We've got an interesting ugly problem here.
00:03
Ugly, because 60,000 miles and it's got...
00:08
Ouch!
00:09
Look at all this metal in there.
00:12
Lack of lubrication.
00:13
This one actually spun the bearing in the rod.
00:15
The one you don't do.
00:16
That's the most expensive oil change in the world.
00:30
Now, this thing has been tough.
00:57
We tried to work within the customer's budget.
00:59
This is so much sludge in the engine.
01:01
Didn't want us to rebuild the engine.
01:02
It was too expensive, so we got a used engine.
01:05
And if you watch me, you know how much.
01:07
Remember?
01:07
The knees.
01:08
Used engines make me quake.
01:10
We sim tested it like we like to do on all our used engines,
01:13
and it failed to sim test.
01:15
We had low compression a couple holes.
01:16
So what we did is we pulled the heads off, spoke to the supplier.
01:20
They worked with us.
01:21
We pulled the heads off, did a complete valve job on them.
01:24
And on a direct injected engine, that's a great thing to do
01:27
because the valves were just carboned up to heck.
01:30
Let's hear it.
01:32
Booyah!
01:33
So we're just going to do some final checks on it.
01:36
Man, deliver this thing.
01:37
I love it.
01:39
I love helping a customer out.
01:41
I would have preferred to give him a full warranty with a remand,
01:43
but it just blew his budget.
01:45
You know, guys, that's what you remember.
01:47
If you can work with a customer and still do a good job,
01:49
and you don't have to sacrifice the quality of your craftsmanship,
01:53
and you can find a way to, you know, both of you meet,
01:56
you'll gain a customer for life.
01:58
And this guy's got a fleet of these.
01:59
So I'm happy to work with people like that.
02:03
So I'm done.
02:20
This is the one where the oil was just thick and nasty,
02:25
and the sludge inside this motor was beyond belief.
02:27
Let's start it up, Kyle.
02:29
Oh, yeah, baby.
02:34
Nice and quiet.
02:36
Loving that.
02:36
All right.
02:37
Let's hook a scanner up to it.
02:39
You've checked all your fluid levels, Kyle.
02:42
All fluid levels are good.
02:43
Let's hook a scanner up to it and go for a drive,
02:45
and make sure all our ready code's set.
02:48
At least we won't get the EVAP or the O2 sensors in the CAT.
02:53
Okay.
02:54
Let's take it for a drive.
02:55
You know, this vehicle, Kyle,
02:58
it was used as a transport for like a ski lodge from the bottom,
03:01
you know, like just between the hotel and the mountain or something like that.
03:04
Right.
03:04
So basically, this is, you know,
03:05
let's start it up in cold weather and drive it for a mile back,
03:12
and that's it.
03:13
Let it sit until I got it and use it again.
03:15
Which is, I can't think of anything harder on an engine than,
03:18
you know, pouring sand in the dang thing.
03:20
Oh, right, right.
03:20
Right.
03:21
You know, so on an engine like that,
03:23
he needs to do an oil sample on it and determine how fast he's breaking that oil down,
03:29
you know, because he's not getting it warmed up enough to burn off the acids and things like that.
03:33
Oh, yeah.
03:34
No lights or anything?
03:35
Everything's...
03:35
No, everything's good.
03:38
Okay.
03:39
Just take it down a furniture road.
03:40
Now, what we like to do, folks, you know, in my four C's, condition, cause...
03:46
Correction, confirm.
03:49
You're the man, Kyle.
03:51
Condition, cause, correction, confirm.
03:53
What we're doing now, we had the condition, engine was sludged up,
03:58
the cause, infrequent and improper oil changes,
04:01
and for the drivability of the car, we've determined now.
04:04
The correction, we ended up getting a used motor, we had to pull the heads off of,
04:09
we did a valve job on the heads.
04:11
Yep.
04:11
Because in our sim test machine, we had some leakage, right?
04:16
Yep.
04:17
So we took care of that, inspected the bottom end, it was a cheaper way to go.
04:22
Now we're confirming our repair.
04:24
Yep.
04:25
By taking on a good test drive.
04:27
These are the things maybe sometimes, you know, a shop could just do a little better at.
04:31
I know it's costly, but if you'll just stop and think for a minute,
04:35
and Kyle knows this, cause he's been a tech for me for years.
04:38
How much more costly is it, Kyle, when you didn't just take that extra five minutes or 10 minutes
04:43
to confirm your repair, but now the customer comes back, the service rider's got to deal with it,
04:48
you got to relook at it, you got to get back familiar with it to dot, you know, just blah, blah, blah.
04:53
Usually, I mean, it's, you bite the bullet on the big repair first go, it's, it usually is better,
04:58
you know, you make sure, I mean, I got 99.9%.
05:01
It's always better to make sure that when you're done with it, you give it,
05:04
when you give birth to that thing, it don't come back to the hospital.
05:07
I don't want to see it again.
05:08
No.
05:08
Everything's looking good, man.
05:10
The O2 sensors are nice and cycling.
05:13
Whip this thing around, let's get back to the shop.
05:15
I think you're good, man.
05:23
Got a little bit of a driveline shutter, doesn't it?
05:26
Yeah, a little bit.
05:27
But stop it again, you got anybody behind you?
05:29
No, come to a full stop.
05:34
Yeah, and on the driveline shutter, everybody, you usually start feeling that come in around
05:38
20, 30 mile an hour under a heavy load.
05:41
Now, that has nothing to do with the work that we did, because we couldn't even test drive the
05:44
vehicle when it brought to us, the engine was blown up.
05:47
But these are, these are things you want to put on your ticket.
05:50
Customer spends all that money, and they get the truck back, and they're totally like
05:55
in the zone on this.
05:56
They're going to hear the squeaks, the rumble, the things like that.
06:00
And if you didn't kind of note that and cover your butt, for lack of a better way to say it,
06:04
they're tuned into that.
06:05
They just dropped, you know, thousands and thousands of dollars on a vehicle,
06:10
and they're going to be like, I mean, they're going to know everything, man.
06:13
A little hypersensitive after that.
06:16
Hypers, that's excellent.
06:17
They're hypersensitive to it.
06:19
So you kind of got to say, hey, you might have a little driveline vibration,
06:23
the tires could need balancing, things like that.
06:25
They know, oh, that's something else.
06:27
Or they might, you know, think that it was you.
06:30
Guy's going to be happy to get this back.
06:31
You know, now we go the extra mile, and we talk to this guy and say, look,
06:34
let's get some oil samples on the rest of your fleet,
06:37
so you can avoid this problem on your other Nissan van.
06:41
I'm pretty sure this guy would rather spend a little bit of money with me on like 20 vans,
06:45
than a crap load of money with me.
06:47
Yep, so I'm doing an engine and half of them.
06:49
On 10 of them, right.
06:50
Do your maintenance, dang it.
06:51
I'm busy.
06:53
We got a t-shirt with that on, you know that?
06:55
Yeah.
06:55
I'm an engine builder.
06:56
This is what I do.
06:57
90% of my business, I'm not an oil change shop.
07:00
You know, in fact, you come to me for an oil change,
07:02
I'm going to tell you I'm out until Christmas.
07:03
I don't have time for oil changes.
07:05
But if you've got a guy that doesn't make money off of what he's trying to preach you to do,
07:10
that might be the guy you want to listen to.
07:12
I'm going to do my final look over, final touches right after this.
07:15
All right, man.
07:16
Get that oil change sticker in here.
07:17
Wrap it up, dude.
