Maxi Taxi operators are supporting the prime minister's decision.. to curtail use of the Priority Bus Route... by revoking 625 Bus Route passes. And they have an idea.. of how to make authorised use of the roadway...better.
00:00Speaking to TV6 via telephone, President of the Route 2 Maxi Taxi Association, Brenton Knight, said he welcomes the Prime Minister's decision to revoke the bus route passes, adding she is well within her rights to do so if the passes were distributed without proper documentation.
00:16Knight said for too long his association has expressed concerns over unauthorized vehicles on the PBR, adding if data shows improper pass usage contributes to traffic congestion on the restricted access roadway, then decisive action is necessary.
00:32My thought on it, for the time I have run, the bus route has always been a political football. It's a particular run as it's in Twitter, and again, it falls on that issue.
00:43The management, in terms of the bus route, it falls on that issue, and we have to ensure that it doesn't have to be recorded because it's a special road, and it is the purpose of it for mass transportation.
00:57He raised several concerns about the PBR, but the main one was road safety. He questioned the training of some private drivers compared to professional maxi taxi operators.
01:15We adhere to certain terms and conditions to be on the bus route, mainly one that we are able to do a defensive driving course.
01:25Obviously, we would like to see other people who have use of the bus route make sure that they get to do a defensive course.
01:33Because the bus route is a very unique place, although the streets are not like the highway of 100 and so forth, but the amount of activities take place on the bus route simultaneously,
01:44in terms of people pulling out, people crossing, people coming to stop a maxi, protecting service, putting on a siren and even other emergencies,
02:00the ambulance, the law enforcement. There's a lot of activities take place simultaneously on the bus route.
02:08And there's a particular place to be in the sense that you must have an understanding of what takes place on the bus route.
02:17On Thursday, in a post-Cabinet briefing, Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissessa criticized the former administration for what she described as indiscriminate distribution of letter passes for the PBR.
02:29She said, in some instances, the passes were handed out without required paperwork.
02:34And in many cases, one household received several passes, husband, wife and even children.
