With Progress 8 scores unavailable, Attainment 8 is now the primary metric for comparing schools based on GCSE performance.

Attainment 8 scores reflect pupil performance across eight subjects, including English, maths, EBacc subjects, and other qualifications, without considering prior learning. Individual subject grades are combined for a maximum score of 90, and a school's Attainment 8 score is the average of all pupils.

Dividing a school’s Attainment 8 score by ten reveals its average GCSE grade, providing valuable insight into academic achievement.

00:00Hello, my name's Amber Allett, and I'm a journalist specialising in education.
00:04The government has just released its brand new preliminary secondary school performance figures
00:09for 2025. But they look a little different this year, and likely so will any league tables which
00:16use them to compare schools by GCSE performance. This is because the Progress 8 scores have not
00:22been calculated due to test disruptions this year's cohort faced back during the pandemic.
00:27Instead, the default metric for comparing schools is now their Attainment 8 score.
00:33Here's how those work. While Progress 8 scores measure pupil progress from the end of primary
00:39school through to when they take their GCSEs, Attainment 8 scores show how pupils have performed
00:45without taking their starting points into account. Attainment 8 scores are calculated from up to 8
00:51grades per pupil. These include their English and Maths GCSE results, which are usually both
00:57double-weighted, three other EBAC subjects like sciences, languages, history, or geography,
01:03and three other subjects or approved qualifications. Using the new 9 to 1 grading scale, the number
01:10grades learners got on each subject are then added together for a maximum score of 90. This also
01:16means that if you divide them by 10, you'll get a pupil's average grade. The Attainment 8 score
01:22each school has will be the average score of all pupils across the year group. Dividing it by 10 can also
01:29show you that school's average GCSE grade.
