02:14Good evening, everyone.
02:15Thanks so much for joining us on this Sunday.
02:17I'm Lindsay Davis.
02:18We do begin tonight with breaking news.
02:20Police are responding to what the FBI is calling a targeted terror attack at an outdoor pedestrian mall in Boulder, Colorado.
02:27Local law enforcement and FBI agents are on the scene.
02:30Several injuries have been reported and authorities say some may have been set on fire.
02:35The governor of Colorado released a statement saying he's closely monitoring what he described as a heinous act of terror.
02:42Police have evacuated several blocks in and around the mall and are asking people to avoid the area.
02:48A suspect is in police custody.
02:50This happening during a pro-Israel demonstration.
02:53ABC's Mola Lange leads us off tonight.
02:55Boulder police responding to calls of people being set on fire during a peaceful demonstration in support of Israeli hostages.
03:03There's multiple mixed reports about if people are on fire or not.
03:06We're getting lots of 911 calls.
03:08The group meets regularly and is affiliated with the organization Run for Their Lives.
03:13One of their leaders says a man was waiting for them and began throwing a box of bottles at them,
03:18saying several people were set on fire.
03:21One, an elderly woman.
03:22He yelled expletives about the Jewish people, about Zionists, free Palestine and whatnot.
03:27It reminded me of what happened in Washington, D.C. a couple weeks ago.
03:30These images of a man holding what appears to be two Molotov cocktails before being tackled by police.
03:36Authorities say they have a suspect in custody, FBI personnel assisting local police on the scene.
03:41Director Cash Patel says the agency is investigating the incident as an act of terror and targeted violence.
03:47But local police are not going that far, saying it's too early to characterize what kind of attack it is.
03:53Well, Lindsay, House Speaker Mike Johnson condemning the attack tonight, calling it heartbreaking and deeply disturbing.
03:59And we're told President Trump has been briefed about the incident, Lindsay.
04:03Mola, thank you.
04:04Now to the air quality alerts as the wildfire smoke from Canada blankets skies across the upper Midwest.
04:10A state of emergency in Canada as thousands are forced to evacuate their homes.
04:14Firefighters are battling more than 170 wildfires.
04:18That smoke is casting a haze over the skies in places like Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota and Michigan are under air quality alerts.
04:25And the southern plains and central U.S. are bracing for yet another round of dangerous storms.
04:30Here's ABC's Christiane Cordero.
04:31Tonight, more than 170 active wildfires across Canada, forming dense smoke visible from space as it drifts deep into the U.S., air quality considered unhealthy across parts of the upper Midwest.
04:46That wildfire smoke continuing to be an issue even into Monday.
04:49Hazy skies over millions of people from Duluth to Des Moines.
04:53For parts of North Dakota and Minnesota, officials telling residents to keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors.
05:01And if possible, run central air conditioning.
05:04It's a big fire, so it's pretty bad.
05:06The massive wildfires burning hundreds of thousands of acres, prompting the U.S. to deploy more than 150 firefighters and air tankers to help battle the flames.
05:16The smoke now making its way into the south just days after tornadoes ripped through.
05:22An EF-2 touched down in Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service, killing one person and injuring at least 14.
05:29And another tornado in Henry County, Georgia, injuring two.
05:33Officials there now changing the county's severe weather alert system after several residents said they didn't hear the outdoor sirens or get warnings on their phones until after the tornado hit.
05:45Neighboring states getting heavy rain and wind now bracing for hurricane season, officially starting today.
05:53Lindsay, NOAA predicts a more active than usual hurricane season.
05:57And some scientists are concerned staffing cuts by the Trump administration could impact the agency's ability to forecast and prepare for future storms.
06:07Lindsay?
06:07Christiane, thank you.
06:08Let's get right to meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station, WABC.
06:13Hi, Danny.
06:13Tell us where this smoke is heading.
06:16Lindsay, the upper Midwest has been stuck under the smoky haze for several days now, and it hangs around into the start of the work week.
06:22Today, the worst of the smoke stretching from Fargo across the state of Minnesota, where an air quality alert is still in effect.
06:28Tomorrow, it shifts east across the Great Lakes down into Illinois.
06:31But a new system taking shape in the central U.S. could finally help push that smoke back north while also fueling severe storms.
06:38Tonight, that threat focused in parts of Texas with damaging wind and large hail possible from Houston up to Dallas on Monday, targeting the plains, then shifting east from Texas to Wisconsin on Tuesday.
06:48East of this storm, a big warm-up is the weather story.
06:50The East Coast turning up the heat by midweek.
06:52Lindsay?
06:53About to feel a lot like summer.
06:55Danny, thank you.
06:56Overseas now to Ukraine, launching a massive drone strike on Russian airfields.
07:00The attack allegedly destroyed more than 40 Russian planes.
07:04It took more than a year to execute and was personally supervised by Ukrainian President Zelensky.
07:09This is a new round of ceasefire talks are set to start on Monday in Turkey.
07:13Here's ABC's Marcus Moore.
07:14Tonight, Ukraine landing a punishing blow against Russia with a surprise drone attack, dubbed Operation Spiderweb, targeting key airfields and strategic nuclear-capable bombers deep inside Russia.
07:30More than 40 aircraft ablaze after the highly sophisticated operation was launched Sunday.
07:36Ukrainian sources giving ABC News details of the attack that was a year and a half in the planning.
07:41The drones were transported to Russia inside what looked to be shipping containers, with retractable roofs that could be opened remotely.
07:49The drones, seen here flying out on their mission, the Ukrainians did not inform the U.S. ahead of time.
07:55The high-tech planes worth billions of dollars now in ruins and will take years to replace.
08:01It looks like around 30 percent or higher of their strategic bombers were destroyed.
08:08Some of these drones were as low as $500, taking out million-dollar aircraft.
08:13It was a blow tactically, it was a blow strategically, and it was a blow politically.
08:19Elsewhere in Russia, officials said explosions from an alleged terror attack caused two bridges to collapse, one causing a train derailment.
08:26Russian officials said at least seven people were killed and more than 60 injured.
08:32Earlier, Russia launching strikes of its own across Ukraine, the largest air assault since the war began.
08:39At least 12 people killed and dozens hurt.
08:42The apparent escalation in this war comes as President Trump has criticized Putin's attacks on civilians
08:47and grown increasingly impatient with both sides, threatening to walk away from peace talks scheduled to resume in Turkey tomorrow.
08:55Lindsey, a quick word on Ukraine's surprise strike.
08:58Russia calling it a terrorist attack.
09:00And tonight, President Zelensky claimed that the quote-unquote office for this operation was right next door to one of the headquarters for Russia's security service.
09:08Lindsey.
09:09All this on the eve of renewed peace talks.
09:11Marcus, thank you.
09:13Dozens were killed and hundreds injured near an aid distribution center in Gaza.
09:17Health officials and witnesses say Israeli forces opened fire on the crowds.
09:21Let's bring in ABC's chief foreign correspondent Ian Pannell in Tel Aviv.
09:25Ian, what are you learning tonight?
09:27Yeah, Lindsey, I mean, lots of confusion about who carried out this attack.
09:30It happened near a U.S.-run food distribution site in southern Gaza.
09:35Now, aid agencies calling it a massacre.
09:37But as I say, unclear who pulled the trigger.
09:40Hamas and eyewitnesses from the scene accusing Israeli troops of shooting at people.
09:45The U.S. aid company that actually runs this site denying that there was an incident at all.
09:49But hospitals in the area overrun with patients with gunshot wounds.
09:54Israel conducting an investigation, a provisional investigation, later saying that its troops didn't fire at civilians in or near this site.
10:02But at the same time, an Israeli military official telling ABC News its troops did fire warning shots towards what it calls several suspects in the vicinity,
10:12while also insisting that there's no connection between the two.
10:16A senior Israeli source, though, blaming Hamas for the attack.
10:19Lindsey?
10:20Ian, thank you.
10:21Back here in the U.S., the urgent search for answers after a deadly mass shooting at a house party in North Carolina.
10:27One person is dead and 11 others injured.
10:30Authorities say nearly 100 people had gathered, mostly teens.
10:34Just moments ago, police said at least 80 shots were fired and there may be more than one shooter.
10:39Here's ABC's Morgan Norwood.
10:40Tonight, investigators swarming a North Carolina neighborhood after a deadly mass shooting.
10:46One dead after a house party full of high schoolers turned fatal.
10:5011 others injured.
10:51And today, investigators revealing they're looking for multiple suspects.
10:54Our investigation indicates more than one shooter was involved in the incident.
10:59We are still working to determine when they arrived, how they arrived, and what the reasoning was.
11:04Police today identifying the man who was killed as 58-year-old Sean Patrick Hood.
11:09One official telling ABC News police responded earlier to a noise complaint.
11:14Shots fired after a dispute.
11:15The call coming in just before 1 a.m. from a home in Hickory, just northwest of Charlotte.
11:21Two patients have been shot on the leg at the door.
11:22The front patient here has been shot and the chest inside.
11:26EMS finding victim after victim.
11:28Emergency crews desperately calling for backup.
11:31We're overwhelmed out here.
11:33I will need both aircraft.
11:34Outside, frantic parents scrambling to find their children.
11:38I've had probably about 10, 15 cars trying to pull up here asking for kids.
11:43It's mostly parents looking for children.
11:44Authorities say as many as 100 people, mostly teens, were inside when those shots rang out.
11:49It appears to us that both pistols and rifles were involved.
11:52Police say at least 80 shots fired during the chaos.
11:55Two of the injured remain in critical condition.
11:58And, Lindsay, authorities don't have anyone in custody just yet,
12:00but they say they believe the suspects were targeting someone inside that House party.
12:05Tonight, the FBI joining that investigation.
12:07Lindsay?
12:08Morgan, thank you.
12:09Now to politics and the battle over President Trump's so-called Big Beautiful Bill.
12:13Republicans are squabbling over whether it will boost the economy or add trillions to the nation's debt.
12:19Here's ABC's senior White House correspondent, Selina Wang.
12:22Tonight, President Trump's allies defending his so-called One Big Beautiful Bill against opposition from fellow Republicans.
12:29The One Big Beautiful Bill is a big first step to provide relief for the American people.
12:34Speaker Johnson now urging his Senate colleagues to get on board after the bill narrowly passed the House by just one vote.
12:41But they're pushing back.
12:42Well, the math doesn't really add up.
12:44Budget hawk Senator Rand Paul says there are enough unconvinced Republicans to block its passage.
12:50I think there are four of us at this point,
12:52and I would be very surprised if the bill at least is not modified in a good direction.
12:57At issue, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicting the bill could add $3.8 trillion to the federal deficit over eight years.
13:06But Johnson flat-out rejecting that.
13:09It's not going to add to the debt.
13:10The bill would extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts, end federal taxes on tips and overtime pay,
13:16spend nearly $50 billion to resume construction of a border wall, and slash funding for Medicaid.
13:22They're cutting Medicaid, throwing 15 million people off their health care in order to fund a tax cut for the super wealthy and for corporations.
13:32That is just fundamentally immoral.
13:35Republican Senator Joni Ernst facing backlash after she dismissed those concerns at a town hall in Iowa.
13:41People are not, well, we all are going to die.
13:45We are the same for heaven's ends.
13:48Ernst then giving a sarcastic apology on social media.
13:53So, I apologize.
13:55And I'm really, really glad that I did not have to bring up the subject of the tooth fairy as well.
14:03And, Lindsay, the CBO estimates these Medicaid cuts could leave more than 8 million Americans without health insurance.
14:08But the White House insists no one is losing their coverage.
14:12Despite all this pushback, Republicans are aiming to get this bill to President Trump's desk by July 4th.
14:17Lindsay, Selena Wang from the White House.
14:21Outraged tonight after a Massachusetts high school student was detained by ICE agents on his way to volleyball practice.
14:27And tonight, the governor of Massachusetts is demanding answers.
14:30Here's ABC's Ike Jachi.
14:32Tonight, shock and sadness in Milford, Massachusetts.
14:35An 18-year-old high school student, now in ICE detention, according to school officials.
14:41Friends of the team telling ABC affiliate WCVB, agents arrested him early Saturday morning as he was driving to volleyball practice with teammates.
14:50He is not a criminal.
14:53He's a member of his community and he's never done anything wrong.
14:59His coach describing the junior as exceptional.
15:02Our athlete who was detained, it may be the friendliest person in the school.
15:08Every day, no matter how he felt, he always had a smile on his face.
15:13Friends and family telling our affiliate Milford is the only home the detained student has ever known after moving there at six years old.
15:20Milford's superintendent writing in a statement, we are all distraught by this news and that the school district plays no part in immigration enforcement and supports all students, including those who are immigrants to the United States.
15:34Milford's local police chief also saying his department was not involved in the arrest.
15:39Today, the community gathering for a peaceful protest.
15:43Now on graduation day for the school, the Massachusetts governor demanding that ICE provide immediate information about why he was arrested, where he is, and how his due process is being protected.
15:56And writing, the Trump administration continues to create fear in our communities and it's making us all less safe.
16:03Lindsay, this arrest comes as the Trump administration is aggressively expanding its immigration enforcement powers across the country.
16:10On Friday, the Supreme Court, temporarily allowing the administration to end protections for over 500,000 immigrants enrolled in the Biden era program.
16:19Lindsay?
16:19Ike, thank you.
16:20Now to what police are calling the suspicious deaths of two high school campers in Arizona.
16:25Their bodies were discovered in a remote area of the Phoenix area earlier this week.
16:29Here's ABC's Zareen Shah with the new details coming in tonight.
16:33Tonight, an urgent investigation into two high school students found shot dead in an Arizona National Forest.
16:40Maricopa County Sheriff's Office now launching a homicide investigation, saying the circumstances surrounding their deaths are being treated as suspicious.
16:49He was just a really nice guy.
16:51The bodies of 18-year-old Pandora Julesrud and her 17-year-old friend were found early Tuesday by sheriff deputies near Mount Ord,
16:59a remote area northeast of Phoenix known for camping.
17:02Their community in shock, grieving, and demanding answers, leaving flowers, candles, and messages at a mountain vista they say was special to the teens.
17:12I'm really sad.
17:13It's like it doesn't really feel real.
17:16Pandora's mom sharing this image of her hiking, calling her a bright light in this world, who lived life in a big way.
17:24Officials are asking anyone with any information to come forward.
17:28Crisis counselors and psychologists are also being made available at the school.
17:32Lindsay.
17:33Zareen, thank you.
17:34Still much more ahead on World News tonight this Sunday, including a dangerous incident at a major airport.
17:39How a toddler ended up on a luggage conveyor belt.
17:42And what's black and white and running wild on the interstate?
17:46How a zebra brought traffic to a standstill.
17:49Next tonight, a toddler was rescued from a dangerous situation at Newark Airport in New Jersey, thanks to some quick thinking by two officers.
17:58The two-year-old had stepped onto a baggage conveyor belt Wednesday as the child's mother was booking a flight.
18:03The officers then jumped onto the conveyor belt themselves and found the toddler just ahead of the baggage x-ray machine.
18:10The child was not harmed.
18:11When we come back, the urgent search for an escapee, all covered in stripes.
18:18To the index, tonight the southern U.S. may be in for a rare treat.
18:23Scientists say it could be possible to see the green, pink, and purple northern lights as far south as Oklahoma or Alabama.
18:29That's due to a geomagnetic storm that causes charged particles from the sun to interact with the Earth's magnetic field.
18:35And in Rutherford County, Tennessee, the sheriff's office put out an alert for a zebra.
18:42Yes, a zebra.
18:43It was apparently someone's pet and broke free on Saturday.
18:46Deputies closed down I-24 for a short time.
18:49The zebra disappeared into some woods and, at last word, has not yet been found.
18:54When we come back, America Strong.
18:56A young graduate takes the most important steps of his life.
19:01Finally tonight, America Strong.
19:03Four months ago, 18-year-old Will Witten suffered a serious spinal cord injury in an accident while driving near Shreveport, Louisiana.
19:11Resolved to walk by graduation day, Will began intensive rehab, and it led to this magical moment at the Haughton High School commencement.
19:20Will's steps were priceless, leading him, no doubt, to a brighter future.
19:24GMA, first thing in the morning.
19:25David Muir right back here tomorrow night.
19:27I'm Lindsay Davis in New York.
19:28Have a great evening.
