00:00:00It's quick work of Mario Milo made at 52 first round up next main event Tommy the Hitman Hearns sets out to defend his title against the Silk Michael Olajadeh two men who've traveled extremely different roads to start him yet both certainly experiencing their share of highs and lows along the way.
00:00:18Thomas Hitman Hearns has left a path of destruction and route to capturing his five world titles. To this day he remains one of boxing's premium attractions because of his crowd pleasing style. As the first man to win four world titles in four different weight divisions his place in history is secure.
00:00:43Right hand down goes Roldan. Left hooks to the body would set that up. He's not going to get up. This one is over. Thomas Hearns has made boxing history.
00:01:01At times Michael the Silk Olajadeh exhibited the styles and skills of a star as he climbed the middleweight ladder of the 1980s.
00:01:09Left hook scores for Olajadeh.
00:01:11And a straight right hand sends Burton down.
00:01:18And down goes Roldan.
00:01:29Hearns has got to give him some respect.
00:01:32Oh grab hold of him which he's not doing.
00:01:34No he's too weak. He has nothing left. He's going to be knocked out.
00:01:37Oh grab hold of him.
00:01:39And Roldan is coming to the night.
00:01:41The Roldan is coming to the night.
00:01:43The Roldan is coming to the night.
00:01:44The Roldan is coming to the night.
00:01:45Marvin Hagler.
00:01:47So close to being knocked out in the first round.
00:01:51Withstood the barrage.
00:01:53Comes back.
00:01:53Knocks him out.
00:01:55In round three.
00:01:59Oh wait by Al Brunner.
00:02:01A late by Bartley.
00:02:02It hurts us down.
00:02:05A lunging right.
00:02:06He's not going to get up Al.
00:02:09He does it's a miracle.
00:02:10Oh big way to hand by him.
00:02:18For the winner.
00:02:19By unanimous decision.
00:02:21And new IBF middleweight champion of the world.
00:02:25Frank the Gold Tank.
00:02:27And the winner by the TKO Iran.
00:02:35Ray Borkley.
00:02:38I did feel weak going into it.
00:02:40I'm going to take a little rest.
00:02:42And believe me I'll be back then.
00:02:50After waiting eight long years for a rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:02:54Thomas Hearns thought he finally would have his revenge.
00:02:57The hitman sent Leonard to the canvas twice during the fight.
00:03:01But could not knock him out.
00:03:03Well.
00:03:04I thought I won earlier rounds.
00:03:08But Ray was able to come back.
00:03:10I can't say nothing negative about Ray.
00:03:13It's a great fight.
00:03:14I gotta give him a drop.
00:03:15But would you expect with two knockdowns to get only a drop?
00:03:18Well.
00:03:19I was hoping for a winner.
00:03:21But.
00:03:22You know how that is.
00:03:25In his last fight.
00:03:26Michael Olajide needed a knockout in the final round to salvage a victory against Dennis Milton.
00:03:33The waning moments of the tenth round found Milton in desperate trouble.
00:03:37And Olajide moving in for the kill.
00:03:39Referee Ken Simmer appeared to stop the contest, granting the Silk a technical knockout.
00:04:01However, the referee explained he thought he heard the bell, signifying the end of the fight.
00:04:06At that time, Milton won the decision.
00:04:08But the final outcome will be decided in New York State Supreme Court.
00:04:12Between battles, Thomas Hearns returns to his Fortress of Solitude to relax and enjoy the spoils of his ring wars.
00:04:24Expensive foreign cars.
00:04:26A personalized swimming pool.
00:04:34And five world championship belts adorn his home.
00:04:37Hearns' accomplishments separate him from most boxers, but there is one thing he has in common with his fellow fighters.
00:04:43The greatest champion of all time.
00:04:44The man that inspired me into boxing.
00:04:47I used to watch this man on TV when I was like eight, nine years old.
00:04:52And I watched him put on a show.
00:04:54He made it look so easy.
00:04:55Like anybody can do it.
00:04:57I said, well, this is what I want to do.
00:04:58This is what I made my mind.
00:04:59This is what I want to do.
00:05:00It's boxing.
00:05:01To me, it seems like Tommy is content and then it seems like he's not content.
00:05:06You know, I watch him.
00:05:07He spends a lot of time, you know, by himself.
00:05:11I think at this stage of his life, he's probably trying to figure out what he's going to do with the rest of his life.
00:05:20Because he realizes that boxing has been a way of his life since he was about 10 years old.
00:05:24And now, you know, we've got to be realistic, you know, that we're coming to the final stages of a great career.
00:05:29And I'll tell you what motivates me and keeps me going in this game.
00:05:33The fact that one thing, this is what makes me happy.
00:05:36I'm happy when I'm out there performing in front of thousands of people, fans.
00:05:42And I'm making sure that they're happy by giving them what they want.
00:05:47I'm giving them a show.
00:05:49And when I can do that, I'm happy.
00:05:51And another thing is that my goal, and I have a very new goal now, it's just to hold more titles than any other fighter that ever held.
00:05:59In the entire career.
00:06:05Kearns has spent a majority of his career attempting to step out of the shadow cast by Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:06:12Perhaps he accomplished that feat in the rematch when he fought Leonard to a draw.
00:06:17He came out on top pretty much as far as I'm concerned.
00:06:25That wasn't enough to quench that thirst, that thirst of recognition, total notoriety.
00:06:33Because all of a sudden, you don't hear about Tommy Hearns, you know, because Tommy Hearns knows that the only way he can really make some noise is to fight me.
00:06:43I prefer going up there and fighting Ray Leonard again and beating him for this fight and getting a decision.
00:06:51But if I have to, I can level with just having to draw with him now.
00:06:56He's always given me problems because of his height, the differential of power.
00:07:02He's a much bigger man.
00:07:03He may weigh in at the same, but he's a much bigger and stronger man than I am.
00:07:08So he always presents a problem.
00:07:10Always.
00:07:12I think he knows that he cannot beat Thomas Hearns.
00:07:14And I know that he's probably not going to fight me again.
00:07:18And based on particularly his last performance and his popularity with the fans for giving us so many exciting fights the last 13 years,
00:07:26that a really superstar victory over Michael Olajide would give him for the first time the whole stage where he wouldn't have to share it with anyone.
00:07:34And I think that coupled with his professional ego, I think will make him give us a great performance on the 28th when he fights.
00:07:43In 1986, Michael Olajide Sr. brought Michael Jr. to New York.
00:07:49Under his father's guidance, the younger Olajide blossomed into a media attraction.
00:07:54A budding star in boxing who was never timid about making a fashion statement inside the ring or out of it.
00:08:02The Olajide's were riding the express to the championship until they got derailed.
00:08:08First by Frank Tate, then by Iran Barkley.
00:08:13If you've lost and come back, you're most definitely a better fighter.
00:08:18You're a better person.
00:08:19You've been on both sides of the tracks.
00:08:22You're harder.
00:08:23You really learn to appreciate things a lot more.
00:08:28After his second defeat, Olajide replaced his father with trainer Hector Oka, who was later joined by Angelo Dundee.
00:08:35It was really, I think it was a growing animosity between my father and I.
00:08:54We weren't communicating as we once did.
00:08:58We were listening to each other.
00:09:00A lot of things were being said that I was taking very seriously.
00:09:04It got under my skin.
00:09:05I get along with a great Hector Oka's trainer and I communicate real well because I could communicate with a trainer if we came from Mars.
00:09:15It wouldn't make no difference.
00:09:16We speak the same language.
00:09:18And Michael likes the language.
00:09:20He likes the communication.
00:09:21He likes the way we're working together.
00:09:23He's a very happy individual.
00:09:25You know what?
00:09:26We're having a lot of fun.
00:09:27This is important because if you have fun at what you do, you can excel at it.
00:09:32See the way the guy's not throwing the jab?
00:09:35We're doing the same thing with Mr. Haines.
00:09:37Same thing.
00:09:39Scourging him.
00:09:40Don't whack with the punch.
00:09:41You lose your balance.
00:09:42Every time you're going to punch, you whack with the punch.
00:09:44Okay.
00:09:45You know?
00:09:46Yeah.
00:09:46When the psychology is right and physically I'm feeling good, I really honestly don't believe there's a middleweight out there that can beat me.
00:09:54I really don't.
00:09:55If I'm quick enough and intelligent enough and hit hard enough in the ring to take care of myself.
00:10:06One of the hottest middleweights in the world, ladies and gentlemen.
00:10:09WBA middleweight champion of the world, Mike McEhalo.
00:10:12Welcome back live to the beautiful Mark G. Edis Arena in Atlantic City.
00:10:15A huge crowd on hand as we close in on the WBO super middleweight title fight.
00:10:20Tommy Hearns versus Michael Olajide.
00:10:22One of the many celebs on hand, interested spectator, Sugar Ray Leonard, who beat Hearns at 81, fought in the hit bands of that controversial draw last year.
00:10:32Leonard sent to the canvas twice by Hearns.
00:10:35Hearns has certainly already established himself, Bernie, as a superstar, but he seems obsessed now with being number one in the world.
00:10:44What do you make of Hearns' situation?
00:10:45Well, I think realistically he sees Tyson's kind of out of the way.
00:10:48Leonard and Hagler kind of on hold, and it's his opportunity to break through to a position he's never really authentically held from 1980 to 1990.
00:10:58Now it's his time.
00:10:59But in order to get there, he must win and win impressively against authentic and good competition.
00:11:06It's a major crossroads fight as far as Michael Olajide is concerned.
00:11:10What kind of a chance do you give him?
00:11:11I give him a chance because we don't know what kind of Tommy Hearns we're going to see tonight.
00:11:15Tommy Hearns' fights are all adventures.
00:11:17He is right at the point where he may be wearing out.
00:11:21He has been a champion for 10 years.
00:11:22He's had heavy campaigning.
00:11:24This could be the night that he's no longer Tommy Hearns.
00:11:27If Olajide takes advantage, if he uses Angelo Dundee's brains in the corner, if, if, if, it could be an interesting evening.
00:11:33There have been some negative signs in terms of Tommy Hearns, the slurred speech pattern and all of that.
00:11:39Do you think he should discontinue fighting?
00:11:41Not at this point.
00:11:42At this point, as long as he's winning, certainly off the performance with Leonard, which a fight that I thought he won, as did most of America,
00:11:48I think he's entitled to go and try to capture that elusive fame that he's been trying to get, to be the number one man in boxing.
00:11:56However, if he can't beat an Elijah Day or if he begins to take beatings, then they're going to have to go back, reassess it,
00:12:02because it really isn't worth it, as we know, to stay on too long and have damage to your brain.
00:12:07Would you like to offer a fight doctor prediction?
00:12:09I think you can't help but go with Tommy Hearns until he proves that that one night he's no longer Tommy Hearns.
00:12:14You have to go with him, but you have to give Elijah Day an outside chance.
00:12:17If he boxes, if he's slick, if he outspeeds him and out-thinks him, we could see an interesting fight.
00:12:22All right, Ferdy, time now for the facts and figures.
00:12:25Let's take a look at the tale of the tape.
00:12:27Tommy Hearns getting set to meet Michael Elijah Day for the WBO Super Middleweight Championship.
00:12:34Hearns is six years older than Elijah Day.
00:12:37Everything else is almost equal.
00:12:39Height, weight, and reach about the same.
00:12:40Elijah Day did have to bulk up a bit.
00:12:42Hearns had to shed some pounds.
00:12:45The WBO rules will be enforced.
00:12:47And these are two fighters who also boast two of the top trainers in the world,
00:12:50Angelo Dundee and Emmanuel Stewart.
00:12:52As we close in on fight time, some final thoughts.
00:12:55I think Elijah Day is going to come out and try to box him and Sonny.
00:13:01And I know for a fact that's the wrong thing to do.
00:13:05Because there's not a box out there today that can out-box me.
00:13:10It may come right off the bat that I'm going to have to go out there and get the respect by hitting him hard.
00:13:14Or I'm going to have to wait three or four rounds.
00:13:16Or maybe I'll have to wait later into the fight.
00:13:18But there'll come a time where I'll have to sit down on my punches and say,
00:13:21Tommy, I'm here.
00:13:22And I'm going to have to show you what I got.
00:13:24I think that Thomas' all-around talent and punching power should prevail.
00:13:29And he should win.
00:13:30And I would love to see a knockout inside of five rounds.
00:13:33But in case it goes to full limit, we're prepared for a time where we just box and go for the decision.
00:13:39But I'd love to see a real dramatic performance.
00:13:41It's a fine line.
00:13:42Greatness, champion, fine line.
00:13:45But when you cross that line, it's dynamite.
00:13:47I think Mike's going to cross that line.
00:13:49He's going to wind up being a world champion.
00:13:51To me, this fights everything.
00:13:52And I can't...
00:13:54I would just hate myself if I went in there and didn't get a chance to show what I was capable
00:14:01of doing and not putting up a good performance.
00:14:04More important to me, I'm an entertainer.
00:14:05I know that.
00:14:06And I have to put on a good show for the people, but I have to put on a good show for myself.
00:14:12Whatever the style may be, I'm going to be ready for it.
00:14:15And I'm aiming to get my best performance at all times.
00:14:20So we're awaiting the main event here at the Mark G. Edis Arena, named in memory of the first
00:14:33president of the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort, good friend of Showtime as well, who died tragically
00:14:38in a helicopter crash last year.
00:14:43Let's go back now and take a look at the Michael Moore-Mario Melo fight just moments ago,
00:14:53which ended in the first round via the knockout route in favor of Michael Moore.
00:14:58Here is round one.
00:15:02They're both left-handers, and you see the power that Melo brings at the very beginning.
00:15:09He can't hit anything with it.
00:15:11He's not hitting anything but arms in the back of the head, and so therefore he wasn't taking
00:15:16Moore out of his game plan, which was to jab very effectively and try to land that straight
00:15:21left lead.
00:15:22Melo is very boastful, as most fighters are, but he was more a matter-of-fact.
00:15:33He had predicted an early knockout in his favor, but it was the other way around, and Moore
00:15:40just overwhelmed Melo.
00:15:42And that was the first really authentic good left-hand that just crunched him, and from
00:15:46there on out, it was just a matter of time.
00:15:48His legs buckled.
00:15:49You know, he comes off of eight straight knockouts, this Melo, and of course, he thought, well,
00:15:53this is going to be another one of those things where it's going to be him or me.
00:15:56He was right.
00:15:56It was him or me, but it was him that left.
00:16:00And Moore was coming off a ninth-round knockout over Marcellus Allen here at Atlantic City back
00:16:04on February the 3rd.
00:16:07You really didn't get to see enough of Moore to appreciate the development, and if he keeps
00:16:13getting these early knockouts, when's he going to develop his style?
00:16:16When's he going to learn?
00:16:16That's one of the problems with a guy that's a big banger.
00:16:19Sooner or later, you've got to go 10 rounds and see what it feels like.
00:16:2212 rounds.
00:16:23And that's when you decide whether you want to be a champion bad enough.
00:16:28How do you think Michael Moore might do against a Virgil Hill?
00:16:32Oh, that would be a very interesting fight.
00:16:35Oh, oh.
00:16:35No, it's a bar.
00:16:36And down went Melo.
00:16:38Four.
00:16:39Five.
00:16:40Moore thought he broke not one, but two ribs.
00:16:42Seven.
00:16:42I don't know if he broke any ribs, but certainly from the way he's writhing, it certainly wasn't
00:16:46in any comfort.
00:16:47He got hit in the ribs.
00:16:48I didn't see it that hard until the replay, and then, of course, you did see a very effective
00:16:51punch right at the floating rib, the kind that does hurt.
00:16:56152 of the first round.
00:16:58Michael Moore knocking out his eighth opponent in the first round of action.
00:17:02We are awaiting the main event.
00:17:06Michael Buffer is getting ready for the free fight festivities.
00:17:11Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome his entrance to the ring.
00:17:15The challenger for the next title about Michael the Silk.
00:17:19Love your day.
00:17:20The Michael Jackson look-alike.
00:17:33Never met a flashy outfit he didn't like, although a little toned down tonight.
00:17:38Even his hair is shorter.
00:17:40Now, he cut his hair because he said he gave him, the judges, the wrong impression every
00:17:45time he got hit.
00:17:46Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:48Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:49Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:50Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:51Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:52Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:53Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:54Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:55Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:56Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:57Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:58Water would spray all over the place.
00:17:59Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:00Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:01Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:02Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:03Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:04Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:05Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:06Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:07Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:08Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:09Water would spray all over the place.
00:18:10Next reaction for Elijah Day.
00:18:30And now, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the entrance of the champion, the Hitman, Thomas Hayden!
00:19:00Dangerous!
00:19:18Dangerous!
00:19:26Dangerous!
00:19:34Dangerous!
00:19:44Dangerous!
00:19:52The head back says we'll see the old Tommy Hearns tonight
00:20:16with a shocking second or third round knockout.
00:20:19He hasn't really had an easy fight, though, since 1986.
00:20:25But as Elijah today is aware, he's dangerous.
00:20:27Welcome to the RGS Arena here at Donald Trump's eighth wonder of the world,

00:23:06Final instructions from referee Tony Orlando.
00:23:10Keep in mind, Hearns, extremely lethal in the early rounds.
00:23:14Elijah Day says he doesn't expect a track meet.
00:23:16He expects a fight.
00:23:19Interesting to see that they're both built about the same,
00:23:21but Tommy's much bulkier, and he looks a little bit taller.
00:23:26Hearns made the weight at 168, worked out in a rule that was not air-conditioned,
00:23:31about 100 degrees to get down to the weight.
00:23:33And Elijah Day had to get up a little bit to 166 and a half.
00:23:36Round one, scheduled for 12 for the WBO Super Middleweight title.
00:23:42Here's Elijah Day trying to box, trying to run this for some of Angelo Dundee's tactics to frustrate Hearns.
00:23:47Hearns is just dancing with him.
00:23:49It's like two people dancing.
00:23:50Hearns anticipates his move, moves over.
00:23:52He has not yet come in to punch.
00:23:53He will assume.
00:23:55Dundee has trained 11 world champions.
00:23:58He hopes Michael Elijah Day will be number 12.
00:24:00Elijah Day looking a little apprehensive.
00:24:04I won't use the word scared.
00:24:06That's not the right word, but he certainly is apprehensive.
00:24:09His reflexes are overly fast, trying to get away from just faith.
00:24:15Elijah Day's best punch is his left hook.
00:24:17Of course, for Hearns, it's the crushing right.
00:24:20Well, somewhere along the line here, Elijah Day better throw something.
00:24:24You cannot win a round just on a bicycle.
00:24:26It's been a disco routine here so far.
00:24:34I think Angelo wants him to while away this round, lose it, frustrate, more than frustrate
00:24:40Hearns to give a little confidence to Elijah Day to say, hey, I'm in here.
00:24:43I've weathered that round.
00:24:44Now let's start to work.
00:24:47Pass the midway mark of round one.
00:24:51Quick hook by Elijah Day.
00:24:53Elijah Day well knows that the hooks have been catching Tommy Hearns and hurting him in previous
00:24:59fights.
00:24:59He tried to lead with a hook.
00:25:01He can't hit Tommy that way.
00:25:03Hearns was trying to bore in on Elijah Day, but Elijah Day easily wiggled away from the
00:25:09corner.
00:25:11Hearns is now cutting him off.
00:25:13When he wants to punch, after he cut him off, you will see action.
00:25:16Make no mistake, Hearns is permitting him to do this.
00:25:22This is not the cleverness of Elijah Day.
00:25:25It's Hearns letting him dance and letting him get away.
00:25:28These are the first opening jabs you've seen, and we're almost through with a round.
00:25:31Nobody's jabbing.
00:25:32Nobody's doing anything but dancing with each other.
00:25:34That was the first big punch thrown, Elijah Day with a miss.
00:25:41Again, a hook, but he tries to land.
00:25:43You cannot find pay dirt with that, without setting it up first.
00:25:47Not with an experience rather like Tommy Hearns.
00:25:49Elijah Day says he won't climb on his bicycle at the start, but he seems to be doing just
00:25:53that.
00:25:54Well, I think he climbed on his motorcycle.
00:25:56He's got more speed than a bicycle here.
00:25:58He's reaching for him when he reaches in, and that can be lethal.
00:26:01Elijah Day just reached in instead of going in with his feet.
00:26:05He reached in with his hands and left his head exposed.
00:26:08Hearns will pick you up that way.
00:26:15Final seconds, round one.
00:26:25The end of an uneventful first round.
00:26:31Okay, you're going to take your time.
00:26:35A man can't run all night.
00:26:36You're going pretty good.
00:26:37Take your time.
00:26:38The only thing he's trying to do is.
00:26:42Cut them out of your foot.
00:26:43Yeah, you cut him.
00:26:44Cut shots.
00:26:44You're going to shoot him so wide.
00:26:45Unless you got him definitely peeing.
00:26:47Don't shoot the wheel shot because they look bad if you miss him.
00:26:50Mainly, just keep cutting him down slowly by following him off.
00:26:52No cut shot here in our face.
00:26:54He'll slow down.
00:26:54The only thing he's breaking that you will.
00:26:56Oh, for him.
00:26:57Okay, because that's all he doesn't look at.
00:26:58That's all he's trying.
00:26:59Just look out for the moment.
00:27:00Patience, okay?
00:27:02There'll be enough.
00:27:03Okay, don't worry about it.
00:27:04Give me my piece.
00:27:06See you, Michael?
00:27:08This guy's made the order.
00:27:09Stay off the rope.
00:27:11Train one way and go the other way.
00:27:12Okay, whatever's open, take one.
00:27:14Take one, two, one, two.
00:27:16Forget him.
00:27:22Is Tommy Hurts made to order, as Angelo Dundee just told Michael Olajone?
00:27:27Well, remember, Angelo Dundee is a master psychologist when it comes to corner work.
00:27:32He's trying to pump confidence into Elijah Day.
00:27:35Just making it through that first round and not getting tagged, I think, gave him a little bit of confidence.
00:27:42The instructions to Hearns were, don't punch unless you really see an opening.
00:27:46Just be patient.
00:27:47It's going to be there.
00:27:48The guy is scared of you, so just take your time.
00:27:50When you cut him off, punch sharp.
00:27:52Don't punch wide.
00:27:53He also made mention of that wide left hook.
00:27:57He's trying to hit you with the left hook.
00:27:58Means they studied the film, you see.
00:28:00Because, after all, that is the punch that has gotten Tommy Hurts in trouble.
00:28:05We're into round two, scheduled for 12.
00:28:09There was a smattering of boos following the dispirited first round.
00:28:13And, of course, Tommy Hurts says he wants to be a showman, a crowd pleaser.
00:28:24So he has to be very sensitive to the crowd.
00:28:27Let's see if he reacts.
00:28:28Except there are times when he's lost the fight because he mixed it up when he should have controlled himself as in the first Leonard fight.
00:28:34And that's what happens to him.
00:28:37And right now, he wants to be a big star and he doesn't want to make any mistakes.
00:28:42He's listening to his corner.
00:28:45He's going to shorten up these punches.
00:28:47He's going to shorten the distance.
00:28:48And he doesn't care if it takes a round or two.
00:28:50Well, Hurts had predicted a first round knockout.
00:28:53He also said he was aiming to give his best performance of all time.
00:28:57And he said this is the biggest fight in the world to him.
00:28:59Let's see if he picks up the pace here in round two.
00:29:06Right now, he's fighting without any caution at all.
00:29:08His left hand is down.
00:29:09He's just playing with Elijah Day.
00:29:11He's a man that has utter disdain for the punching power of Elijah Day.
00:29:21Elijah Day blames his unimpressive performance in his last fight against Dennis Milton in December on a lack of concentration.
00:29:27Can't afford to do that against Hurts.
00:29:32Of course, that was a disputed fight that's still in litigation, but no decision.
00:29:37Now, things are getting a little more interesting.
00:29:41Hurts finally pinned him where he wanted, but Elijah Day fought back off the ropes.
00:29:48Elijah Day known for his grace and craftiness.
00:29:51Excellent foot speed, able to slip away.
00:29:54Well, Elijah Day showed some courage there on the ropes.
00:29:59He was willing to trade with Tommy.
00:30:00It was pretty even.
00:30:02So he's gaining a little bit of enthusiasm, a little bit of confidence.
00:30:07Here's Elijah Day.
00:30:09Tommy Hurts patiently coming on, just like a man that knows he's got a date with a knockout.
00:30:14Another interested spectator alongside Donald Trump, Sugar Ray Leonard.
00:30:36Tought to that controversial draw against Tommy Hearns last June out in Las Vegas.
00:30:47Well, you're the Chinese friend.
00:30:48Left hook.
00:30:49So everything you do, always look in front of him.
00:30:51Always watch him.
00:30:52You're married to cool.
00:30:54Just another time.
00:30:56Throws in the gap in slow.
00:30:58Feel that, too.
00:30:59Feel the rest.
00:31:00Look at the grip.
00:31:01Feel the rest.
00:31:02Some water.
00:31:02Every time.
00:31:07Yes.
00:31:07Don't be long.
00:31:08Both ways.
00:31:09Both ways.
00:31:09Both ways.
00:31:10Okay?
00:31:11Okay.
00:31:11Very good.
00:31:13You're doing good.
00:31:13Just keep it up.
00:31:14Okay.
00:31:15Okay.
00:31:15Very intense look on Michael Elijah Day's face as we head into round three.
00:31:31I think he felt pretty good.
00:31:32He took Tommy's pretty hard shots.
00:31:34It didn't bother him that much.
00:31:35Angelo's preaching.
00:31:36Let these early rounds go by.
00:31:38Don't worry about losing him.
00:31:40So he has lost both first rounds and the second round.
00:31:43Emmanuel Stewart says, I hear Elijah Day is a many-talented fellow.
00:31:50He's written children's books, plays the saxophone and the trombone, interested in acting.
00:31:54He says, we see Hearn sending him back to all of those endeavors.
00:31:58You see, Tommy believes in being a career enhancer.
00:32:03Well, I'll tell you one thing.
00:32:04He is harping on the left hook.
00:32:07Stewart says, keep thinking about the left hook.
00:32:10Don't let him throw that left hook.
00:32:11Oh, there's a pretty snappy left by Thomas Hearns.
00:32:24Hearns inadvertently decked Emmanuel Stewart during a sparring session.
00:32:28And Stewart said, I really would have been embarrassed if he didn't do it with the right.
00:32:33He's remarkably little jabbing in this fight.
00:32:40For a guy that's got such a terrific jab.
00:32:42Then left hook by Tommy Hearns.
00:32:49Tommy's left jab is lethal and he has not been using it.
00:32:52It's just starting to sort of feel him out with the left and starting to throw hooks and right hands to the body.
00:32:58Elijah Day still on that bicycle.
00:33:02And he's apparently not suffered any pain from it.
00:33:07Do you believe this is Hearns' strategy?
00:33:10These are his tactics?
00:33:11Or is this being dictated by the way Elijah Day is fighting?
00:33:15Well, it's a little of both.
00:33:17I mean, obviously, Elijah Day isn't standing there for a punch out.
00:33:20And so it's up to Tommy to cut him off and punch effectively.
00:33:25I think that he's waiting for these early rounds so that the steam goes out of Elijah Day's legs and he's not going to be moving around.
00:33:31At that point, you will see Tommy Hearns trigger off the real ammunition.
00:33:38That punch to the midsection blocked by Hearns.
00:33:41On Elijah Day's part, he's got to start doing some kind of fighting to make Tommy get worried about his suspect, Ken.
00:33:47And he's got to land some bombs up there.
00:33:49He's got to do something.
00:33:50You can't just keep taking punches and running.
00:33:53Elijah Day has yet to connect, but he just slipped that uppercut by Hearns.
00:33:58There's a left jab by Elijah Day that got through.
00:34:01He's got to do much more of that.
00:34:02He's got to put in an effective jab, hook off the jab and run.
00:34:07Hearns opening up just a bit with a combination.
00:34:11Hearns is kind of running out of patience.
00:34:13He's just saying, OK, enough for this.
00:34:15Let's get down to fighting.
00:34:18Round three is heading into the books.
00:34:36We don't want to fight you.
00:34:38I don't want you yet.
00:34:39OK, just do what you're doing.
00:34:41Driving crazy.
00:34:42I want that.
00:34:43You're doing just fine for me.
00:34:44Now keep it up.
00:34:47Not yet.
00:34:48Not yet.
00:34:48You're in brief.
00:34:50You're looking good.
00:34:50You're in brief.
00:34:51You know what I mean?
00:34:52I want you to strength the guy.
00:34:54Use your speed.
00:34:55Be patient.
00:34:58OK?
00:34:59I want plenty of patience from you, son.
00:35:02Got you.
00:35:02Watch how Tommy Hearns uses his left.
00:35:05It sets everything up.
00:35:06A good left jab sets everything up.
00:35:08There's the jab.
00:35:09Before you know what's happening, he triggers off two other punches.
00:35:12And that's what makes it work for Tommy Hearns.
00:35:16There's the left.
00:35:17Now pawing left, but he comes back with a right uppercut and another right hand, which misses.
00:35:21But this is what you'll see more of.
00:35:23His one particular knockout punch is a very weak jab, which brings the other fighters' hands down.
00:35:28And almost immediately triggers the right hand from Tommy.
00:35:31He's knocked three or four people out with that.
00:35:32He'll fake that little punch, and then you'll see the right hand zip in there real fast.
00:35:37Round four, scheduled for 12, the WBO Super Middleweight Championship.
00:35:41The advice from Elijah Day's trainer, Angelo Dundee, was faint him and show patience.
00:35:48The patience Angelo's talking about is he wants these early rounds to go away.
00:35:51He wants Hearns to get so frustrated with this guy's speed that he starts to commit errors.
00:35:56He starts to run in, thinking that the guy's scared of him and starts to get less of it, like he's doing right now.
00:36:01All of these don't be things he's doing right now.
00:36:03That's what Angelo wants.
00:36:05And all of a sudden, he's going to unleash Elijah Day.
00:36:08Now, whether Elijah Day can do anything then remains to be seen, but that's Angelo's strategy right now.
00:36:13Patience, frustrated him.
00:36:16Hearns was beating Iran Barkley, impressively, you recall, before he got knocked out in the third round three fights ago.
00:36:24And he got hurt in all of the fights with a left hook, and Barkley's was a classic way to do it.
00:36:31He also had a war with James Kinchin, which he won, but a lot of folks thought Kinchin won it.
00:36:37Including me.
00:36:39I thought that was a clinch festival of all time.
00:36:42But in the Sugar Ray Leonard fight, he showed tremendous heart, continues to taunt Elijah Day.
00:36:47And that's just what Angelo wants.
00:36:51And that shows he's frustrating, he's playing.
00:36:53Showing no respect for Michael Elijah Day.
00:37:00Now he goes to the big section of the head.
00:37:04And none of that landed.
00:37:06It all landed on the gloves of Elijah Day.
00:37:08And a low blow by Hearn.
00:37:11Everything landing on the gloves and shoulders of Elijah Day.
00:37:14It looks great.
00:37:15It's winning in points, but it's not hurting Elijah Day.
00:37:17But you've got to wonder about Hearn's motivation going in against a fighter like Elijah Day coming off the rematch with Leonard, which was a super high.
00:37:34Elijah Day has yet to connect a solid punch.
00:37:37Oh, a low blow by Elijah Day that really nailed Hearns.
00:37:46And that caught his attention, if nothing else did.
00:37:48What was that?
00:37:49A low blow, and that could be a factor in this fight.
00:37:53All of a sudden.
00:37:54One point.
00:37:55One point.
00:37:56One point.
00:37:57He now has time to recover.
00:38:00A point has been taken off.
00:38:02He has enough time to recover.
00:38:04A good time.
00:38:04Five minutes.
00:38:04Three, four minutes.
00:38:05He's got up to five minutes.
00:38:11The ref has just said, take your time.
00:38:12Make sure you're all right.
00:38:16You okay?
00:38:20You okay?
00:38:21You okay?
00:38:22Yeah, Mike.
00:38:22You okay?
00:38:24Okay.
00:38:25Time in.
00:38:26Let's go.
00:38:27Well, if he was frustrated before, now he's frustrated and mad.
00:38:34A combination that does not bode well for Elijah Day.
00:38:37On the other hand, that does take something out of you.
00:38:39I don't care what kind of rest you got and what kind of point was taken off.
00:38:42It takes something out of steam of your punches, and it weakens your legs.
00:38:48Whether it was intentional or unintentional doesn't matter.
00:38:53It's the same effect.
00:38:54Absolutely.
00:38:55Final seconds, round four.
00:39:03And Hurst pouring in.
00:39:06And Olajini off balance.
00:39:07He's going to punch it up, Michael.
00:39:12Okay?
00:39:12Keep him up.
00:39:14No more now.
00:39:15No more now.
00:39:17No more now.
00:39:18All right, no more now.
00:39:19All right, no more now.
00:39:21You got more fun for you.
00:39:23No.
00:39:23All right, no more.
00:39:24Sorry, sorry.
00:39:25Don't call me the presentation.
00:39:26You break it up down, you don't get done.
00:39:27The world can't go much more than about three more rounds, because you have to pick up the pace on him.
00:39:31Okay?
00:39:31Pick up the pace on him a little bit more.
00:39:33And you're giving him a little too much time to play.
00:39:35You start moving in tight on him, even if he's not punching, trying to kick up the tempo a lot.
00:39:39Hands up good, though.
00:39:40Let's take a look at that unintentional low blow, but that is what you call a low blow by any definition.
00:39:46And that, ladies and gentlemen, hurts and takes the entire steam out of your legs.
00:39:54Punch is weak in another view of it.
00:39:56It's unintentional, obviously unintentional, but nonetheless, the effect is the same.
00:40:01Round five scheduled for 12.
00:40:11The low blow really taking the starch out of Tommy Hearns for about a minute, a minute and a half.
00:40:17Let's see how he reacts here in the next round.
00:40:19Interesting.
00:40:19Angelo is saying, give me one or two more rounds of that.
00:40:23And in the other corner, Emmanuel Stewart is saying he can't do this for more than another one or two rounds.
00:40:28Then we're going to have a fight.
00:40:29So, both corners taking the same for different reasons.
00:40:37Interesting drop step move by Tommy Hearns.
00:40:46Hearns continues to be the aggressor.
00:40:49Angelo Dundee feels that when you've had as many fights over as long a period as Tommy Hearns,
00:40:54his legs don't stand up in the last half of the fight, whereas Elijah days will.
00:40:58And that's what you're seeing here, a gamble.
00:41:00You're seeing a gamble that Tommy's legs will not stand up.
00:41:02You saw a little trip a moment ago, but nothing around.
00:41:05That's an indication legs are going.
00:41:07We're little, but nonetheless.
00:41:09Oh, strong shot.
00:41:11Strong body shot by Tommy Hearns.
00:41:14Hearns with an explosion to the midsection of Elijah Day.
00:41:17Now, combination to the head.
00:41:20But not hitting anything but those blocks.
00:41:22Now that was a good shot by Tommy Hearns, and it landed on Elijah Day.
00:41:26A solid lunging left by Hearns.
00:41:31And that was flush on the face.
00:41:32There was a nifty right by Hearns.
00:41:35A crisp right cross that made it through to the face.
00:41:38But good defense by Elijah Day.
00:41:39Give him credit.
00:41:40He's avoiding most of these punches.
00:41:42They're either landing on gloves or in the air.
00:41:50Counterpunch by Elijah Day.
00:41:51That does no damage.
00:41:53That one got through.
00:41:54The left by Elijah Day.
00:41:56Elijah Day putting more steam in his punches.
00:41:58He's got to do something to keep Hearns off for Hearns
00:42:00and keep coming like a locomotive.
00:42:02Gaining speed and getting cautious.
00:42:04Hearns unfazed by Elijah Day.
00:42:06Hearns fighting a strange fight
00:42:12and that he's doing a lot of perky-jerky show business
00:42:15stuff like that right there.
00:42:16For no reason at all.
00:42:17That's not going to make him a superstar.
00:42:29Nonsense.
00:42:29All of that's nonsense as you get to what?
00:42:31Right there.
00:42:33Oh, that one really backed Elijah Day up.
00:42:37Those are effective body punches.
00:42:39Elijah Day covering up nicely,
00:42:41but those punches to the side
00:42:42are taking an awful lot out of Elijah Day.
00:42:46One of those solid deliveries
00:42:48and Elijah Day could go down.
00:42:49And Hurst finishing strong.
00:43:09Round five is history.
00:43:10How do we go for this mother?
00:43:21Catching the stuff on my arms.
00:43:23Catch everything.
00:43:24Yeah, but I want you to make him pay.
00:43:25Yeah, I want you to make him pay.
00:43:27You know what I mean?
00:43:28Okay.
00:43:29You don't got too much, no, huh?
00:43:31Good.
00:43:32This guy is ready for you if you want.
00:43:34I mean, this guy ain't got too much.
00:43:37Let's watch the body work by Hurst.
00:43:39He sets it up with a nice strike.
00:43:41Nice straight right hand right there.
00:43:42Making Elijah, they go down and cover up.
00:43:44And here comes the body attack.
00:43:47Hurst will not let you get off the hook.
00:43:49Once he gets you in that position
00:43:50where you're bending and getting away from,
00:43:52he steps in and launches that body attack.
00:43:54Bunch of punches.
00:43:57To the side.
00:43:58That's the one that hurts.
00:43:59That's the one that hurts.
00:44:00And that's what takes the legs out from Elijah.
00:44:02On the other hand, Angelo says,
00:44:04now we step it up.
00:44:05And the fighter said, huh?
00:44:08What?
00:44:09Round six, scheduled for 12.
00:44:12Dundee told Elijah Day, make him pay.
00:44:15This is a lot of first, third fight
00:44:18with revered corner man Angelo Dundee.
00:44:20He interestingly replaced Michael's father,
00:44:23Michael Elijah Day Sr.,
00:44:24said to be some friction between father and son,
00:44:27although Dundee feels that Michael Jr.
00:44:29still respects and cares about his dad.
00:44:32Dundee in the corner with Hector Ruka
00:44:34guiding the path of Michael Elijah Day.
00:44:39Elijah Day felt that his father
00:44:41was making him fight a style of fight
00:44:43that wasn't him.
00:44:44Angelo's a master of taking a fighter
00:44:46and using what he's got
00:44:47and making him better with it.
00:44:49We're certainly seeing a better Elijah Day
00:44:51right now in defense and strategy,
00:44:53but he's not winning this fight.
00:44:54He's losing every round.
00:44:55It's 50 to 44, having lost a point
00:44:57in the fourth round for low blows.
00:45:00Unofficially, I might scorecard, of course,
00:45:02but I cannot see a round that you can give Elijah Day.
00:45:04He's been fighting in retreat
00:45:05and not gaining a round.
00:45:07This is Elijah Day's third trip up the ladder
00:45:09against a huge name,
00:45:11losing to the likes of Frank Tate
00:45:13and I ran Barkley in previous bouts.
00:45:20Credit should be given to his defensive style.
00:45:23Many of those punches are not getting in
00:45:25that Hearns is throwing,
00:45:26but you can't win fights
00:45:28just picking off punches on your gloves.
00:45:29Hearns has simmered down his routine.
00:45:33Less taunting and more business-like fashion
00:45:36now in round six.
00:45:38Midway through.
00:45:40I think both corners are about through with waltzing
00:45:42and are getting down into the real fighting.
00:45:45They want to get this thing over with now.
00:45:47Tommy's not playing.
00:45:49He's standing right in front of him.
00:45:50Now he wants to go at it.
00:45:51Fading the Bolo punch, too, is Hearns.
00:45:58Landed right there with the right.
00:46:01Elijah able to cover up on the left.
00:46:11Oh, nice job.
00:46:12Left jab by Tommy Hearns.
00:46:14Never forget that Tommy started as a boxer
00:46:16and he was a very, very fine boxer
00:46:18until he found out he could punch that hard.
00:46:21Crushing overhand right by Hearns.
00:46:28Elijah showing he can take some punishment.
00:46:34And trading stiff jabs now.
00:46:38Elijah taking it.
00:46:39I'll tell you what,
00:46:40not flinching much at some of those explosive punches.
00:46:43And he's coming back.
00:46:44Another low blow by Elijah and he got one back
00:46:47and that one was intentional.
00:46:49Hearns said,
00:46:49you're going to do that, my friend.
00:46:50You're going to get some back.
00:46:51Oh, he's looking to be able to score in that department.
00:46:56Well, there's a whole university's worth of experience
00:46:59in Tommy Hearns' head.
00:47:01You just don't fool around with experience.
00:47:09And that'll do it for round six.
00:47:11How are you doing?
00:47:19How are you doing?
00:47:21How about let the right hands go a little bit?
00:47:24What's our time do?
00:47:25I don't know.
00:47:25I'm not going to let them go.
00:47:26I don't go.
00:47:26Keep shooting something that happens.
00:47:28You're on three left hooks in a row.
00:47:29No good.
00:47:30The man is catching most of the hooks in a row.
00:47:32They're not working.
00:47:33He's laying out something I'm not working to change up.
00:47:35So it changes some difference.
00:47:36So I put more right hands to the real grab.
00:47:37They're trying to catch him on top of it.
00:47:39Not to let right hands go.
00:47:41No right hands.
00:47:43Everything is working.
00:47:44Let the right hands go.
00:47:45And after every right hand, come on back with the left hand.
00:47:47Okay?
00:47:48Let the right hand go.
00:47:49This is the time we let it go.
00:47:50We're over the halfway point.
00:47:51And he's slowing down and fighting a little bit more.
00:47:53But come on back with your effort back.
00:47:54Round seven scheduled for 12.
00:48:10The air Udyte, Emanuel Stewart, very calmly instructing Tommy Hearns.
00:48:17He's like a professor teaching his favorite student.
00:48:20He says, those left hooks to the body aren't landing.
00:48:23They're landing on his arms.
00:48:24And he's catching them.
00:48:25So go right handed this time.
00:48:26I want you to go right handed more.
00:48:28Let's see what Tommy does when he goes right handed.
00:48:30He goes right handed.
00:48:31He can get hit by left hooks.
00:48:32And that's what he's his weakness.
00:48:35Hearns dancing around again.
00:48:39Playing with Olajide.
00:48:40Olajide, a right hand by Hearns that landed.
00:48:48Olajide is seven to two underdog.
00:48:56And Hearns will collect a cool 1.6 million for this fight.
00:49:04Emanuel Stewart wanted Hearns to step up the action.
00:49:07Go right handed.
00:49:07And a cool Olajide, I haven't seen all that right handed punching.
00:49:13That left only made Hearns smile.
00:49:17If it lands a little bit slower, it's lower.
00:49:19He won't be smiling that much.
00:49:21Olajide beginning to load up on those punches.
00:49:25Again, a low blow by Hearns.
00:49:28Keep him up.
00:49:28Let's keep him up.
00:49:29Come on.
00:49:29Let's go.
00:49:30And the warning from referee Tony Orlando.
00:49:35I misspoke.
00:49:35That low blow was by Olajide, received by Hearns.
00:49:43Past the midway mark, round seven.
00:49:48Olajide now standing in much closer.
00:49:50He's within range of that rifle jab.
00:49:53A series of ferocious left jabs by Hearns, connecting.
00:49:59And almost a low blow there by Olajide.
00:50:01But that was on the side of that really didn't have anything for a couple.
00:50:08Good jab.
00:50:09Olajide.
00:50:11Back comes Hearns with another good one.
00:50:17Olajide getting brave.
00:50:19Boy, is he within cannon shot.
00:50:21Hearns bobbing and weaving and firing that shotgun jab.
00:50:32This is the first time that Olajide is not on a bicycle, standing right in front of him, trading jabs, apparently waiting for his opportunity to throw something hard.
00:50:40Or receive something hard.
00:50:44He's very close now, is Olajide.
00:50:52Left hook by Hearns.
00:50:54Sneaking in.
00:50:57It'll be interesting to see whether Angelo puts him back on that bicycle when he goes on a corner, because he is not doing very well here.
00:51:03And that'll do it for the seventh round.
00:51:14And listen to the crowd.
00:51:17Boy.
00:51:21We can get a little closer, a little closer.
00:51:24But when you block, when you block, you've got to nail it.
00:51:26You've got to nail a counter in there.
00:51:28You know what I mean, Mike?
00:51:29Short shot.
00:51:30Don't throw a line shot.
00:51:31Okay?
00:51:31Spin it.
00:51:33Okay, now, son.
00:51:34Come on.
00:51:35Drop it, look, speed.
00:51:37Take it right to him, okay?
00:51:38Let's go to work, okay?
00:51:41Speed, speed, speed.
00:51:42And when you take it to him, speed.
00:51:44He's breathing hard already.
00:51:45Well, according to Ferdie's score sheet, he hasn't gone to work to this point.
00:51:49That's what you call a big gap.
00:51:50Angelo's ready to outwit and slow down Hearns.
00:51:56But Hearns is not complying, because Hearns looks like he's just as strong as he was.
00:51:59The two-point round was because of the low blow, you recall?
00:52:04That was in the fourth round.
00:52:08Correct.
00:52:08Now, it's the eighth round, scheduled for 12.
00:52:12And you heard the words of Angelo Dundee, almost on cue.
00:52:15Yep.
00:52:16Get in closer and punch harder and be faster.
00:52:18You know, I've been watching this thing now for seven rounds.
00:52:21I've been meaning to ask you, why do you think he's got the eight ball written on his navel?
00:52:24I mean, that is not by, in any culture that I know of, mean good luck.
00:52:29Behind the eight ball is usually a bad place to be.
00:52:31Sounds like the story of my career.
00:52:34Oh, nice hook by Elijah Day.
00:52:36That's a left hook.
00:52:37That was well advertised to her, Tommy.
00:52:43Nice strong jabs by Tommy, indicating that that hook did not do the damage.
00:52:48That left was slipped by Tommy Hearns.
00:52:57While Elijah Day has an eight, Hearns has a five.
00:53:00We know that means five world titles.
00:53:08Solid left, but it hit off the shoulder of Hearns.
00:53:12Maybe the eighth, the eighth is for the eighth round, signifying this will be it for Elijah Day.
00:53:29A couple more of those and it will be it.
00:53:33Elijah Day no longer seems apprehensive.
00:53:36Seems like he's ready to, he believes, Angelo.
00:53:38He's in there, he's ready to step up the action.
00:53:40But it's Tommy Hearns who's doing the work.
00:53:44Hearns continues to dominate, overwhelming Elijah Day.
00:53:52Boy, Hearns doubling up beautifully on the left.
00:53:56And left jab, powerful, followed by a light, beautiful combination by Hearns.
00:54:02Boy, if there's anybody that looks prettier, punching than Tommy Hearns, I don't know who it is.
00:54:06Hearns stepping up the pace, the right cross, a glancing glow.
00:54:10Didn't have full impact.
00:54:12He's just pecking away at Elijah Day's head.
00:54:15Well, he's starting to get to Elijah Day now.
00:54:17Some of those are landing flush, and there are strong punches.
00:54:21Hearns trying to put on a drive to get this over with on the eighth round.
00:54:25Elijah Day still there, trying to throw that hook.
00:54:27There's two good, three good shots by Elijah Day.
00:54:30A very game, Michael Elijah Day able to land.
00:54:40He's standing up to Tommy Hearns.
00:54:41He's not winning the rounds, but at least he's getting his shots in, which is more than he did the first five rounds.
00:54:46The silk just walked in to one.
00:54:52Another effective round for Hearns.
00:54:54Hearns with a right, but it did connect.
00:55:01Really mixing up his repertoire now, Tommy Hearns.
00:55:04And that'll do it for round eight.
00:55:11A lot of action, but mostly by Hearns.
00:55:18I do not like that.
00:55:19You're doing good for all of this.
00:55:20Nobody wants to see that shape.
00:55:22Just get to be in a good solid fight and let the right hand go.
00:55:25You go bang, bang, bang to the body, and then pull out.
00:55:28Hey, just like on the other back, then you'd rather want to.
00:55:31Well, that's when you should knock guys out, because you used to study guys and jump at them when they would be in a relaxed mood.
00:55:36You bang, bang, and you pull out, relax.
00:55:37Pull out, and then let it go right away.
00:55:40Here, I got it.
00:55:42The guy's fighting you more now.
00:55:43No more showbos.
00:55:44Just get your hands up and just be a solid, busy fighter now.
00:55:48Okay, man, thank you.
00:55:49This guy's ready for you.
00:55:50Back him up, back him up.
00:55:51When he opens up, nail him, okay?
00:55:53You defense more than make him pay.
00:55:55Let's make him pay.
00:55:55Come on, baby.
00:56:01That's that left hook that Elijah Day's been...
00:56:03He got stunned by looking at so many films of left hook.
00:56:07And, of course, Hearns never pardons.
00:56:09He comes back with a boxing lesson, and before you know it, you've missed, and he's landed three or four shots.
00:56:14And, therefore, he's ahead 80 to 71 on my scorecards.
00:56:17But Elijah Day has been making a fight of it in the last two or three rounds.
00:56:21Round nine scheduled for 12.
00:56:23It's gone longer than most people thought it would.
00:56:26Of course, you heard the voice of reason in the Hearns corner, Emmanuel Stewart, who really election of it.
00:56:31There goes Elijah Day.
00:56:32Two, three, four, seven, six, seven, eight.
00:56:39He gets up on eight.
00:56:42Now, the bad news is there's too much time in this round.
00:56:44Two minutes and 25, and back to the ropes.
00:56:47Goes Elijah Day to weather the storm.
00:56:49Can he do it?
00:56:50I don't think so.
00:56:51Hearns sticking in for the finish.
00:56:55Storming!
00:56:56Smothering Olajide.
00:57:04Hearns looking very, very amateurish going up.
00:57:08And Olajide has weathered most of those punches in the land.
00:57:13Hearns would have done better to stand back and punch with his usual clarity in Christmas
00:57:17as he tried to smother him.
00:57:20The crowd urging Hearns on.
00:57:22Olajide weathered that by just good defense.
00:57:25Keeping his head.
00:57:28That's where he's going to get knocked out when he fights from distance.
00:57:31From distance, Hearns will knock him out.
00:57:34Can Michael Olajide survive a knockdown here in the night?
00:57:40Hearns looks like he may have punched himself out in that last plurie.
00:57:44Hearns is breathing hard.
00:57:46He tried too hard.
00:57:48There's still a minute and 20.
00:57:49If Olajide can weather this a little bit, Olajide kind of motioned and said,
00:57:53Come on, come on.
00:57:54He's talking to Hurd.
00:57:56He's telling him to come on.
00:57:58Oh, what a shot by him.
00:58:02A wild left by Olajide.
00:58:04That nearly tagged Hurd.
00:58:05Hurd's smiling.
00:58:07Here's where he gets knocked out in the middle of the ring.
00:58:10With his ring, with his roots.
00:58:11To support him, Olajide has a chance out here.
00:58:15If Tommy chooses to fight, he can knock him out here.
00:58:20But Tommy looks like he's punched himself out.
00:58:22And now Olajide trying to come back with 40 seconds left in the night.
00:58:30Not the greatest spot in the world for Hearns on the ropes.
00:58:35And not the greatest place in the world for Olajide in the middle of the ring.
00:58:38As careless in his punches he is right now, but he's coming off.
00:58:41Now the crowd getting behind Olajide.
00:58:43What a heart on Olajide.
00:58:47Tommy just waiting for an opening.
00:58:50Punching off the ropes is Hurd.
00:58:53Final seconds, round nine.
00:58:55All Olajide needs is to hold on a little bit and get that whole minute's rest.
00:59:00He should get into a clinch here.
00:59:04What a finish to the ninth.
00:59:06Oh!
00:59:07A perloucist left by Olajide.
00:59:09And they continue to punch after the bell.
00:59:11Oh!
00:59:26Get that on.
00:59:29Get that on.
00:59:30You ain't even breathing.
00:59:31He's ready to go.
00:59:32Let's go to work.
00:59:33He's ready to go.
00:59:34The guy wants it.
00:59:35If he leaves, you got the ropes.
00:59:37Hit him here.
00:59:38He's so fragile.
00:59:39That's all.
00:59:40He had it.
00:59:40All right.
00:59:40Let's take a look at that knockdown.
00:59:45Tommy Hearns loading up that left hook.
00:59:47You watch this.
00:59:48He's got that right arm cooked, and there it goes.
00:59:51That's what Stewart has been telling him.
00:59:52Throw the right.
00:59:53Let's take another look at it, and you can see how he set it up.
00:59:56This is what Stewart's been telling him.
00:59:57Set it up with those lazy lefts.
00:59:59Then trigger off the right hand.
01:00:00There it goes.
01:00:01But he got up, he survived, and he came back.
01:00:04And that was incredible to me.
01:00:06The strength with which he came back at the end of that round was really surprising.
01:00:13What a great comeback in the ninth round by Olajaday.
01:00:17Round 10, scheduled for 12 for the WBO Super Middleweight Championship.
01:00:22Olajaday comes out, wing it.
01:00:24And he hits Hurds, and Hurds is holding on.
01:00:27He hits Hurds with the right hand, and Hurds is holding on.
01:00:31And Joe said, now he's ready.
01:00:32Now he'll go after him.
01:00:34I'm with him.
01:00:35Could it be an upset in the making?
01:00:40He would need a knockout to win.
01:00:42He's so far behind that he can only knock him out.
01:00:45But let me tell you, if this kid's trying, he's going for the knockout.
01:00:49A left jab by Olajaday that snapped Hurds' head back.
01:00:58And now it's Olajaday chasing, and Hurds falling back in retreat.
01:01:03Olajaday showing tremendous heart, which is a trademark of Tommy Hurd.
01:01:09And now it's Olajaday, and he's going for the right hand to go, that's what knocked him down, and that's what he wants.
01:01:27That lazy left, and then that bottom, that right hand, right there.
01:01:29Olajaday still clever in defense, holding those gloves up.
01:01:41Tommy's legs, Olajaday, look at his legs.
01:01:47They are wobbly.
01:01:48These are the legs of a veteran who's had too many belts.
01:01:5331-year-old Tommy Hurds may be in trouble here against the 25-year-old Olajaday.
01:01:59Olajaday must attack an all-out.
01:02:01It's got a gamble, but he's got a chance.
01:02:04For the first time in the evening, he's got a chance.
01:02:11Rob now reacting to anything Olajaday throws.
01:02:15Because it's Olajaday on the attack.
01:02:18Not Hurds.
01:02:19And Hurds' legs are strange.
01:02:20Hearns has that worried look.
01:02:26But he has to throw that right hand, and he's got to catch Olajaday.
01:02:31Olajaday's been catching everything on his gloves.
01:02:42Solid combination there by Tommy Hurds.
01:02:46Olajaday may be on the way to winning the first round of this fight that he's won.
01:02:50A roundhouse miss by Olajaday.
01:02:57That was a Reggie Jackson out of the ballpark punch.
01:03:01Going for it all.
01:03:03Final seconds of the 10th.
01:03:15Now what's going through Sugar Ray Leonard's mind right now?
01:03:19Maybe I should fight him again.
01:03:22You're strong.
01:03:23You've got to use your power.
01:03:24You understand?
01:03:26Set down.
01:03:26Just shoot your power.
01:03:27Set down on the right hand.
01:03:28Guard the left foot right hand.
01:03:30But dig down in the toes.
01:03:33It's 11th round right here.
01:03:34You're not going down the stretch.
01:03:35You've got to fight one.
01:03:37Some power would make a man back off from you.
01:03:39I don't want all this.
01:03:40Everything is too loose here.
01:03:41Set down on it.
01:03:42You understand?
01:03:43Set your box to the right left.
01:03:44Bang, bang.
01:03:45And blow it up on the shot.
01:03:46Even if it goes on his hand, it's going to have to give him another risk.
01:03:50Give him some water.
01:03:51Concentrate, Tommy.
01:03:51He's going for broke.
01:03:52He's throwing wild punches.
01:03:53You've got to concentrate, son.
01:03:55Give me some more water.
01:03:56Give me some more water.
01:03:56Give me some more water.
01:03:57All right.
01:03:58Second shot.
01:03:58Courtney's score sheet.
01:04:01Finally a round for Olajide.
01:04:06But Olajide coming on strong here in the latter part of the fight.
01:04:10Round 11 scheduled for 12.
01:04:12And from what we have seen, Hearns needs a leg transfusion.
01:04:15He needs another pair of legs here.
01:04:18That does not bode well for him in big fights.
01:04:22Of course, Olajide looking for the KO to pull this one out.
01:04:26That was Angelo's gamble.
01:04:29And Angelo's gamble may pay off, but at least the kid has given a tremendous shot.
01:04:34I refer to Olajide, the silk who has given it his all in the last four or five rounds.
01:04:39Of his 27 wins, 19 by knockout.
01:04:42Olajide, the silk who has given it his all in the last four or five rounds.
01:04:57Going out!
01:04:58Going out!
01:05:01Going out!
01:05:02Well, you have to wonder if Olajide has run out of some steam after the last two rounds.
01:05:06He can't just come in wide open.
01:05:08On Hearns, he's got to wait for an opportunity.
01:05:11One good punch, it makes him wobbly, and then he can attack.
01:05:15Well, it looks like Olajide is measuring Hearns out for that one thunderous punch.
01:05:22But it, there it went, but it missed.
01:05:25Hearns is controlling him with a jab.
01:05:27Good right hand by Hearns.
01:05:33Able to battle the pesky Olajide off.
01:05:40And off of this, you've got to wonder, would this guy, could Hearns make it against Hursley Hill?
01:05:45Could he get up to the light heavyweights?
01:05:47I'm not so sure on this performance.
01:05:50That one scraped the back of Hearns.
01:05:52Combination by Hearns.
01:05:53And Olajide is in trouble.
01:05:55He was wobbled.
01:06:07And Hearns pulling it off.
01:06:09Olajide did well on the ropes.
01:06:11He should retreat to the ropes and cover up like he did before.
01:06:15Oh, nice hook.
01:06:16Nice hook by Olajide.
01:06:18What a counter punch by Olajide when it looked like he was really in trouble.
01:06:21He's getting pummeled and he still had the sense to get off a good hook.
01:06:25And look at Tommy, he went back.
01:06:27Tommy does not like those hooks.
01:06:29A very poised Michael Olajide hanging tough.
01:06:37About 30 seconds left in the 11th.
01:06:40Tommy showing signs of great weariness.
01:06:42Now there's another good two shots.
01:06:44But Tommy back again with two good shots.
01:06:46These guys are just trading.
01:06:49Oh.
01:06:50A war the last few rounds.
01:06:58Final 10 seconds of the 11th.
01:07:02Again a wild, frantic miss by Olajide.
01:07:06Olajide comes back at LaVelle.
01:07:1211 in the books.
01:07:27This is your round.
01:07:28You got to get out and do something, okay?
01:07:29Give me some water.
01:07:34Give me some water.
01:07:35You got three minutes.
01:07:36Don't lose concentration, Tommy.
01:07:38If you do get it, tie your hand up.
01:07:41Keep your hands up, baby.
01:07:43Keep your hands up.
01:07:43There ain't no more.
01:07:44Don't save nothing.
01:07:46Let's let it all hang out.
01:07:47Block punch.
01:07:48Block punch.
01:07:49Okay?
01:07:50We ain't got no more.
01:07:51He's breathing real quick.
01:07:54Let's go.
01:07:56Give it to him.
01:07:57He's breathing real quick.
01:07:57Let's go, let's go.
01:07:59Back to the moment.
01:08:00Chase his shot.
01:08:01This is the 12th.
01:08:02And final round of running to the wall
01:08:05for Michael Olajide and Helen Perry.
01:08:08Final round.
01:08:09Nobody thought it would go this far.
01:08:1112th and final round.
01:08:12Get back.
01:08:13Get back.
01:08:13Get back.
01:08:14So much for the people who thought Olajide
01:08:15was just a piece of salt
01:08:17that was going to come and get torn in half here.
01:08:19It's youth and strength
01:08:21and the intelligence in the corner of Angelo Dundee
01:08:23willing to gamble,
01:08:24willing to make a game plan
01:08:26that would wear out Hurts.
01:08:30Hurts back on his bicycle.
01:08:32Lunging with the jab.
01:08:34We've yet to see the right here
01:08:35in this round.
01:08:37Another good hook by the silk.
01:08:41Olajide certainly has to knock Hurts out
01:08:44for the fight.
01:08:55Bouncing around as if those legs
01:08:57weren't old and tired.
01:08:59That happens to these guys.
01:09:01Run around.
01:09:01It looks like they're going to cave in.
01:09:02The next round,
01:09:03they're bouncing like Muhammad Ali.
01:09:04You cannot deny that he's been
01:09:10one of the great boxes in the 80s.
01:09:12He's certainly never given you a go
01:09:13and quite has Tommy Hurts.
01:09:15He's made this one interesting
01:09:17because he couldn't put away the silk
01:09:18and the silk on Craven came off.
01:09:20And you have to wonder what this does
01:09:24to his proclamation that he'd like to be
01:09:27number one in the world
01:09:29with Mike Tyson dethroned by Buster Douglas.
01:09:32And now he says that Sugar Ray Leonard
01:09:33is boring.
01:09:35So it makes you wonder.
01:09:36He needs a very big fight
01:09:38against a very good fighter
01:09:39like Sugar Ray or Hagler and a win.
01:09:41A fight like this does not make him
01:09:43a superstar or a great,
01:09:45a bit better than average.
01:09:51The silk has been a disappointment
01:09:53in this 10 rounds
01:09:54as Tommy bounces and shows
01:09:56his defensive boxing skills.
01:09:58The silk cannot attack
01:09:59and it's eating jabs.
01:10:01Once again,
01:10:02the measure of greatness and experience
01:10:03of Tommy the Hitman Hurts.
01:10:05He can box and he can punch.
01:10:07And what a way to break in this new arena.
01:10:09Nobody thought it would be this interesting
01:10:11in the main event.
01:10:14Well, when you have a strategist in the corner,
01:10:16the first part was boring,
01:10:18but then when the strategy pays off,
01:10:19here comes Olazade.
01:10:24Olazade trying to pressure Hurts
01:10:25in the corner,
01:10:27trying to pin him in.
01:10:31The referee giving Hurts
01:10:33the benefit of a great big break.
01:10:35He should follow him
01:10:36right into the ropes
01:10:36in Olazade.
01:10:38He has not punched.
01:10:39There's that left jab
01:10:40by Hurts again.
01:10:43While he's in there,
01:10:43he should punch now.
01:10:45He should go at it.
01:10:47Try everything right there
01:10:48when he's not moving.
01:10:49Well, this is it.
01:10:49He's got to go for broke.
01:10:51Final 20 seconds of the fight.
01:10:52Well...
01:10:54And the crowd showing its appreciation.
01:11:21A lot of action.
01:11:22A lot of action for a fight
01:11:24that's basically 118 to 180.
01:11:26It was a fight in which one fighter
01:11:27dominated the other from the scorecard,
01:11:29but it didn't prove that way.
01:11:31The strategy was to blow those early rounds
01:11:33and come back strong at the end,
01:11:34which made for a very interesting
01:11:36final part of the fight.
01:11:37It also showed us several things.
01:11:39It showed us that Tommy Hurts,
01:11:41while he was to be a large superstar,
01:11:43cannot be with a performance like that.
01:11:45He's considered a terrific fighter.
01:11:47He is a great fighter
01:11:48because he's Tommy Hurts.
01:11:50He survived from 1980 to 1990
01:11:52in five championships.
01:11:53He is by any definition a great fighter,
01:11:57but he's wearing out.
01:11:58And it's coming up to one of these nights
01:12:00when he's no longer going to be Tommy Hurts.
01:12:02He's going to be in there with somebody strong,
01:12:03and that will be Tommy Hurts.
01:12:05Tonight, it wasn't Elijah Day,
01:12:07but it almost was.
01:12:08And he could certainly lose those showboat tactics.
01:12:11Well, I think that's part of his mistaken notion
01:12:14that in order to be like Sugar Ray Leonard,
01:12:17in order to be these guys,
01:12:19you've got to play
01:12:20and you've got to get the people's attention.
01:12:22You don't need it when you're as great as he is.
01:12:23He's a great boxer.
01:12:24He's a great puncher.
01:12:26Let's take a look at the only knockdown again,
01:12:27again, that patented Tommy Hurts left
01:12:31and then that's lightning right hand.
01:12:33Wow, there it comes.
01:12:34And when you get that,
01:12:35everything short jerks
01:12:37and that last little punch on the way down
01:12:39was not kosher.
01:12:40They can't penalize him
01:12:41because he really was punching on the way,
01:12:43but it's not necessary to punch on the way down.
01:12:46The guy's on the way down.
01:12:47Watch the right hand land flush.
01:12:49I mean, that should have knocked him out.
01:12:52Well, he not only survived the round,
01:12:53he came on strong in the final rounds.
01:12:55And that's, I think,
01:12:56because Tommy went so crazy
01:12:58at the uncharacteristic like he is the hitman.
01:13:01He knows how to put your way
01:13:02and he went sort of amateurish
01:13:03and swarmed instead of punch.
01:13:06That's a clear, clear shot.
01:13:07Three different shots.
01:13:08I think we all agree
01:13:09he did get knocked down by a right hand.
01:13:11So we're awaiting the decision
01:13:17which should almost certainly go
01:13:23in favor of veteran Tommy Hearns.
01:13:25Michael Buffer, the ring announcer,
01:13:27has the call.
01:13:28Ladies and gentlemen,
01:13:29here is the official scoring
01:13:30from the Trump Taj Mahal
01:13:31in Atlantic City.
01:13:33Samuel Conde scores the belt 120 to 107.
01:13:39Cesar Ramos scores at 119 to 110.
01:13:42And Vinny Brunoni has it,
01:13:43119 to 107 for the winner.
01:13:46And still,
01:13:48W.O. Super,
01:13:51middleweight champion of the world,
01:13:53the hitman,
01:13:55Thomas Hearns.
01:13:58Tommy Hearns, 47-3-1.
01:14:04Winner by unanimous decision.
01:14:07I'm glad I did my little work.
01:14:12You know what I didn't
01:14:12but it was very difficult
01:14:13to catch up with him.
01:14:14It was very hard.
01:14:16Tommy, have you met a defensive fighter
01:14:19that had that kind of skill?
01:14:20I mean, he seemed to just have radar
01:14:22for your fight.
01:14:23He was very defensive
01:14:25and very alert.
01:14:27He was very defensive
01:14:28and very alert.
01:14:30It made it very difficult.
01:14:32At first,
01:14:33I found it a little difficult
01:14:34trying to locate it with my left hand.
01:14:36And the left hand is my key work.
01:14:38And I've been basically working
01:14:39on the left hand
01:14:40trying to get it strong
01:14:42so I can't jab all night
01:14:44and set the right hand up.
01:14:46He made it quite difficult for me.
01:14:48But you did land the right hand
01:14:49and when you did
01:14:50and he went down,
01:14:50you did something uncharacteristic
01:14:52of the hitman.
01:14:52You swarmed.
01:14:53You usually take your time.
01:14:54You're a hitman.
01:14:55You're ice cold.
01:14:56You go in there and do your work.
01:14:57All of a sudden...
01:14:57That was a bad mistake.
01:15:00And I will never make that mistake again.
01:15:02Even my training manager told me
01:15:04that you lost your pulse.
01:15:05I mean,
01:15:06you just lost all conciles.
01:15:08Well,
01:15:08if there's one thing
01:15:09everybody will carry away
01:15:10from Tommy Heron's fights
01:15:11from 1980 to 1990
01:15:12is your ability to finish
01:15:13in a cold,
01:15:14cold hitman way.
01:15:16And that we didn't see.
01:15:18And I was more surprised
01:15:20at Emanuel Stewart.
01:15:21If we can see the monitor,
01:15:23here's the knockdown.
01:15:24You can see what a perfect right hand
01:15:25you hit him with.
01:15:26Tell us about that.
01:15:27I was just sitting on two
01:15:28with a light left jab
01:15:30since Blake and a Washington left jab
01:15:31and made it easier
01:15:32for me to sneak the right hand through.
01:15:34But after that,
01:15:35first right hand
01:15:35was kind of difficult
01:15:36to hit him plusher.
01:15:37Now here's the swarming
01:15:38we talk about.
01:15:39Watch as most of those
01:15:41are bouncing off of his gloves.
01:15:43Yeah,
01:15:43I wouldn't take my time
01:15:44to set my punches
01:15:45or place my punches
01:15:46like I usually do.
01:15:47I used to take my time
01:15:48to just place myself
01:15:49but I was just
01:15:49falling away
01:15:50and hitting nothing.
01:15:52Let me ask you another thing.
01:15:55One of the things
01:15:55that I consider you
01:15:56such a great boxer
01:15:57and such a great puncher
01:15:59is that you began
01:15:59to showboat
01:16:00in an unnecessary fashion.
01:16:01That's not you.
01:16:02No, that wasn't me neither.
01:16:04I guess I just wasn't
01:16:06tooled for this fight.
01:16:07I trained very hard
01:16:08but I can't say
01:16:11I was definitely focused
01:16:12on what I was doing.
01:16:13I was just doing
01:16:15something to follow
01:16:16the most of it
01:16:17and just reaction.
01:16:18All right.
01:16:18Emmanuel Stewart,
01:16:19in a couple,
01:16:20the long time
01:16:21trainer, teacher,
01:16:22professor,
01:16:22All right.
01:16:24You get Ray Leonard
01:16:24to come back over here.
01:16:26I saw his legs go twice.
01:16:28I saw his legs
01:16:28just do a number.
01:16:29He didn't get hit.
01:16:30His legs just went wobbly
01:16:31on him.
01:16:31I mean,
01:16:32what's next for this guy?
01:16:34I mean,
01:16:34are we seeing
01:16:35the beginning
01:16:36of the end of Tommy?
01:16:37Well,
01:16:37the legs really bother me
01:16:38because I saw the same thing
01:16:39and it seemed like
01:16:40he regained a little stability
01:16:41but overall
01:16:42it was a little shaken
01:16:43and you know,
01:16:44at this point in time,
01:16:45I thought Elijah
01:16:45was a pretty good fight
01:16:46because he wasn't
01:16:47in that great a danger
01:16:48because Elijah
01:16:49is not a physical fight
01:16:50and not a puncher.
01:16:51So,
01:16:51I'll have to assess
01:16:52where he goes from here.
01:16:53I'd like to see him
01:16:54fight another fight
01:16:54soon
01:16:56and then take another
01:16:57good look at him
01:16:57and see where he stands
01:16:58at leg lines.
01:16:59Okay,
01:17:00Emmanuel,
01:17:00I hope you look at him
01:17:01where he...
01:17:01Maybe it was just
01:17:02a case of
01:17:02too long off,
01:17:04not in the best of shape
01:17:04or whatever,
01:17:05maybe just Father Time
01:17:06is sitting in.
01:17:07I think Father Time
01:17:07is catching up
01:17:08with you in a hurry
01:17:09and thank you very much
01:17:10for coming in.
01:17:11Let me talk to Elijah Day
01:17:12who had a wonderful,
01:17:14a wonderful night
01:17:16of defensive fighting
01:17:17and certainly
01:17:18a night to be proud of
01:17:19in the last few rounds.
01:17:21You carried out
01:17:21the strategy at the beginning.
01:17:24What was going through
01:17:25your mind
01:17:25when Angela said
01:17:26take your time,
01:17:26take your time,
01:17:27just be patient?
01:17:28Did you think
01:17:29that was going to pay off
01:17:29at the end?
01:17:30I originally thought it did.
01:17:32Tommy was in a lot better
01:17:32condition to be considered
01:17:33although I did train
01:17:34for a top flight Hearns.
01:17:36I thought I could have done
01:17:39a little bit more.
01:17:39I didn't let my hands
01:17:40go enough.
01:17:41I was stiff.
01:17:41Fighting someone
01:17:42isn't as great
01:17:44as Thomas Hearns
01:17:44is expected
01:17:45but I'm professional now
01:17:47and I should be
01:17:47letting my punches go.
01:17:48When you started
01:17:48to come on
01:17:49you got hit
01:17:49by your right hand
01:17:50and you went down.
01:17:51Were you in any kind
01:17:51of trouble?
01:17:52Because you looked
01:17:52like you recovered
01:17:53on those ropes
01:17:53and were able
01:17:54to take all of the shots.
01:17:55Yeah, I really was.
01:17:56I mean, you come
01:17:57with a good shot.
01:17:58Angelo and Hector
01:17:58were warning me beforehand.
01:17:59They said,
01:18:00don't reach,
01:18:00whatever you do
01:18:01because that's when
01:18:01you get caught
01:18:02and I think that's what I did.
01:18:03I threw a one, two.
01:18:04I leaned over my feet
01:18:05and I got caught
01:18:06but when I got up
01:18:07I was all right.
01:18:08Tommy did an uncharacteristic thing.
01:18:09He swarmed all over you
01:18:10instead of taking his time
01:18:12like he is.
01:18:12He's the hitman.
01:18:13Now, let us take a look
01:18:15at the knockdown
01:18:16when we come back
01:18:17on the monitor here.
01:18:19Now, you tell me
01:18:19what you're seeing
01:18:20about yourself.
01:18:21Well, I'm leaning.
01:18:22I'm dropping.
01:18:24Yeah, I was standing
01:18:24directly in front of him.
01:18:25That's exactly
01:18:26what we didn't want to do.
01:18:27I felt that right hand
01:18:28graze me the second one
01:18:29so that's how I knew
01:18:30I was all right.
01:18:30But then you came back
01:18:32and the surprising thing
01:18:33is not only did you
01:18:33absorb his entire charge
01:18:35and we see it on the ropes
01:18:36but you came back
01:18:37and then attacked him
01:18:39and were winning
01:18:39the end of the round.
01:18:41I felt really good.
01:18:42My punching power
01:18:42I thought would be
01:18:43a little bit more effective
01:18:44but possibly when we get
01:18:46back down to 160
01:18:47my real weight
01:18:47I'll be carrying
01:18:49more of a legitimate punch.
01:18:50Were you trying
01:18:51for a left hook?
01:18:52He seemed to be
01:18:53getting left hook crazy there.
01:18:55I did.
01:18:56That's my best punch
01:18:57and I thought I'd be able
01:18:57to catch him with it.
01:18:58I think I may have left it
01:18:59just a little bit too long
01:19:00to start.
01:19:01I mean, if I would have
01:19:02started to press it
01:19:02around the fourth round
01:19:03take a little bit more
01:19:04of a chance.
01:19:04Well, I think you surprised
01:19:05a lot of people today
01:19:06that thought the silk
01:19:07was going to come in
01:19:08and get torn in half.
01:19:09You did well
01:19:09at the very last part
01:19:10of that fight
01:19:11was an exciting fight.
01:19:12One last word from you.
01:19:13Yes, please.
01:19:14I'd like to say thank you
01:19:14to Cybex, Vinnie Perez,
01:19:16Angelo Dundee,
01:19:17Hector Roka, Doc Perrano,
01:19:18all my friends,
01:19:18Michael Dermando,
01:19:19Castle Sports.
01:19:20Very good.
01:19:20Thank you very much.
01:19:21Let's go back
01:19:22to Steve Albert at ringside.
01:19:23All right, Ferdi,
01:19:24a victory for Tommy Hearns,
01:19:25but not the kind
01:19:26Hearns desired.
01:19:29Not a convincing victory,
01:19:30not the kind a showman
01:19:33would desire.
01:19:35Tommy Hearns, though,
01:19:36wins by unanimous decision
01:19:38over Michael Olajide
01:19:40to retain the WBO
01:19:42Super Middleweight Championship.
01:19:45And his stablemate
01:19:46from the Cronk Gym in Detroit,
01:19:48Michael Mora,
01:19:48defeated Mario Mora.
