00:00That ain't supposed to be in there.
00:02It's fun too, right in the house. Look at that.
00:04It has destroyed that house.
00:06Sometimes the crank didn't break.
00:13So what we're doing here is,
00:15we don't like using used engines,
00:17but when we do, we want to do everything possible
00:21to ensure that we got a viable motor for our customer.
00:24Usually a used engine comes out of a vehicle.
00:27This is how you get them, especially on something new,
00:29like a 2016.
00:31Yeah, this is a 2018.
00:33So you're going to get a used engine
00:35on a 2018 5.0 Cummins out of a Nissan Titan
00:39only because one has been wrecked.
00:42And I mean wrecked good because that's an expensive truck.
00:45Oh, look here.
00:47Yeah, this car has been a wreck, dude.
00:49Let me show you here.
00:51See this bolt here that's been sheared off in the front cover?
00:53Yeah.
00:54Some sensor here.
00:55Look at the motor mount bolt here.
00:57Okay?
00:59The rest of it, I mean, you know, it's okay.
01:02Go get a hammer.
01:03Just knock that thing off of there.
01:04Okay.
01:05Or you could use your air hammer and a chisel, you know,
01:07and just cut that thing off.
01:09Whatever you feel big about.
01:14Got a big pry bar?
01:15Come back here.
01:16This will be a learning moment.
01:18Bringing my toolbox closer.
01:19What was that?
01:20Bringing my toolbox closer.
01:21So good, dude.
01:22So good.
01:25Every move you make, every step you take.
01:27And, you know, especially with the young,
01:29they're not going to get it the first time.
01:31You're just going to have to keep at them.
01:33I mean, it's people wonder how you mentor people.
01:37You just got to stay at it.
01:39And try to be as polite as possible.
01:41Look, dude.
01:42Give me a big old hammer.
01:43You need to get busy with that thing, dude.
01:45Give me that hammer.
01:47My legs are too sore to bend over.
01:50Well, an oil filter is like a tin can,
02:02but that's a tough old tin can.
02:04But, I'll take a little sample of this paper with me.
02:08Go ahead and cut that off.
02:11See, that's good.
02:13I've got no metallic in the oil filter.
02:20See how it's all smashed up in here?
02:24Yeah.
02:25Where it got jammed up.
02:26We're going to have to replace the timing cover.
02:29Let's get a steam clean.
02:50Hey, this is part two of this five-liter Cummins
02:57in a Nissan Titan that blew up and was so trashed
03:02that we couldn't rebuild the block.
03:03It spun mains.
03:04It was just, it was a pile.
03:06The customer has asked us to try to keep his budget in mind,
03:10and the only way we can hit his budget is with a used engine.
03:13Everybody out there knows how I feel about used engines.
03:16I mean, honestly, they make me nervous.
03:20But, here we go.
03:21Take a look at this used engine.
03:22I'm going to show you what we're going to do to check it.
03:24We got this from my supplier.
03:26This is a five-liter, and it's a used engine.
03:28They don't know how many miles.
03:29The thing was a total wreck, so we don't have any mileage on it.
03:32First thing I noticed when they sent it to me,
03:34I tore the manifolds off of it.
03:36It's got a lot of buildup like they do on the intake valve.
03:40So we're going to clean that.
03:42You know, I'm going to clean that and everything,
03:44but what we want to check first is really is the motor in good shape.
03:47The only way we can do that is by putting it in my sim test machine here,
03:51and we're going to run it.
03:52And before we do that, we're going to borescope a couple of these holes.
03:56I want to take a look at some of the cylinder walls.
03:58Watch how slow I can turn this diesel,
04:02and I can put any piston anywhere I want.
04:05Obviously, I want to drop the piston all the way down in the bottom of each stroke
04:10so I can inspect the entire cylinder wall.
04:13So here's our cylinder wall, and the piston's all the way down.
04:17I see a little bit of surface.
04:18Now I'm going to turn it around here.
04:19I'm going to try to look at it.
04:21This is not perfect, but we can get a pretty good shot of the entire cylinder wall.
04:28Nice crosshatch.
04:30No terrible-looking marks on the cylinder wall.
04:33There's my injector tip.
04:36Here's the valves.
04:38All looks pretty good.
04:41We're going to inspect all eight cylinders.
04:44You've got a broken root.
04:46Okay, now this cylinder is making me a little nervous.
04:50This cylinder's had a little bit of water in it.
04:52Now, is that a problem?
04:54I mean, it is a junkyard motor.
04:56You know, I've got to kind of make decisions here.
04:59This has got me concerned here.
05:01Vertical lines, I guess.
05:03That's the ring land right there.
05:05That's the head gasket.
05:07Boy, that is a mess there.
05:09You've got ring problems.
05:10Yeah, we've got a problem here.
05:12Look how much gunk is up here between where the top ring comes up to the cylinder wall.
05:18And there's the head gasket area right there.
05:21So this much area on this hole, the cylinder wall doesn't look good.
05:25Even this one?
05:38See, that's a concern to me.
05:40Only 200 psi and a diesel.
05:42That ain't good.
05:43And let's check another one.
05:49I still hear it out of my breath.
05:51Where'd that go too?
05:53200.
05:54Yeah, I think what we do is walnut shell blast this thing.
05:57Okay.
05:58And let's go ahead and make sure we've got 200 in the other holes.
06:01Okay.
06:02My cylinder wall is a little bit of water on the wall, but I don't see any terrible issues.
06:06And I've got a lot of valve buildup.
06:08I'm going to go ahead and pull it out of my sim test machine.
06:10We're going to walnut shell blast those intake valves and see if we can get the compression to come up.
06:15Sitting around like that, we could have carbon under one of the valve seats.
06:18So I don't want to condemn the motor.
06:19But again, I'm doing all this stuff on a used engine.
06:23But I don't know a better way to help a customer out to meet their budget and feel at least some amount of confidence that I've given them a decent product.
06:33So we'll keep trying to make this one okay.
06:36We've got a walnut shell blast here.
06:37Let me show you how this works.
06:38So the walnut comes up through here.
06:40Here's the filter.
06:41This is the waste.
06:43This has been used.
06:44We're injecting the walnut here and vacuuming it out there.
06:47There you go.
06:59And you can see that one hole.
07:00How clean that got that.
07:02So it looks like you've got all this walnut shell blasted.
07:05And we re-ran the compression test.
07:07And we're 200 psi on all cylinders.
07:09We've got good oil pressure.
07:11I'm confident now that we've got a good, as good as we can test it, for this 5.0 Cummins.
07:17What else do you think we need to be aware of before we go sticking this motor in?
07:21I'd like to be doing some seals on it.
07:23Yeah.
07:24Got a new rear main seal in it.
07:25I think we ought to take the heat shields off the exhaust to make sure we don't have any,
07:28not only exhaust bolts that are missing, but be looking for blackness where maybe we have
07:32a little exhaust leak.
07:33You know what I mean?
07:34Mm-hmm.
07:35Remember, God gave you five sensors.
07:36You want to use them all.
07:37You did a nice job.
07:38Let's check this out here, man, on this walnut.
07:40Oh, man.
07:41Yeah.
07:42Look at that.
07:43Look how clean that is all the way down in there.
07:45That's beautiful.
07:46Let's see.
07:47Oh, yeah.
07:48Look at that.
07:49Beautiful.
07:54Boom.
07:55Boom.
07:59Boom.
08:05Boom.
08:19Big, big!
08:20Boom.
08:23Ah, ah.
08:46Oh, man.
08:53Now, this Cummins couldn't rebuild the motor, it was junk.
09:03And so we found a used motor, they're not cheap, Sim tested it, compression was off
09:09a little bit, and of course with these EGR, you know, the intake valves were just carbon
09:14up.
09:15So we just walnut shell blasted all the intake and exhaust valves, retested it, compression
09:20came back up, bore scoped the holes, engine looked great, ran it in the sim test, everything
09:26passed, put it in the truck, runs great, and now we got a tranny leak.
09:31Remember, condition, cause, correction, confirm.
09:34And if a shop doesn't take a good test drive and really check not only their work, but the
09:39way the rest of the systems are working, if you ship that car and there's a known problem
09:44on it and the customer comes back, you own that thing.
09:48Take that extra time and confirm your repair, and if there's other issues, document them,
09:53advise the customer, and you'll save yourself a lot of headache.
09:56Let's hear it run.
09:57Woo, dogey.
09:58Loving that.
09:59Nice.
10:00All right.
10:01Taking on a good test drive, after we fix that tranny leak, we'll deliver a truck.
10:15We'll deliver a truck.
10:16Yeah.
10:17This truck, you know, I'm finding out that these Nissan Titan, they made this Duramax in
10:22them for, what, three years, we figured?
10:23Yeah.
10:24The Cummins.
10:25Yeah, the Cummins 5.0 for just three years, right?
10:27Yep.
10:28So what we're also finding out is no one is making any parts for them.
10:32We had the tranny leak, not leaking out of the pump O-ring.
10:35It's leaking right out of the, between the reaction shaft, the input shaft, here where
10:38the torque converter goes in.
10:40If you look at this bushing here, if any of you guys work on cars, you'll know that I
10:43shouldn't be able to push that bushing in with my fingers like that.
10:46Now the inside of this bushing, it grabbed a little bit.
10:49You can see that there, where it grabbed it, but it's not totally wore out.
10:54So I'm going to shim the outside of this bushing.
10:57Now listen, the reason I'm doing this, that tranny is $12,000.
11:03I cannot find one.
11:05I'm not buying a used one.
11:06So I'm going to shim this bushing so that it fits in the housing.
11:10If you look in the dealer, you go to the dealer, they make an oil pan gasket for this
11:13transmission, a gasket between the transfer case and the tranny.
11:18And that's it, man.
11:19You know, five, six years old, and I can't buy a stinking tranny seal.
11:24So we're going to shim this, and then we're going to put this seal that we found.
11:28It seems to fit.
11:29Let's go ahead and get this done.
11:31A lot of people wonder, like, how come my shop doesn't do this and doesn't do that?
11:34I mean, sometimes this stuff, you know, it's not like you just call the parts store and
11:38say, hey, man, send me over a part, and everything's good.
11:41Sometimes you've got to think out of the box and be creative.
11:43If you want to give me a minute, I could probably find a cam bearing on my...
11:46You think?
11:47I mean...
11:48King's got a pretty good catalog.
11:49Before I try to shim in that, I'm going to slow down here.
11:51I'm going to get in a bearing catalog with, like, King bearings, their cam bearings, and
11:55see if I can get an OD to fit right, and I'm going to do a little more research.
11:59So you know, we're at 49.5mm, so we're going to look for a 50mm OD.
12:05And then the ID on this is 46.5mm, 46.7.
12:13You know, we've been over this.
12:14I did more shorts on this than I've ever done on anything.
12:17We're glad that we've been able to work out some contention between some other social media
12:22people about this.
12:24Again, the manufacturer does not provide the input seal for this transmission or the bushing,
12:31but through a great company in St. George, St. George Transmission, they had done this
12:38training before in-house, and they knew some of the part numbers, and they got us the correct
12:42seal and a bushing.
12:45Another shout out to them.
12:46Thanks, guys.
12:47So, we're going to deburr this bushing a little bit.
12:55Okay.
12:56Now, normally, I would pull this pump out and separate this reaction shaft and everything
13:01out of this thing in the back side of this pump and inspect it.
13:04We're not going to do that because I can't get any gaskets for this transmission, and I
13:08don't want to disturb anything more inside this tranny.
13:12So we're going to square up this bushing here, and then I'm going to drive it home with my driver
13:17here.
13:18Keep going.
13:19Keep going.
13:20Voila.
13:21Now, you want to make sure you don't cut your finger, but you want to make sure that you
13:31haven't rolled an edge in there.
13:32So we're going to test that right now.
13:34Let's grab the torque converter, and let's make sure we haven't rolled an edge that would
13:37keep us from that torque converter going in that bushing.
13:44There.
13:45Okay.
13:46So now I know I'm in the bushing.
13:49And what that bushing does, it keeps this torque converter from floating too much this
13:54way because the seal can't take up that float.
13:59I mean, so guys, remember that whether it's an input shaft on a transmission, a tail shaft,
14:05you know, if that bushing is wore out or the shaft that goes in that bushing is wore out,
14:09a seal is never going to fix your leak.
14:12Now we're going to put in the seal.
14:13Now, if you'll notice, the new seal has got a little bit of grease in there.
14:17But the outside, I want dry.
14:22See how I've got this seal now, scattywampus?
14:25There's a word for you.
14:26You don't want that.
14:27You want to try to square that up.
14:29That's why it'll go in there nice and won't get bound up.
14:33So start it, square it up, there, not pinched or anything.
14:42We're good to go.
14:43We'll put a little Vaseline on this input shaft seal here, line up our pump tangs.
14:49We'll slide that all the way home, get it installed, test drive it, woo-yah!
14:53This truck, the Titan, has been such an up and down, a craziness, and we finally got it
15:00done.
15:01It's completed.
15:02It's been on an 80-mile test drive, dry as a bone on that front transmission torque converter
15:06seal.
15:07And I looked up, I was just kind of thinking, why is the word Titan like?
15:10Why is this turned into something?
15:12And what is a Titan creature?
15:14Titans are ancient, gigantic creatures.
15:16Well this thing is not an ancient, it's only a 2018, but it was a gigantic creature in my
15:22life.
15:24And I hope that we all learned something from it.
15:26I know if you follow me on Instagram and Facebook and everything and TikTok, that this thing got
15:32a ton of views for not the right reason at first.
15:35But in the end, we've sparked a change in the industry where we can all help out.
15:40I hope you enjoyed what we've done here.
15:42Most famous Nissan Titan owner probably in the United States.
15:45Aaron, tell me why you brought me the truck.
15:47I brought you the truck because I called Nissan, couldn't get help.
15:52I called a couple other shops, they're like, don't fix it.
15:55And then I started watching you guys and I figured this was the place to get it done right.
15:59So I'm grateful.
16:01I appreciate you guys fixing what you did.
16:04And hopefully I get more than 40,000 miles this time.
16:07We got the engine fixed and then it had the tranny leaking.
16:10What a nightmare the tranny was.
16:12I just want to ask you for the whole world to hear.
16:15Did we ever once call you and say, hey man, we're going to have to sell you a $12,000 transmission?
16:20Absolutely not.
16:21I got texts saying, hey, it's still leaking.
16:24We're figuring it out.
16:25We're going to try to get this fixed without charging you any more money for a transmission.
16:29Yeah.
16:30Finally had that shop I told you about down in St. George.
16:33Another shout out to St. George transmission, excellent shop.
16:37They helped us out.
16:38They got us the right seal and it's bone dry.
16:41Aaron, thank you so much, man.
16:42Thanks for taking care of me.
16:43Really appreciate it.
16:44Yep.
