00:01Work has begun to demolish the Gateshead flyover on the A167 in Gateshead, marking the start
00:08of a long planned removal of the closed structure after safety concerns led to its shutdown in
00:13December 2024. Weeks of preparation are now moving into physical demolition,
00:20with steel supports installed beneath the elevated road and specialist machines beginning to break
00:26away sections of concrete from the 1970s structure along the edge of Gateshead town centre, as the
00:32area continues to change. The first parts to be removed are the on and off ramps near the centre
00:38of the flyover close to the Sunderland Road bus lane, before work gradually moves south towards
00:445 Bridges roundabouts and surrounding junctions later in the programme phase. Previous safety fears led to
00:52the suspension of the Tyne and Weir Metro services across the River Tyne in late 2024, and engineers
00:59are now closely monitoring the impact of demolition above the underground tunnels, ongoing safety
01:04checks will continue. The full removal of the flyover is expected to continue through the coming months,
01:12with the completion targeted for the autumn and hopes that clearing the structure will support wider
01:17regeneration plans for Gateshead town centre, once that demolition work is finished, and then the final
01:24phase will conclude.
