The new rule affecting everyone in the UK with a driveway
Transcript
00:00New rules affecting everyone in the UK with a driveway have recently come into
00:04force. Drivers with an electric vehicle now no longer need to submit a planning
00:09application to install an EV charging point. The new rule, which only came into
00:13force on May 29th, also applies to public charging points and those at workplaces.
00:18The government says that its move to slash paperwork will make it much
00:22quicker and cheaper for EV drivers to install a private charging point and
00:26power up their cars at home. The change, it claims, will help more people save up
00:32to £1,100 a year by switching from a petrol or diesel car to an electric
00:36vehicle. Businesses will also be able to install new EV charging points faster and
00:41cheaper thanks to the relaxed planning rules, which it's hopeful to dramatically
00:45increase the number of sockets available to drivers across the country. The move
00:50comes after reports of planning permission for public charging points taking up to
00:53nine months to secure. The Department of Transport says there are now nearly 80,000
00:58public EV charging points available across the UK, with 3,000 added in April
01:02this year alone. It says EVs are getting cheaper all the time with two in five now
01:07priced under £20,000 and costing as little as 2p a mile to run. Most EVs also
01:13now have a range of nearly 300 miles, which is enough to get you from London to
01:17Newcastle on a single charge.
