01:13The Sungai Buloh lad

01:14began rapping in the most

01:15unexpected way

01:17during a school oral test at 15.

01:20He decided to rap

01:21a traditional Malay poem,

01:23scoring full marks from his teacher

01:25and earning instant street cred

01:26with his friends.

01:28The 2008 Tamil hip-hop album

01:30Vallavan by Yogi B and Natchitra

01:32was another major influence,

01:34inspiring him to dive into

01:36Tamil rap.

01:37He started out as an

01:38underground Tamil rapper

01:40back in 2011.

01:42While working at a call center,

01:44he came up with the idea

01:45of adopting the name Washu Jay

01:47and adding Mandarin

01:48to his rap repertoire.

01:50So I was working

01:52with a call center

01:56handling a Chinese customer,

01:59Chinese client.

02:00So I need to speak in Chinese.

02:02Whenever I answer the call,

02:04I need to introduce like

02:12So I keep on saying

02:13我是Jay,我是Jay,我是Jay.

02:14I'm like, okay.

02:16I want to make this as my rapper name

02:19since I can speak Chinese.

02:21Most of the time,

02:22a Tamil rapper,

02:23they will mix it with,

02:24most of the time a Tamil rapper

02:25will mix it with English,

02:26mix it with Malay.

02:27So I want to be different,

02:28so I want to mix it with Chinese.

02:30That's my idea.

02:31Washu Jay says he owes it all

02:34to his parents

02:35for sending him to a

02:36Chinese vernacular school

02:37ever since kindergarten.

02:39But mastering Mandarin

02:41wasn't easy for the rapper.

02:43He practiced with his Chinese friends,

02:45took extra classes,

02:47and kept pushing.

02:49That grit earned him

02:50not just fluency,

02:51but eventually a fan base

02:53among Mandarin speakers.

02:55One of his biggest moments,

02:57a message from hip-hop legend

02:59landslide after his 2013

03:01Mandarin debut

03:02in DJ Fuzz's

03:03Risma Merdeka song.

03:05He texted me like,

03:08bro, those days

03:10people called him

03:11as Black China man.

03:14So you are the

03:15Black China boy now.

03:17So it's a big compliment.

03:20He's a legend, bro.

03:21Washu Jay is usually busy

03:23dazzling crowds

03:24at Chinese New Year events

03:26with his impressive

03:27Mandarin rap skills.

03:28However, this year

03:29he's taken a step back

03:30from the festive hustle

03:32to focus on carving out

03:33a name for himself

03:34as a Mandarin rapper

03:36all year round.

03:37With that goal in mind,

03:39he's gearing up to release

03:41mostly in Mandarin.
