaceful fighters i've ever seen and uh he brings what he says is that there's a lack of
00:02:52bottle that's a cockney word a lack of bottle in akawande bottle which means glass which rhymes with
00:02:58another anatomical part means you haven't got gut he doesn't believe he's got bottle and he's bringing
00:03:02bottles to the fight so this may be the battle of the bottles but this guy comes is coming to brawl
00:03:08it's not coming to box it's coming to brawl and you're right he does does it basically for fun
00:03:13because he is very well off financially he owns two retirement homes in england he lives on the water
00:03:21in bright england very affluent uh surroundings and he and akawande two very different personalities
00:03:27in and out of the ring you see behind him frank warren uh british motor he said to me you're gonna see
00:03:32one heck of a fight for about three or four rounds what's gonna happen after that i can't guarantee you
00:03:36i can guarantee you for three or four fights tough and there it is the union jack in support of scott welch
00:03:44with a very determined look on his face and here's the man he'll be facing the champion undefeated
00:03:51henry akawande at six foot seven on the akawande the tallest world champion in boxing history tonight
00:03:58he makes his second defense of the wbo heavyweight title the tall guy was um from italy primo primo
00:04:07carneiro and they called him the ambling alp yeah he was a character yes he fell well he was one i think
00:04:14that bud schilberg wrote the harder they fall about remember all easy fights and then he found out there's
00:04:19the real world of boxing well this guy is now taller than primo carnera at six foot seven and here
00:04:26he comes with that chiseled well-sculptured body and there's the championship belt behind him
00:04:34coming into some very mellow mellow music and bobby and ches what problems does this imposing physical
00:04:40specimen pose to opponents well number one he's got to reach over just about everybody practically
00:04:46the half the distance of the ring he is six foot seven with incredible reach if he can keep him at
00:04:51arm's length that arm's length is so far away that he'll help punch every day but he has great leverage
00:04:55with that height and he's a peaceful guy i'm sure he's not doing this for a good time or for fun no no
00:05:00he's not and he has been antagonized by uh scott welch he's got that jab the long straight right hand but
00:05:07as we've seen he's kind of reluctant to throw the one two or the one two three combination
00:05:13followed up with the left we know he's six foot seven he only weighs uh in the low 230s i weigh 228
00:05:18and i'm on five ten half he's not a thick man and not real strong but he is sharp and we uh we had
00:05:24some fireworks at the press conference this past thursday we're going to show you what happened
00:05:30i can want he and welch really got into it watch this don king of the center of things as welch will move
00:05:36in akawande and he's going to give him a joke there it is the headbutt by welch and as we discovered
00:05:45by talking to both yesterday genuine animosity mostly from welch's end welch calls akawande a fraud
00:05:51a traitor to england because he lives in florida and comes uh comes into the american anthem he's
00:05:56betrayed britain says scott welch akawande told us i'll go wherever i can to earn my living a lot of

00:10:04still bad blood you noticed uh welch nearly walked back and wanting all the way to his
00:10:11corner to stare him down big henry had the reputation of being a boring fighter a lot of
00:10:16grabbing and jabbing his image improved with his explosive win over jeremy williams for the vacant
00:10:21title however not a knockout artist but looking to improve his punching technique particularly against
00:10:27this man scott russ looking to become only the fourth heavyweight champ from england after bob
00:10:31fitz simmons frank bruno and aikenwande here we go this is the first all english world title fight in any
00:10:37weight division to take place off british soil well you can see scott is all wound up well he's got
00:10:43a tight spring there he wants to go at it he just can't figure out how to get in without getting
00:10:47hit by that left hook and the left jab that'll stand him off and welcher going to the brawling tactics
00:10:54there but uh neutralized by the straight right hand of henry aikenwande no you know scott welsh looks
00:11:01a little tight right now a little jittery that will drain you energy wise that'll take something
00:11:05out of it he needs to just relax and start work and work his way in make henry throw some punches
00:11:10and miss and make him pay go to the body yeah he is so into getting this thing into a rumble and he's
00:11:15too tight and that'll that'll drain him akawande said to us i fight when i want to fight and meaning he
00:11:21picks his spots the other guy's just trying to look wildly without any plan as to how to get in
00:11:26that's a bad game plan for for scott i can one day predicting a third round knockout
00:11:33welsh call this is pretty mentioned this fight is about heart and guts
00:11:37and he said aikenwande has none of that he said i'll slow him down do whatever it takes
00:11:42i refuse to lose he said i have a plan i'll blitz him for 12 rounds
00:11:48henry doesn't plan to be around that long you know it's funny from time to time the
00:11:52fighters won't divulge their strategy and welsh was one of those who didn't necessarily trust
00:11:58wwf tactics here and now holding and hitting by welsh that may be because he didn't have a strategy
00:12:03about his strategy rough him up is not a boxing strategy he claimed that akawande is not prepared
00:12:09to stand in there and trade with him he said akawande will run let's go akawande is not actually
00:12:15a runner a basic mover and obviously jabbing from the outside but not really a runner he likes to just
00:12:21step around his man keep him at bay with that big long reign well welsh has to fight his way
00:12:26behind jabs he can't just leap and i can want he's very patient he waits for his moment just as he did
00:12:32with jeremy williams after that reckless start by jeremy and i can want he said hey if welsh comes out
00:12:38brawling as he has he'll be open for the uppercut he said i'll just pick my time uh warren frankie
00:12:44warren uh english promoter said to me he's got to go to the body he's going to go under and he's going
00:12:50to get to the body i said that is easier said than done this guy's got a jab to make you pay a stiff
00:12:54tool to come in and he said i'll set everything up off the jet this is you said and wait for the opening
00:13:00you just don't get that body looks inviting you just don't get in that easy
00:13:11it's going to be a lot of holding this is the type of fight one's going to charge and one's going to
00:13:14tie up there's going to be some punches in between but this could get very ugly as scott gets a little
00:13:19bit more desperate you'll see some budding going on because this guy's a tough fighter and then it's
00:13:23when it's going to get tough and that's when the referee is going to have to be very very strict
00:13:28william connor's has referee a lot of of championship fights he shouldn't have any problems up from
00:13:33highly of florida there's the bell round one over
00:13:47now listen the first round's out of the way stay cold stay calm stay calved and you'll start edging
00:14:04into it now but keep the pressure keep the pace now listen pete you know what i'm saying listen
00:14:11you've got to hold your ground with him scott keep your right hand tight move away from his right hand
00:14:15and listen hold your ground you've got to be the man you've got to take your you've got to take
00:14:19well time off of him okay you listen hold your hand when he comes scott move him with your hands up
00:14:24pressure him pressure him and i you listen hold your ground what it's got what it what it that's the
00:14:32first round out of the way keep the pressure on the very thick british accent of jim mcdonald on the
00:14:38corner of scott welch and don turner also the trainer of a fellow named evander holyfield with instructions
00:14:44to henry act in one day here we go round number two very noticeable scar over the right eye of welch
00:14:50that's not from this fight it's from a headbutt in his third fight back in 1993 we'll keep an eye out on
00:15:00and that was 14 stitches to close that off he said he's had problems with it from time to time
00:15:05i would think so still it looks red right now it's just started right now welch is waiting too long
00:15:10he's letting i can want to work behind the jab even though the jab's not being effective he's blocking
00:15:14most of them he's not applying that pressure the body pressure or the punching pressure he's not
00:15:19throwing punches back in one day undefeated his only blemish controversial draw with axel schultz in 92
00:15:25which he later avenged good opposition and he's done well you know sometimes fighters mistake quiet
00:15:34fighters for weakness or or not strength and that's the exact opposite of most of these guys are very
00:15:39quiet and then they fight like crazy look at this hitting behind the head of scott walsh the crowd
00:15:45getting on welch and so is bill connor next time leave your point and i'll tell you what there was a
00:15:50little bit of a butt in there that didn't look so incidental next time connor says he'll take a point
00:15:56away from welch you can see as frustration builds up he's going to revert back to street fighting buddy
00:16:01hitting behind the head and this referee won't take it he won't take it again the street tactics the
00:16:07brawling tactics of scott walsh bodily picking i can wind up with the left hand there working the
00:16:15left hook to the body now here's that shotgun jab oh that was nice that was nice and again i can one day
00:16:23looks over to referee bill connor's as if to say give me a hand here mr referee this guy's sitting below the
00:16:28belt now
00:16:32not gonna want they just waiting for his moment i'm so sure i might have to get on the ladder
00:16:36just to hit him below the belt what welch is doing right now he's ducking he's trying to weave inside
00:16:42once he goes to weave inside he just ties him up he's got to throw punches while he's moving
00:16:48welch with the raw skills
00:16:50back in march he stopped 46 year old joe bugner in the six i'm not sure i'd boast that too loudly but
00:17:00it is a uh a w see where bugner wants to fight uh george foreman they could hold the fight at one of uh
00:17:05welch's uh convalescent homes yeah so he could just walk to bed when they get through well i'll tell you
00:17:10hey if they wouldn't do uh george foreman with larry holmes they're not going to do with joe bugner
00:17:14i want to tell you the worst fight look out
00:17:18welch goes down to one knee but that was not a knockdown he's more of a run over yes
00:17:23and then he hit him on the back of the head when he's down
00:17:26that's exactly what bill connor's just said no more of that back in one hand
00:17:30so this is uh turning into a foul fest
00:17:34with a combination at the bill back in one
00:17:50hands up and walk him down this guy is ready to go as soon as you hit him
00:17:55when he comes in you faint him and you saw an uppercut and left hook man that's all don't
00:18:02be dirty just keep your head you understand we don't take him out but you got to do it your way
00:18:09put your jabs your uppercuts your hook let's take a look at some of that uh dirty fighting that keeps
00:18:15uh cropping see that that looked like a that was that was the headbutt ferdy a butt and then a headbutt
00:18:21you saw that headbutt that's that twist to the head real fast is a headbutt
00:18:27and then probably well you know here i can want to just kind of runs over and leaps in
00:18:31and then hits him in the back of the head while he's down on one knee
00:18:34both of these guys letting their uh emotions get the better of them right now yes both
00:18:38resorting to the roughhouse tactics as we enter round number three in round two welch got a warning
00:18:46from bill connor shortly after i can want to connect it as if to put an exclamation point
00:18:52on the warning
00:18:55i can while they're wearing that knee brace that he wears all the time apparently doesn't
00:18:59bother him just gives him comfort security if you will to know that that's bolstered up properly
00:19:05you know he got some very good advice in the corner did i can whiney turner told him listen
00:19:09bring him step back throw the right uppercut and the left hook behind the guy's laying right there
00:19:14for good advice if he does it we'll see yeah he said hey welch is ready to go
00:19:20i can want a good defensive fighter he gets in and out pretty fast you know in profile just about
00:19:27nothing else this guy looks like jerry quarry remember jerry quarry in profile in profile in
00:19:33profile no but yeah not in talent uh but maybe in guts well you see just a minute ago saw welch
00:19:39slip a nice right hand back swing up underneath but then just hold or get inside he's got to throw
00:19:44the uppercutting hook himself he's got to come in with punches and he makes second one he missed
00:19:49scott welch very patriotic came in calling i can want all kinds of names because he lives in florida and
00:19:56comes into the american national anthem he said he wants to uh bring the title back to england the true
00:20:02british title you notice the you oh nice right and severe right by henry akinwadi that landed
00:20:09to the face of welch and now he backs welch up against the ropes and pours it on
00:20:14you see good back good fighting good couple of good punches backed off a little bit
00:20:19takes a look at his work hey he's he's doing a job on he's doing a job on scott welch with a wild
00:20:25swing and a miss afterwards there's that straight left jab by akinwadi looking to set up the right
00:20:33right now scott welch cannot get down the timing of henry akinwadi he cannot time the big shots he's
00:20:39making some of the jabs missed but he's not countering he's blocking some and he's still not counting
00:20:43what would you like to see i can want to throw some more combinations though uh a right left right

00:20:55i don't think you could do it on this guy it's it's not the fighter force i mean he is
00:21:00taking apart one punch at a time he's landing him effectively look at that and there it is one punch
00:21:05at a time wearing a welch down as you can see it's already uh taking effect he's doing what he wants to
00:21:11do he fights when he wants to oh a thumping left to the top of welch's head by akinwadi
00:21:23that's got a hard head though that right hand is going to carry him out of this place

00:22:53stuff under the chin you understand no more you clean up or just fall for that you can hear the
00:22:58words of referee bill connor that offset word these days disqualify
00:23:04i mean we're getting to be a disqualifying sport here you know somewhere in the rule books it's
00:23:08actually illegal to clinch in boxing but no one ever bothers with it yeah right so i think somehow we're
00:23:13gonna have to rewrite the entire rule book they ought to tear that page out and burn it this is
00:23:17a joke guys uh how about uh filling a fight the foul fest starring scott welch and andrew galata
00:23:24yeah that would be good now that's a good good combination
00:23:28a lot is even too blatant for him oh nice right hand again and his leg wasn't up in the air that

00:23:36hey akawande's game he comes right back in and a vicious uppercut to the body of scott welch
00:23:51he told us he would wait for the opening to try to unleash the uppercut on welch
00:23:56right now welch appears to be waiting leaning on ropes and waiting for one big counter as if it's going to

00:24:22a certain amount of bottle to start with i believe so i mean he was so disdainful of him in the interview he's
00:24:27got nothing we'll go right through and we're going to fight look at this it's round four and oh round
00:24:33four and there stands henry akawande pounding on the sky if you're just joining us bottle is a cockney
00:24:39expression for heart or guts and scott welch said that akawande didn't have it
00:24:45if he's good enough he won't he won't really need it right well he's not going to have to draw much on
00:24:50it today because this is he is giving a little lesson here too see part of the problem with a fighter of that
00:24:56height and that kind of reach henry can just use a couple jams as soon as well steps to him he can
00:25:00hold and somewhere along the way i think i believe that's why they wrote that rule of clinching being bad
00:25:06it's probably a tall guy like that that initiated the writing
00:25:12akawande with that that awkward style and causes all kinds of problems
00:25:16and he's holding and hitting akawande and referee bill connors was behind it
00:25:25heading for the bell in round number four scott welts is befuddled in the sense that he
00:25:30doesn't know how to initiate the action all he can do is take and receive henry's action he's not a counter punch
00:25:35he's got to be first you're waiting when you're talking about boxing too much but you're being
00:25:48negative scott you've got to lay on the line you said you can put it on the line
00:26:04now listen can you find his short but slip his move to move in on him when you find him with a jab
00:26:11when you find him with a jab all right let's take a look at how things are progressing in the
00:26:16dirty arena as you can see they're getting in close when they get in close i mean that's when
00:26:20you have the opportunity to to hold and hitting and you also have a little bit of choking yeah yeah
00:26:26choking every little bit of things uh but not bad that wasn't a bad example that was just sort of a
00:26:33that's the way it goes now what is that henriac and bonde uh sticking his tongue out at somebody
00:26:40in the crowd round number five oh really that's unlike him how unsportsmanlike you know what
00:26:46somebody probably you know screamed something to him in a derogatory manner it's happened to me many
00:26:50times uh a fighter a friend a fighter a girlfriend or somebody i'm fighting obviously they hate me i've
00:26:56seen you do that to ferdy and going through the lobby people do that to me exactly you're in the same
00:27:01wave lanes there here we go round number five the roughhouse tactics continue and uh welch off
00:27:08balance just landed one straight on the forehead back in because his corner is bleeding him you first
00:27:13don't be in a panic but you have to attack you said you were going to go get him you don't do it
00:27:17so they're they're getting exasperated in the corner he can't do it consistently backing up he's never
00:27:24going to have any real chance to build some momentum going backwards getting hit welch is coming in
00:27:29head first like a like a bull here trying to head butt and caught an elbow right in the face
00:27:34he's frustrated he's got to be careful that can want to because uh it's going to bust his head open
00:27:40the result of a vicious head first move by scott wells the challenger oh very clean let's go out of
00:27:47there henry he started doing it at the press conference on thursday and it's carried over
00:27:51into the fight well he might have won the press conference but he's losing this oh yeah no no no
00:27:56no breaking there stop it scott very clean let's go let him out him let him out i can one day a very
00:28:02bloodshot eyes right now he's just trying to to hold off this uh this big guy scott well
00:28:10strong cruiser from brighton england come on but it's like in one day's fight he dominated alexander
00:28:17zulk and he ripped up uh zulkins face trying to do the same here you see even even on the attack
00:28:23there you'll notice very clearly i can want to two jabs the right hand hook and hold two jabs right
00:28:28hand hook and hold he doesn't want to get into a blow but at the same time he shouldn't be allowed
00:28:33to punch and hold just because he has reached advantage there's a nice combination right there it's a nice
00:28:40there's that combination we were talking about the combination behind the head he added a good one too there
00:28:47now some inside uppercuts by akinwande very clean
00:28:54bill connors has his hands full here tonight here's the left jab akinwande surveying the situation
00:29:04you know the write-up of this fight is the kamikaze assault promised by uh scott in the first three
00:29:09rounds didn't materialize when he found out that the other guy is a better boxer it has disintegrated
00:29:14into one guy picking apart the other you'll see two or three times there again well slipped the right
00:29:18hand reasonably well but offered no retaliation he cannot even come close to think he has a chance
00:29:24of winning if he doesn't do it he's game he's just not in the same class skill-wise as akinwande

00:29:46you proud yourself when you hit him take a half a step back and hit him again
00:29:50all he's gonna do is grab don't let him grab it he can hurt your arm don't let him do that
00:29:59he is an amateur compared to you you understand he's an amateur

00:30:11all right here comes the charge of the light brigade they just told him go do everything you can
00:30:15and watch scott he came in but he came in like a football player he came in like a linebacker trying
00:30:18to stop the uh uh hole you know exactly he's not coming in behind punches you can't win the fight
00:30:23that way you can't come in with your head let's go come on let's go he's just been told henry's been
00:30:28told this is an amateur in here with you a pro come on and that's a little harsh but it's not far from
00:30:35pitchberg stealers could have used scott welch last week yeah don turner said hey you're crowding

00:30:47about he charged acting one he didn't punch backed up and he didn't throw he's got to throw on the way

00:31:05know he's overly conscious about the punches he has some fear of getting it
00:31:08it bobby do you think that welch may be fighting too much on emotion uh in this fight because of
00:31:14the things he told us it could very well be steve that he's just so anxious that he's taking the

00:47:16contact of the night or of the week against second one day you know it's kind of funny in the corner
