00:17goodness could we get a bigger bumper on the front of this thing holy crap
00:22what's this he's got the is that an aftermarket another fuel filter he's got
00:29up here that one right there by so much aftermarket stuff on this is there yeah let's fire it up
00:35you don't have blow by but man he's got a heck of a knock in that thing
01:00that does not sound happy do you know anything at the history of it or anything nothing
01:05okay let's get the front bumper off
01:30so
01:35so
01:41so
01:46so
01:51so
01:57so
02:02so
02:06what have you found yeah what is that it's a shoddy job is what that is
02:36did he weld that on there yeah you know I saw that when I was and my brain didn't register it
02:42well I'm also registering all the missing bolts I got but what's the deal there have we found anything
02:49else yet besides yeah hokeyness right here well there's a bell housing bolt that's just hanging out
02:54the only thing that kept that from falling out was the exhaust what's his hokeyness back here with
03:00all this messed up wiring yeah that's an air pump for air ride oh he's got air ride on this thing
03:05duallys oh okay all right well looks like you're shredding it pretty good man where's the one you're
03:10putting in it is it hanging over there is that the one hanging over there no I think it's over
03:13in the wire the one we're putting in here has got some upgrades too right this just got switched over
03:18to me and I just been trying to get it in so I just got it in this morning well he's got one he's
03:22got a fence he's got billet caps on it he's got the girdle and all that stuff but he said
03:26it was one that you were doing and the oil pan wouldn't fit oh that's on another truck
03:30yeah that's that twin turbo okay I was like why is he doing that if this guy's okay
03:56missing starter bolt got the wrong starter bolt in the other hole so
04:15so
04:19so
04:22so
04:27so
04:36I don't know.
05:06What is that?
05:20What the heck?
05:21This is nasty nasty.
05:23Well here's some that don't look right.
05:27All this extra silicone in here.
05:29Look at this.
05:30Same thing again.
05:31Somebody has resealed this pan and used way too much silicone.
05:35Should have been a plugged up piston squirter.
05:37Got a piston all hot and it cracked the piston.
05:40Didn't have a lot of blow by though man.
05:42It did have a lot of noise.
05:44It's all yours.
05:45Oh shit.
05:46I'll just see if I can see anything dark and I can't.
05:50Well I guess we'll finish tearing it down and we'll find out what the deal is.
05:57This is Dave up at Dave's Auto in Centerville.
06:18Yes sir.
06:19I'm the owner here and I'm getting in the middle of this because Matt my service rider
06:23was telling me a story about this truck that you guys had had the crankshaft ground and
06:28a piston and a rod replaced.
06:29Is that, am I getting that correctly?
06:31Yes sir you are.
06:32Are you familiar with that ticket?
06:34You know that repair?
06:35Were you, because I'm assuming this is a work truck.
06:38It's a work truck.
06:39I bought it from a buddy of mine that had it, had very low miles, mechanics supposedly
06:45took the crank in, we sent the crank in, had it turned, put new mains in it, put one piston
06:49in it and sent it off and it didn't last very long.
06:52So did you buy the truck, had the motor already been done by this mechanic shop or did you buy
06:58the truck and then have it done?
07:00I bought the truck, it was already broken and then we attempted to get it fixed.
07:05Oh I got, okay.
07:06A thousand miles it ran and then it started knocking and we parked it.
07:10I kind of wonder, was the truck making a rod knock noise?
07:13Is that why they just did the crank and the piston and the rod?
07:16That's kind of like just a bandaid on a, you know, I'm, I mean.
07:19No I know, I think they band-aided it to be honest with you.
07:22I mean was this a machine shop or just a general shop and he probably had the.
07:26We went to a machine shop and then the machine shop sent him the parts and he put it together.
07:32Let me, let me bring you up to date and tell you where we're at with it.
07:35We got the motor out yesterday or the day before.
07:38It's in the machine shop.
07:39It has not been tore down today but my son or one of the other guys will be tearing down
07:44the engine and doing a digital inspection on it.
07:47So at that point we'll know a little more than we know right now about, you know, how
07:51the crank was ground, you know, what kind of quality all that work was.
07:54But I can tell you that whoever resealed this motor up and did the install was terrible.
07:59That's why I didn't even deal with the guy anymore.
08:02Everything he's touched has been garbage.
08:04Yeah, I mean there's missing, there's missing bolts, ground straps not put back on, hardware
08:11that's not only missing but the wrong strip, you know, it's like some 12 year old kid did
08:15this to be honest with you.
08:16So, I'm sorry.
08:17I believe you.
08:18I believe you.
08:19Yeah.
08:20All right.
08:21Well, I'll tell you what we're going to do.
08:23We're going to go ahead, we're going to rip the motor down and do our core inspection.
08:26We're going to find out a little more about what took this motor out and everything.
08:30And then Matthew and myself will probably get back to you about that inspection.
08:33We'll keep going.
08:34We'll also have a list of any other items that are needed for you.
08:38So, stay tuned and we'll be back, we'll circle back to you here within a day.
08:42I appreciate you calling me yourself.
08:44Just keep me in touch.
08:45I need that truck.
08:46I got you.
08:47I've been bugging him.
08:48Appreciate it.
08:49Bye bye.
08:50You bet.
08:51I spoke to a customer on the phone.
08:52You know, the stories always get bizarre with, I mean honestly.
08:54So, he brought it up from, was it New Mexico or Arizona?
08:57And had it brought up to us because his mechanic down there, he couldn't stand the guy.
09:01But apparently, somebody put a crank kit, ground the crank and put one piston and a rod
09:06in here and he didn't even get a thousand miles out of it.
09:09We're going to tear this motor down and kind of find out why it failed.
09:13I got a feeling that whoever ground the crank didn't do a very good job because my son's
09:18a great crank grinder, but there are no good crank grinders left in this country that I
09:22can find.
09:23So, it'll be interesting to see what it looks like.
09:39So, uh, this one, this one, this one.
09:40And this one, this one, this one.
09:41This, this one, this one.
09:42Yeah.
09:43Oh, man.
09:44Can you thank the truck?
09:45It's just a little bit of a car quite a bit.
09:47You can, you know, that's a big jerk.
09:48You can take it.
09:49Much better.
09:50Yeah.
09:51You can take it.
09:52I got food.
09:53You can take it right.
09:54You're doing any of this.
09:55If you like, you can take it, you can take it right away.
09:56But you're probably not.
09:57Yeah.
09:58I got food.
09:59I got food.
10:00I like food.
10:01I got food.
10:02You got food.
10:03I'm not too much, I'm hungry.
10:04I got food.
10:05I got food!
10:06I got food.
10:07Let's get started.
10:37Holy crap, it looks like the babbit just came off of the shell, to be honest with you.
10:59I don't see dirt, I just see where the babbit failed.
11:04That's what happened to failure the first time.
11:07This thing threw a rod and that's the damage they didn't clean up, that will cut your hand.
11:13You can see where the rod came apart.
11:15It's a good place where they cranked a brake too.
11:17You know somebody out there, that's the other mains out of the other journals?
11:22Yeah.
11:23Is it the same brand?
11:24I think so.
11:25Oh DNJ, oh my gosh, cheapest bearing ever made, oh gosh.
11:31I've done a lot of motors.
11:32I've never really seen.
11:34That looks like a bearing failure.
11:35Yeah, it just does.
11:37So we're going to, this manual here, it's failure analysis book made by Automotive Engine Rebuilders
11:43Association.
11:44Great organization, I've been a member for, oh man, 25 plus years.
11:48It's not perfect, but it kind of gives us an idea.
11:51Let's look here and see if we can find something that will be helpful to us.
11:54This is what's messing me up.
11:55Now this would be my guess actually.
11:57The way, what could do that, because they've ground this crankshaft, if they didn't polish
12:01that correctly, the ferrite burrs will chew that bearing up and that bearing will polish
12:06that crankshaft.
12:07I guess we could do an RA.
12:08Well now it's polished.
12:09The bearing's polished.
12:10Yeah.
12:11If you look at some of this, you can see the recording from the grinding wheel.
12:14I think it's polished, is what happened.
12:18It didn't receive a polish?
12:20Yeah.
12:21Or they didn't polish it correctly.
12:22When you, when you grind a crank, the crank's turning one way and the grinding wheel's
12:26coming in and it's, and it's grinding that metal and it's making little waves that look
12:31like this.
12:32Looks like Velcro.
12:33Yeah.
12:34That's a good one.
12:35And so what you're polishing is, is you're turning the crank the other way and you're
12:38knocking that off.
12:39That, that Velcro, the, the fur.
12:41Ferrite burrs.
12:42Yeah.
12:43You can't see it, you can't feel it, but it's there.
12:46That's what he's talking about.
12:47Any crank that you grind needs to be polished.
12:49It looks like the bearing's been really hot.
12:52It's got this bluing on the edge.
12:54I mean, look, it's just kind of pushed the, the babbit.
12:57I mean, it just melted the babbit and covered up the oil hole.
13:01If anybody's got any idea why that one bearing looks like that, the journal looks fine, you
13:06know, chime in, man.
13:08Tell me what you think.
13:09Here's the other problem this block had.
13:11This is the piston that failed in the, in that hole and it also broke the oil squirter.
13:17That was sheared off and in the pan.
13:19You can see the rings are frozen in the land.
13:21I, I think maybe cheap parts.
13:25Cheap parts.
13:26And I, you know, I think that when they did have the failure, they didn't really clean
13:30it out.
13:31You know, they just threw parts in it because if you look at the old lifters, you can see
13:34all the material that was running through that.
13:36Yeah.
13:37Popped one piston and threw a crank in it.
13:39Yeah.
13:40Yeah.
13:41Popped wire and band aids, it'll get you out of the ditch, man.
13:44That's about all it's good for.
13:45Jason's about got this motor done and ready to put in.
13:48I mean, you do so many of these six sevens, you get pretty good at them.
13:51Okay.
13:52Look how clean all our, all our work is.
13:55This guy just wanted it kind of a gun metal finish.
13:58He's tagging all his bolts, he's torqued.
14:01These pans here, this, I'm going to show you this pan on the six seven.
14:03If you'll notice this gasket groove in here, that's what they did that up until 2014 on this,
14:09on the 6.7 power stroke.
14:11Then on the 2015 and newer, they got rid of that groove.
14:15And I'm thinking the reason that got rid of that groove is that's a tool path and that costs money to do that.
14:20If you can ever find a pan, I think this is a much better pan.
14:23This is a major, this is a common leak on the Ford six seven from 2015 on,
14:28because there is no pan rail there and you just use a gasket sealer.
14:40You good?
14:41Uh, to the right.
14:43Yeah.
14:44Just push it in.
14:46Up.
14:47Up.
14:48Up a little bit.
14:49Okay.
14:50Mmm.
14:51Okay.
14:52Hold on.
14:53We do so many of these.
14:56I think my guys could do them in their sleep, but that don't mean it's easy.
14:59Okay.
15:00This bolt hole is going to here?
15:01Yes, sir.
15:02Okay.
15:03Yeah.
15:04I could see that.
15:05Okay.
15:06Okay.
15:07It looks like we just got to go down about an inch.
15:09You ready?
15:10Yeah.
15:11Okay.
15:12Up just to here.
15:13What is this?
15:1613 millimeter?
15:17Yeah.
15:19But I got to align this torque converter up.
15:22Push it over that, you're going to, bring it your way a little bit.
15:28Hang on.
15:29Yeah, we ain't back far enough, dude.
15:31Okay, that's it.
15:32There you go.
15:33Hang on.
15:34You got it?
15:35Ready?
15:36There you go.
15:37Now let it down.
15:38There we go.
15:39That should be it.
15:44Sometimes it needs a little bit of finagling.
15:46That's the word of the day, finagle.
15:48All right.
15:49Cool.
15:59This is the 6.7 we got up and running.
16:05We took it on a test drive and heard a whizzing?
16:07Yeah, hiss.
16:08Hissing, which usually means a boost leak.
16:11Remember, condition, cause, correction, confirmed.
16:13So the condition was a blown up motor.
16:15We replaced it.
16:16We did all that.
16:17Then he was confirming the repair.
16:19During that confirmation, he's noticed something else.
16:22So we're going to smoke test the boost side of the system
16:26and find out where we got a boost leak.
16:28So it could be something that we did, a hose clamp, you know.
16:32That's why you have to check your work.
16:34Or it could be something else that was already broken
16:36that the customer never fixed before, you know, the engine blew up.
16:39And we just didn't see it.
16:41These do have a plastic manifold on them and they do break and crack.
16:45So we'll check that out.
16:47Let's check it out, man.
16:48Well, it doesn't look like he has a leak, bro.
16:50It doesn't look like it, does it?
16:52No.
16:53Pull that out of there.
16:54Make sure.
16:55Have you got pressure in there?
16:5610 psi.
16:57Dude, it might just be a loud intake.
17:00Yeah.
17:01Just a loud intake?
17:02Well, it's boosting.
17:03It's so freaking hard.
17:05It boosted it so hard, I blew apart that hose.
17:08See that new hose right there?
17:09Uh-huh.
17:10And it blew it to pieces.
17:11I mean, I didn't even get in front of the other shop.
17:14All right, let's get it together.
17:16Take it for a ride.
17:17So we've got a check engine light on this.
17:20The guy has a tune on it.
17:23And this tune doesn't even support the 450 chassis.
17:28We're going to test drive it.
17:29He's also got all his DPF stuff just taped to the frame hanging there.
17:34You know, this is where I'll have to have a conversation.
17:36We've put a motor in it and it will not function correctly with the tune that he's got on here.
17:44And that is a concern for me as a motor builder because excessive soot buildup, you know, on the rings, all these things can cause my motor to suffer dire consequences.
17:58I'll put it that way.
17:59We've done our job.
18:00We'll find out if he's interested in getting the proper tune on here and the components to make this truck function the way it was designed to do.
18:08Well, the engine sounds real good and he's also got a clock spring issue.
18:12I can't reset his oil stuff through his computer here.
18:16There's some other things that trucks need.
18:18When you get it up and running and you take it for a test drive, it's in your best interest to make sure that you document all these conditions that can be a problem,
18:28not only for the work that you performed, but, you know, for stuff you didn't even touch, like, you know, the clock spring and the steering wheel.
18:34We'll take it back, we'll make some notes, call the gentleman and see if he wants to get the rest of this fixed now that we've got a motor up and running.
18:41Anyway, thanks for watching and happy Memorial Day.
