Hello and welcome! In this video, I'm sharing my recent personal experience with a persistent and worrying lump that appeared on my back. After weeks of hoping it would disappear, I decided to stop guessing and seek professional medical advice.
I visited my GP, Dr. Mae Tun, at Chevron Advanced Medical. The outcome, thankfully, was reassuring: the mystery lump was diagnosed as a Sebaceous Cyst (also known as an epidermal inclusion cyst). These are typically benign, slow-growing, non-cancerous sacs under the skin, usually filled with keratin.
The Doctor's Crucial Advice Dr. Mae's directive for me was straightforward: No treatment necessary—just leave it alone! She explained that the recent inflammation was actually a positive sign that my body was actively working to resolve it naturally.
While my case was simple, it's important to be aware of the standard treatments required if a cyst becomes painful, infected, or is a cosmetic concern:
Steroid Injection: To reduce inflammation without infection.
Surgical Excision: The most reliable treatment, as it removes the entire cyst sac to prevent recurrence.
🛑 WARNING: Do Not Self-Treat Cysts This is the most critical takeaway from my journey: Never attempt to squeeze, pop, or drain a sebaceous cyst yourself.
High Infection Risk: You risk severe infection and potentially an abscess.
Guaranteed Recurrence: Popping the contents leaves the sac wall behind, meaning the cyst is highly likely to return, often larger and more inflamed.
My experience reinforced a key principle: While you can use AI tools to research symptoms, there is no substitute for the accurate diagnosis and professional guidance of a licensed healthcare provider.
If you are concerned about any lump or change on your body, please make an appointment with a doctor immediately.
Let me know if you've had a sebaceous cyst and what your treatment experience was! 👇
00:00so I first noticed it in the shower as you do because it happened to be on my normal sort of
00:08soaping my body routine it right in the path of it and at first it felt so it's on my back so I've
00:16got something on my back and at first it was small and it just felt like a pimple exactly like a
00:21pimple like you know it was a little bit sore and tender to touch and so I just utterly ignored it
00:26and things are just so busy day to day that little lumps and bumps and whatever props up on your skin
00:33or your body it's just a lot easier to just put in the oh it'll go away basket but the problem is
00:38every time I soak so it right in the path of it so if I've got soap like I sort of you know do this as
00:44you do and then what I would do is I've got soap here and I sort of do my back like this and it's
00:50right there and so I was feeling it sort of most days and I kept thinking it's going to go away
00:57it's going to go away and most of the time I didn't really think about it but then it started to get
01:03just too big to ignore basically like it's I'll show you how big it is now so it's sort of that
01:13big now and it's big enough that even when I'm just walking around you can sort of notice it that
01:18there's this lump and it sort of moves under my skin like when I move it it sort of moves around
01:27like that which I'm obviously not happy with so I am finally going to stop ignoring this and I'm
01:37going to go across to Chevron Advanced Medical and get a GP to actually look at it your bag
01:42because you're my awesome buddy with so many of these appointments come on this way this way
01:48come on do you want to say do you want to press the back in a bit
01:51yeah this one okay well this one might be that one
01:55yeah we're not going there today darling we're going across to Chevron Island
02:03no not today we're going across the medical centre
02:08okay so here we are um Chevron Advanced Medical and Skin Cancer Clinic here on Chevron Island
02:19thank you
02:21oh my god that's coming
02:26and then she said oh yes
02:29I have my secret weapon which helps me get through many dental appointments and medical appointments
02:42I actually do expensive screen time a lot like he does not have much screen time at all but when I do
02:49he can use it as a tool that is really useful
02:51and it's nice and cool in here
02:54it's actually nice to sit back there there's no chores to do
02:58I need to sit here with children in there
03:01so it's very good knees actually the kind Dr May has now had a look at it
03:11she says it's a sebaceous cyst so that's that's actually really good
03:18so what that means is it's hopefully going to resolve on its own
03:21and at the moment it is a bit inflamed
03:24but that's actually good news because that's at the point where the body is either trying to sort of resolve it so that it kind of disappears
03:31or it's going to get a little bit bigger and possibly then sort of do a bit of a burst thing
03:35you know and she advised to put a little bit of dressing over it if it gets to that point obviously
03:40because I joke that it's probably going to burst just as I've changed the bed linen
03:44and go all over that
03:46but anyway so that's good news
03:47so nothing actually has to be done for it today
03:50so we're just going to leave it because it's not bothering me
03:54like obviously I can feel it in the shower
03:56but now that I know that it's fine I'm just so happy and relaxed
04:01and that's a really good lesson actually even for me because I knew it was getting bigger
04:06I was scared about it
04:07but look you know the best advice I can give to people is just go and get anything you're worried about
04:15or concerned about or anything that's different in your body
04:18just go and see your doctor because chances are it's all going to be fine anyway
04:24and you're going to feel so much better
04:26and if it does does need treating
04:28then just obviously it gets treated and then it's all good
04:31so anyway that was good news for me today
04:38and thank you
04:40that was so nice to see Dr. May she is such a nice doctor
04:56and what is really nice about going to see regular people is just you catch up and yeah like it's just really nice
05:05the other thing I would really encourage people to do is get a really good general practitioner that you trust that you get along with and go and see them regularly for whatever health checks that you need because it's really really good and I think I did see something the other day about human connection and you know you can get on chat GPT and you can put in all your symptoms and you can try and find out what's wrong and all that and AI can give you a lot of information but nothing beats.
05:22sitting there with your trusted doctor sharing a smile sharing a smile sharing a laugh you know having someone genuinely know about your health history and someone who cares enough about you as a person as opposed to just AI so I'm really glad I came in today to see you.
05:29my doctor and again very relieved that it's good news.

06:01inflamed at the moment so my body's busy doing its hopeful healing thing and I'm actually going
06:06to put some red light therapy on it as well because if it is inflamed then the red light
06:10therapy is just going to help that healing process
