01:51From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight.
02:01Good evening, everyone.
02:03Thanks so much for joining us on this busy Sunday.
02:05I'm Lindsay Davis.
02:06Breaking news as we come on the air tonight.
02:08What President Trump said about Putin just moments ago threatening sanctions
02:12after a barrage of attacks against Ukraine over the weekend.
02:15But we do begin with chaos in the skies as a passenger allegedly attempted to open an emergency exit
02:21mid-flight.
02:23Authorities say the international flight was traveling from Tokyo to Houston and diverted
02:27to Seattle.
02:28Passengers and crew members used zip ties to restrain the man.
02:31He was taken into custody in Seattle and evaluated at a hospital.
02:35In Florida, a propane tank explosion is to blame for a traffic nightmare, shutting down a
02:40major interstate for several hours.
02:42All this during the height of the holiday travel rush.
02:45And weather is also causing some headaches for travelers.
02:47Strong winds and hail battering parts of the plains and into the south.
02:51Our weather team is standing by with the forecast.
02:53But ABC's Morgan Norwood leads us off tonight with the holiday travel hiccups.
02:58Tonight, chaos in the sky.
03:00Passengers wrestling an unruly man who authorities say tried to open the plane doors mid-flight.
03:06The flight from Tokyo to Houston diverted to Seattle.
03:10Passengers and crew using a zip tie to restrain the passenger.
03:13Ashley Bradley recording the whole ordeal.
03:16Thankful others stepped in to help.
03:18The airline, All Nippon Airways, confirming the incident.
03:21And saying a second passenger became unruly while on the tarmac in Seattle.
03:26And that both were removed from the flight by Port of Seattle police.
03:29The harrowing incident comes during the height of the Memorial Day weekend travel rush.
03:34The TSA is screening more than 3 million passengers on Friday.
03:37Making it the third busiest travel day ever.
03:40It's definitely a very busy airport.
03:42This is crazy.
03:44In Newark, passengers met with more than 300 delays to start the weekend.
03:49The airport seeing a slight improvement after weeks of disruptions from runway construction,
03:53aging technology and the ongoing air traffic controller shortage.
03:58And for those hoping to avoid the lines at the airport,
04:00an expected 39.4 million are hitting the roads where long waits stack up on major highways.
04:06It's really, really bad.
04:07It's awful.
04:08It's bananas on the roads.
04:10This tanker fire on Interstate 595 in Florida, bringing traffic to a standstill early today.
04:16And out west, thousands of visitors expected this holiday weekend at Lake Havasu.
04:20The San Bernardino Sheriff's Office ramping up staffing as rescuers race to this boat fire,
04:25battling the flames as those high winds threatened to spread the fire to other vessels.
04:30No one injured in that blaze.
04:32And on the roads, expect peak traffic tomorrow.
04:35Experts say the best time to leave is before 2 p.m.
04:38But as for that plane incident, Lindsay, authorities say the man was taken to the hospital
04:41after they found he had some sort of medical episode.
04:44That plane did go on to Houston as planned.
04:47Lindsay?
04:47Good reminder.
04:48Get on the road before 2 if we can.
04:50Morgan, thank you.
04:51Now to the tornado and severe thunderstorm watch for the plains and parts of the south.
04:55Let's bring in WABC meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station, WABC.
04:59Danny, give us a sense of the greatest risk tonight.
05:03Greatest concerns are going to be tornadoes, strong storms, damaging wind gusts for the southeast
05:07and parts of the southern plains.
05:09A tornado watch now in effect in parts of Texas and Oklahoma, with the severe thunderstorm
05:13watches expanding from eastern Oklahoma to northern Georgia.
05:16Wind gusts over 70 miles per hour and large hail both can cause damage.
05:19Plus, we have the flash flooding that remains an ongoing issue with an additional 2 to 4
05:23inches of rain between now and Monday night.
05:25This area already saturated, which makes roads extra dangerous for those heading home from
05:29the holiday.
05:29Severe threat focused on Texas tomorrow, Lindsay, and it looks like a stormy Memorial Day for
05:33a lot of the southeast.
05:34Could be a messy Monday for many.
05:37And I know you'll be back later with the forecast for the rest of the country.
05:40Danny, thank you.
05:41Now to the arrest of a U.S. citizen for allegedly attempting to bomb an American embassy.
05:46Let's bring in ABC's Alex Preshay in Washington.
05:48Good evening.
05:49Alex, tell us what you're learning.
05:51Lindsay, the FBI arrested Joseph Neumeier, a dual U.S. and German citizen, at JFK Airport
05:56in New York today.
05:58The 28-year-old is accused of attempting to firebomb the U.S. embassy field office in Tel
06:03Aviv.
06:04And authorities say that Neumeier, seen here on Facebook, walked up to the office earlier
06:08this month and allegedly spat on an embassy guard before ditching his backpack and running
06:12away.
06:12Inside, authorities say they found three Molotov cocktails, later disarmed by Israeli national
06:17police.
06:18Neumeier was arrested and deported to face charges in the U.S.
06:21A newly unsealed criminal complaint says a subsequent investigation found a Facebook
06:24page with hate-filled posts, including this one from the day of the alleged attack that
06:29says, join me as I burn down the embassy in Tel Aviv.
06:32Death to America, death to Americans.
06:34And, Lindsay, tonight, Neumeier faces a number of charges that could land him in prison for
06:39up to 20 years.
06:40Lindsay?
06:41Alex, thank you.
06:42Next, tonight, cities across the country are marking the fifth anniversary of George Floyd's
06:46death.
06:47His final words, I can't breathe, became a rallying cry for the nation.
06:50But now some say they're facing backlash from the Trump administration, what Floyd's family
06:55is saying tonight.
06:56Here's ABC's Irene Shaw.
06:59Tonight, five years since the death of George Floyd, a moment igniting a unifying movement
07:04for racial injustice and police reform in America in the middle of a global pandemic.
07:10In Minneapolis, where it began, the community gathering at George Floyd Square, the site
07:16of his tragic death for a candlelight vigil.
07:19Attorney Ben Crump, who represented the Floyd family, attended a street festival celebrating
07:23change and resilience.
07:25What we want our children to know is that we stood up for George Floyd to get justice,
07:33Breonna Taylor to get justice, Ahmaud Arbery to get justice in Georgia.
07:37We stood up.
07:39In Houston this week, his daughter Gianna sharing her life's purpose.
07:44Helping the world, like, come together as black and white.
07:48And it just helps us come all together and be nice to each other.
07:53They reflected on Floyd's murder by fired officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck for
07:58over nine minutes, as Floyd repeatedly said, I can't breathe.
08:03It sparked a person who wanted to get up and be an activist and be more of an advocate.
08:07But recent developments raising concerns for that movement.
08:10D.C.'s Mayor Muriel Bowser ordering Black Lives Matter Plaza to be paved over in March.
08:16Activists seeing the removal as erasure of a racial justice symbol.
08:20And deaths at the hand of police officers, many of which are deemed justifiable, have
08:25been climbing since 2020, according to the project Mapping Police Violence.
08:30President Trump saying officers are unfairly targeted and reforms may make it challenging
08:35to keep communities safe.
08:37The DOJ moved to abandon police reform agreements in Minneapolis and Louisville and investigations
08:43of other local police departments.
08:45Minneapolis' mayor pushing back.
08:48Minneapolis is serious about our commitment to police reform, even if the president of
08:54the United States is not.
08:56Minneapolis' police chief says recruiting police officers five years later is still
09:00a struggle.
09:01And George Floyd's death is still an open wound.
09:04But he says meaningful change is possible without the help of the federal government.
09:08Lindsay.
09:09Zorin, thank you.
09:10Overseas now to Russia launching a large-scale assault in Ukraine.
09:14A barrage of drones and missiles targeting dozens of cities.
09:17And what President Trump is saying about those attacks tonight, threatening Russia with sanctions.
09:21Here's ABC's Marcus Moore.
09:25Tonight, President Trump saying he's not happy with Russian President Vladimir Putin after
09:30a second consecutive night of Russian airstrikes targeting more than 30 cities across Ukraine.
09:35This latest offensive, the largest since Russia invaded Ukraine more than three years ago, involved
09:42nearly 400 ballistic missiles and drones, Ukrainian officials say killing at least 18 people and
09:48wounding dozens more.
09:51This woman, thankful her daughter declined an invitation to escape her apartment in Kiev and
09:56stay with them, saying, and thank God she didn't come, because the rocket hit on the side
10:01where the children's rooms were.
10:04These attacks come amid the conclusion of a historic prisoner swap between the two countries.
10:09Both sides agreeing to exchange 1,000 captives each.
10:12But despite that cooperation, airstrikes have only seemed to intensify.
10:16Zelensky calling for new sanctions and additional pressure on Russia to agree to a ceasefire.
10:22Writing on social media, silence of America, silence of others around the world only encouraged
10:27Putin. Without truly strong pressure on the Russian leadership, this brutality cannot be stopped.
10:33On Sunday night, in response to questions from reporters, Trump said he was, quote,
10:37very surprised by Putin's actions and suggested that the United States was weighing a response.
10:42I'm not happy with what Putin's doing.
10:44He's killing a lot of people, and I don't know what the hell happened to Putin.
10:47I've known him a long time, always gotten along with him, but he's sending rockets into cities
10:53and killing people, and I don't like it at all, okay? We're in the middle of talking,
10:59and he's shooting rockets into Kiev and other cities. I don't like it at all.
11:04Lindsey, President Trump has often touted his strong relationship with his Russian counterpart,
11:09but tonight, these are some of his most forceful comments on President Putin in recent memory.
11:14Lindsey.
11:14Marcus Moore, our thanks to you. Back here in the U.S., the GOP is bracing for a tough budget battle ahead.
11:20The House passed President Trump's so-called big, beautiful bill last week.
11:23Now it heads to the Senate. Let's bring in ABC's senior White House correspondent, Selina Wang.
11:27Hi, Selina. Tell us, what's the latest?
11:29Well, Lindsey, President Trump's mega bill barely passed the House,
11:32and it faces a tough road ahead in the Senate, with one Senate Republican today saying
11:36there's enough opposition to stop the process.
11:40Now, the House bill extends Trump's tax cuts, ends taxes on tips,
11:44and slashes spending for food stamps and Medicaid,
11:46which could leave millions of Americans without health insurance.
11:50Now, some Senate Republicans want to see even steeper spending cuts,
11:53while others are concerned about those changes to Medicaid, Lindsey.
11:57And, Selina, you mentioned these cuts could leave millions without health insurance.
12:00How is the administration squaring that with the president's plans to spend millions
12:04on an upcoming parade on his birthday?
12:06Well, Lindsey, the White House says that this is a special chance to honor our nation's heroes
12:11who keep our country safe. But Democrats are slamming the administration for spending on this
12:16parade while slashing spending for critical programs. The Army says that it plans to spend
12:21up to $45 million, but the final tally is expected to be much higher. Right now,
12:27it's expected to include thousands of soldiers, tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters,
12:31and even horses. All of this, Lindsey, to commemorate the Army's 250th anniversary on June 14th,
12:37which also happens to be President Trump's birthday. Lindsey?
12:40Selina Wang from the White House for us. Thank you.
12:43Now to the chilly details of an alleged kidnapping here in New York. Police say the alleged abduction
12:48and torture of an Italian tourist was part of a twisted scheme to get his Bitcoin password.
12:54And tonight, police are now searching for an alleged accomplice. Here's ABC's Rena Roy.
12:57Tonight, an urgent manhunt underway for another suspect in what police say was a horrific case
13:04of torture at a lavish Manhattan townhome. Police looking for the alleged accomplice of
13:08crypto businessman John Waltz, who's accused of holding a man hostage for weeks, beating him,
13:14shocking him with electrical wires, and dangling him off a ledge. And officials say it was all part
13:19of a twisted scheme to get his Bitcoin password. Police say the alleged victim told them he arrived
13:25in New York from Italy on May 6th and went to the suspect's home, where he says Waltz took his
13:30passport and threatened his life until he was able to escape Friday morning, running out of the Soho
13:36apartment to a traffic officer for help. Police arresting Waltz, who was barefoot in a bathrobe
13:41as they handcuffed him. I saw like a sort of SWAT team going with the shields. And then shortly after
13:49that, I saw a guy in a white robe and handcuffs come out. Investigators say they recovered bags
13:55of evidence, including a saw, chicken wire, body armor, ammunition, and Polaroid photos of the 28-year-old
14:01alleged victim with a gun pointed to his head. Law enforcement sources telling ABC News they're
14:07looking into whether the Italian man was hired for sex work, if the suspect turned him into a sex slave,
14:13and if the two may have known each other from the crypto world. Waltz facing a judge in Manhattan
14:18criminal court on charges of kidnapping, assault, and unlawful imprisonment. He's now being held
14:23without bail and will be back in court on Wednesday. We reached out to Waltz's lawyer, who said no comment.
14:31Now, Waltz was ordered to surrender his passport, with prosecutors saying they're worried he could
14:36try to make a run for it on his helicopter or private jet. Lindsay?
14:40Reena, thank you. Now to the dramatic rescue of nine adults from a sinking sailboat. Emergency
14:45crews pulled them from the choppy waters of the San Francisco Bay. And the warning tonight for those
14:50out in the water for the long holiday weekend. More now from ABC's Melissa Adan.
14:55Tonight, a warning for those out in the water after San Francisco first responders rescued nine people
15:01from a capsized sailboat Saturday. They call up here, it's a nine aboard in distress.
15:06The Coast Guard and firefighters racing to rescue a group from a 30-foot sailing vessel
15:11owned by Sea Scout, a youth sailing club. The company says they had a seasoned crew of adults
15:16participating in a master's race when the rudder failed and the vessel capsized.
15:21The spanker caught the wind wrong and tipped over the weather. The boat filled up with water.
15:28Everybody was wearing their life jackets.
15:31This rescue comes as the National Weather Service warns of rip currents through Memorial Day.
15:37Lifeguards say those rip currents can cause drownings and capsize small boats.
15:41Rip currents are dangerous if you don't know how to get out of them.
15:45An urgent warning on the East Coast, too. Officials telling beachgoers to be alert
15:49following recent early season shark sightings off the coast of Long Island and Massachusetts.
15:55Cameras attached to the backs of sharks off of Cape Cod,
15:58deployed by scientists from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy to track and monitor interactions
16:03with fishermen.
16:04We're using those tags to learn more about their predatory behavior,
16:08how they hunt for seals in the waters off of our beaches,
16:11and how they're just using the coastal waters off of Massachusetts in general.
16:16Lindsay, no one on board that capsized sailboat was injured. The San Francisco Fire Department says
16:20they believe that it was high winds that caused the sailboat to top over. Lindsay?
16:25Melissa, thank you. There's so much more ahead on World News Tonight this Sunday. Our weather team
16:29is standing by with your Memorial Day forecast. Plus, what caused this box truck to explode in a
16:35Chicago suburb? Next tonight, a big blast in a Chicago suburb. Home security video shows a rental
16:46truck explosion yesterday in Addison, Illinois. Police are calling it an accident, blaming a leaky propane
16:51tank. The driver suffered minor injuries. Penske, the owner of the truck, is cooperating with
16:56investigators, saying customers are not allowed to transport hazardous items. When we come back, cute,
17:02fluffy, and killing it at the box office, Lilo and Stitch's record weekend.
17:09To the index now, a big holiday movie weekend led by a little blue alien. The live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch
17:16is on track for the best-ever Memorial Day weekend opening. The film from ABC's parent company,
17:22Disney, earned a whopping $145 million. In second place, the other big blockbuster,
17:28Mission Impossible, The Final Reckoning, raking in $63 million. And back to weather now. Despite
17:34some severe spots, looks like much of the country will have a pleasant Memorial Day holiday. ABC's
17:39Danny Beckstrom is back with the details hiking. Hey, Lindsay, yeah, the central U.S. has the best
17:46risk or highest risk for travel trouble with those strong to severe storms. Flooding could also
17:50create messy roadways with heavy rain and scattered storms stretching throughout the south. But the
17:55Midwest sees more clouds slide in, staying mostly dry through daylight hours. The southwest turning up
18:01the heat but staying dry with no major weather worries on the west coast. Well, here in the northeast,
18:05finally, Lindsay, we're looking at sunny skies and seasonable highs tomorrow, coming off a cool,
18:09cloudy, and showery weekend. So I think we deserve the 75 and sunshine. Lindsay?
18:14It is about time, Danny. Thank you. When we come back, an emotional moment that was a long time coming.
18:23Finally, a memorable Memorial Day for one little girl.
18:28It was a big day for these students at Herff Elementary School in Bernie, Texas last week.
18:34I'm braver and stronger. I'm on my way.
18:39On their way to first grade after graduating from kindergarten.
18:44A bit bittersweet for six-year-old Lorelei Howard, who's been missing her dad all year.
18:49Her father, Staff Sergeant Darius Howard, has been deployed since June on a combat mission in the
18:54Middle East. And she thought he was still overseas, missing her big day. But little did she know.
19:01She has no idea I'm here. She has no idea I'm here. And it's been super hard for me to be able to not run
19:06across town and say, Daddy's here, and be able to scoop her up and hold her.
19:11Lorelei Howard.
19:12When her name was called to go up, they played this video message from her dad.
19:16I am super excited. I am so glad that you are able to accomplish everything that you do.
19:21And then this six-year-old received the surprise of her life, Lorelei jumping into her dad's arms
19:30and embrace nearly a year in the making.
19:34It's been a long time.
19:36Good night.
19:37Thank you for making World News Tonight with David Muir, America's most watched newscast.
