00:00What is the difference between Sadaqah and Zakat?

00:05By definition, Zakat means to purify, to increase.

00:11It means goodness, it means blessing.

00:13And Sadaqah comes from the root word Siddh, which means sincerity.

00:18So it is the sincerity and faith of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

00:22Zakat by definition according to Islamic Sharia is an obligatory charity

00:28which every Muslim who owns more than the Nisab level or surplus wealth

00:33if he has it with him for a year's period

00:37he has to give 2.5% on it every year.

00:41As far as Sadaqah is concerned, it is an optional charity.

00:46Zakat is also worship of Allah, obeying the commandment of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

00:49Sadaqah is also worship of Allah, it's obeying Allah, but it is voluntary.

00:52The major difference between Zakat and Sadaqah is

00:56that there are certain conditions required.

01:01For Zakat, number one, it is given on certain goods.

01:08For example, gold, silver, ornaments containing gold or silver,

01:13merchandise, it can be business activities, farm produce, cattle and all the categories.

01:20Whereas Sadaqah, you don't have to possess any wealth that you have to give Sadaqah.

01:23That can be just given to Sadaqah.

01:25Point number two, in Zakat, these properties and surplus wealth should be with you for one full year.

01:32Then you have to give Zakat.

01:34Sadaqah, there is no necessity of any particular wealth being with you for such and such a period.

01:40You can just give it without any time period.

01:44Point number three, you should have a nisab level of these wealth.

01:49Only when you achieve nisab level.

01:52For example, if you have gold weighing 85 grams, then you have to give Zakat.

01:56Or silver, 595 grams.

01:59If it is less than that, no Zakat is there.

02:00Sadaqah, irrespective of the property, you have less, more, irrespective, you can give voluntary.

02:05The other difference is, Zakat can only be given to the eight categories who are permitted to receive Zakat in the Quran.

02:14Surah Tawbah, chapter number nine, verse number 60, the poor people, the needy, etc. which we discussed earlier.

02:19Sadaqah, it can be given to anyone.

02:22It can be given to the categories of Zakat.

02:24It can be given to the categories outside of Zakat.

02:26There is no limitation, no binding whatsoever.

02:28Point number five, if a person who is liable to pay Zakat and does not pay Zakat and he dies,

02:38then his children, his heir, have to see to it that the Zakat is paid off.

02:44If it is from his property before distributing the wealth, it should be paid off.

02:47That's a liability, which is not the case of Sadaqah.

02:50A person who intends to do Zakat and he dies, his heir, need not fulfill that.

02:55It is his own intention.

02:56If they want, they can, it's optional.

02:59Number six, if you don't give Zakat, which is the pillow of Islam, obligation, its compulsory,

03:04you'll be punished for that.

03:05As Allah says in Surah Tawbah, chapter nine, verse number 34, 35,

03:09you'll be branded with the fire from health, with that gold on which you haven't paid Zakat,

03:15which is not the case in Zakat.

03:16Point number seven, Zakat cannot be given to the descendants of Homo Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,

03:23which is not the case with Sadaqah.

03:25You can give it to the Prophet also and to his family.

03:29Point number eight, you cannot give Zakat to the dependents.

03:34A father can't give to the son, a person can't give to his father.

03:39Whereas Sadaqah, a father can give to his son, a son can give to the father,

03:42irrespective of the dependent or not.

03:44Point number nine, Zakat in most categories cannot be given to the rich and the healthy.

03:53Whereas Sadaqah can be given to the rich and the healthy.

03:56Zakat cannot be given to the non-Muslims.

03:59Whereas Sadaqah can be given to the non-Muslims.

04:01So these are the major 13 differences between Zakat and Sadaqah.
