In a surprising twist.. CEPEP.. is now taking legal action.. against a contractor who had initially threatened to sue the company.. over a terminated contract. The contractor suddenly with drews. Now, Cepep wants to recover expended costs. Rynessa Cutting has the details.
00:00After threatening legal action against the CPEP Company Limited, one contractor may have to pay CPEP's legal costs after withdrawing the challenge.
00:10According to Freedom Law Chambers, which is headed by Senior Counsel Anand Ram Logan, lawyers acting on behalf of the contractor served an urgent application for an injunction against CPEP on July 3rd,
00:24only to withdraw the pre-action after Freedom Law Chambers was already retained and had already responded to the action.
00:31Freedom Law Chambers says its client is not surprised by the decision to withdraw the claim because it was, quote,
00:37clearly filed with ulterior political motives in mind and lacked legal merit.
00:44Their correspondence goes on to state, quote,
00:46The PNM, having presided over the dismissal and termination of thousands of workers during its time in government from 2015 to 2025,
00:56knew or ought to have known that there is no lawful justification for bringing such a claim.
01:02The law firm is now seeking to recover legal costs incurred in the case on behalf of CPEP.
01:07The law chambers further notes that the contract has benefited over $7 million over the course of seven years
01:15and claims there have been several flagrant breaches of the laws.
01:19Freedom Law Chambers says it intends to draw this to the attention of the relevant authorities
01:24to determine whether criminal charges and prosecution should ensue.
