Residents of St. Augustine are under severe flooding. Four to five feet of water left
00:05
them stranded in their homes, unable to venture to school or work. This family braved the
00:11
water to retrieve supplies but encountered severe difficulties to get back to their home
00:17
as the water level rose significantly. Unable to go to work, these men did what they could
00:23
to make the lives of their fellow neighbors a bit easier.
00:26
So we are coming to you from Dookie Singh Extension in the constituency of St. Augustine. Homes are
00:34
flooded out for up to six feet and residents are operating this makeshift ferry service
00:40
to get residents to and from their homes. This tank a relief for some. Residents even used old
00:49
fritters to shuttle others like my cameraman Brandon Benoit. What may seem like making
00:55
light of a tough situation is just a way of life for the residents of Bassey Street Extension.
01:02
Residents like Dinesh Singh. The situation is very very bad.
01:08
This has been always a problem with the flooding. For the past nine years we have not got any kind of
01:18
regrets towards the situation. He heralds the work of his MPs saying it will take serious engineering
01:24
to save them from this perennial flooding. I say I'm very happy with Katija Amin because she has been
01:31
very very accommodating towards the spring village community. I know up to last night seven half past
01:44
seven she has been working on the ground trying to alleviate all the flooding. Another resident however
01:52
complains of not receiving relief. St. Augustine MP Khadija Amin who is also the local government
02:13
minister says she will be visiting her area this evening after parliament with supplies for affected constituents.
