Gateshead’s New Play Park Set to Open This Summer

The Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre located in Blaydon, are preparing to open a brand new play park this summer holidays- the first in Gateshead for a long time.

00:00Well I think it's a wonderful opportunity that a new play park is being brought to the area and

00:05it's a fantastic initiative to get children outdoors and it's obviously brilliant for

00:11educational and developmental initiatives including sort of like obviously there's a

00:16big focus and drive in schools for that as well but I think it'd be it's brilliant to sort of

00:21bring those local communities into this like wonderful area like the whole park itself is

00:28about 96.8 acres or something like that so it's a very large area for like local families and

00:35children to come and enjoy so yeah I think and obviously it's a very important big push at the

00:42moment to get children outdoors and bringing more children into this local area as well so I think

00:49it's sort of a lost little mine like gold mine this little area or iron mine coal mine

00:55in this area so I think bringing children out being more active obviously play park hasn't been

01:02made for some time now so yeah hopefully I'll just get more children out through this summer holidays

01:09the new player park has been thoughtfully designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings

01:14featuring wooden play structures such as a climbing frame it swings in a roundabout it's all set on turf

01:20rather than synthetic flooring so the park continues the area's commitment to natural landscaping

01:27obviously groundwork itself is um like an environmental charity as well as sort of like a social

01:32charity and I think it's really important for the local residents as well that it's all natural so

01:39the building itself is very natural and we've got sort of that like green roofing already as well so

01:46I think fitting in with the local landscape as well obviously we've got such a diverse

01:50wildlife we don't want something that's just a big eyesore in the middle of the park yeah and even

01:54then children want to be around natural things as well and so yeah I think it's a it was really

01:59important for it to be all natural and also for it to not be too enormous as well so that it fits in with

02:04the landscape and it's not too in your face the addition enhances groundwork north east and

02:10Cumbria's heritage centre which celebrates the local woodland rare wildlife and the areas which

02:15history in british sword making and the global iron and steel industries the idea for the park came

02:22directly from visitor feedback with families highlighting it as the top recommendation for

02:27improving the centre we can look at it in terms of our centre as well so obviously we we want to play

02:33a park we want families to come and enjoy the area and our centre itself the money goes straight back

02:40into groundwork north east and cumbria so all of and that's a charity just for anybody who doesn't know

02:46groundwork and so obviously yes we'll get the income from that but it'll immediately go straight back into

02:52the charity and straight back into the local community and the environment so yeah bringing bringing

02:56more sales to the cafe is fantastic
