00:00Brothers, let us finally look at worship in the book of Revelation,
00:29But let's move on and look at chapter 5.
00:33Here is a new worship that appears after the vision of the Lamb.
00:40I am going to read Revelation 5, verses 6 through 14.
00:45Then I saw a Lamb, as though it had been slain, standing in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures and of the elders.
00:54It had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.
01:01And he came and took the book from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.
01:06When he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb.
01:13Each one had a lyre and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
01:20And they sing a new song, saying, You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals,
01:26because you were slaughtered and with your blood purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
01:34And you have made them a kingdom of priests for our God, and they reign on the earth.
01:40And in the vision I heard the voice of a multitude of angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders.
01:50Their number was myriads upon myriads and thousands upon thousands.
01:54And they said with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”
02:06In verse 8, brothers, it says that the four living creatures.
02:36And the twenty-four elders prostrate themselves, but the Greek word used is epezán, which rather means to fall, to fall before the Lamb.
02:50We see this as an outward act of homage, as we have already mentioned.
02:55The song that is spoken here in verse 9 is a new song, but it makes no mention of God's creative action.
03:07Rather, it is about the redemptive action of Christ through his immolation as the Lamb.
03:13And just further on, in verse 14, two words are mentioned.
03:20They prostrate themselves, that is, the gesture, to worship, proquinesan.
03:26Here we can see, as Father André Fillé mentions, that the transition from chapter 4 to chapter 5 of Revelation is the transition of the liturgy that becomes specifically Christian.
03:43It's as if chapter 4 is still Jewish worship, but chapter 5 is typically Christian worship because the Lamb appears.
03:56But rather we could say that we see a complementarity in these two chapters of Revelation.
04:04And speaking of worship, worship is also and always is in Christ.
04:14And therefore, all Christian liturgy is in Christ.
04:19That is the meaning of worship.
04:23The worship in Revelation chapter 4 insists on the transcendence of God.
04:28And that is why the song of this chapter 4, with the triple saint, shows us how fundamental the worship of God is.
04:39God, who is worshipped as creator.
04:42And this is always, always true from the point of view of Christian worship.
04:49Even though all religions live off worship.
04:53From the worship of the creator divinity.
04:56Muslims, Taoists, and even the Aztecs worshipped a creator God.
05:03But brothers, in chapter 5, typically Christian, the Book of Revelation places the emphasis on worship in total harmony with the praise of God's love,
05:18through which the Lamb has accomplished redemption.
05:22Praise is therefore part of Christian worship.
05:26And this is what chapter 5 of Revelation teaches us regarding the praise of the Lamb.
05:33And that is why these songs in chapter 5 are so important.
05:37Now, in this chapter 5 there is also another very important element.
05:42Here, specifically in verse 8, lyres, golden bowls, and bowls filled with perfumes are mentioned.
05:51These are artistic objects that accompany the singing.
05:55Singing is also an art, it is an artistic activity.
06:00And this is what the liturgy teaches us.
06:02Christian liturgy is always accompanied by objects, especially artistic objects.
06:09And we see it in our churches.
06:11This, brothers, we can interpret as Christian liturgical praise that must always be rooted in worship,
06:22which is an individual encounter and personal offering.
06:25And here we see how chapter 5 is a continuation of chapter 4.
06:31Chapter 4 is about personal worship, encounter, and offering to a creator God.
06:39But chapter 5, the chapter of the Lamb, this worship is praise and it is liturgy.
06:48And we see, and spiritually in our life, in our life of spirituality,
06:53which includes the Christian liturgy, I see that I cannot celebrate the Christian liturgy
06:59if there is no constant personal encounter of worship with God, a love of worship.
07:09Brothers, there are other mentions of worship in Revelation that we will briefly look at here.
07:15There are actually many, but I want us to focus on a few here.
07:21Revelation 7, verse 11.
07:23And all the angels who were standing around the throne of the elders and the four living creatures
07:30They prostrated themselves before the throne, knelt on the ground, and worshiped God.
07:36Later, in chapter 11, verse 16, we read.
07:40And the twenty-four elders who were seated on their thrones before God
07:45They prostrated themselves with their faces to the ground and worshipped God, saying, and began a praise.
07:53In chapter 19, verses 1 through 4, we read.
07:57And for the second time they said,
08:20Brothers, then we see five main forms of worship in the book of Revelation.
08:41Chapters 4, 5 and these other three that we will now summarize.
08:47Above all, summarize to discover what the apocalyptic teaching of worship is.
08:56Number 1, Revelation 4, the first worship takes place before the enthronement of the lamb.
09:03Number 2, in chapter 5 of Revelation, the second worship takes place at the moment
09:10in which the lamb takes the book to open its seals just before the opening of the first seal by the lamb himself.
09:21Number 3, in Revelation 7, the third worship takes place before the opening of the seventh seal by the lamb.
09:30Number 4, Revelation 11, the fourth worship that takes place after affirming that the kingdom of the Lord and of his Christ has arrived.
09:41Number 5, Revelation 19, the fifth worship takes place at the beginning of chapter 19
09:50And right after that appears the rider on the white horse who is Christ, the logos of God.
09:57Revelation 19, verse 13.
10:00Now, if we recap the teaching, these quotations of the great worship in Revelation
10:10Above all, as I said, to discover what the lesson is, we look at the following
10:15that the worship in the Apocalypse is typically to the Creator God, but always in Christ.
10:24It is the same honor, the same adoration that is given to the Father and to the Son as the lamb,
10:33sacrifice, salvation, redemption.
10:37In fact, the Apocalypse always mentions the worship of the Father and the Lamb in unity.
10:44We Christians are not to worship two gods, but one God who is worshipped always and forever.
10:53God worshipped together with the Lamb, the Lamb worshipped together with the Father, with God, who is seated on the throne,
11:01always in unity.
11:03The Book of Revelation will never mention the word worship.
11:08No, we give only one worship to God the Creator and to God the Redeemer, Christ Jesus.
11:15one God in the Trinitarian unity.
11:18But now we ask ourselves, what about the worship of the Holy Spirit?
11:24The Holy Spirit, true God, and whom we say in the creed receives the same worship and glory.
11:31Certainly, the teaching about the Holy Spirit in Revelation is very short, and we must respect the biblical texts as they are.
11:42The Book of Revelation, with respect to the Holy Spirit, mentions it as the seven spirits sent throughout the earth.
11:53And this mission is the mission of the Holy Spirit who comes to us, from the day of Pentecost until the return of Christ.
12:02So, it is the Holy Spirit who comes to us, who is sent on a mission, but for what purpose?
12:11To teach us how to worship.
12:13It is the Holy Spirit who leads us to the worship of God.
12:18We worship through the Holy Spirit, in the Holy Spirit, the One and Triune God.
12:24And here we understand two very important spiritualities, and it is even where Johannine and Pauline spirituality come together.
12:35Saint Paul, in his Letter to the Romans, says,
12:38The Holy Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness to make us acclaim God, the Father, a creator God, a God who is my Father, who is the source of my being.
12:51And in Johannine spirituality, let us remember the encounter of Jesus with the Samaritan woman.
12:57God seeks worshippers in spirit and in truth.
13:01What does that mean?
13:02That the Holy Spirit teaches us true worship.
13:07I worship God as Creator, I worship Christ as my Savior, in the Holy Spirit, through the Holy Spirit,
13:15And in worshipping them, I am worshipping the whole Trinity; it is the whole Trinity that is touched by my act of worship.
13:23Or rather, I allow myself to be found by the Trinity in my act of worship.
13:29So, brothers and sisters, this is true Christian worship.
13:33And we understand then, firstly, on the one hand, how the Bible places us in this very long context of the word posture,
13:44which can be before the King, before statues, before idols, but also before God.
13:51And the Jews are very intelligent about that.
13:54They know that only God is the creator, and only God is the author of my worship.
14:01If I bow down to other realities, it may be a tribute.
14:08And on the other side, which is what I learn from the worship of the Apocalypse, is Trinitarian worship.
14:15I adore the Triune God.
14:17I worship God moved by the Holy Spirit, because Jesus teaches me to worship a God who is love.
14:25and that He created me out of love and for love.
14:28So, brothers and sisters, thanks to the Book of Revelation, let us learn to worship and resume this practice.
14:35to enter into the presence of God, to observe a moment of external and internal silence,
14:43discovering that God is the source of my entire being and that He saves me,
14:48who saves me through the death and resurrection of the Lamb.
14:52And send this Holy Spirit to raise me to the heights of worship.
15:02Alright, brothers, I hope you enjoyed this session.
15:05that they have learned a little more about what the Apocalypse is,
15:09And we'll see each other in a future session of this exciting book,
15:14here.
15:14May God bless them.
15:15Thank you.
15:16Thank you.
15:17Thank you.
15:18Thank you.
15:19Thank you.
15:20Thank you.
