00:00Kidnapped as a kid, but released by Creations.
00:03Here's your look at the brand new Mattel, Master Universe Origins,
00:05Despera, powerful captain of the evil Horde.
00:23As a loyal servant of the Horde, Despera,
00:26known for her formidable combat skills and dedication to Hordak,
00:29the last time we saw her was in the Classics line,
00:32and now we've brought her to the Origins line,
00:34in time for the 40th anniversary of She-Ra, Princess of Power,
00:37which is a fitting, since, spoiler alert,
00:39Despera was born as Princess Adora,
00:41the alter ego of She-Ra, and the twin sister of He-Man,
00:44who helped her discover her true identity.
00:47Long before she was the rebel Adora, she was the adopted recruit.
00:50Let's take the tape measure, shall we,
00:52and see how tall the Mattel Creations, Despera, stands.
00:55Now, she's available right now over on Mattel Creations' site,
00:58as a Canadian collector, I can tell you, I paid $30 for the figure.
01:01If you're a U.S. collector, expect to pay just a little less than that.
01:05Despera, who will, of course, become Adora,
01:07is going to stand at 5.5 inches in height.
01:10She does, but you can see it for yourself.
01:12That works out to be a figure that's 14 centimeters tall.
01:14You'd like to think, at least, I'd have a She-Ra ready for this review,
01:18and unfortunately, I can't find my origin She-Ra.
01:20Maybe my daughter's taking her upstairs.
01:22Here's, though, what the figure looks like with the regular Hordak.
01:24That's not true, really.
01:25It's the regular Hordak, yet the head is coming from the Buzzsaw Hordak deluxe release.
01:29I always really think that the smiling face works a little bit better.
01:32If you like, though, his regular ugly mug,
01:34it happens to be then used as well with the Mattel Creations exclusive Hurricane Hordak.
01:38Let's bring in a Horde trooper.
01:40Just bring in one.
01:41I actually have a couple of Horde troopers,
01:42but I only really need the one for comparison.
01:44So let's bring in also a couple of other examples.
01:46Here's also what she looks like with Horde fellow members,
01:49not only Mantena, but also Grizzler on the other side.
01:52Now, the only other time we've gotten Despera looking like this
01:55was with the original Four Horsemen Master Universe Classics Despera,
01:59which had a very similar look to what we're getting here.
02:01I believe she also came included with her swords.
02:03What she didn't come included with, though, was this mini-comic.
02:05This was entitled Phantoms of Despera,
02:08which you can actually see She-Ra on one side
02:10and then the adopted Adora on the other.
02:13I do like the way they've got that split right down the middle,
02:15sort of her dark side and her light side,
02:17and the power sword sort of splitting in the middle.
02:19If we look through, though, the comic,
02:22we get some really nice images not only of Leech.
02:24There's Hordak.
02:25There's also Adora down below there as well.
02:29This is all, by the way, flashbacks.
02:31So when she first kind of holds off the sword,
02:33she kind of is thinking back to the days that she was fighting along with the Horde.
02:37There's also as well a Shadow Weaver there up the top corner.
02:40Really nice-looking artwork.
02:42You know, being sort of disappointed with what we've been getting artwork styling
02:45for some of the Master Universe mini-comics as of late,
02:47and especially Turtles of Grayskull,
02:48I think, though, that they've kind of upped the ante
02:50with the art styling of what we're getting inside the comic
02:53that comes in clear with Despera.
02:54Like, especially this image right here,
02:56with a cracked glass and Despera on the one side,
02:59She-Ra on the other.
03:00There's no advertisements on the back for any other figures,
03:02and this, to my knowledge, will be the only time we'll ever get this mini-comic.
03:06Unless maybe they use the comic again, we get another version of She-Ra,
03:09but I think it's likely that we're only going to see this one time release of this comic.
03:13Let's move that off, though, to the side.
03:15Okay, so when it comes to Despera's accessories,
03:17she comes first of all with these two blades.
03:20I can already tell you right away, I think the blades are way too big.
03:23If you're looking at just even like the guard and the hilt,
03:25and you compare it with the size of her hands,
03:27they're way too big, and even just to put it next to her,
03:29this broad sword, even though it's broad, goes almost to above her shoulders.
03:34Now, you can take the swords, and you can obviously display them in her hands,
03:38but I think it serves more as more of a reminder that the swords are way too big.
03:43It's almost like they've used themselves the Massey Inverse Classics Triclop swords,
03:47even though like Triclops, I think his had three dots on the guard,
03:51but a very similar guard, a very similar hilt, and a very similar sized sword.
03:55I would have probably even shrunk the sword down by half the size,
04:00because again, like if you're putting it at this,
04:01look at the ridiculous size of how big these blades are.
04:05It also obviously makes the figure a lot more front heavy too,
04:08so you're going to have to lean her back just a bit,
04:09so she can accommodate holding blades as big like this.
04:13There's also storage space as well, so you can go ahead and take those swords.
04:16You can look on the back of the figure and locate it on the top.
04:19They're not necessarily sheaths, but at least there's a place to store them.
04:22You take one and crisscross the applesauce and just put the other one in the other way.
04:27At least there's storage space for that.
04:29I mean, yes, it does look a little bit big from the front,
04:31but at least there's a place to store the swords.
04:33Again, you're not looking to put them into her hands.
04:36Obviously, the big reveal to this as well is that she's going to be wearing a mask,
04:40so let's go ahead and just actually remove these swords first.
04:42Just kind of move them off to the side.
04:44Her face actually is very similar, in fact, to Hordak.
04:47I mean, how egotistical that Hordak not only has her working for him,
04:51but she has to also wear a mask that's similar to his face.
04:55As you can see, just short of maybe having not as much paint,
04:58Hordak has clearly a lot larger visible eyes.
05:01Her teeth are also, well, clearly, I mean, this is not her real face.
05:05This is just her mask.
05:06But you can see also she has the fangs in the front, very similar to Hordak's too.
05:10Now, the mask itself only just really attaches on the back of her face.
05:13It's sort of clamped on either side, so you just go ahead.
05:16First of all, I want to show you guys what that face looks like.
05:18Very similar color to Hordak.
05:20Yeah, again, you got the little red eyes there, beady little red eyes.
05:23Nicely painted teeth.
05:25But to go ahead and remove the mask, it's just a case of just pulling it off the sides.
05:30That's it.
05:31If it was big enough, you could probably wear it around as a ring too.
05:34But yeah, it's maybe on my pinky.
05:36Okay, maybe as a pinky finger ring, I can do that as well.
05:39Who's going to, who in their right mind is going to wear a despair ring?
05:42Right now, somebody in the back is putting up their hand.
05:43Oh, I would, I would.
05:45But yeah, that's basically just going to, that's how it works.
05:47It just clips on the side of her face.
05:49I don't worry as much where that they're actually putting the mask.
05:53I don't think it's in a place necessarily that's going to scrape away the paint.
05:56But once you remove the mask, this is basically what Adora's face would look like underneath.
06:02Again, like with a shorter hairstyle like this, it doesn't read as much like Adora,
06:07other than just the fact that she's got the blonde hair.
06:09It's a good looking face, I will say though.
06:10I mean, again, she's kind of got like the darker eyes underneath.
06:13I guess, I'm guessing that's makeup.
06:16The face is pretty though, for what it is.
06:18And spin this around so you guys can see it from all the sides.
06:22Now, she does also have a cape.
06:23The cape technically could be removed as well.
06:26To do all that, first just want to show you guys what the armor looks like.
06:30Now, it doesn't really have like a horde symbol necessarily.
06:33So don't expect like the gargoyle face with the, you know, like the bat wings.
06:37Instead, what she kind of gets like is this kind of arrow shape.
06:40Now, when you move, obviously, the shoulder around, it's going to kind of disjoint some of that.
06:45So it's not going to look seamless.
06:46Again, you could take the cape off.
06:48The cape is sculpted all in plastic.
06:50I like that it's textured like this.
06:52So it looks like a little basket weaving.
06:54It's a soft enough plastic too.
06:56It's not super rigid either.
06:58But if you didn't like this at all, because it's going to obviously flop around.
07:01There's no real place that it's pegged on the back of the figure's body.
07:04All you have to do is really just pop off the figure's head, just like that.
07:07And then we go ahead and just take.
07:08Like, so like the cape and the shoulders are all one piece.
07:11You just slide that off all together.
07:13And it's still fully painted on the back.
07:15It's not like they phoned it in at all.
07:16So you can still get like a door just displayed.
07:19Like, let's just say you want to have two of these, for example.
07:22One where just the door, or what she will be a door.
07:24If you want to just have her displayed without the cape, without the mask, do that in that way.
07:29And then just have the other figure displayed with all the things we just finished taking off.
07:32Nicely painted body overall.
07:34I would imagine she's probably using a very similar style of body.
07:37I probably should have brought in like Evil Lynn and maybe even, I don't know, maybe Tila.
07:41Because they probably would have used also similar arms, similar torso.
07:44She's got a different skirting, though.
07:46Like, the skirting is, like, if you look at it, it kind of fits over top of her waist.
07:51So you'd have to kind of pop the waist off.
07:54You'd remove this while we were just undressing her all together.
07:56Yeah, you could take that off, too.
07:57So that's basically what she would look like with, like, everything stripped down to the basics.
08:01Still, there's a lot of nice paint that goes in here, too.
08:04Like, you can see, like, brand new sculpted boots.
08:06They've painted now in the thighs.
08:08They've painted in the arm area there, as well.
08:10And painted a brand new, like, torso piece.
08:11Well, I shouldn't say a brand new torso piece.
08:13My guess is that they're probably using, like, the Shearer body or the standard female bodies.
08:18But really went in there and did a lot of cool painting.
08:20The way they've actually painted this, it kind of makes her look like a Black Widow.
08:24Not Black Widow from the Marvel comics, but I guess really somewhat, too.
08:27But just that Black Widow kind of symbol.
08:30Even though it's really like an hourglass, it's more like an elongated diamond, in this case.
08:35I think the paint, though, is really nice on the figure.
08:37Now, for the figure's articulation, if you're expecting anything new from, like, outside the regular female bodies, don't.
08:44Because the female articulation is going to still carry over here, as well, to Despera.
08:47Head's going to be on a bulge, right?
08:48So, yeah, you can rotate the head all the way around.
08:51It can look down and up.
08:52You can also move it back and forth, as well.
08:55The arms comfortably rotate all the way around.
08:57It may not be as comfortable, granted, if you have the shoulder pads in place.
09:00I mean, if you, like, should we just...
09:02Okay, hold on a second.
09:03Let's just kind of go through everything else.
09:05So, she does have, like, again, your T-pose for the arms.
09:08That's on both sides.
09:09She has a swivel on her arm.
09:10That's on this side, too.
09:11There's an elbow bend.
09:13There's a hand rotation.
09:14The only thing I would be critical about when it comes to using this body is...
09:18I don't know.
09:18It seems very loose.
09:20The top of the torso is very loose from the bottom.
09:22I don't think it at all has anything to do with the fact I detach the body just to take off the skirting.
09:28Maybe it just is the case that they've used the body so often that, over time, yeah, it's developed a little bit more looseness.
09:33The legs do split out.
09:35Almost a full split.
09:35Well, yeah, full splits for Despera.
09:37You can take the legs and move forward and move them back.
09:39A little bit of a swivel there at the top of the thigh.
09:42Single hinge for the knee.
09:43Although I noticed with my knees, not my knees, her knees, they're very tight.
09:48Very tight to the point where I don't feel like I really want to bend them without heating them up first.
09:52I didn't really actually heat them up prior to this review.
09:54I mean, again, you can bend it, but it bends at super, super tight friction.
09:59The boots are a separate piece, so they rotate back and forth.
10:02You can hinge the feet up and down this way, and you can also rock them back and forth as well.
10:06Short of maybe a few little looseness aspects to now the figure.
10:10I mean, again, like the lower end of her waist is super loose.
10:13The only other thing I would really say from a criticism standpoint is I do wish that the figure could have maybe included smaller swords.
10:19I think, for me personally, I think the swords are way too big.
10:23Just go ahead and get everything back on her body here.
10:25Pop off the head.
10:27Again, like if you're looking at the back too, there's this peg right here.
10:30And I don't think it actually, it's not even really so much a peg.
10:33It's just so it sits more flushed against her torso.
10:36Go ahead and just take her head back and put it back in place.
10:39Now, when it also comes to displaying her on the shelf,
10:41I think what I might just end up doing is sort of kind of have the, like the mask kind of in her hand like this.
10:48So it looks like she just took off her mask.
10:50I can't see myself really ever displaying the mask on her.
10:53As good as it, I think like Mattel's done such a great job on sculpting and painting it.
10:57But I think it loses the fact that there's a mystery, a surprise underneath.
11:00Now, obviously, anybody that doesn't know, anybody who's not within the know that Adora ends up being,
11:05obviously, she is adopted in as a child to the Horde and then eventually frees herself and becomes part of the rebel.
11:11Rebel. If you didn't know that, though, and then obviously you just have the figure displayed on the shelf like this,
11:16some friend of yours is going to come up to you and say, well, like, who's this figure?
11:21Is that that almost looks like She-Ra?
11:23And then you'll have to kind of explain to him.
11:25Well, it's sort of like the backwards end of like Luke Skywalker's backstory.
11:30Instead of being adopted by good people, She-Ra was kind of adopted from bad people, that obviously being Hordak.
11:37And then, of course, she just realized the error of her ways and became a rebel after that.
11:40I like the figure. I think the figure looks really nice.
11:43And up to this point, the only other time we've gotten this figure released was the Masked Universe Classics.
11:48Also was a larger scale figure, a lot more expensive, too.
11:51Again, I really like the look of her.
11:53The only thing I don't like, though, is the fact that the swords are way too big.
11:56Like, especially, it becomes even more apparent when you start to put the swords in her hand.
12:00I know, again, we talked about this at the beginning of this review.
12:03To go and put the swords back in her hand like this, not only is it visibly, I think, too awkward looking.
12:09Because, again, like, I just don't think the swords work with her size of body.
12:12But it also makes the figure a lot more front-heavy, too.
12:15Bringing in also one of the other Mattel Creations exclusives.
12:19This was the Hurricane Hordak.
12:21Hurricane Hordak, I ended up picking up two of those just so I could have one still sealed.
12:24Because I remember having the Hurricane Hordak as a kid.
12:26I had one sealed, and then I had the one loose on display.
12:29I don't know if I have a very similar feeling to Despera.
12:32I like the look of the figure, but not enough I feel like where I want to keep one sealed away,
12:37kept inside of her plastic prison, hopefully that she's able to still to breathe.
12:40I think I'm happy just to have grabbed the one.
12:43She is still available.
12:44She is, good news, still available on Mattel Creations site.
12:47As a Canadian, I could say I paid $30.
12:49As a U.S. collector, you expect to pay a little bit less than that.
12:51I think she has a limit of three.
12:53I can't see many people buying more than really one, or possibly even two.
12:57But they are available, as of right now, on Mattel Creations site, if you're interested.
13:02I think the Mattel Creations is an ideal place that Mattel could put some of those deep-cut characters in there,
13:08that collectors can source them out without having to try to find them in the stores.
13:11I don't think, though, Despera would have worked maybe as well as being a peg figure,
13:16just because, again, collectors walking by that may be familiar with She-Ra,
13:20but may not be familiar with She-Ra's origins.
13:23Again, for the price of what they're selling these on,
13:26I mean, Mattel Creations selling a She-Ra figure or as a Despera figure for $30.
13:30$30 isn't bad at all.
13:32At the time that I actually ordered Despera, I ordered actually another figure as well,
13:36that I've been kind of eyeing.
13:37I've been, you know, twist my rubber arm.
13:39If the chance comes up, or it's on sale, or I happen to be on that site buying something else anyways,
13:44I'm going to buy this said figure as well.
13:47You'll know what that said figure is in the upcoming review.
13:50But what do you guys think of Despera?
13:52Let me know down below in the comments section.
13:54What other deep-cut characters, lesser-known characters,
13:57do you think that Mattel should tackle next and be exclusive to their site?
14:01Let me know down below.
14:02If you guys did also enjoy this video, by the way, do it a song, throw it a like, yeah.
14:06If you guys want to stick around for more so, and I certainly hope so,
14:08because we are going to be looking at another Mass Universe figure.
14:11It's not going to be a deep-cut.
14:13Many people are probably going to be familiar with this character,
14:15and it has a lot to do with the Horde.
14:18That video is, by the way, going to be coming your way,
14:20so make sure you're coming back with Peepers Peeled.
14:22As always, guys, thanks for watching.
14:23See you guys next time.
