00:00Mercy there was great and grace was clean,
00:05pardon there was multiplied to me,
00:10hell my virgin soul for liberty and calvary.
00:21So this last hymn that we sung, 967,
00:25began, years I spent in vanity and pride.
00:28The second verse was, by God's word at last my sin I learned
00:32and I trembled at the law I'd spurned.
00:35Now, the reason for my talk this evening,
00:38it's been a bit of a soul-searching time
00:43since Andy asked me to share my testimony.
00:48What is the man that stands up here talking to the congregation?
00:53The man who stands up here has an awfully important
00:58life-giving or soul-destroying word.
01:03We can go away comforted and exhorted and encouraged
01:07or we can go away thinking,
01:10what did I waste my time for?
01:12What is God doing?
01:14Is that man doing what he ought to be doing?
01:16It's a very, very difficult place to be
01:19and I've been in that place many times
01:23and I'm sure not as many as other people have been
01:28where you really are at a loss for words
01:31as to what is relevant, what to say.
01:35And it's a difficult place sometimes to be in.
01:38I found it extremely difficult, more so this time,
01:40because Andy's request was,
01:43what is your testimony?
01:46Involved sort of a fair amount of me.
01:50I'm going to be talking from Psalm 116
01:53when I get to the second part of 967.
01:56Now I've given to Jesus everything,
01:59but don't open your Bibles yet.
02:00Well, you can do anyway.
02:02I'm going to go right back to the very beginning.
02:05Possibly it'll raise some eyebrows,
02:07but I was at the Queen's coronation.
02:09I'm going right back to the very beginning
02:11because my whole life has been,
02:13what is the purpose of life?
02:15Right through childhood,
02:17I was a loner, I had companions,
02:20but I didn't have any friends.
02:21Ultimately, eventually I had one friend I could call on.
02:24But when I was about five years old,
02:27I was, if it hadn't been for my mother,
02:30I probably wouldn't have been here
02:32because I was sitting on the hearth of our lounge
02:35as she was preparing my clothing
02:36to take me off to boarding school to get me taken
02:39because in those days, cars were scarce,
02:42transport was hard to get.
02:43And she sent me outside and said,
02:45Ken, go and see what that tap is hissing for.
02:47The labourer must have left it open.
02:50I got up and I went outside
02:51and I came back and I said,
02:53no, the tap's closed.
02:54And she said, that's strange.
02:55The hissing stopped.
02:57So I went back and I sat where I was again
02:59and the hissing started again.
03:01And she looked over at me and said,
03:02don't move!
03:03And she came across and she grabbed me
03:05and she threw me to the side.
03:07And there was a huge cobra
03:08standing behind me in the hearth,
03:11which was ready to bite me,
03:15to strike.
03:16It would have hit me in the neck or in the head
03:18because it was up here.
03:19So I survived that lot.
03:23And then as my life went on,
03:25I survived diving accidents in the river
03:27because we used to swim in the river,
03:28whether they were swollen or whether they were low.
03:30And we had a favourite swimming hole,
03:33my brother and I at home,
03:34where we boarded on the river.
03:36One day I decided to dive in
03:38instead of going over with our swing
03:39and I dived onto a rock.
03:42The result of that,
03:44fortunately, it wasn't devastating.
03:46I survived as I'm here today,
03:47but it did do some damage.
03:50When I was at school,
03:51I had a broken neck
03:52and I was in traction for three months
03:54for it to heal.
03:56Funnily enough, yesterday,
03:58somebody, I read something online
03:59about this woman who,
04:01she was having her hen's party
04:03and she was asked to do something
04:05and she said,
04:06oh, I was a bit old for that.
04:07She's paralysed because she broke her neck.
04:09So why I'm saying all these things
04:12is because this is the person
04:15that has made me the person who I am,
04:19that you would know me better
04:21when I stand up here to preach
04:22as we ought to know other people.
04:25So when I left school
04:27and became a mechanic,
04:29a fuel tank exploded in my face
04:32and threw up a whole saucer
04:34full of molten lead into my eyes
04:35and I was blinded for a month
04:37in hospital and I couldn't see.
04:39And thank the Lord,
04:40I got my sight back.
04:42Went farming later on
04:44and one day we had
04:45an incident of poaching
04:47where poachers came onto the farm
04:48and tried to kill the deer
04:49and I chased him
04:51and was attacked by the dogs
04:52that they put onto me.
04:54So I had to go
04:55and get rabies injections
04:57to make sure that I wasn't going
04:59to get infected with rabies.
05:03Later on in the business
05:05that I was managing,
05:06I was sitting in a little office,
05:08a two-room office
05:09and I saw two people
05:10coming across the yard
05:11to obviously come and purchase stuff.
05:14I was alone
05:14and they walked into the office
05:16and they said,
05:18we've come to buy blocks.
05:20So I said, that's fine.
05:21The blocks are so much.
05:23They said, you don't understand.
05:25We have come to take blocks.
05:30So I said, well, they are so much.
05:33Oh, you're stupid.
05:34Don't you understand?
05:36We're taking the blocks.
05:38So I said, no, I'm not stupid.
05:41By this time I was saved.
05:43I said, I'm not stupid,
05:45but you're the stupid one.
05:47And I don't know why I spoke like this
05:48because there was no way out for me.
05:50These guys were armed.
05:52And they said, what do you mean?
05:54So I had some Zulu tracts with me.
05:59Before this, I had learned
06:01to read and write Zulu
06:02by having prayer meetings
06:06with the laborers on the farm
06:07where I'd previously been
06:08and by making my kitchen servant,
06:11whose name was Queen,
06:13read from the Zulu Bible
06:15and she was short enough
06:19for me to look over her shoulder
06:20and she would read in Zulu
06:23what I had read previously in English.
06:26And by trying to follow her
06:28as she read it
06:29and remembering what I had read
06:30in my Bible in English,
06:32I learned to read and write.
06:35That stood me in good stead
06:36to this day,
06:37to that day,
06:38because when these two men
06:39were standing there,
06:40I said,
06:41this is what you guys are doing.
06:43God is seeing what you're doing.
06:46And the African,
06:48the South African blacks
06:49are very, very superstitious.
06:52Witchcraft is very, very relevant
06:55and very important
06:57in their societies.
06:57They will accept Jesus
06:59with the greatest of pleasure,
07:01but not to stop worshipping
07:02the witch doctors.
07:03They will carry on
07:04worshipping the both.
07:07Anyway,
07:07they said to me,
07:08they told me that I was lying
07:09and I didn't know
07:10what was written there
07:11and how could I understand it
07:13because I was a stupid white man.
07:15And I said,
07:16well, I'll read it to you
07:16and I read it to them.
07:18And immediately,
07:19they seemed to have lost
07:20all their bravado
07:21and they got up
07:22and they walked out saying,
07:24oh, it's a lucky day
07:24for you today.
07:25Well, it was.
07:26But the Lord saved me that day.
07:29And had I not been able
07:31to read and write,
07:32I would not have been able
07:33to convince them
07:34of the relevance
07:35and of the truth
07:39of that tract
07:40that I had given them.
07:41They could not read.
07:43They couldn't read,
07:44but I read it to them
07:45and it wasn't my words,
07:46it was what I had read to them
07:48which convinced them.
07:52And so later on,
07:53a year or two
07:55after that incident,
07:57I was driving
07:58in a 4x4 vehicle
08:00which was jumping
08:01out of first gear.
08:02The handbrake didn't work
08:03and I had to stop
08:04in a paddock
08:05to go and feed some bull.
08:07So I put it into first gear,
08:08got up to open the gate.
08:10The vehicle jumped
08:11out of its first gear
08:12and because it wasn't
08:15in gear now,
08:17it ran down the hill
08:18or a little way.
08:20I was knocked to the ground
08:22by the open door
08:23and the wheel grazed
08:25my ear as it went past me.
08:28So I'm here.
08:30Another incident
08:31which happened.
08:33Later on,
08:34I had another diving accident
08:36in Mallorca
08:37where I dived
08:37into a swimming pool
08:38and hit the bottom
08:39and nearly,
08:41I don't know,
08:42it was very, very serious
08:43because I saw lightning
08:45in my being.
08:47There was just these
08:48flashes of lightning
08:49and I don't know
08:50what happened
08:50to the point
08:51that my daughter
08:51who works for NHS
08:52who'd taken me
08:53on this holiday
08:54rushed me off
08:55for testing
08:56and for x-rays
08:57to see if there
08:58was any damage.
09:01My son is a miracle
09:02because I've got
09:04three children,
09:05Clinton, my eldest,
09:07where he is in Wendover
09:08at the moment.
09:09He's working as a plumber,
09:11as a boiler engineer.
09:13When he was about
09:14four years old,
09:15I was driving a tractor
09:18with other labourers
09:20that I had with me
09:21managing this farm
09:23and I had Clinton with me
09:24and he was on the running
09:25board of the tractor
09:26and we were going home
09:27about five o'clock
09:28in the evening.
09:29The sun was setting,
09:29it was starting to get cool
09:31and as we were going home,
09:34the purpose of the work
09:36we were doing
09:36was to fix the roads,
09:37the potholes in the roads.
09:39So I was on this tractor
09:40which had a front end
09:40load of buckets
09:41in the front of it
09:42and as we were going
09:42along the front wheel
09:43hit a little pothole
09:45and so the tractor
09:46did this
09:47and as it did that,
09:49it kicked Clinton
09:50off the running board
09:51because he was standing
09:52next to me
09:52on the running board.
09:53It threw him
09:54underneath the tractor
09:55and the back wheel
09:56went over him.
09:58He had tread marks
09:59on his head,
10:00on his ear,
10:01on his neck
10:01and then all the way
10:02down his arm.
10:04He didn't have
10:04one broken bone.
10:06We rushed him off
10:07to hospital
10:07and they examined him
10:09and they said,
10:10he's fine.
10:12he was bruised,
10:13he was sore
10:14but within a week
10:16or a bit longer
10:17maybe he was back
10:18to what he was
10:19running around.
10:20So what Andy's done
10:22by asking me now
10:23to give my testimony,
10:26these are the things
10:27that have built me up
10:28and made me
10:29into what I am today.
10:32It's a product
10:33of my life.
10:34I was married
10:35in 1987
10:37to my current wife
10:39who I proposed to
10:41after one week
10:42and we are still married.
10:44She laughed at me
10:45when I asked her
10:47and I felt a bit
10:48of a fool
10:48but she came back
10:49and she said,
10:49thank you,
10:50I will.
10:51We're still married.
10:52We have the three children
10:53and I feel I fulfill
10:58the criteria
11:00given to us
11:01in 1 Timothy
11:02chapter 3
11:03and verse 17
11:05and just to remind you
11:07of that
11:07and I'm always open
11:11to interpretation
11:12of this as well
11:13and if it is not so
11:14well then I'll have to put
11:15my hat of learning
11:17on again.

11:21this is a faithful saying
11:22if a man desires
11:23the position of a bishop
11:24he desires a good work.
11:26A bishop then
11:27must be blameless
11:27the husband of one wife
11:29temperate
11:29sober minded
11:30of good behavior
11:31hospitable
11:32able to teach
11:33not given to wine
11:35and not violent
11:36not greedy for money
11:37but gentle
11:38not quarrelsome
11:38not covetous
11:39one who rules
11:40his own house well
11:41having his children
11:42in submission
11:43with all reverence
11:44for if a man
11:45does not know
11:45how to rule
11:46his own house
11:47how will he take care
11:48of the church of God
11:49not a novice
11:51lest being puffed up
11:51with pride
11:52he fall into
11:53the same condemnation
11:54as the devil
11:55moreover
11:56he must have
11:57a good testimony
11:57among those
11:58who are outside
11:59lest he fall into
12:00reproach
12:01and the snare
12:02of the devil
12:03and so
12:05that is my aim
12:07is to be able
12:07to try to fulfill
12:08the word
12:09that God has given me
12:10after I was saved
12:11a few years later
12:12we had
12:13we had a wonderful
12:15anticipatory meeting
12:19in Anderberg
12:19southern Latale
12:20where we were
12:21this man
12:22is coming
12:23to the town
12:24and he knows
12:25when the Lord
12:25is coming
12:26and I had read
12:28a little bit
12:29over the time
12:30I hadn't
12:31known a lot
12:32because when I
12:32had got saved
12:33which I'll come to
12:34I was far away
12:36in the country
12:36there were no churches
12:37there
12:38there was nowhere
12:39to go
12:40to church
12:41and I wasn't
12:42left with a fellowship
12:44to go to
12:44I wasn't
12:45left with direction
12:46I had a Bible
12:47but I'd been
12:48reading this Bible
12:49and this Bible
12:51said no man
12:52knows the day
12:53nor there are
12:53I remember that
12:54and when this man
12:55started a speech
12:57and he came out
12:58with all his figures
12:58and his timings
12:59and everything
13:00I said to my wife
13:01now this
13:02this doesn't sound
13:03like what's in the Bible
13:04she says tell him
13:05tell him
13:05and of course
13:06you know
13:07I'm not a man
13:09to stand up
13:09and sort of
13:10impose on other people
13:11I'd rather stand back
13:12and let everybody else
13:13do the talking
13:14and I'm not a very
13:16sociable type of person
13:17in the world
13:18I don't have much
13:20to say to people
13:20in the world
13:21anymore at all
13:22however
13:23I've got my
13:24my strength together
13:26and I put up my hand
13:28and he said yes
13:29this was in question time
13:30and I said
13:31no man knows
13:32the day nor the hour
13:33when Jesus is coming
13:34how can you know
13:35the day or the hour
13:36and he said
13:37well you must be
13:38a bit of a fool
13:38you should have read
13:39the whole passage
13:40before you stand up
13:41and ask me questions
13:41like that
13:42those are basically
13:43his words
13:44of course
13:44that was
13:45that threw me
13:46as I just sat down
13:47and kept quiet again
13:48but those words
13:49went out through
13:51the community
13:51about this
13:52this would-be believer
13:54who had stood up
13:54and he challenged
13:55this man
13:55who had the time
13:56and the day
13:57and the hour
13:58when Jesus was coming
13:59well
14:00that must be
14:01a good 30 years ago
14:02and we're still waiting
14:03for Jesus to come
14:04so I was right
14:05that day
14:05this man wasn't
14:07and his name
14:08was Malcolm Isted
14:09I have never
14:09ever forgotten
14:10that name
14:11so I was saved
14:15I was
14:15the point also
14:17of bringing all
14:18these things up
14:18is my life
14:19was a boy's life
14:21we went fishing
14:23we went hunting
14:24we went down
14:25rivers that were swollen
14:26on tractor tubes
14:27and one time
14:28we had to jump off
14:29the tractor tube
14:29because a snake
14:30was swimming
14:30across the river
14:31so we got off
14:33and then we had to
14:33swim like crazy
14:34to get our tube back
14:36otherwise we'd have
14:37had to walk back
14:38to school
14:38this was all
14:39when we were
14:40boarding school
14:41but with all
14:44these things
14:44with school
14:45and you know
14:46all these incidents
14:48that happened
14:48and all the things
14:49that I did
14:50the hunting
14:50the fishing
14:51the shooting
14:52the things
14:53that I worked
14:54with and helping
14:55on the farm
14:56there was an emptiness
14:57there was just
14:58I'm doing what I have
15:00to do
15:00to take the time up
15:02I didn't
15:02I didn't quantify
15:04it as that
15:04but looking back
15:05looking back
15:07it was for the moment
15:08it was for the moment
15:09let's go fishing
15:10let's go shooting
15:11let's go and do this
15:12let's make this
15:13it was just for the moment
15:15and when it was done
15:16we'd look for
15:17some other activity
15:18to engage us
15:20as we keep going
15:21and just growing
15:22and life happens
15:23and we get angry
15:25with mum and dad
15:26and mum and dad
15:26got angry with us
15:27and got tired
15:29of doing the chores
15:29and milking the cows
15:31and making the cream
15:32and the butter
15:32and slaughtering the animals
15:33and doing the things
15:35that we had to do
15:35on a farm
15:36it was just chores
15:37it was just something
15:38to occupy the time
15:39always though
15:41there was
15:41an unknown to me
15:43an emptiness
15:44you did what you were
15:47expected to do
15:48because society
15:49expected you to do that
15:51and you grew up
15:52under the auspices
15:53of society
15:54I had not many friends
15:56at school
15:57and I think I was
15:57more times
15:58in the shooting range
15:59than I was
15:59spending time
16:01with my friends
16:01not shooting range
16:02shooting guns
16:03but shooting range
16:04with boxing gloves on
16:05because I was
16:05defending the honour
16:06of my family
16:08which came under attack
16:10often
16:10because believe it or not
16:12when I was at school
16:13it was 60 years
16:15after Britain
16:16was at war
16:17with South Africa
16:18the English
16:19against the Afrikaans
16:21I'm English
16:23I'm English
16:24born
16:25my mum was British
16:27my ancestors
16:29are Scottish
16:30but I grew up
16:31in South Africa
16:31and so when I went
16:33to school
16:34there were still
16:35very very raw wounds
16:37carried over
16:39from the Anglo-Boer War
16:40believe it or not
16:41the Anglo-Boer War
16:43when the English
16:44came into South Africa
16:45was
16:45123 years ago
16:51I grew up
16:52in the area
16:53where
16:54I went to school
16:55in the area
16:56where Winston Churchill
16:57was captured
16:57about 10 miles away
17:01from where he was captured
17:02and locked up
17:03Winston Churchill
17:04the towns that I lived in
17:05and had to do with
17:06General Buller
17:07Lord Harry Smith
17:10and Lady Smith
17:11Colenso
17:12the towns in South Africa
17:14in the area
17:15where I grew up
17:16were historically named
17:19for what happened
17:20between Britain
17:21and South Africa
17:23and so there is
17:24a knit
17:25a tie
17:27between the two countries
17:28it's slowly
17:29getting less
17:30and less
17:31as time goes by
17:32but there is
17:33this
17:34connection
17:35between the two countries
17:38and so
17:40I grew up
17:41in this lot
17:41and
17:42I
17:43I've always had
17:46this independent
17:47lone spirit
17:48and emptiness
17:49and when I got saved
17:51I was farming
17:51on a farm
17:52with no churches
17:54in sight
17:54the nearest church
17:55was about
17:5630 kilometers away
17:58on dirt roads
17:58very bad dirt roads
18:00far away
18:01in Underburg
18:02in the mountains
18:04the bigger churches
18:05were Peter Meritsburg
18:07two and a half
18:08hours drive away
18:09also
18:10bad weather
18:11and bad roads
18:12and so
18:13I
18:14I was saved
18:15one day
18:16when
18:16living on this farm
18:18called Rockley Lodge
18:19my fertilizer salesman
18:21whom I had not yet met
18:22because he had come
18:23to do the fertilizer
18:24analyses
18:25when I was not there
18:27I was told
18:28Alan is here
18:29to give you
18:30your fertilizer
18:30requirements
18:31for the season
18:32and I went up to him
18:33expecting to hear
18:34Ken
18:35here's our analysis
18:36this is what you're going
18:38to need
18:38for so many hectares
18:39you're going to need
18:40so many tons
18:41of such and such
18:41and such
18:42and such
18:42a fertilizer
18:42but that didn't happen
18:45he said
18:45Ken
18:46what's your relationship
18:47with Jesus
18:47right from little
18:50and I don't know why
18:51and I cannot explain it
18:52because I don't know
18:53how I was ever taught it
18:54I knew the Lord's Prayer
18:55and many many years
18:56I couldn't go to sleep
18:57unless I'd said
18:58the Lord's Prayer
18:59and that was it
18:59sometime
19:01when I was in high school
19:02there was an incident
19:03at the town hall
19:05we were invited to
19:06as boarders
19:06to go and listen
19:07I went up on the stage
19:08I cannot really remember
19:10but I think I actually
19:11gave my life to the Lord
19:12that day
19:12but
19:12it's a dream almost
19:15and I just carried on
19:16having forgotten
19:17all that
19:18but the Lord
19:19has kept me
19:19through all these incidents
19:20some life-threatening
19:23not so life-threatening
19:24but all life-changing
19:25things that have happened
19:26to me through life
19:28bringing me to here
19:29this day
19:29that man said to me
19:30this day
19:31that day
19:31what is your relationship
19:33with Jesus
19:34and I said to him
19:35I believe
19:36he said
19:37wonderful
19:37you believe
19:38Satan believes as well
19:40you're no different
19:41to the devil
19:42that shook me
19:43to the core
19:44because
19:44all of a sudden
19:46that emptiness
19:47which was in my soul
19:49which I didn't really
19:51acknowledge
19:51nor understand
19:52and if I did
19:53think of it at all
19:54it was quickly
19:55camouflaged by
19:56let's go shooting
19:57let's go hunting
19:58let's go down the river
19:59let's do something
19:59it was always camouflaged
20:01but now
20:02a nerve was touched
20:04the truth
20:05was brought to me
20:06the reality
20:07of life
20:08was suddenly brought to me
20:09and
20:10he told me
20:12about Jesus
20:12and he told me
20:15what Jesus
20:15had done
20:16and
20:17he ministered
20:18to me that day
20:19and I was
20:20overwhelmed
20:21by the words
20:23that he had brought
20:24and
20:26and those words
20:26were relevant
20:27because it's written
20:29to us
20:29in the book of Romans
20:30chapter 10
20:31and
20:33they were real words
20:34and I knew
20:35that they were true
20:36Romans chapter 10
20:37and verse 14
20:38says
20:38how shall they call
20:39on him in whom
20:40they have not believed
20:40how shall they believe
20:42in whom they have not heard
20:43how shall they hear
20:44without a preacher
20:45and how shall they preach
20:46unless they sent
20:47as it is written
20:48how beautiful
20:50of the feet
20:50of those who preach
20:51the gospel of peace
20:52who bring glad tidings
20:54of good things
20:55that
20:56that salesman
20:57that fertilizer salesman
20:59I believe
21:00he might have even
21:01been putting his job
21:02on the line
21:02because what fertilizer salesman
21:04is going to come
21:05and preach the gospel
21:05to you
21:06when he should be
21:06selling you fertilizer
21:07what would have happened
21:09if he'd gone back home
21:10and he said
21:10Ken has rejected the order
21:11I wasted my time
21:13with him
21:13but I took the order
21:15and
21:15I got given
