00:00Nestled in Taman Parwira Gomba is a charming community garden known as Garden 8.
00:09The lush green space is filled with vegetables, fruits, flowers and more, offering a literal breath of fresh air from the hustle and bustle of the city.
00:19Not long ago, this space was once a neglected back alley, until Iqmal Fajri Daniel and his wife Aida Haniza Adnan saw its potential.
01:04The couple then approached their neighbours with the idea of a community garden.
01:08And that was how Garden 8 sprang to life.
01:12The space is certainly a visual delight, but for members of the Garden 8 community, it means so much more.
01:19The community uses environmentally friendly gardening practices such as composting, rainwater harvesting, and recycling among others.
01:36So what did they do to transform a back alley into a thriving community garden?
01:53Maybe small scale dulu. We talk to our immediate neighbour and do a pilot project.
02:01Iqmal shares that it's important to engage the local authorities, secure funding to sustain the garden, and ensure finances are kept transparent.
02:10Apart from regular meetings to review finances and discuss other matters, the community conducts social activities to strengthen bonds.
02:20We want to bring back nostalgia.
02:24When we were little, we were sitting in a campong.
02:29So if you say, sometimes you want to cook, you don't have enough salt, you don't want to buy anything, you can just ask people to come to the side.
02:39But that environment that no longer exists, especially in urban areas.
02:46So by having this kind of activities, programs, so we want to try to bring back those old times.
03:00So we always meet up and we help each other.
03:04We take care of one another.
03:06If there are people who are sick, if there are people who need help.
03:10So we are already known.
03:11So now we become a big family.
