00:00Seldon vs. Tyson for the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
00:05Tyson was diagnosed with bronchitis in July and it forced a postponement of the WBA Championship until tonight.
00:12During that time, the Seldon-Tyson rivalry got as hot as a Las Vegas summer.
00:16While the Seldon camp accused Tyson of being unprepared in July and faking the illness,
00:21Team Tyson responded that the postponement only delayed Seldon from getting, quote,
00:25the worst beating of his life, end of quote.
00:27Well, the final countdown has begun to the Seldon-Tyson fight,
00:31and this is what it was like here in Las Vegas as time for the showdown approached.
00:46I'm taking Mike.
00:49Mike Tyson's not going to deceive me. Mike Tyson's not going to take my title from me.
00:53Have you seen someone with a jab like Seldon's?
00:58Have you ever seen me fight before?
01:01Nice and third round.
01:04My opponents come into the ring, but they crawl out.
01:10From the roots to the fruit, Mike Tyson will regain all three belts.
01:16Go Seldon.
01:17Mike, what do you think of Bruce Seldon?
01:22Um, I think he's in a lot of trouble.
01:32I've never knocked out opponents.
01:34I made them quit.
01:36I made them quit.
01:37Tyson.
01:49Seldon.
01:50Tyson.
01:51Bruce, of course.
01:52Mike Tyson.
01:53Now, ladies and gentlemen, we are ready for the official weigh-in for our main event champion versus champion for the WBA heavyweight title.
02:01Here is Iron Mike Tyson.
02:03Two hundred and nineteen pounds for Iron Mike Tyson.
02:11Please welcome Bruce Seldon.
02:17Two hundred and twenty-nine pounds for Bruce Seldon.
02:21Here they are, ladies and gentlemen.
02:23Bruce Seldon, Mike Tyson.
02:25Mike Tyson.
02:25Now, it's time to back up all that tough talk in the ring.
02:36Coming up, Bruce Seldon makes his second defense of the WBA heavyweight championship against Mike Tyson, who is attempting to reclaim a title he won nine years ago.
02:47Back down the ringside, once again, Steve Albert.
02:49Steve.
02:49All right, thanks, Jim.
02:52While Mike Tyson has remained one of the most compelling and recognizable celebrities in dramatic contrast, Bruce Seldon is almost anonymous, even though he's a world champion.
03:01In addition, Seldon's camp feels that the perception of their fighter is unfair and inaccurate.
03:06That's since the back-to-back knockout losses to Oliver McCall and Riddick Bowe some five years ago, Seldon is a different person.
03:12The swingy nightlife days are over, but the lingering memory is that of Seldon's chin succumbing twice to Bowe.
03:19About that lasted all of a hundred and eight seconds.
03:22Not only that, but more recently, he was wobbled by Tony Tucker and Joe Hipp.
03:27Then there's the matter of attitude and intimidation.
03:30All of these solid preparation and pre-fight words can become pointless, meaningless once the moment of truth arrives.
03:35As you'll recall, Frank Bruno seemed strong, relaxed, and confident until that long walk to the ring changed his expression to total terror.
03:44But Seldon's handlers insist that won't be the case with their fighter tonight.
03:48Why?
03:49Because he's been in Tyson's presence so many times and fought on several of Tyson's cards.
03:54Therefore, he's emotionally prepared.
03:56But being in Tyson's presence is one thing.
03:59Being in the same ring with him may be quite another.
04:01Once again, Tyson a huge favorite, whopping 22-1 underdog.
04:06Although we heard just a moment ago he dropped to 16-1, which is in any event just unheard of for a champion.
04:13Because of that, is Tyson under more pressure to perform than Seldon?
04:16Ferdie, what's your read on that?
04:17No, I think Tyson's pressure is on himself, and nobody can be as cruel and as tough on Mike as Mike is on himself.
04:24He aspires to ring greatness.
04:25Make no mistake, he wants immortality.
04:27He just doesn't want to be a champion.
04:29So he's a lot of pressure on him to perform.
04:31Also, you've got to think that once you're the champion, as Bruce Seldon is, the pressures to keep the championship are great.
04:37And so there's a lot of pressure on both sides.
04:40If I have to compare, Tyson's pressure on himself is relentless and vicious.
04:43He must make himself fight good, and that's what he does.
04:47All right, so what are the keys to victory?
04:48And how would one contrast their old styles with their recent styles in the ring?
04:52And for that, we turn back to Bobby Ches.
04:54Well, the keys for Mike Tyson.
04:56There is no new style.
04:57Mike Tyson goes in, gets inside, digs to the body, lands with power to the head and body.
05:02No new Mike Tyson.
05:03Same old Mike Tyson.
05:04Maybe even better.
05:04For Bruce, though, we have a new revised Bruce Seldon.
05:07A tremendous jab.
05:08Maybe the most improved and best jab in the heavyweight division.
05:11And better defense, a good lateral movement, a great athlete.
05:14We're going to draw some things up here on the Telestrator and show you what both need to do to win this fight here today.
05:18Because Bruce Seldon does have a shot.
05:20Here you're going to see Mike Tyson first, hands up, even on the outside.
05:23But now what he does, he bends his legs when he comes in, arches his back.
05:26And you watch him.
05:27As he comes into his opponent, he's always down and underneath.
05:30You watch here.
05:30Look how low he is.
05:31Under Frank Bruno's shoulders.
05:33He'll land body shots first with his legs bent.
05:36Body shots around to the right.
05:37Left hook.
05:38He'll come up top.
05:38He mixes them up.
05:39And he'll keep unloading up and down, up and down with right hooks and left hooks
05:43until he's got his opponent on the retreat, as you'll see as we roll the tape.
05:47There's the right hand to the body and the hook up top.
05:50This is what Mike does so well.
05:51Get inside.
05:52Keep his opponent going back.
05:53Now watch the motion.
05:54Mike has always got his man going backwards, pushing him back.
05:58He can't hurt Mike when he's going back.
06:00Mike's always going forward aggressively.
06:02And now his defining punch is the uppercuts.
06:04They are his signature series, boy.
06:06He puts them on, and when they land, that's it.
06:08They're clean.
06:09It's over.
06:13That's the beginning of the end right there.
06:19There's the surgery without the anesthetic.
06:21He's in pain.
06:22Pure pain.
06:23Bad intentions.
06:24Mr. Tyson.
06:28Now let's watch what Bruce Seldon has to do.
06:30Bruce Seldon, even though this is Tony Tucker, he's got to block that jab because Mike's
06:33going to jab.
06:33He's got to pick it off with his right hand.
06:34He's got to stop it.
06:35He can't allow that jab to get in there.
06:37Just give me.
06:38So you'll watch Bruce Seldon.
06:39He'll do what he has to do.
06:40He'll pick that jab and fire his jab back.
06:42Now he's got to fire, not just with one, but with at least two.
06:45He's got to step forward in a forward motion.
06:48Close the gap.
06:49Step forward with that jab.
06:49Push his opponent back here, Tucker.
06:52But tonight it's going to be Mike Tyson.
06:54And then he follows with the right hand.
06:56But you know, it's not just this.
06:57He can't stay here.
06:58He can't stand in front of Mike Tyson.
07:00He's got to spin out to the side.
07:02Very simple.
07:03And get away.
07:04He's got to do this all day if he's going to be effective.
07:08All right, Bobby, thank you very much.
07:10Right now, before the ring walks, let's throw it over to Jim Gray.
07:13Jim.
07:14All right.
07:14Thank you very much, Steve.
07:15I am with a very interested bystander tonight, the former heavyweight champion of the world,
07:19Evander Holyfield.
07:20First of all, Evander, let's congratulate you.
07:21I know it was a big thrill and quite an honor for you to carry the torch a couple of weeks
07:25ago in Atlanta.
07:26Well, thank you.
07:27Very exciting.
07:27It was a big moment in my life that I really enjoyed.
07:31Let's look forward to this night right now.
07:33What do you think about Seldon and Tyson?
07:35Well, it's going to be a good fight.
07:35Both the guys have two different styles.
07:38You know, Tyson, aggressive fight, and Bruce is one of them type of fighters that like
07:44to move and pump the jab.
07:45So it should be interesting.
07:46Do you really believe that Seldon can give him a fight?
07:50Yeah, I feel that.
07:52I mean, you know, the whole thing is that it's the individual himself.
07:54I don't make a decision.
07:56What I think someone could do is they design a determination.
07:58I think he have the skills and he have the talent.
08:02It's just up to the man himself how bad he really wanted to be the champ.
08:06If you were Seldon tonight, what would be your strategy based on his style and what he
08:10can do?
08:10Well, no doubt.
08:12You know, he have to at some time fight to get respect.
08:16But the most important thing, he used the thing that he do well, his jab and move around
08:20and then boxing from different angles.
08:22Now, of course, there have been a lot of rumors that you will fight the winner of this, particularly
08:26if it is Tyson.
08:28So you now have a vested interest in this fight.
08:30You kind of got to then be pulling for Tyson, correct?
08:33Well, you know, I'm looking for the best man to win.
08:36And I kind of think that Tyson is more favored.
08:40And, you know, whatever happened, what happened, I'm just hoping to fight the winner.
08:44How much has Tyson been on your mind since that cancellation back in 1992?
08:48Well, you know, it's been back and forth.
08:50You know, Tyson is proving that he's one of the toughest guys in boxing.
08:55And the press has built him up to be the man to beat.
08:59And there's no doubt.
08:59I want to be the heavyweight champ of the world.
09:01So it's kind of there.
09:03And I'm just looking forward to it.
09:05Evander, your assessment of Mike Tyson since he has returned as compared to what he was
09:09before he left?
09:11Well, I think that's not a big difference.
09:13Tyson was knocking guys out before he left.
09:15And he's knocking guys out now that he's back.
09:18And I don't think it's a big difference.
09:20I think the big difference is when he fights somebody who actually is going to fight him
09:24back and going to be able to endure some of the punishment that he did shout and be
09:29able to give him a little bit.
09:30Now, a lot of fans very concerned about you, Evander.
09:32Of course, you had the stiff heart.
09:33You were forced to retire.
09:34Then you came back.
09:36You've shown yourself well.
09:37You had the three fights with Bo.
09:38And then you fought Bobby Chez until his eyes gave out.
09:41But there is a lot of concern about your health.
09:43Can you update us on how you're feeling and just exactly your medical condition if you
09:46were to fight Tyson?
09:47Well, you know, I'm in good shape.
09:49And just like I told people, you know, I was healed.
09:51You know, God has blessed me.
09:53And the only thing that I think going to take things off people's mind is when the fight
09:58when the fight happens means coming out victory.
10:01All right, Evander.
10:01We look forward to it.
10:02I'm sure you'll be watching with a lot of interest this evening.
10:05All right.
10:05Let's take it back over now to Steve Albert.
10:07OK, thank you very much, Jim.
10:12You get the feeling that Evander Holyfield will be sitting here taking notes during the
10:16Tyson-Seldon affair.
10:18The door has opened, and Mike Tyson is ready to make his entrance.
10:26Here he is, making his way to the ring first, just as he did in the last bout, March 16th.
10:32The crowd beginning to erupt, sensing his arrival.
10:39Technically, he is the challenger.
10:42There's the game face.
10:44No nonsense, all business attitude.
10:46His extreme focus and readiness for this, his fourth fight since being released from prison.
10:51Mike Tyson.
10:59His entourage, Ray Holloway and John Horn and Jay Bright and Stacey McKinley and so on and so forth.
11:05The body gets more rock solid, chiseled and impressive looking with each fight of weight.
11:17He claims he is so prepared and hungry that many feel he'll unleash an assault, the likes of which Bruce Seldon has seldom, if ever seen.
11:25He's still underneath, in the back of the building, has yet to make his way into the actual arena where the crowd can physically see him.
11:36They see him up on the big screen, but they don't see him in person yet.
11:39He then said, fine, let's go.
11:43He said, fine, let's go.
11:44Let's go.
11:45Let's go.
11:46We'll be like, let's go.
11:47Let's go.
11:47A combination.
11:49Connected like that.
11:50The doctrine.
11:51Steady.
11:51imagination.
11:52I'm a soldier.
11:55It's too late there.
11:56I'm taught the talking general.
11:57Let's go.
11:58Let's go.
11:58Let's go.
11:59Let's go.
12:00Come on.
12:00Let's go.
12:01Let's go.
12:01Let's go.
12:02Let's go.
12:02Let's go.
12:03Let's go.
12:04Let's go.
12:04Let's go.
12:05Let's go.
12:06Arlond think you're ready to touch.
12:07you can see the demeanor determined mike tyson the crowd can now see him
12:16very serious but yet not angry i would say the look the expression on the face of mike tyson
12:25as he makes his way through the ropes
12:27you hear the reaction from the crowd not overwhelming the reaction he's a 16-1 favorite

14:38You gotta keep a little time.
14:40That's why I'm with you, boy, and you feel it.
14:42You're too good, boy, and you do this in just a good way.
14:45The way my head is comin' through, you would think he's insane.

14:56Express, y'all.
14:57Better cut the train, time's in on your own.
15:00Ain't no turnin' back.
15:01And now the crowd can see him, and he looks, as you can see,
15:05very cool, very calm, and very relaxed.
15:08The complete opposite of Frank Bruno when he walked in.
15:17It's almost too relaxed.
15:22His manager, Rocco DiPersia, right there.

15:26We love it!

21:55I'm cautioning you again, obey my commands at all times.
22:00Anything below these belts, I will warn you twice, a third time, or take a point away.
22:08May my commands take hands, good luck.
22:14A very loose-looking Bruce Seldon, a very serious-looking Mike Tyson.
22:19Seldon, the anonymous champion, almost being overlooked in the excitement of the possibility
22:25of Tyson versus Holyfield soon, but he says that anonymous thing will change tonight.
22:32And here he is, the walking powerhouse, Mike Tyson, who says his objective simply is to
22:38throw punches at all times.
22:39Richard Steele set to bring them together.
22:41Here we go, round one, scheduled for 12.
22:44And Tyson comes right out, right into Bruce Seldon.
22:48Bruce has to use that jab, but already he got hit with a hook.
22:50He's got to step to it once in a while.
22:52A left hook by Mike Tyson already got to Bruce Seldon.
22:57Every once in a while, you got to step into the eye of the storm to get to Mike Tyson, okay?
23:02Bruce Seldon cannot click backwards, jab backwards, or punch going backwards, because it's not going
23:06to be effective enough to keep Mike off.
23:08And Mike Tyson eats up fighters that go fighting backwards, because he lunges forward, and that's
23:13where the power is for them.
23:15Tyson coming forward, swing and a miss with the right hook to 10.
23:19Now there's the left judge, not much sweat from Mike Tyson, he's not worked up perspiration.
23:26Seldon has, Seldon flicking that trademark left judge, again Tyson pouring in, and then
23:32Seldon decides to hold on.
23:34That looks familiar.
23:35So when Mike's down in a crouch, he's got to spring up.
23:37If Bruce comes down and then comes up into Mike, maybe he can be effective enough to hurt
23:41him, but not going backwards, not at this range.
23:44But Tyson is not bobbing and weaving in, not in that crouch that we were talking about.
23:49He's standing way outside.
23:50Look how he stands straight up up there.
23:51Now that's not...
23:52Oh, down goes Bruce Seldon!
23:55Come on!
23:56That was a punch high on the head.
23:57It was a punch high in the head, Bert.
23:58You're exactly right.
23:59Hand.
24:00And it was stunning.
24:04With about a minute 40 remaining in round one, Seldon goes down for the first time.
24:11He had a nice long rest there, but he has tough...
24:14Back comes Seldon, and Tyson with a left hook, and Seldon is down on his stomach.
24:20Steve, there are two unalterable choosing boxes.
24:22If you have a great chin, you don't have a great chin, you can't get one.
24:25You can't buy one or learn one.
24:26Oh, forget it, Bert.
24:27He's wobbly, and it's over!
24:28You can always punch, and that's it!
24:30It's over in the first round!
24:32One minute and nine seconds were left, and he was not going to weather the storm.
24:37If he came out, he'd have been flattened.
24:39I mean flattened.
24:41He had nothing left.
24:42No reflexes.
24:43Fight stopped.
24:44He stopped himself, really.
24:46I think his indication to the referee was no more.
24:52And now they embrace, as Tyson consoles Bruce Seldon.
24:56You know, I was talking with some people before, some guys that have sparred with Mike, and
25:00they said, Bobby, he hits that hard.
25:02And you know what?
25:03If you don't have a great chin, as I was just saying, you can't get one.
25:06And when you can punch, you can always punch.
25:08It's the last thing a fighter loses.
25:10Mike is the quintessential puncher's puncher.
25:12And Bruce Seldon does not have a great chin.
25:14It's been pretty well documented.
25:16Not necessarily a bad chin, but a little questionable.
25:18And when the chin meets that punch, guess which one loses?
25:21Well, would you categorize this as an embarrassment of the title fight?
25:25I mean, the guy just didn't even get started.
25:27He's out.
25:28He's starched by one right hand right high on the head, not even on the jaw.
25:32And the Knicks was a left hooker.
25:33You know, I would say he came and he tried, but I don't think he employed the right strategy.
25:38I said every once in a while you have to do certain things.
25:40But for Bruce Seldon to win with what Bruce Seldon has, and we're taking into consideration his deficits as well as his assets,
25:45he had to move, jab, move, combinations, and spin off, Mike.
25:48He didn't do that.
25:49He ran into a couple of shots, one high on the head and then the left hook flush in the face.
25:53But for me, I would think a fighter would have to have and possess a good chin, Ferdy, some power, and get inside, sit in the eye of the storm to combat it.
26:00You know, what I'm saying, Bobby, is in the last two fights, we saw two little kids that didn't have any business in with top fighters,
26:05and they gave it their all.
26:06Their heart was there.
26:07They fought.
26:08They laid it out.
26:09I never got the feeling that Seldon laid anything out here.
26:12He came in, like, getting away from the punch and then getting hit, went down.
26:16Well, the best thing that I can offer right now is that Seldon lasted longer than Peter McNeil.
26:21Oh, God.
26:22And that said, Peter who?
26:25Come on back.
26:26Gosh.
26:27Gosh, gosh.
26:28That is not what I would say a satisfactory heavyweight championship fight.
26:32For example reason, I don't think it was a one-fighter fight.
26:35It was Joe Louis in the first round.
26:37Bang!
26:38Over.
26:41The Seldon's corner strategy was very defensive.
26:43They were yelling, tie him up, move away.
26:45And that was before the first knockdown.
26:47We're going to take a look at the first knockdown.
26:48Mike's coming in, and he throws a couple of shots, and they don't land really clean, but you're going to see one of them.
26:53You're going to see one of them land on the top of his head as we're watching here.
26:58Mike always has his hands high, springing, trying to come down under.
27:02He hits him on the top of the head.
27:04He hits him just on top of, I mean, and the softest part of your head is the very top of your head.
27:10The crowd is reacting.
27:14It looked like at first that Steele was waving it off, and they didn't see a punch.
27:20He hits him.
27:21Yeah, you know what?
27:22Yeah, and the right, it looks like his head punch glanced off the top of his head.
27:28It looked like his elbow almost slammed into the head in the same place, but I think it was just the right hand.
27:33We'll look at it one more time.
27:35Watch the top of Bruce Seldon's head.
27:40All right, now Mike's coming in.
27:43He senses the kill.
27:45There's the left hook.
27:46Bruce goes back to the ropes and down.
27:48The crowd is booing.
27:49I hear him in the background.
27:50I'll tell you what, Boone Steve.
27:51They don't believe those were legitimate shots for heavyweight champions to be knocked out with,
27:55and I have to somewhat agree.
27:57I don't think, you know, Bruce represented a good quality heavyweight type chin there.
28:01I agree with you, especially the first knockdown.
28:04It was a glancing blow off the top of the head.
28:07If anything, he got hit by the elbow of Mike Tyson.
28:12And look at the legs of Sheldon here, wobbling and staggering.
28:16You know, this is what we talked about.
28:19Riddick Bowe said he wanted to offer Mike a challenge of beating his men at 40.
28:22Well, guess what?
28:23He did.
28:24Well, I think a lot of people, again, are going to feel a bit shortchanged here by what happened.
28:30Let's go to Jimmy Lennon for the official announcement.
28:33Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
28:35He's, ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of one minute 49 seconds of round number one.
28:46A referee in charge, Richard Steele, stops the contest.
28:49The winner by way of technical knockout is the WBC heavyweight champion and the new WBA heavyweight champion of the world, Iron Mike Tyson.
29:04I agree with the fans and their reaction.
29:07A very unpopular victory here from Mike Tyson.
29:12Of course, not Mike Tyson's fault.
29:14Bruce Sheldon going down in questionable fashion.
29:17More so the first time, of course, than the second time he went down.
29:23So this crowd very unhappy.
29:29We're set with the fight.
29:30Dr. Ferdinand Pacheco standing by in the ring.
29:32All right, Mike Tyson, one minute.
29:36Certainly one of your fastest, I think, outside of McNeely.
29:39All praise be to Allah.
29:41I bear witness there's only one God and Allah that God and Prophet Muhammad is the message of peace and blessings be.
29:46And custom auto, we've got two down, one to go.
29:50Now, we're looking at slow motion and we're going to show you the whole round as soon as we can see it.
29:56Here we go.
29:57And you can watch the right hand punch.
29:59It seems like an elbow hit him as well as a punch.
30:01Well, I'm just trying to basically set him up, put my jab out there.
30:08and set him up and try to cut him off.
30:10You see, I'm cutting him off pretty well though.
30:15Slipping punches.
30:17The jab never kept you off?
30:19No, but it was a penetrating jab.
30:20It was very hard.
30:21It hit me in the head a couple of times and I felt the power of it.
30:23And I was just trying to be elusive enough to move.
30:26I had pretty good anticipation.
30:28So I moved just enough time.
30:29The punch doesn't miss me by much.
30:31I just, by a tenth of a second, the punch goes over my head so I'll be in position to punch.
30:35And if you missed me from so far, I wouldn't be able to punch like right there.
30:40But I'm, I'm punching pretty hard these days.
30:42I punch harder than I did when I was younger.
30:44Are you satisfied?
30:45You're not, you're not crouching as much as you did when you were very young.
30:47You're crouching Bob and Weave.
30:48You're coming in pretty straight up here.
30:49But I'm looking.
30:50I'm crouching, but I'm, I'm a tested look.
30:52Now you are.
30:53Now you see the guys behind me being biased over here.
30:55You know what I mean?
30:56Let us handle our business.
30:57Go ahead.
30:58Go ahead.
30:59They love me.
31:00Yeah.
31:01And I'm just looking to set the punch up.
31:03Setting the punch up.
31:04And he's jabbing and moving pretty well.
31:05And I, I needed that in my life.
31:06I needed someone to move.
31:07Cause most fighters were fighting that way.
31:09But he was fighting as he was moving.
31:11He was going hard punches.
31:13Now did you think that punch was going to knock him down high in the head?
31:19It was a hard punch.
31:20It was a hard punch.
31:21Yeah.
31:22And I had, and I kind of hit it with my elbow as well.
31:23Yeah.
31:24It was a strange punch, but he did go down flat.
31:26I mean, he just plop.
31:27Now he got up.
31:28He wasn't in the greatest shape.
31:29He just, he just said you could just finish it.
31:32Oh, well, you know, that's my, my, my, um, M.O.
31:35Once I get the man hurt, everything's, his work is abandoned.
31:38That was just one left hook.
31:40Well, praise it all off, he got up and he's safe.
31:43Now watch what he does.
31:48Yeah, that silliness of, of the crowd is hollering fix.
31:54A guy gets hammered twice, almost under the canvas.
31:57They think it's a fix.
31:58Yeah, right.
31:59It's the same thing that happens anytime.
32:01Happened to Joe Lewis.
32:02Happened to anybody who knocks up people in one round.
32:04That's tough luck.
32:05They don't like it.
32:06That's the way that is.
32:07Listen, you're on your way to ring immortality.
32:09I know I said before the pressure you put on yourself is worse than anybody else.
32:13Cause you want to be an immortal.
32:15And I think you're on the way.
32:16Holyfield stands in your way.
32:18That's got to be a nice fight.
32:19I look forward to it.
32:20Praise be to Allah.
32:21I'm going to do well.
32:22And I don't think there'll be no problem.
32:24Holyfield's in for a lot of trouble.
32:25Thank you very much.
32:27It's always good.
32:28Now to Jim Gray.
32:29Thank you very much, Ferdy.
32:31I'm here with Bruce Seldon.
32:32Bruce, can you tell us what happened?
32:33Well, you know, I came in the fight.
32:36I'm in great shape.
32:37You know, like I said earlier, I wasn't intimidated by Mike Tyson at all.
32:40You know, you see, I came out to fight.
32:42I came out here to win.
32:43But, um...
32:44Well, there were those who would question that.
32:45This whole audience is hollering fix and so forth.
32:48It didn't look as though you were that badly hurt, Bruce.
32:50Well, I was hurt.
32:51You know, Mike Tyson, I didn't realize how hard the guy could hit and how fast he was.
32:56You know, and I trained with great guys.
32:58It got me in tremendous shape for this fight.
33:00But Mike Tyson is a very fast type of guy.
33:03You know, they've been saying how Mike Tyson, he's a destroyer.
33:07And, um...
33:09I'm a witness to that.
33:11You know what I'm saying?
33:12He's a very fast, very hard, powerful guy.
33:15You know, I know I've said throughout the press conference and all that
33:18that I wasn't going to be intimidated by him.
33:20I wasn't going to perform like his other opponents and whatnot.
33:24I didn't choke up.
33:25I didn't choke up.
33:26As you see, I did not choke up.
33:27But it was...
33:28You see him all right now.
33:29You were just knocked out just a few minutes ago, technical knockout.
33:31You see him all right now.
33:33He rattled me.
33:34He really did, you know.
33:35And I just couldn't see my vision.
33:38When he dropped me the second time, the first time he hit me, he just grazed me
33:41on the top of my head.
33:42But he had a little elbow that came behind it.
33:44And that's what kind of did me in for the first knockdown.
33:48And the second knockdown, he caught me so flesh on the chin that, um...
33:52It just, like, rattled my eyes and I couldn't see clearly.
33:55So, you know, there's nothing I can say.
33:57You know, I've worked very hard to get to this point.
34:00I've been a professional fighter for 10 years.
34:02I won the heavyweight title.
34:04I went up against the man who's considered the baddest man on the planet.
34:08I think that says a lot for my accomplishment.
34:11How do you feel right now, though, Bruce, all of these fans and the audience out there hollering
34:15fix, fix, fix?
34:16Well, I don't pay attention to what the audience say, but how...
34:19Well, there would be a concern if you took a dive.
34:21That would be the next question.
34:22Well, I mean, I'm definitely not going to take a dive.
34:24I was coming in, like I said, I won the heavyweight title, and I wanted to hold on to that crown.
34:28You know what I'm saying?
34:29I, you know, I treasured that crown.
34:31I still have the belt, but I don't have the title any longer.
34:33So, you know, that meant a lot to me, and it wasn't a fixed fight.
34:36You know, I didn't train 12 weeks.
34:39You know, I didn't train 12 weeks to come in here and take a dive.
34:43You know what I'm saying?
34:44I wasn't coming here to take a dive.
34:45Yet you're aware, and people will say that with a $5 million payday.
34:48Yeah, people will say that, you know, but also, you know, before tonight, I'm already a millionaire.
34:54So it's not the money that meant anything to me.
34:56You know, it's definitely not the money that meant anything to me.
34:58I'm already a millionaire.
35:00So, you know, I just...
35:01Bruce, how about not fighting in a year?
35:03Did that contribute to any of this, and should you have fought?
35:05Maybe.
35:06You know, I felt as though it didn't have anything to do with it.
35:08You know, but maybe it did have something to do with it.
35:11I feel very hurt.
35:12You know what I'm saying?
35:13I feel very bad.
35:14You know, I know that there's a lot of people out there that...
35:16We've seen Mike Tyson leave the ring continue.
35:18Yeah, you know, I know that there's a lot of people out there that were counting on me,
35:21and that were saying that I'm the best, and I was going to do this, and I was going to do that.
35:25And I let a lot of people down.
35:27But all I can say is, you know, I'm sorry.
35:29You know, I hope those people who were with me in the beginning and will still be with me now today,
35:35you know, and I'm sorry that I let a lot of people down.
35:39But I tried my best, and I hope that that's all people were asking of me was for me to get in there and try my best.
35:45I tried my best.
35:46Mike Tyson is a very great fighter, which everyone knows, and he caught me fast.
35:50Bruce, thank you for answering the question.
35:51You're welcome.
35:52All right, let's bring in Richie Steele.
35:53Richie, you have the difficult task in these things.
35:55It did not appear, at least to the naked eye and the unprofessional eye outside of the ring,
36:00that Bruce Seldon was in a lot of trouble and got hit that badly.
36:02Your thoughts?
36:03Well, the first time he went down, I went to wave it off, but I looked at him a second time,
36:09and he was not getting up.
36:11So, you know, I'm not a medical doctor.
36:13I can't tell just how bad a person is, really.
36:17As you look at the monitor, Richie, tell us what you're thinking here.
36:20First knockdown.
36:21Well, I thought he missed the punch.
36:23I went to wave it off, but I looked at Bruce again.
36:26You were waving it off, but it wasn't a knockdown?
36:28I was attempting to wave it off.
36:30I looked at him again, but the fighter seems dazed.
36:33He seemed hurt, so I had to pick up the count.
36:36Then it comes down to the next knockdown after you give him the count.
36:41Again, it didn't look as though it was that difficult of a blow, but the end of the fight, clearly he caught him.
36:46Yes, you know, I looked at the fighter.
36:50His eyes was in bad shape.
36:53His legs was very weak.
36:55Matter of fact, he stumbled back, and there was no way I could let him continue under those conditions.
37:00Again, it looked as though he caught him, but not that bad.
37:03Certainly we've seen much, much worse, Richie.
37:05Well, yes, I've seen a lot worse, but I'm not one that can tell just how hard Mike Tyson punched.
37:13I mean, when a guy of his magnitude, you know, hit a fighter, he hurts him.
37:20You know, who can tell just how much Seldon can take or how hard the punch was.
37:25We can't answer these things.
37:27So that's why the fight was stopped.
37:29Richie, thank you.
37:31All right, let's go back down to Steve Albert.
37:32All right, Jim.
37:33Rich Isila just can't seem to escape controversy.
37:35Tyson's third fastest knockout in title fights.
37:38The first one, 91 seconds against Michael Sphinx.
37:41The second fastest, 93 seconds against Carl the Truth Williams.
37:44And now 149 of round number one against Bruce Seldon.
37:48Bobby Chez, what do you have for us in terms of a highlight?
37:50Well, we're going to show you here is the pretty much the what winds up being the knockout punch is the left hook.
37:55Mike Tyson always doing what he does.
37:57And that's going in.
37:58He's going into forward motion.
37:59He's going.
38:00He's chasing.
38:01And he likes to bend his knees and spring up.
38:03And what you'll see he does as we roll the tape, he springs up with a big hook right here and he hits Seldon.
38:08But it's not even a big hook.
38:09I mean, that's a half a hook.
38:11Bruce goes back into the ropes.
38:13And I think I think it's partially a problem of this.
38:18When you have a bad chin, your heart can't be that brave to put your chin in harm's way.
38:23And I think Bruce decided he knew he couldn't win the fight.
38:26Why bother taking a beating all night?
38:27And enough done because I don't believe he was as hurt as that wobbling that stagger Lee he was doing later on.
38:33I'm sorry.
38:34Very similar to the Michael Sphinx situation back in 1988 when he went down 91 seconds into the fight.
38:40And I think the fans have a very legitimate gripe.
38:43Those who are displeased and screaming in the background that they feel that something was amiss, something awry.
38:5589 seconds for McNeely in the first round.
38:57Mathis Jr. lasted 2.32 into the third round.
39:01Bruno 50 seconds into the third and now in the fourth a minute 49 of round one.
39:05Jim Gray with Evander Holyfield.
39:08This should be interesting.
39:09All right.
39:10Thank you very much, Steve.
39:12What did you think of this?
39:13Clearly, as we were just talking here, it looked like one blow went over his head and then Selton went down.
39:18Well, you know, you know, when I was sitting there, it didn't look like a clean blow.
39:22You know, but the most important thing.
39:24It looked like a clean blow?
39:25It didn't.
39:26It didn't.
39:27You know, the most important thing is that, you know, Tyson won.
39:30And it looked like, you know, had the two best fight to fight against each other.
39:33Would you agree with the fans and what we all have seen here that this was bad?
39:37Well, you know, you know, you know, when the man come to fight, he come to fight.
39:41And the other man got to fight, too.
39:42Did he come to fight, Selton?
39:44Well, you know, I don't know what Selton came to do.
39:46Tyson came to fight.
39:47And you can't take that from the man who came to fight.
39:50So, you know, the crowd is not pleased and, you know, they have a right to, you know,
39:55they pay their hard money and they want to see a good fight.
39:58And, you know.
39:59They didn't get their money's worth tonight, did they?
40:00Well, you know, I, you know, you have to ask them.
40:03But, you know, I felt.
40:04But you'll give them their money's worth November 9th?
40:05Well, you know, I'm looking forward to, you know.
40:07Ain't nothing like two men want to win.
40:10You didn't learn much tonight, did you?
40:12You really can't tell much based on what we saw, can you?
40:15Well, it's not, it's not so much, you know, looking at one fight.
40:18You know, you know, I've been watching Mike for a long time.
40:21You know, I respect his boxing ability.
40:23I know what he brings to the table.
40:25But most important, you know, I bring a lot to the table, too.
40:28We look forward to it, Hawley.
40:30All right, let's go back to Steve Albert.
40:31All right, Jim, thank you very much.
40:33If you're keeping score at home, Bruce Seldon was in the ring 20 seconds longer than Peter McNeely.
40:40The fight doctor, Ferdy Pacheco, standing by with Don King.
40:43Well, a short night for Tyson, certainly 20 seconds longer than McNeely.
40:47Wasn't that kind of a bit of a surprise?
40:49Well, not really, because with Tyson, he's the quintessential fighter.
40:54And it's not longevity, it's quality.
40:57And this is what everyone pays to see.
40:59No matter what they say, the explosive depth of Tyson, his dedication, his commitment, his focus.
41:04When he goes into the ring, he goes in to destroy.
41:07He do not go in to make friends and influence people.
41:10Well, he's never done that.
41:12How about the Evander Holyfield fight?
41:14We just heard him right next to us here saying he thought he could put up a much better fight.
41:17I do, too.
41:18I think that's going to be a blazing good fight.
41:20I do, too.
41:21I think it's going to be a super sensational fight because Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson are like arch rivals, the same as Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.
41:30They don't particularly like each other.
41:32It was coming up in the same time and like sibling jealousy.
41:35It was always one or the other.
41:37And Mike Tyson didn't like that because he wanted to be the only man on the planet Earth that he looked at as the baddest man on planet Earth.
41:44And now he's got another opportunity to prove that and to vindicate that.
41:47On the other hand, Holyfield wants to do the same thing.
41:50My filters are right.
41:51You're telling me that this is officially an announcement.
41:54You are going to have this fight in November.
41:56It's going to be Holyfield versus Tyson.
41:59Am I right or am I wrong?
42:00You are right.
42:01There's going to be Holyfield versus Tyson.
42:03It's the one thing that they both don't like each other.
42:05They both feel that each one has been standing in their way.
42:08Holyfield is like a, believe it or not, Ripley.
42:11He's going to reach down real deep like a mother picking up a 4,000 pound car to save a baby.
42:16He says he can do it.
42:17He's going after Tyson with a vengeance.
42:19Tyson says he's waited all the four years.
42:21He's in the penitentiary.
42:22He says the only thing that hurt him the most is that he could knock out Holyfield first.
42:25So now you've got an opportunity with both of these guys going.
42:28You know, Dan, the first word that sprung to my mind.
42:31You and I have seen a lot of heavyweight championship fights was embarrassment here.
42:34That's kind of embarrassed for selling.
42:36What's your overview?
42:37What do you think of this as just a fight?
42:38You know, 10 years from now, we're looking at this fight.
42:40What do you think of it?
42:41I think it's a good fight.
42:42You got to understand when you face Tyson, you know, a guy gets in the ring, he gets through the ropes.
42:47It takes a lot of courage.
42:49It does.
42:50Everyone sitting on the ringside that ain't getting hit by those thunderous blows.
42:53They can make, they can, they can have repartee and rebander, pronosticate, predict, say what they would or would have didn't.
42:59But it ain't facing the man.
43:00I mean, and so this man is now a better fighter than he's ever been.
43:03As you can see, he's more committed.
43:05You know, he does not waste any energy now.
43:07He just goes about his biddy.
43:08The upper body movement is good.
43:09And he wreaks havoc on whoever he gets into the ring.
43:12And he wants to give the people one undisputed champion again.
43:16So what this other man did was he fought.
43:19I thought he fought a good fight.
43:20He was trying.
43:21He was throwing his jab out there.
43:22He was doing the best he could.
43:24And what many people say, it's easy for the critics to sit on the sidelines and say that if you would have did this, that and other, if you were there.
43:30But they're not in the thick of the battle.
43:32They're not in the center of the ring.
43:33So, I mean, you always find that, you know, the ups and downs.
43:36And that people are somewhat cruel because the man got hit with that left hook.
43:40The one that he went back down on his face, they can't say nothing but that left hook hit him on the jump.
43:45You know what I mean?
43:46I don't think there was any doubt about the stoppage of the fight either.
43:48I think Zeldin wanted it stopped as much as anybody else.
43:51And that was the end of that.
43:52But a sort of you wanted more, you know, one round isn't enough of seeing Tyson.
43:57You want to see him in a real combat.
43:59I think we're going to get that with Van Der Holyfield.
44:00I think it takes a whole lot of punching to get Van Der Holyfield.
44:03Well, I'm going to tell you something.
44:04You know, in a prize fight, it goes from one to twelve.
44:08You know, you can't fix a fight.
44:11You can't go out there and say you've got to fight so many rounds in order to fight.
44:14You go out there and you do what you can and what you do best.
44:16That's what Tyson's reputation is on.
44:18His whole career has been, the majority of them have been one round knockouts.
44:22He's a guy that goes out to the fight.
44:24When he lost to Buster Douglas, it shocked the world.
44:26You know what I mean?
44:27He shocked the world.
44:28But he came right on back and regrouped.
44:31And here we go again.
44:32Mike Tyson, an exciting fighter.
44:34You and I were on the alley circuits.
44:35Now we're on the train with Tyson through an adventure of heavyweight.
44:39So let's go back to Steve at ringside.
44:42All right, Ferdy, thank you very much.
44:44In controversial fashion, Mike Tyson, two thirds of the way to again unifying the heavyweight title.
44:51We'll be back with the final comments from ringside here right now.
44:54Let's go back up to Jim Hill.
44:59Well, thank you very much, Steve.
45:00Here's a recap of tonight's results from the ring in a six round women's bout between Christy Martin and Melinda Robinson.
45:06Christy Martin won by a knockout in the fourth round.
45:09IBF welterweight champion Felix Tito Trinidad retained his title against Ray Lovato by a sixth round technical knockout.
45:16The IBF and WBC 154 pound championships still belong to terrible Terry Norris, who won by a fifth round technical knockout over Alex Rios.
45:25And in our main event, Mike Tyson is now both the WBA and WBC heavyweight champion after defeating Bruce Selden by a knockout, a technical knockout in the very first round.
45:37Meanwhile, a special panel of judges comprised of members of the boxing media covering tonight's action voted on the fighter of the night award.
45:44And here is your panel. Ron Borges of the Boston Globe, Royce Fiore of the Las Vegas Review Journal and Chris Thorne of the Newark Star Ledger.
45:53And our judges have selected Mike Tyson.
45:57Mike Tyson. So congratulations to Mike Tyson for being chosen as the fighter of the night.
46:02And a $5,000 donation will be named will be made in the name of Mike Tyson to each of these organizations.
46:08The United Negro College Fund, the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the University of Nevada Las Vegas by Showtime Networks and Don King Productions.
46:17And so as fight fans continue to leave the MGM Grand Garden after this night of boxing, let's return one last time to the ringside.
46:27Steve Albert. Steve.
46:28All right. Thanks again, Jim.
46:30Steve Albert along with the fight doctor Ferdi Pacheco and Bobby Chez as we wrap things up from ringside.
46:35Let's get your final thoughts.
46:37Obviously, this was a gross mismatch, Tyson and Selton.
46:41What have we learned about Mike Tyson in a minute 49?
46:44You learn not to take him for granted. He is here at full force, at hurricane force.
46:48As we said in the program, his obligation is to himself and his reputation.
46:52So I think that when you get in with a guy that you can only say charitably is scared.
46:58I mean, just like Frank Bruno didn't do anything, this guy didn't do anything.
47:02Whereas with McNeely, the audience expected him to go. This audience expected to see a fight, hence the boos and the yelling of fix and so forth.
47:10They wanted to see a fight. I thought the word that we came up with, embarrassment, was what it was.
47:15Well, that's the key. I mean, Selton showed no resistance whatsoever.
47:19He showed no resistance. He showed too much respect. And he did, unfortunately, show too much fear.
47:24I know Bruce personally. I like Bruce. I like Rocco Diego. I like him as a group.
47:27But he made Frank Bruno look like Godzilla. And it just wasn't a good offensive minded fight at all.
47:34He did not stand. He did not take his stance and get his pound of flesh at all.
47:38And he didn't get any respect in that regard. And I don't think his fights helped his reputation.
47:42Certainly a few million extra in the bank, which is one of the priorities, I'm sure.
47:46This was not a fight. This was an execution. There's no question about that.
47:49How about Holyfield? Your comments on Holyfield November the 9th?
47:53I have the world of admiration for Holyfield. A heart as big as this building.
47:58I think he has the ability to hold off and do a good fight with Tyson.
48:04Whether he can win or not, I don't know. The problem that rings the bell with me is the doctor's heart.
48:09So far, he's been cleared by Mayo. He's been cleared by everybody. That's good enough for me.
48:12Unless I got to examine him, I couldn't say anything different.
48:14So as far as I'm concerned, I take Mayo Brothers' word for it.
48:17They wouldn't let him fight if there was anything wrong with him, believe me.
48:20Well, a lot of folks still feel it's risky business because of the heart problems with regard to Holyfield.
48:26A man who obviously knows a lot about Evander Holyfield, Bobby Chez.
48:29Well, Evander and I were all but intimate for five rounds, so I do know him very well.
48:33And I know a few things. Way back when, 1991, they were supposed to fight November the 8th.
48:37I was on my honeymoon, rearranged my honeymoon schedule to come in for that fight.
48:40Unfortunately, it didn't happen. And back at that time, I thought Mike Tyson's six.
48:44Now I think it's a much lesser. I think it's more like four or three.
48:47Evander hit me with everything he had. He couldn't hurt me. How is he going to hurt Mike Tyson?
48:51I just, I believe Evander's a much better boxer. I believe he'll do some of the right things.
48:55And he has a tremendous heart. And in that sense, I mean, a warrior's heart.
48:58He wants to fight. He'll come to fight. He'll come to win, as you heard from his own lips.
49:02And that will cause him to get hurt very badly.
49:04A lot of people thought it was a lackluster effort by Evander Holyfield.
49:07You will obviously not agree with that. You felt his punches.
49:11Well, I felt his punches, and he did everything he could to try and get me out of there in the first round.
49:14He threw 87 punches in the first round, trying to take my head off.
49:16And that dwindled down to 43 in the fourth and fifth round, where he was only able to throw half.
49:20Maybe he underestimated how tough and durable I was.
49:22But he's hit some of the biggest and the best, like Bowe, like Mercer, like Moore.
49:26And he had them on the floor. Cooper and Douglas he knocked out.
49:28But he couldn't get me near the floor. I think he's fading. I think he's past his prime.
49:31I think even he'll agree that he's beyond his better days as a puncher in the heavyweight division.
49:37Never a true heavyweight, a manufactured one.
49:39But nonetheless, when you're facing this man, that opportunity for greatness, if I were Evander, I wouldn't walk away.
49:44If I were me, I wouldn't walk away. If I were you, I might walk away.
49:46Okay. All right. Good point.
49:48Well, crazy night here at the MGM Grand.
49:52And we want to remind you one last time that another big one coming up November the 9th,
49:58it will be officially now Mike Tyson versus Evander Holyfield live on pay-per-view,
50:05the World Heavyweight Championship, November the 9th, 1996.
50:09I'm not sure what we learned about Mike Tyson in a minute 49 tonight.
50:13A lot of fans are riled up here in Las Vegas.
50:15Thanks for joining us. Let's go back up to Jim Hill.
50:19All right, Steve, thank you so very much. And thank you for joining us tonight.
50:26You know, this evening we witnessed a very quick and unpopular fight for the WBA Heavyweight Championship.
50:32And as one fan just told me a little while ago as he walked out the arena, he says,
50:36if you talk the talk, you got to walk the walk.
50:39And this fan also says tonight, Bruce Seldon didn't walk.
50:42Bruce Seldon crawled into and out of the arena.
50:45But for now, the championship belt belongs to Mike Tyson.
50:48And hopefully this title and the other championship will be decided in the ring.
50:52And so for all of us here at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, at the MGM Grand Hotel Casino and Theme Park,
50:57this is Jim Hill saying goodbye from Las Vegas.
