WBC No 1. Contender and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson returns to take on Brian Nielsen on Showtime Boxing from Copenhagen, Denmark
Transcript
00:00:00He needs a high-profile fight to gain much-needed recognition.
00:00:06As we take you into, first, the dressing room of the man people came to see here in Denmark,
00:00:11a beefed-up Mike Tyson.
00:00:13While Nielsen's a star here, Tyson's the spectacle.
00:00:16Many back in the States have grown weary of his act,
00:00:18but no matter how you analyze it, he's still the biggest name in boxing.
00:00:21And during a press conference Thursday,
00:00:23Brian Nielsen was accused of uttering a derogatory remark at Tyson in Danish.
00:00:27Members of Tyson's camp reacted angrily.
00:00:30I asked Tyson, or Nielsen, if it was racially motivated.
00:00:33He said he's not a racist.
00:00:34The word he meant was clown.
00:00:36It was not directed at Tyson, he said, but at members of Tyson's team in particular,
00:00:40one who is there to rile and annoy Tyson's opponents.
00:00:46Coming up next from Parkin Stadium here in Copenhagen, Denmark,
00:00:50it's the main event, Mike Tyson versus Brian Nielsen.
00:00:53Well, a pair of upcoming title fight rematches figure to reshape the heavyweight landscape.
00:01:01Next month, Hasim Rahman and Lennox Lewis will meet again,
00:01:04with Rahman trying for an instant replay of the upset KO he scored in April.
00:01:08The other title holder is John Ruiz,
00:01:10who will engage in a rubber match with Evander Holyfield on a date to be determined.
00:01:14All four of these fighters have been relatively active,
00:01:16but for a large portion of the public,
00:01:18Mike Tyson remains the most compelling heavyweight in the world.
00:01:21It's been nearly a year since Tyson's last fight.
00:01:24A bizarre stoppage of Andrew Gulotta later changed to a no contest
00:01:28because Tyson refused to take a pre-fight drug test.
00:01:31Since then, he's been plagued by a laundry list of personal problems.
00:01:34Here's Tyson's recent story, which continues to make headlines.
00:01:38I was a little bit disappointed.
00:01:55It would have been good if we could have kept fighting.
00:01:56If he shouldn't have came out for the next round, at least,
00:01:59that he has quit.
00:02:00A year has passed since that six-minute fiasco against Andrew Gulotta.
00:02:07Since then, the heavyweight division has been filled with excitement
00:02:10and dominated by upsets.
00:02:13But for Tyson, it has been a lonely and frustrating time,
00:02:16plagued by professional inactivity and personal problems.
00:02:20It's rolling with the punches.
00:02:22It's in general.
00:02:23It's cool.
00:02:23I don't judge myself that much.
00:02:26In March, Tyson's longtime rival, WBA champion Evander Holyfield,
00:02:31was convincingly beaten by the lightly regarded John Ruiz.
00:02:34Holyfield didn't look right.
00:02:36It wasn't fighting correct.
00:02:38And I don't know, he just didn't look like himself.
00:02:40I'll kick Lennox Lewis' motherf***ing ass.
00:02:43The verbal sparring for a megabot
00:02:45with IBF and WBC champion Lennox Lewis had already begun.
00:02:49Lennox Lewis, I want his kid to say,
00:02:50Ooh, Daddy, are you okay, Dad?
00:02:53Yeah.
00:02:54But in April, little-known Hashim Rahman
00:02:57upset these plans with a beautifully timed right hand.
00:03:00I saw it coming.
00:03:00Lewis didn't see it coming.
00:03:02Lewis didn't prepare properly for that fight.
00:03:04And he can't take anything away from Rahman
00:03:06because he did prepare.
00:03:07So, you know, it was just a good night for him.
00:03:11Legal battles between rival promoters
00:03:13and contracts of competing networks
00:03:15effectively eliminated Tyson from a title opportunity.
00:03:18That's the politics of boxing.
00:03:21You can't cry with spilled milk.
00:03:24Prosecutors in San Bernardino, California,
00:03:26will not pursue rape charges
00:03:27against the former heavyweight boxing champion.
00:03:30Insufficient evidence there.
00:03:31While training for tonight's fight,
00:03:33Tyson was faced with a hauntingly familiar accusation.
00:03:36I used to know I'd be vindicated
00:03:38because I wasn't guilty of any wrongdoing.
00:03:41However, just three weeks ago,
00:03:43history swiftly repeated itself.
00:03:45Mike Tyson is being accused of sexual assault.
00:03:48But right now, we want to make this very clear
00:03:50Tyson is not facing any charges.
00:03:52This year, like many before it,
00:03:55has been a long and difficult one for Mike Tyson.
00:03:58Will tonight's contest simply be a continuation
00:04:00of a career mired in legal troubles
00:04:03and marred by short fights against mediocre opponents?
00:04:06Or will it serve as a turning point
00:04:08to recapture past glories
00:04:10and regain the title he craves so much?
00:04:13I really want to next year
00:04:15to bring a championship back home.
00:04:17Being a champion, a champion is the name of the game.
00:04:19If you're in there for any other reason,
00:04:20you're in the wrong business.
00:04:26Well, maybe Tyson ought to borrow
00:04:28former world champion Johnny Tapia's nickname,
00:04:31Mi Vita Loca, or My Crazy Life.
00:04:33At least the headlines he'll make tonight
00:04:35will be boxing headlines.
00:04:36But with Mike Tyson, you never know.
00:04:39Let's turn it over to our compadre, Jim Gray.
00:04:42Jim, what are your thoughts on this?
00:04:43Well, Steve, what exactly has become
00:04:45of Mike Tyson these days?
00:04:47In the last five years, he's logged just 14 rounds
00:04:50or about eight minutes annually.
00:04:52Upon coming back, Tyson told us
00:04:54he would take it slow, take his time.
00:04:56Well, he has taken so long
00:04:57that the tortoise has not only passed the hare,
00:05:00the tortoise has passed away.
00:05:02Why so slow?
00:05:03Because Tyson hasn't been motivated,
00:05:05hasn't regained his form,
00:05:06and hasn't, by his own admission this week,
00:05:09been in shape.
00:05:10Well, why are we here in Denmark?
00:05:12Because no one in the United States
00:05:13would pay for this fight.
00:05:15Why this opponent?
00:05:16Because Brian Nielsen is an easy target
00:05:18and popular here in his homeland.
00:05:20So there's the answer.
00:05:22Another quick payday from people
00:05:23who are willing to pay.
00:05:24And I guess there's nothing wrong with that.
00:05:26Nowhere else would this fight sell as many seats
00:05:29because with absolutely nothing on the line,
00:05:32there is not another fighter in the world
00:05:33who could come into any foreign country
00:05:35and put more than 20,000 people in the stands.
00:05:38The fact is, however,
00:05:40most of the public back home
00:05:41has lost interest long ago in Mike Tyson.
00:05:43And that will continue
00:05:44until Tyson decides to fight a worthy opponent.
00:05:48If and when that happens,
00:05:50Mike Tyson will once again be the biggest name
00:05:52and the greatest draw in boxing.
00:05:54Until then,
00:05:55the Universal Tour will go on
00:05:56with people clamoring,
00:05:58hopeful of catching a glimpse of what he was.
00:06:01It's been a year since we've seen Mike Tyson fight.
00:06:03And this week,
00:06:05Tyson himself put an insightful finger
00:06:07on what he hopes is his own pulse
00:06:09when he said,
00:06:10you get old too smart.
00:06:12You know what he said?
00:06:13He said, you get old too soon,
00:06:15smart too late.
00:06:16We know for sure, Steve, that he's older.
00:06:18And now is still yet another opportunity.
00:06:20We can only hope he's a bit wiser.
00:06:22And time may be running out
00:06:24for Mike Tyson on both ends.
00:06:27The clock is ticking.
00:06:28Yeah.
00:06:28As we turn back to former world champion Bobby Chez.
00:06:31Bobby, how difficult has it been for Tyson
00:06:33to stay focused on his career?
00:06:36Well, Steve, as you know,
00:06:37over the years,
00:06:37Mike Tyson has not been too ready
00:06:39to grant UNI personal interviews.
00:06:41He's always sent his trainer,
00:06:42Tommy Brooks,
00:06:42or Jay Bright,
00:06:43another member of Team Tyson,
00:06:44to speak for him.
00:06:45I think that's a question
00:06:46that really has to be asked of Mike.
00:06:48I can't imagine with all the chaos,
00:06:50legal charges,
00:06:51and bizarre occurrences in his life
00:06:52that the focus could be that easy
00:06:54to maintain and keep.
00:06:55Yet somewhere during the course of training camp,
00:06:57he has to stop.
00:06:58He has to put it all behind him.
00:06:59He has to focus on one thing,
00:07:00his opponent, in this case,
00:07:01Brian Nielsen,
00:07:02and I'm sure he has.
00:07:04With that, how about your keys to victory
00:07:05for Tyson versus Nielsen?
00:07:08While Mike Tyson continues his march
00:07:10toward yet another shot
00:07:11at the heavyweight title,
00:07:12the big Dane Brian Nielsen
00:07:13would love to upset his plans.
00:07:18Mike Tyson,
00:07:20take the fight to the inside,
00:07:21number one.
00:07:22He cannot win from the outside.
00:07:23Number two, work the body.
00:07:25He throws incredibly debilitating
00:07:26power shots to the body.
00:07:28And lastly,
00:07:28sometimes it's just as simple as this.
00:07:30Land his power shots.
00:07:31He's that powerful.
00:07:34Mike Tyson on the left here
00:07:35against Julius Francis.
00:07:36This is not the distance
00:07:37Mike wants to be at.
00:07:38He's short, short arms.
00:07:39He wants to get to the inside.
00:07:41Close that gap.
00:07:43Julius Francis lays a lazy jab out here.
00:07:44Mike weaves under it,
00:07:46starts to go to work,
00:07:47and one right uppercut,
00:07:48and this night is over
00:07:49for Julius Francis.
00:07:55Sometimes it's just that simple.
00:08:01Ryan Nielsen a little different.
00:08:02He needs to establish his jab.
00:08:04He needs to keep Mike at bay.
00:08:06If he doesn't establish a jab,
00:08:07he's going to have trouble.
00:08:07And also, push Mike back.
00:08:09If he can push Mike backward,
00:08:10he can neutralize
00:08:11some of that incredible power.
00:08:12And lastly,
00:08:12his best chance
00:08:13is set the fight distance.
00:08:14If he doesn't do it,
00:08:15he has no chance of winning.
00:08:16Here against Dickey Ryan
00:08:18on the right,
00:08:19Nielsen on the left.
00:08:20He keeps Ryan at the end of the jab
00:08:21and keeps that distance for him.
00:08:23He's the taller,
00:08:24ranger fighter,
00:08:25keeping Dickey Ryan
00:08:26at the end of his punches.
00:08:27When he realizes
00:08:28there's no return power,
00:08:29here he is,
00:08:30keeping the distance,
00:08:31setting the range
00:08:31for the fight.
00:08:33Comes back in with a jab
00:08:34to the body,
00:08:35eventually a combination
00:08:36that culminates
00:08:36in a right hand over the top,
00:08:38keeping Dickey Ryan
00:08:39on the defense
00:08:40and at the end of his gloves,
00:08:41it's the only chance
00:08:42he has if he wants
00:08:42to beat Mike Tyson.
00:08:49All right, Bobby,
00:08:50if Tyson wins,
00:08:50he'll be right up there
00:08:51with the legendary
00:08:52Dickey Ryan,
00:08:54the only man to beat
00:08:55Brian Nielsen.
00:08:56Up to the ring
00:08:57for the pre-fight ceremonies.
00:09:08The American national anthem,
00:09:20ladies and gentlemen,
00:09:21Anita Lerke.
00:09:25Oh, say can you see
00:09:33by the dawn's pearly light
00:09:38what so proudly we hailed
00:09:44at the twilight's last gleaming,
00:09:49whose broad stripes
00:09:51and bright stars
00:09:54through the perilous fight.
00:09:58O'er the ramparts
00:10:01we watched
00:10:04were so gallantly streaming,
00:10:08while the rocket
00:10:11had gone,
00:10:14the bombs bursting
00:10:16in air
00:10:19gave food
00:10:20through through the night
00:10:24that a flag
00:10:26was still there.
00:10:28Oh, say does that star-spangled
00:10:34an arrogant light
00:10:40for the land
00:10:43for the land
00:10:44of the field
00:10:46and the hope
00:10:49of the brave.
00:10:52The Danish national anthem,
00:11:05Anita Lerke,
00:11:06Michael Bjørnsson.
00:11:09And of course, you all sing with the Danish National Anthem, Anita Lerke, Michael Bjornsson.
00:11:39And of course, you all sing with us.
00:12:09And of course, you all sing with us.
00:12:39Thank you very, very much.
00:12:44Well, while he's 62-1, Brian Nielsen's great record filled with B&C level opposition.
00:13:10Here's the reaction of the crowd as they see him for the first time.
00:13:29And they will whistle along.
00:13:31And of course, you all sing with us.
00:13:35And of course, you all sing with us.
00:13:36And of course, you all sing with us.
00:14:43He's never really been tested by a legitimate top 10 heavyweight in pink condition.
00:14:48In essence his record handed for an eventual jackpot and here it is reportedly about $800,000.
00:15:05A man who needs no introduction hearing who's from the crowd.
00:15:21But with Tyson we've been conditioned to expect the unexpected which can really put you on edge
00:15:26because we just don't exactly know how it will manifest itself if something happens.
00:15:33His infrequency of fights and questionable level of competition make his bid to regain the heavyweight title.
00:15:39It won't seem like he's taking the easy road to the top.
00:15:41Let's go to the top.
00:15:42Let's go to the top.
00:15:48Let's go to the top.
00:15:58Let's go to the top.
00:16:00Let's go to the top.
00:16:02From a technical standpoint, what do you expect from Tyson here?
00:16:19Will the extra weight be a factor?
00:16:22No, especially early on, I don't think it's a factor.
00:16:24Maybe late if the fight gets there.
00:16:26But really, I expect Mike to come in bobbing, weaving his head,
00:16:28working behind the jab, go right to the body,
00:16:30come up with left hook and uppercuts.
00:16:31I expect him to try and be a one-round knockout artist.
00:16:35Well, in some ways, he's good for boxing.
00:16:38In other ways, he's not.
00:16:39He still gives people a rush.
00:16:41He's charismatic, unpredictable.
00:16:43Let's size him up as we check out the tale of the tape.
00:16:47Tyson, who turned 35 in June, a year younger than Nielsen,
00:16:50at 6'3", a 4-inch height advantage for Nielsen.
00:16:53Tyson also gives away 4 inches in reach.
00:16:55Both claim the scale at the weigh-in Thursday was about 7 pounds off.
00:16:59Nevertheless, Tyson, a career-heavy 239, Nielsen just under 260.
00:17:05Key rules, no standing eight, no three-knockdown rule.
00:17:08A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:17:10And if a fighter is unable to continue due to an accidental foul,
00:17:13he loses by TKO, which is a very questionable rule,
00:17:16generally because it may encourage a fighter to foul,
00:17:19knowing he's behind.
00:17:22So here in Copenhagen, Denmark, we're getting ready for the main event.
00:17:26Mike Tyson and Brian Nielsen set for the official introductions

00:21:40really needing no introduction
00:21:42the world over,
00:21:43wearing his traditional black trunks
00:21:45and fighting out of Catskill,
00:21:47New York,
00:21:48in the United States.
00:21:49He weighed in at 239 pounds,
00:21:52with a record of 48 wins,
00:21:54three losses,
00:21:55two no contests.
00:21:57He has 42 big wins coming by,
00:21:59way of knockout.
00:22:01Ladies and gentlemen,
00:22:02he is currently ranked
00:22:03the WBC number one contender.
00:22:06Here is the former
00:22:07undisputed heavyweight champion
00:22:10of the world,
00:22:11introducing
00:22:12Iron Mike Tyson!
00:22:21And once again,
00:22:23Steve Smoker,
00:22:23our referee in charge,
00:22:25now to give instructions,
00:22:2610 rounds of boxing schedule.
00:22:28My gentlemen,
00:22:29you are given your instructions
00:22:29at the way it leads,
00:22:30if they might command
00:22:31at all times,
00:22:32protect yourself,
00:22:33respect the bell,
00:22:34touch gloves,
00:22:35touch gloves.
00:22:37God bless.
00:22:41Mike Tyson,
00:22:43looking very cut
00:22:44despite the extra weight,
00:22:4621 of his 42 knockouts
00:22:47in the first round.
00:22:50Brian Nielsen,
00:22:52soft in the middle,
00:22:53a big target,
00:22:56throws wide-looping punches,
00:22:57doesn't move his head enough.
00:23:00Will he try to make Tyson
00:23:01fight dirty?
00:23:02Steve Smoker,
00:23:05the referee.
00:23:08There's the bell.
00:23:09Round one.
00:23:14And Tyson goes right to work.
00:23:17Body shots.
00:23:20Mike, there's no let-up in him.
00:23:22He's just unloading everything,
00:23:23all body right now.
00:23:24And as usual,
00:23:25with bad intentions,
00:23:27going to the body
00:23:28and the head now.
00:23:29Stay up, Mike,
00:23:32and stay up, baby.
00:23:34And Nielsen says,
00:23:36bring it on, Mike.
00:23:38Nielsen says he believes
00:23:39he's strong enough
00:23:40to push Mike backward.
00:23:42I'm not sure yet.
00:23:50Well, Nielsen,
00:23:51able to withstand
00:23:53the first wave.
00:23:55Let's see what happens next.
00:23:56A big right hand by Tyson.
00:23:58Nice overhand right.
00:23:59Mike doesn't normally throw
00:24:00a right hand that straight.
00:24:01That was a pretty punch.
00:24:04Nielsen absorbing
00:24:05a lot of punishment early.
00:24:07Tyson missing
00:24:08with a wild left hook.
00:24:10Right now,
00:24:11Nielsen's in the mode
00:24:11of weather the storm
00:24:13and get busy maybe later
00:24:14because right now
00:24:15it's full of defense.
00:24:19Watch your heads, guys.
00:24:20Watch your heads.
00:24:21Nielsen is supposed
00:24:22to be able to move well
00:24:23despite his size.
00:24:25Nice jab in right hand
00:24:26by Nielsen.
00:24:26But so far,
00:24:28it's only backward.
00:24:30He threw one nice one, too,
00:24:31here.
00:24:31Don't put Mike's attention
00:24:32a little bit.
00:24:33Maybe trying to get
00:24:33his pound to flesh.
00:24:36Left hook to the head
00:24:37by Tyson.
00:24:46They want Nielsen to jab.
00:24:48But all he does is hold now.
00:24:51This is probably
00:24:52a wise decision.
00:24:58Tyson continues to unload.
00:25:02He's got Nielsen
00:25:04against the ropes.
00:25:07A minute to go
00:25:09in round one.
00:25:09Big shot.
00:25:10Big shot.
00:25:14Well, Tyson just loading up
00:25:16with the overhand run.
00:25:17Step, step, step right.
00:25:18Step, step right.
00:25:25Again, Nielsen on the retreat.
00:25:28Big right hand to the head
00:25:29by Tyson,
00:25:30followed up by a left uppercut.
00:25:32Mike's punching
00:25:33through the gloves a lot.
00:25:34They're not all getting
00:25:35through clean,
00:25:36but some punching
00:25:37is definitely being absorbed
00:25:38right through the gloves.
00:25:39Don't punch, Mikey.
00:25:40Don't punch.
00:25:41So far,
00:25:42it's been clean.
00:25:45Don't punch.
00:25:46Step, step.
00:25:46Very good.
00:25:47Step, Mikey.
00:25:51The highly regarded
00:25:53Steve Spoga
00:25:53who revered the
00:25:54Hopkins-Trinidad fight.
00:25:59One, two, three,
00:26:02four, five,
00:26:04six, seven,
00:26:05three, four, five,
00:26:06six, seven,
00:26:07nine.
00:26:09Well, Nielsen
00:26:10makes it through the first.
00:26:15Daniel, man,
00:26:16use the builder.
00:26:19Use your jam.
00:26:20All you got to do
00:26:21is use your jam.
00:26:22When you're on the inside,
00:26:24you let him tie you up.
00:26:25Remember how we worked
00:26:26on stepping?
00:26:27All you got to do.
00:26:28Breathe deep.
00:26:29Breathe deep.
00:26:30Relax.
00:26:30Take your time.
00:26:31Relax.
00:26:31Where's the water?
00:26:32Keep those body shots going.
00:26:34It's going to wear them down.
00:26:35Keep the body shots going.
00:26:36Stay raw.
00:26:37Don't lock your legs.
00:26:38You're getting low
00:26:39for the body shots.
00:26:39Look, hey, Trevor,
00:26:40your jab is like a right hand.
00:26:41Keep using that jab.
00:26:43Work off your jab.
00:26:45Mike Tyson going right to the body,
00:26:47working his way in,
00:26:47behind the jab,
00:26:48right hand to the body,
00:26:50trying to dig the uppercuts
00:26:51and hooks in on both sides,
00:26:52and eventually comes up top
00:26:54with a few uppercuts,
00:26:55but he stays almost exclusively
00:26:56to the body in that first sequence
00:26:58for about 30 to 40 seconds
00:27:00in round one.
00:27:01Tommy, get out of cover!
00:27:07In the opening round,
00:27:08Nielsen probing he could take a punch.
00:27:10He took a lot of them.
00:27:12Overhand rights and left uppercuts.
00:27:14Round two, scheduled for 10.
00:27:19Tyson missing with a left hook.
00:27:21And he continues to dig to the body,
00:27:39then a left uppercut to the chin, Tyson.
00:27:41Hard body shots, then upstairs.
00:27:44Goes up because of the sudden you tell, Steve.
00:27:45When you see the head of Nielsen
00:27:46snap back, they hurt.
00:27:49Blood coming out of the mouth of Nielsen
00:27:51after that last series of punches by Tyson.
00:27:59When Nielsen even comes close to landing,
00:28:01the crowd will react.
00:28:03But he hasn't come close to hurting Tyson.
00:28:08A sharp left hook there by Nielsen.
00:28:12Not even phasing Tyson.
00:28:15For a big guy, Nielsen doesn't really have
00:28:16a big, well, no big power.
00:28:18Here, Joe, punch!
00:28:19Pretty good head movement there.
00:28:20He's got a lot of power in that sequence
00:28:21by Tyson defensively.
00:28:26One thing Nielsen does before he has done in the past
00:28:29is throw a reasonable amount of punches for heavyweight.
00:28:32If he can let Mike punch himself out a little bit,
00:28:34cover up, and start to pepper Mike with punches,
00:28:36and get him clean,
00:28:37he has a shot of taking his fight deep,
00:28:39and make some trouble tonight.
00:28:40That's what I'm looking for.
00:28:44He's got a lot of punches for heavyweight.
00:28:45Like this is going to happen.
00:28:46No, no, no, no, no.
00:28:46No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:28:46No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:28:50Nielsen sticking the jab, but doesn't follow it up.
00:28:55And then missing wildly.
00:28:57Nielsen's already landed more punches in this round
00:28:59than he did against Tyson in the whole first round,
00:29:01so maybe that's a little bit of preview of things to come.
00:29:08Push it off, Rod, push it off.
00:29:10Final minute of the second round.
00:29:13Overhand right, partially blocked by Nielsen,
00:29:15who makes a face at Tyson,
00:29:17gets a little left hand into the head of Tyson.
00:29:20Inside, Tyson working.
00:29:32Nielsen just pushing Tyson off
00:29:34and then digging those right uppercuts to the midsection.
00:29:42Nielsen not really throwing anything solid, even hard yet.
00:29:46And I don't know if Mike has a lot of respect for him.
00:29:47Tyson just coming forward.
00:29:48Nielsen said if it can last three or four rounds,
00:29:59he'll be there the entire fight.
00:30:02Well, this is the end of the second.
00:30:06Combination to the head by Tyson.
00:30:07But Nielsen's still standing.
00:30:13And look at the left eye of Nielsen.
00:30:16It is Pup Stanley.
00:30:17Brian, when he comes in with his head, hold it down.
00:30:27Brian, when he comes in with his head, hold it down.
00:30:27Tryk his head down.
00:30:29Or else give you place to him.
00:30:31He'll be able to pull him down.
00:30:32Yeah.
00:30:36It's good to do what you're doing,
00:30:37but let him be able to get caught in his head, Brian.
00:30:40Hold his head down.
00:30:41Okay.
00:30:44Don't worry.
00:30:45It's okay.
00:30:46Give me the end of the towel.
00:30:48Don't worry.
00:30:48It's nothing at all.
00:30:51Don't worry.
00:30:52Brian, tie him up on the inside.
00:30:56Nielsen's showing that he's here to at least fight.
00:31:00Not here to just dance and get a beat.
00:31:02And look a little cockiness, a little defiance.
00:31:07Here's where it appears that they clashed heads right there.
00:31:09Can't tell, though, if that opened the cut or not.
00:31:15A defiant Brian Nielsen enters into round three.
00:31:18The left eye was cut late in the last round
00:31:23on a clash of heads.
00:31:26Good first appeared from the nostril of Nielsen
00:31:29just 40 seconds into round two.
00:31:31Okay.
00:31:32But it's right over the eye, I believe there, Bobby,
00:31:35and it could be dripping into the eye,
00:31:37clouding his vision.
00:31:37The three is right between the eyebrow and the eyelid.
00:31:41It's like right on the eyelid.
00:31:42It's pretty deep.
00:31:44We'll see if this corner can do it.
00:31:46We'll see if it becomes a factor.
00:31:49Nielsen's game.
00:31:53Left hook to the head by Tyson.
00:31:55Fulls it up with a straight right.
00:31:56Now again on the inside.
00:32:03Nielsen not pushing Tyson back,
00:32:05as he said he was going to try and do with the jab.
00:32:07Although, here he attempts a nice right hand.
00:32:19Nielsen's cute.
00:32:20He's clever.
00:32:20Don't punch.
00:32:21Don't punch.
00:32:21Very good.
00:32:22Very good.
00:32:22The cover's pretty good for a big man.
00:32:23Gets in a little crowd.
00:32:24Puts his arms to the sides.
00:32:26Doesn't let too much come through.
00:32:27Too clean.
00:32:28But Mike is devastating with that power.
00:32:30Nielsen bouncing off the ropes.
00:32:32He's getting rocked by Tyson.
00:32:39Don't punch.
00:32:40Don't punch.
00:32:40Don't punch.
00:32:41Don't punch.
00:32:41Tyson with an opponent here
00:32:43who is largely standing right in front of him.
00:32:46Seemingly Taylor May.
00:32:49Frank, don't punch.
00:32:50Don't punch.
00:32:50Let him out.
00:32:51Let him out.
00:32:51Step out, Mike.
00:32:52Let him out.
00:32:53Still an open fight, Steve.
00:32:55For any fighter, when a fighter looks to just block and hold.
00:32:58Block and hold.
00:32:59It's going to be a long night of attrition for both guys.
00:33:02But he is inflicting much punishment these first three rounds.
00:33:06On the body and head of Nielsen.
00:33:14Good shot.
00:33:17Quick.
00:33:18Don't punch.
00:33:18Don't punch.
00:33:19Step.
00:33:19Step.
00:33:20Up till now, Nielsen able to weather
00:33:24some punishing body shots by Tyson.
00:33:27The crowd getting behind Nielsen.
00:33:30Quick.
00:33:30Get off his neck.
00:33:31Bye.
00:33:32Get off his neck.
00:33:33Dianne, don't do that.
00:33:34Please do it.
00:33:35Don't do that, Dianne.
00:33:36Don't do that, Dianne.
00:33:36Don't do that, Dianne.
00:33:36Don't do that.
00:33:36Dianne.
00:33:40Oh, quick combination of that head.
00:33:42And down goes Nielsen.
00:33:44We got Cole with a clean upper cut.
00:33:45A hook in the right hand.
00:33:46And another hook.
00:33:48And he is in trouble.
00:33:48Down for the second time in his career.
00:33:51Hey, how do you feel, Brian?
00:33:52You're beautiful, baby.
00:33:5616 seconds to get through.
00:34:01Quick.
00:34:01Don't punch.
00:34:02Don't punch.
00:34:02Don't punch.
00:34:06Nielsen looking to make it to the bell.
00:34:08Oh, oh, oh.
00:34:09Oh, oh.
00:34:09Oh, oh, oh.
00:34:09Oh, oh, oh, oh.
00:34:10Staying over here.
00:34:11Low blow there, Steve.
00:34:12A low blow, and Brian Nielsen doubled over.
00:34:16Oh, brother, as he goes down to his knees right in front of us.
00:34:23A low blow just in the bell to end the round.
00:34:27Five minutes to recover.
00:34:28Come on, Brian.
00:34:28Come on, Brian.
00:34:29Will he be able to continue?
00:34:31No.
00:34:31If it's unintentional, which it was, and he does not come out,
00:34:36he gets five minutes.
00:34:38You heard Steve Svogar.
00:34:39The rule is, if a fighter is unable to continue due to an accidental foul,
00:34:43he loses by TKO.
00:34:46But Steve Svogar indicating unintentional,
00:34:48so he'll get five minutes.
00:34:50But after that five minutes, if he does not come out,
00:34:52he is a loser by TKO.
00:34:54Yes.
00:34:55We'll take a look at the nice combination by Mike Tyson on the inside.
00:34:58There's the hook in the right hand.
00:34:59The second hook in the right hand that raises.
00:35:02Nielsen was already on his way down.
00:35:07His legs seem to be on him,
00:35:08and then Mike unloads the left hook right here.
00:35:11Oh, south of the border, and very, very solid.
00:35:16You hear the crowd reacting.
00:35:18These are Danish rules.
00:35:21The one about the losing by TKO on an accidental foul.
00:35:25The one about the losing by TKO.
00:35:29So he'll have five minutes to recover.
00:35:33It's gonna take some time.
00:35:33Keep your fighter ready.
00:35:34All right.
00:35:35It was unintentional.
00:35:36Please, Michael, keep up.
00:35:37Please.
00:35:39I can't.
00:35:45Steve Svogar taking charge.
00:35:47He clanged it on his neck, and it made the shot go low.
00:35:49Don't go on his neck.
00:35:50You're doing great.
00:35:51Don't go on his neck.
00:35:52It's a very, very strange rule.
00:36:09The referee has pressure to determine
00:36:11whether it's intentional or unintentional.
00:36:12He said it was unintentional.
00:36:15Yeah.
00:36:16He's got a good one.
00:36:18He's got a bad one.
00:36:18He's got a bad one.
00:36:19He's got a bad one.
00:36:19Yeah.
00:36:20Yeah.
00:36:20Yeah.
00:36:21He's got a bad one.
00:36:21Yeah.
00:36:25He says he's all right, and he's going to continue.
00:36:27He didn't even need the allotted five minutes.
00:36:30Come on now.
00:36:31Come on, come on.
00:36:32He didn't even need the allotted five minutes.
00:36:36Come on now. Come on, come on.
00:36:39A gutty Brian Nielsen only needed
00:36:41about a minute 30.
00:36:48So they continue here.
00:36:50It is round four.
00:36:52One punch, one punch, guys.
00:36:53That nice, that nice.
00:36:55Tyson's longest fight since Francois Botha
00:36:58a couple of years ago.
00:36:59Well, certainly Mike needs to get the rounds in.
00:37:03And Nielsen, the longer goes, the better his chances are.
00:37:06But he's losing every round big.
00:37:07Good shot.
00:37:08Great, don't punch.
00:37:09Don't punch, very good.
00:37:12Down in the third round.
00:37:15And then doubled over in pain
00:37:17after the low blow at the end of the round.
00:37:20Great, don't punch, don't punch.
00:37:21That's it.
00:37:23Mike, you break out of there, Mike.
00:37:27Nielsen, who has to still be kneeling
00:37:29from the effects of that knockdown
00:37:31has tried to hang tough here against Tyson.
00:37:35I'm not sure that knockdown got his attention,
00:37:36but when he stood up, he seemed to have clear eyes
00:37:39and his legs seemed to be under him.
00:37:40But that low blow steam that takes some starts
00:37:42right back out of him, if it wasn't deep low.
00:37:44And the rope saved him from going
00:37:46into the expensive seats.
00:37:49Pitliff took on the inside of the jaw by Tyson.
00:37:51Oh, man, did that get the attention of Nielsen.
00:37:54He took a huge breath after that one.
00:38:07Oh, a heavy right hand
00:38:08after the left uppercut by Tyson.
00:38:10Good.
00:38:12Mike's trying to work through those gloves,
00:38:13and he's so powerful.
00:38:14Sometimes, even if your hands are up, he splits them.
00:38:18But he's a little frustrated with the tight defense
00:38:20that the big Dane's moving up.
00:38:25Pitliff don't punch.
00:38:26Don't punch.
00:38:27I'm here.
00:38:30Nielsen hoping Tyson punches himself out.
00:38:34Hey, but right now, he's doing it on Nielsen.
00:38:37Unfortunately for the Dane.
00:38:43These punches by Nielsen, being telegraphed.
00:38:47And Tyson continues to have his way every round.
00:38:51I'm here.
00:38:52I'm here, Brian.
00:38:53Come on.
00:38:53Hands up, guys.
00:38:54Hands up.
00:38:55If you don't have some power
00:38:56and give something Mike to respect,
00:38:58you will definitely not get anything, Mike.
00:38:59You need to get your pound of flesh.
00:39:01Right now, Nielsen can't.
00:39:02Put your head up.
00:39:03Keep your head up, okay?
00:39:04That's all right.
00:39:05He's all right.
00:39:06Come on.
00:39:06Steve Smoker warning Tyson to keep his head up.
00:39:10That straight right by Nielsen was blocked by Tyson.
00:39:13Keep your head up so he doesn't clash heads with Nielsen.
00:39:20It's already has been a problem.
00:39:22Nice jab for Mike.
00:39:23He's gotten away from the jab.
00:39:24We're all just about power now.
00:39:26Digging body shot with the right hand.
00:39:28Oh, a series of right uppercuts by Tyson.
00:39:32And those for the head of Brian Nielsen.
00:39:35Almost everything is connecting by Tyson.
00:39:42Final seconds, and that's it for the four.
00:39:47Well, he's made it this far.
00:39:48You've got to drink some water.
00:40:17Let's revisit the knockdown in round three.
00:40:21Mike Tyson working on the inside.
00:40:24Gets through with that right hand,
00:40:25but then he starts to work the left hand around and right again.
00:40:28And that left hook sends Nielsen crashing to the floor.
00:40:33Right before the very end of that round.
00:40:35A low blow landed by Mike Tyson.
00:40:37We'll see if we can get a better look at it.
00:40:38That one is on the belt line.
00:40:42That one hit white.
00:40:43That hit the white belt line.
00:40:45Technically not a low blow.
00:40:47What movement?
00:40:49Round five.
00:40:50So much for Tommy Brooks' prediction.
00:40:53Tyson's trainer of a fourth round knockout for his man.
00:40:56And we reiterate that Brian Nielsen indicated
00:41:00if he can get past the fourth round without getting knocked out,
00:41:04which he has done,
00:41:05he'll be there the whole fight.
00:41:07We shall see.
00:41:12Tyson all over Nielsen.
00:41:16All right, Brian.
00:41:17Vicious shots upstairs.
00:41:26Left-right combination up to the head
00:41:28by Tyson.
00:41:30Some of that got through.
00:41:33Mike Tyson punching and fighting when he wants to,
00:41:36resting when he wants to.
00:41:37Nielsen not giving him anything to worry about pretty much.
00:41:41And again, those long punches by Nielsen being telegraphed,
00:41:46allowing Tyson plenty of time to duck away.
00:41:51Mike there, and then he countered with a left uppercut
00:41:53to the chin to Tyson.
00:41:55And most of Nielsen's punches are all arm punches,
00:41:57to Steve.
00:41:57They're not big power shots.
00:42:03The crowd trying to get behind and inspire the game,
00:42:08but he's going to need more than crowd support.
00:42:12Big right, heavy right hand to the head by Tyson.
00:42:14He is just teeing off.
00:42:16Freak, don't punch, don't punch.
00:42:19Punishing Nielsen here through four-plus rounds.
00:42:23Freak, don't punch, don't punch.
00:42:24Listen, trying to come forward and just smother Mike's punches
00:42:27and hold on to use his weight to walk him backwards
00:42:29just to stay at harm's way.
00:42:32And a jab by Tyson.
00:42:34And now Nielsen tying him up.
00:42:46Nielsen has not, as strong as he is, has not been able to push Tyson back.
00:42:50He just nailed Tyson with a right hand.
00:42:51Tyson walked into it.
00:42:52But it wasn't a right hand.
00:42:53It was a big slap, swing, wide.
00:42:57Not something I guess we're about to say.
00:42:58He's coming in.
00:42:59He's coming in, guys.
00:43:00The crowd hoping for a miracle here.
00:43:04The cut opens up over the left eye of Nielsen, who's getting handled.
00:43:11Big uppercut by Mike, double left uppercut in the right hand.
00:43:18Step out, Mike. Step out, babe. Step out.
00:43:19Go.
00:43:20The cut of the left eyelid.
00:43:24That's only one of many worries for Nielsen right now.
00:43:27Step way back.
00:43:28Let it run.
00:43:29Let it run.
00:43:30Let it run.
00:43:31Let it run.
00:43:32Let it run.
00:43:33Let it run.
00:43:38The cut of the left eyelid.
00:43:40That's only one of many worries for Nielsen right now.
00:43:43Step way back.
00:43:44Let it run.
00:43:48Not many thought it would go this far.
00:43:50Whoo!
00:43:53Whoo!
00:43:54Hey, look.
00:43:56Look at all the jabs like you're using it.
00:43:57Okay, now, like I told you the last round,
00:44:00you're looking at him, there are a big jump there right here,
00:44:02The man is on his heels. He can't see double triple up with the jab. Then looking at the jab. Then you drop that right hand in there and then dig that body shot just like we worked on back in the locker room. Okay. How do you feel? Great. Fantastic.
00:44:25Short combinations coming to you. They're working for you. Make a miss. Come on punch. You're doing good. Keep it up.
00:44:32We're going to see Tyson on the way in. Now Niels is going to throw out a little jab here. But the right hand is not that clean. He throws it and loops it around. Just catches Mike right on the chin there. But it's a real slap. Watch. It's a little jab out there. And it's just a slap. It's not a good clean right hand. The crowd made it seem like it was more than what.
00:44:52One more look. Get out of here. Get out of here. Again just a smack and not even clean. Just grazing at best.
00:44:57Round six. The longest Tyson fight since Holyfield won in 1996. And he lost that. The last time he won a fight past the fifth round was versus Razor Ruddock, Ruddock 2, 10 years ago.
00:45:13He hasn't done 10 rounds or more in five years. I'm sorry. Nielsen is so big at 259. But he's not a puncher. He's big. Very strong physically.
00:45:21Not big. One of his assets was that he threw a lot of punches at work as a punch. Not coming close with Mike.
00:45:28Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
00:45:30Nielsen basically in a survival mode right now.
00:45:33I completely agree with Tyson. He's just looking to stay the distance. It's a moral badge of courage. A moral victory of sorts.
00:45:44If he goes the distance, forget about winning. If he just goes the distance because he's losing every round, they may anoint him king of Denmark.
00:45:51I wouldn't be shocked.
00:45:56I'm not sure what that says about Tyson, although Tyson not looking bad.
00:46:00I was just going to say, Steve, some people can get into a defensive mode.
00:46:03Come here, come here, come here.
00:46:04James, bone pressure Smith years ago, he just made sure he didn't get hurt.
00:46:07But Mike never really tried to win, but never, didn't want to get hurt.
00:46:10Never left himself open to get hurt.
00:46:12Nielsen's doing something similar.
00:46:14Not really fighting Mike that much, but not getting hurt that much.
00:46:19Don't punch, don't punch, don't punch.
00:46:26With the exception of that low blow, which was borderline, and the unintentional clash of heads, it's been a fairly clean situation.
00:46:39Nobody's trying to really induce anybody into a dirty situation.
00:46:46Nielsen's doing a lot of holding, and Mike's just trying to beat on anything that he can.
00:46:49You know, he's taking his time quite a bit because he has no sense of urgency.
00:46:54Nielsen's not coming back with a lot of counterpunches.
00:46:56Mike can do what he wants, and I think it's really hard to look good with this type of opponent with Mike's style anyway.
00:47:01The one knockdown, the 2.30 mark of round three.
00:47:04Nielsen went down, the ropes saving him from going into the seats.
00:47:08Off a barrage of punches.
00:47:11Don't punch, don't punch.
00:47:12Very good, very good.
00:47:14Nielsen just hanging around.
00:47:17Oh, a big right hand by Tyson to the head.
00:47:20Left uppercut started there too, Steve.
00:47:22He got his head up in here and almost took it off.
00:47:23Another slashing right, a right cross.
00:47:25Nielsen with a little head fake there.
00:47:29He tries to come back.
00:47:30A right hand to the head by Nielsen.
00:47:32Gets the crowd going.
00:47:35Tyson backing Nielsen into the corner, then Nielsen holding on.
00:47:40Nielsen's got a little bit of attitude.
00:47:43Oh, yes, a lot.
00:47:45Right hand by Tyson to the left ear.
00:47:48But not much power behind that.
00:47:50No, no, no, Mike.
00:47:51Very good.
00:47:52Very good.
00:47:53Nielsen's made it through six.
00:47:55Good work.
00:47:56Good work.
00:47:57Keep working.
00:47:58Good work.
00:47:59Keep working.
00:48:00You're working fantastic, Mike.
00:48:01I'd like to see you double triple up with the jab.
00:48:04I'd like to see you double triple up with the jab.
00:48:06I'd like to see you double triple up with the jab.
00:48:08Combination.
00:48:09Combination.
00:48:10Combination.
00:48:11Combination.
00:48:12What a split bucket.
00:48:13What a split bucket.
00:48:14What a split bucket.
00:48:15What a split bucket.
00:48:16Relax.
00:48:17Take a deep breath.
00:48:18Relax.
00:48:19Take a deep breath.
00:48:20How you feel?
00:48:21Good.
00:48:22Keep working.
00:48:23Working good.
00:48:24Double triple up, man.
00:48:25This guy's just trying to hang on, man.
00:48:26He know it.
00:48:27Famous for his left hook.
00:48:28It appears that Mike lands a little bit overhand right.
00:48:30Right there on the jawline after an uppercut.
00:48:32Got Nielsen's head up in the air a little bit.
00:48:35Take another look at it from the other side.
00:48:37There's the uppercut and the right hand.
00:48:38That right hand does land on the temple and jawline pretty cleanly.
00:48:44Tyson may be wondering what is holding this guy up.
00:48:49Well, at this point, will Tyson's new conditioning coach make a difference, or will it matter?
00:48:56Because Steve Smogler...
00:48:57There's no rule to cover you.
00:48:58I have to declare him the winner.
00:48:59Yeah.
00:49:00Do you want me to do that?
00:49:01Yeah.
00:49:02Tell me in your own way.
00:49:03Yeah.
00:49:04I love you, babe.
00:49:05I'm going to declare him the winner right now.
00:49:07All right, corner?
00:49:08Okay.
00:49:09Mike Tyson!
00:49:10Oh, you heard it.
00:49:11You win!
00:49:12Retired!
00:49:13Mike!
00:49:14It's over!
00:49:15It's gone.
00:49:16That's gone.
00:49:17Wonderful.
00:49:18He had all that he could take, I think, Steve.
00:49:20Bryan Nielsen in his corner, staying on his stole.
00:49:23Yeah!
00:49:24He had every opportunity to continue.
00:49:26Steve Smogler said, I want to hear your words.
00:49:29And he chose not to continue.
00:49:32And immediately, some rugby and friendship ensues.
00:49:37A punishing attack every round that just wore Nielsen down and out eventually.
00:49:51Tysons dominating every round, knocked him down in the third, cut him up.
00:50:01It appeared right when Steve Smogler came over and told him he's the winner.
00:50:04He also came over and congratulated him.
00:50:06And Mike complimented him back.
00:50:07I couldn't hear what he said, but it had something to do with in a little more of a colorful fashion.
00:50:12Good fight.
00:50:13Good fight.
00:50:14Gone good fight.
00:50:15And he was happy about the outcome.
00:50:17Well, I think he earned, you know, Tyson's respect here.
00:50:21The guy got through six.
00:50:23A lot of folks thought this was going to end within just a couple of rounds.
00:50:27I got it.
00:50:28I got it.
00:50:29Let me do it.
00:50:30All right.
00:50:31Let me do it.
00:50:32I got it.
00:50:33Get the official announcement momentarily.
00:50:35Mike Tyson goes to 49-3.
00:50:38Two no contests.
00:50:39I kept saying to Tommy, is he tired?
00:50:42He's to talk.
00:50:43There with his advisor, Shelly Finkel.
00:50:45He's so beautiful.
00:50:46Yeah, he's a real pro.
00:50:47He's like a real pro.
00:50:48You did your thing.
00:50:49All right, now?
00:50:50It motherfucker.
00:50:51No, no, no.
00:50:52That motherfucker took some shit.
00:50:53Jay Wright whispering into his ear.
00:50:55Keep the buzz into the money.
00:50:56Yeah, yeah.
00:50:57We're keeping them.
00:50:58We're keeping them.
00:50:59From the custom auto days.
00:51:00Great.
00:51:01Mike, the guy couldn't take it anymore.
00:51:03You understand?
00:51:04Mike.
00:51:05Yeah, yeah.
00:51:06First time he went down in his leg.
00:51:08You put him down.
00:51:09First time he went down, Mike.
00:51:10Yeah.
00:51:11You put him down.
00:51:12First time he went down, Mike.
00:51:13Now, what's next for Mike Tyson?
00:51:15Anybody's guess.
00:51:16Come on in.
00:51:17No one ever truly knows what to expect with Tyson.
00:51:20Oh, I know so.
00:51:21Let's just hope it's not another year or so before he fights again.
00:51:26All right.
00:51:27All right.
00:51:28All right.
00:51:29You look great.
00:51:30You look great, boy.
00:51:31Mike!
00:51:32So, Brian Nielsen says no boss in essence after the sixth round.
00:51:38And can you blame him?
00:51:41He was just getting destroyed just about every round.
00:51:44Hey!
00:51:45Hey!
00:51:46Hey!
00:51:47Absorbing a lot of punishment.
00:51:50Not the type of fighter that even has a one-punch knockout chance against a guy like Mike Tyson.
00:51:56Okay.
00:51:57Tim, look at this.
00:51:58He's not even breathing.
00:51:59But a moral victory of sorts for the day as he lasted this long with Mike Tyson.
00:52:08Very game competitor.
00:52:12Brian Nielsen will get the official word from Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:52:18And that's it.
00:52:19And that's it.
00:52:20After one-punch boxing.
00:52:21In the seventh round.
00:52:22The winner of the technical knockout.
00:52:25Iron Mike Tyson!
00:52:27Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of one second in round number seven.
00:52:37Brian Nielsen explains to the referee that he could not see out of his left eye.
00:52:42Unable to continue, a referee in charge.
00:52:45Steve Smoker stops the contest.
00:52:48The winner by way of technical knockout, Iron Mike Tyson!
00:52:55Well, the official word is that Nielsen couldn't continue because he couldn't see out of his left eye.
00:53:02Nielsen joins the list of fighters lasting into and getting knocked out of the seventh round against Tyson.
00:53:10That includes Tyrell Biggs and Donovan Razor Ruddock.
00:53:13Let's go to Jim Gray.
00:53:15All right.
00:53:16Thank you very much, Steve.
00:53:17Mike, congratulations.
00:53:18You have not fought in one year.
00:53:20How would you assess your performance?
00:53:21You're not even breathing hard.
00:53:22I've been training in the gym for a long period of time, putting a lot around the boxing.
00:53:26And I'm just all pray to be to God that he made me healthy enough to perform well.
00:53:31And I'd like to say I love all my children, my family, Shawn and Monica, Maida, everyone.
00:53:38I'm back, and I just look forward to fight again.
00:53:42He was a tough guy.
00:53:43It was hard to hit him, but it was good I got those seven rounds in.
00:53:46You've needed the rounds.
00:53:47You've only had 14 rounds in the past five years.
00:53:49Mike, I want to ask you, the assessment might be that people think you should have knocked
00:53:54Brian Nielsen out.
00:53:55However, would you say that this is your best fight in five years?
00:53:58Well, you give me your opinion.
00:54:00What do you think?
00:54:01I would think it is.
00:54:02What do you think?
00:54:03Well, I put up a good fight.
00:54:04He was tough.
00:54:05He was game.
00:54:06I look forward to do better in my next fight, and I'll pray to be to God.
00:54:10Mike, at what point now, you said you wanted to take it slow before you went after the championship.
00:54:15It's been a real slow process.
00:54:17Are you ready now to attempt to fight either Rockman Lewis winner?
00:54:21Well, when I fight those guys, I probably have to train a little harder, and probably
00:54:25two more fights and I'll be ready for the championship of the world.
00:54:27That's right.
00:54:28Two more fights, but will it be a quicker timetable?
00:54:30Because you're almost running out of time, aren't you, with the clock?
00:54:32Oh, no.
00:54:33I feel great.
00:54:34I'm doing great.
00:54:35I'm working great, and I'm getting better at times.
00:54:3840 pounds.
00:54:39240 is what you weighed in.
00:54:41238.
00:54:42238, 239, whatever it was.
00:54:43Maybe the scale was a little bit off, but it's 17 pounds heavier than your last fight.
00:54:47Was that your intention?
00:54:48Well, he's a big guy, and I wanted to put on more weight to put more leverage in my punching,
00:54:53and it was successful in doing so.
00:54:55I was laying hard shots, and he was taking them, and I was saying, God, when he came
00:54:58to the ring, I said, man, you shouldn't have quit.
00:54:59You should have kept fighting, man.
00:55:00You were putting on a hell of a fight.
00:55:02Mike, when you say two more fights, who exactly would you like to face before those guys?
00:55:06Well, I don't know anyone.
00:55:07I'm just looking forward to my shot.
00:55:09Shelly Finkel will make the arrangements, and I'm just looking forward to it.
00:55:13Will you step up the competition?
00:55:14Will it be somebody, a Tua, a Holyfield, somebody who people have heard of and can recognize?
00:55:21Probably one more fight, and then after that fight, yes.
00:55:23Mike, congratulations.
00:55:24Thank you very much, Jim.
00:55:25Good to see you.
00:55:26Thank you, Mike.
00:55:27Let's bring in the Brian Nielsen.
00:55:30Brian, you were an awful game fighter tonight.
00:55:35Are you proud of your performance?
00:55:37What?
00:55:38One time, man.
00:55:39I don't know what to say.
00:55:40Are you proud of your performance?
00:55:41You were an awful game fighter this evening.
00:55:43No, I'm not proud because I want to go this distance.
00:55:48Anthony.
00:55:49Anthony, excuse us.
00:55:50Folks, Mike Tyson's group is trying to leave the ring.
00:55:54That's the confusion here.
00:55:55We'll get through it.
00:55:57Brian, I now know what you just went through for those past seven rounds, to a small degree.
00:56:03You wanted the fight to be stopped.
00:56:05The referee came over and asked you and you said you'd had enough?
00:56:08No, I don't say that.
00:56:09I stopped the fight.
00:56:10You stopped the fight.
00:56:11Yes.
00:56:12You were ready to continue?
00:56:13Yeah.
00:56:14Every time he hit me hard on the left side, I can nothing see.
00:56:18That's, um, what do you say?
00:56:19Yeah.
00:56:20That's bullshit because if he knocked me out, he want to never knock me out.
00:56:25I can take everything.
00:56:26I believe that and I have never been down and he want to never get me down.
00:56:31Well, you went down, you went down in that third round.
00:56:34Yeah.
00:56:35What happened there?
00:56:36Yeah, I'm out of balance and he hit me because he hit hard.
00:56:41And not hard enough to knock me out.
00:56:43A lot of people will say, I mean, you took a tremendous, tremendous beating and you managed
00:56:48to maintain.
00:56:49In fact, even in the sixth round when you were getting hit, you had somewhat of an attitude
00:56:53is what Bobby just said.
00:56:55Were you a little defiant?
00:56:56What?
00:56:57Yes.
00:56:58Yes.
00:56:59Yes.
00:57:00Definitely.
00:57:01English is not your first language and I apologize.
00:57:03Okay.
00:57:04What will you do next?
00:57:05I hope I get a chance more.
00:57:07That's bullshit.
00:57:08I don't get him.
00:57:09I mean, I have my title so I want to defend that.
00:57:12And I hope Tyson want to fight me again and next time I beat him.
00:57:15Nice and fight again.
00:57:16You want that again?
00:57:17Yeah, of course.
00:57:18I want that.
00:57:19What makes you think you could beat the guy after what you just went through?
00:57:21What makes you think you could ever win a fight like that?
00:57:23I get another cut.
00:57:24And I have never get a cut when nothing can see.
00:57:27You couldn't see anything.
00:57:29That's...
00:57:30Do that from my eyes every time he hit me.
00:57:33Brian, you fought a good fight.
00:57:34I hope that.
00:57:35And we've enjoyed our time here at Denmark.
00:57:37Congratulations to you.
00:57:38He said after that, that's everything for me.
00:57:41He said he...
00:57:42Is that what Mike told you?
00:57:43You took everything for me?
00:57:44He said I'm a good fighter and a hard hitter.
00:57:47Indeed you are.
00:57:49Thank you, Brian.
00:57:51Let's bring in the referee here.
00:57:52Brian.
00:57:53Steve.
00:57:54Magnificent.
00:57:55Magnificent heart.
00:57:56God bless you.
00:57:57Hi, Jim.
00:57:58Steve, how are you?
00:57:59Fantastic.
00:58:00Been a busy few weeks for you.
00:58:01Thank God.
00:58:02Thank God.
00:58:03You went over and you told Brian, I love you.
00:58:05Yeah.
00:58:06But I'm gonna listen to your corner.
00:58:07Right.
00:58:08What did he say?
00:58:09He told me that he could not see.
00:58:10He said he was seeing in his Danish.
00:58:12He could not see.
00:58:13It was wiggling.
00:58:14I noticed that the eye was cut.
00:58:16It was swelling and there was like a blood formation.
00:58:19You gave him a choice and his choice was what?
00:58:22Was it his choice or the corner?
00:58:23It was his choice.
00:58:24I did not...
00:58:25I have a high respect for the corner.
00:58:27Yep.
00:58:28I told him, all due respect, I want it from his mouth.
00:58:30When he told me, I said, Brian, you realize that in your country that if you cannot continue,
00:58:37even though I had declared that an accidental butt, they do not go to cards, you lose.
00:58:42Do you understand the term?
00:58:43You lose.
00:58:44He said, yes, I do.
00:58:45I said, I'm now going to go over and declare Mike Tyson the winner by TKO.
00:58:49He said, okay.
00:58:51Steve, there was an accidental headbutt and an accidental, I don't know how you determine that,
00:58:56low blow.
00:58:57A low blow is a low blow.
00:58:59I mean, I...
00:59:00A low blow is a low blow, Jim.
00:59:02But Brian, if you'll know, was pushing his head down, thereby causing the shot.
00:59:06It was an unintentional low blow.
00:59:09Let me say this.
00:59:11Mike Tyson is a true gentleman.
00:59:13We had a nice discussion in the dressing room.
00:59:16He assured me that he would keep it clean and I didn't want his reputation to precede him.
00:59:21He obeyed every command, every break.
00:59:24In this corner, at the bell, he had loaded up.
00:59:28And when I came there and said stop, he stopped it.
00:59:31So I want to just give credit where credit is due.
00:59:34Steve, thank you.
00:59:35And he was magnificent.
00:59:36Thank you, sir.
00:59:37Thank you, sir.
00:59:38All right, Steve.
00:59:39That's the story from up here in the ring.
00:59:40Down to you.
00:59:41Thank you, Jim.
00:59:42A very clear and succinct explanation by the third man of the ring, referee Steve Smoger.
00:59:48He really did a terrific job tonight as we wrap things up from ringside.
00:59:57Let's go back now and listen to Steve Smoger in the corner with Brian Nielsen.
01:00:03What do you say?
01:00:05He can't see.
01:00:07Now listen to me.
01:00:09Timeout!
01:00:10Timeout!
01:00:11Brian, if you can't see Brian, there's no rule to cover you.
01:00:16I have to declare him the winner.
01:00:18Do you want me to do that?
01:00:19Yeah.
01:00:20Tell me in your own way.
01:00:21Yeah.
01:00:22I love you, babe.
01:00:23I'm going to declare him the winner right now.
01:00:24All right, Connor?
01:00:25Yes.
01:00:26Mike Tyson!
01:00:27You win!
01:00:28Retired!
01:00:29Mike!
01:00:30And Connor!
01:00:31Left eye!
01:00:33So Steve Smoger giving Brian Nielsen every opportunity to continue, but the vision was
01:00:40impaired in the left eye, and he stopped it in the seventh.
01:00:43Steve Smoger made it extremely clear.
01:00:45Very definitive.
01:00:46Couldn't have been more fair and done the right thing any better than he did.
01:00:49Perfect job.
01:00:50Consummate referee.
01:00:51All right.
01:00:52We'll be back to sum things up in a moment.
01:00:53But looking ahead, let's see what boxing coverage is coming up in the near future here
01:00:58on Showtime.
01:01:02Showbox The New Generation makes its European debut from Manchester, England on Saturday,
01:01:08October 27th with an exciting fight card featuring WVU Junior Weatherweight Champion Ricky Hatton
01:01:14versus former WVU Intercontinental Lightweight Champion Justin Roswell, as well as Michael Gomez
01:01:20defending his British super featherweight crown against Craig Dougherty.
01:01:24That's at 5 p.m. Eastern and Pacific.
01:01:31And then on November 3rd, we'll present the long awaited 140 pound world title unification bout between two of boxing's best.
01:01:39WBA and WBC champion Kostiasu versus undefeated IBF title holder Zab Judah at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific.
01:01:50And as we wrap things up here ringside from Copenhagen, obviously Tyson won every round emphatically,
01:01:56but he was going up against a defensive minded fighter in a survival mode, Nielsen.
01:02:01Well, Nielsen weighs almost 260 pounds, covered up a lot, didn't offer up a lot of offense, wanted to survive.
01:02:06It's a difficult person to take out.
01:02:08Mike had him on the floor, something he's not used to, Nielsen.
01:02:11Mike did some damage, but again, showed a lot of patience.
01:02:14Not everybody's going to get knocked out.
01:02:15One knockdown in the fight.
01:02:17It occurred back in round number three.
01:02:19Bobby, take us through it.
01:02:20Well, in round number three, Mike Tyson got through.
01:02:22Here you see the defense.
01:02:24Nielsen's hands are up.
01:02:25But what happens is Mike comes up in here and then around him with double left hooks.
01:02:28And what happens is Nielsen gets caught clean.
01:02:32That right hand gets through the guard, brings it forward, and that left hook.
01:02:35And now this one really lets him loose, and he almost flies through the ropes.
01:02:40Literally, if those ropes aren't there, he goes in the second row.
01:02:44We'll look at it again from Mike's back.
01:02:46Coming through, there's the right hand that starts it.
01:02:48And a big left hook there, and now here comes a really big one.
01:02:50And you see Nielsen buckle, and look at those ropes.
01:02:52He really lands hard.
01:02:57Almost going out of the ring, we can see it better from overhead.
01:02:59There's the right hand in the middle that starts it.
01:03:01Then the left hook, and the second left hook that really lands hard.
01:03:04And watch these ropes save Nielsen from being part of the crowd.
01:03:08And round six, also a lot of punishment was dished out by Mike Tyson.
01:03:16He unloaded.
01:03:18He unloaded.
01:03:19This was the last round.
01:03:20That uppercut and right hand were very telling.
01:03:22And you see the look in the eyes of Brian Nielsen is not that good.
01:03:25He shows a little attitude and tries to fight back.
01:03:27But I'll tell you what, his vision might have been blurred from some of the bombs he caught in round six,
01:03:31as well as that headbutt.
01:03:33There's another look at that left hand and that right.
01:03:35One of the best right hands Mike's thrown in that fight.
01:03:37And Nielsen, his legs are never really under him quite the same after that right hand.
01:03:41He tries to make fun and maybe even taunt Mike, but he's not doing much.
01:03:45He's not offering up any offense.
01:03:47Mike demolished him in that round.
01:03:50And before Tyson tries to regain another world championship,
01:03:54he's got to get in there with a leading contender.
01:03:57He talked about having two more fights maybe, but he certainly needs at least one against someone in the top five.
01:04:00Somebody that's known, somebody that's proven, somebody that is a solid commodity that can fight.
01:04:06That's what the people want.
01:04:07That's what Mike needs himself.
01:04:09Bottom line, what do you come away with with regard to Mike Tyson here tonight?
01:04:14Well, what I come away with is Mike has had a long layoff.
01:04:17He was very heavy.
01:04:18I think he needs to get a little lighter.
01:04:19Speed still looked reasonably well.
01:04:20He showed patience.
01:04:21He didn't get taken out of his game.
01:04:23He didn't start fighting dirty.
01:04:24He didn't get frustrated by being held, which we've seen in the past.
01:04:27But what I take away is that he's not quite ready for the big time for the title fight with Lewis or Rockman.
01:04:32Should either one of them win that title.
01:04:34But I really think Mike needs a real solid to him.
01:04:37Somebody's going to box.
01:04:38Somebody's going to move.
01:04:39Somebody's going to test his speed and bang him back.
01:04:41K.O.
01:04:42Round seven.
01:04:43Mike Tyson over Brian Nielsen.
01:04:47And that'll do it for another edition of Showtime Championship Boxing.
01:04:50We hope you enjoyed it.
01:04:51For Bobby Ches, Jim Gray, our entire crew.
01:04:54Steve Albert saying so long from Copenhagen, Denmark.
01:04:57Denmark.
