00:00:11severe weather to 90 million Americans from Texas to New Jersey, this church in St. Louis
00:00:16crumbling.
00:00:17The extreme weather is now moving here through downtown Indianapolis.
00:00:21Team coverage of these dangerous storms and where they are headed next.
00:00:27Explosive manhunt, the intense search going on right now after 10 inmates, some facing
00:00:31murder charges, bust out of jail in New Orleans.
00:00:34This was intentional. There is much more than meets the eye.
00:00:37At least three recaptured why authorities think they had help in their escape and the
00:00:41taunting message they left behind.
00:00:46Explosive testimony. Cassie Ventura wraps up four days on the stand in the racketeering
00:00:50trial of ex-boyfriend Sean Diddy Combs. How the defense is questioning her memory and
00:00:56motivation and what she said about that beating caught on camera.
00:01:02Bear attack. Minutes after these bears were spotted, a man mauled in his own backyard.
00:01:07My leg, my left leg, my whole left leg.
00:01:11The frantic 911 call and what that man was trying to do when the bear came charging.
00:01:18Summer travel season getting ready to kick off Memorial Day weekend. A travel expert
00:01:22shares advice for avoiding the crowds. Plus the great deals on last minute getaway.
00:01:29WNBA tip off. The 2025 season underway. ESPN's Andrea Carter with the names and teams to
00:01:40watch. And Knicks in six. The team crushing the Celtics to advance to the Eastern Conference
00:01:49finals for the first time in 25 years.
00:01:54Live from ABC News in New York, this is Good Morning America.
00:02:00Good morning America. It's quiet out in Times Square now.
00:02:03Yeah, a little bit.
00:02:04But about seven hours ago or so, it wasn't. It was wild. The Knicks pulling off that decisive
00:02:10win against the Celtics to head to the Eastern Conference finals. Fans going wild in the
00:02:16streets celebrating outside Madison Square Garden following that 38 point blowout. We've
00:02:21got the highlights ahead.
00:02:23People were climbing on the light poles and everything. It was like they were doing it
00:02:26big.
00:02:27A few zombies still walking around early this morning in Times Square, yeah.
00:02:30We've also got the latest overnight on that major transit strike. Train engineers for
00:02:34New Jersey Transit walking picket lines for a second day. The latest ahead on when contract
00:02:39talks could resume.
00:02:40Yeah, a lot to cover there. Also, we'll go live to Vatican City and preparations for
00:02:44tomorrow's installation of Pope Leo. The first Roman Catholic pope from the U.S. will
00:02:49formally take charge of the church as leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics.
00:02:54But we do begin here, of course, with that deadly tornado outbreak in the Midwest. The
00:02:58violent storms killing at least 16 people overnight. And we're expecting more extreme
00:03:02weather all weekend long. ABC's Alex Stone is in Clear Creek, Indiana with the latest
00:03:07now. Good morning, Alex.
00:03:10Gio, good morning to you. We're getting our first look with the sun coming up of what
00:03:14this tornado did here. In fact, this was the post office in this small town. You can see
00:03:19what remains of the blue post office box, the lock boxes, shipping supplies, greeting
00:03:25cards. There's debris and nails all over the ground here. Just one of multiple tornadoes
00:03:31in this region.
00:03:35Tonight, deadly storms from the heartland to the East Coast, bringing heavy floods,
00:03:39powerful winds, large hail and tornadoes to over 90 million Americans. Parts of Kentucky
00:03:48shredded at least nine dead in Laurel County. This neighborhood torn apart by a tornado.
00:03:54Home after home reduced to rubble. First responders searching for survivors.
00:03:58We saw stuff falling and the next thing we knew, he said most of the house was gone.
00:04:02The governor there declaring a state of emergency in Missouri, at least seven deaths across
00:04:07the state. In St. Louis, Missouri, the damage extensive. Oh, my God. In the houses. Oh,
00:04:16my God. Debris littering the roads. Trees uprooted like this massive one strewn across
00:04:21the street. At least four dead in the city due to the storm. One killed after part of
00:04:26this church crumbled to the ground. I'm a resident here in St. Louis. I was born and
00:04:31raised here. Never seen anything like this. In a nearby suburb, large pieces of hail hammering
00:04:40these homes. Tornadoes also touching down in Missouri. This one captured from the highway
00:04:48and another one seen nearly three hours north. And in Illinois, this video capturing a twister
00:04:54forming in Marion, a dust storm in Bloomington consuming the sky roads barely visible for
00:05:00drivers navigating their way through. We were across the border in Indiana as a storm
00:05:05raged on. The extreme weather is now moving here through downtown Indianapolis. There's
00:05:09a concert down the street. People are taking shelter in the lobbies of the buildings to
00:05:14get out of this. The northeast also hit hard as those storms pushed east floodwaters, overtaking
00:05:20parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, damaging winds ripping through Virginia, toppling trees
00:05:26and leaving at least two dead. With the number of dead going up today, over half a million
00:05:33people in this region have no electricity this morning with and we know this is just
00:05:37the beginning in some places. Alex Stone for us. Thank you so much. Let's get an outlook
00:05:41now for this multi day storm outbreak and go to smart Theodore here tomorrow. What are
00:05:46we looking at? Yeah, you know what? It is really looking at devastating in those images
00:05:50just yesterday alone. We saw more than 600 storm reports, 26 reported tornadoes so far
00:05:55from Texas all the way to New Jersey. Right now, the current threat is in Alabama. Parts
00:06:00of Mississippi. You have a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 a.m. Central time for the Carolinas
00:06:05that goes through lunchtime. Stick around. We're gonna talk more about who will see what
00:06:09when through the coming days. For now, Janay back to you. Important because as you just
00:06:12mentioned a multi day storm smart. Thank you. Now to the urgent manhunt this morning following
00:06:17a mass escape from a New Orleans jail, authorities say 10 men got out. At least three have already
00:06:23been recaptured. ABC's Maria Villarreal joins us with the very latest on the search. Good
00:06:27morning to you, Maria. Hey, good morning, Janay. Local schools and universities. They
00:06:32are on high alert. They're stepping up security on campus and a graduation ceremony is expected
00:06:37to happen over the weekend. As of now, this jail escape, it happened in the heart of New
00:06:43Orleans. Seven dangerous criminals still on the run, leaving the community on edge. This
00:06:51morning, new images and details emerging from inside that New Orleans jail where 10 inmates
00:06:57dug their way out. Surveillance video showing two of the men rigorously pulling on a cell
00:07:03door that police say leads outside, then watches all 10 quickly run out of the building through
00:07:10a loading dock door and onto the interstate. We think this was intentional. There is much
00:07:15more than meets the eye. Authorities say the group took advantage of defective locks on
00:07:20their usual cells and making their way here, removing a bolted toilet from the wall to
00:07:26create their escape. All of this has been removed and these have been clean cut. We
00:07:31have reason to believe that there was some assistance with this scrawled on the wall
00:07:36above. We innocent and too easy with an arrow toward the hole where they escaped out of
00:07:42view of the officer on duty. Authorities say they broke out around one a.m. early Friday
00:07:48morning, but officers didn't realize what happened until an official head count took
00:07:54place at 8 30 more than seven hours later. Police say at the time of the incident, there
00:08:01were no deputies at that unit, and the assigned technician had stepped away to get food. We
00:08:06know that they had help. We're showing you they had help. This was coordinated. So far,
00:08:12three of the 10 escapees found hours later, one hiding beneath the car at a hotel in the
00:08:18French quarter and now a multi agency manhunt intensifying for seven more suspects, some
00:08:25facing murder charges, all considered armed and dangerous. It is a disaster of epic
00:08:33proportions that I haven't seen, and there will certainly be an inquiry into any and
00:08:39everyone who played any any role in helping these individuals get out of jail. Everyone
00:08:45is gonna be charged and prosecuted.
00:08:50As of right now, three employees have been placed on suspension, but we do know more than
00:08:54200 men and women are aiding in this manhunt as it intensifies, including the U. S.
00:08:59Marshals and the FBI, who are now offering a $5000 reward for any tips that lead to an
00:09:05arrest. Gio, what an unbelievable story made a thank you for bringing that to us. And
00:09:10we're gonna turn out of the major transit strike in New Jersey and New York, affecting
00:09:13hundreds of thousands of people. Shakira fans going to her concert overnight, having to
00:09:17find another way to get there, and it is not over just yet.
00:09:22How are we welcome? This morning, the New Jersey transit strike now entering its second
00:09:28day. It's just disorganized from top to bottom, leaving passengers frustrated as they
00:09:32navigated the evening commute, trying to find other options basically paid for two ways.
00:09:37Now I'm already paying a monthly, so now I'm double paying for my commute. Plus
00:09:42parking negotiators failing to hold talks Friday after both sides said that they were
00:09:47willing to come back to the table. Our doors are open. We're ready to restart negotiations
00:09:52literally this second, but we need the blood to come back to the negotiating table in
00:09:58good faith. The vice president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen,
00:10:02James Lewis, telling me how talks broke down late Thursday hours before the strike was
00:10:07cold. You were in that negotiation meeting for 15 hours. Correct. What happened? We
00:10:12gave him our last offer. We thought it was going to be one that they couldn't be
00:10:15acceptable. After a few minutes, they came back in the room, thanked us for what we
00:10:20did, but said they're not talking anymore. And they got up and walked out. It all
00:10:24comes down to pay the union, saying its members are the lowest paid of any major
00:10:28passenger railroad, despite operating the third largest train system in the country.
00:10:36On Friday, Penn Station's platforms abandoned these trains that typically carry more
00:10:40than 350,000 commuters each day sitting empty and Hoboken for now, passengers
00:10:47relying on New Jersey transit bus routes with additional capacity preparing for
00:10:52increased traffic and commute times. Just a mess. And Beyonce's concert is also at
00:10:57MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Thursday. So fans may also need to find another way
00:11:01to get there. But talks aren't expected to get going again until tomorrow. We will
00:11:06see if they finally get to a decision. So many people impacted by this and having
00:11:10to find alternative ways to get to work, to school.
00:11:12That's right. Potential ripple effect too. Gio, thank you for that. We do turn now to
00:11:16the explosive testimony in the sex trafficking trial of music mogul Sean
00:11:20Diddy Combs. Prosecution witness Cassie Ventura wrapping up four days on the
00:11:25stand. ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent Aaron Katursky joins us with
00:11:29a look at what comes next in this case. Aaron, good morning. Good morning to you.
00:11:32We had a week of testimony like no other. Reduce Sean Combs from one time cultural
00:11:37icon to what its own lawyers described as an abusive, jealous, vindictive drug
00:11:42addict. Cassie Ventura was the star, but jurors are now getting a sense of the
00:11:46supporting cast. After four intense, disturbing, uncomfortable days of
00:11:51testimony, Cassie Ventura walked off the witness stand without looking at Sean
00:11:55Combs, saying in a statement read by her lawyer, she hoped revealing the
00:11:59darkest secrets of her life makes a difference. I hope that my testimony has
00:12:03given strength and a voice to other survivors and can help others who have
00:12:09suffered to speak up and also heal from abuse and fear. The defense questioned
00:12:14her memory and her motivation. Ventura testified she expected to receive $10
00:12:18million from the Intercontinental Hotel after the beating caught on security
00:12:23cameras there in 2016. In addition to the 20 million she said she received
00:12:27from Combs in a civil settlement. But she told the jury I'd give that money
00:12:31back if I never had to have freak offs. On cross examination, Ventura said she
00:12:36believed Combs was intoxicated during that incident. The defense argues
00:12:40Combs became violent because of drugs, not as a means to strong arm Ventura
00:12:44into sex. As prosecutors allege, I just feel like did he's gonna pull
00:12:48something because that's just how he is. Dawn Richard, who appeared on the
00:12:52reality show, making the band and became part of Danity Kane and Diddy Dirty
00:12:56Money, testified she observed Cassie being attacked by Combs. She said she
00:13:00was at his Los Angeles home in 2009 when she saw Combs hit Ventura in the
00:13:05head and beat her on the ground. Combs has denied the allegation. She wanted to
00:13:10do the right thing and come and testify, and that's why she's here. The jury
00:13:14also saw what federal agents said they seized from the hotel room the night
00:13:18Combs was arrested in September. Illegal drugs, $9000 cash, tubes of
00:13:23lubricant and bottles of baby oil. The same kind of supplies Cassie Ventura
00:13:28said Combs wanted for freak offs. Cassie Ventura's mother is expected to
00:13:32testify next week. So is a woman who Ventura said hit Combs Combs hit with a
00:13:38wooden hanger. Just another example of what prosecutors say was his assault of
00:13:43behavior. Wow. And what more could we expect to hear from that testimony from
00:13:47Cassie's mother? And what else do we expect next week? Cassie Ventura said
00:13:51she had endured a beating at the hands of Sean Combs just before she was
00:13:55scheduled to go home to Connecticut to visit her mom. The jury saw pictures
00:13:59that she said her mother took of bruises on her back and legs. You could
00:14:03see the welts visible. Her mom's expected to back up her testimony.
00:14:08Whether it amounts to sex trafficking, though, that's the major question for
00:14:12the jury. Prosecutors still may have some work to do there. That is the
00:14:15question. We have weeks to go left in this trial. Aaron, thank you. Appreciate
00:14:19you being there, Aaron. Turning overseas now, with at least nine people
00:14:22reported killed in Ukraine by Russian drone strike just hours after the two
00:14:26countries held their first face to face talks in more than three years. ABC's
00:14:30Lama Hassan has the very latest on that from London. Good morning, Lama. Yeah,
00:14:34good morning to you today. That's right. This morning, the Ukrainian military
00:14:37says a Russian drone strike hit a civilian bus in the Sumi region near
00:14:41the northeastern border. The bus packed with passengers, the Russian defense
00:14:46ministry saying they were targeting a military equipment staging area. The
00:14:50attack coming just hours after a diplomatic push for peace. Officials
00:14:54from Ukraine and Russia meeting in Istanbul in the first face to face
00:14:58talks in more than three years. The meeting lasting for 90 minutes and both
00:15:03sides agreeing to exchange 1000 prisoners of war. So no changes to the
00:15:08war. No ceasefire deal. Notably absent with their leaders, President Zelensky
00:15:13and President Putin. They were not part of these talks. The two sides still
00:15:17far apart on key issues. But what they did agree on is to continue talking and
00:15:23the Ukrainian defense minister saying the next step should be a meeting
00:15:26between Zelensky and Putin. President Trump weighing in, saying nothing will
00:15:30happen until he and Putin get together. Trump telling reporters they may meet
00:15:35soon the Kremlin this morning, saying so far the president has not contacted
00:15:39Putin. Gio. Okay, Lama. Thank you so much. And President Trump returning
00:15:43home overnight, concluding his whirlwind tour of the Middle East and
00:15:47making deals. ABC senior White House correspondent Selena Wang is following
00:15:50it all from Washington this morning. Good morning, Selena. Hey, good morning
00:15:54to you, Gio. President Trump says the U. S. Is getting closer to a nuclear
00:15:58deal with Iran, confirming the country has the U. S. Proposal but giving few
00:16:02details. Trump warned that Iran has to move quickly or something bad is going
00:16:07to happen. Trade between the two countries is currently significantly
00:16:10restricted. Trump says Iran wants to trade with the U. S. And that he's okay
00:16:15with it, adding he's using trade to settle scores. The president making
00:16:19those comments on his way back from his whirlwind Middle East trip visiting
00:16:23three countries in four days. But this trip was more focused on business deals
00:16:28than geopolitics, raising concerns about blurring the lines between diplomacy
00:16:33and personal financial interests. The Trump organization, now run by his sons,
00:16:38have projects in all three countries. The president visited in the U. A. E.
00:16:41The White House claims $200 billion in deals between the two nations in Saudi
00:16:46Arabia. Trump announced the country will invest $600 billion in the U. S. And
00:16:51while in Qatar, a nation Trump once accused of funding terrorism, the
00:16:55president signed a deal for the country to buy up to 210 American made jets
00:17:00from Boeing with Selena Wang for us. Thank you now to the Vatican, where the
00:17:04excitement is building for the installation mass of Pope Leo, the
00:17:08first American pontiff. ABC's Maggie really joins us now from Vatican City.
00:17:12Maggie, good morning.
00:17:15Hey, good morning. Yeah, we're less than 24 hours away from that installation
00:17:19mass of Pope Leo the 14th. And guys, while he's been Pope since he walked
00:17:23out onto that balcony last week, this mass marks the official start of his
00:17:27papacy, and we are expecting huge crowds for ST Peter's Square in the
00:17:31surrounding area to be filled to capacity. That's around 250,000 people,
00:17:36and we expect to see Pope Leo ride through that crowd in his popemobile for
00:17:41the first time. Again, this could be a chance for him to personally greet and
00:17:45bestow blessings onto the people that are waiting for him. Now, the start of
00:17:48the ceremony is deeply symbolic. Pope Leo will enter ST Peter's Basilica,
00:17:53and he'll pray before the tomb of ST Peter. The rest of the mass will take
00:17:56place outside, and it normally lasts around two hours. We also expect more
00:18:01than 150 delegations from around the world to be present at this mass,
00:18:04including Vice President J. D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio,
00:18:08along with their wives. Guys, remember, it was Vance, a Catholic who was here
00:18:11in Vatican City with his family just about a month ago, and he was one of
00:18:14the last people to meet with Pope Francis while he was alive. But at this
00:18:18point, it's still unclear if Pope Leo will be meeting with either Vance or
00:18:22Rubio tomorrow. It will be quite the spectacle tomorrow morning. Maggie
00:18:25Rulli, thank you. And ABC News Live will carry special coverage of Pope Leo the
00:18:3014th installation at the Vatican beginning Sunday morning at four a.m.
00:18:34Eastern, and you can stream it on Hulu, Disney Plus or most of your favorite
00:18:38streaming apps. And now we're gonna turn to the NBA playoffs. Huge game
00:18:41overnight. The Knicks with a solid victory, punching their ticket to the
00:18:44Eastern Conference Finals. ABC's Ashan Singh is here with a bit of a heavy
00:18:49heart. Ashan, good morning. That's right, Gio. I'm struggling today, but it
00:18:53was Knicks in six after all. After the New York Knicks put away the defending
00:18:57champion Boston Celtics soundly last night at Madison Square Garden, it was
00:19:02the moment the city had been waiting for, with thousands of Knicks fans
00:19:05faithfully piled outside of MSG to cheer on Jalen Brunson and the Knicks as
00:19:10they look to advance to their first Eastern Conference Finals for the first
00:19:13time in 25 years. Experts were calling it the most expensive home game in
00:19:17franchise history, with the cheapest ticket coming in close to 700 bucks. But
00:19:22last night, the Garden was rocking, and their guys did not disappoint. Four of
00:19:25the Knicks starters notched over 20 points, and a monster double-double from
00:19:29Carl Anthony Towns had the Knicks up big in Boston throughout the game. They'll
00:19:32now go on to face the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals. And guys,
00:19:36over in the West, we've got some big, big basketball going on. With a chance to go
00:19:41on to the Western Conference Finals, we have the two MVP finals in Shai Gilgis
00:19:46and Alexander for the Oklahoma City Thunder going up against Nikola Jokic of
00:19:50the Denver Nuggets, and they've got a chance to play the Minnesota Timberwolves
00:19:53in the Western Conference Finals. Guys. All right, you can catch all of that,
00:19:57that game right here on ABC at 3.30 Eastern. Oshin, thank you, and we are
00:20:01sorry to you in the box itself. The Celtics fans and my Warriors fans, we
00:20:05can just get together, hug it out, cry it out. Thank you, Oshin. Still coming up
00:20:11here on GMA, the proposal from the FAA that would impact millions of travelers
00:20:15through Newark Airport. Plus, the dramatic 9-1-1 tape as a Florida man
00:20:19survives a bear attack in his own backyard. And in our next hour, Emmy
00:20:23winner and star of The Shai, Lynn Whitfield, joins us live. Stay with us.
00:20:34Broken back grounder up the middle.
00:20:38Welcome back to GMA on this Saturday morning. This is the first official
00:20:41rivalry weekend in Major League Baseball. That means 15 matchups between
00:20:45longtime enemies. One of the big matchups, of course, the New York
00:20:49Subway Series, the Mets versus the Yankees. Former Yankee Juan Soto making
00:20:54his first trip to Yankee Stadium as a member of the, I feel like hated Mets
00:20:59is the wrong word, but you know, they're hardcore rivals. Yes, yes. Yesterday,
00:21:04as the crowd, they booed the Yankee, the Yankees. They're winning the game 166
00:21:09to 2. Sorry. A lot of numbers.
00:21:13What was the score? The Yankees booed the Mets. Got it. You got it. All right,
00:21:17good. All right. Thank you. Now let's take a look at some of the other big
00:21:21stories we're following here on the Saturday morning happening right now.
00:21:23After weeks of chaos and delays, the FAA wrapped up three days of meetings
00:21:27with airline representatives with the goal of cutting flights in and out of
00:21:31Newark Liberty International Airport. The FAA saying that the cuts will free
00:21:34up airspace and runway availability and allow for more reliability. Also, right
00:21:39now, the Supreme Court ruling against the Trump administration in deporting
00:21:43Venezuelan migrants using the Alien Enemies Act. The justices extending the
00:21:48ban. The Supreme Court temporarily imposed in an emergency ruling last
00:21:52month. The 7 to 2 majority, including Trump's three appointees, Justices
00:21:57Alito and Thomas joining in a dissent. And the FDA has cleared the first blood
00:22:01test to help diagnose Alzheimer's disease. The test looks for two
00:22:05proteins in the blood that are linked to the devastating disease. The test is
00:22:10for those over the age of 55 who are already showing symptoms there. And we
00:22:15are going to start this half hour with a look ahead at Memorial Day travel and
00:22:18your weekend travel plans. Lots of us ready to kick off the summer. We season
00:22:22let's bring in travel expert Katie Nassar. Oh, for some do's and don'ts on
00:22:25planning that perfect getaway. Katie, good morning. Welcome back. Yeah, so
00:22:29much for having me back on G. M. A. All right, this is a real record setter,
00:22:33right? 45 million people expected to travel next weekend, most of them by car.
00:22:37So help us with traffic. How do we avoid it? Yeah, correct you. 87% of
00:22:42people traveling from Memorial Day are going to hit the road. So we want people
00:22:46to do their best and try to avoid that late afternoon Friday peak window of a
00:22:51starting around 2 30 in major metro areas. Triple A has a really handy
00:22:56major metro traffic guide, and it basically gives you based on the city
00:23:00or the city that you're closest to when to avoid. And again, you know,
00:23:04most people are gonna be traveling back on that Monday. So if you do have to
00:23:07travel back on that Monday via car, try to go early. Okay, so helpful there and
00:23:12traveling by car isn't the only way people are getting around. What else do
00:23:15you recommend? You know, interestingly enough, we've seen an uptick in the
00:23:19other category. So that's buses, trains, cruises, specifically amongst younger
00:23:24demographics. 8% increase year over year in that other category. So, you
00:23:29know, especially when you're looking at cruises, the affordability is there,
00:23:32and it's sort of a no brainer. You know, you just sort of step on the ship, set
00:23:36it and forget it. All of your activities, your restaurants, whatnot is all taken
00:23:40care of. You don't have decision paralysis, where I think a lot of people
00:23:43in travel planning tend to not like it because of that. They don't know there's
00:23:48so many choices. So many hard time. I've been telling you I have a hard time
00:23:51planning. Where do I go? Where is it cheap? A lot of money. Exactly, exactly.
00:23:57So, yeah, look at alternative forms of transport, not just road trips, not just
00:24:01flights. There's other categories out there. Ever since our first Disney cruise,
00:24:05I've told my husband that's the only way we should travel, and it's not just
00:24:08because Disney is the parent company of ABC News. So fun for kids, though. I remember going on a Disney cruise as a
00:24:14youngster, younger than I am now. No, I'm kidding. But yeah, I mean, really, it is so
00:24:18memorable for kids. And if you are flying, this is the first big holiday after the
00:24:22real ID deadline. What's your baseline advice? Well, you know, for all of us that
00:24:27do have a real ID, like I do, which you all shamed me last time. Got it in the mail. Yeah, you know, look, the TSA is not going to be
00:24:36cracking down, and this is really going to be the first test for the real ID.
00:24:39Best piece of advice that we are giving people over at Going, just give yourself
00:24:43a little bit extra time. Don't fret if you don't have a real ID. They are
00:24:47allowing people through, but you do need to go through an extra step in
00:24:51verification through security. So just give yourself a little bit more window
00:24:54of time. I'm putting my travel dad hat on. You need a little bit more time at the airport.
00:24:58Okay, so you haven't made a plan yet, if you haven't made a plan yet. What do you
00:25:03do? Where are the deals? Where can we find them? Because I know you're the deal
00:25:05expert, so find them. Yeah, you know, Memorial Day is really about short-haul
00:25:09trips. So places like New York to Chicago for one 48-round trip. Chicago comes
00:25:14alive in the summer. Or maybe you're based on the West Coast. You can go from
00:25:17San Francisco to Arcata. Explore that Redwood National Park. I spent a
00:25:22Memorial Day there once, and it is fairytale-like. Super beautiful. Or maybe
00:25:26you do want to take an international trip. You can go from Miami to Guatemala
00:25:30City for one 67-round trip. I was just in Antigua, Guatemala. Volcanoes everywhere.
00:25:36How cool. Beautiful city. Really, really great for a short period of time. So, you
00:25:41know, for three, two to three-day trip. Maybe four, if you can. Yeah, I mean, there's so
00:25:47many options out there. I saw Iceland on your list, too. Iceland is on the list, as
00:25:50well. It's roughly a five-hour flight from Boston for 97, I believe it was.
00:25:56Crazy good deal. And that's last-minute. I mean, Memorial Day is right around the
00:26:00corner, so if you have a little bit of time, you can go a little bit farther
00:26:03afield. That's great. And a little bit of flexibility, too. Yeah, we found all those
00:26:06round-trip on the going app, and those are on full service. Those are not on
00:26:09budget carriers. Wow. Katie, as always, we appreciate it.
00:26:13Thanks a lot for having me. Happy travels. Here you got it. A man's frantic 911 call.
00:26:17The police say that he was bitten by a bear in his own backyard while trying to
00:26:21protect his dog. ABC's Faith Abubeh listened to that call and has more on
00:26:26what neighbors are saying now. Faith, good morning. Yeah, good morning to you,
00:26:30Wood. It was a difficult 911 call to hear. The homeowner frantic and just
00:26:34incredulous that a bear mauled him in his own backyard, leaving him with, quote,
00:26:39a hole in his leg.
00:26:43Can you aim the front? You know, I just got bit by a bear in my backyard this
00:26:47morning. The dramatic 911 call of a Florida man just moments after he was
00:26:51attacked in his backyard by a bear. They try to check my dog, and I went to
00:26:57rescue my dog, and it hit me in my leg. The grisly encounter happening in the
00:27:01wee hours of Thursday morning. This ring camera video captured by a neighbor
00:27:06showing two bears playing with the trash bag just before the attack. The 45
00:27:10year old victim telling 911 dispatchers he heard his dog Yelp in
00:27:15his backyard. When he went to check on him, he came face to face with the bear
00:27:19in my leg, my left leg, my whole left leg. He charged me again after he bit
00:27:25me. I kicked him in the face and I ran as fast as I could in the house. The
00:27:32Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission saying the bear left his
00:27:36property and has not been seen since. They're now investigating the incident
00:27:40and have placed a trap at the home. First responders transporting the man
00:27:44to a nearby hospital. The incident leaving neighbors on edge. They say the
00:27:48overdevelopment of the neighborhood has led to recent bear sightings. It
00:27:53shouldn't have happened. The bears have no place, no place to go anymore.
00:27:59And you know, despite this homeowner's injuries, he is still incredibly
00:28:02fortunate. Just last week, the state of Florida recorded its first ever deadly
00:28:07bear attack. An 89 year old man and his dog killed. Officials say bear
00:28:11encounters are becoming less unusual in florida and they recommend securing
00:28:16outdoor trash cans to keep them at bay. Gio, that is absolutely terrifying.
00:28:21Gosh, and faith. Great to have you here in studio. We appreciate it. Good to
00:28:25see you now on G. M. A. The new W. N. B. A. Season tipping off to overnight
00:28:30and what promises to be an exciting and competitive season. ESPN's Andrea
00:28:34carter joins us with more on who we should be keeping our eyes on. Welcome
00:28:38back, Andrea. We always love to see you. Let's start with page beckers. The
00:28:43number one draft pick the Dallas wings. They lost last night against the
00:28:46Minnesota links beckers scoring 10 points. How do you see this transition
00:28:50going for her and what can we expect?
00:28:53You know, I feel like how do you see this transition going? I see this
00:28:58transition growing for page beckers and the Dallas wings. Page beckers is going
00:29:02to get more and more comfortable, more and more aggressive, but expect a lot
00:29:07of excitement. Page beckers has so many fans. She is so beloved across the
00:29:13country. She's playing alongside a ricket goomba wally. So I expect those
00:29:16two to have a ton of great chemistry, but it's going to be a season where
00:29:20they have to grow. Not only page as a player, but Dallas as a team expected
00:29:24to get better and better from here in page efficiency and aggression. Two
00:29:29things she absolutely nailed at the end of her college career. Those things
00:29:34are going to come along to the start of her W. N. B. A. Career. And Andrea, I
00:29:37said before the break that you were here in studio, but of course you're
00:29:40not because you're on the road. You're very, very busy. So we appreciate you
00:29:43traveling all across the country for ESPN. So listen, the Liberty won it all
00:29:47last year, and ESPN really has them as the number one pick right now again
00:29:51this year. But teams like the lens links, they're out for revenge.
00:29:55The Minnesota links are absolutely out for revenge, and the New York Liberty
00:29:59added a couple of pieces. So I understand them being the top pick for
00:30:03winning the championship again. But look out for the Minnesota links. That
00:30:08is a team led by Nafisa Collier, who had an incredible season. She was in
00:30:12the MDP conversation. This Minnesota team had a ton of incredible team
00:30:17chemistry. They didn't make a lot of changes to their roster. They're
00:30:21looking to come back with the same fire, the same energy and the same
00:30:24connectivity to each other on the floor on both ends. They're looking to get
00:30:29that championship opportunity again and this time win it. Some calls didn't go
00:30:34their way in the last game of the finals that they think should have went
00:30:37their way. They kind of feel like it was stolen from them a little bit. So
00:30:40the links are definitely out for revenge. You're exactly right. All
00:30:43right, Andrea, and there's another big name player. A lot of expectations
00:30:47going into this season. What should we be watching for?
00:30:51Well, it's incredible that we haven't talked about this player yet because
00:30:54every WNBA NBA conversation really starts with Caitlin Clark because of
00:30:59the season that she had last year. Caitlin Clark, rookie of the year. We
00:31:03talked about Paige being the number one rookie this year. The number one pick
00:31:06last season was Caitlin Clark, and she had a phenomenal record breaking year.
00:31:12Caitlin Clark, as a rookie, broke WNBA records that were set by veterans, and
00:31:18the Indiana Fever have added pieces around her veteran pieces, pieces that
00:31:22match her skill set. Indiana is in win now mode and all eyes are on Caitlin
00:31:27Clark to see how she builds off of her record breaking year last year. Okay, so
00:31:31given all of that, Andrea, and I know we're early, the season just got going,
00:31:36but two teams who could be title contenders.
00:31:40Oh, you know what's amazing is this season there are quite a few teams that
00:31:45I think could be title contenders. I'm going to give you ones that are
00:31:48different, ones that people might not expect. The one is the Indiana Fever. I
00:31:52just told you they're in win now mode. They added veteran pieces like Dawana
00:31:56Bonner to play alongside Caitlin Clark, Natasha Howard playing alongside Caitlin
00:32:00Clark with the pieces they already have. Look out for the Fever. We've already
00:32:04talked about Minnesota in New York. Of course, the Aces, they wanted a couple
00:32:07seasons ago. So my sleeper team is Seattle. I'm just saying
00:32:14Seattle. No one was paying attention to the Minnesota Lynx at the start of last
00:32:18season. Towards the middle of the season, the Lynx were like, no one's
00:32:21talking about us. We could say the same thing about Seattle this season.
00:32:25Potentially they've got Nneka Agumake, who you all know, Chinay is her sister.
00:32:29That's the I'm all for Nneka Agumake, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Gabby Williams
00:32:34played in the Olympics. They have a rookie in Dominique Molunga, who can
00:32:38dunk with ease. I'm just saying, look out for. Okay. All right. There's
00:32:44sleepless in Seattle. Now we got a sleeper in Seattle. Andrea Carter, as
00:32:48always, we appreciate you. Thank you. And of course, you can catch the New
00:32:53York Liberty taking on the Las Vegas Aces and the Chicago Sky versus the
00:32:57Indiana Fever starting at one right here on ABC and ESPN. Now, with our play of
00:33:02the day and the pup who can't wait to say hello, take a look at this balcony
00:33:06here. Someone has written a big sign. Shout, Max, if you are lucky, an angel
00:33:11will appear. So let's run the video.
00:33:16Max.
00:33:19Oh, there's Max right there. The angelic golden retriever. What a totally
00:33:25little sweetheart there. Chalky face. This video has more than two million
00:33:29likes on instagram. One person speaking for many, saying I'd walk down that
00:33:33road a thousand times just for a glimpse of that angel. It's a smile.
00:33:40Somebody was looking for me. So coming up here in our second hour, GMA cover
00:33:44story. New guidance released by the American College of Obstetricians and
00:33:47Gynecologists on managing pain during common in office procedures. Stick
00:33:52around.
00:33:54Good morning, America. It's our second hour tornado outbreak. Oh my God. At
00:34:00least 16 people killed as violent spring storms sweep across the
00:34:04Midwest, bringing severe weather to 90 million americans from texas to new
00:34:09jersey. This church in ST louis crumbling. The extreme weather is now
00:34:13moving here through downtown Indianapolis team coverage of these
00:34:17dangerous storms and where they're headed next. We're gearing up for the
00:34:22live action Lilo and Stitch movie. Stitch is hitting the road and he has a
00:34:26special message for us.
00:34:28What running America? My name stitch.
00:34:36Rihanna's music come back. The superstar dropping her first song in three years
00:34:40for the Smurfs movie.
00:34:50And the chicks are saying hello to goodbye. Earl.
00:34:54Yeah, announcing a jukebox musical.
00:34:59And we're in a good mood this morning. Lynn Whitfield is live in Times Square
00:35:05talking about the new season of the shy terrorizes city long enough women. We
00:35:11have to do something and she's saying good morning America.
00:35:17Mhm. It's saturday morning. This is G. M. A. And oh, it is. Good morning
00:35:25America. Energy here. That's right. Emmy winning actress of course. And you
00:35:31know her from the shy and we cannot wait to talk to her about season seven
00:35:36of the show. Shaking things up. Absolutely looking forward to that.
00:35:39Also we have a lot of news to get to including the massive manhunt underway
00:35:43right now for the inmates who escaped from a new Orleans jail. Yeah, you've
00:35:47got to see that video. But we do begin this morning with the deadly outbreak
00:35:50of severe weather from the heartland to the east coast. Now over 20 million
00:35:54americans are under alert for severe weather. A. B. C. S. Alex stone joins
00:35:58us live from Clear Creek indiana with the very latest. Good morning again
00:36:01Alex
00:36:03Janae. Good morning again to you. This was the post office in town and
00:36:06there's not a whole lot left. They tell us this is where everybody came
00:36:09together. This was their meeting point already. They're beginning to clean up
00:36:13and to get a lot of this debris into this dumpster here. This just one
00:36:17tornado of many in this region
00:36:21overnight deadly storms from the heartland to the east coast bringing
00:36:24heavy floods, powerful winds, large hail and tornadoes to over 90 million
00:36:31americans.
00:36:33Parts of Kentucky shredded at least nine dead in laurel county. This
00:36:38neighborhood torn apart by a tornado. Home after home reduced to rubble. For
00:36:43first responders searching for survivors. We saw stuff falling and
00:36:46next thing we knew he said most of the house was gone. The governor there
00:36:50declaring a state of emergency in Missouri. At least seven deaths across
00:36:54the state. It's all debris in the road in ST louis Missouri. The damage
00:36:59extensive. Oh my God. In the houses. Oh my God. Debris littering the roads,
00:37:05trees uprooted like this massive one strewn across the street. At least four
00:37:10dead in the city due to the storm. One killed after part of this church
00:37:13crumbled to the ground and in Illinois, this video capturing a twister forming
00:37:19in Marion, a dust storm in Bloomington consuming the sky roads barely visible
00:37:24for drivers navigating their way through. We were across the border in
00:37:28Indiana as a storm raged on. The extreme weather is now moving here
00:37:32through downtown Indianapolis. There's a concert down the street. People are
00:37:36taking shelter in the lobbies of the buildings to get out of this.
00:37:40The northeast also hit hard as those storms pushed east floodwaters
00:37:43overtaking parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, damaging winds ripping
00:37:48through Virginia, toppling trees and leaving at least two dead.
00:37:54So many people impacted the number of dead going up and now the problem being
00:37:58power lines that are down everywhere. Over half a million people are without
00:38:01electricity. These are actually cable lines right here, but similar
00:38:04situation. They've got to get them back up. They're working on that today
00:38:07while they're cleaning up all over the area today. All right, Alex, thank you
00:38:11for your reporting and tomorrow we'll have a look at where the storms are
00:38:14moving coming up in just a bit now to the urgent manhunt this morning
00:38:18following a mass escape from a new Orleans jail. Authorities say 10 men
00:38:22got out. At least three have already been recaptured. ABC's Maria Villarreal
00:38:27joins us now with the latest Maria. Good morning.
00:38:32Hey, good morning. Wit. As you mentioned, three of the 10 have been
00:38:35captured, one of them actually near a hotel in the French quarter. I mean,
00:38:39this happened in the heart of New Orleans, a tourist magnet leaving the
00:38:43community on edge. But we do know that the manhunt is intensified for the
00:38:48remaining suspects. Several of them have been charged with murder. All of
00:38:52them are considered armed and dangerous. Now, new images and video
00:38:56are emerging from inside that New Orleans jail where 10 inmates dug
00:39:00their way out. Surveillance video showing two of the men rigorously
00:39:04pulling on a cell door that police say leads outside. Then you see 10 men
00:39:09quickly run out of the building. Authorities say the group took
00:39:13advantage of defective locks on their usual cells and then making their way
00:39:18to a specific cell, removing a bolted toilet from the wall to create their
00:39:23great escape. Top officials believe they got help from inside someone
00:39:28within the jail system. There were no deputies assigned to the unit where
00:39:32this happened for some reason, and authorities say the technician assigned
00:39:36to keep an eye on surveillance cameras actually walked away when this happened
00:39:40to get food. The sheriff is adamant this group had help inside and outside the
00:39:45jail, and they're going to keep digging to find out how this all happened. We
00:39:49do know so far three of the jail employees have been suspended and local
00:39:54schools and universities. They are on high alert right now. They're adding
00:39:57more security on campus and at graduation ceremonies that are
00:40:01expected to happen all throughout this weekend. Gio, just a wild story in so
00:40:06many ways. All right, Maria, thank you so much. It is also day two now of the
00:40:10transit strike affecting hundreds of thousands of people in New Jersey. New
00:40:13York talks breaking down between union leaders and New Jersey Transit
00:40:17Management on Thursday. Better pay for employees seems to be the issue here.
00:40:22The union saying its members are the lowest paid of any major passenger
00:40:26railroad, despite operating the third largest train system in the country. The
00:40:30last New Jersey transit strike, which was some 40 years ago, lasted about
00:40:35three weeks today. All right, Gio, the Secret Service is set to interview
00:40:39former FBI director James Comey this after a photo he posted online.
00:40:43According to sources, Comey's instagram post showing this seashells that
00:40:49appeared to form the numbers 8647. Trump administration officials claim
00:40:54that's a call to 86 or kill the president. Comey says he didn't realize
00:41:00those numbers could be associated with violence. He's since deleted the post
00:41:05with. All right, let's turn now to the NBA playoffs. A huge game overnight.
00:41:09The Knicks with a solid victory, punching their ticket to the Eastern
00:41:12Conference finals. ABC's Ashan Singh is here with more. You're from Boston. I
00:41:16see you're still wearing a little green, a dark green for the dark mood of the
00:41:21loss. But yeah, a little bit of a forced smile. But it was a good game. It was a
00:41:26it was an okay game.
00:41:30Something's got it handed to them a bit as the Knicks New York Knicks fans are
00:41:34celebrating because their Knicks are back in the Eastern Conference finals
00:41:37for the first time in 25 years. It was an all around effort for the New York
00:41:41Knicks last night as they handedly beat the defending champion Boston Celtics,
00:41:45beating by as many as 41 points during the game. A stark difference from Game
00:41:49five, where the Knicks had a chance to close it out in Boston. But experts
00:41:53calling last night's matchup the most expensive home game in franchise
00:41:56history. The Knicks got it done this time, though, with four of the Knicks
00:41:59starters notching over 20 points in a monster game from Carl Anthony Towns,
00:42:03who had a double double. They'll now go on to face the Indiana Pacers, who have
00:42:07been waiting for them in a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference
00:42:10semifinals. And guys over in the West, the Oklahoma City Thunder will have a
00:42:14shot to face off the Denver Nuggets in Game seven with a chance to play the
00:42:17Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference finals. That'll be tomorrow
00:42:20on abc right here. 3 30 p.m. Eastern. I feel your pain, though, you know, my
00:42:26warriors there. They're out. You know what it is, man. We were heading into
00:42:29the summer already. It was shot last weekend of auction with all the Knicks
00:42:34fans opening up his shirt to show the
00:42:37Oh, man, you're living out down. Hey, man, you gotta pull up when it's your
00:42:42time, right? I'll do it again. I do it again. Appreciate you. Always a loyal
00:42:46fan. All right, coming up here in our G. M. A. Morning menu. Important new
00:42:50health information for women. What you need to know. Also ahead here. The
00:42:53shy's Lynn Whitfield is here. We're talking the new season of the show and
00:42:57taking a trip down memory lane, and it's the last day of our beauty bonanza.
00:43:03That beauty right there. Tory Johnson has the deals you don't want to miss.
00:43:06We'll be right back here on G. M. A.
00:43:13We're back now with our G. M. A. Cover story. New developments this morning
00:43:16when it comes to women's health. Dr Edith Bracho Sanchez, a medical
00:43:19doctor here in New York City at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, is here
00:43:23to break everything down. Thank you for being here, Dr Edith. We always
00:43:27appreciate you. Let's start with something that you say is so important.
00:43:30It's new guidance released by the American College of Obstetricians and
00:43:33Gynecologists on managing pain during common in office procedures like I. U.
00:43:37D. Insurgents and biopsies. Tell us about that. Yes, it is an
00:43:41acknowledgement that what women go through during these procedures is
00:43:44serious and should be taken seriously. So the American College of
00:43:47obstetricians and gynecologists saying the physician should partner with
00:43:51patients to offer a wide range of options during gynecological
00:43:55procedures like I. U. D. Insertions like cervical biopsies. Some of those
00:43:58options may include creams. They may include sprays. They may include
00:44:02injections. But the call again is to not underestimate the pain that
00:44:07patients go through to take us seriously. And it's an acknowledgement
00:44:10that listen, we haven't always been the best at acknowledging and
00:44:14appropriately treating women's pain. So a great, great step. And for some
00:44:18patients that can almost feel like gaslighting when they're saying that
00:44:21they're in pain and the doctors maybe not taking it seriously. Absolutely.
00:44:24Now and also the first study, it's a new way of analyzing mammograms. So
00:44:28what does that mean? So I love this so much. Well, because what it does is it
00:44:33says, let's use radiomics, which is a technique that allows researchers to
00:44:38extract information from images that have already been done. So we're not
00:44:42putting women through additional tests or procedures. What we're doing is
00:44:44applying mathematical algorithms to images that have already been done. And
00:44:48what they did was using this technique, classify women's breast tissue density
00:44:54or texture, I should say, into six different categories and then match
00:44:57them to future cancer risk. The hope, of course, being that this will allow
00:45:02early detection and then allow us to intervene a little early, but very
00:45:06exciting technology. So what does that mean for women? So it means really that
00:45:10we're going to be able to, again, without undergoing additional testing,
00:45:14without undergoing additional procedures, potentially detect cancer
00:45:18earlier. And what's exciting is that this was true regardless of BMI, breast
00:45:24tissue density and also race. So the results and the ability to match this
00:45:29to future cancer risk, depending on tissue textures, was true for both
00:45:33black and white women. Important updates there. And real quick, I know
00:45:37we're running out of time, but can we bring in little William because I think
00:45:41it is incredible, Dr. Edith, that you joined us here on a weekend. And you're
00:45:45also a mom, too. You are a busy doctor. I am, mommy. I am, mommy. And can I just say, oh my gosh, of course, can I just say one thing? We're
00:45:53talking about very exciting things for women and for women's health. But the
00:45:57call is that we can't really use this treatment and this early detection if
00:46:01you don't make it to the physician to begin with, right? Great point. Come see
00:46:05us. And everyone who was a woman in their life who loves a woman, right?
00:46:07All the moms out there. Just make it. Please make it. Let's keep up with our
00:46:11screenings because it matters. Super right from the mother there. Thank you
00:46:17so much, Dr. Edith, for being super woman for us. Another little will
00:46:21him. We wear the same size. That was my next jersey. That was my next jersey.
00:46:28He was wearing equally adorable. Thank you. Thank you. That's what I'm going
00:46:32for. All right, we're saying hello to pop news this morning, but we're also
00:46:35saying goodbye, Earl. Hit it.
00:46:47Whoo! That is the song that Rolling Stone ranked as the 23rd best country
00:46:52music song of all time last year. So how do you make one of the greatest songs
00:46:55of all time even better? You give it the Broadway treatment. The chicks are
00:46:59executive producing a jukebox musical called Goodbye, Earl, featuring all of
00:47:04their biggest hits. And as if that's not exciting enough, the script comes
00:47:08from Taylor Jenkins. Read the author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. The
00:47:13new musical. I was really that's a Broadway reaction. I'll have you to need
00:47:18to work on your reaction. It's about two friends who unite to try to do away
00:47:23with one of their abusive husbands, and it's said to have Thelma and Louise
00:47:26vibes. Thank you. Thank you very much. The chicks catalog, by the way, prime
00:47:34for this. I don't know what's taking them so long, but I'm so excited for
00:47:36that. All right. In movie news, we're saying aloha to stitch ahead of his big
00:47:40screen live action debut, and y'all stitch has an exclusive message for us
00:47:44this morning straight from the shores of Hawaii. Take a look.
00:47:47Hi, Ralph. Good morning. I have a stitch pop and pop. There's rely pop
00:48:02up next. Wait, I'm sorry. That's epic. Hi, Will. Forget Meryl Streep. All
00:48:13right. So where is stitch gonna pop up next? Well, he's been busy causing some
00:48:16chaos at a Cinemark in California. There is taking a convertible for a
00:48:20test drive. He's also been putting the pop into popcorn. You can see him. Oh,
00:48:26yeah, there he is. But next up on his travel itinerary, G. M. A. The stars of
00:48:31Lilo and Stitch are taking over our studio ahead of the big day when Lilo
00:48:34and Stitch hits theaters this Friday, May 23rd. I don't have no mean family,
00:48:39he said. Hi, Will. I'm so excited. Thank you. Thank you. All right. Finally, it's
00:48:44been 157 days since Taylor Swift is posted on instagram. But who's counting
00:48:48even more alarming? It's been 115 days since I've talked about her here in pop
00:48:52news. But don't worry, the Swifties are certain that Taylor is making an
00:48:55announcement imminently. This feels like deja vu. It's because I've done this
00:48:59exact thing before. All right, right now she has 12 items on her website listed
00:49:03at 26% off, which has fans thinking she might be announcing her 12th studio
00:49:07album on the 26th. But what's happening on the 26th? The American Music Awards,
00:49:12also known as the A. M. A. S. And Taylor's website recently redesigned to
00:49:16feature apparel, music, accessories and sale in that order. A. M. A. S. Plus her
00:49:21official fan page. Taylor Nation recently tweeted lyrics. But if you can
00:49:26look the capitalized letters there, A. M. A. S. Taylor became the most awarded
00:49:32artist in A. M. A. S. History in 2019 when she performed an epic medley of her
00:49:36hits right here in A. B. C. So will she announce something at the A. M. A. S.
00:49:39this year? I'll keep you posted. Detective Will Gams. Yeah, I know. Also
00:49:45magnifying glass. That's that's where Janae has her. Ooh, I appreciate the
00:49:51sound effects and all of you. Thank you. Appreciate it. All right. So Janae deals

00:53:28Welcome back. We are on GMA here with the one and only Rihanna, the superstar
00:53:31dropping friend of mine. Her first new song in three years. It's on the

00:53:41fans will have to keep waiting for her much anticipated ninth album. But the
00:53:45good news is, this is a dance track here, so it's perfect for your summer
00:53:49playlist. We hear that beat. We're ready. There we go. Music we can get
00:53:53from reality. Yes, we will. Here's some of the other top headlines that we're
00:53:56following right now. Numbers show that the Texas measles outbreak shows signs
00:54:00of slowing down, but experts warned that the health emergency is not yet over.
00:54:04As of Friday, there were 1024 confirmed measles cases in the U. S. Which is an
00:54:10increase of 23 since last week. Doctors saying quote, there's a lot of global
00:54:15measles activity right now and singer Chris Brown remains in the U. K. Prison
00:54:19after his arrest Thursday in Manchester. On Friday, a judge decided to keep the
00:54:23Grammy winner behind bars until his June 13th court appearance. Brown is
00:54:28accused of assaulting a producer at a nightclub in London in 2023 and in the
00:54:32NHL playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs keeping their season alive by beating
00:54:36the Florida Panthers to to nothing last night. Game seven is Sunday night
00:54:40in Toronto tonight. You can catch the Winnipeg Jets. They're taking on the
00:54:44Dallas Stars in Game six, the Western Conference semi finals right here on
00:54:48ABC at eight p.m. All right. Our next guest is an Emmy award winning actress
00:54:53known for playing strong, leading women from Josephine Baker to Lady May
00:54:57Greenleaf. And now Lynn Whitfield is back as Alicia and season seven of the
00:55:02shy. Welcome. It's great to have you here. So we're just seven seasons. Just
00:55:09incredible. Why do you think this show about Chicago south side has resonated
00:55:13with people so much because it's about the south side and and Chicago is a
00:55:18major character in it. But also we've watched these young actors, these young
00:55:23characters grow up and it's endeared America to them. The stories are real.
00:55:30Most people can find themselves in at least one of these characters and it's
00:55:35just a testament to the fact that our stories matter and it's very exciting.
00:55:40Seven seasons. All right, lean away. Yeah, exactly that. And your character,
00:55:46Alicia, as Whit mentioned, is just one of a long line of strong female roles
00:55:50that you've played Lady May in the own series Greenleaf Josephine Baker, who
00:55:55you posted a tribute to on International Women's Day, saying that
00:55:58her life and legacy profoundly impacted your own. Yes. Talk to us about
00:56:03what you call acting as a service work. Well, I feel that it's really important
00:56:10that people understand strong black women of color. So I take it on. I
00:56:16protect them like, you know, I am very conscientious on my women and I think
00:56:23their voices need to be heard because, you know, if you're a man and you and
00:56:27you're, say, controlling or whatever, they say, yeah, he's really holding his
00:56:31ground, you know. But if you're a woman, you know, it's the B thing. You know,
00:56:36you're difficult. So I think it's very important that we understand why women
00:56:44are the way they are. Yeah. Because, I mean, what queen is going to give up a
00:56:47kingdom easily? Come on, please. Exactly. Exactly. Like nobody is. Yeah. And
00:56:53Queen Elizabeth wouldn't do it. So why should Alicia do it? Why should Josephine
00:56:57Baker do it? Why should Lady May do it? Yeah. So it's a service job to share
00:57:04humanity and to share the truth of human beings. Like if you don't, I don't
00:57:10want to fake the funk. Yeah. I want people to really understand who these
00:57:15people are. And so it makes me feel like I am of service to shed light on it.
00:57:21Well, should we take a look at your fabulous work right now? Let's do. Oh,
00:57:24God, I hope there's a scene I like. Chuck said they did it.
00:57:31You sure?
00:57:35Do you think he would do something like that?
00:57:40I do.
00:57:43Bring it to me.
00:57:45Oh, bring him to me. And the eyes, the look that you bring there. What can fans
00:57:50expect in season seven now? It's a roller coaster ride. A lot of questions
00:57:54will be answered and more will be posed. Um, there'll be a lot of vying for
00:58:00power. Uh, the women are gonna do their very best to take control of this
00:58:06outside of Chicago, and you're gonna see a lot of relationships working
00:58:11themselves out and all that. It's just a human. It's it's the whole ball of
00:58:17wax. Yes, you're gonna be entertained. You're gonna be shocked and lots of
00:58:22questions. Maybe happy, maybe disappointed. You know, the human
00:58:27experiences. You said, Well, that's it. Yeah, like people are really cool. We
00:58:32need to, you know, really appreciate humanity more and respect our
00:58:38differences more and enjoy our differences more. So, you know, it's
00:58:45gonna be something. I'm kind of I'm very excited, and I'm sorry I can't
00:58:50tell you more, but okay. All right, well, we will stand by and look forward
00:58:53to that. But while we have you here, we do like to dig into the archives from
00:58:56time to time. So we have a little Lynn Whitfield. Fun fact here. You're in
00:59:00Lionel Richie's running with the night music video. What? Back in 1983. There
00:59:07it is. What do you remember about this moment? What the hell are you talking
00:59:13about? 1981. Shut up. Okay, let's see.
00:59:21I'm done.
00:59:23There is that we were.
00:59:27Oh, my God. Am I? Where am I? Am I cute? What would you
00:59:34what would you say to yourself?
00:59:36Oh, you still got it.
00:59:38Oh, my goodness. Could you imagine all these years later? What? You're okay.
00:59:43We can. We stopped with all the years.
00:59:47I already made the mistake. I'm sorry. I've raised my voice. Wait, just honor
00:59:54you. What do you mean? Incredible work that you have done in this little bit
00:59:59of time. Could you have imagined to build a career like you have? Oh, my
01:00:05God, I want so much more. I still see over you. I still see all the things
01:00:10that I want to do, you know, and so all I have to do is, um, you know, stick
01:00:16with the old therapy. Prime. I hear this. A new thing. Try that. Just keep
01:00:21it tight. Keep my wits about me. Not take myself too seriously and move it
01:00:28all forward. That is incredible. You are. You are gorgeous in and out. You
01:00:32really are. Yeah, the energy you brought into the studio. Let's have a
01:00:37moment.
01:00:40We love it. And in the sleeves, say it all. No, you know,
01:00:47we feel our pleasure. Thank you for coming in. Of course, you can catch the
01:00:51new episodes of the shy on Fridays on Paramount plus with Showtime. We're
01:00:56gonna be talking about this for days because this was incredible. Now, with
01:00:59Disneyland's 70th anniversary celebration, our rule. Reeve brings us
01:01:04the festivities at the park.
01:01:07Hey, good morning, guys. It's hard to remember a time without Disneyland,
01:01:11right? Because it's been around for 70 years, seven decades of magic at the
01:01:16happiest place on Earth. And we're gonna take you behind the scenes to
01:01:19introduce you to some of those people who make the magic happen and have been
01:01:22doing so for decades. Take a look. All who come to this happy place. Welcome.
01:01:30For seven decades, Disneyland Resort has welcomed people of all ages and
01:01:34from all over the globe to experience everything the park has to offer.
01:01:42And this morning, Disneyland's 70th anniversary celebration kicks off with
01:01:47the all new World of Color Happiness Show at California Adventure Park,
01:01:51hosted by inside out joy and her fellow emotions. And when we all shine
01:01:56together like that,
01:01:58what a rainbow and the return of the paint the night parade at Disneyland
01:02:03Park, lighting up Main Street USA with more than a million led lights. The 70
01:02:09years of happiness that have unfolded here, thanks in part to Disneyland's
01:02:13incredible cast members, like firefighter Hank Amin. I always say a
01:02:19smile will bring a smile at 92 years young. Hank holds the title as the
01:02:25current longest standing employee of the Walt Disney Company, celebrating 62
01:02:30years of service last fall. When somebody tells me that I've been here
01:02:34that long, I just have to pitch myself. I said, Really? Hank first made his
01:02:39magic as a skipper on the Jungle Cruise. Are you doing guest with a plot after
01:02:44we get to the dock? And I said, Well, I must have done a pretty good job. He
01:02:48went on to join the Disneyland Fire Department in 1959 and even recalls
01:02:53meeting Walt Disney. He asked me how I like working here. How could could we do
01:02:58to make a difference? And what a beautiful memory that was. I think my
01:03:02lucky stars and I was blessed for the Lugo family. Disney is part of their
01:03:06DNA. Six members of the family all work here at the Disneyland Resort, a legacy
01:03:12that started 19 years ago with Chef Juan Lugo Nunez. When I first came from
01:03:17Mexico, I said one day I'm gonna like to work here. And then 19 years later,
01:03:21I'm still here. The executive chef at California Adventure says he hopes his
01:03:25food tells a story with every bite. We're Disney. This is special. So we
01:03:30make people happy. And then I do that through food. And now his sons have
01:03:34joined the Disney family to Marvin is an order cook and one junior, a public
01:03:39relations associate. One of my favorite things to do with my dad is make him go
01:03:43on rides. Love making him go on the Incredible. So I love having him go out
01:03:47of his comfort zone. The Lugo family and fireman Hank, just a handful of the
01:03:51many thousands bringing magic to life at Disneyland for the past 70 years and
01:03:57into the future. We're just getting started.
01:04:02What a remarkable legacy those folks have left. They're part of the 70 year
01:04:06history here at Disneyland. The celebrations are just beginning.
