00:00:00WBC women's belt. Congratulations. See you, Christy.
00:00:04Now that we've brought you up to date on the undercard,
00:00:07it's time to turn our attention back to the main event.
00:00:09The first encounter between Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno was a slugfest,
00:00:13but the events leading up to their first battle
00:00:15were as wild and turbulent as the fight itself.
00:00:18And perhaps the reason for the current bad blood
00:00:20stems from the rocky road to the ring some seven years ago.
00:00:30Now that we've brought you up to date on the undercard,
00:00:35it's time to turn our attention back to the main event.
00:00:38The first encounter between Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno was a slugfest,
00:00:41but the events leading up to their first battle
00:00:44were as wild and turbulent as the fight itself.
00:00:46And perhaps the reason for the current bad blood
00:00:48stems from the rocky road to the ring some seven years ago.
00:01:001989 was a year filled with personal problems
00:01:04for the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Mike Tyson.
00:01:08Problems that continually postponed his battle
00:01:10with British challenger Frank Bruno.
00:01:13I had broke my hand.
00:01:15I had problems with my wife at the time.
00:01:19I had gained like 70 pounds,
00:01:21and it was just crazy.
00:01:24I was just killing myself.
00:01:25You know, me spiritually, physically, intellectually.
00:01:28I was just a mess.
00:01:30Because then again, when I was 21, 20, 19,
00:01:33I thought, like, I really believed that I could beat the world.
00:01:35And I'm actually being beat the whole world,
00:01:38the whole 5 billion people at one time.
00:01:44And while Bruno tried to train diligently for this bout,
00:01:47the constant postponements and continual distractions
00:01:50took their toll.
00:01:52I did over-train, you know what I mean?
00:01:53When I went down, I lost stones, pounds.
00:01:57Mentally, I was exhausted, worn out, tired.
00:02:01You know, getting up in the morning,
00:02:02then the first was bunk, getting down,
00:02:04trying to get yourself up again.
00:02:06It was a nightmare.
00:02:07Finally, the two combatants met in the ring.
00:02:11Bruno's showing that he's not afraid,
00:02:12hanging on.
00:02:13Bruno's already tagged with the right hand.
00:02:15And there goes Bruno for the first time in the fight.
00:02:17The flash knockdown, I think, is more of a slip
00:02:19than a knockdown.
00:02:21If you see the fight, he didn't connect right.
00:02:23I slipped in the corner, he came.
00:02:25And I went like that.
00:02:27The referee can't do the knockdown.
00:02:29Sensing a quick finish to the fight,
00:02:31Tyson attacked aggressively,
00:02:32perhaps too aggressively.
00:02:35Tyson gets nailed for the left hook.
00:02:37Tyson looks wobbly as he attacks Bruno.
00:02:40Bruno continues to fall.
00:02:42Tyson was caught and wobbled.
00:02:44He hit me with a pretty good shot,
00:02:46but it was more solid than anything.
00:02:48I didn't avoid it.
00:02:49I knew I had him hurt,
00:02:51but he's a good fighter.
00:02:52You can't take nothing away from him.
00:02:53He was onto me like a harbor shot close to me,
00:02:56and I couldn't get the range of what I wanted to.
00:02:58Surviving that left hook and the round,
00:03:00Tyson took control of the fight,
00:03:02ending it in the fifth round.
00:03:05A fighter cannot be saved by the barrel
00:03:07as the big right hand lands.
00:03:10Tyson knows he's got a big goal.
00:03:12If he doesn't answer it,
00:03:13Richard Steele has moved in
00:03:15and has stopped the fight.
00:03:17Well, he was out on his feet, basically.
00:03:20And he took some horrific punches, I think.
00:03:24And the referee came and stopped the fight.
00:03:26For Bruno, this loss was so bitter,
00:03:30so devastating,
00:03:32he disappeared from boxing
00:03:33for almost three years.
00:03:36And while he used this time to train diligently,
00:03:39if not obsessively,
00:03:40he wondered if he still had a future
00:03:42in the sport he loved so much.
00:03:45Everything was going through my mind,
00:03:47different what I wanted to do,
00:03:48where I wanted to go.
00:03:49I was training not twice a day,
00:03:50I was training three times a day,
00:03:52running all the time,
00:03:53every gym I went in,
00:03:54I wanted to make myself stronger,
00:03:57get more better,
00:03:58practice different moves,
00:03:59and just wanted to get out.
00:04:01I just wanted to do it
00:04:02and see if I still had it in me.
00:04:04And I did.
00:04:05And it paid off.
00:04:06It paid off in a big way.
00:04:09For in his comeback,
00:04:10a more determined,
00:04:11more focused Bruno
00:04:12won eight out of nine bounds,
00:04:14including
00:04:15the WBC Heavyweight Championship
00:04:17from Oliver McCall
00:04:18and a chance at a rematch
00:04:20with Mike Tyson.
00:04:22I'm the champion,
00:04:23the WBC champion.
00:04:25He's going to try and take it off me,
00:04:26but he's only going to get a look at it
00:04:27because
00:04:28his time is gone.
00:04:30I don't believe that he believed
00:04:31that he's any better
00:04:32when he fought me back then,
00:04:34and I'm any less.
00:04:36I don't believe that he believed
00:04:37that he's better.
00:04:38He said he is,
00:04:39but I don't believe that he believed that he is.
00:04:41I'm just sure I could beat him.
00:04:45Mike Tyson is supremely confident
00:04:47that the outcome of the sequel
00:04:49between him and Frank Bruno
00:04:50will be the same as the first meeting.
00:04:53Well, it is nearly time
00:04:54for the main event.
00:04:56The seven years between fights
00:04:57have been a personal
00:04:58and professional rollercoaster
00:04:59for both boxers.
00:05:00And strangely enough,
00:05:02after all they've been through,
00:05:03Bruno and Tyson
00:05:04are at the crossroads again,
00:05:05and the heavyweight title
00:05:06is once again
00:05:07the prize.
00:05:151995 was the year
00:05:17that put long-time rivals
00:05:19Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno
00:05:20on a collision course
00:05:21for the WBC Heavyweight Championship.
00:05:24Four months after his release
00:05:26from an Indiana State penitentiary,
00:05:28Tyson surprisingly chose
00:05:30for his first fight
00:05:31Peter McNeely.
00:05:36And here we go!
00:05:38And McNeely,
00:05:39as advertised,
00:05:40comes right at Mike Tyson.
00:05:42Down goes McNeely!
00:05:43Second team of the first round!
00:05:46Nothing but broad!
00:05:50Tyson with a left hooker
00:05:51right up to the down
00:05:52goes McNeely again!
00:05:57That's it!
00:05:58That's it!
00:05:59He didn't quit at all.
00:06:01McNeely didn't quit at all.
00:06:02He didn't quit at all.
00:06:03He put his heart out.
00:06:06Despite the brevity of the bout
00:06:08and criticisms of the matchup,
00:06:11Tyson was pleased
00:06:12with his performance.
00:06:13I received confidence
00:06:14from just being in the ring,
00:06:16being around the mist,
00:06:18a great deal of fans.
00:06:19I knew after I got over
00:06:20that first fight,
00:06:21it was just smooth sailing.
00:06:23The smooth sailing, however,
00:06:24did not last.
00:06:26For just days
00:06:27before he was scheduled
00:06:28to meet Buster Mathis Jr.,
00:06:30the bout was abruptly canceled.
00:06:32Mike sustained an injury
00:06:37to his right thumb
00:06:38that would preclude him
00:06:40from fighting
00:06:40on Saturday night.
00:06:42My objective
00:06:43was to basically fight,
00:06:44but the pain
00:06:45became too intense
00:06:46and it continued
00:06:48hurting
00:06:49during sparring sessions.
00:06:51Six weeks later,
00:06:53Tyson finally
00:06:54met the light-hitting matchups.
00:06:56My thumb
00:06:58was never really
00:06:58totally healed
00:06:59when I fought
00:07:00Mathis Jr.
00:07:01in this way.
00:07:02It's come from
00:07:02the McNeely fight,
00:07:03didn't fight the title fight.
00:07:05I wanted to get
00:07:05as many fights
00:07:06as possible.
00:07:07Mike wants to go.
00:07:09He goes with the right-hand lead,
00:07:10danses him to the left hook,
00:07:11and Buster ducks
00:07:12underneath the next left hook
00:07:13that Mike has to offer.
00:07:14I was throwing a lot of left
00:07:16after catching to the right.
00:07:17The punches are just being thrown.
00:07:19If they hit or they don't hit,
00:07:20if they throw,
00:07:21they keep the guy preoccupied.
00:07:23Late in the third round,
00:07:25Tyson finally caught up
00:07:26with an elusive matchup.
00:07:29Now Mike opens up,
00:07:30and the right-hand
00:07:31finally dunks him.
00:07:32I remember him getting up.
00:07:33The first punch stung him,
00:07:35but I know the second punch
00:07:36hit him off the top of the head,
00:07:37and he was unable to get up.
00:07:39Perhaps the most interested
00:07:40observer that night
00:07:41was Tyson's next opponent,
00:07:43Frank Bruno.
00:07:45Over the last decade,
00:07:46the hard-hitting Bruno
00:07:47had been a perennial
00:07:48world-class contender.
00:07:50Yet despite his many successes,
00:07:52he lost world title bouts
00:07:54to Lennox Lewis,
00:07:55Tim Witherspoon,
00:07:56and a five-round brawl
00:07:58to Mike Tyson in 1989.
00:08:01And many wondered
00:08:02if he had the chin
00:08:03or the stamina
00:08:04to win the big one.
00:08:06That is,
00:08:07until he faced
00:08:08WBC heavyweight champion
00:08:09Oliver McCall
00:08:10in London's Wembley Stadium.
00:08:12I was a desperate man
00:08:13for the preseason
00:08:14when I was 34,
00:08:15a full-time fighter
00:08:16for the heavyweight championship,
00:08:17and people were writing me
00:08:18off left, right, and center.
00:08:19And in front of 35,000
00:08:21delirious British fans,
00:08:23an inspired Bruno
00:08:25aggressively attacked McCall,
00:08:27using his jab
00:08:28to set up
00:08:28a surprising array
00:08:30of punches.
00:08:32Well, so far,
00:08:34the round
00:08:34belonging to the challenger,
00:08:36Frank Bruno,
00:08:37against the champion,
00:08:38Oliver McCall.
00:08:39Oh, a heavy overhand
00:08:40right by Bruno
00:08:41that blocks McCall.
00:08:43Bruno cannot lose
00:08:44his concentration.
00:08:45Trying to keep that jab up.
00:08:46He can't afford
00:08:47to let McCall get started.
00:08:49As long as he's punching first,
00:08:50he's got this fight.
00:08:52When you're fighting
00:08:53a champion,
00:08:53you've got to beat him
00:08:54and beat him very,
00:08:55very well.
00:08:55Take him, jab him,
00:08:56hold him,
00:08:58turn him around,
00:08:58do anything to beat him.
00:09:00This is a question
00:09:01of consistency
00:09:02on the part
00:09:03of Frank Bruno.
00:09:05He's got to keep that jab.
00:09:06Bruno continues to impress
00:09:08in his quest
00:09:09for his first
00:09:10world championship.
00:09:13As the fight
00:09:14entered the middle rounds,
00:09:15a desperate McCall
00:09:16launched a furious attack
00:09:18on his tiring opponent.
00:09:20Oh, he just got in.
00:09:21A right hook by McCall
00:09:23who is beginning
00:09:24to come on.
00:09:24And that landed cleanly.
00:09:26Of course,
00:09:26there's a difference
00:09:27in the attitude
00:09:28of Oliver McCall.
00:09:29He is now
00:09:30a different fighter.
00:09:31He's now a guy
00:09:32beginning to believe
00:09:34he can hurt
00:09:34and put away Frank Bruno.
00:09:36Entering the final round,
00:09:37McCall could win
00:09:38only by knockout.
00:09:40Yet even Bruno's
00:09:41most ardent fans
00:09:42worried that their
00:09:42exhausted fighter
00:09:43would be unable
00:09:44to survive
00:09:45the final three minutes,
00:09:46once again losing
00:09:47the big one
00:09:48and squandering
00:09:49his last chance
00:09:50at a tight end.
00:09:53Yes, I was fighting
00:09:5412 hard,
00:09:56grueling rounds,
00:09:57but not tight
00:09:58to a point
00:09:59that I had to go
00:09:59to hospital exhaustion.
00:10:01I couldn't stand up
00:10:02and raise my hands
00:10:03or nothing like that.
00:10:04But I was tight.
00:10:07I was crying
00:10:23like a little boy,
00:10:24crying,
00:10:25which I felt embarrassed,
00:10:27crying,
00:10:27but I was crying
00:10:28like a little boy
00:10:28when I was about five,
00:10:30yeah,
00:10:30but very,
00:10:31very emotional
00:10:31because I've been striving,
00:10:34working half
00:10:34after 16 years.
00:10:36I'm not going to give it up
00:10:36that easily.
00:10:37I've been up and down,
00:10:39down in the gutter,
00:10:40treaded on,
00:10:41spatted on,
00:10:42disrespected,
00:10:43been through all that.
00:10:44This time is my time,
00:10:46it's my future,
00:10:47and I can't wait
00:10:48to find my tusk.
00:10:49You are looking into
00:10:54the dressing room
00:10:55of the defending
00:10:57WBC heavyweight champion
00:10:58of the world,
00:10:59Frank Bruno,
00:11:00who got the championship
00:11:01from Oliver McCall
00:11:02last fall.
00:11:04And in a way,
00:11:05he really has the weight
00:11:06of a country
00:11:07on his shoulders.
00:11:08As you can hear
00:11:08in the background,
00:11:09many people hollering
00:11:10for Bruno
00:11:10as some 5,000 fans
00:11:13from Great Britain
00:11:14have flown all the way
00:11:14to Las Vegas
00:11:15to watch Frank Bruno
00:11:16defend his WBC heavyweight
00:11:18championship against
00:11:19Mike Tyson.
00:11:22Well, Tommy,
00:11:23one of the things
00:11:23we want to talk about
00:11:24right now is styles.
00:11:26I'd like you to describe
00:11:26the styles of Bruno
00:11:27and Tyson.
00:11:28Well, Mike Tyson,
00:11:29for example,
00:11:30he's not going to change
00:11:31any.
00:11:31He only does one thing
00:11:32and he does it very well.
00:11:34You know,
00:11:34if something isn't broke,
00:11:35you know,
00:11:35why fix it?
00:11:36Bruno, on the other hand,
00:11:38he's learned to work
00:11:39well off his jab
00:11:40and I think that he's
00:11:41put on some extra weight
00:11:41and he feels that's going
00:11:42to be a factor in this fight.
00:11:43Okay, let's try and get
00:11:44into the heads
00:11:45of these fighters right now
00:11:45and talk strategy.
00:11:46What does Bruno
00:11:47have to do
00:11:48in order to hold
00:11:49on to the championship?
00:11:50He has to use his jab
00:11:51from the outside,
00:11:52make Tyson fight
00:11:53from the outside
00:11:53and he doesn't go,
00:11:55you know,
00:11:55doesn't accept power
00:11:56punch as well
00:11:57so when he gets hit,
00:11:58he can't freeze,
00:11:58he's got to continue
00:11:59to move
00:11:59and stay off the ropes
00:12:00because Tyson's
00:12:01a great finisher.
00:12:02Now, what does Tyson
00:12:02have to do in order
00:12:03to regain that championship?
00:12:04Tyson has to slip left
00:12:05on the outside,
00:12:06weave on the inside.
00:12:07He's most devastating
00:12:08when he's on the inside
00:12:09and I think that's
00:12:09what we'll see tonight.
00:12:10And your prediction?
00:12:12I think after four,
00:12:13Tyson.
00:12:13Before that,
00:12:13I think Bruno has a shot.
00:12:14I know you're ready for it
00:12:15and here we go.
00:12:16It is really going to be
00:12:17something else,
00:12:18that is for sure.
00:12:19Now, the outcome
00:12:19of this particular foul
00:12:20will most likely end
00:12:21in a knockout
00:12:22in the opinion
00:12:23of many experts
00:12:24and here is why.
00:12:25Among current
00:12:26and former heavyweight champions,
00:12:28Bruno and Tyson
00:12:28rank number three
00:12:29and four respectively
00:12:30in career knockout percentage.
00:12:32This statistic
00:12:33almost guarantees
00:12:34there will be
00:12:35explosives in the ring.
00:12:37Well, my friends,
00:12:38it's time for the
00:12:38detonations to begin.
00:12:40The WBC Heavyweight Championship
00:12:42is next.
00:12:43Back to ringside.
00:12:44Once again, Steve Albert.
00:12:45Steve.
00:12:46Thank you, Jim.
00:12:47It's hard to tell
00:12:48if we're in America
00:12:49or England
00:12:50as we get ready
00:12:50for Frank Bruno
00:12:51versus Mike Tyson
00:12:52for the WBC Heavyweight Championship.
00:12:55Bruno and Tyson
00:12:55meeting for the second time
00:12:56in just over seven years
00:12:58with the former world champion
00:12:59looking to make it two for two.
00:13:00Only this time
00:13:01a completely different
00:13:02set of circumstances.
00:13:03In the topsy-turvy,
00:13:04unpredictable world of boxing,
00:13:06it's now Tyson,
00:13:07the challenger,
00:13:08looking to recapture
00:13:08the title from the man
00:13:09he defeated in February of 89.
00:13:11Frank Bruno,
00:13:12now the champion.
00:13:13Who would have thought
00:13:14they'd be meeting again
00:13:15with Bruno defending
00:13:16the title?
00:13:19Both fighters,
00:13:20as you'd expect,
00:13:20talking big games,
00:13:21both extremely confident.
00:13:23The bravado flying,
00:13:24but all of the hype aside,
00:13:25what should we expect
00:13:26once the bell sounds?
00:13:28Will Bruno take it
00:13:29to Tyson,
00:13:29look to bully him,
00:13:30tie him up,
00:13:31hold and hit
00:13:32as McDillian Mathis
00:13:33tried to do?
00:13:34Or will Bruno,
00:13:35certainly more skilled
00:13:36than Tyson's last two opponents,
00:13:38try to keep his distance,
00:13:39working the jab
00:13:40to set up his formidable right.
00:13:42Power, strength,
00:13:42and determination
00:13:43have never been
00:13:43Bruno drawbacks.
00:13:45Stamina, stiffness,
00:13:46and a weak chin are.
00:13:47Let's also remember
00:13:48he barely beat
00:13:49an uninspired Oliver McCall.
00:13:51Tyson looks to be
00:13:51in great shape,
00:13:52may still be rusty,
00:13:53overanxious,
00:13:54and wild with his punches,
00:13:55but all it takes
00:13:56is one bomb,
00:13:57which is usually
00:13:57what separates Mike Tyson
00:13:59from the rest
00:14:00of the division.
00:14:01As we bring back
00:14:01the fight,
00:14:02Dr. Ferdy,
00:14:02how would you evaluate
00:14:03the fighters' recent
00:14:04performances?
00:14:05Well, Tyson,
00:14:06you can throw both of them out,
00:14:07it meant nothing.
00:14:07On the other hand,
00:14:08Bruno has very
00:14:09significant changes.
00:14:11He's learned to jab,
00:14:12he's learned to pace himself,
00:14:13he's learned to smother
00:14:14a smaller man
00:14:15as he comes in,
00:14:16put his weight on him,
00:14:17and make him tired.
00:14:18All of those things
00:14:19are big pluses
00:14:20which give him confidence.
00:14:21The last fight
00:14:22showed me a lot
00:14:23of Frank Bruno.
00:14:24Unfortunately,
00:14:25nothing you can do
00:14:26will strengthen your chin.
00:14:27That's his drawback.
00:14:28And how about a prediction?
00:14:29I think Tyson would be
00:14:31too much for him
00:14:32from five to eight rounds,
00:14:35should be over with.
00:14:36It's just too much ferocity
00:14:38and not enough strength
00:14:40of jaw of Bruno.
00:14:41I don't know if these fans
00:14:42behind us would agree.
00:14:43Bruno has never won
00:14:44a big fight like this one
00:14:45while it's Tyson's
00:14:46first championship fight
00:14:47in over six years.
00:14:48Bobby, behind all
00:14:49of the bluster,
00:14:50are they masking any doubts?
00:14:51I know Mike Tyson's
00:14:52entire career,
00:14:53I know Mike personally
00:14:54for over ten years now,
00:14:54Steve,
00:14:55there's no doubt
00:14:55in his system.
00:14:56He's just not made that way,
00:14:57it's not part of his character
00:14:58or his belief patterns.
00:15:00He doesn't believe
00:15:00any heavyweight in the world
00:15:01can beat him,
00:15:02he's always believed that
00:15:02and I believe he always will.
00:15:03And there's no masking
00:15:04of any doubt on his behalf.
00:15:06Now, as far as
00:15:07Frank Bruno's concerned,
00:15:08he's either got a great career
00:15:09as an actor
00:15:09or he has no doubt himself
00:15:10because I've seen his interviews,
00:15:12he's very convincing.
00:15:13And sometimes becoming
00:15:14world champion, Steve,
00:15:15makes you think better
00:15:16and fight better.
00:15:17So I think we have
00:15:18two fighters here
00:15:18who believe in themselves
00:15:19and there's no doubt.
00:15:20And just for the record,
00:15:21a prediction?
00:15:23My prediction basically
00:15:24has been that Mike Tyson
00:15:25will knock out Frank Bruno
00:15:26somewhere between five and ten,
00:15:27but if Frank gets careless early
00:15:29because of those absolutes
00:15:30we talked about earlier,
00:15:31the bad chin and the big power
00:15:32could be earlier than that.
00:15:33But I think five to ten,
00:15:35it's Mike Tyson champ once again.
00:15:36All right, Bobby,
00:15:37part of the gamesmanship of boxing
00:15:38is the traditional ring walk
00:15:40and that is certainly magnified
00:15:41in a big heavyweight championship fight.
00:15:43The ring walks of Bruno and Tyson
00:15:45are about as different
00:15:45as their personalities in the ring.
00:15:48Let's take a look.
00:15:48Tyson always makes his entrances
00:15:50in steely-eyed,
00:15:51no-nonsense fashion.
00:15:52Even his attire
00:15:53or lack of is intimidating.
00:15:54In stark contrast,
00:15:56Bruno takes the theatrical approach.
00:15:58Laser beams, loud music,
00:15:59his walks are often lengthy,
00:16:01full of fanfare.
00:16:02While Tyson couldn't care less
00:16:03what people think,
00:16:04Bruno wants us to say,
00:16:06now that's an entrance.
00:16:07Tonight, the theatrics of Bruno
00:16:08will be missing,
00:16:10but he'll still have some 5,000 fans
00:16:12from Great Britain
00:16:13cheering him on.
00:16:15And there they are
00:16:16with the Union Jack flag.
00:16:18The fans of Great Britain
00:16:20who have journeyed
00:16:20all the way overseas
00:16:22to Las Vegas
00:16:23to support their man,
00:16:26the People's Champion of England,
00:16:28Frank Bruno.
00:16:29Let's go over to Jim Gray.
00:16:33All right, thank you, Steve.
00:16:34Well, it is very quiet
00:16:35in the hallway
00:16:35as both camps prepare
00:16:36to walk out to the ring.
00:16:38Frank Bruno's people tell us
00:16:39he's been very still,
00:16:40very quiet.
00:16:41He's been listening to
00:16:42and watching the fights
00:16:43and listening to some music.
00:16:44Seems to be a lot more tension
00:16:45down on that end.
00:16:46Over here behind us,
00:16:47Team Tyson as they get to come out.
00:16:49Mike Tyson has been pacing.
00:16:50That's normal for him.
00:16:51Been walking around the locker room.
00:16:53Not saying much to anybody,
00:16:54but the feeling in here
00:16:55is that Mike Tyson
00:16:56is more than ready
00:16:57and he's been very confident
00:16:59so far since his arrival.
00:17:00Let's go back out
00:17:01to Steve Albert.
00:17:04All right, thank you very much, Jim.
00:17:14Let's go back out
00:17:15to Steve Albert.
00:17:18All right, thank you very much, Jim.
00:17:20You will see a rare sight
00:17:27as the challenger number one rated
00:17:31Mike Tyson
00:17:32will walk into the ring first
00:17:34for the first time
00:17:36since November 22nd, 1986
00:17:38when he fought Trevor Burbick
00:17:40for this title.
00:17:41Tonight, he takes the first step
00:17:43towards unification again.
00:17:44Again.
00:17:45Please believe that I'll never be shamed again
00:17:48Again I'll be the next heavyweight champion
00:17:50Call me crazy
00:17:51But no one can fade me
00:17:53I'm the product of the project
00:17:54Lost and crazy
00:17:55Gun your hands up
00:17:56Mr. Bruno
00:17:57Rive
00:17:58Big white tights
00:17:59About to brutalize that ass tonight
00:18:00No hesitation
00:18:01From the whole nation
00:18:02I think that ass so bad
00:18:04I'm probably violating my bases
00:18:05Through demonstration
00:18:06That I'll strategize information
00:18:07Intensive kills on the screen
00:18:09Good fact
00:18:11Yeah

00:18:35Oh
00:18:36Oh
00:18:38mike tyson making the long walk to the ring but the american fans and the fans of tyson in general
00:18:56being drowned up as mike tyson will make his way into the arena here he will hear the reaction
00:19:02from the british fans some 5 000 strong in support of frank brodo

00:20:25And now we await the arrival of the champion, Frank Bruno.
00:20:32In favor of the winner and new champion, Frank Bruno.
00:20:52And here is the champion, Frank Bruno of England, making his first defense of the WBC heavyweight
00:21:10title, heading into the ring for the first time as champion and without as much fanfare
00:21:17as he is accustomed to in England.
00:21:49The charismatic and dearing Frank Bruno, used to being the underdog.
00:22:02He's the underdog again, even though he's the champion.
00:22:04The British fans going for serve.
00:22:34All right, let's run down the figures as we check out the tail of the tape.
00:22:49At 34, Bruno is five years older than Tyson.
00:22:53After that, it's all Bruno on paper.
00:22:55A three and a half inch height advantage for Bruno.
00:22:57The big disparity in weight, Bruno 247, Tyson 220, 27 pounds heavier for Bruno.
00:23:04And the big 11-inch reach advantage for Frank Bruno.
00:23:07And of the WBC rules for this heavyweight championship fight.
00:23:11Ten-point must system.
00:23:12Three judges scoring the fight.
00:23:14No standing eight count.
00:23:15No three knockdown rule.
00:23:16Only the referee can stop the fight.
00:23:18A fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the last round.
00:23:21If an accidental foul occurs before the start of round five, it's ruled a no decision.
00:23:25After the start of round five, they go to the cards.

00:32:35Any questions,
00:32:36Mr. Tyson?
00:32:37Mr. Bruno?
00:32:38Let's get it on!
00:32:39Let's get it on!
00:32:45Well,
00:32:45Bruno may not be getting the money he thinks he should be getting,
00:32:48nor the respect,
00:32:49but he is getting the corner that he wants.
00:32:51They changed corners so he could be near his fans.
00:32:56And the first thing you notice,
00:32:58the size difference between Tyson and Bruno.
00:33:03Frank Bruno with the bodybuilder's physique,
00:33:0627 pounds heavier,
00:33:07almost four inches taller,
00:33:09huge reach advantage,
00:33:10and here we go,
00:33:11round one.
00:33:12I'll tell you what,
00:33:13if I was built like Frank Bruno,
00:33:14I wouldn't be afraid of anybody or anything,
00:33:16but Mike Tyson is a phenom.
00:33:18Abnormal strength,
00:33:19unnatural.
00:33:19He is a walking powerhouse.
00:33:21Tyson's trainer,
00:33:22Jay Bright,
00:33:22said he's concerned about keeping Tyson under control of the belt.
00:33:25He'll be very anxious.
00:33:28Tyson down,
00:33:29ducked every one of those punches.
00:33:32They all went over his head.
00:33:33A lot of problems as to whether Tyson's going to go on Bobby and weaving.
00:33:37He's certainly coming straight in.
00:33:40Tyson said they don't want him standing straight in front of Bruno,
00:33:43Bobby.
00:33:44Bruno,
00:33:44a big cruncher,
00:33:45also has a good jab.
00:33:46What you're going to see is Frank Bruno grab Mike when he comes in like that.
00:33:49Every time,
00:33:50every time he comes in,
00:33:51he's going to hold him.
00:33:52He's not going to let Mike do what Mike wants to do on the inside.
00:33:55A straight right hand there by Mike Tyson.
00:33:58Nice right hand by Tyson.
00:33:59And some explanation from Mills Lane to keep their heads off.
00:34:05Bruno with the questionable chin.
00:34:07Get off that neck.
00:34:08Come on.
00:34:09Get off that neck.
00:34:09He said he'll try to use the jab to keep Tyson away.
00:34:13He does not like to fight on the inside generally.
00:34:16But Bruno also feels he's learned to hold on,
00:34:19which he did with McCall.
00:34:20He is very strong,
00:34:21and he'll also try to tie Tyson up.
00:34:23Something that's going to give Frank Bruno a problem.
00:34:25When he jabs,
00:34:25his mind is thinking backwards a little.
00:34:28He's going to throw that right hand.
00:34:29He's got his jab into Mike
00:34:30and throw the right hand into Mike.
00:34:32See how he leans back?
00:34:33He can't do that.
00:34:34He can't do that if he's going to be effective.
00:34:35He's fighting scared.
00:34:37When you jab and already are going back
00:34:39before the jab even gets there,
00:34:41you're too apprehensive.
00:34:43On Mike's side,
00:34:44he's not bobbing and weaving like he has,
00:34:47and he's coming in pretty straight up
00:34:48and flying through the air,
00:34:50which if you get hit midway there,
00:34:52that could be big.
00:34:53Bruno continues to hold and hit.
00:34:55Quit grabbing.
00:34:55Come on.
00:34:56Quit grabbing,
00:34:56says Mills Lane.
00:34:58Tyson's people out on the bottom.
00:34:59Robin Wolfe.
00:34:59He less of a target attack from the angle,
00:35:01and he is on the attack.
00:35:03That right hand buckled the legs of Frank Bruno.
00:35:07That's the first one he felt the steam.
00:35:11Well, if they were worried about Tyson's ferocity,
00:35:14they can stop worrying.
00:35:15He is fierce tonight.
00:35:18Tyson's camp feeling the key is hand and foot speed.
00:35:21Tyson is just too fast and quick on his feet,
00:35:23and that Bruno doesn't have the foot speed to compete.
00:35:27Bruno trying a nice uppercut,
00:35:28which is a nice idea,
00:35:30but it got smothered.
00:35:30It didn't get there anywhere.
00:35:38Bruno for a nice right hand
00:35:39around the side of Tyson's ear,
00:35:41and then a left hook to the body.
00:35:43Didn't seem to do anything,
00:35:44but it was a nice effort.
00:35:45And any time...
00:35:45Oh, here comes Tyson.
00:35:47Tyson with a combination
00:35:48with 20 seconds left in round one.
00:35:51He got Bruno's attention,
00:35:52wobbled Bruno with that punch,
00:35:53and this is what I mean.
00:35:54If he makes a mistake early,
00:35:55you can't fix a chin
00:35:56that was never great to begin with.
00:35:58A left hook by Tyson,
00:35:59but Bruno comes forward
00:36:01seven seconds to go in the round.
00:36:03Bruno in bad trouble there.
00:36:05All he needed was one more good shot.
00:36:07He'd have been gone.
00:36:07Yeah, you got no water.
00:36:31Give us a fucking chow.
00:36:33Give us a chow.
00:36:34Give us a chow.
00:36:36Give us a chow, Kevin.
00:36:36Give us a chow, Kevin.
00:36:45Leave us alone, Willie.
00:36:47Come on, man.
00:36:47He's doing it.
00:36:48That's why I'm here.
00:36:50Okay, man.
00:36:50Be first up.
00:36:52Y'all don't even get ahead of you, man.
00:36:55Be first.
00:36:56Go on, Miller.
00:36:58Go on.
00:36:58Go on.
00:37:00There you see where Tyson wobbles him
00:37:02with a big right hand,
00:37:03right on the button.
00:37:05Now, you wonder if that was a cut
00:37:06or one of those charges in
00:37:07because there was a lot of holding,
00:37:09possible hits, banging, clanging.
00:37:11The cut's nasty.
00:37:12Well, it was a nasty cut.
00:37:13And rest assured,
00:37:16Tyson's not going to let that alone.
00:37:17A deep gash
00:37:18over the left eye
00:37:20of Frank Bruno.
00:37:22A nasty cut
00:37:23as Tyson looks to rub the glove in there.
00:37:26And, well, no, both of them are saying,
00:37:28Tyson was saying,
00:37:30he's grabbing me.
00:37:31He's doing all these things.
00:37:32Tell him to stop.
00:37:33Yep.
00:37:33Bill Slane trying to take control.
00:37:35And Tyson just loading up,
00:37:37looking to throw the ball.
00:37:38How do you go, Frank?
00:37:39Frank, looking to hold on
00:37:41in every instance.
00:37:42Anytime he gets close to...
00:37:43Anytime he gets close to Tyson,
00:37:46he holds on.
00:37:47He's looking to hold
00:37:47and tire him out.
00:37:49He's not going to do it like that
00:37:50because he can't
00:37:51put any efforts toward punching
00:37:53if he's just worried about holding.
00:37:55He looks like a guy
00:37:56just waiting for an avalanche
00:37:57to fall on him.
00:37:59And fall on him,
00:38:01it will because
00:38:02Tyson is fierce tonight.
00:38:05Tyson now showing
00:38:06some head movement.
00:38:08Let him go, Frank.
00:38:08Come on.
00:38:09Frank's got to take his shot.
00:38:10Steve, put himself in a position
00:38:11to win.
00:38:12Take his shot.
00:38:12If he gets knocked out
00:38:13and he puts himself
00:38:14in a position to win,
00:38:15there's nothing
00:38:15that's dishonorable about it.
00:38:17But to just hold
00:38:18and do that
00:38:18for 12 rounds,
00:38:19there's no wandering.
00:38:20Well, he's not going to be here
00:38:21for 12 rounds,
00:38:22I guarantee you.
00:38:23Oh, a left hook
00:38:24by Mike Tyson
00:38:26flush on the face
00:38:27of Frank Bruno.
00:38:28Another left
00:38:28and a combination
00:38:29by Tyson
00:38:30and Bruno holds on.
00:38:32Steve, Bruno took
00:38:33that left hand
00:38:33better than he took
00:38:34the first one.
00:38:35He seemed to adjust
00:38:36a little bit.
00:38:36He caught two shots there
00:38:37and did not react
00:38:38as badly as he did
00:38:39in the first round.
00:38:40Maybe the nerves
00:38:41and the jitters
00:38:41he may be settling in.
00:38:43The cutover,
00:38:44Bruno's eye holding up.
00:38:45No problem there.
00:38:47The big problem
00:38:48is standing in front of him.
00:38:49Halfway through
00:38:51with a second.
00:38:54He has no offensive desire
00:38:56whatsoever, Bruno,
00:38:58and if he doesn't,
00:38:59he can't hold off Tyson.
00:39:00Again,
00:39:02a little tiny referee
00:39:04and two huge guys.
00:39:06Tyson looking to go back
00:39:08to work,
00:39:08immediately tied up,
00:39:09wrapped up by Bruno.
00:39:10But Mills Lee is a heavyweight
00:39:12referee in standing.
00:39:13Time, time, time.
00:39:16He's taking a point
00:39:17away from Bruno
00:39:18for the continuous holding.
00:39:21As if it makes any difference.
00:39:23That is what you call
00:39:24like an enemy.
00:39:26Less than a minute
00:39:26remaining in round two.
00:39:27And Bruno continues
00:39:30to employ
00:39:32the holding tactics.
00:39:35Bruno switches
00:39:36just for a moment,
00:39:38switching to lefty.
00:39:39It won't help.
00:39:40He'll get hammered
00:39:41even harder.
00:39:43Even Tyson's jabs
00:39:44seem to lift Bruno
00:39:45off his feet.
00:39:47And that's saying something
00:39:48for a 247-pounder.
00:39:50It was a nice right uppercut
00:39:51by Bruno,
00:39:52reacting a little too much
00:39:54because obviously
00:39:54the Brits want to see
00:39:55their boy do something.
00:39:56He has nothing in it.
00:39:57He has nothing
00:39:58on that uppercut.
00:40:00He's not fighting
00:40:01offensively.
00:40:03Right uppercut there
00:40:04by Bruno,
00:40:05but doing no damage.
00:40:07That eye's getting
00:40:07very, very ugly right now.
00:40:09It's dripping freely.
00:40:10Yeah, all of a sudden
00:40:11it started to bleed
00:40:13down the side of his face.
00:40:16A home run.
00:40:17A home run thrown
00:40:18by Tyson.
00:40:19They just missed.
00:40:22Tyson is throwing
00:40:24evil-intention punches.
00:40:25He wants to finish
00:40:26this off.
00:40:27There's the bell.
00:40:38You're getting
00:40:40fucking slower and slower.
00:40:42Now listen to me,
00:40:42Frank.
00:40:43This is all you
00:40:44fucking wanted.
00:40:45Throw the uppercut
00:40:46with some fucking
00:40:46venom and win you
00:40:47it's in harm.
00:40:48Don't tie me around
00:40:50and the eye's okay.
00:40:51There's no wrong
00:40:52with the eye.
00:40:52You're kidding.
00:40:53Just do your work.
00:40:56Okay, right now,
00:40:56Frank, Frank,
00:40:57concentrate on what we're doing.
00:40:58That's not my job, mate.
00:40:59Now come on,
00:41:00you know you can win the fight.
00:41:02We'll fucking win it, right?
00:41:03Okay, don't wait for him.
00:41:05Let's take a look
00:41:05at where he got hurt
00:41:06in the first round.
00:41:07That right hand,
00:41:08that could have been
00:41:09a cut right there.
00:41:10See the heads go together?
00:41:11That could have been
00:41:11the cut right there.
00:41:12But Bruno was in bad shape
00:41:14at that time.
00:41:15He buckled.
00:41:15In the last round,
00:41:19you see Mike
00:41:19rocking counter
00:41:20with a nice right hand
00:41:21and here comes the hook.
00:41:23Didn't land clean,
00:41:24but there's more
00:41:24behind that.
00:41:25Mike threw a nice
00:41:26counter right hand.
00:41:27And George Francis
00:41:28very colorfully
00:41:29echoing your words,
00:41:31Bobby.
00:41:31Throw the uppercut.
00:41:32But he said throw
00:41:33with venom.
00:41:34He meant put himself
00:41:34in position to win.
00:41:35Throw it like you mean it
00:41:36and let's get on with it.
00:41:38And he didn't use
00:41:39those exact words.
00:41:40Now we just want to fight
00:41:41for holding.
00:41:42Fight it out, okay?
00:41:43Now come on, let's go.
00:41:44And more lecturing
00:41:45from Mills Lane
00:41:46saying fight it out,
00:41:47stop holding.
00:41:49You know, people kept wondering
00:41:49which Mike Tyson's
00:41:50going to be here,
00:41:51which Mike Tyson isn't.
00:41:52Free, prison,
00:41:53better, worse,
00:41:54in between.
00:41:55This is the similar
00:41:56Mike Tyson,
00:41:57maybe just a little
00:41:58more patient,
00:41:59a pinch heavier,
00:41:59but I think he's
00:42:00a little more patient
00:42:01and a little more disciplined.
00:42:03He's got a difficult
00:42:04task in front of him
00:42:05and a lot of people
00:42:05are going to say
00:42:06this fight doesn't
00:42:06prove anything anyway.
00:42:07And this is what
00:42:08Bruno expected.
00:42:09He said he's not looking
00:42:09for the Tyson
00:42:10who fought MacKillian Mathis.
00:42:11Here's a combination
00:42:12uppercut by Tyson.
00:42:14Tyson laid it on,
00:42:15pouring it on,
00:42:16down goes Bruno
00:42:17into the ropes.
00:42:21And it is all over.
00:42:24It is all over here
00:42:25in round three.
00:42:26Mike Tyson
00:42:27is champion again.
00:42:30And that is it.
00:42:31Mike Tyson is back.
00:42:33Tyson era has begun.
00:42:38I told you Frank
00:42:39Bruno had no chance
00:42:40because those absolute
00:42:41Mike hits with both hands.
00:42:43He's got a good chin.
00:42:44You're not getting
00:42:45him out of there one shot.
00:42:46Bruno never throws
00:42:47more than one heart punch
00:42:48at a time.
00:42:48And Bruno's chin
00:42:49is very suspect.
00:42:50On top of him,
00:42:51always tiring.
00:42:52Well,
00:42:52there can certainly
00:42:53be no doubt
00:42:54that he's back.
00:42:55He's back with all
00:42:55the old ferocity,
00:42:56all the old technique.
00:42:58He took care of business.
00:42:59There's no doubt
00:43:00that Mike Tyson
00:43:01is back as a force
00:43:03of nature
00:43:04in the heavyweight.
00:43:05And Mike Tyson
00:43:06over to console
00:43:07Frank Bruno.
00:43:10I'd love to find out
00:43:11eventually what he's
00:43:12saying to him.
00:43:14Mike Tyson,
00:43:15his third comeback fight,
00:43:17recaptures the WBC
00:43:18Heavyweight Championship,
00:43:20dethroning Frank Bruno,
00:43:22who held the title
00:43:23for about six and a half months.
00:43:24Tonight in his first
00:43:33title fight,
00:43:34since losing the
00:43:35undisputed world
00:43:36heavyweight title
00:43:36to James Buster Douglas,
00:43:38February of 1990.
00:43:40Mike Tyson again,
00:43:41heavyweight check.
00:43:41Well,
00:43:42let's take a look
00:43:42at how Tyson
00:43:43took care of business.
00:43:44Duck Thunder.
00:43:45A shot under the arm,
00:43:46in the legs,
00:43:47and from here on out,
00:43:48a rain of punches,
00:43:50which buckled
00:43:51Frank Bruno
00:43:54until he was helpless.
00:43:55If you let Mike Tyson
00:43:56get that kind of leverage
00:43:57with that right uppercut,
00:43:58you will not make it
00:43:59through the round,
00:44:00never mind the fight.
00:44:01He is a finisher
00:44:02par excellence.
00:44:04And he finished tonight,
00:44:06and Frank Bruno
00:44:06had no chance.
00:44:08A ferocious display
00:44:10by Mike Tyson.
00:44:12Take another look at it.
00:44:13Mike lands a body shot
00:44:14there,
00:44:14and then the hook.
00:44:15And then what he does best,
00:44:16he comes up,
00:44:16another hook in right hand.
00:44:18You'll see him rip
00:44:18the uppercut.
00:44:19There's one.
00:44:20He rips another one
00:44:21that doesn't do much.
00:44:22It misses.
00:44:23That one hurt.
00:44:23You will see the knees
00:44:24buckle if he had a bigger
00:44:25angle.
00:44:26Bruno is out,
00:44:27and now it's just a matter
00:44:28of pummeling and finishing
00:44:29the job.
00:44:29Le Coup de Gras done.
00:44:33Well, it's been over six years
00:44:35since Tyson could be called
00:44:36a world champion
00:44:37as we take further looks.
00:44:42Interestingly,
00:44:43Buster Mathis Jr.
00:44:44ended up staying in the ring
00:44:45longer with Mike Tyson.
00:44:48And there's the right
00:44:49uppercut,
00:44:50and the onslaught
00:44:51will continue
00:44:52before Bruno buckles.
00:44:54Part of the problem
00:44:55with Frank Bruno's
00:44:56strategy there was
00:44:57when he came in,
00:44:58he came in with
00:44:58one punch possible,
00:45:00not totally,
00:45:01you know,
00:45:02committed to that punch
00:45:03to hurt Tyson,
00:45:04to land it,
00:45:04but to hold,
00:45:05to put his arms
00:45:06in a position
00:45:06to grab Mike
00:45:07and tie him up,
00:45:08a la Bonecrusher Smith.
00:45:09And I will maintain,
00:45:10and I mean no offense
00:45:11to any fighter,
00:45:12it is more honorable
00:45:13to get knocked out
00:45:13in one, two,
00:45:14or three rounds
00:45:14fighting hard
00:45:15and putting yourself
00:45:16in a position to win
00:45:17than to hold on,
00:45:18grapple,
00:45:19and wrestle,
00:45:19and dance
00:45:20for 10 or 12 rounds
00:45:21and say,
00:45:21oh jeez,
00:45:21I went to distance.

00:46:00with a combination
00:46:00of right uppercuts
00:46:01and left hooks.
00:46:03Explosive shots.
00:46:04Those are signature punches,
00:46:05Steve.
00:46:06He throws a beautiful
00:46:07right uppercut
00:46:07and a tremendous left hook.
00:46:09We're ready for the fight,
00:46:10Dr. Bernie Pacheco
00:46:12with Mike Tyson.
00:46:12That was a heck of a finish,
00:46:17but are you back?
00:46:19Well, I still always
00:46:20have room for more improvement,
00:46:22and I'm my own worth critic.

00:46:38you said I could have
00:46:38done some more.
00:46:39Were you having
00:46:40that much fun?
00:46:41Let's take a look
00:46:42of the monitor.
00:46:43This is a finish,
00:46:44Mike.
00:46:45It's super slow.
00:46:46You talk.
00:46:47As you see,
00:46:48I'm just throwing punches
00:46:49because he's holding a lot,
00:46:50so I'm just throwing
00:46:50for you to the win.
00:46:52My objective is to throw
00:46:53at all times,
00:46:53just to throw punches,
00:46:54throw punches,
00:46:55bring him down
00:46:55with a Henry Armstrong effect,
00:46:56so to speak.
00:46:57Boom,
00:46:57that hurt him.
00:46:58He's out right now.
00:46:59And I'm trying to catch him again.
00:47:01Don't stop.
00:47:01I missed him.
00:47:02Don't stop.
00:47:02And he don't know.
00:47:03Keep coming.
00:47:04Boom.
00:47:05There you go.
00:47:05And there's another one.
00:47:07The best ever.
00:47:08The best ever.
00:47:10The best ever.
00:47:12The best ever.
00:47:12The best ever.
00:47:12Well,
00:47:15Champ,
00:47:16that's what they call
00:47:17finishing in boxing.
00:47:18You are one of the
00:47:19great finishers in boxing.
00:47:21Well,
00:47:21I'm doing well.
00:47:23I'm constantly improving.
00:47:24I like to say one thing
00:47:25to all my people in IYC,
00:47:29everyone,
00:47:30the Islamic service,
00:47:32vice lords,
00:47:33folks,
00:47:34regiments,
00:47:35all the people
00:47:35that was good to me,
00:47:36Mr. Slavin,
00:47:38Mr. Finster,
00:47:39God praise be to everybody.
00:47:40All whack off.
00:47:41Champ,
00:47:41one last question.
00:47:43Bruce Seldon,
00:47:43is he next?
00:47:44Whoever's next.
00:47:45Bruce,
00:47:46you want Bruce or anybody?
00:47:47I'll fight anybody
00:47:48Don't keep in front of me.
00:47:50And I guess I still have more to do
00:47:52and have more improvement to do.
00:47:53I wouldn't do my best.
00:47:54Well, Champ,
00:47:55from one guy to the other,
00:47:56welcome back.
00:47:57Thank you, sir.
00:47:58All right,
00:47:58let's go with Gray.
00:47:59Let's go to Jim Gray.
00:48:00All right,
00:48:01thank you very much, Ferdy.
00:48:02Frank,
00:48:03first of all,
00:48:03are you all right?
00:48:04Yeah, I'm fine, Jim.
00:48:05Fine,
00:48:05a little bit of broken hearted,
00:48:06but I'm fine.
00:48:07A lot of my English fans
00:48:08came over here to support me,
00:48:09but that's how it goes.
00:48:11What was your game plan?
00:48:12It seemed as though
00:48:13you were content to hold on
00:48:14and not really have
00:48:15any offensive plan.
00:48:16I was trying to sort of
00:48:17like slide him down,
00:48:18use my weight against him,
00:48:20but he was a fast guy.
00:48:21Very fast guy.
00:48:22Couldn't take nothing
00:48:22away from him.
00:48:23Was he better now
00:48:24than when you fought him
00:48:25seven years ago?
00:48:25I wouldn't go so far,
00:48:26say he's about the same.
00:48:28The cut over your eye,
00:48:29did it affect your performance?
00:48:30A little bit.
00:48:31It worried me,
00:48:31yeah,
00:48:32first round.
00:48:33What are your plans now,
00:48:34Frank?
00:48:34I'm not too sure.
00:48:35I've got to have 24 hours
00:48:36or 48 hours to sit down
00:48:38with my family,
00:48:38my wife,
00:48:39my beautiful kids,
00:48:40and suss it out.
00:48:41You've been described
00:48:41as a guy who's like a toothache.
00:48:43You just keep coming back
00:48:44and coming back.
00:48:45Will you come back from this
00:48:46or are you satisfied now
00:48:48that you won your championship
00:48:49after so many tries?
00:48:50I've got to wait and see.
00:48:51I couldn't want to make
00:48:51no commitments,
00:48:52you know?
00:48:53I would go home
00:48:53and sit down with my family
00:48:54and take it from there.
00:48:55I'm just disappointed
00:48:56that the English fans
00:48:57that came over here
00:48:57and the American fans
00:48:58would want me to do a good job,
00:48:59but I'll try my best.
00:49:01Frank,
00:49:01your assessment of Mike Tyson,
00:49:03how did you feel he did tonight?
00:49:04He'd done pretty well,
00:49:05you know,
00:49:05he beat me,
00:49:05so he must have done good,
00:49:07you know?
00:49:07Better than you thought?
00:49:08A little bit more
00:49:10better than I thought.
00:49:11It's a rough game out there.
00:49:13Frank, congratulations.
00:49:14You've been a good champion.
00:49:18Let's go back to Steve Albert.
00:49:19Thanks, Jim.
00:49:20Always charming
00:49:21and accommodating
00:49:23Frank Bruno,
00:49:24now the former
00:49:25WBC heavyweight champion,
00:49:27so the question now,
00:49:29has Tyson finally silenced
00:49:31his critics?
00:49:32There's no question
00:49:35that he showed desire
00:49:37here tonight.
00:49:39Mike Tyson
00:49:39going back towards
00:49:42the dressing room
00:49:43wearing the belt
00:49:44and hearing it
00:49:47from the fans
00:49:48as he blows kisses
00:49:50to his many admirers.
00:49:53Mike Tyson,
00:49:55a champion once again,
00:49:57makes it two for two
00:49:58over Frank Bruno
00:49:58and ups his record
00:49:59to 44 and one
00:50:00while Bruno falls
00:50:02to 40 and five.
00:50:05So it's hugs
00:50:06all around
00:50:06for
00:50:07the champion,
00:50:10Mike Tyson.
00:50:11All right,
00:50:11we're going to show you
00:50:12here on the Telestrator.
00:50:13We're going to show you
00:50:13where Mike Tyson is
00:50:14when he works his way
00:50:15to the inside,
00:50:15why he's so effective
00:50:16in his key punches, okay?
00:50:18Right here,
00:50:18you'll see the right hand
00:50:19that he's leaned
00:50:20to the body
00:50:21on Bruno.
00:50:23But what he does,
00:50:24Bruno tries to put
00:50:25both his arms around
00:50:25Mike, grab him
00:50:26and bring him in.
00:50:27What Mike does
00:50:27is rip uppercuts
00:50:28up in here.
00:50:29These are his trademark
00:50:30punches and left hooks
00:50:31around.
00:50:31Come around the hands
00:50:32and come up
00:50:33through the hands
00:50:33and you'll watch it
00:50:34as we go.
00:50:35Roll the tape.
00:50:36He comes up underneath.
00:50:38There's the hook
00:50:39and he's going to come up
00:50:40with the uppercuts.
00:50:40He's going to work
00:50:41his way in.
00:50:42He steps around
00:50:43with another hook.
00:50:44Just throwing those hooks
00:50:45and the uppercuts.
00:50:46That uppercut,
00:50:46you see the feet
00:50:47come out from under.
00:50:48That uppercut
00:50:49is such a vicious punch
00:50:50I can't begin to tell you
00:50:51and he gets such a leverage
00:50:52lifting his opponents
00:50:53off the floor.
00:50:54The uppercut hurt him
00:50:55more than anything else
00:50:56and was the key
00:50:56to the stoppage.
00:50:57Stoppage in the third round
00:51:01for Mike Tyson
00:51:02who is a champion again
00:51:04and Ferdy Pacheco
00:51:06the fight doctor
00:51:06is standing by
00:51:07once again in the ring.
00:51:09We got two days there.
00:51:12Don,
00:51:12big night for you.
00:51:13You got blood on your jacket
00:51:14and is the return of Tyson.
00:51:16Hey listen,
00:51:16it doesn't matter
00:51:17about the blood on my jacket.
00:51:19All I want to do
00:51:19is to thank
00:51:20all the people
00:51:20that made it possible.
00:51:21Frank Biondi,
00:51:22Tony Cox,
00:51:23Showtime,
00:51:23Jay Larkin,
00:51:24Roy Langboard.
00:51:26I want to thank
00:51:26my lovely wife Henrietta.
00:51:28Everybody that stood with us
00:51:29for four years
00:51:30has been a mission
00:51:31calculatedly and designed.
00:51:33We went about our business
00:51:34bringing Mike back.
00:51:35We had the table prepared for him
00:51:37and now we promised
00:51:37to the public
00:51:38one undisputed champion
00:51:40to take the confusion
00:51:41out of the business.
00:51:42We're appealing
00:51:43to all of the organization.
00:51:44Let champion,
00:51:45let Tyson
00:51:46unify the title.
00:51:47Fight all mandatories.
00:51:48We guarantee you
00:51:49all mandatories.
00:51:51We fight everybody
00:51:51as a contender
00:51:52or a pretender.
00:51:53It doesn't matter
00:51:54but this is a mission
00:51:55that I feel
00:51:56this is the crowning
00:51:57achievement of my career
00:51:58to be able to deliver
00:52:00to Mike Tyson
00:52:01the heavyweight championship
00:52:02again after four years
00:52:03of being absent.
00:52:04And all the people
00:52:05that have to make
00:52:05this possible,
00:52:06we certainly are
00:52:07appreciative to it
00:52:08and I must thank
00:52:08something to Redstone
00:52:09for being there for us
00:52:11and letting us have
00:52:11Showtime as a vehicle,
00:52:13a forum to be able
00:52:13to use.
00:52:14But Matt Blank,
00:52:16God bless Matt Blank,
00:52:17he's such a tremendous guy.
00:52:18He's a guy that works
00:52:19right along with us.
00:52:20He inherited us
00:52:21so to speak.
00:52:22He was there all the time
00:52:23with Tony Cox
00:52:24but now he's doing
00:52:25a human's job.
00:52:26You couldn't ask
00:52:26for nobody better
00:52:27than Matt Blank
00:52:28and I'm going to tell you
00:52:29something, Ferdy.
00:52:29We're going around the world
00:52:30undeniably Showtime
00:52:32boxing is the best
00:52:33in the business.
00:52:34We've been on one trip
00:52:34around the world.
00:52:35And we're going to continue
00:52:36to do it, man.
00:52:36Where's our first stop?
00:52:37Is it Zeldon?
00:52:38We don't know.
00:52:39We're going to make
00:52:40a decision.
00:52:41We know we got a judge
00:52:42that has given us
00:52:43some type of order
00:52:44that we're not supposed
00:52:46to say who the winner
00:52:47or the loser
00:52:47of this fight
00:52:48is going to be.
00:52:49We want to respect
00:52:49that judge
00:52:50although we don't reveal
00:52:51that he has no jurisdiction
00:52:53but yet the court
00:52:54and the system
00:52:55of these great United States,
00:52:56the greatest country
00:52:57in the world by none,
00:52:59we're going to respect
00:52:59that until he lifts that off.
00:53:01We want to make
00:53:02an announcement right now
00:53:03and we are handicapped
00:53:04for our respect
00:53:05for the American system
00:53:06of Jewish Brutus.
00:53:07But as soon as they
00:53:07get that off of us,
00:53:08we're ready to tell you
00:53:09where we're going
00:53:10and Showtime is going.
00:53:11It's a Tyson era.
00:53:12Now, I know you're
00:53:13a judge of boxing.
00:53:15Realistically,
00:53:15how do you assess
00:53:16realistically,
00:53:17Tyson's performance tonight?
00:53:19Tyson was magnificent.
00:53:21Tyson, as I've proclaimed,
00:53:24predicted, prognosticated,
00:53:25this is something
00:53:27that he's better
00:53:27than he ever was.
00:53:28It is no such thing
00:53:29as he the old Tyson,
00:53:30as he's rusty,
00:53:31can he do what he did before?
00:53:32He's better
00:53:33than he's ever been before
00:53:34because he's more focused,
00:53:35more disciplined,
00:53:36more devastating
00:53:37and you see him
00:53:38waiting for his moves
00:53:38and you see him
00:53:39in the end of fighting
00:53:40when the man is holding
00:53:40to go down, up,
00:53:42back over, under,
00:53:43over, up again.
00:53:44I mean, it's tremendous,
00:53:45Ferdy.
00:53:45You're the fight, doctor.
00:53:46And if you're like
00:53:47Dr. Zhivago,
00:53:47you can prescribe
00:53:48the case and diagnosis.
00:53:50Let me say it
00:53:50from Dr. Zhivago
00:53:51to Dr. Jim Hill
00:53:52who is waiting
00:53:53to talk to us
00:53:53and thank you, Don.
00:53:56Okay, Ferdy,
00:53:57thank you very much.
00:53:57Well, Tommy,
00:53:58wow, I guess
00:53:59that's all we can say.
00:54:00That's really amazing.
00:54:02At the beginning
00:54:03of our telecast,
00:54:04you said Frank Bruno
00:54:05had a chance
00:54:05in the first four rounds.
00:54:06After that,
00:54:07it was Mike Tyson.
00:54:08It didn't even get that far.
00:54:09I think he went out there
00:54:09with that same thing in mind
00:54:11and tried to, you know,
00:54:12turn it into a war.
00:54:13But I think once he felt
00:54:13Tyson's power,
00:54:14definitely saw the quickness,
00:54:15I think it changed
00:54:16his attitude a little bit.
00:54:17It looked to me
00:54:18as though Bruno
00:54:19was fighting
00:54:20a defensive fight.
00:54:22I think he started out
00:54:22to fight an offensive fight,
00:54:24but like I said,
00:54:24once he felt the power
00:54:25and saw the speed of Tyson,
00:54:26I think it reversed
00:54:27everything in his mind.
00:54:30From about the middle
00:54:30of the second round on,
00:54:31it seemed like he was
00:54:32trying to just survive there.
00:54:33He had the cut
00:54:33that he was worried about.
00:54:35So, you know,
00:54:35Tyson was very,
00:54:36very impressive
00:54:36to me tonight.
00:54:37Do you think that
00:54:38even though Bruno
00:54:38was a champion
00:54:39that maybe he was
00:54:40a little intimidated
00:54:41because this is the first time
00:54:42he was going in
00:54:43to defend his championship?
00:54:44And Mike's been
00:54:44in this situation
00:54:45many times before.
00:54:46Well, Tyson definitely
00:54:47has been in this situation
00:54:48a lot.
00:54:48I tell you,
00:54:49Bruno coming over here,
00:54:50you know,
00:54:50the reemergence of Tyson,
00:54:52I think might have
00:54:52got to him a little bit.
00:54:53But, you know,
00:54:54he's one of the nicest
00:54:55gentlemen in the world.
00:54:56He come over here
00:54:57and a lot of his fans
00:54:57followed him over,
00:54:58helped him out,
00:54:59support him,
00:54:59and, you know,
00:55:00he's got nothing
00:55:01to be ashamed of
00:55:01because I believe
00:55:02he was in there
00:55:02with one of the best
00:55:03fighters in the world
00:55:03tonight.
00:55:03Okay, we heard Don Keane
00:55:04talk about the unification
00:55:05of all the divisions
00:55:07and everything.
00:55:08What would you like
00:55:08to see happen
00:55:09as far as the unification
00:55:10is concerned right now?
00:55:11Well, I think, you know,
00:55:11Tyson certainly is going
00:55:12to turn around
00:55:13and fight one of the
00:55:13other champions, I think.
00:55:14You know, the two people
00:55:15that you've got to keep
00:55:16in mind is Lennox Lewis
00:55:17and Riddick Bowe.
00:55:18You know, these are two
00:55:18of the best heavyweights
00:55:19out there also.
00:55:20And, you know,
00:55:21they've been on this
00:55:21on-again, off-again
00:55:22situation.
00:55:23I think that those guys
00:55:24need to step up to the plate
00:55:25or go to the dugout
00:55:26because people are going
00:55:27to lose interest
00:55:27in that fight.
00:55:28Now, let's look down
00:55:29the road just a little bit.
00:55:31What fights would you
00:55:32like to see from the top
00:55:33contenders take place
00:55:34right now?
00:55:36I believe that,
00:55:37obviously, the Riddick Bowe
00:55:38Lennox Lewis fight
00:55:39is something that has
00:55:40to happen sometime.
00:55:41But any fight that Tyson
00:55:42has from this point on
00:55:43is going to gather
00:55:44a lot of attention.
00:55:45Man, it's been a lot
00:55:46of fun, hasn't it?
00:55:46It's been a blast, man.
00:55:47It's been great.
00:55:48Thanks so much for being here.
00:55:49You better believe it.
00:55:49Thank you, Tommy.
00:55:50Now, for some final thoughts
00:55:51on the main event,
00:55:52let's go back to ringside
00:55:53to Steve, Ferdy, and Bobby.
00:55:54Gentlemen.
00:55:55All right, Jim and Tommy,
00:55:56thanks very much.
00:55:57Well, Ferdy, I've got to ask you.
00:55:59Mike Tyson silenced
00:56:01the British fans.
00:56:03Did he silence
00:56:04his critics tonight?
00:56:05I think he did.
00:56:05I think that was
00:56:06a performance worthy
00:56:07of the old Tyson.
00:56:09It was fierce.
00:56:10It was determined.
00:56:11He punched in bunches.
00:56:12He punched with the accuracy.
00:56:13He even compared himself
00:56:15to Henry Armstrong.
00:56:15He's a ring historian.
00:56:16He's right.
00:56:17He punched like
00:56:18Henry Armstrong.
00:56:18So I think he's back.
00:56:19I think the fires
00:56:20of the desire to become
00:56:21a ring legend is there.
00:56:23I think, in short,
00:56:24the era of Tyson
00:56:25has arrived
00:56:26and the Tyson train
00:56:27has left the station
00:56:28to go around the world
00:56:29in many fights.
00:56:30And before I leave,
00:56:32let me say that
00:56:33I would like to apologize
00:56:34to my colleague
00:56:35for a jibe
00:56:36and a jest
00:56:37that I made,
00:56:37Larry Merchant,
00:56:39which I hope,
00:56:40being colleagues,
00:56:41he understands
00:56:41I was just joking.
00:56:42I'm perfectly willing
00:56:43to concede
00:56:44that he's much better
00:56:45looking than me.
00:56:46However,
00:56:46I'm taller than he is.
00:56:48All right.
00:56:49Very good.
00:56:50Now, Bobby Chase,
00:56:51that's a tough fact
00:56:52to follow.
00:56:52I don't know.
00:56:53Bobby,
00:56:53has Mike Tyson
00:56:54restored his credibility?
00:56:56I don't think
00:56:56there's any doubt
00:56:57about it, Steve.
00:56:57I mean,
00:56:58he was ferocious.
00:56:59You can see
00:56:59that Frank Bruno
00:56:59was intimidated
00:57:00the first punch.
00:57:01Put a notice
00:57:02to Frank Bruno
00:57:02that, yes,
00:57:03not only my back,
00:57:04but I'm a little
00:57:04stronger, too.
00:57:05I weigh a little bit more
00:57:06and I got four years
00:57:07of hunger
00:57:08stored up inside me,
00:57:09four years of aggression
00:57:10that I'm going
00:57:10to let loose on you.
00:57:11I think the heavyweights
00:57:12were all put on notice
00:57:13today.
00:57:13Frank Bruno
00:57:13has been fighting
00:57:14better as of recent times
00:57:15than he did in 89.
00:57:16He was 20 pounds
00:57:17bigger and stronger,
00:57:18but only lasted
00:57:19approximately half the time.
00:57:20All right.
00:57:21It looks like
00:57:22Bruce Seldon is next,
00:57:23the WBA champion.
00:57:25What kind of problems
00:57:26does he pose for Tyson?
00:57:26Well, Bruce Seldon
00:57:27has one of the best jabs
00:57:28in the heavyweight division.
00:57:29Now, he also has
00:57:29a question,
00:57:30well, Tim,
00:57:30we're all going to have
00:57:30to watch that very carefully
00:57:32when he gets hit.
00:57:32Does he have the heart?
00:57:33Does he have the resilience
00:57:34to come back
00:57:35and do what's necessary
00:57:35to put that jab
00:57:36back in Mike Tyson's face,
00:57:37Steve?
00:57:38That's the key.
00:57:39Somebody's got to hit Mike.
00:57:39Somebody's got to make
00:57:40Mike respect him.
00:57:41And right now,
00:57:42Mike respects no one.
00:57:43He believes he's the best.
00:57:44He is a locomotive
00:57:46with one direction forward
00:57:47that are your
00:57:47undisputed title.
00:57:48Well, this was closure.
00:57:49I mean, this is quite different
00:57:50from the last time
00:57:51we were here, huh,
00:57:52with Tyson McNeely.
00:57:53Oh, yeah.
00:57:53It was, I tell you what,
00:57:55it was old-time boxing
00:57:56back in my blood.
00:57:57It's boiling
00:57:58because it's just like
00:57:59the old Great Alley fights.
00:58:01Exciting.
00:58:02All right.
00:58:02That's it from ringside.
00:58:03Let's go back up
00:58:04to Jim Hill.
00:58:05Jim.
00:58:05As we conclude
00:58:06our coverage tonight,
00:58:07let's recap the results
00:58:09of tonight's
00:58:09five-fight card.

00:58:50by referee Mills Lane
00:58:52after Tyson came out

00:59:08who was making
