00:00By this point, you've probably already seen a whole bunch of videos on this new Galaxy
00:03Z Trifold, so what else is there to say?
00:06I mean, it's just a Galaxy Fold 7 Pro Max, right?
00:09You've got an extra hinge, you've got a bigger tablet screen, but also at the cost of being
00:13a lot thicker, a lot heavier, and also a whole lot more expensive.
00:17While we don't have final pricing on this because it's only launching in select markets,
00:21it's going to roughly translate to about $2,500 to $3,000.
00:37Very few people are actually going to buy this, and I went into my little hands-on session
00:41with Samsung honestly being quite sceptical.
00:44But you know what?
00:45Galaxy Z Trifold.
00:46Even if I can't buy it, even if it'll never launch in the UK, or at least it's first generation,
00:50I want one.
00:51And actually, it answers the question I've had about folding phones for, well, 5, 6, 7
00:56years now.
00:57Because as technically impressive as, say, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is, in my experience,
01:02it's not fundamentally different to just using a regular phone.
01:05You just have a slightly larger and squarer screen.
01:08However, with the Trifold, look how much more screen space you get.
01:13This is a 10-inch 16 by 11 display.
01:16And if you're watching videos, if you're watching movies, it's not just a little bit
01:19bigger.
01:20This change to the aspect ratio makes the Trifold an actual proper tablet.
01:24The Trifold, with three apps side-by-side, and if you fancied a fourth floating one as
01:29well, this is actually usable.
01:31This is not a folding phone, this is a folding tablet.
01:34And it's the first properly good one I've ever used.
01:37Let's not forget Huawei was first, but this is the first Trifold to have, let's say, a
01:41120Hz screen, Galaxy Play services, the promise of seven generations of OS updates, and also
01:47a proper flagship chip that uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy.
01:50Same one that you'd find in the S25 Ultra or the Fold 7.
01:54Yes, it's nearly a year old, but in terms of tablets and foldables, it's still cutting edge.
01:58I don't want to labour the point, but it's this aspect ratio, the 16 by 11, that just
02:03makes all the difference compared to any regular Fold.
02:06And everything else is pretty much borrowed from the Fold 7.
02:09The camera system with the 200 megapixel main camera and the fairly average ultrawide and
02:13telephoto as well, together with the two selfie cameras, and you're getting 512GB or a terabyte
02:18of storage, 16GB of memory across the board, and a pretty good sized battery.
02:22It's not the biggest in the world because Samsung still refuse to use silicon carbon chemistry
02:26for the batteries, but it's the biggest one they've put in a folding device, and it's
02:29actually split into three cells.
02:31And they've still crammed in wireless charging, we get 45W wire charging, at its thinnest point,
02:36it's just 3.9mm, which is incredible.
02:39And then when closed, it's 12.9, which is a pretty chunky phone for a 2026.
02:45But bear in mind, it's still thinner than the Galaxy Fold 5 was.
02:49And there's no getting away from the weight, it's over 300g, which means if you're just using
02:53it like a regular phone with the cover screen, which is basically the same 6.5 inch, 120Hz,
02:5821x9 screen you get on the Fold 7, there's no escaping the fact it is a chunky monkey.
03:03But opened up, it is a very sleek tablet.
03:06It's also worth mentioning there is no S Pen support with the Tri-Fold, which is a bit
03:10of a shame.
03:11Basically there's no digitizer layer to help keep the phone thinned, very much like the
03:15Fold 7.
03:16And I've got to say, the creases, the two creases on the screen were not nearly as bad as I
03:21expected.
03:22You can see them if you, you know, move it around and find a light source behind you,
03:26but actually running your finger over it, it's a lot less noticeable than I was expecting.
03:30The Tri-Fold also comes in any colour you like, as long as it's this carbon black.
03:35That's the only option.
03:36And the whole thing is a bit of a fingerprint magnet.
03:38I would also love if they could put that anti-reflective coating we get on the S25 Ultra
03:44on their flips and folds, especially this guy.
03:46Because together with the two creases and also the slightly dimmer internal screen, it actually
03:51tops out at 1600 nits versus 2600 on the outer cover screen.
03:55And the very reflective, very fingerprinty and smudgy screen.
03:57It could look better.
03:59But it's this stuff that reminds me why I love doing this job.
04:02I just get to play with the coolest sh**.
04:04It's like watching a review of a Lamborghini or a Ferrari on Top Gear.
04:07You're never gonna buy one, but that doesn't make it any less interesting and in this case
04:10even I'd say any less cool.
04:12Samsung has done a terrific job with this first generation Tri-Fold.
04:15Because obviously they've had quite a few years perfecting the regular folds.
04:19The biggest question of course is durability.
04:21How will this hold up over the next few months?
04:23If you saw Mr. Who's the Boss Saren's video, you'll have seen the screen protector get really buffed up.
04:28But it is just that.
04:29It's a screen protector and you can actually peel it off without damaging the phone.
04:32And if you do buy a Tri-Fold, Samsung will replace the protector for free.
04:36And they do also say each of the two hinges has been tested for 200,000 actions.
04:40And we get the same IP48 water and dust resistance as the regular Fold 7.
04:44So I went in skeptical, but I came out actually really excited for the Tri-Fold.
04:49I can't wait to see what they do next.
04:52And fingers crossed for them to launch it in more markets.
04:55But what do you reckon?
04:56If you could buy a Galaxy Z Tri-Fold, would you?
04:59Let me know what you make of this in the comments below.
05:01Thank you so much for watching guys.
05:02I'll see you next time right here on The Tech Chat.
