00:00So we got this engine that was shipped to us from a Mercedes-Benz dealer and they were so
00:11nice they sent us all the specialty tools for this engine. They bagged them up for us because
00:17this engine apparently is sixty thousand dollars from the dealer. They sent us to part some of the
00:26stuff they think we'll need. But apparently what they did was they did this motor
00:32themselves and messed it up. So we're gonna tear it down get into it and find
00:39out what we can do to take care of them. You know it ain't gonna be cheap when
00:42you get these three letters on a motor AMG. The dealer sent this to me and the
00:47story was is that they rolled in main bearings in this motor and when I show
00:51you this main girdle you're gonna be like you pretty much have to tear the motor
00:55completely down. Yeah I'm like okay so let's whip it over and let's let's look
01:01at this main girdle. We got stuff in here and that don't look good but let's whip
01:07this bad boy over man. Oh my gosh. So that's why I was working to check the
01:14timing before I pulled my pump off. That's where I'm gonna start is get this
01:16pump off and then I'm just gonna pull this thing off and see what I got. This
01:19looks like this will take you what 15 minutes Joey? Ten. That's a heck of an old
01:24pump drive. They got two two impellers on that oil pump. Two sumps. Okay we got a
01:28pickup here and we got two pickups here. See if I can get this thing apart. See if we can fix it.
01:34Let's do it.
01:36It's a $65,000 block from the dealer. No way. Yeah that's why they want us to build it. No way.
01:5865 grand for the engine from the dealer.
02:05This is always something that's a little scary for a mechanic. When they're undoing cam shafts that are loaded like that, especially on a dual overhead cam motor, they'll want to pop away on you and you don't want to bust the cam
02:35cap. So be very careful when you do this. We're gonna document what we got and then
02:40we're gonna do our best to verify that that's correct. A guy could have put this
02:43back together and not got the caps in the right order or something like that. I
02:46mean there's just a million things that a guy could do putting this back together
02:51not be right. This is all our responsibility now.
03:08Okay let's get the heads off brother.
03:13This head was way looser than this head. Oh really? Yeah. You know if you look at the dirt I mean you're
03:18wondering. It doesn't look to me like they had the dang motor apart. Right. I don't
03:22know how they would get bearings in it without taking it apart.
03:25Ladies you got to be pumped to do this. Check it out. Massive. Massive. Pretty good arm
03:32wrestler that's for sure. Nope. What's the deal there? Looks like they stripped it out and re-tapped it.
03:41My son the genius. Apple don't fall far from the tree, right?
03:47Why my son's not listening I'm gonna tell you guys something. I know he makes this
03:51look easy but he's been doing it since he's a little boy. He's learned a lot so
03:55he he figures stuff out and that's so much of what we do around here. You just
03:59got to figure out how to make it work.
04:11I'm not 100% off.
04:1316 x.
04:24Here I go.
04:3117 x it made me off.
04:391, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 3, 2, 1, 2, 1.
05:03Ouch!
05:05Oh, ouch!
05:07this is getting painful a lot of times guys will have a crank and they'll think hey that's not so
05:14bad let's just roll bearings in it and it doesn't work uh ever okay look at that dude well so it
05:22looks like they started to try to pull that seal out for some reason they i think they screwed
05:26into it it came damn freaking close dude yeah i mean it didn't really mess up the girdle it ain't
05:33it ain't spun that bearing but boy i'll tell you this guy was this guy was moments away from this
05:38block being screwed this one spun in the housing did it yeah well i just let let's get it up out
05:45of there this guy's 60 000 engine it's not going to cost him 60 grand to fix but it's going to need
05:50a little tlc i mean it's a nice crank though man that's a sweet forged crank this is a flat plane
05:57crank so if you look see how these two weights are to each other these two weights are to each
06:04other uh-huh it's pretty much like an inline crank straight six it's called a flat plane crank
06:09you can spin them up way faster and no inherent vibration built into it because that well yeah
06:16and the balance when you balance them you don't use bob weights tell me what that is right there
06:20you can feel it look at that ford crank with a big old crack across it holy moly okay how in the
06:31heck did that happen that come from the factory that way that's like super super unusual all right
06:38let's call it let's call the dealer give him the great news hi this is dave at dave's auto
06:43center and hey hey did you receive the text i did i i reviewed those pictures that you sent over
06:50and that's not looking great it's not and uh what can you tell me so that i get it from kind of from
06:56the horse's mouth yeah absolutely dave so here's where we started with this whole thing um we got
07:01this c63 in here it's a 2014 uh you know it came from a guy who basically bought it off his buddy's son
07:10who had died now that guy the original owner the guy that died had the car um evidently it got some
07:19sort of wreck collision he hit something i don't know it broke the front pan and basically the guy
07:26the original owner had it fixed at mercedes bin they put like six thousand dollars worth of parts
07:30into it the current owner gets in it drives it around for about 20 minutes and starts using oil
07:35out the rear main the dealer doesn't want to touch it now um they don't want to do anything about the
07:40work they did so we get it in here i see that the you know the rear mains like popped out of it i
07:45didn't know if it was an installation error or whatever the original problem of when this car
07:50got wrecked and what i'm fairly certain happened dave because there was never really any miles put
07:55on this vehicle in between these repairs gotcha i think that the insurance company because it was
08:00such a low mileage car you know the car was worth so much they bought an engine block for 16 grand
08:06rather than buying a 50 000 engine right okay then they were going to pay the technician to swap it
08:13over well what happened is i think the technician took the bottom half of the case off of the block
08:17that they bought and put it on the original block right without taking everything completely apart so
08:22now we you and i both know that's a line board unit you can't do that and i think that's what we're
08:27dealing with here i had the wrong story somebody told me that somebody rolled main bearings in in here
08:32in here and i was like this isn't this isn't a uh say like a chevy 350 where the main caps come off
08:38individual you can't roll mains in this motor so at first no no you look at those cases on the back
08:43side you can look at the casting numbers on those on the back end of that that engine those numbers
08:48on those case halves should match and they don't i think the bottom case has got busted and i think
08:53somebody just kind of flat rated it you know they put the case on from you know the block that they
08:58bought and i think that our block that we need somewhere is probably somebody's coffee table
09:03out you know okay i see what you're saying yeah this is like a hack job of all hack jobs is what
09:09you're telling me it kind of is and you know that it's it sucks because the guy's got a car here
09:14that's got 2700 miles on it new engine i think installed is going to probably run in about 40
09:19but yeah still a lot of money for a car that's not really worth it at this point this is making a
09:24little sense for what i found because the bearings are scuffed on those three uh rear rod journals
09:30which would mean the align boards off but yeah um i can fix all that that's not the end of the world
09:36but i got a crack did you see the crack in the crank i saw the crank yeah i didn't see the crack
09:42i just got off the phone with mercedes fins there is one crankshaft still available and it's 5 500 bucks
09:48the block i could line hone i i could fix it i i could make the two uh case halves be perfect let me go
09:54ahead and wet mag the crank i'll get you some good pictures and we'll make a decision but it's a
09:59it's a fixer but it just do we need a crank or can i fix yours awesome it's bad news but it's good news
10:06um for sure all right i'll just wait to hear back from you uh before i call the customer and see what
10:12our next steps are here you bet okay thanks man all right thanks bye bye that's a weird thing the way
10:18he was explaining that is the car been in a major total wreck and he thinks that some yo-ho i'm gonna call
10:24them yo-ho's you can't change the whole main bearing girdle and just change that out it's it's
10:29they're matched pairs the top half and the bottom half have to be machined together so that the hole
10:34is centered that that's there's the reason that the main bearings are scuffed ah joey yeah i i got
10:42the rest of the story apparently the car was a total wreck the lower pan or girdle had been smacked
10:50and was busted so someone swapped out the lower girdle oh yeah dude you're like
10:58i know you know people think just because it bolts up it it should work
11:05so we need to go ahead and take the crank out okay well i'm gonna do that right now okay i'll
11:12thanks thanks all right yeah those pistons look brand new
11:18wow i would reuse those pistons
11:24the other thing that's really cool about this crank that i've never seen before is it's called
11:35a flat plane crank all the weights are counter to each other so on a regular like small block
11:41chevy v8 it's not on a plane but each one of these throws are equal to each other you can spin
11:47them up way faster it's a better quality crank they're not cheap that is really bad you can see
11:53the bad it's actually curled over the sides
11:55i got a six thousand dollar crank check the part number at your mercedes dealer
12:14fifty nine hundred bucks for a crankshaft forged crank and i'm about to show you a crack
12:20that's like so good not good for the customer but good for uh visual here and my wet mag step
12:27into my dark room okay come on in so if you look you've got that crack there and then 180
12:34whoa wow and you can tell 180 from that here's the thing that's uh interesting to me this was the
12:45forging line the hammer was doing boom boom boom boom when it was making this crank and it makes
12:53you kind of wonder has that been in there since day one that crank is junk we have a crank welder
12:59that's what this machine is right here this is actually a crank welder in fact here's a bunch
13:03of cranks that we're getting ready to work on and uh fix but we ain't fixing that one that looks to
13:10me like that's been that way there's a problem in the grain structure so uh wow it's not a dealer he's
13:17a uh a big mercedes-benz repair shop so i want to correct that it's not a dealer it's a big mercedes
13:23shop they've got a great reputation over there in denver they got stuck with this from the dealer
13:28and everybody said the dealer would never do that they'd put an engine in there and i was like
13:32that's that's right they would do that dealers don't go into engines what we think has happened
13:37here is is that somebody bought a lower case half off another engine and thought they could get away
13:44by just putting it on this one i see you roll your eyes dude i'm i'm not making this up this is the
13:49story i got so what we're going to do now is we're going to make these two case halves back together
13:55and we're going to check our line bore in here with our bore gauge and find out is that why those
14:02bearings were so uh scraped up is because we've got a case half that's not matched you'll see the
14:09steel insert in the aluminum housing that's steel and that's steel that's why you can rev this motor to
14:16seven grand and it'll just it'll hold on
14:23so
14:27we've torqued down our main girdle and now we're going to check
14:46the line bore here
14:48flip it around if that's true we are screwed it's a two thou difference let's see what it is here
14:56we know the problem with this motor let's go ahead and go all the way guide me back here jess
15:02one and a half let's let's turn it 90 degrees yeah we're uh we're almost three thou
15:09oh you could really feel it on this side this this right here going down you can feel it you can feel
15:15that's like you know it's three thouish you look here how do you fix a fifty sixty thousand dollar
15:20amg motor like this with steel inserts on this side and aluminum on the other the align home
15:27won't take kindly to that not three thou yeah right not three thou even to save this block is going to be
15:34a lot of work and it can be done the rear main i'm not too worried about i could pin the rear main
15:40as long as the rear main is like centered on the you know yeah the crank seal
15:45does mercedes sell a bare block is that more cost effective that's a good question that might be
15:54cheaper just to get a bare block and then build their components because i mean we're talking seven
16:00to ten thousand dollars worth of machine work on this block to make it right hey what's going on
16:05man so i sent you a picture of the crank the cracks one is one side of the crank and the other crack is
16:10180 degrees on the other side of the journal that crack that crank is cracked clean through right on
16:16the right on the forging line yeah and and uh you know i've got the block completely disassembled
16:22we reassembled the lower half to the top half torqued it all down and then uh dial bore gauged it and
16:28it's two and a half to three inches out around the girdle the bottom girdle on this thing has got
16:33steel inserts in it and the top the top half of the block is aluminum now i can't align home three
16:40inches that's a line bore you will run into trouble trying to align home half the block of steel and
16:46the other half is aluminum it it don't it'll eat the aluminum and not touch the steel the other problem
16:52that i'm faced with is the seal housing in order to line bore this block i have to remove material
16:59you know of the cap so to speak and the cap on this is the whole freaking girdle so i i can fly cut that
17:07girl you know i can take five thousandths off that girdle to reduce the size of my hole then a line bore
17:14the main you know the mains and get them back to size so that we can get standard bearings and all that
17:19in the block but now i've reduced the size of my rear main seal okay because i've shaved off five now
17:26is five going to be a problem probably not what you're saying is the board on the journal for the
17:32rear main housing is going to be shrunk five to ten thousand fish probably yes yeah when i that's not
17:39that's not a problem dave what i'll do is i'll just put that seal in the lathe here and they got a lot of like
17:45neoprene on the outside and i'll just take shave five thousandth off that deal that's not a big
17:50deal that five thousandths on a seal is not going to make a big yeah that we're on the same page i
17:55don't think so either i got a machine out in kansas who you know buried in freaking sprint car motors
18:01right now and he's like i got so much work i don't even want to touch it but kind of where we're faced
18:06with this this is yeah i mean this is a nightmare i mean have can you price a block it's 18 grand and
18:12it's not available basically submit this part to mercedes prepay for it up front and then they make
18:18it whoa and it takes three to four months to make it right now i don't even know if they would make
18:24it the problem is there's nothing available here's so my next question is have you used part of this
18:29thing dude and just find a a used mo i mean a mercedes used so we got three used motors dave we got
18:35three used motors and all of them were junk every one of them you know what i'm trying to do here dude
18:40i'm trying to find a good core it's 10 grand eight to 10 grand for you know a used engine i mean
18:47esque probably right well i'm just brainstorming with you here you know the problem is is that
18:51the car's got 2 000 miles on it a little over and that engine has virtually no mileage on it
18:58so you know what's out there is 50 000 plus mile engines you know yeah and he just doesn't want that
19:06but i don't know between what he wants and what he's going to get is two different things it's
19:10a full build i'm not gonna you know there's no band-aid going on here so we're gonna need at
19:14least a new ring package uh full gasket set i know you sent me a bunch of stuff i haven't looked
19:20through it in the box did you send me rod bolts i'm going to send you those um with the crank if
19:27everything you know yeah obviously price dependent here now yeah um so i'll let me get with him and
19:33joey and uh i'll be talking to you on monday yeah that's fine okay let me know what's going on here
19:40and hopefully we can get this thing fixed all right man thanks bye bye oh you gotta do a lot of work
19:48man to make this right we'll see then we'll uh make some more measurements determine what it's going to
19:55take see if we can help him out all right
