00:00I guess you can keep them still sealed if you're looking to keep Connor a collectible.
00:04But here's your look at the McFarland Toys, DC Direct, Page Punchers, Superboy.
00:28Some heroes are made, not born.
00:29A combination of Superman and Lex Luthor's DNA, Superboy was an outsider from his inception.
00:35Raised in a lab and aged to maturity in a public spotlight, Superboy went from a younger teenager with an attitude to a more mature veteran of the superhero team Young Justice.
00:44Kind of rather ironic that Connor is a clone because he's boring the body of Lightning Lad.
00:48In fact, actually, the body's been used a couple of times.
00:50And that's not a bad thing at all if it means we finally get ourselves a classic look of Superboy.
00:55We have, in fact, gotten a Superboy before, and it's always really been the stand-in for my shelf, always really waiting and hoping that Todd would eventually release this one here.
01:05We're going to kind of talk about all the things that come in clear with a figure, like his display stand, like the fact he comes in clear with a comic.
01:09But, you know, let's just back it up a bit first, and let's take the tape measure.
01:14Yes, Superboy from The Death of Superman and Page Punchers is going to stand at 7 inches in height, or roughly 17 and a half centimeters tall.
01:22It's so funny I make mention of boring bodies, and stand-in Supermans certainly do that.
01:27With the examples I present in front of you here on the left, trying to get him a stand, there's the Eradicator Superman.
01:32Well, obviously, you could look at this figure and know it's just a re-release of the original Eradicator.
01:37Both Cyborg and Eradicator are, in fact, actually using the Hush Superman body.
01:42In fact, though, in the review of the Cyborg Superman, I had made the mistake of calling him actually using the same mold as the classic Superman.
01:48A ref really should have come in, made the mark of the X, and stopped the review right away.
01:53No, he's actually using the Hush Superman body. We've actually, I think, gotten a new Superman Hush.
01:57I have really no interest to buy that body again.
02:00We did also get ourselves, this is the one I was using for my stand-in as a Superboy for a while on my shelf.
02:05I mean, it's an okay Superboy. It really did really want to get a classic-looking Superboy, and I'm glad to say we finally have one now.
02:12Now, the drawback, though, of that is, while we are getting a slightly more younger version of Superboy, doesn't have the stubble on his face.
02:19The thing he also doesn't have on his body, either, is his leather jacket.
02:22Yeah, missing his leather jacket is already a strike for Superboy, but perhaps the figure may redeem himself with all the other things that he has.
02:29First, that he gets himself a brand new display stand.
02:32Not new in the sense that it's a circular display stand, or that in walking distance, there's a peg that can plug into either one of his heels,
02:39but that now they are using a new DC logo.
02:43The thing about it, though, is I'm not really sure which way it's supposed to be facing.
02:47Generally, though, I tend to have my pegs.
02:49So, if you're looking at this, my figure, I would, well, okay, what's the best example I can use?
02:54Here we have, for example, the original DC logo stand.
02:57See how the peg is kind of in a corner to that, so the DC logo is always facing forward.
03:02So, if you put your figure down on this, for example, and I'm just using the example of my fingers right now,
03:07you start looking at it this way, and you still have the DC logo front and center facing, I feel, the right way.
03:13The thing they've done now about this, though, is they've changed the configuration of the display stand,
03:18or the way that you're going to display the figure on your shelf.
03:21You're not likely to display it this way.
03:22Why are we spending so much time talking about a display stand? Stay with me.
03:25You're not likely to put the figure around this way, because obviously the logo is facing the wrong way.
03:30You can't put it really, well, you can't put it this way, because the DC logo is facing the wrong direction.
03:35The way they tell you, based on the way they've printed it, is that in all, for all intents and purposes,
03:40you really should have the figure this way.
03:42So, you would take yourself, of course, the Superboy and display it that way.
03:45I don't think it's necessarily a wrong idea.
03:47I would rather have had, though, the DC logo sort of, again, more in the middle.
03:52But again, based at least on that, it's supposed to be on the side.
03:55It looks very much like the James Gunn kind of DC logo we're getting now.
03:59I guess it's really just DC Comics moving forward with the way that they have it.
04:02I love this look of the logo.
04:04For a while, I don't know why we had to kind of go and modernize things.
04:08It's kind of really hard to make this out, but this is like the DC logo we've had for so long.
04:12Going back, I feel just to the basics of what the DC logo should have really been right from day one.
04:17I know, again, we're just spending a whole lot of time talking about this.
04:19I'm going to spend more time.
04:20We're just going to move it off to the side.
04:22The figure does also come in clear with a trading card, which, speaking of the side,
04:25I don't know why I had it over there.
04:27He does have a very classic Superboy card.
04:30Because it's also a Page Punchers and a DC Direct, it's also bordered in black instead of white.
04:35You've got the red font of Superboy down below, but a classic look of the character.
04:39That same look of the figure's face, by the way, is on the back.
04:41His real name is Con-El.
04:44His debut is The Adventures of Superman, Volume 1, 500, June 1993.
04:50I'm having a real hard time.
04:51Oh, I just wipe away my eyes.
04:53My virtual eyes.
04:54It's basically just a camera.
04:56But I feel like I'm getting a little older when I can't make out the font.
05:00I'm the only one.
05:01It's a lot certainly easier to look through it at the camera.
05:03There's also a paragraph read right here that you can read for yourself.
05:07It's a nice looking card, but again, it's only just serving as a reminder, more of a reminder, that I feel the figure should have had a jacket.
05:15Let's put that off to the side.
05:17The figure, speaking though of Action Comics, or speaking of Superboy, we have Superman or Superboy number one.
05:23Now, this does have Reign of Tomorrow on the side.
05:26I don't think you've really confused this with the original Superboy comic that we got.
05:29Because essentially, it would have had the Reign of Superman each coming forward and feeling like they are the true Man of Steel.
05:36And then from that, they would have broken off and had their own subsequent issues.
05:40I still have the original issue of Superboy sitting somewhere.
05:43It's one of the few things that I still kept from my childhood.
05:47The Reign of Superman, Death of Superman, obviously, and the Breaking of the Bat with Nightfall still have those comics.
05:52If we were to flip through this, the only thing that's also a big giveaway that this is clearly not the original classic comic
05:58is that we have an advertisement, obviously, inside for McFarlane toys.
06:01Batman doing the Bat-toosie?
06:03Ouch!
06:04Oh!
06:05Ah!
06:05And then we jump right away to the pages of what would be the comic if you were collecting this from the late 90s.
06:11I guess it would be the early 90s.
06:13Just love the artwork, the art styling in this.
06:16And then on the back of that, a big advertisement, again, for McFarlane toys.
06:19So, again, I don't think you'd ever really be buying this on eBay.
06:22Try not to sell this to somebody with the idea that this is the original comic.
06:25First of all, I don't think you'd get much for it.
06:27I think this original comic would probably...
06:29Is it worth maybe like $6 to $8?
06:31Some big comic expert right now is, I'm sure, typing down below in the comments section,
06:36just so you know, sir, can I call you sir?
06:39It's currently going for $16.45.
06:42Mic drop.
06:43Let's just leave the room and grab my milk in the kitchen.
06:46Let's move this comic, though, off to the side.
06:48Superboy, though, does also come in clear with a couple of swappable hands.
06:52Now, some of these hands I don't think were carried over from...
06:55I don't think Lightning Land had either one of these hands.
06:59Lightning Land basically starts with a hand that he has now.
07:01Connor Kent, or Jonathan Kent, also did have that version of Superman.
07:06Also, he basically used this exact same body.
07:08But you get yourself some hands, a thumbs up hand, and a gestured hand if you want to
07:12use those instead.
07:13Basically, just take the hand that he has, just pop it easily off the peg.
07:16If you're also wondering, the cuff of the glove, is that something that's going to fall off?
07:20It falls off only if you pull it.
07:24So don't pull it.
07:26Let's take ourselves the thumb.
07:27We'll just put that in place.
07:29I find these hands are really easy to change.
07:31Pop off the other hand.
07:33Again, we don't feel the need to pull the cuff off.
07:35And just pop that also in place.
07:37Now, I have not yet done this.
07:39I'm sure if you've already seen the fact that I already brought it into this original Superman,
07:44which is Superboy, which, I mean, isn't using it all the exact same body.
07:48No, no.
07:48I mean, maybe different, same thighs?
07:51Maybe the same thighs?
07:52Clearly, though, different lower legs.
07:54If you were wondering, though, could you swap the head out for this guy and pop it over here?
07:58That way you'd get yourself the jacket.
08:00I'll be honest with you guys.
08:01I haven't even tried it.
08:03You probably could try it if you want to, but I haven't honestly tried it.
08:05Well, you mean you didn't try it?
08:07You're a toy reviewer.
08:08You're a figure reviewer.
08:10Shouldn't you be trying all these things before you let the camera hit record?
08:13No.
08:13Cameras don't hit record, by the way.
08:15I have to hit it manually.
08:16And I haven't yet tried it.
08:18I would think, though, that they're probably going to be using a different peg.
08:21I mean, maybe that's just me.
08:23Also, clearly, though, the coloring of the skin for the neck would be different between the two.
08:27I'm sure, though, realistically, if you wanted to make it work, you could really make anything work.
08:31I mean, you'd either have to saw down or shave down the peg joint for the neck, or you'd even have to add a little bit of additional, like, putting material.
08:39You could make it work.
08:40I'm sure you could easily make it work.
08:42You could customize this figure for yourself.
08:44Or, really, you could just wait it a while.
08:47And I'm sure we're probably going to be getting ourselves another release of this Superboy.
08:50I'm calling it now, if we get ourselves one that has the jacket and has perhaps even removable glasses, I feel like that already would be a better Superboy than we're getting here.
08:59I don't think it's necessarily a bad figure, but right away, Strikes have to kind of be taken away for the fact that he doesn't have a jacket.
09:06When I think of Superboy, I think right away that the figure has it.
09:08And you can't even really say, well, no other Superboy has had it so far from McFarlane Toys when we already have this as the example.
09:16Despite lacking the jacket, though, I think it's a pretty good-looking head sculpt.
09:20Giving him just a bit more of a smile, I think, could have gone really a long way.
09:24But I do like that they've shaved the sides of his hair the way he looks from the original classic comic.
09:29It's not a bad-looking Superboy.
09:30He's got a little earring there on the side as well.
09:32This hair, by the way, is just printed.
09:34If you think it's been sculpted into the plastic, think wrong.
09:37You're thinking wrong, my friend.
09:39This looks like it's just been printed onto the plastic.
09:42But the face looks pretty, generally pretty good.
09:44It just really is missing the glasses, which I think glasses you could easily have just had as a separate accessory piece.
09:49Just take them off when you don't want them on there.
09:51Just put them back on.
09:52At the time, also, I was really trying to look for the Mattel DC Universe version of Superboy.
09:57Because I know I have him somewhere.
09:59Couldn't find him.
10:00He had glasses.
10:01He had also a jacket.
10:02So that figure does that figure better.
10:05Again, I do think that this is a good use of the Lightning Lad body or John Kent Superboy, which I actually just found that John Kent Superman, again, going to Walmart.
10:15They can't seem to sell that figure.
10:16He just continues to just flood the shelves.
10:19I say flood.
10:20There was probably only about four of them on the shelf.
10:23But one thing that they have, though, added to that new figure, or the original body for this new figure, is clearly they've added also cuffs for the gloves.
10:29And they've also added a belt piece.
10:31This belt is a separate piece.
10:33So that's something that they would have had to put in place.
10:35This emblem, by the way, is just printed on there.
10:38It's not sculpted onto the torso's plastic.
10:42But again, it's just basically using the Lightning Lad body.
10:45Right down to the fact that the boots are identical.
10:47Legs, I think, are nice and lean.
10:49They really should be thin like this.
10:50You really wouldn't want a super muscular Superboy.
10:53I think it's a good use for the mold.
10:55It just needs to do just a few extra steps.
10:58That's all it really needed.
10:59Just a few extra walking steps before we would have landed on a better Superboy.
11:04Just really by adding the jacket and by adding the glasses, I think we would have gotten this figure looking a whole lot nicer.
11:10In the way we've got him for the basics of him, I think he's not bad.
11:14I don't think he's bad at all.
11:16Now, for the figure's articulation, Superboy, if you're already familiar with that mold, or really, for that matter, any of the DC Multiverse figures,
11:22they'll have standard levels of pose ability.
11:24For Superboy, for example, his head's going to rotate all the way around.
11:27Head's going to look up and down, up, down.
11:30I feel like I need to keep doing that.
11:31Rocking back and forth.
11:33Yes, it does.
11:33The upper torso is going to be on a ball joint.
11:35The lower abdomen is also on a ball joint.
11:38The one problem, unfortunately, though, of using this, I don't want to say this mold,
11:42but every once in a while, you'll get this with one of the Todd's figures.
11:45When you are moving the torso about, you'll notice that it leaves this very unsightly gap
11:50for the top where his abdomen stops, and the top of his torso, his lower torso begins.
11:56You have to kind of keep correcting this.
11:57And one thing that's also helpful is you can just kind of sort of take the belt and put it over top.
12:03But do, when you are moving it, though, you are going to notice it's going to start to make a gap space.
12:08It's a bit of a shame.
12:09As for his arms, though, no shame at all.
12:11They do rotate all the way around.
12:13He can pull out successfully a T-pose or 90-degree angle bend.
12:17And the figure does have swivels in his arms, his biceps, double hinge on the elbow,
12:22and the hands rotate all the way around.
12:25Do be careful, though, when it comes to rotating his hands.
12:28Not that they pop off, but if they do happen to pop off,
12:31the thing that will happen next is that the cuff will also pop off.
12:34So you want to make sure that it is all the way on there.
12:37Legs do split out.
12:38Yes, they do.
12:39Nice ratcheted joints that you can see working behind the scenes.
12:41Why do we always have to get so really awkwardly close to the crotch of these figures?
12:45But you can see there's the ratcheted joint.
12:47Legs go, in fact, forward and back.
12:50One thing I will also say, too, is the color match isn't really quite there.
12:55I mean, you can see kind of the coloring for the legs.
12:57Everything from the legs lower is a brighter plastic than what they've used for the tops of the trunks.
13:03Being that they had to have molded both and not painted them,
13:06my guess is reasoning why this looks a little more faded is just because it's a softer plastic.
13:11I should probably be pressing so hard around this area.
13:14Yeah, the figure does have a double hinge in his knee.
13:16No articulation at all for his boots.
13:19His ankles, however, move up and down.
13:21They also rock back and forth.
13:22And yeah, Superboy does also have toe articulation as well.
13:25Good Superboy.
13:26He seems to think so.
13:27He's giving already a thumbs up.
13:29I would say not necessarily a thumbs up.
13:32I would not say thumbs up or I would say thumbs down.
13:35I'm sort of sitting somewhere in the middle.
13:37What we do have, though, is a more classic look at Superboy.
13:40Anyway, so if you are one that grew up, for example, with the reign of Superman, or even
13:44a few pages back from that, the death of Superman, this would probably be one figure you'd like
13:48to have on your shelf.
13:49You may have done what I have done, where I'd had this sort of be my stand-in Superboy
13:53with the hope, fingers crossed, pleading, pleading, that we would eventually get ourselves
13:58a new, I don't want to say a newer figure, but an older look to Superboy.
14:02One that certainly would work a little bit better with now the new release we got of Cyborg
14:06Superman.
14:07Again, I know there's also the Eradicator.
14:09I do really think that Eradicator needed to be a whole lot better.
14:12What would, in my personal opinion, make this figure a whole lot better?
14:16Just adding the jacket, adding maybe perhaps removable glasses so that if you want to have
14:20the glass a little higher up, or if you want to don Johnson it and bring it down a little
14:23bit so he's kind of looking off to the camera.
14:26Jacket, I think, certainly would be one thing.
14:28I would love to see the figure.
14:29And being that they already kind of, I don't want to say tease it because obviously they're
14:32just using an illustration, a source material photo of Superboy, perhaps that may be a tease
14:37that we may get ourselves at Page Puncher's, or there'd be a Page Puncher's Red Platinum
14:42Edition Superboy.
14:43If there is one, it's unfortunate that this guy has to come first and not just be the definitive
14:49Superboy in the first place.
14:50One that mimics the appearance that he has on the front of that comic.
14:53One, obviously, that looks the way he does on the front of the card.
14:56I just think that this is a Superboy that will kind of be, again, a stand-in for the
15:01eventual better release, I hope we're going to be getting, where he does have the Jackie
15:04and perhaps even removable glasses.
15:07And then we would have a definitive Superboy looking at that DC logo and it's throwing me
15:11off.
15:11I think what's really throwing me off too is that where they've also placed it means
15:15that the peg is closer to the front.
15:17Because if you look at a regular DC logo, now everybody just grabbed the logo that they
15:20have right now, see that the logo is now in the front and the peg is further to the
15:25back corner.
15:27So when you put your figure down on that, they're kind of standing sort of centered to
15:32the base.
15:33With the DC logo now further to the front and the peg being sort of parallel to that, the
15:38figure always kind of feels like they're standing on the edge of the logo.
15:41And I know really when it comes to the stands, they're really only needing to serve one purpose,
15:46one purpose, and that's to have a figure standing upright so it doesn't fall over.
15:50Just yet though, where they've placed the DC is playing mind games with me.
15:55Playing mind games also with me too is looking at Superboy like this and just feeling that
16:00the figure is lacking something just because he doesn't have a jacket.
16:04I know that he has appeared in the comics without the jacket, so the existence of this
16:09Superboy is there.
16:10But yet though, just growing up with the comic and the way that Superboy looked at the time
16:14of the reign of Superman, I really feel like this figure needed to have one out the gate.
16:19It's not to say that maybe not immediately out the gate, but maybe a few months from now
16:23we might even get a Red Platinum Edition, Page Punchers, or DC Direct, how they're going
16:27to name it, I don't really know.
16:29I'm sure though there's going to be a variant of this figure being released that's going
16:32to have the jacket and it's going to have the glasses.
16:34I'm asking though, aloud, could we not have just gotten that figure in the first place?
16:39I said it.
16:40For those that probably would have preferred not to have the jacket, at least your expectations
16:45are that you're getting now yourself a Superboy.
16:47It's using, yeah, the Lightning Lad body.
16:49And that's not a bad thing at all.
16:50It makes for a better looking Superboy, but is it a better looking Superboy without the
16:54jacket?
16:55I'm going to pose that to you.
16:56What do you guys think of Superboy?
16:57Let me know down below in the comment section.
16:59Do you feel like the figure needs to have the jacket and the glasses, or do you like the
17:03way that he's looking without them both?
17:05If you guys also enjoyed this video, I certainly hope that you did, by the way, make sure you
17:08hit it with a like.
17:09You guys want to stick around for more?
17:10So, dot, I hope so.
17:12Hit the subscribe, yep, turn on the bell, get the reminders going for YouTube.
17:16But the most important thing is that you're also coming back.
17:18If you need a fix for all the things I've done in the past for DC Multiverse, McFarlane
17:22Toys, and just in general, popping up also at the very end will be Playlist.
17:26Feel free to give those a watch.
17:28They should be at your adjacent corners.
17:30Not just yet, not just yet.
17:31Basically, when we fade to black and it cuts to my outro, where the logo gets all electrified.
17:37All those Playlists will be popping up there.
17:38Feel free to give those a watch if you have a little bit of time on your hands.
17:42As always, guys, thanks for watching.
17:43See you guys next time.
17:48We'll see you next time.
