AccuWeather's Geoff Cornish discusses the potential for tropical development in the eastern Pacific and gives an overview on the upcoming hurricane season.
Transcript
00:00We had a very slow start to the year for tropical activity anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere.
00:10In fact, it's been our slowest start in the Northern Hemisphere as a whole since 1973.
00:16So if you look back, 1973, there were no named storms anywhere between the North Indian Ocean,
00:22the West Pacific, where they call them typhoons, the East Pacific, or the North Atlantic Basin,
00:26until June 2nd when AVA in the East North Pacific formed.
00:30But we're not yet to June 2nd.
00:32This year, though, we're already in second place here because we're not going to see a named storm today.
00:37On today's date, back in 1984, we had Tropical Storm 1 form in the North Indian Ocean.
00:45And you go back to last year, the first named storm of the West Pacific's hurricane season formed.
00:51And back in 1983, Adolph formed in the East Pacific May 21st.
00:55May 17th, that was another slow start back in the Bay of Bengal.
00:58In the Northern Indian Ocean, there was the first storm of the year.
01:01So it's been remarkable to not see any storms.
01:03Typically, we'd have about four and a half by now between the North Indian Ocean and the West Pacific.
01:08So quiet so far, but that will soon change as we take a look at what's going on in the East Pacific.
01:13South of Mexico, this area of thunderstorms and, again, very disturbed weather, deep convection.
01:20This is likely to be the first named storm of the year for the Northern Hemisphere.
01:26And, again, later this week, we're likely to see the first East Pacific storm form.
01:30And it will take the name Alvin if this does continue on track as we expect it to be.
01:35Again, probably a tropical storm in a few days.
01:37Now, the east side of the Central American landmass takes us into the Caribbean, the Gulf, and the West Atlantic.
01:44So in the Northwest Atlantic, no signs of life yet.
01:46The first storm will be Andrea, and that may still be a few weeks away.
