00:21Find out.
00:22It's Jaffe vs. McIlroy and Holmes vs. Woodhull.
00:25Coming up next, only on Showtime Championship Boxing.
01:02My position on arm control is every man for himself when you go toe-to-toe with me.
01:09Also in the running from the WBC party is title holder Keith Holmes.
01:13The tall, smooth southpaw is planning to debate with fisticuffs
01:17against the determined number one contender Richie Woodhull.
01:20Everybody needs national health insurance, especially when you step in the ring with me.
01:26It's William Jaffe vs. top-ranked contender Ray McIlroy for the WBA middleweight title.
01:32And Keith Holmes against England's undefeated Richie Woodhull for the WBC Middleweight Championship
01:38to see who will become the commander-in-chief of the middleweight division.
01:42Live from the Showplace Arena outside of Washington, D.C.
01:47on Showtime Championship Boxing.
01:50And with the presidential election less than three weeks away,
02:09it's only fitting that tonight we come to you live from the shadow of our nation's capital.
02:15The scene is the Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, just minutes away from Washington, D.C.
02:21And tonight, the spotlight falls on the middleweights as two hometown favorites defend their coveted titles.
02:30Hello again, everybody. I'm Steve Albert.
02:32Welcome to this late-night edition of Showtime Championship Boxing.
02:35We're coming to you at an unusually late hour so as not to conflict with Game 1 of the World Series,
02:40which was scheduled for tonight.
02:41However, as you know, because of the rain in New York, it has been postponed until tomorrow.
02:46We're glad you could join us for this middleweight championship doubleheader,
02:49which features two local Beltway residents, both making their first title defenses.
02:54We will also have a report and interviews with Mike Tyson and Team Tyson
02:58concerning his upcoming bout with Evander Holyfield on November the 9th.
03:02Well, we'll kick things off with undefeated Maryland native William Joppy,
03:06an exciting fighter who combines substance and flesh.
03:09He'll defend his WBA middleweight title against Ray Charles McElroy.
03:13Then in our nightcap, it'll be Keith Holmes, a slick southpaw originally from Washington, D.C.,
03:18defending his WBC middleweight belt against undefeated number one contender Ritchie Woodhull of England.
03:24Both Holmes and Joppy could be on a collision course to unify the middleweight championship.
03:29But there is another part of that middleweight equation, not to forget Bernard,
03:32the executioner Hopkins, who is currently the IBF 160-pound champion.
03:36Hopkins has 30 wins, two losses, and one draw with 23 KOs.
03:40One of those losses to Roy Jones via 12-round decision.
03:43He won the title over Segundo Mercado last year in nearby Landova, Maryland.
03:48Meanwhile, William Joppy, the WBA title holder, an impressive 22-0-1 with 18 knockouts,
03:53and WBC champ Keith Holmes, 29-1 with 19 knockouts.
03:58His only blemish just eight fights into the career.
04:00He's won 22 in a row since his lone defeat.
04:04The last undisputed middleweight champ, marvelous Marvin Hagler, back in 87.
04:09This, a division in search of a star.
04:11Interestingly, the weight classes above and below have recognizable stars,
04:15but not the middleweights, formerly one of the glory divisions of boxing.
04:18As we bring in the fight, Dr. Ferdy Pacheco.
04:21And, Ferdy, how do these 160-pounders get themselves back into the spotlight?
04:25I think the only way to do it, because there's such a dearth of talent, name talent,
04:28they've got to fight each other.
04:29They've got to unify.
04:30And that step then leads to either going up against Roy Jones,
04:34a dismal prospect there because he's dominating the scene,
04:38or to go down below in that minefield of talent that they got with Frankie Randall,
04:42Purnell Whitaker, Chavez, and so forth.
04:45For the first time since I can remember in recent memory,
04:48I've never seen the middleweights so depleted of genuine talent as they are now.
04:52These three men that are now holding the titles are the best,
04:55and Joppy may be the best of that best.
04:58Well, Ferdy, one thing that the middleweight division may need to spice things up
05:01is a little controversy.
05:02And while hype is often a big part of this sport and its promotion,
05:06there does exist a professional rivalry between the two local area residents,
05:10Keith Holmes and William Joppy.
05:11You see, the two fighters used to spar together,
05:14with Joppy clearly dominating.
05:15But Holmes claims it was over three years ago,
05:17when he was only 147 pounds, thereby making it irrelevant.
05:21On top of that, Holmes says he's not a gym fighter.
05:24He saves it for fight night.
05:26It's a rivalry that was evident at a recent press conference.
05:29Take a look.
05:31If man keep on with me in the ring,
05:34if man keep on with me over a dozen times, right or wrong,
05:38the same result that happened in the gym would be the same result in the fight.
05:42Y'all take it from that.
05:43When I spar and I train, I do this to learn.
05:47Whatever happened in the gym,
05:49whatever happened in the gym, let's leave it there,
05:51unless you want to bring it out like you did.
05:53But, but, what really counts is in front of thousands of people.
06:00I'm a man, if anyone, people who come to me and say,
06:03this guy said something about me,
06:05don't believe it because I'll tell you in your face.
06:07I never, ever said anything behind anybody's back.
06:11Never.
06:11And you can quote that.
06:13Never.
06:13I respect Keith Holmes.
06:16And just like he said, whatever happens in the gym, that's in the gym.
06:18Whatever happens behind closed doors, that's behind closed doors.
06:21But just like I said, what happened in the gym,
06:23it's going to happen in front of millions of whoever watching.
06:26Ain't nothing changed.
06:27It's going to be the same result.
06:28So, it's not really antagonistic, but competitive.
06:32As we welcome Bobby Ches, get your reaction, your take on this rivalry.
06:35Is it a distraction or is it healthy?
06:37We know if the rivalry is genuine and there's real animosity between two fighters,
06:40emotions will run high.
06:41If those emotions cross over and interfere with either of the fighters' game plans,
06:45it could affect the fight and distract both fighters.
06:47At the same time, the flip side of that coin is this.
06:49Their emotions could run high, bring much more focus into the fight,
06:52bring them to another level, and be a positive grudge.
06:55But usually when these matches come to pass, the better fighter wins.
06:58The biggest grudge has no relevance.
07:00And you know what?
07:01It almost makes you wish they were fighting each other right here tonight.
07:04Well, for Holmes and Joppy to settle their differences, each must win tonight.
07:09And it all gets underway with William Joppy versus Ray Charles McElroy for the WBA middleweight title.
07:14That's our first bout of the night here at the Showplace Arena in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
07:19And let us take you behind the scenes into the dressing room of the champion.
07:23There he is, William Joppy.
07:24While tonight, Joppy gets to perform in his own backyard,
07:27he went a long way from Tacoma Park, Maryland to bring home the belt.
07:30Joppy agreed to meet Shinji Takahara on his turf, Yokohama, Japan.
07:38I'm in his hometown.
07:40He's from Japan.
07:42He was a champ.
07:43I had to go in his backyard and take it from him.
07:45And there wasn't nobody looking for me to do that.
07:47Everything was against me.
07:49I was, you know, everybody looked at me to lose.
07:51He was used to that guy standing right there in front of him.
07:59I see the tapes that I've seen.
08:00So my game plan was to give him some movement, which confused him.
08:08I was trying to hit him with the left hook, but it seemed like he practiced to get away from it.
08:12But my right hand was landing all night.
08:21And that's what I knocked him down with the first round with.
08:23Right hand.
08:27I knew I had him.
08:28That's what the first round I knew I had him.
08:29It was my fight.
08:30Everybody was saying he was strong.
08:37So I didn't want to take a chance early in the fight to sit there and bang with him.
08:43So I boxed the move.
08:51I was clowning with him, you know, doing the shuffle.
08:53So he tried to do it.
08:56He was trying to psych me out with all his hot dogs, but it was psyching him out.
09:02I almost had him in the fifth round.
09:04He got away.
09:07He grabbed me.
09:09And when I was throwing my punches, he grabbed me and the ref came.
09:13He got away.
09:14The beginning part of the ninth round, I was still moving a lot.
09:23But toward the end, that's when I started going toe-to-toe and I got him out of the game.
09:28I cornered him in the corner and knocked him out.
09:30There was no better feeling, man.
09:42It was the greatest feeling I ever had in my life.
09:45I did cry.
09:46But nobody seen me, though.
09:48Yeah, it was the happiest feeling in my life.
09:50I never felt that good.
09:53I can't explain it.
09:54That's how great it was.
09:56Winning the world title over in somebody else's country.
10:00I mean, that's something different.
10:05Well, Purdy, should we be impressed with Joppy winning in Japan and his undefeated record?
10:10I'd be impressed.
10:11The kid goes all the way across the ocean, takes apart the champion in an impressive fashion
10:15with a win by TKO on the ninth.
10:18Yeah, I would say that's impressive.
10:20I'm impressed with Joppy.
10:21I think he's the best of the three champions we have now.
10:24All right.
10:25And on the flip side is Ray Charles McElroy ready for the championship level,
10:29particularly after some 22 months of inactivity, which ended earlier this year.
10:33Bobby, your read.
10:34Well, I'll tell you what.
10:35On paper, not just the 22 months that he's laid off, but on paper, the quality of opposition
10:39he's beaten does not say he warrants a world title shot that he's risen to this level yet.
10:43However, after talking to him in the interviews, he can certainly talk to talk, Steve.
10:46Now we're going to find out if he can walk that walk.
10:49Where have we heard that before?
10:50Let's get a look at the challenger right now.
10:52Ray Charles McElroy.
10:54Originally from Beaumont, Texas, grew up in Long Beach, California, now lives in Las Vegas.
11:00A former number one rated American amateur.
11:02He had three wins over former middleweight champ Gerald McClellan of the Amateurs,
11:05as well as two tough decision losses to current IBF super middleweight champ Roy Jones Jr.
11:11Here.
11:41Ray Charles McElroy.
12:11Ray Charles McElroy, who in 94 quit boxing for almost two years out of frustration,
12:31nagging injuries, short notice bites, really taking their toll, feeling he was mismanagement.
12:36He now has a new team, which consists of three former UNLV basketball stars.
12:42In less than a year since coming back, he has three straight wins,
12:45and tonight a crack at his first world championship.
12:48And here is the WBA middleweight champion, William Joppy,
12:56whose first love was not boxing.
12:58Growing up on the outskirts of Baltimore, football was his passion,
13:02and then basketball as he became a high school standout.
13:04After a late start in boxing, age 21 of the Golden Gloves Championships of Maryland,
13:09he forged a successful amateur career,
13:11named the most outstanding boxer of the 92 Olympic trials.
13:15Then came the pros and the eventual world title.
13:18go!
13:26Go!

13:31All right, man.
13:32Go!
13:32Go!
13:33Go!
13:34Go!
13:34Go!
13:34Go!
13:35Go!

13:40Go!
13:41Go!
13:42Go!
13:46Go!
13:47I can't.
14:17so there he is the champ William jumping getting polite applause from what looks to be kind of a
14:27sparse crowd it seats about 5,000 here this is originally an equestrian arena racetrack right
14:34outside the doors and looks like they're about half full so let's check the numbers now as we
14:42take a look at the tail of the tape at 26 Joppy is three years younger than McElroy at six two
14:46McElroy with the four inch height advantage both under the weight limit and McElroy with the big
14:52five inch reach advantage WBA rules for this champ WBA rules for this championship fight
14:59scoring by the 10-point must system three judges will score no standing eight count the three
15:04knockdown rule is in effect only the referee can stop the fight a fighter cannot be saved by the
15:08bell except in the last round if an accidental foul occurs before the end of the fourth round the

18:18it's for the wba championship of the world gentlemen give me a clean fight let's keep it clean let's
18:23touch gloves all right let's do it
18:29final instructions from kenny chevalier working his first world title fight
18:34ray charles mcelroy whose career was on the ropes not long ago won three straight after the long layoff
18:39now out of nowhere a world title shot and he predicts a ko by three william jumpy the champion
18:46yet unproven unknown until he stopped the shinji takahara for the title he does have a flare and says
18:51look for the polo punch and the ollie shuffle he predicts a knockout by five here we go round one
18:57scheduled for 12 for the wba middleweight championship of the world the champion jumpy in the
19:04white trucks the challenger mcelroy in the red now mcelroy said that all the time he was off he
19:10trained throughout that two-year almost two-year layoff but he just wanted to wait out his contracts
19:14and get his fight management back together he just walked into a nice right hand but he said he just
19:18loves the game he's not in for the money but the glory he has his own business as a record producer
19:24but he says he just loves boxing but bobby two years out you can't substitute for two years of
19:29activity i don't care who you are william jumpy essentially a boxer puncher but he is slick he's
19:36exciting and he's fun to watch starts out relatively fast mcelroy's trainer leon washington expects
19:43choppy to come out aggressively to take ray out but he says that that will only make mcelroy fight hard
19:51leon washington was a hell of a light heavyweight in his day i've seen him fight many times and i'm sure
19:56he's worked with his men got him right and as you can see not intimidated mcelroy's coming right to
20:00choppy doesn't seem to be bothered and he's got a good hard jab does mcelroy he's following that
20:05jab in with other punches he's looking good right now meanwhile choppy makes good use of an educated
20:12jab as well choppy having some punch smiling as he goes downstairs to the body mcelroy counters to the
20:18body into the head with the left jab doubling up then he dicks into the body and back comes choppy with
20:23the right uppercut joppy taking a lot of unnecessary punishment i don't know why he's standing there
20:27because while he's fresh here in the first round mcelroy's popping hard punches those are not soft
20:32punches you know it's funny joppy said he likes to figure out his game plan after the second round
20:37but sometimes that might be just a little too late joppy just loading up with the overhand right
20:42mcelroy as you pointed out bobby a good talker he says though he'll inflict constant pain
20:48anything i don't think he can match skills with me and there's another heavy right hand by joppy the
20:55champion that's a good fight a good first round for both fighters mcelroy asserting himself at the
21:02beginning of this with a strong jab and now here comes joppy a little bit with that right hand good
21:06combination by william joppy and joppy controlling the latter part of this round mcelroy said this is not
21:13going the distance we'll see joppy's right hand right now is the controlling and dominant fact
21:19big right hand he's landing far too often for mcelroy to stay in this fight he's got to
21:23he's got to neutralize that right hand and counter back mcelroy able to land with the left hook
21:28then followed it up with a little bit of a flurry but didn't do much damage to the champion
21:33joppy no question about it fighting with confidence he's fighting oh there's that right hand he's
21:38he's fighting like he knows he's going to take this fight and he's landing that right hand with a fart
21:42joppy william joppy pouring it on there's another lead right by joppy in the final seconds of the
21:48opening round
21:54as we head for the bell
22:06look you're taking that right hand i know you're holding it you don't see it yet but you can't let
22:11him come close enough for you to throw that right hand in heels you understand you got to keep this
22:15jab working keep it in his face you can keep doing some of the things you're doing but you got to be
22:20more alert with his right hand he's got to come up a little more than you're doing it throw that right
22:24hand set him up and throw it i know you're a little wary about doing it right now but set him up he's
22:28there for it when he comes in just pop that right hand so you'll get off the way be quick with your move
22:33that's all you got to do stay alert see him let's take this look early in the round when joppy's
22:41combinations began to take uh shape see he hadn't been doing that up to then and then he just started
22:47and then that that was the menu he uh gave to mcleroy for the rest of the round william joppy comes out
22:55for round two he avoided a whipping and consistent right hand to the face and body of the challenger
23:03ray charles mcelroy very impressive first round for the champion william joppy very fast hands for
23:09combinations and on your toes type fighter with lots of head shoulder and leg movement there's another
23:15right hand straight right to the face of mcelroy by joppy they were both running right hands at the same
23:20time and in mcelroy's corner leon washington said you got to hit him with your own right hand you got to set
23:24him up i know you're a little leery of it right now but fired he's there for it so we're going to see
23:28what happens there's the left jab a stinging shotgun type jab by joppy we're seeing a lot of his
23:36repertoire here now wild miss by mcelroy with the left hook mcelroy's trying to re-establish a jab which
23:43is a good idea but the problem is he's coming over the jab joppy's coming over the jab with the right hand
23:50combination by joppy mcelroy now looking to hold on
23:58you notice mcelroy keeps taking his right hand and pushing it all the way over in front of his
24:01jaw on the left side try and catch the right hand counter but what he's doing is taking away power
24:06from his own right hand when he does that and joppy this is a look oh a big overhand right he looked
24:11to be off balance but he was landing while he was back pedaling and came back with a good hook to the
24:19body i mean i like everything i see about joppy
24:28now there's that lateral side to side movement by joppy he likes to dance around here's the whole
24:32ring oh a blistering straight right by joppy followed up by an overhand right and joppy with a
24:37glory right now mcelroy's in a little bit of trouble he's not really out yet but i'll tell you
24:42what a right hand by william joppy and that almost put him out his legs are not under him steve he needs
24:48to clear his head hold on and clear his head one more punch could do it mcelroy in trouble but he's
24:53showing heart mcelroy battling back trying to get him off but that right hand has found a hole there it
24:59is again another powerful right by william joppy back comes mcelroy also showing a pretty good chin
25:09you saw mcelroy right there digging on the inside not getting quite the leverage there joppy's getting
25:14what an uppercut the right uppercut by a william joppy joppy the wpa middleweight champ he says he
25:22watched keith home looking to get through mcelroy first mcelroy has come to fight let's say that he's
25:30losing this fight right now but he has come to fight no matter how much he gets popped by that right hand
25:35he's right back in and again something wrong with his hand there i think he got his fingers
25:40quite trying to pull the glove back might have got his fingers caught him inside the panning area
25:44blood dripping from the mouth the nose of ray charles mcelroy in the red trunks
25:49get him up he's got redness under both eyes open one eye he's taking a beating he is game
26:04how do you feel right i'm out please you're not my piece you're not bucket with that bucket at
26:11all right come in look great
26:14take this look man you're letting him get over that right hand on you understand look how you feel
26:25are you hurt you sure all right look you gotta work that arm more that left arm gotta work
26:32here we'll see two good right hands by the champion this is making all the difference in the world that
26:36one's early clean and you watch his legs his legs are a little weak under him not really there joppy comes
26:42back with another one over the top and he just keeps firing it and the right hand comes again in
26:48the end look at that now that buckled that buckle mcelroy i don't know what kept him up after that but
26:53he's tough mcelroy's tough job he told us he'll figure mcelroy out after two rounds see what he brings
26:59and then really get down the business and we'll see if that comes true here in round three
27:05william joppy looking very impressive but the challenger in red ray charles mcelroy showing a lot of
27:13courage oh another heavy straight right hand by joppy you can hear the crunching blows
27:19and the beautiful thing is he follows with a hook with a left hook he's always in there and there
27:23goes mcelroy digging back to the body counter punching and tripling up with the left hook instead
27:28of an under and over hook to the body and head mcelroy didn't reverse hook to the head bring your hands up
27:33and then drop the body and there another double left hook to the chin mcelroy keeps countering
27:37these hard punches by joppy and joppy's probably wondering what do i have to do to take this guy out
27:43you know i'll tell you what if mcelroy can sustain this type of pace in this type of fight even in
27:48losing his stock will go directly up well he's done nothing to lure it now he's in there in this fight
27:54every second of it this guy didn't go back his first world title shot 21 and 4 only nine knockouts
28:01now joppy with a sneak attack to the body mcelroy really getting evading joppy inflicting a lot of
28:11punishment but mcelroy showing a lot of determination he shows more determination he's got a lot of heart
28:18to come forward punching he's not just trying to save himself he's on the attack he's the one that's
28:23getting whopped and he's on the attack look out they stepped on one another and joppy nearly tripped
28:27potato yeah they tripped over feet and they got all tangled up but i'll tell you what right now
28:31joppy's doing a little bit of resting a little moving stepping outside mcroy's still coming forward
28:36but he's not being effective enough he's got to follow up that jab and slip some of those big shots
28:40and rip inside there's a little bit of a modified ollie shuffle by choppy and then a big uppercut that
28:48did not have much impact that was called a bolo in the old days again that was a big wide arc it
28:53didn't have any impact at all but it looks flashy against takahara he stuck out his left hand to
29:00distract his opponent and then shot out the right let's see if he does that here all right now he's
29:05playing i think he's resting here i think he shot an awful lot of ammunition in those first two rounds
29:10he's gliding and cruising here getting his second win as he marches forward on mcelroy marching in
29:18as the champion william choppy with a flurry mcelroy's trying to survive now right now i'll tell you
29:23what he is getting hit not just getting hit clean but something's going right through the glove which
29:28is positioned on his chin and i'll tell you what those punches still hurt fellas a holding caution by
29:32referee kenny chevalier to the challenge of mcelroy oh brother choppy just teeing off with a straight
29:38right right that right seems to have a magnet embedded in his face in mcelroy's face it just
29:46seems to not be able to miss with that right hand 110 seconds round three for the wba middleweight
29:52championship
29:56take a break hey hey hey hey
30:04relax with this thing about it relax open up relax give me the water relax something you know it's
30:09blowing out the mouth relax with the function okay now when you're gathering herbs love it go to the
30:15the body
30:26all right let's watch when their feet get tangled up here
30:30you know see he's stepping on them that's that's one of his mcelroy is stepping on top
30:34he's just trying to get himself together and get away from that could have been a disaster if he'd
30:38landed but the champion gets himself back together gets his feet underneath him he's got mcelroy against
30:46the ropes and you know he's just teeing off that right hand has been so effective there you see it
30:50again it's been getting through time and time again and that's really going to cost me if this fight
30:55continues much longer all right it is round four scheduled for 12 mcelroy in case you're wondering
31:00has been down three times in his career but he has come back to win all three including
31:05his last fight he hasn't been down yet here tonight
31:11and that is some kind of miracle because he has been hammered by all rights he should have been
31:16down at least once but he hasn't and now mcelroy comes out on the offensive in round four
31:22digging to the ribs they did some nice body work there but what he should have done
31:26is ripped right up with an uppercut down the pipe oh a beautiful left-right combination by
31:30jumpy above us and those punches landed there's another quick right hand by joppy who has very
31:38fast hands now toying throwing the left jab watch the back of the hand says kenny chevalier
31:48quite a story himself overcoming polio as a youngster and and now a world-class referee you know joppy has
31:56incredibly good reflexes great eyes he can see punches coming shift and move his momentum and
32:01his weight almost at will joppy coming on again missing with the right hand though
32:06and now we're cautioning to mcelroy who's holding too much says kenny chevalier i really don't see
32:12that that much i mean i really don't he's taking a big beating and he's fighting every minute barely
32:17barely does he put his hand back there mcelroy and despite taking a beating continues to come forward here
32:23bobbing and weaving trying to set something up with the jail you notice joppy's kind of slowed
32:29down the pace a little bit he seems to be looking to set mcelroy up a big one two or a one two three
32:36biding his time right now looking and picking his spot joppy the local favorite from maryland 22-0-1
32:42with 18 knockouts he's never lost tonight his first title defense look at these shots it looks like he's
32:48off balance but he's not choppy landing with the rights and a thumping body shop that was and he
32:55continues to come forward mcelroy able to duck away out of that corner
33:10mcelroy's eyes bloodshot from the punishment being inflicted by choppy yeah his whole face is red and
33:16kind of getting lumpy uh he's been bleeding for a little while from the nose and the mouth but
33:21he you know it's just that his eyes seem to to be dimming now please you almost get the impression
33:28that job he could turn it up anytime he wants but why hasn't he if he could turn it up and get it over
33:32it why wait and leave yourself in here to possibly get yourself hurt
33:37you can hear those body shots over our pa you can hear it thumping shots by william jumpy final seconds
33:48of round four going to the body out of the head is the champion choppy oh blow blow blow
33:57what's wrong ray take this water let me take this how you feeling rain talk to me tired rain huh
34:16all right get your second wind together here look you're giving these rounds away you understand you're
34:21coaching too much you can fight better than this you understand rain you can fight better than this
34:26stop coaching so much yeah let's take a look at those hooks of john john john can throw hooks from
34:36all sides that's the right hand here comes the hook and he just doesn't forgive any any on either
34:42side he's coming yeah and you'll see the low blow at the end you know mackleroy's just doing everything
34:49he can he's just swinging and he digs one down there you see it south with a left uppercut slash hook
34:54and he's just trying to do anything he can to get joppy off yeah and he was way off balance i don't
34:59i don't think none of that was intense it was way off balance he's throwing a low a punch to the abdomen
35:04no that wasn't it joppy in the white the champion predicted a fifth round knockout and here we are
35:09round number five joppy bringing the belt back from yokohama japan defeating the then champion
35:15shinji takahara with a tko in the ninth round an impressive fight and leon washington breaking one
35:22of the cardinal rules of angelo dutty in the corner never but never mentioned the word tired
35:27he came back he said are you tired oh a blistering straight right by joppy joppy makes such a nice
35:33move he slips the jab and he turns right over the top of the right hand and it's been landing all night long
35:38oh that's a low blow there's a left hook followed by a right hand by william joppy
35:44the left land of the right dead
35:48and i notice every time mcleroy gets hurt he digs his shot or two to the body which might be
35:52intelligent but he's got to drop his hand to do it and boy does he put himself in harm's way
35:56well mcleroy might be fighting on instinct here low blow by mcleroy with the corner you got one point
36:02he's taking a point one one let's go referee kenny chevalier has been warning mcelroy all fight long
36:10keep the punches up as if he doesn't have enough problems here against jump as if he's got any
36:15spares points to give i mean he's not winning any of these rounds it's a battle but he's not winning
36:20the rounds joppy continues to control this fight mcelroy if you're just joining us showing a lot of
36:28heart hanging in there and taking a beating you know bobby that's some kind of strategy if you stop
36:34to think about it as soon as joppy comes in to hammer he punches him below to come in you keep doing that
36:40and you're going to sap joppy's energy i mean he's lost the point so what you know he's trying and he's
36:46fighting back and mcleroy's doing everything he can i think it may come to a point where it's just
36:51a matter of joppy being too strong and mcleroy's reaching for whatever he can but he's fighting
36:55he's harder i'm a little surprised when joppy gets opponents in trouble he's usually a very good
37:00finisher he'll unleash a furious barrage of combinations hooks and uppercuts from all angles
37:05but thus far has been unable to put the challenger away well he has hit him with a variety of
37:13combinations and hard punches missing with that straight right hand joppy
37:25jumping never down in his career 23 pro fights
37:30i wonder where along in here ray charles mcelroy will decide that record producing is much much
37:37preferable to boxing he's got a good record producing company but boy what is happening
37:45to him tonight they're going toe to toe right now in the center of the ring with joppy once again getting
37:50the better holding and hitting by joppy that's not nice you know there's absolutely no quitting that
37:56boy but he just can't solve what's going wrong
37:59you let me boy take this fight from you race you're coasting too much you had him hurting there you
38:10didn't even see it you didn't even see what you did to him you hit him with uppercutting you didn't
38:14even see it you're not looking take your time and look at what you're doing right you want this race do
38:19you want this race you don't act like you want this race you don't act like it you fighting like it
38:24like you don't want to never get out this ring put them together race get that wind together and
38:29put this together fight this man you understand fight this man race get out of the way shoot them
38:35punches let's take a look at the low blow no question about it that it was a low blow but he'd hit him
38:40so many times blow he had to take a point that's definitely right on the cup i mean you couldn't
38:45couldn't ignore that plus the preceding numbers were so great every time joppy came in there went
38:52that local slow punches might be a strategy but it's not working for him an emotional speech by
38:58mcelroy's trainer leon washington between rounds we enter round six scheduled for 12 for the wba
39:04middleweight title joppy comes right out and again riveting combination of the body mcelroy fighting back
39:13as best he can yeah and as best he can it's pretty good i'll tell you what his best he could was not too
39:18bad right there that was a pretty even exchange and mcelroy has decided to take leon's advice and
39:23fight him and he might as well now while he's french this is if this goes long he's going to take money
39:31he might as well let it all go right now joppy punches just a little too hard and he's depleting
39:36the strength and energy from after with that with those bombs especially some of those body shots
39:40joppy's interesting to watch so you get the feeling if he presses a button and really attacks
39:49he's going to finish this joppy the champion of the white oh what a shot by joppy joppy with a
39:57straight right hand and what is keeping mcelroy up here's a flurry by joppy a barrage by joppy
40:03joppy smothering mcelroy mcelroy continues to stay up no only one or two of those punches go through
40:11clean keep holding you hold it let's go oh for a second we thought chevalier was stopping the fight
40:17he's just warning for the hole to mcelroy okay right now he's in a lot of trouble chevalier looking
40:24closely will he end it he's ready to jump in here's joppy all over i don't know what he's waiting for
40:30maybe he's too little what punishment here well you know what he is he steps in but the fight
40:36continues back comes joppy and now finally the referee steve the referee was watching very closely
40:42he was watching us a lot of those punches were glancing were clean but he watched very carefully
40:47mcelroy did fire back make an attempt to be offensive and that's why he didn't stop it he did an excellent
40:52job he was right on top i think he did an excellent job on that because as you say he was looking so
40:57close he was right in there his little face right in there and and mcelroy did punch back and i'm
41:02surprised the referee didn't catch one or two of those wild shots well i don't think he could have
41:06taken it you don't look big enough to take those punches i'm impressed with john this is assault by
41:12william jumpy well you said it before the fight you were impressed i had seen tapes of him of his fight
41:17in japan i was very impressed with him because he not only has substance but he also has a lot of
41:22excitement and he's a crowd-pleasing type fighter and nothing to be taken away from mcelroy he came
41:29here he was a little sacrificial dog he fought like a monster he really gave it a good shot and uh kudos
41:35to him for being able to accept the punishment and continue to come forward to fight that was the
41:40acceptable thing yes as bobby says despite the fact that he loses the fight his stock goes up because he
41:46showed terrific heart he definitely does he he fits he fits in any title picture and any uh top 10 type
41:54of contention fight yeah he fits so it's a tko unofficially 141 of round six for william jumpy
42:02you know he showed not only great heart and you'll never get rated just by your heart but he also showed
42:07some good offensive skill he showed some real talent and if he gets some of that fine-tuned and honed a
42:12little better he could be in any fight even at this level so william jumpy his first title defense
42:19remains undefeated now 23 0 and 1. he has 19 knockouts and now he'll sit back and see if keith holmes
42:27takes care of business against richie woodhull and our second co-feature upcoming which could set up a
42:32unification bout in 1997 between champion holmes meanwhile ray charles mcelroy slips to 21 and 5
42:40turned back in his first shot at a world title he had turned his career around earlier this year
42:45following a long and frustrating 22-month layoff but falls short tonight in his first bid for a world
42:51championship
42:57jobby unleashing a furious assault you know we're going to take a look in here jobby you know it's
43:02close here the referee could almost have stopped it some of the punches though just missing the not landing
43:07perfectly clean mcelroy mcelroy got his hand up over his face he blocked a few and you see some just
43:13missed but the referee was close he was right in there didn't want any holding uh maybe an over
43:18perfectionist the referee watching everything and then later the punches were too clean and you could
43:22see it was just a matter of a few more moments before mcelroy could get seriously hurt and as much
43:28as he talked the talk he tried to walk the walk only he couldn't unleash his mac attack very nice bobby did
43:35you work on that all day now the referee finally comes over and he's been just out of the picture
43:41you see him there jump in he was just off to the side you couldn't see him but we could see into his
43:45face watching live he was watching every second of the way he had his eyes glued to that of mcelroy
43:53so we're set for the official tie from our ring announcer here's jimmy lennon jr
43:58we have the time of one minute 41 seconds of round number six our referee in charge kenny chevalier
44:11stops the contest he's victorious in his first defense of his title and still undefeated wba
44:18middleweight champion of the world william joppy jr so there you have it william joppy
44:31retains his world boxing association middleweight championship raising his impressive record to 23
44:39oh and one with 19 knockouts his first defense of the wba middleweight title here at the showplace
44:47arena in upper marlboro maryland so it's one down one to go coming up next here on showtime championship
44:53boxing keith holmes versus top contender richie woodhull for the wbc version of the middleweight
44:58championship right now time for post-fight interviews from our first bout so we go up to the ring
45:04and here's the fight doctor ferdy pacheco well you told me in our interview yesterday
45:09that you expected a tough fight did you expect one this tough well you know he was tough then
45:13i thought first of all i want to thank god for getting me here because if it wasn't him walking
45:16with me i wouldn't be here as far as uh um mccleary ray mccleary he was tough than what i thought
45:22i thought we'll get him early in that but he came on but i knew within five or six i would get him and i
45:28i prefer with that you said you wanted to impress in your first step to our unification this is your
45:33first step toward unification and you did do an impressive fight but could you figure that guy
45:37could take that many right hands i mean you hit hard and this guy just kept coming i i hit definitely
45:42hard he was tougher than what i thought like i said but i knew he couldn't keep taking a punishment
45:47i knew i would get to him sooner like another point i'd like to look over and over we saw you get him
45:51on the ropes just as you came in he hit you low because he was trying to hit your body but after a
45:55while that's got to take a toll on you did that bother you keep getting hit low as you came in
46:00well you know i was just focused on what i had to do no it didn't really bother me
46:04i felt it me caught my attention a little bit but it just made me get angrier that's why i knocked
46:07him out he paid for uh let's let's look at this you you tell me what you're looking here's the
46:14referee breaking you up he's warning him for behind the head as you can see that's not now watch now
46:18now tell me what you see you come back let's see if we can see this roll any further go ahead
46:22and you're just going to go with that right hand go ahead well you know right here i had him on the
46:27rope i was going i thought barrage and punches i knew he wouldn't be able to take as much as
46:31punishment i was throwing to him and see kenny did the right thing by stopping it uh he was trying to
46:36hold me because that's the only way he could get to me hold me fight illegal but uh i got away from
46:41that and knocked him out i don't think it was illegal as much as it was survival where he's trying to
46:45save himself i trained hard so i prepared for that type and tight some tactics and there's the end of it
46:50justly done right on time i think he gave plenty of chance he gave the guy plenty of chance to
46:55get away and you didn't let him get away you know uh hey good fight ray ray right come on in
47:00here you know we got ray and uh we just finished looking at the finish of it i think it was stopped
47:05on time what was your take on on stopping the fight well i mean i was a trooper i knew i was
47:10seriously i was getting to him i mean if you look at the the film i wasn't in the middle i was hitting
47:15right above his gut line because i know i got him develop the muscles right there most guys don't
47:19and um i've been off for a little while i had about three fights in the last couple years
47:23i knew that if i was at my basic form i should have stopped him well i i tell you what you took
47:28more right hands than i think anybody any human being has a right to take without getting knocked
47:32off your feet and eventually he got to you it was a good middleweight title fight it was stopped right
47:38and we commented all three of us on your bravery and the and the ability you had to keep coming
47:43forward in spite of those sledgehammer right hands and joppy landed a record number right
47:48hands i mean he hit but he don't hit that good i mean you know i mean i mean fine okay he won the
47:53fight but hey man let's do it again in about two more months two more months you want to be such a
47:57tough guy you know you're bragging about the stoppage but man stop it i believe it was really premature
48:01you know um i'd like to get back in there i'm sure i could stop you next time all right you look
48:05looking at the look at your your stoppage look at the stoppage i mean but look at this i mean the guy
48:10hit like a hit like a woman man i mean you know he hits he hits when he hit me so what i mean you
48:14know but he's like a woman that's powerful punch i don't believe he should stop the fight all right
48:19from that uh uh vantage point which we need neither one of us agree with right now it looks like you
48:24hit pretty hard i'm going to go back to rick's all right go back a couple a couple rounds go back
48:27last round i seriously got to one hit him with a serious right hand i didn't finish him he was right
48:31uppercut i didn't finish him but you know it's that's ring rust you know um cool i mean you know
48:36he didn't need to be shot for repair uh he's looking at the manager is mcelroy not seeing
48:42what we're seeing apparently but listen this could go on all night uh the point is the fight was well
48:48stopped uh both of you guys do it again when you want to but i don't think it's necessary you go on
48:52to unify the title joppy and i go back to uh ringside with uh steve albert and bobby chess
48:59all right thank you very much ferdy so uh mcelroy not a gracious loser meanwhile william joppy looking
49:10to rejuvenate the middleweight division well three weeks from tonight mike tyson defends his wba
49:18heavyweight title against former undisputed heavyweight champion evander holyfield a fight that was
49:25originally scheduled to take place back in 1991 but tyson pulled out with a rib injury shortly
49:33thereafter the fight was rescheduled but then tyson was arrested we will have more on that a little
49:38bit later but first let us go back up to the ring and the fight dr ferdy checo that was such an
49:44interesting fight we want to talk some more about the wba middleweight championship before we get to
49:49tyson holyfield ferdy all right you what you did what i think was an excellent job what was your take
49:57on the finish of the fight and why did you stop it where you did the reason why uh we had uh the
50:03opponent ray who was uh constantly throwing punches back i believe joppy was landing a great deal of right
50:08hands throughout the fight he kept answering uh to the uh call of duty but when he's in the corner he took
50:13a lot of blows and it at that point this is a wba championship he's allowed to get this type of uh
50:21opportunity you know instead of stopping right at times because he still you see his eyes are still
50:25wearing he knows what he's doing you know he's getting hit yet he's trying to cover up once he's
50:29got answered with uh about four unanswered blows and basically those right hands it was time and it
50:34was due justice to call the fight as you see right here there's a right hand here's another one coming
50:38boom but there it is that's it that's it i think there's a person in this place including uh mckelroy
50:46who disagrees with you that was perfectly stopped that he had the opportunity to fight for the title
50:50which is what he what he did and when it came dangerous you stopped it did an excellent job i wish
50:55more people did it like you did just then thank you very much back to steve albert and bobby chez at
51:00ringside all right ferdy thanks very much uh i really don't think there was much controversy there i
51:07thought that chevalier did the right thing he was very patient he looked in he was right above us
51:11and he found the proper moment to make the stoppage you know steve i was watching him very closely as
51:16well as the fighters i think he allowed he allowed the fighters to fight the fight and he allowed mckelroy
51:20every opportunity to get back in the fight block some shots rest roll with the punches but there was a
51:26time when two or three of those clean right hands started to begin the end of the fight and it really was
51:31a signature time to just ease on out racing all right so that is that and we gave you a little
51:38preview a little tease just before we heard from the referee kenny chevalier here we are some five
51:44years later after uh holyfield and tyson was supposed to get together for the first time and finally
51:50they're about to get it on on november the night earlier tonight via satellite hookup from las vegas
51:55nevado we spoke with mike tyson and his co-manager john horn about the november 9th showdown with
52:01evander holyfield what has fueled bad blood between tyson and holyfield is the contention
52:05by horn that holyfield said back in 91 he wouldn't defend his title against a convicted rapist take a
52:13look john mike and evander were friends at the 1984 olympic trials but as you brought out during
52:20the recent press conference there is bad blood between the two is that bad blood genuine or is it
52:25just hype it's totally genuine and it's totally brung on by evander holyfield
52:30is the contention by horn that holyfield said back in 91 and evander were friends at the
52:36the recent press conference there is bad blood between the two is that bad blood genuine or is
52:41it by evander holyfield who does not want to stand up now to what he said and evander
52:47as a note of what mike is going on that's what mike do but as a man evander disrespected mike tyson at a
52:54time when he was down and out everybody in the world seen it we've been getting calls from all over the
52:57world from everybody who remembered the time when it happened they all felt the same way
53:01and even though he wasn't behind it or whatever the case may be instead of just being a man that he
53:05should be yeah he said it and going out there and fight anyway he he think we're he think we're saying
53:10this to try to hype mike up or something we don't have to do that mike knows exactly what he's training
53:15he's been waiting for this fight ever since these guys been amateurs that's as a professional
53:19as a man evander holyfield disrespected mike and that's why there's bad blood
53:23because of mike's feelings towards holyfield come november the night in las vegas will mike tyson
53:30be fighting angry or will he be able to control his emotions mike is a consummate professional he
53:37will never fight angry because that is that that won't serve his purpose that that won't achieve his
53:42goal his goal is to go in there and show the world he always does under the worst conditions no matter
53:48what the conditions are that he will perform to his highest ability as a professional he will never
53:54ever carry that emotion over into that ring except for to execute as he usually does as a man it still
54:01isn't over but as a fight mike knows what he has to do and that's what's going to take place in that
54:06ring event the holy is going to get knocked out all right john thanks for taking the time see you
54:11november the night thank you steve mike as john horn brought up there is bad blood entering this fight
54:19the interesting thing is you and evander holyfield were friends at the 84 olympic trials do you really
54:25dislike evander or is it part of the promotion listen my main objective is just basically fighting i don't
54:31dislike anyone but i just believe he's a hell of a fighter but i just don't think he can beat me
54:36will you be affected emotionally in the ring november the 9th against holyfield i doubt it very seriously
54:46i'm this is ferdy pacheco you know you had good you had uh four easy fights to be charitable about
54:53it the public now is clamoring to see a real battle are your juices running your blood getting hot to
54:58think you're going to get in there with a really tough ex-champion whose big reputation is his ability
55:03to duke it out with anybody well then well we're going to see how much ability he has to duke it
55:07out and like i said before i'm in great shape i'm ready and i'm looking forward to this mike bobby
55:13ches here i just have one question for you there's been a tremendous amount of speculation since your
55:18comeback to boxing are you better than you were before are you less than you were before are you
55:22the same mike tyson my humble estimation is that you've grown in size a little bit gotten a little
55:26stronger are much more focused and fighting smarter what i want to know is how do you feel with your
55:31performances now as compared to back in 91 when you were supposed to fight advantage the first time
55:36well you know i'm looking um i'm just looking to improve every time i get a chance you know um
55:41i'm reaching to um the plateau that i once was i'm just striving more and more so thank you mike
55:48all right thanks very much mike we'll see you in las vegas november the night thank you very much
55:54so there you have it a kinder gentler mike tyson in contrast to a john horn holyfield
55:59incidentally unavailable for comment perhaps out celebrating his 34th birthday which was today
56:04so the countdown is on for tyson versus holyfield a fight that is simply and aptly entitled finally
56:10it's a matchup between a fighter who's famous for his intensity and power mike tyson and a man
56:15admired for his courage and determination evander holyfield no matter what the odds holyfield is not
