00:00I was diagnosed in May 2016 at 12 years old and the symptoms were going to the toilet a lot,
00:18drinking a lot, really fatigued, loss of weight but I'd put it all down to playing football and
00:24being fit until one weekend I took really unwell and was taken to hospital and that's when I was
00:28diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes is an endocrine condition so it affects your body's
00:33production of insulin so in type 1 diabetes your body ceases to produce insulin and therefore we
00:39need to introduce insulin therapy or there's other types of diabetes such as type 2 diabetes
00:43which tends to be diagnosed later in life and it can be managed with tablets and then later on
00:48and we can change and sometimes we need to introduce insulin at that point. It's controlled by I'm on
00:54an Omnipod and so it controls everything I just put in my carbs and it gives me my insulin.
01:00Type 1 diabetes tends to onset earlier in life so it tends to be onset in young people so children
01:07and right up into your 20s and sometimes that can go a little bit later and type 2 diabetes
01:12tends to onset later in life and it happens whenever your body either doesn't produce
01:17sufficient insulin or your body is not receptive to the insulin that your body is producing. So
01:23there's four main signs of diabetes that we look out for so running to the toilet and being thirsty
01:29and losing weight and being really tired. So my role and my hope is that young people feel that they
01:36have somebody to reach out to and if they are struggling with their diabetes management and so
01:42that I can point them in the right direction of who to contact and who can support them and I hope to
01:47be at their clinic appointments so that they have a familiar face and every time they're coming up to
01:51the diabetes centre. It's been brilliant it's the same from when I was a child right up to when I was
01:55an adult they're only a phone call away anytime you're in they're offering you to see the dietitian
01:59to see a doctor anything that you want to support you. It's manageable you know it's about don't let
02:05control you know it control you you control it.
