00:00:29all. Trade war whiplash. Less than 24 hours after a federal panel blocked most
00:00:35of President Trump's sweeping tariffs and appeals court rules they can remain in

00:01:13a workplace that included physical and sexual violence. Summer rip current warning.
00:01:19The current can pull you to the left. It can pull you to the right. It can also spin you in a circle.
00:01:23Victor Akendo went into the water to try out the new expert advice to get out of one.
00:01:28Plus how to spot a rip current to avoid danger in the first place.
00:01:32Not so free to move about the cabin. The new find some airline passengers may encounter.
00:01:40What you need to watch out for.
00:01:45Now let's all of us take a deep breath.
00:01:49I did not help at all.
00:01:53There's no phasing Faison except when he won.
00:02:00You are the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion.
00:02:06Somebody peel him off the floor.
00:02:10The new 13 year old National Spelling Bee Champion joins us live. You'll never guess what word
00:02:15he got right. And how do you spell rebound Jalen Brunson and the Knicks win.
00:02:24Live from Times Square. It's Friday. Good morning America.
00:02:32Good morning America. What a night. The Garden was rocking last night.
00:02:38You were there for all of it Michael.
00:02:40I'm regretting it right now.
00:02:41I'm going to be honest with you. Good thing you did that sleep banking earlier this week.
00:02:45We have a very busy Friday morning including new music from Miley Cyrus overnight.
00:02:51Plus we have a wonderful Disney performance coming up all over the world.
00:02:55You're going to bring a story of how one couple paid off what $220,000 in debt.
00:02:58Huge debt and they did it in five years. It's a really remarkable story with lessons for all of us.
00:03:03Wow. Okay, but we're going to begin with severe weather, severe storms that are taking aim at the east coast this morning
00:03:08after the south was slammed with dangerous weather, including a fast-moving tornado.
00:03:13Ginger is tracking it all for us. Good morning, Ginger.
00:03:15Hey, good morning. So the tornado that did the damage behind me was just south of Atlanta,
00:03:19but it was one of eight reported tornadoes from New Mexico and Texas over to Florida.
00:03:24This one, a stark and brazen reminder.
00:03:26They were only in the level one out of five for severe storms.
00:03:29About how quickly even a thunderstorm can change your life.
00:03:33Severe storms sweeping across the southeast.
00:03:36Is that a tornado? Yep.
00:03:38In Georgia, this tornado stopping a couple in their tracks as it crossed I-75 south of Atlanta.
00:03:44We're finding debris all over the place.
00:03:47People in this Henry County neighborhood describing how quickly the tornado tore through.
00:03:51It almost sounded like thunder and lightning, but it had more of an impact, shaking walls.
00:03:55I ran for the closet and took cover. I got all my hands and knees, covered my head and just started praying.
00:04:00This is all that's left of actor Trey Cheney from The Wire's home. He and his 18-year-old son, Malachi, were sucked out of their house without warning.
00:04:10I survived the tornado. My son, he survived. At 3 o'clock today, a split second, my house is gone. I just got out of the hospital. I got this bruise on my head. I wish I could replace the pain with my son.
00:04:26Cheney's son taken to the ICU in critical condition. The actor posting an emotional video after going back to the scene and crawling through the debris that was his home to find his phone.
00:04:37We survived it. But this is, from watching your house be built from the ground up to five years later, everything gone.
00:04:49Such a good reminder that we really have to take this time of year. When we see these repetitive, I show you this map all the time, but remember that this is the area that's going to see it today.
00:04:58We wanted to time it out. Atlanta, I'd say after the noon hour, be ready, have two ways of getting warnings, making Columbia, Charlotte, Raleigh between 3 and 5 p.m.
00:05:07So this is kind of an early afternoon event. It's going to blow through, and by tonight, it's all gone.
00:05:11Now, that's the severe part of it, from Richmond and parts of Maryland down through Charlotte and South Carolina, even into Alabama and very north Florida.
00:05:19But look what happens on the north end. This is a flash flood alert.
00:05:22So this is where we're going to see this storm kind of slow down. Heavy rains will come through.
00:05:26A flood watch from Charlottesville through Washington, D.C. and Baltimore up to Philadelphia.
00:05:31This is late tonight, so do not drive into the water. We could end up with two to four inches and some really gusty winds.
00:05:38When you even have a 45-mile-per-hour wind, you've had three inches of rain, you can take down trees, too. So watch that tonight.
00:05:43Raining weekend up here. OK, Ginger, thanks very much.
00:05:45We've got the latest now in the battle over President Trump's tariffs.
00:05:48A federal court blocked most of his sweeping tariffs on China and other countries as illegal,
00:05:53but an appeals court has agreed to temporarily keep the tariffs in place.
00:05:56Chief White House correspondent Mary Bruce has the story. Good morning, Mary.
00:06:00Good morning, George. Well, this trade war continues to be a real roller coaster,
00:06:03but this morning, for now, Trump's tariffs are back on while these court challenges play out.
00:06:08But all of this is only adding to that uncertainty being felt by small businesses, consumers, and Wall Street.
00:06:14This morning, trade war whiplash. An appeals court ruling the president's sweeping tariffs can continue for now
00:06:21while the courts fight this out. The decision coming less than 24 hours after a federal panel
00:06:27blocked most of Trump's tariffs, saying he doesn't have the authority to do this.
00:06:32The White House now appealing that decision while adamant that they have other avenues to carry out Trump's trade agenda.
00:06:38As far as we're concerned, our trade agenda is moving forward.
00:06:41In April, Trump bypassed Congress to declare a national emergency and impose his so-called reciprocal tariffs
00:06:47on nearly every U.S. trading partner. But that federal panel, including judges appointed by Reagan, Obama, and Trump,
00:06:54ruling that those tariffs are unlawful, that using a national emergency declaration exceeds any tariff authority
00:07:01delegated to the president. And yesterday, yet another federal judge ruled the tariffs were likely illegal,
00:07:06finding the president does not have the power to unilaterally impose tariffs to reorder the global economy.
00:07:14But for now, these tariffs are allowed to continue as the appeals process plays out,
00:07:18while Wall Street small business owners and American consumers ride out this roller coaster.
00:07:24The president's top economic advisor urging investors not to read too much into the on-again, off-again tariffs.
00:07:30If there are little hiccups here and there because of decisions that activist judges make, then it shouldn't just concern you at all.
00:07:37But retailers like Walmart, Macy's, and Ford, among those already signaling there will be some price hikes,
00:07:44because U.S. companies ultimately pay for these tariffs.
00:07:47Now, Trump has been using these staggering tariffs, or the threat of them, to try and force countries to negotiate new trade deals.
00:07:54This morning, the White House insists that those talks do continue, but there's no question the future of Trump's trade war is now in doubt,
00:08:00and likely ultimately to be decided by the Supreme Court. George?
00:08:03Okay, Mary, and on another front, RFK Jr.'s released a report.
00:08:06They call it a Make America Healthy Again report, but it was riddled with errors.
00:08:11Yeah, George, some of the citations in this report are really garbled
00:08:14and appear to bear the hallmark of having been created by artificial intelligence.
00:08:17This sweeping report, led by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,
00:08:21outlined what the administration believes are the root causes of childhood disease.
00:08:25But the footnotes include numerous errors.
00:08:27Some citations include the wrong authors.
00:08:30Others cite to studies that don't exist at all.
00:08:32Now, the White House says the mistakes are due to, quote, formatting issues and that they are being corrected.
00:08:37The press secretary is stressing that they do not, quote, negate the substance of the report.
00:08:41George?
00:08:42Mary Bruce, thanks very much. Rebecca?
00:08:43Okay, George, thank you.
00:08:44We turn now to growing ethics questions concerning the president and his relationship with cryptocurrency.
00:08:51Overnight, the SEC dismissing a lawsuit against a major crypto exchange.
00:08:56Our chief investigative correspondent, Aaron Katursky, has the latest.
00:08:59And, Aaron, this was one of the last enforcements of crypto regulations.
00:09:03Now it's gone.
00:09:05It sure is, Rebecca.
00:09:07And it's the latest sign that the Trump administration is turning away from crypto enforcement.
00:09:12And it happens to coincide with a benefit to the Trump family.
00:09:16The Securities and Exchange Commission dropping its lawsuit against Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange.
00:09:24Ending one of the last remaining crypto enforcement actions from the prior administration, which had accused Binance of mishandling customer money and other violations.
00:09:32Now, the dismissal comes days after Binance began listing USD1.
00:09:38This is a cryptocurrency launched by World Liberty Financial, the crypto firm started by President Trump's family.
00:09:44This month, World Liberty Financial has also announced the United Arab Emirates would invest in Binance using USD1, giving Trump a hand in a $2 billion deal.
00:09:56And critics say perhaps blurring the lines further between the president's policies and his private business.
00:10:03Michael?
00:10:05All right.
00:10:06Thank you, Aaron.
00:10:06We're going to turn now to thousands of students waiting to learn their fate as the president tries to prevent international students from enrolling at Harvard.
00:10:14Senior White House correspondent Selena Wang has the latest for us.
00:10:17And Selena, the university, they won a temporary victory.
00:10:19Good morning.
00:10:22Hey, good morning, Michael.
00:10:23Yeah, that's right.
00:10:24Harvard won a major victory, at least for now, with that federal judge blocking Trump's ban on international students.
00:10:30But the administration is now pursuing an aggressive new strategy that could impact schools across this country.
00:10:37This morning, a reprieve for Harvard University.
00:10:40A federal judge blocking the president's ban on international students, at least for now.
00:10:46This year's commencement coinciding with that legal victory over the Trump administration.
00:10:50Members of the class of 2025, from down the street, across the country, and around the world.
00:11:04Around the world, just as it should be.
00:11:09The ruling is only temporary, and thousands of international students are still in limbo.
00:11:15We got a good decision from the courts today, but we know that this is going to be a long legal battle.
00:11:20And now a dramatic new escalation that could impact universities across the country.
00:11:25Secretary of State Marco Rubio announcing the U.S. will work to aggressively revoke visas of Chinese students,
00:11:31including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields.
00:11:36The Trump administration has already accused Harvard of failing to confront anti-Semitic harassment
00:11:42and claims the school as coordinated with the Chinese Communist Party.
00:11:46Allegations Harvard denies.
00:11:48Former ambassador to China Nicholas Burns, now a Harvard professor, telling us there's already a rigorous vetting process.
00:11:55Those who are a security risk should not have a visa, but that probably excludes the vast majority of the applicants
00:12:03and the vast majority of the 277,000 Chinese students in the United States.
00:12:08But it's unclear how many Chinese students could be impacted by that State Department announcement.
00:12:14And as for Harvard, this legal battle continues with billions of dollars in federal funds frozen.
00:12:20A hearing on that is scheduled in July.
00:12:22George?
00:12:23Selina Wang, thanks.
00:12:24Now to body cam video of a man opening fire shooting two Ohio police officers during a traffic stop.
00:12:29The officers are in stable condition.
00:12:30The suspect on the run, Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas, has the story.
00:12:34This morning, the urgent manhunt for a suspect after this traffic stop in Ohio erupts in gunfire.
00:12:41It's all caught on this police body camera as the officers in Columbus, Ohio, approach a vehicle just before 7 p.m. Wednesday.
00:12:52Then a passenger jumps out and takes off.
00:12:56There's a chase.
00:12:57Then the passenger trips, turns around and opens fire, hitting both officers.
00:13:05Check my.
00:13:06Officer down, officer down.
00:13:07I'm hit.
00:13:08I'm hit.
00:13:09The other officer, diving for cover.
00:13:12Just for it.
00:13:13Police also releasing the surveillance video showing the passenger turn and fire.
00:13:18That passenger, identified by police, as 21-year-old Devontae Dixon.
00:13:23He's now facing charges of attempted murder and felony assault.
00:13:26We still got a guy that's presumably armed and dangerous.
00:13:30He clearly has no regard for law enforcement or anybody else.
00:13:33Police are grateful that the officers are in stable condition after one of them was initially critically wounded.
00:13:40According to the Gun Violence Archive, 134 law enforcement officers have been injured so far this year by gunfire.
00:13:47Rebecca?
00:13:47All right, Pierre.
00:13:49We're going to turn now to the FBI.
00:13:51Offering a new reward for information in the expanding manhunt for the former Arkansas police chief and convicted murderer,
00:13:58Faith Abubeh is on the scene for us.
00:14:00Good morning, Faith.
00:14:03Good morning to you, Rebecca.
00:14:04There's a growing sense of urgency to try to get the former police chief back behind bars as quickly as possible.
00:14:10In fact, as people are driving through this area this morning, they're being handed these flyers from the FBI,
00:14:16showing there's up to $10,000 on the table for information leading to his arrest.
00:14:21Search crews are still scouring wooded areas, abandoned houses, even caves trying to locate the 56-year-old.
00:14:27We saw a school bus yesterday being stopped at a checkpoint as authorities continue looking for the fugitive they say is armed and dangerous.
00:14:35The former police chief was serving decades for murder and rape.
00:14:39He was caught on surveillance video on Sunday walking out of this prison in a makeshift uniform.
00:14:44Investigators say a guard opened a secured gate for him because they thought he was an officer.
00:14:49In the meantime, though, in Louisiana, two inmates are still on the run after eight of them, or ten altogether,
00:14:55escaped that prison two weeks ago, and now officials have raised the reward in that case as well.
00:15:00$50,000 each for the remaining inmates, Antoine Massey and Derek Groves.
00:15:06George.
00:15:06Okay, Faith, thank you.
00:15:07We're going to go overseas now to Israel.
00:15:09And the possibility of a ceasefire in the war with Hamas in Gaza.
00:15:12Chief Foreign Correspondent Ian Pannell is in Tel Aviv.
00:15:14Good morning, Ian.
00:15:15Yeah, good morning, George.
00:15:18President Trump and Special Envoy Steve Witkos submitting this new ceasefire and hostage release plan with Israeli backing.
00:15:25The idea is a 60-day ceasefire, the release of 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 others.
00:15:31In exchange, Israel would release some Palestinian prisoners, withdraw its forces to a buffer zone, and allow more vital aid in.
00:15:38Now, Hamas is reviewing the documents, yet to give a formal response, but it seems doubtful it's going to be acceptable, above all because it wants a commitment to end the war for good.
00:15:48Overnight, Israel again bombing Gaza, scenes of desperation on the ground as people clamor for this desperately short food aid.
00:15:56Israel broke the last ceasefire, remember, in early March, and has been bombing since then.
00:16:01But international pressure on Israel from the U.S. and others has been growing for an end to the war.
00:16:07But for now, though, the bombing, the death, and the desperation continues.
00:16:11Guys, that ceasefire can't come soon enough.
00:16:14We cannot agree more enough with that than that there, Ian.
00:16:18Thank you so much.
00:16:19Can't come soon enough.
00:16:20We're going to turn now to the NBA playoffs.
00:16:22We'll read with here.
00:16:24The Knicks are still in it to win it.
00:16:26They sure are.
00:16:26Good morning.
00:16:27Where'd you get those pants, brother?
00:16:28Those orange pants last night?
00:16:30Special delivery.
00:16:31Yeah, custom for Strahan.
00:16:33Bye, Strahan.
00:16:33You were looking good.
00:16:34So were the Knicks.
00:16:34George, as I've been saying all along, teams that go down 3-1 in the playoffs, no, no, no.
00:16:41They come back 4.4% of the time.
00:16:44That's what we're focused on this time.
00:16:46Everyone's following these numbers.
00:16:47Yeah, the Eastern Conference Finals live on.
00:16:49Madison Square Garden absolutely rocking last night, as Michael can attest to.
00:16:53The Knicks, in what could be their final home game of the season, could have been their final game at all of the season, met the moment.
00:17:00They never trailed in the game.
00:17:01The Knicks led again by Jalen Brunson with a game-high 32 points.
00:17:05Carl Anthony Towns with 24 points for the third straight game.
00:17:09Brunson and Towns, the second pair of teammates ever to each score 20-plus points in each of the first five games of the Conference Finals since Shaq and Kobe in 2002.
00:17:18Brunson saying our backs were against the wall.
00:17:21We've got to give it everything we have.
00:17:23The Pacers were so good in Game 4.
00:17:25They only made 40% of their shots this time around.
00:17:28The Knicks never trailing in the game.
00:17:30The star-studded crowd, which included the Spike, Stiller, Chalamet, Hydra, plus Kylie Jenner, plus Miles Teller, plus Michael Strahan in his orange pants, which are conveniently cut off in these images, had a lot to cheer for.
00:17:44But the numbers still clearly favor.
00:17:45There they are.
00:17:46There they are.
00:17:47The numbers favor Indiana.
00:17:49They have a chance to close it out Saturday night.
00:17:51They have not lost consecutive games since March.
00:17:53Wow.
00:17:54Really?
00:17:54Yeah.
00:17:55Something.
00:17:55The game was great last night.
00:17:56I was thinking about you in spirit, sitting next to Gail King.
00:17:58Yeah, thinking about me, but not inviting me.
00:18:02Those are two very little things.
00:18:03You know, okay.
00:18:04We'll work on that part.
00:18:05But, you know, they're a Gail King, and the whole game, Gail's like, be careful, be careful.
00:18:09She's yelling at her, be careful.
00:18:10I said, what do you mean?
00:18:11Tell me, Gail.
00:18:12Anyway, love you, Gail.
00:18:14She's a little tired this morning.
00:18:15Yeah, everybody's tired.
00:18:16Thank you, Will.
00:18:17Coming up, a new summer rip current warning.
00:18:19Plus, the new rules in the air and the new fines some airline passengers may encounter.
00:18:24And a new National Spelling Bee champ joins us live.
00:18:26All right.
00:18:26It's Friday, everybody.
00:18:31You got the love I always need.
00:18:36Tell me the horses and still what it means.
00:18:40Welcome back to GMA.
00:18:41Miley Cyrus releasing that new music video overnight, along with her new album.
00:18:46Well, that sounds like a hit already.
00:18:49Yeah, she's got something big that fans are still waiting for.
00:18:51Sam Champion's here with all the details coming up in pop news.
00:18:55Love Sam's Friday pop news.
00:18:57Never know what he's going to bring.
00:18:58First new at 730, Justice Department says an IT specialist working for the Defense Intelligence
00:19:03Agency was charged with trying to give classified information to a foreign government.
00:19:07Prosecutors alleged the 28-year-old wrote that he did not agree with the values of the
00:19:10current administration and was therefore willing to share the information.
00:19:14Also, two huge concerts set for last night and tonight at Fenway Park have been canceled.
00:19:18There were structural issues with the stage.
00:19:20Shakira was supposed to perform last night at the Boston ballpark with Jason Aldean, Brooks,
00:19:23and Dunn tonight.
00:19:24Ticket holders can get refunds.
00:19:26And mortgage rates climbed for a third straight week, reaching their highest level since January.
00:19:31The average 30-year fixed is now just under 7%.
00:19:34This comes as pending home sales declined more than 6% in April.
00:19:39And the Women's College World Series started with a bang for Oklahoma.
00:19:44Sophomore Ella Parker crushes a towering home run, giving the Sooners the walk-off win over Tennessee.
00:19:50Wow.
00:19:50Yep.
00:19:50Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso gave the four-time defending champions a little extra motivation
00:19:56before their comeback.
00:19:57She pointed out all the fans leaving before the game was over.
00:20:01They thought Oklahoma was done.
00:20:03She knew they weren't.
00:20:04Oklahoma's next game is Saturday against Texas, right here on ABC.
00:20:09It's not over till it's over.
00:20:10That is right.
00:20:11Yeah.
00:20:11So I'm feeling.
00:20:12We're going to turn now to a summer rip current warning with beach season here.
00:20:16There's new expert advice for surviving a rip current.
00:20:19Victor Okendo joined us from Miami Beach.
00:20:21And, Victor, you went to the water for us.
00:20:22Good morning.
00:20:25We did.
00:20:26Good morning, Michael.
00:20:26Experts tell us that one reason swimmers get into trouble, especially kids or people
00:20:30who are from out of town, swimming in the ocean is much different than swimming in a pool.
00:20:35This is a much more dynamic setting that can quickly and easily become overwhelming.
00:20:39So this morning, we'll help you avoid the danger and the new advice from experts on how
00:20:44to avoid any trouble.
00:20:45We're in Melbourne Beach, Florida, searching for rip currents.
00:20:52Just earlier this month, a young girl caught in a rip current helped by a bystander using
00:20:57a drone to deliver a flotation device.
00:21:00Thankfully, she survived.
00:21:01What makes a rip current so dangerous?
00:21:04They're out there every day and surfers and watermen, we use them to our advantage to get
00:21:09out past the waves and enjoy them.
00:21:11But if you don't know and you bring your family from inland America somewhere, you can find
00:21:16yourself into trouble and it can be a fatal day.
00:21:18We're focusing on two points that can help keep you alive.
00:21:21First, how to spot them so you can stay out of them.
00:21:24While rip currents can sometimes be impossible to see, there are clues you should look for.
00:21:29Here in Melbourne Beach, the most clear indicator are these dips in the shoreline where the water
00:21:34stretches further up onto the beach.
00:21:36What I like to tell people is where there's a dip, there's a rip.
00:21:39Have you ever been on the beach and the tides come in and wet all your stuff, but the people
00:21:42along each side of you are dry?
00:21:44You're in the rip, stay out of it.
00:21:46Other signs can be found on the surface of the water.
00:21:49Look for white foam like this or debris being pulled away from the shore.
00:21:54Or they could look like this, that flat area where the waves aren't breaking, created by
00:21:59a rip current.
00:22:00And the most obvious signs of danger, areas along jetties or piers and of course red flags.
00:22:06When in doubt, ask a lifeguard.
00:22:08Here we go.
00:22:10Next, if you do get caught in a current, how to escape it?
00:22:13Noah now says the age-old advice of swimming parallel to shore may not always work.
00:22:19So I put myself into one to show you why.
00:22:22It's taking us to the left.
00:22:24Which is parallel to shore.
00:22:26So for me, that is not the safest path out.
00:22:29The current can pull you to the left.
00:22:30It can pull you to the right.
00:22:32It can also spin you in a circle.
00:22:34It's chaotic and disorienting.
00:22:37Human instinct wants you to fight for your life.
00:22:39But experts say it's that panic, exerting too much energy, trying to swim against the
00:22:45current that leads to death.
00:22:46I just tried swimming against the current.
00:22:49I'd say I made it maybe 10, 15 yards and you can hear me.
00:22:52I'm out of gas.
00:22:53Experts say most people can't swim more than about 50 yards without needing to touch bottom.
00:22:59If you get caught in a rip, you might have to swim three to four times that to get back
00:23:04to shore.
00:23:05Meaning even if you can swim out of the current, you may not have the strength to get to safety.
00:23:10I'm pretty tired.
00:23:12And the idea of having to go another 50 or 60 yards back to shore, I don't think I can
00:23:19make that.
00:23:19So instead, experts now urging, do less.
00:23:23The key is not to panic.
00:23:25Let that current take you out and then flip and float.
00:23:30Some people call it floating like a leaf.
00:23:33Legs up, back of the head against the water and using only gentle movements.
00:23:38This will relax you, conserve energy and help you stay above water longer.
00:23:43It'll also give you a beat to determine which direction the current is flowing.
00:23:46If you can, swim perpendicular to that direction, like swimming to the side of a river.
00:23:52When you no longer feel the pull, swim at an angle, back to shore.
00:23:57If you can't, just float until help arrives.
00:24:00Use your hands to signal somebody.
00:24:02You should be okay.
00:24:03And that's why swimming in front of a lifeguard is always the safest place to swim.
00:24:10They sit up high for a reason so that they can see more.
00:24:13But if you do spot someone who's in trouble and there's not a lifeguard around, Noah says
00:24:17you should take 10.
00:24:18That is 10 seconds to signal someone else for help.
00:24:21Call 911 and then grab something that floats.
00:24:23It could be a boogie board.
00:24:25Something like a cooler.
00:24:26That would work too.
00:24:27Whatever will help you either reach that victim or be able to throw them something, whatever
00:24:32you do, do not attempt to rescue without some kind of flotation device.
00:24:37Guys?
00:24:38Very, very valuable advice there.
00:24:39Oh yeah.
00:24:40Definitely.
00:24:40Thank you, Victor.
00:24:41And I like the do less advice too while you're in the water.
00:24:44I'm all for doing less.
00:24:46It's good advice anytime.
00:24:47It works in a lot of places.
00:24:49Now with a new travel debate that's got people divided across the aisle.
00:24:53Yes, literally, it is all about what happens once your plane touches down and Sam's back
00:24:58to tell us all about it.
00:25:00Look, are you ready for this conversation?
00:25:02Are your seat backs upright and your tray tables in their fully locked position?
00:25:06Buckle up for this one.
00:25:07Some airline passengers are feeling cabin pressure.
00:25:09You've seen the videos of people complaining in the cabin, right?
00:25:12So let's say your plane lands and before you can even turn off the seatbelt sign, folks
00:25:17are jumping up to get to their destination and they're rushing the aisle.
00:25:20Well, one country is cracking down because folks, the best way to board a plane is row
00:25:24by row and the best way to onboard a plane is row by row.
00:25:28Turkey has a new find for some passengers.
00:25:30The first part is obvious, right?
00:25:31Also a rule here in the U S passengers are not allowed to unfasten your seatbelt and stand
00:25:36up, open the overhead compartments until the seatbelt sign has been switched off.
00:25:40But the next part is what's causing the huge debate.
00:25:43Has it ever happened to you?
00:25:44Has somebody shoved you as you're trying to get out of your seat to get to the door first?
00:25:49And I'm not talking about someone who has a connection.
00:25:51I'm talking about someone who just wants to get off the plane.
00:25:53It sounds like it's happened to you.
00:25:54George, do I look, do I look heated already?
00:25:57Because I feel like my blood pressure is high.
00:25:59All right.
00:25:59Well, if this bugs you too, you'll be happy to know the internet has dubbed the folks
00:26:03who stand in the aisle and rush forward aisle lice.
00:26:06Now I don't approve of that.
00:26:07The attorney's authority is saying that the new find quote, do not stand up or proceed in
00:26:13the aisle before it is your turn row by row to exit.
00:26:15Passengers who do not comply with the rules will be reported and an administrative fine
00:26:20will be imposed.
00:26:21This sounds like a lot.
00:26:22So how much is the fine?
00:26:24You're asking.
00:26:24What is the fine?
00:26:25How much is the fine?
00:26:26Thank you for asking, Michael.
00:26:27It's about $67.
00:26:29And if it's not clear that any U.S. airlines are going to impose this fine yet, but the Turkish
00:26:35airlines are, and I don't know if it even helps yet, but has it happened to you?
00:26:39Absolutely.
00:26:40I feel for the flight attendants who have to, like, play teacher in all of this.
00:26:45I mean, people just behave yourselves.
00:26:47Exactly right.
00:26:48So now the airlines will just start charging you $67 to cut in line.
00:26:52Yeah, right.
00:26:54George sees it a little differently.
00:26:56$67 and you get to get up early.
00:26:58You get a flag and you get a flag and you get a flag and you get a flag and you get $57
00:27:03to be rude to everybody.
00:27:05George just checks that fee box, that checkout for the ticket.
00:27:08I'm glad you're not running the airline.
00:27:12That may have solved it.
00:27:13All right.
00:27:14Another play of the day.
00:27:15The winner of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, 13-year-old Faison Zaki from Allen, Texas,
00:27:19beat 242 other competitors to take the championship title.
00:27:22It was the 100th anniversary of this tradition, and Faison joins us now.
00:27:26Congratulations.
00:27:27How's it going?
00:27:29Good.
00:27:30How about you?
00:27:31I'm doing great this morning.
00:27:32I probably got more sleep than you did.
00:27:36Yeah, I only got two hours last night.
00:27:39How are you feeling this morning?
00:27:43Definitely tired.
00:27:44So after this, I'm probably going to sleep, but definitely also excited from the adrenaline.
00:27:50I'll bet you are.
00:27:51One of the other reasons you're tired is you have quite a training regimen.
00:27:53Why don't you walk everybody through how you prepared for this tournament?
00:27:56So every day, once I get home from school, I open a dictionary and look for words that
00:28:04I don't recognize, and I write it down on like a Google Sheet or a Google Doc.
00:28:09So I do this for about five to six hours on weekdays, and then seven to eight on weekends.
00:28:18So yeah.
00:28:18Wow.
00:28:19Five to six hours on weekdays, seven to eight on weekends.
00:28:22That is a full-time job on top of school.
00:28:24Are you going to miss it or are you going to say, but you don't seem too bothered by it?
00:28:29I mean, it's...
00:28:30Go ahead.
00:28:32Yeah.
00:28:33No, I'm just going to say, like, it's not that bad.
00:28:36Like, I enjoy doing it.
00:28:38I am glad it's over now, though.
00:28:41What's your next challenge?
00:28:42So I really enjoy math, so maybe I can try, like, getting into, like, the International
00:28:51Maths Olympiad, but yeah.
00:28:53So, I mean, you impressed a lot of people with your casual style on stage.
00:28:57You're wearing your lucky hoodie right there.
00:28:59You called the judges bro.
00:29:00Yeah.
00:29:01How did you develop that confidence?
00:29:07How did you develop the confidence?
00:29:09Are you really as calm as you appear?
00:29:12I mean, yeah.
00:29:13So, like, I mean, I've been in this for seven years.
00:29:17So, like, at this point, I'm not really that nervous.
00:29:21I'm definitely confident, but not too overconfident.
00:29:25I also have that, like, casual style.
00:29:28So, yeah.
00:29:29I mean, I know I kind of, at this point, I do know Dr. Bailey a little bit personally.
00:29:33So, I just called him bro, like, in this for the moment.
00:29:36We saw you hit the ground after the wind.
00:29:40Tell us what was going through your mind in that moment.
00:29:44It was just, it was all a blur.
00:29:47It was just, I was just so excited.
00:29:49And, like, after I spelled my word, you could hear, like, at the end, when I spelled my word,
00:29:55I, like, I was kind of, like, losing breath.
00:29:57And, like, those last couple letters, I was, like, gasping for air.
00:30:01So, I was just, like, hyperventilating from, like, the excitement.
00:30:05But, yeah.
00:30:05I've never even heard of your winning word before.
00:30:09Why don't you spell it for everybody and tell us what it means?
00:30:13So, the word is éclaircissement, E-C-L-A-I-R-C-I-S-S-E-M-E-N-T.
00:30:20And it just means, like, enlightenment.
00:30:23But, yeah.
00:30:23And it's from French.
00:30:24So, when you heard it, did you know exactly what it meant?
00:30:27Did you know the word, or did you kind of work your way through it?
00:30:29I immediately recognized it.
00:30:33So, if you go back to the recording, you can see, like, as soon as Dr. Bailey said the word, I just went for it.
00:30:39So, yeah.
00:30:39I definitely didn't, like, do it fast, especially because of the mishap that happened a couple rounds early.
00:30:46But, yeah.
00:30:47Well, congratulations.
00:30:49You did great.
00:30:49It was so much fun to have you on with us this morning.
00:30:52Enjoy your nap.
00:30:55Yeah.
00:30:57That was so sweet.
00:30:58Éclaircissement.
00:31:00Enlightenment.
00:31:01We're all enlightened.
00:31:02When you're the smartest guy in the room, you can be chill.
00:31:04Yeah.
00:31:04Yeah.
00:31:04Exactly.
00:31:05Yeah, bro.
00:31:05Good for him, though.
00:31:06That's amazing work ethic.
00:31:08Coming up, I'm going to tell you about one couple's path to becoming debt-free, changing their lives to pay off $200,000 and still go on a dream vacation.
00:31:18And they spared themselves aisle chaos by following the rules.
00:31:22It's all coming up.
00:31:23Good morning, America.
00:31:27It's 8 a.m.
00:31:28Severe storms slamming the south.
00:31:31A tornado in Georgia leaving a teen critically injured.
00:31:34Heavy rain and strong winds whipping across parts of the region as the threat moves east.
00:31:39Plus, the out-of-control Canadian wildfires.
00:31:42The smoke on the move into the U.S. right now.
00:31:46Ginger is tracking it all.
00:31:48Free and clear.
00:31:49Hello, my name is Tinsley, and I am debt-free.
00:31:53One couple's journey to becoming debt-free, sharing how they created a five-year plan to pay off $200,000 and rewarded themselves with a dream vacation.
00:32:06And we have a dazzling performance for you this morning.
00:32:09Disney on Broadway stars from South Korea, Japan, and Times Square.
00:32:13It's just for G.M.A., as we say...
00:32:16Good morning, America!
00:32:20Good morning, America!
00:32:22Good morning, America!
00:32:26Live from Times Square, it's Friday.
00:32:30Good morning, America!
00:32:31We're meeting performers in Disney musicals in other countries for a live event you do not want to miss.
00:32:44That is coming up.
00:32:45It's so much fun, and Tori Johnson is here with deals and steals that are clever solutions for everything from charging your tech to looking your best.
00:32:53Everything at least half off.
00:32:55Also, our chief medical correspondent, Dr. Taran Arula, is here with a new warning about dietary supplements.
00:33:00Some are sending people to the ER.
00:33:02That's coming up.
00:33:03First, a look at the top stories breaking at 8.
00:33:05We're going to start with the severe storms taking aim at the East Coast this morning after the South was slammed with dangerous weather, including a tornado.
00:33:12Ginger, of course, is tracking it.
00:33:13Good morning, Ginger.
00:33:14Hey, George.
00:33:14So we saw eight reported tornadoes, Texas, Colorado, Florida, but this one, south of Atlanta, ripped through quickly, and it was actually actor Trey Cheney from The Wire, his home.
00:33:25He was in there.
00:33:26His son, who was 18, was also ripped from their home.
00:33:29He is in the ICU this morning.
00:33:31So we're thinking about that, and this same tornado captured on video from Interstate 75.
00:33:35Look at it crossing the interstate there.
00:33:37We are really lucky that more people weren't hurt by this, but watch what happens this afternoon.
00:33:41Atlanta, you are back in the severe threat.
00:33:43So after the noon hour, I'd say Atlanta, but making Columbia, Charlotte, Raleigh, Richmond all this afternoon, I'd say between 3 and 5, just be ready.
00:33:52Have two ways of getting warnings because we've got damaging wind, embedded tornadoes.
00:33:55It's going to rip through real fast, and then it's going to slow down a little, add a little bump of moisture, and that's why we see an elevated risk of flash flooding all the way back through West Virginia.
00:34:04You see where you've got Charlottesville, Virginia, up to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia.
00:34:08That's tonight for up to four inches of rain.
00:34:10So if that falls really quickly, don't drive if you get a flash flood warning, Rebecca.
00:34:14Thank you, Ginger.
00:34:15And as you said, we are thinking about Trey's son in the ICU this morning.
00:34:19Okay, we turn now to an emotional day of testimony in the Sean Diddy Combs trial, a former assistant alleging that Combs sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions.
00:34:29Let's go back to chief investigative correspondent Aaron Katursky.
00:34:33Good morning, Aaron.
00:34:34Good morning again to you, Rebecca.
00:34:37His former assistant said Sean Combs could ask for 17,000 things at once, anything from cracking his knuckles to doing his taxes.
00:34:45And she said she feared she could never tell him no.
00:34:49She'll be back on the witness stand here today where she's telling the jury of physical violence and sexual assault.
00:34:54This morning, a former assistant to Sean Combs, testifying under the pseudonym Mia, returns to the witness stand where she's tearfully and haltingly describing eight years at a workplace she called chaotic and toxic, and that included physical and sexual violence.
00:35:11He has thrown things at me.
00:35:12He has thrown me against the wall.
00:35:14He has thrown me into a pool.
00:35:16He has also sexually assaulted me.
00:35:18Combs denies sexually assaulting anyone.
00:35:20But Mia told the jury it happened more than once.
00:35:23The courtroom silent, the jury wrapped, as Mia, sobbing and with stilted speech, recalled sleeping in a bunk bed in Combs' Los Angeles home and waking to the weight of a person on top of me.
00:35:34Who was on top of you, a prosecutor asked.
00:35:37Mia replied, Huff.
00:35:38Why didn't you tell him no?
00:35:40Because I couldn't tell him no.
00:35:42I couldn't tell him no about a sandwich.
00:35:43I couldn't tell him no about anything.
00:35:46She said she told no on what happened.
00:35:48I was going to die with this.
00:35:49I didn't want anyone to know, ever.
00:35:51Mia said she worried Combs would fire me and ruin my future and somehow twist the story into making me look like a threat.
00:35:58Mia also testifying about her sister-like relationship with Combs' ex Cassie Ventura and her attempt to intervene when she said Combs smashed Ventura's head into a bed, leaving this scar.
00:36:09He threw me against the wall so quick and so easily, I realized we were in real danger.
00:36:14So the overall effect of Mia's testimony is really adding that foundation to Cassie's testimony.
00:36:20It's solidifying it for the jury and it's showing what the prosecution is looking to illustrate, that this is a pattern and practice of behavior.
00:36:29Federal prosecutors said Combs subjected Mia to forced labor, including sex, as part of a criminal enterprise that he denies running.
00:36:37She gave some of the trial's most harrowing testimony yet.
00:36:41And at one point, Michael, we saw Sean Combs' son hanging his head.
00:36:46Michael?
00:36:47Yeah, Aaron, I'm pretty sure it's hard for those kids to hear anything that comes up in this trial.
00:36:51Thank you so much for that.
00:36:52We're going to turn now to the Karen Reed murder retrial.
00:36:54After more than six weeks of testimony, the prosecution rests in his case yesterday and now the defense is ready to call his first witness this morning.
00:37:03Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman has the story.
00:37:05Good morning, Matt.
00:37:06Hey, good morning, Michael.
00:37:07After 23 days of testimony, the prosecution resting its case by having Karen Reed address the jury herself.
00:37:14Prosecution playing an interview, Reed gave Discovery ID in which she asks, what if I clipped him in the knee?
00:37:20Referring to her then boyfriend, Boston cop John O'Keefe.
00:37:23She faces second degree murder charges accused of reversing her Lexus SUV into him during a blizzard in January of 2022 and leaving him to die in the snow.
00:37:32And today the defense begins its case.
00:37:34Reed says it'll be a much more robust case than during the first trial, could last up to two weeks.
00:37:38First up will be a cell phone forensics expert.
00:37:41And the two most important witnesses who haven't spoken, the first is lead homicide investigator Michael Proctor,
00:37:47who was since fired after sending derogatory text messages about Reed during the investigation.
00:37:52And when asked if she would testify, Reed answered TBD.
00:37:56From the get-go, Reed's team saying she never hit anyone with her car that night.
00:38:01Instead, she's texting investigators covered up what really happened.
00:38:05The only thing both sides agree on, Officer John O'Keefe was beloved by everyone.
00:38:11Guys.
00:38:11All right, Matt.
00:38:12Thank you for that.
00:38:13We appreciate you.
00:38:14And coming up in our GMA morning menu, a warning about some dietary supplements causing liver damage and even fatalities.
00:38:20Chief Medical Correspondent, Dr. Tara Narul is here with what you need to watch out for.
00:38:24Also ahead, I'll tell you how one couple paid off $200,000 in debt and went on a dream vacation.
00:38:31They are sharing their tips.
00:38:32Plus, a big debate put to rest.
00:38:33When is the best time to shower, according to science?
00:38:36Believe it or not, Sam's going to bring you that answer after Pop News investigation.
00:38:40And he's got some special guests.
00:38:41George, showering science all right here.
00:38:44And it's not my fault I'm out of breath.
00:38:46The Aladdins made me do push-ups.
00:38:48These are the extraordinary performers who have played Aladdin and Jasmine.
00:38:51Not Alasmin.
00:38:53Aladdin and Jasmine.
00:38:55All here as we celebrate the AA and HPI Heritage Month with a live special event that's coming up right here.
00:39:00Are you guys ready?
00:39:02Honestly?
00:39:02Ready, ready?
00:39:02All right.
00:39:03I'm going to answer all your mid-30 prayers.
00:39:07You got me.
00:39:11We are back now with our GMA cover story, a health alert about herbal and dietary supplements.
00:39:20A growing number of people are ending up in the ER with serious liver injuries caused by supplements.
00:39:26In fact, a recent analysis shows supplements may now account for up to one in five cases of drug-induced liver damage in the U.S.
00:39:34Our chief medical correspondent, Dr. Tara Narula, is here with what you need to know.
00:39:39And Dr. Narula, thank you.
00:39:41Good morning, by the way.
00:39:42Good morning.
00:39:42But what type of supplements cause the most concern?
00:39:44And why are they, quote, natural supplements that are sending people to the ER as well?
00:39:49Well, this industry has really taken off.
00:39:50You know, in 1993, there were about 4,000 herbal and dietary supplements on the market.
00:39:54Now we're talking about over 80,000.
00:39:5620% of Americans are taking herbal supplements.
00:39:59It's a $15 billion industry.
00:40:01Mostly women, mostly people who are older.
00:40:04And people really do it because they think they're helping themselves.
00:40:06They're taking something natural.
00:40:08They want to improve their health, maybe treat a chronic symptom or condition.
00:40:11The problem is that these are pharmacologically and biologically active substances, just like
00:40:16prescription medications are.
00:40:18And so there can be risks associated.
00:40:20And in fact, as you mentioned, we are seeing a big rise in liver injury from some of these
00:40:24supplements, both in the United States and in Europe.
00:40:27About 20% of drug-induced liver injury is now considered to be from supplements.
00:40:33The people who have been listed for liver transplants, that number has increased eightfold
00:40:37from 1995 to 2020.
00:40:40And this can cause death and risk for liver transplant.
00:40:42So it's a big deal.
00:40:43And when you look at the list, it's wide-ranging.
00:40:46Things like turmeric, green tea extract, some weight loss supplements, bodybuilding supplements,
00:40:51black cohosh, which a lot of women take for menopause.
00:40:54So there's a big list there of potential culprits.
00:40:56And they're not regulated like prescription medications.
00:40:59That is the real thing that I think people don't understand.
00:41:02So supplements are considered foods.
00:41:04They are not regulated in the same way as drugs.
00:41:07And so manufacturers do not have to prove safety, efficacy, or quality before they end
00:41:11up on the market.
00:41:12They don't have to report post-market adverse effects.
00:41:15And so what can happen is once those drugs are out there, then the FDA is playing catch-up
00:41:20and trying to then go and recall drugs when there's a problem.
00:41:23The issue with supplements is that they can be mislabeled.
00:41:27They can have other things in them.
00:41:28So they have been found to have prescription medications, bacteria, chemicals, heavy metals,
00:41:33pesticides.
00:41:34They can have either more or less than the active amount of drug that you think or a chemical
00:41:37that's in there.
00:41:38So it's a real big issue that just a lot of people are not aware of.
00:41:41Yeah, and the prevalence, if you scroll through your feed on social media, I think about this
00:41:46every few minutes I'm being served up an ad for one of these things.
00:41:51And I'm sure it's, I mean, people make a really solid case for why you should take one.
00:41:55And there's a lot of people taking them as a result.
00:41:57What do you do if you are taking something?
00:42:00And how do you know if it's safe?
00:42:01Well, you need to talk to your doctor.
00:42:02And so a lot of times when we ask patients, what are you taking?
00:42:05They're not telling us, their physicians, about their supplements, either because they don't
00:42:08think it's important or because they just don't want to bring it up.
00:42:11But the reality is, it is important.
00:42:13In fact, I just had a patient last week, an elderly woman on multiple meds.
00:42:16Suddenly her liver function tests went up.
00:42:18We didn't know, is it her statin or is it something else?
00:42:21And she said, oh, I started a new supplement.
00:42:23She stopped it.
00:42:24The liver test went back to normal.
00:42:25So really important to discuss this, right?
00:42:27You can bring in your bottles and show your physician.
00:42:30There's a website that people can go to called Livertox where you can plug in your supplement
00:42:34and it will give you some information.
00:42:36You can look for those third-party certifications, SEALs.
00:42:39There are certain companies that do that.
00:42:40That will help you to tell if it's more safe.
00:42:43It won't ensure the efficacy of it.
00:42:45And also it's important for people to know they can interact with prescription drugs, too.
00:42:49So, you know, for example, St. John's warts can affect statins.
00:42:53Ginkgo can affect blood thinners.
00:42:54So really important to talk to your doctor.
00:42:56And during pregnancy, I remember during pregnancy, too, there's a lot of things you shouldn't be
00:43:00taking even if you are okay to take them when you're not.
00:43:03Absolutely.
00:43:03So always bring it up.
00:43:04Discuss risks and benefits.
00:43:05Smart.
00:43:06Smart.
00:43:06Eye-opener.
00:43:07Yeah, it really was.
00:43:10Thanks.
00:43:10We're going to move now to our Money Smart series.
00:43:12We'll look at how one couple wiped out $200,000 in debt, rewarded themselves with a dream vacation.
00:43:17Rebecca here with all the details.
00:43:18Yes, and it wasn't easy, George.
00:43:19But after going deep into the red with school loans, Tinsley Crisp and her husband knew something
00:43:24had to change.
00:43:25So they came up with a five-year plan and now they're sharing what they learned.
00:43:29Hello, my name is Tinsley and I am debt-free.
00:43:34Debt-free.
00:43:35Two words 31-year-old Tinsley Crisp couldn't imagine saying when she and her husband Ben
00:43:40amassed $200,000 of student loans.
00:43:43It felt like I would never accomplish this goal.
00:43:47I would be paying this off until the day that I died.
00:43:51Student loan debt has reached a staggering $1.63 trillion in the United States.
00:43:57And more and more borrowers are struggling to pay it off.
00:44:01Tinsley and her husband were determined to get ahead, so they met with a financial planner
00:44:05and created a five-year plan.
00:44:07We said, this is how much we're making.
00:44:09This is how much debt there is.
00:44:11These are our goals.
00:44:12And from there, we established a budget.
00:44:15We established the timeline.
00:44:18Her tips?
00:44:19Get really specific with your budget.
00:44:21We really wanted to account for everything.
00:44:24And I mean, like, everything.
00:44:27It came down to, we were planning out when I bought my shampoo and my conditioner.
00:44:32She made sacrifices, little to no traveling over the five years.
00:44:37Whenever we chose to miss friends' weddings, family vacations, maybe even extra trips to
00:44:43visit family just for the holidays, it was tough.
00:44:45After five years, she and her husband were able to reward themselves debt-free with a trip
00:44:51to Greece.
00:44:52To get to that moment and to enjoy that vacation really felt like our dream becoming a reality.
00:44:59It can become a reality.
00:45:01Tinsley shares 13 tips in all.
00:45:02One of them is to embrace odd jobs, something anyone could do.
00:45:07They did everything from babysitting to running errands for others, hosting a trivia night at
00:45:12a local bar, a little extra cash there.
00:45:14Another way to make a dent in your debt is to find ways to earn cash back.
00:45:18There's even apps that can help you do that.
00:45:20You might even be able to install a movement tracker on your car to get a discount on insurance.
00:45:25The bottom line is you do what adds up, you behave smart, and then you treat yourself.
00:45:31Have that thing in the moment.
00:45:32Yeah, exactly.
00:45:32Go to Greece.
00:45:33Yeah.
00:45:34But it helps to have that in the mirror out there, something to look forward to.
00:45:39This is why you're doing this.
00:45:40Thank you, Rebecca.
00:45:42Friday pop news.
00:45:43Let's do Friday pop news, George.
00:45:44And if I was going to have anything with me, it would be a top pony.
00:45:48Did you know?
00:45:49All will be explained later.
00:45:51Did you know it's a national holiday?
00:45:52Happy holiday.
00:45:53Well, it is for me anyway.
00:45:54Happy Miley Cyrus new music day to all who celebrate.
00:45:57And that certainly does include me.
00:45:59The singer dropping her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, overnight.
00:46:02And, of course, she gave fans more, releasing a music video for her song, Easy Lover.
00:46:07Miley bringing back that top pony.
00:46:26Fringed chaps.
00:46:27Easy, breezy, on your way to the grocery store.
00:46:29Something Beautiful features 13 tracks that Cyrus describes as one-of-a-kind pop opera fueled by fantasy, like my every morning.
00:46:37USA Today is saying Miley is at her creative peak, and they are right on the album where bangers and ballads exist in harmony.
00:46:44Something Beautiful is streaming everywhere right now, and that's not all.
00:46:48Cyrus is co-directed a 55-minute visual film that will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 6th.
00:46:55Wow, is she busy.
00:46:55And it will hit theaters on June 12th.
00:46:57Sam, I am really disappointed you didn't come in with a top pony.
00:47:00I wanted to, George.
00:47:02But it would have had to have been weaved in there, and that just took too much time.
00:47:08And that's usually on Tuesdays, anyway.
00:47:11I just had a visual.
00:47:12I'm glad you didn't come in with a top pony.
00:47:16All right, and now it's time to return to the buildings.
00:47:18And by that, I mean the only murders in the building building.
00:47:21Salia Gomez is revealing new casting information for season five with a brand new video.
00:47:26Here it is.
00:47:28Say you're having me back for season five?
00:47:31Well, I think that depends on...
00:47:33No, no, no.
00:47:33That wasn't a question.
00:47:37Say you're having me back for season five?
00:47:39Oh, we're going to play it twice?
00:47:40Gomez making a reference to Streep's famous line in The Devil Wears Prada.
00:47:45No, no.
00:47:45That's not a question.
00:47:46Only murders in the building social accounts posted that video with the caption,
00:47:50Gird your loins, Meryl is returning for season five.
00:47:54That's all.
00:47:55Production is currently underway, but no word yet on when it will hit our screens.
00:47:59So you guys are going to turn in or tune in for season five.
00:48:03No, no.
00:48:04That wasn't a question.
00:48:05Only Rebecca, I only got you for that one.
00:48:11All right.
00:48:11And finally, let's talk about your shower habits.
00:48:14Yes, yours.
00:48:15The question is, should your cleanliness be next to coffee or cozy comforters?
00:48:19Now, here's what I mean by that.
00:48:21Should you shower in the morning or at night?
00:48:23Well, one expert is starting the conversation with their opinion.
00:48:27She says morning showers are best because, guys, our sheets aren't necessarily as clean
00:48:32as we think we are, and therefore, we are not as clean as we think we are after an evening
00:48:37shower and a good night's sleep.
00:48:39I'm not going to ruin your breakfast, but Google skin and sleep and sweat and all that.
00:48:43All right.
00:48:44Survey says 60% of us shower in the morning.
00:48:47Well, how about you shower in the morning and you shower at night?
00:48:50Oh.
00:48:50I don't know.
00:48:51It's simple.
00:48:52And then if you work out during the day, you shower again.
00:48:56Yeah.
00:48:56I'm clean, man.
00:48:59Only 60% shower in the morning?
00:49:01To me, it's a necessary thing.
00:49:03You know what?
00:49:04I am literally looking at our crew boy.
00:49:06Which one of you?
00:49:07Filthy animals.
00:49:10Let's go to Ginger.
00:49:11I got an idea right there.
00:49:13Oh, no.
00:49:13Sam, you told me Top Pony Day was today.
00:49:16Ginger!
00:49:18Hey, I'll do it on Tuesday again so we can match, but whatever it takes.

00:53:21And Juju Chang is here with a look of his trip, which is a trip of a lifetime.
00:53:25Juju, good morning.
00:53:26Absolutely, guys.
00:53:27It was such a blast.
00:53:29It was fun to hang out with him.
00:53:30And it was as if we took a magic carpet ride to the land of K-pop, where I was born, as you guys know, and to Tokyo, where DDR, as a Filipino-American, got to explore all sorts of Asian culture and fashion.
00:53:43And, honestly, there is nothing like hanging out with the coolest evil sidekick on Broadway.
00:53:51That evil laugh is Iago's calling card in Disney's Aladdin on Broadway, created by performer Don Daryl Rivera.
00:53:59He traveled across the Pacific to meet his Iago counterparts in Asia.
00:54:06First stop, Seoul.
00:54:08Since I was really little, I have seen many Disney shows and movies, and I still can't believe I'm in a Disney theater show.
00:54:16That's so cool.
00:54:17That is so cool.
00:54:20Next stop, the sprawling Gwangjang food market with chef Austin Kang of Seoul hotspot Mukjung.
00:54:27Look at all this, like, vegetables.
00:54:29Watch out, watch out.
00:54:30Watch out, watch out.
00:54:35Wow.
00:54:35I feel like my soul is, like, up here, literally.
00:54:39Everything is so good.
00:54:43So what do you think food is so ingrained in identity and culture?
00:54:47Food is what brings everyone together.
00:54:50Like, for example, for us, too, it's our first time meeting each other.
00:54:53But what puts us together?
00:54:54It's this, the food.
00:54:56Yeah.
00:54:56Wow.
00:54:59Wow, look at that.
00:55:00She said, mix it well.
00:55:01That's beautiful.
00:55:02Thank you so much.
00:55:03Oh, my God.
00:55:04This is so good.
00:55:06No more much so.
00:55:08Welcome to Korea.

00:55:42Yes.
00:55:43You're so good.
00:55:44Next, we travel to the land of the rising sun.
00:55:59Where Don Daryl met Tokyo's Iago.
00:56:03What do you think it is about the story of Aladdin that appeals to Japanese audiences?
00:56:07The show has an energy that really sort of brings everyone together, kind of like a whirlwind.
00:56:13And a special visit to Kabuki-za, home to the revered Japanese theater tradition of Kabuki.
00:56:20Oh, hiya gozaimasu.
00:56:23Don Daryl was honored to meet Kabuki star Matsuya Inoue.
00:56:26The first step is putting this cap on.
00:56:30As you see this, this is the base for my wig.
00:56:32And then I put on my base makeup.
00:56:38Another headliner, Ukan Inoue, a sixth generation Kabuki actor.
00:56:43Thank you so much for having us.
00:56:47These costumes are handmade.
00:56:50I didn't know this was happening.
00:56:52Yes, yes.
00:56:56Wow, unbelievable.
00:57:01You're getting emotional.
00:57:02I am getting emotional.
00:57:03My parents gave up a lot to be in America.
00:57:06And now I have this opportunity to connect with other actors and artists all over the world.
00:57:11I mean, I'm just so grateful.
00:57:13From the 400-year-old Kabuki tradition to today's culture of kawaii or cute on steroids.
00:57:21So I'm going to get this.
00:57:22Don Daryl popped into 6% Doki Doki in trendy Harajuku.
00:57:27Can you make me kawaii-kuo?
00:57:30Yes.
00:57:31Good.
00:57:34It's time to go kawaii!
00:57:37Sugoi!
00:57:38Let's do this.
00:57:39I think we found it.
00:57:45Well, Sasami-san, what do you think?
00:57:46Am I kawaii?
00:57:48I'm kawaii!
00:57:51He is super kawaii, super cute.
00:57:54And, you know, DDR, fun fact, was part of the original cast of Aladdin on Broadway.
00:57:59Going strong 11 years and counting.
00:58:01And as the son of immigrants, he really was able to explore a wide range of cultures
00:58:06and reflect on what it means to be Asian-American.
00:58:09And, of course, we'll have much more of the humiliating K-pop scenes on the line tonight.
00:58:13I thought you had a good time.
00:58:14I did.
00:58:15I had a great time.
00:58:16I mean, I want to go.
00:58:18We were all making travel notes.
00:58:19Yeah.
00:58:20That was so much fun.
00:58:21All right.
00:58:21So from Broadway to Seoul to Tokyo, GMA is taking a magic carpet ride of our own.
00:58:26To the Other Side of the World with Disney on Broadway.
00:58:28In honor of AAN-HBI Heritage Month, we have an exclusive performance for you guys
00:58:33featuring the Korean, Japanese, and New York's Broadway cast members from Aladdin,
00:58:37The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen.

01:03:32Here now with our in-house presidential historian Mark Uptogrove
01:03:35He's out with a new book
01:03:36Make Your Mark
01:03:37Lessons in Character from Seven Presidents
01:03:39Thanks for coming in today
01:03:40Good to be with you
01:03:41It's a hard act to follow, George
01:03:43Aladdin
01:03:44That is a hard act to follow
01:03:45Welcome to morning television
01:03:47So I love the title
01:03:48Make Your Mark
01:03:49Lessons in Character from Seven Presidents
01:03:51What do you hope people get out of it?
01:03:52Well, 2,500 years ago the Greeks wrote that character is destiny
01:03:56And I want to show that that sentiment is as true today as it was nearly three millennia ago
01:04:02And it's reflected, I think, most clearly in the character of our presence
01:04:06So I wrote about the presence that I've known, I've spent time with
01:04:09And whose legacies, in whose legacies we can see the character has really, in some ways, steered the destiny of our nation
01:04:19And to a large degree of the world
01:04:21You sum up the president's in one or two words
01:04:23Reagan, optimism
01:04:24Obama, grace
01:04:26For George W. Bush you said giving back
01:04:28And you have a very specific example to show that
01:04:31And that's the president's emergency plan for AIDS relief
01:04:34A program he put into place in 2003
01:04:38As the AIDS epidemic was ravaging much of the world
01:04:41In particular sub-Saharan Africa
01:04:43The acronym is PEPFAR
01:04:46PEPFAR went into place
01:04:47And since that time
01:04:48A little over 20 years after it's been put into place
01:04:53It has saved the lives of 28 million people across the world
01:04:57That's nearly the population of Australia
01:05:00That we have saved through this program
01:05:02Which cost the American taxpayers relatively little money
01:05:06But that shows the character of George W. Bush
01:05:09Yeah, we've seen huge cutbacks in the last several months
01:05:11By Elon Musk and Donald Trump
01:05:13People are dying every day
01:05:14That's right
01:05:15And I think Secretary Rubio said that 85% of PEPFAR still remains in place
01:05:20That remains to be seen
01:05:21However, that's disputed on the ground
01:05:23But again, for a minimal investment
01:05:26We've seen the profound difference we as a nation can make
01:05:28President and I work for Bill Clinton
01:05:31Your word is resilience
01:05:32Resilience
01:05:33As you know, more than anyone, George
01:05:36He faced great personal and political travails
01:05:39And yet he always came back to fight for the American people
01:05:42And you saw even during the course of his presidency
01:05:44At the most controversial times
01:05:46The American people were behind Bill Clinton
01:05:49Because they saw him working for them
01:05:51After the Monica Lewinsky impeachment
01:05:54His approval rating was an all-time high of 73%
01:05:57The American people said
01:05:59Yes, we understand he has flaws
01:06:01But he's working for us
01:06:02And our country works in general
01:06:05So I think he was rewarded for that
01:06:07And left the presidency, George
01:06:09With the highest outgoing approval rating
01:06:12Of any modern president, 64%
01:06:14You don't write about our two most recent presidents
01:06:16Joe Biden and Donald Trump
01:06:17Why not?
01:06:18Well, first of all
01:06:19These are presidents I've known
01:06:21I don't know Donald Trump
01:06:22I've never interviewed him
01:06:23So that was an easy one
01:06:24But Joe Biden was in the office when I wrote the book
01:06:27His legacy was still in the balance
01:06:30So I opted not to write for him
01:06:31And we've seen a lot happen
01:06:33Since I put the book to bed last year
01:06:35And I think his legacy is still in the balance
01:06:38Could you sum up his character in one word?
01:06:40I think he's a decent man
01:06:41He's a truly decent person
01:06:42And you can see that in his presidency
01:06:44When he tried to return the nation to democratic norms and values
01:06:50And tried to be the president of all Americans
01:06:53It's very hard in this divided political environment
01:06:56How about Donald Trump?
01:06:57Well, Donald Trump, it's hard
01:06:58Again, his legacy is very much in the balance
01:07:01But most of the qualities that I write about
01:07:03For these presidents show a certain level of compassion
01:07:06And, you know, America is defined
01:07:09Not only for its strength in the world
01:07:11But for its compassion
01:07:13That's what distinguishes us as a great nation
01:07:16We don't see a great deal of compassion from Donald Trump
01:07:19And you can see that with the eradication
01:07:21The systematic eradication of government
01:07:23Thanks for coming in
01:07:24The book is called
01:07:25Make Your Mark Lessons in Character from Seven Presidents
01:07:27Coming up next
