00:02:15But to get there, they still have to survive tonight's two challenging rounds of competition.

00:02:23this is the most closely matched semifinals ever.
00:02:27Everything will come down to these dances and one couple will be eliminated tomorrow.

00:02:33Right now, let's start things off with a tango from the man who earned his first perfect score of the season last week.

00:29:59we're going to hear about the experiences that shaped their lives
00:30:02and gave them their competitive drive.
00:30:04Up first, William and Cheryl.
00:30:08I grew up in a place called Cojima in Cuba.
00:30:11We grew up pretty poor.
00:30:13We used to live with nine people in the same house with two rooms.
00:30:18Sometimes we didn't have not even light.
00:30:21We didn't have that much food.
00:30:23William, when he was hungry, he'll go next to our neighbour
00:30:26and he'll climb the trees and take the fruits and stuff to eat
00:30:30because he was never really full.
00:30:32We're just dreaming about waking up in the morning
00:30:35and opening the refrigerator and seeing food in there.
00:30:38It's a difficult life.
00:30:40But at the same time, I thank God I grew up that way
00:30:43because it makes me work hard.
00:30:45No, one more time. Don't give up.
00:30:47He always wanted to go forward in life.
00:30:49He was never that lazy type.
00:30:51He was always trying to be better at everything he did.
00:30:54You uplift this room. I've never seen... They go crazy for you.
00:30:57You have something very special.
00:31:01When William was older,
00:31:03he started talking to his friends
00:31:06and he sat by the sea
00:31:08and he started looking at the other side,
00:31:11which was the United States.
00:31:14When I was 14, we were thinking to leave the country on a boat.
00:31:17It's 90 miles only, but it's very dangerous.
00:31:21You will see a lot of dead bodies on the sea.
00:31:24You get on a boat? Oh, no.
00:31:26My stepfather, he was a political prisoner.
00:31:29And the United States gave him political asylum to come over here.
00:31:32That's how we had the chance to leave the country on a plane
00:31:35and not on a boat.
00:31:39Once I got to this country, I thought it was going to be easier,
00:31:42but it was really, really hard because we didn't have any money.
00:31:45I didn't know any English, but I knew I had the opportunity on my hands.
00:31:48If I worked hard enough,
00:31:50I was going to give my family everything they needed.
00:31:53I remember the day William walked in
00:31:56and I thought, bloody hell, that is one great-looking guy.
00:32:00We were going to do a photo shoot with him.
00:32:02We asked him to bring some clothing,
00:32:04and that's when we realized he didn't have anything.
00:32:06He owned only, I believe, a tank top at the time,
00:32:08jeans and some construction boots,
00:32:10and we actually shopped for him.
00:32:12The very next day, he booked Ocean Drive magazine.
00:32:15Modeling, I knew, was like a door for acting,
00:32:18and telling all that was definitely my big break.
00:32:22William is the biggest star you can be in Latin America.
00:32:25When he walks in a room, William gives you a present,
00:32:28and when he gets on stage and dances with the stars, you see that.

00:32:39From the beginning, he was just really focused.

00:38:07the woman who earned 29 for her round one quick step.
00:38:10Before she takes the floor with her salsa,
00:38:12let's find out some more about Catherine.
00:38:16I grew up in a place called Neath, which is in South Wales.
00:38:19It's quite a small town.
00:38:21It's very pretty, you know, it's kind of in the valleys of Wales.
00:38:25Growing up in Neath, we always loved music,
00:38:28Catherine in particular.
00:38:30I don't remember a time when I didn't want to sing.
00:38:33I did my first performance in public when I was four years old.
00:38:36Any talent show, any family party,
00:38:39I would get up and sing because that was the thing that made me happy.
00:38:44When I was 17, I got accepted to go to the Royal Academy of Music to study.
00:38:49The Royal Academy of Music is one of the premier music colleges in Britain.
00:38:53It's quite difficult to get into.
00:38:56After she left there, she got called in to Universal Music,
00:39:00got a record deal, and it all happened really fast for her from then.
00:39:05SINGING
00:39:10She suddenly just arrived out of nowhere with this angelic voice,
00:39:14looking like Marilyn Monroe, and the whole of Britain went, wow!
00:39:17And then the whole of the world went, wow!
00:39:21All her dreams had come true, so life completely changed for Catherine.
00:39:29Catherine began dating a television personality called Geoffrey Jones.
00:39:32Catherine absolutely loved Get In.
00:39:35They'd been engaged for a year, and it ended at the end of December.
00:39:43It was a very difficult time.
00:39:46Catherine was so upset about it.
00:39:49If you're going through something traumatic in your personal life,
00:39:53and then you also have to see that it's also out there for everybody else to see,
00:39:58that makes it devastating.
00:40:02And I think it's been very tough for her.
00:40:04But you wouldn't know it looking at her on the show.
00:40:06And that shows the kind of steely determination and guts that she has.
00:40:13So grateful for having an opportunity to come and do something
00:40:17which has just put a smile back on my face.
00:40:21This whole process has really helped get me back on my feet again.
00:40:26The thing about Catherine is she has real determination,
00:40:29and nobody in this competition would have tried harder than Catherine Jenkins.

00:45:44Take a look at how Donald survived the streets long before he wound up in our ballroom.
00:45:51I grew up in Houston, Texas, in a very tough neighborhood.
00:45:55His father named him Quickie because he was so fast.
00:45:58See, you, boy, you're so quickie.
00:46:01When I was born, my dad was in prison.
00:46:03It was hard for my mom.
00:46:05For a single parent to raise five kids is tough.
00:46:09We were homeless and didn't have anywhere to go.
00:46:12It got to the point where we ended up living in a U-Haul under a bridge.
00:46:16Mama kind of left it open in a crack where we were able to get oxygen.
00:46:21It was very tough.
00:46:22I went without eating some days just to make sure my kids were, you know, eating.
00:46:26She realized that she couldn't raise five kids anymore.
00:46:29So she sent me and my brother to live with my grandparents.
00:46:37My grandmother's neighborhood was dangerous.
00:46:38Me and Donald got into selling drugs and stealing cars.
00:46:42That's just the way it was.
00:46:43If you didn't do it, then you was the good boy on the block.
00:46:46In my neighborhood, it wasn't too many good boys.
00:46:52Sports was going to be his way out.
00:46:54You've never had people that compete like Quickie competed,
00:46:58and that allows him to be successful on the dance floor.
00:47:02Like a true sportsman, you came back and you proved us wrong.

00:47:07I was a great athlete, but I was always a troubled kid.
00:47:10I stayed a troubled kid all the way through college.
00:47:13The turning point was when I met my wife.
00:47:16My first date with Donald was at McDonald's.
00:47:19That's the only thing we could afford in college.
00:47:21He was kind of a bad boy selling drugs, and I did put my foot down.
00:47:26Oh, it's going to have to be either the drugs or me,
00:47:29and if you are not going to, you know, stop that life, I can't be with you.
00:47:35If you love a person that much, you're willing to give up everything to be with that person.
00:47:39And I was willing to give it all up.
00:47:42He just really focused hard on his football
00:47:46because he wanted to show there's other ways to make it in this world,
00:47:51and he did just that.
00:47:53Green Bay Packers drafted me in 1999.
00:47:55Being drafted in the seventh round doesn't guarantee your spot on any roster in the NFL,
00:48:01but knowing how Donald Driver is, I knew that he wasn't going to get cut.
00:48:06When they told him he wasn't fast enough, he ran faster.
00:48:09When they told him he wasn't tall enough, he jumped higher.
00:48:12I'm not a quitter.
00:48:13You know, so Donald leaped over the odds that were stacked against him,
00:48:17and now he holds several records as well as winning a Super Bowl championship.
00:48:22Donald's always let his playing do the talking for him,
00:48:25and then he backs it up with that incredible smile and personality.

00:53:28the TV host who took a perfect 30 for her Argentine tango in round one.
00:53:33Here's a look at where Maria got her motivation.
00:53:38I was raised in Medford, Massachusetts.
00:53:41It's a great town, great people, great food.
00:53:44My parents are immigrants from Greece.
00:53:46They came here with nothing, had no money,
00:53:48and then started working as janitors at a nightclub in Boston.
00:53:52Maria was deprived of a childhood because she was always working with her parents
00:53:56because they couldn't afford a babysitter.
00:53:58She did have a roof over her head, and that was about it.
00:54:01As a young child, I think what I remember most is
00:54:09just seeing them struggle and seeing them want to give us a better life
00:54:15and make sure that they could take care of us.
00:54:35My dad always used to say,
00:54:36if you work hard, you can do whatever you put your mind to.
00:54:39And I believed him.
00:54:41Maria was ambitious, you know, from a little girl.
00:54:44She was 14 years old.
