02:2645 million Americans on alert right now.
02:29In fact, here in the east, a tornado watch at this hour from Washington, D.C., right up through Philadelphia.

04:00While south of Atlanta...
04:01Don't move.
04:02Rachel Peters recording in the passenger seat as they nearly drive right into a tornado crossing Interstate 75.
04:09Homes in this Henry County neighborhood leveled.
04:12Families that rode it out say they could feel the walls shake.
04:16I ran for the closet and took cover.
04:19I got all my hands and knees, covered my head, and just started praying.
04:21I survived the tornado.
04:23My son, he survived.
04:27Trey Chaney says he and his 18-year-old son Malachi were sucked out of their home.
04:32In a split second, my house is gone.
04:34I just got out of the hospital.
04:36I got this bruise on my head.
04:37Chaney, an actor who once starred on HBO's The Wire, says Malachi has broken ribs and a broken bone in his face.
04:45And, David, there's a flood watch for much of the Northeast as those storms continue to move in tonight.
04:51David?
04:51Yeah, it's going to be a rough night ahead, Steph.
04:53Let's get right to Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg of our New York station WABC.
04:56And, Lee, I know you're tracking these tornado watches up right now.
04:59David, heavy downpours are lifting toward D.C. as we speak.
05:02There's a tornado warning just to the west across northern Virginia.
05:06The tornado watch goes from North Carolina all the way into southern New Jersey until midnight.
05:10Let's time this.
05:11We could have torrential rains from Philly to New York around the 10 o'clock hour.
05:15Please don't drive through standing water.
05:17It could come down at 1 to 2 inches an hour.
05:18It'll move toward Boston the pre-dawn hours and then into parts of northern New England.
05:23It'll just be showery after that.
05:24It will not be a washout and it dries out on Sunday.
05:26Now to the Canadian wildfire smoke in the Midwest from Green Bay to Chicago tonight.
05:31Poor air quality.
05:32And by the time we get into Saturday, it's the Dakotas into Minnesota and into Iowa.
05:36Be very careful in the northeast tonight.
05:37David?
05:38Lee Goldberg, thanks to you as always.
05:40We turn next tonight, ABC News learning of a very close call for two passenger jets,
05:44a United plane and a SkyWest plane taking off on parallel runways in San Francisco.
05:48One passenger plane suddenly turning into the path of the other.
05:52Authorities say they were just seconds apart from each other.
05:54Here's Trevor Ault.
05:56Tonight, frightening new details emerging from a recent close call at San Francisco International Airport.
06:02A pair of commercial jets, one from United, the other SkyWest,
06:06taking off at the same time on parallel runways earlier this month
06:10when the United plane suddenly turned into the path of the SkyWest plane.
06:14That SkyWest jet veering out of the way to avoid a potential disaster.
06:19Air traffic control demanding an urgent course correction.
06:261152, turn left heading 280 immediately.
06:291152, turn left heading 280 immediately.
06:32Tracking data from Flight Radar 24 shows the planes were less than 2,000 feet apart laterally
06:37and a mere 275 feet apart vertically.
06:40United 1152, how'd you wind up over there?
06:42In a statement, the FAA says that United plane turned without authorization.
06:47The agency is investigating the event.
06:49Very, very close.
06:50And we know that the regional jet maneuvered away from the United jet.
06:55So they saw it, looked out the window and said, oh my gosh, we've got to move.
06:58And they turned behind the United jet.
07:00If they hadn't done that, it would have been even closer.
07:04And David, there were more than 150 people on board these two aircraft.
07:08Of course, this is the latest in a string of close calls that we have seen on U.S. runways this year.
07:12David.
07:13Yeah, we know viewers at home are wondering what is going on here.
07:15Trevor Ault tonight.
07:16Trevor, thank you.
07:17Now to the scene in the Oval Office today, President Trump's farewell to Elon Musk.
07:21What Elon Musk acknowledged today, Musk also explaining his black eye.
07:25Also tonight here, the Supreme Court handing the president a major victory on immigration
07:29and what President Trump said when he was asked if he would consider a pardon for Sean Diddy Combs.
07:34Here's Rachel Scott.
07:36Tonight, President Trump giving an Oval Office farewell for Elon Musk,
07:40the world's richest man now stepping away from his role as a special government employee,
07:45slashing federal agencies and firing thousands of government workers.
07:49Elon gave an incredible service.
07:52Nobody liked him.
07:52And he had to go through the slings and the arrows, which is a shame because he's an incredible patriot.
08:01Musk says he will continue to serve as an unofficial advisor to the president.
08:05Musk now acknowledging his job was an uphill battle.
08:08And in the end, not coming close to the $2 trillion in savings he originally promised.
08:13So I think the Doge team is doing an incredible job.
08:17They're going to continue doing an incredible job.
08:19His departure comes after he broke with the president over his budget bill and the level of spending in it.
08:25Some estimate it could add $3.8 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years,
08:31with cuts to Medicaid and food assistance programs.
08:33This is what Musk said about the president's one big, beautiful bill.
08:37I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly,
08:42which increases the budget deficit, not just decrease it, and undermines the work that the Doge team is doing.
08:48At a town hall in Iowa, Republican Senator Joni Ernst, the latest lawmaker, to face outrage over the cuts.
08:54She was asked about Medicaid.
08:55Some in the crowd saying people will die.
08:58Her response, making news.
09:00People are not, well, we all are going to die.
09:03On immigration tonight, the Supreme Court giving the president a win.
09:10Today, ruling the administration can end protections for more than 500,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, at least for now.
09:19And yesterday, we had, just a couple of hours ago, we had a great decision from the Supreme Court, thank goodness, that was very important.
09:30In a scathing dissent, joined by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson warned the devastating consequences of allowing the government to precipitously upend the lives and livelihoods of nearly half a million non-citizens.
09:44And tonight, after a string of controversial pardons, President Trump was asked whether he would consider a pardon for Sean Diddy Combs, now on trial for sex trafficking and racketeering.
09:54I haven't spoken to him in years.
09:55He used to really like me a lot, but I think when I ran for politics, he sort of, that relationship busted up from what I read.
10:04I would certainly look at the facts.
10:06If I think somebody was mistreated, whether they like me or don't like me, it wouldn't have any impact on me.
10:14And David, the president here in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania tonight, touting a new partnership between U.S. Steel and the Japanese company Nippon.
10:22And just moments ago, he announced that he is now doubling tariffs on SEAL, raising them from 25 to 50 percent.
10:29And, David, we want to go back to the Oval Office because there was that moment in the room today when Elon Musk was asked about his black eye.
10:36He said that he was horsing around with his five-year-old son and told him to go ahead and punch him in the face.
10:42And so his son did.
10:43David?
10:43Rachel Scott, live there from Pennsylvania.
10:45Rachel, thank you.
10:46And you heard the president was asked there about Sean Combs today.
10:49At the Combs trial in New York City today, the searing new testimony, the defense and their cross-examination of the assistant who claimed Sean Combs repeatedly sexually assaulted her.
10:58Aaron Katursky at the courthouse.
11:00After his one-time assistant testified Sean Combs sexually assaulted her, the defense today confronting the woman known by the pseudonym Mia with dozens of her emphatic Instagram posts calling Combs a legend, her mentor, and an inspiration.
11:14That's the person who has traumatized you, defense attorney Brian Steele asked.
11:18Why would you promote the person who has stolen your happiness?
11:21It was a very confusing cycle of ups and downs, Mia testified.
11:25I was young and manipulated and eager to survive.
11:28Combs denies sexually assaulting anyone, but Mia testified it happened more than once.
11:33Federal prosecutors say Combs subjected Mia to forced labor, including sex, as part of the criminal enterprise they accuse him of running, which he also denies.
11:41Mia called working for Combs chaotic, toxic, and terrifying.
11:45But the jury today saw a text she wrote after losing her job.
11:49I'm going to kill myself.
11:50My life is over.
11:51The defense asked, isn't this great?
11:53You're away from your abuser.
11:55In hindsight, fantastic, but at the time, the worst thing ever, Mia answered.
11:59This was the only world I knew for 24 hours a day for eight years.
12:04Sean Combs was seated in court here, David.
12:06When President Trump spoke today about potentially pardoning him, we asked for reaction.
12:11His representative had no response.
12:13David.
12:14All right, Aaron Katursky at the courthouse all week.
12:16Aaron, thank you.
12:17Tonight, the reality TV star who prosecutors called a career swindler now speaking out after being freed by President Trump.
12:23Todd Chrisley thanking the Trump White House for his newfound freedom.
12:27On Tuesday, President Trump issuing Todd and Julie Chrisley a full pardon after they served two and a half years in federal prison.
12:33Authorities say they stole millions in a banking scheme and failed to pay their taxes.
12:36Even though this pardon has happened, I still was convicted of something that I did not do.
12:44Todd Chrisley says he now plans to advocate for prison reform and says there could be a return to reality TV.
12:50Tonight here, we remember actress Loretta Switt from MASH.
12:53She won multiple Emmys for her role.
12:55And this evening, we look back, including the scene watched by nearly 106 million Americans as the tributes now pour in.
13:01She was the quick-witted Major Margaret Houlihan in one of TV's biggest hits.
13:09Those two, they're ruining this war for all of us.
13:14Loretta Switt commanding the screen on MASH for more than a decade.
13:17From now on, I'm number one, me, Margaret Houlihan.
13:21And believe me, soldier, I deserve better than you.
13:24The tough, by-the-book Major Houlihan was the head nurse of their mobile army surgical hospital during the Korean War,
13:31evolving in her role to a leader fighting for respect in a man's world.
13:35We actually survive without you.
13:38We live, we breathe, we dream, we do our work, we earn our pay.
13:43Sometimes we even have our little failures.
13:45And then we pull ourselves together.
13:47Switt infusing humanity into Major Houlihan 2, showing a vulnerability, that famous scene Major Houlihan breaking down in front of the other nurses.
13:56Did you ever once ever offer me a lousy cup of coffee?
14:01We didn't think you'd accept.
14:03Well, you were wrong.
14:05Switt would star in 240 of MASH's 251 episodes, earning two Emmy Awards along the way.
14:12Sickening.
14:12Along Alan Alda's Captain Hawkeye Pierce, one of only two actors there for both the pilot back in 1972.
14:20So, uh, listen.
14:23Yeah.
14:25And the series finale in 1983.
14:28Their 35-second kiss was seen by nearly 106 million viewers.
14:33Still the most watched single episode of any television series in U.S. history.
14:37Loretta Switt was born on November 4th, 1937, in Passaic, New Jersey, performing on stage for the first time at the age of seven.
14:47She was best known for that role on MASH, but her career was both on screen and in the theater.
14:53Loretta Switt, passing away at the age of 87, tonight here, in her own words.
14:58I would hope to be remembered as an artist who tried to use parts of her profession to further other arenas that were positive.
15:08It's very satisfying for me to have nurses tell me that they became nurses because of watching me.
15:16And it's, that's a very, very great compliment and a very wonderful thing to, to have done while I was having so much fun within my profession.
15:30The impact she had on so many, so many people tuned in every week, 106 million watching that final kiss, remembering Loretta Switt here tonight.
15:39When we come back on this Friday evening, the news for parents when it comes to COVID shots for their children.
15:43And is this different from what RFK Jr. said just this week?
15:46Also, the major reveal tonight from Taylor Swift.
15:49It brought her to tears.
15:50The accusations tonight against NBA star Zion Williamson.
15:54And then take a look at this, a scare right beside a construction site.
15:57This was incredible, a massive sinkhole swallowing multiple vehicles, and they are concerned tonight that this could grow.
16:02We'll have more in a moment here.
16:04Tonight, the CDC appears to be breaking with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s recent announcement over COVID vaccines for children.
16:12The agency today releasing its latest immunization schedule, and it does recommend the shot for healthy children.
16:18The guidance adding a, quote, shared decision-making model that suggests parents should decide if their child should get the shot alongside their doctor.
16:25The CDC policy counters Kennedy's announcement that the shots would be removed from the childhood immunization schedule for healthy children.
16:32A sinkhole opening up right next to a construction site in California, causing real concern tonight.
16:36These are the images showing the sinkhole swallowing cars and threatening nearby buildings in Ventura.
16:41City leaders saying the construction project appears to be at fault, citing a shoring failure as to why the ground caved in.
16:47Crews right now trying to figure out how to prevent any further damage.
16:50When we come back here tonight, NBA superstar Zion Williamson hit with major accusations tonight.
16:56His legal team is now firing back.
16:58And Taylor Swift crying tears of joy after her big reveal tonight.
17:03To the index of other news on a Friday night, a bombshell lawsuit accusing of NBA star Zion Williamson of rape.
17:09A woman only identified as Jane Doe filing the suit in Los Angeles against the Pelicans forward.
17:13The woman now claiming between 2018 and 2023 that Williamson allegedly raped her and subjected her to sexual, physical, emotional and financial abuse.
17:22Williamson's legal team firing back, denying all allegations and calling this an exploitation attempt.
17:28Well, tonight, Taylor Swift taking back control of all of her music now.
17:31The singer revealing in an emotional announcement that she bought back the rights to her first six albums, now owning her entire catalog.
17:38The deal marking the end of a years long battle to get control over her own work.
17:42Swift telling her fans she burst into tears upon realizing her dream was coming true.
17:47What a long fight that was.
17:48When we come back here, how do you spell eclaircissement?
17:52I'm not even sure I said that correctly, but you've got to see the moment in a moment.
17:56Finally tonight here, our person of the week.
17:58He was runner-up last year and he vowed to return to win it all.
18:03The Scripps National Spelling Bee turning 100 years old and tonight, a new champion.
18:0913-year-old Faizan Zaki from Allen, Texas.
18:11He actually made it to the finals last year, finishing second after a rapid-fire tiebreaker.
18:17And he came back this year determined to win.
18:22Faizan with a chance to win it all with this word.
18:26Eclaircissement.
18:27Eclaircissement.
18:28E-C-L-A-I-R-C-I-S-S-E-M-E-N-T.
18:37Eclaircissement.
18:38That is correct.
18:41Eclaircissement, meaning the cleaning up of something obscure.
18:44It's obscure all right, and he got it.
18:46Faizan is only the fifth contestant ever to win the year after finishing in second place, not seen in more than 20 years.
18:54I'm pleased, really pleased to present you with the Scripps Cup.
18:58And on GMA this morning, he did admit this.
19:01I enjoy doing it.
19:03I am glad it's over now, though.
19:05Glad it's over, but already preparing for what could come next.
19:09I really enjoy math, so maybe I can try, like, getting into, like, the International Math Olympiad, but yeah.
19:15Perhaps the Math Olympiad is next, but tonight, savoring his win.
19:21And so we choose Faizan Zaki.
19:23He says the Math Olympiad is next.
19:25The rest of us might just get to the weekend and have a drink.
19:27I'm David Muir.
19:27I'll see you on Monday.
19:29Good night.
19:31Thank you for making World News Tonight with David Muir, America's most watched newscast.
