00:00Hey Tanner, this is Dave at Dave's Auto. I'm calling you because I guess I got bad news
00:04and I just figured I'd call you and tell you myself.
00:22You know, you bend over a lot of hoods in your time, or underneath a lot of hoods,
00:27and when you're not familiar with an engine, the first thing I would recommend you do is kind of
00:32stop and take a look. Just kind of familiarize yourself with the routings and things like that,
00:38you know. Here's your oil filter housing, the worst possible place for it, I suppose.
00:43Look at this, here's a nice coolant bleed, you know, the highest point of the cooling system.
00:47That's a nice little bleed. So there you go, that was smart. Thank you, engineer.
00:52You've got these insulators here on top of your fuel injectors because they're noisy,
00:58and that's not uncommon, but you peel those back and make sure that the return lines don't have any leaks,
01:03because this diesel died while driving, and normally diesels die because they don't have any fuel,
01:10and so the quickest way is, you know, you want to make sure you got no fuel leaks anywhere,
01:16and it's all dry underneath there. So now what we'll do is we'll just crank the engine and take a look.
01:22Now here's another thing that's a little suspect for me on this diesel engine.
01:26Timing belt. See these plastic covers on here? So what we want to do, we've pulled the oil cap off here,
01:33I want to see if the camshaft's rotating, and I want to listen too to see how the engine cranks.
01:39Let's go ahead and just crank it, just see what we get. So I'm looking down the camshaft here,
01:46and I'm going to be able to see, I'll give you a picture down here.
01:50Let me know when you're ready.
01:51Huh?
01:52I said let me know when you're ready.
01:53I'm ready, go ahead.
01:58Okay.
01:59Okay, stop.
02:02Okay, crank on it.
02:04So the cam is turning.
02:07Now that doesn't mean that it's in time correctly.
02:10So there's another concern that we have.
02:12And I just heard something that's a concern to me.
02:15So we always want to, you know, I always talk about it.
02:18God gave you five senses.
02:19Man, if you think about it, five senses on the organism that has to survive on a hostile planet in an environment.
02:26That's not a lot of input sensors, but they're so good that we only needed five of them.
02:32An engine's got 20 of them.
02:34Throttle position, coolant temp sensor, ambient air temp, barometric pressure sensors.
02:38It's got all these inputs in order to drive the car.
02:41And so use your inputs, your senses.
02:45So when this was cranking just now, I heard this kind of a doo-doo-doo-doo noise.
02:50Let's listen to it again.
02:51Go ahead and crank it.
02:52That noise is worrisome to me.
03:01But what I'm going to do now is let's just see if it's a fuel issue or if it's like a timing mechanical issue.
03:14Give me some go juice, man.
03:16You do not take this in a diesel and just like that.
03:20You'll lock the motor up.
03:21You just lightly spray it.
03:23Go ahead.
03:24Hit it.
03:25Again.
03:26Okay.
03:27So I'm barely, I'm barely triggering it.
03:42Not a mechanical problem.
03:44You've got a fuel problem.
03:45Now we kind of know where to dive into it.
03:47So we're going to do a few tests, follow us along, and we'll see if it's the delivery pump in the tank.
03:52If it's the high pressure pump, this thing does have a CP4 on it, doesn't it?
03:55Right back there, yeah.
03:56Yeah.
03:57CP4.
03:58You know about those.
03:59They're on the Europeans too, not just on our American trucks.
04:03And obviously we're going to take a fuel sample.
04:06And we're going to see what's going on here.
04:09Yeah, they don't give me that much room on this.
04:14I was wondering what that was.
04:16Yeah, that's his catch can basically.
04:20Do we have any more mason jars?
04:22That's a pretty nice catch can to be honest with you.
04:25I'm actually liking that thing.
04:28You know, he's got a good cap in here for the vapors.
04:33He's got a hose going into the canister.
04:36And he's going back, putting it back in here into the intake.
04:41That's a really nice catch can to be honest with you.
04:44I give that catch can a thumbs up right there.
04:48We have everything so tight in here.
04:51So we're going to start with our basics first.
04:53Just do the low on fuel pressure test.
04:55Make sure the fuel pump in the tank is actually sending up the fuel.
04:59There might be an underlining issue where that's not working.
05:02Then, yes, of course it won't start.
05:04But then it might be wearing out the injection pump.
05:06Well then, if they've got that coming, then I'll drop it.
05:08Did you check the high school perfect data?
05:13Did you check the high school perfect data?
05:17Yeah, it's at 88.
05:20But that's not enough.
05:22Nope.
05:23It should be at like 3,000.
05:25Well, did it have desired?
05:27Uh, yeah.
05:32Is the filter under there?
05:33Yep, it's right here.
05:34Huh?
05:35Yeah, it's right here.
05:37Man, what the heck?
05:38That thing's not coming out.
05:40Her arm is just disappearing down the hole.
05:42I don't know.
05:43I'm trying to disconnect the fuel filter.
05:47Yeah, using your fingers as your eyes.
05:49You know, image it in your head.
05:52Some type of alien?
05:54Jeez.
05:55You have to be blind.
05:57You can't.
05:58You can't.
05:59You're hiding your other senses.
06:01Yeah.
06:02There we go.
06:12Okay.
06:13Got the fuel filter out.
06:18We took this out so we can do two things at once.
06:22We can check for low unfuel pressure, and then if there isn't, either way we want to cut open this filter and see if there's any metal inside.
06:28Cause if we have low unfuel pressure, then that means the high pressure side possibly means that there's contamination in the pumps wearing.
06:35Or the pump is starting to wear cause there's no fuel getting set up to it.
06:39So it's lack of lubrication.
06:40I'm going to get the line that comes up, the fuel sending line, and then we'll try attempt to starting it and see if any fuel comes out.
07:00Looks like the return, this looks like the main sending.
07:22So we got low unfuel pressure.
07:25Now we're going to check out the high pressure pump.
07:27Oh, so now you've got your gauge.
07:29I just put a cup.
07:31It's rated for like 7 PSI.
07:34So we're going to watch the gauge, make sure we're getting the correct PSI coming up from the low pump, and then we'll double check the high pressure.
07:42So it's rated for about 7, so it should be just right around that 10.
07:50Okay, ready?
07:51Yeah.
07:52So we're roughly about 5 PSI.
07:54It's rated for 7, should still be able to start.
07:58So now, just like all CP4s, our demonstration box.
08:12So I'm just going to pop off this regulator up top and check for a metal like that one.
08:17What would you do, Tyson?
08:19I can see the regulator, and that's what I would usually do is pull that off, but should I cut open the filter first?
08:25Oh, so you poured what was in it into here?
08:27Yeah.
08:28Okay.
08:29See the gunk now in it?
08:30Yeah.
08:31So...
08:32Move this over.
08:33We're going to cut it open.
08:34Let's see what we can see inside.
08:49How much metal.
08:50This is the glue that holds it in.
09:17Okay.
09:18Got it out.
09:24Looks like it hasn't been changed in a bit.
09:28Just in a while.
09:29Or ever.
09:30Yeah.
09:31Even if we don't find any metal, so...
09:34Right off the bat, it's real nasty.
09:44Trying to see...
09:45It's really hard on camera, but there's some metallic flakes in there.
09:51Possible.
09:52Yeah, it's a tad glittery running down right there.
09:55Can you kind of see that?
09:57Yeah.
09:58Think so?
09:59Good.
10:00It runs down.
10:02Now I'll pull the regulator and double check for any contamination.
10:06That can change there, so you caniell Mash It is breaking up.
10:07Yeah.
10:08Divided.
10:09And then the connector down to wound everything.
10:10Yeah M engine.
10:11It's like you acne all down.
10:12We can use you boom.
10:13All that's right.
10:14There's nothing down there.
10:15I guess I would.
10:16You could see those people that are로子 wären stars.
10:17And the other dealer saw what the she was doing.
10:18Oh look at these.
10:19And the four days ago.
10:20You could see the Noodle.
10:21So that's the It.
10:22There you can see those shards right there.
10:49Those are the bad ones.
10:50So we've pulled the quantity valve off this CP4 pump and we've checked.
10:54By the way, low pressure, do we have the...
10:57We have low pressure.
10:58Let's see, this is a perfect example.
11:00The guy came in here and wanted us to replace the low pressure pump because I believe he
11:05read something on the internet or something like that.
11:08And we kind of talked him out of it.
11:10We said, look, you know, if we replace that pump, will you be okay with paying us and
11:14that doesn't fix a dang thing?
11:16And he thought about it and decided that wasn't probably the right thing to do.
11:20The pump is pumping fuel.
11:22The sad part about it is it'll still need to be replaced because it'll be contaminated
11:27with metal.
11:28So the tank will have to be dropped, the line's flushed, the in-tank pump replaced, the CP4
11:34high pressure pump replaced, the injectors and all the rails flushed.
11:38This is as big as a nightmare as it is on a Duramax or a power stroke.
11:42And you can see here on this note, we can take this over to my microscope.
11:46Remember, I talked to you guys about it before.
11:47There's a big old piece of metal right there.
11:50You need to look at this under microscope.
11:52But when you see these metal filings like this hanging on this, that's a dead giveaway that
11:59the CP4 has failed.
12:01And that roller in there, when we take this off, we'll open that up and show you.
12:06When you have catastrophic failure like this, the entire fuel system needs to be decontaminated.
12:12See all this crap hanging in here?
12:16This is metal that's hanging in the fuel.
12:19So when this happens, low sulfur fuel, no lubricity.
12:24We've got no lubricant in our diesel fuel here in America.
12:28And it just wipes out that roller on this high lift cam that's pumping that fuel.
12:33So replace the whole fuel system like you're supposed to.
12:36That's what the manufacturer recommends.
12:38Rails, injectors, fuel filter, tank.
12:42What's up?
12:45What's up?
12:46Okay.
12:47Hey, this is important.
12:48Our gladiator giveaway, it closes out on December 31st, New Year's Eve.
12:52So you want to get your points in for the giveaway before then.
12:57Getting back to the pump issue is you want to be able to give your customer options.
13:01So the only other option is just replace the pump that's failed, put a new fuel filter
13:06on it, and then have this conversation.
13:08Come in close.
13:09This is real important.
13:10There is no warranty.
13:11I'll get your truck up and running, but there's no warranty because I've still got all that
13:15circulating metal that could get in and screw the pump up or an injector.
13:20So it's an option, but you want to make sure that that option has consequences that the
13:25customer understands.
13:26This is Tanner.
13:27Hey, Tanner.
13:28This is Dave at Dave's Auto.
13:30How are you?
13:31Hey, Dave.
13:32How are you doing?
13:33I'm good.
13:34Merry Christmas to you and your team, guy.
13:35You too.
13:36Hey, listen.
13:37I'm calling you because I guess I got bad news and I just figured I'd call you and tell
13:42you myself.
13:43Well, ho, ho, ho, you're going to get a nice, you're a good guy, dude.
13:52I won't leave you cold for Christmas, but listen, I've got on your Land Rover, it's got
13:57contamination in the fuel.
13:59We got the up and running.
14:00We used some starting fluid and got the engine running.
14:02At first, I was concerned maybe the timing belt broke.
14:05This engine has a timing belt on it.
14:08Yeah, I just had it replaced about four or six months, well, maybe six or eight months
14:14ago.
14:15Good.
14:16That was going to be one of my questions.
14:17Has it been done?
14:18Because with the mileage on there, it was due to be done.
14:21So, good.
14:22Yeah, I had it done when it was due.
14:24Okay, good.
14:25So, that's not a problem.
14:26I got the engine up and running with some starting fluid, but your injection system is taking
14:30a big fat dump and it's got what they call a CP4, the high pressure pump.
14:36The model is a CP4.
14:37It does have a CP4 pump in it.
14:39It does have a CP4 and it's grenaded and that means that it's kind of taking a dump
14:46in your entire fuel system.
14:48You've got metal in the system and we'll send you some digital photos here in a little bit,
14:53but I just wanted to tell you, you know, Brandon of course will put you a quote together.
14:59Put your head between your knees and take some deep breaths for you, open up the attachment
15:04because I'll tell you, dude, it'll make you pass out.
15:06I mean, it's...
15:07Oh, I know.
15:08I know how much they cost.
15:09They're usually about 18 grand on like a full-size pickup.
15:13I think this should be a little less than that, but I mean, yeah, it's ugly.
15:18Exactly.
15:19We'll get you some digital photos, some information and a quote out and anyway, sorry for the bad...
15:24So the lift pump's still good?
15:26Yes, the lift pump is pumping fuel.
15:28We did check that.
15:29It's pumping fuel, but the problem is we've got to drop the tank and if we can't clean that
15:33lift pump out, you know, we'll have to look at how the cartridge is in there, it'll need
15:38to be replaced because, you know...
15:40Oh, okay.
15:41A lot of it'll be...
15:42We'll do...
15:43We'll do everything back to the tank.
15:44Exactly.
15:45We'll do a...
15:46It just depends on how much we've got.
15:47We'll make a decision on that.
15:48Brandon will give you a quote for it, but, you know, what we don't have to replace, we
15:53won't, but, you know, you really won't know until you take a look at it.
15:56All right, I'll...
15:57All right.
15:58All that is bad news.
15:59I know.
16:00I know.
16:01That's a good...
16:02It was, I'm sure, ran with just regular fuel for a long time, but since I've got it,
16:07I've been running the additive in every tank, so I was hoping that was going to save her,
16:12but it didn't work, evidently.
16:14You got the right idea.
16:15There's no doubt about it.
16:17You know, a fuel...
16:18A diesel fuel conditioner with lubricities and cleaners in it, is that certainly better
16:24than...
16:25Yeah.
16:26Because our diesel fuel, as you know, is so low sulfur.
16:28But...
16:29Yeah.
16:30It's kind of like, if you bought it used, it's like a guy that, you know, you can put
16:35100,000 miles on a truck and change the oil twice, and then all of a sudden you decide
16:39to start changing it regularly.
16:40The damage is already done.
16:41Did you find out anything else on, as far as...
16:46When you got it running, did you see how much blow by it has?
16:49I only had it running for, like, four or five seconds.
16:52Because I'm making...
16:53Oh, okay.
16:54I'm making a run off of ether.
16:55Off ether, yeah.
16:56Okay.
16:57Yeah.
16:58You kind of want to be careful about that.
17:00We won't get to that point until after we get it actually running on fuel then again.
17:04Yeah.
17:05Okay.
17:06All right.
17:07Sounds good.
17:08Well, thanks for the bad news, and I'm hoping we'll be in touch soon for that engine
17:14tear down.
17:15Okay.
17:16Thanks, dude.
17:17All right.
17:18Thanks a lot.
17:19Bye-bye.
17:20We'll give him a quote and see what we can do.
17:22Bye.
17:23Bye, bye.
17:26Bye.
17:27Bye.
17:28Bye.
17:29Bye.
17:30Bye.
17:31Bye.
17:32Bye.
17:33Bye.
17:34Bye.
17:36Bye.
17:38Bye.
17:39Bye.
17:40Bye.
17:41Bye.
17:42Bye.
17:43Bye.
17:44Bye.
17:45Bye.
17:46Bye.
17:47Nice.
17:48Bye.
