00:00Hello and welcome to Manchester World. My name is Theo Hewson-Betz and this is your transport update for the week.
00:05Now there are a few good stories that we want to cover today, so we welcome Dilly Dally.
00:09We're going to start with some news that came out late last week, which shows that Manchester's drivers are paying the third most fines for yellow box junction infractions in the whole of England and Wales.
00:18Now while London and Cardiff have been enforcing the rule that cars can't stop in yellow boxes for right turns for a while,
00:2410 other local authorities, including Manchester, started fining people for it in May 2022.
00:30There are 36 yellow boxes across those local authorities, and Manchester has six of them, and yet has brought in 49% of all revenue from fines, giving out 13,130 penalty charge notices last year.
00:42Moving on to trains now, and the country's Department of Transport has committed to eliminating the mobile signal black spots that exist on many of the major train routes across England and Wales.
00:51Government-owned Network Rail have signed up an agreement with NEOS Networks and Freshwave, which will see ultra-fast optic cable installed along various of the country's major routes,
01:00as well as attacking black spots that exist in many of the tunnels along the rail network.
01:04Mobile operators will also invest in new 4G and 5G infrastructure at a few train stations across the country, with Manchester Piccadilly singled out as one that will get us some attention.
01:12Finally, Transport for Greater Manchester have warned that they'll be cracking down harder on dangerous behaviour after Greater Manchester's Police Transport Unit arrested eight youths who were riding on the coupling units between trams in late June.
01:25Between January and May, there were 108 reported incidents of people doing that, as well as clinging on to the back of buses, and with any luck, this crackdown will keep people safe and prevent any injuries or casualties.
01:36That's all for this week, though. Thank you very much for watching. Follow Manchester World for more, and we hope to see you again soon.
