Energy Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal says a team will be set up very soon to assess the state of the former Petrotrin refinery.

Once completed, he says he will conduct an official tour of the assets.

Speaking to reporters following a tour of the UWI South Debe Campus on Tuesday, Minister Moonilal also says his Ministry has been making in-roads in Guyana and and Suriname.

He’s hopeful T&T can benefit from intensified energy discussions with both countries within a matter of months. Reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh tells us more.

00:00Energy Minister Dr Rudal Munilal says he's been putting in the work to ensure Prime Minister
00:05Kamala Passat Bisesa's vision of once again making TNT a top energy player in the Caribbean
00:11comes to reality. A big part of that is making good on the UNC's election promise
00:16of restarting the Petrotron refinery. He says, however, he's yet to tour the facility.
00:22We are putting together a team to do a quick assessment, technical assessment that is,
00:28of the state of the refinery at this minute. We know what the refinery was in 2018 and certainly
00:352015, but we would like to get a technical report now on the mud boiling process and what is called
00:41tracking reports on the refinery. Then we will be in a position to tour. He says as minister,
00:47he can confirm that they have been putting in the work over in Guyana. And while that country's
00:52vice president has spoken on unlikely gas deals with Trinidad, Minister Munilal says
00:58there's more to Guyana than gas.
01:01Guyana and our interest with Guyana is not just gas. They are not as advanced with production of gas
01:09as they are with oil. So our business with Guyana has to do with providing technical service support
01:16to the oil industry, to the energy industry there. Several of our state companies are involved in
01:21Guyana at this time and involved in bidding for contracts of service, providing services and so
01:28on, technical, administrative in some cases. So we are in Guyana, we are doing work.
01:33He says he has written to Guyana's energy minister expressing a deep interest in collaboration
01:38and expects to get a reply soon. He says he has also been in communication with major private players
01:46on potential partnerships.
01:47The vice president did mention that that gas is not an, the production is not as advanced
01:54and it is all, it also involves private sector players, Enron, Exxon Mobil, sorry, and Fulcrum,
02:02I believe. So Exxon Mobil and Fulcrum are involved as private sector partners. And in the coming
02:08days, we will discuss with the private sector as well, any role for Trinidad and Tobago.
02:13Dr. Munilal says, as for government's discussions with Suriname, that too, he believes is looking
02:20positive.
02:20Dr. Munilal says, as for government's discussions with Suriname, that too, he believes is looking positive.
02:20Dr. Munilal says, there's a major gas symposium in Suriname in June to which Trinidad and Tobago
02:26will have strong representation. And we intend to raise matters of the fuller participation
02:32of the energy sector from Trinidad in Suriname.

02:43You know what Iん people here in on here?
02:46What I should do, it's in the pandemic.
02:49It was a big event that I gave from you.
02:52And I said, should I never check 51% of the business or Gömo that we need to borderline
02:56and see it more.
02:57As I said, dear man, you're not involved in that.
03:01You must consider that, Pastor.
03:03Even though since Trinidad's this best, it is the best for us to hold
