00:00Hello, my name is Amber Ellett, and I'm a journalist specialising in science.
00:04You've probably noticed that fruits and vegetables which are in season,
00:07or ready to be harvested at a particular time of year,
00:10tend to be considerably cheaper at the grocery store.
00:14You may also have heard that opting to buy and eat this in-season produce is better for the environment,
00:19but how exactly isn't always clear.
00:22Here are the environmental advantages of eating the right produce at the right time of year.
00:26Buying in-season fruits and vegetables at the supermarket can mean they were more likely to have been grown locally,
00:34rather than shipped over from another country where weather conditions were right.
00:39This can help cut back on something called food miles.
00:42These represent the distance food needs to be transported from its producer to you, the consumer.
00:48It also reduces the need for plastic packaging,
00:51and the National Trust says that both contribute to climate change.
00:54Fruits and veggies available out of season have often travelled by air,
00:59which creates around 10 times more carbon emissions than transporting them via road.
01:04But this fuel burned to physically transport food is just one part of the problem.
01:10In order to grow things so that they're ready when you want them,
01:13more energy is often used to create the right growing conditions.
01:17This can include extra heating or electrical irrigation systems.
01:21After all, growing tomatoes in a hot greenhouse in December
01:25is going to require a lot more energy than growing them in their natural season,
01:29which is during the summer.
01:30Just a bit of a terrificности farm that it's called to support people in new languages in the Karen,
01:40which is an elementary school- little flowering,
01:43which means they're ready when they're on a particular level of a์,
01:44which means that the children areacks of the field of a hydrogen,
01:46which means that there's more greater danger ofしまاز..
01:48The darkahan believe can be shown in the future,
01:49but the storytelling itself won't be shown in this regard.
01:52The music będą i know the most crucial part of the world is located along with China.
01:54If you've already produced at least one part of the past time,
01:56its marine sinners is a opportuna billion- narrower.
