Barbara and Cosme are expected to impact shipping in the eastern Pacific. AccuWeather's Geoff Cornish explains the tropical activity brewing in the Pacific while the Atlantic remains quiet.
Transcript
00:00As you look at the big picture satellite loop here across the East Pacific and the Gulf, the Caribbean,
00:10things are very quiet in the Atlantic Basin here.
00:12We're kind of taking a big broad view here, and you can see the daily convection in Cuba.
00:16But there is very little going on.
00:18No tropical threats.
00:20In fact, we've actually removed our tropical potential for development here in the Western Caribbean for now.
00:25There's just nothing going on in the short term in the Atlantic.
00:27But in the Pacific, look at this.
00:29We've got two named storms on the map.
00:31We have Barbara, which became a hurricane today.
00:33Hurricane Barbara moving northwest.
00:36It will stay offshore.
00:37And then also Cosme.
00:39This is Cosme, tropical storm Cosme, a little farther out there.
00:42Looks a little more ragged here, but we do have some activity here in the East Pacific.
00:45Now, Barbara is the storm that we're focusing on a little more because it is closer to land.
00:49It's also a hurricane, first hurricane of the year for the East Pacific.
00:54And, again, this is not going to be lasting long.
00:56It won't be with us for too long because this water is pretty nippy.
01:00The ocean currents direct cooler water down along the coast parallel to the Baja California
01:05Peninsula, and that's going to chew this storm apart.
01:08Now, a little north of its footprint, you can see it's 60s.
01:10We look for water temperature to be 80-plus to support storms.
01:13It is admittedly a little farther south of Cabo San Lucas, but, again, you can see the flavor
01:18of even very southern latitudes way south of San Diego, 61, 65 degrees there.
01:24Pretty cool.
01:24Now, ocean water temperatures in the Atlantic are not our limiting factor.
01:28It's plenty warm out there.
01:29Ocean water temps are warm into the Atlantic Basin right now.
01:33Near average near Bermuda.
01:34If you're in the light blue, you're a little below average.
01:36Yellow, a little above average.
01:37We have some bigger dynamic changes here into the area off the northeast coast.
01:41But, again, there's not a whole lot cooking in the short term, but we do expect to see an active season.
01:47Remember, hurricane season goes all the way to the end of November, so we have plenty of time.
01:52And most active months, August, September, and October.
